MCPHERSON COUNTY — On Nov. 1, 2023, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will hold a public auction for surplus bison from Maxwell Wildlife Refuge and the Sandsage Bison Range. The auction will begin at 11 a.m. and take place at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge – 6 miles north of Canton in McPherson County. Bidding and non-bidding parties are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Maxwell Wildlife Refuge is managed specifically to preserve the area’s prairie heritage. As such, herds of bison and elk are maintained, both species that are native to Kansas grasslands. However, because the Refuge can support only a certain number of animals, surplus bison are occasionally sold at a public auction.

A combined total of 62 bison will be auctioned this year, including:

Heifer calves older than 6 months will be vaccinated for brucellosis and certificates issued.

Cash and personal checks (if accompanied by a notarized authorization letter from the issuing bank) will be accepted.

Bison auction upcoming at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge

NEWTON, Kan. — Bluestem Communities will host one of its most popular events, the Bluestem Gala, on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Meridian Center in Newton. Doors open at 5:15 p.m.

The Bluestem Gala is an annual event of which the proceeds benefit the benevolent funds and help provide for the needs of residents and participants at each of the three Bluestem Communities organizations – Bluestem PACE with locations in McPherson and Hutchinson, Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton and Schowalter Villa in Hesston. The benevolent funds assist residents and participants who, due to unforeseen circumstances, are unable to cover the full cost of their care.

The Bluestem Gala will feature a catered meal by YaYa’s Euro Bistro, a vacation raffle for two and live music featuring The Barefoot Movement, a Walnut Valley Festival favorite. Registration is $175 per individual or $1,575 for a table of 10. Register at bluestemks.org/events by October 20.

“We want this event to be an opportunity for individuals, couples, friends and family to enjoy an evening of good food, good entertainment and good company while supporting the mission of Bluestem Communities,” said Derek Yoder, Bluestem Communities Vice President of Advancement.

An exciting part of every Bluestem Gala is a raffle for a chance to win a vacation for two to one of two destinations. The 2023 destination options are Jackson Hole, Wyoming, or Seattle Washington. The Jackson Hole trip includes four nights at the Cloudveil, Autograph Collection luxury hotel, airfare, rental car and a pass to Yellowstone National Park. The Seattle trip includes five nights at The Westin Seattle, air fare, rental car, ferry ride to Bainbridge Island and admission to the Space Needle.&nbsp; Each trip is valued up to $4,000 depending on the time of travel. They are holding an ice cream social kickoff to lessons October 15 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Faris School at 301 East 10th in Hutchinson. Lessons will run for 14 weeks with some holiday breaks.

The group currently dances once a month at the Burrton Community Center, though occasionally that dance moves to Hutchinson. Dances are on the second Friday of the month.

Square dance lessons to begin Oct. 15

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters put out two fires in the same neighborhood late Tuesday night. 

According to a release from the department, the Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 703 East 8th for a report of a structure fire at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday. When they got there, firefighters found a residential home with no signs of a fire. The crews met with the occupants who stated that their power was out and led them to their electrical box. Crews than found that there was a smoldering fire inside the electrical box. This fire extended to nearby siding. Crews extinguished the fire and called for Evergy. 

While winding down the incident at 703 East 8th, the neighbor from 707 East 8th walked up and advised crews that he had an electrical problem with his home. Crews relocated to 707 East 8th and started an investigation. Crews found a fire in the attic and a fire in the basement. 

Evergy was requested as crews could not shut off electrical power to the home due to a combination of faulty wiring and storm related issues. Crews noted that many of the electrical lines in the home were very hot and causing smoldering fires. Crews extinguished the two initial fires and then monitored and cooled the other issues until Evergy could arrive and disconnect the power from the transformer. 707 East 8th sustained damage throughout the house. No injuries were reported. Initial cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature. 1 occupant was displaced from the home.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners spent over two hours on Tuesday night and heard publicly from the two finalists for the Medical Consultant position.&nbsp;

Dr. Deanna Marshall from PrairieStar and Dr. Scott Pauly from the Hutchinson Clinic were publicly interviewed and the public was able to give comment as well before the commission and submit questions for each of the candidates to respond to.

The commission is putting the decision on a Medical Consultant on its Wednesday, October 25th agenda.&nbsp;

Pauly served as the Medical Consultant for the county prior to the Request for Qualifications.

The position, as currently written in statute, is for public health. This isn't for just all general health items at the Health Department, the medical consultant is specifically for public emergencies.

According to the March Request for Qualifications, applicants shall be a person licensed to practice medicine and surgery as required by that statute.

The consultant’s responsibilities are as follows:

1. Direct the Local Health Officer on program and related medical and professional matters when requested by the Public Health Officer or County Board of Health.

2. Provide qualified, licensed, and professional medical advice to the Local Health Officer as required by K.S.A. 65-201.

3. As needed, be available for phone consultation with public health staff on medical-related matters.

4. Except for emergency events which may require additional hours of service, the Consultant is expected to provide minimal amounts of service each month. Applicants should provide in their response a monthly contract at an hourly rate for services.

5. The Consultant shall communicate with the County’s liability insurer and follow procedures of that insurer, if any, as necessary to comply with any requirements of the County’s liability insurance.

County commission hears from medical consultant finalists

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ineeda Cleaners began their 36th annual Coats for Kids Drive on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Coats for Kids was started by former Ineeda Cleaners owner John Neal. Rachel and Chris Nelson have owned Ineeda Cleaners for the past 18 years.&nbsp;

The main purpose of the drive is to collect warm coats for kids during the winter months. They also accept adult coats, sweaters, blankets, hats, gloves and scarves.&nbsp;

"One of the things that kind of sets us apart is we try to do our drive in October so that by that first of week of November people have their items and we feel like we kind of beat the really cold times in Kansas to try to get coats to kids and blankets to families and that sort of thing," said Rachel Nelson.&nbsp;

The drive benefits all ages, but Nelson said its important for the Hutchinson community to know that each kid has the opportunity to have a warm coat.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Our goal genuinely is we want coats for kids because they are the ones that need it the most for recess, school transportation," Nelson said. "Parents and adults they can jump in a car and go buy a coat or maybe they aren't outside very much but, you know when you think about kids, either walking to school or having to be outside for school or you know, even teachers. Teachers have a hard time sending kids outside that don't have a coat."&nbsp;

After the drive is over, Ineeda Cleaners washes or drycleans each item and then delivers everything to the Salvation Army in Hutchinson for distribution.&nbsp;

"I would say last year we had close to 1500 items that we were able to donate and so we are hoping to do that at least or more this year," Nelson said.&nbsp;

In past years, the coat distribution has taken place during the first week of November.

Final few tickets available for November TECH Gala

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a four year process, Station One of the Hutchinson Fire Department officially commemorated receipt of their new truck Monday evening.

Battalion Chief Nick White said the main difference between the new fire truck and others in the department is that it is a&nbsp; mid-mount truck versus a rear- mount.&nbsp;

"The rear-mounts still give great capabilities," said White."It's great having both but this will really serve the big commercial fires that we've had in the past to better ourselves at that."&nbsp;

White said a mid-mount design is three feet shorter and three feet wider. It has more ladders, a shorter foot print and turning radius.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

"We are able to get down in what we call scrub in front of a commercial building or even in residentials we can do it but we can put the bucket down in a lot smaller foot print of an area and deliver about 1,800 gallons in on a fire where we can't reach them if it's too hot for us," White said.&nbsp;

The truck was serviced on Monday and will begin to respond to calls around town. The fire department opened station one earlier this year at 23rd and Main on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;

308 candidate forum Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec, in a partnership with the Downtown Hutch Rod Run have released the line-up of activities and events taking place during Hutch Fest on Oct. 6 &amp; 7 in Downtown Hutchinson.

The annual Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run &amp; Classic Car Show starts at noon on Friday, Oct. 6 and continues through the evening of Oct. 7. This two-day event features hot rods, classic and antique cars, trucks, and motorcycles, as well as a Show &amp; Shine, Main Street Cruise, vendor demonstrations, food trucks, and more. The Hutch Rec Foundation is once again hosting the 3rd&nbsp;annual Hutch Brewfest: A Craft Beer Festival, presented by First Bank Kansas. This event will take place in front of the Historic Fox Theatre on 1st&nbsp;Avenue. Proceeds from the event benefit the Hutch Rec Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support Hutch Rec by advocating for program improvements and recreational opportunities through charitable giving. Hutch Brewfest will feature a dozen craft breweries from across the state. NEW in 2023 – a special Homebrewer’s Competition, sponsored by The Clayworks. Reno County Tax Sale next week

Fall harvest is in full swing on our central Kansas farm.&nbsp;

Our dryland and irrigated field corn has all been picked and all that’s left in those fields are corn stalks and a lot of dry organic material that was kicked out the back end of a combine.&nbsp;

The only corn remaining in the middle of one of these recently harvested fields is our popcorn crop.&nbsp;

We baby our popcorn like no other crop on our farm. It is strategically planted in areas near windbreaks that will hopefully help protect the plant from the brutal winds we sometimes experience. It’s always planted on irrigated acres to ensure it gets the water it needs during the growing season. It also receives the most verbal affirmations and words of encouragement from me during the growing season compared to any of our other crops. And it’s the crop that generally tests my patience and my nerves the most as harvest time is determined by a very narrow range of moisture present within the grain.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If field corn is cut a little too wet, the elevator will pay a little less for it and you move on. If the popcorn is a little too wet, the popcorn won’t pop, thus defeating the purpose of growing popcorn. Making sure we harvest the popcorn within that tiny window of acceptable moisture levels literally determines whether or not we have popcorn available for our customers for the next year.&nbsp;

As we get closer to popcorn harvest, I tend to worry about a potential rain that could flood the field. During my time on the farm, we have had instances where heavy rains have flooded shut the roads and flooded fields of sorghum and field corn in water so deep we’ve been able to kayak in it.&nbsp;

The potential for a heavy downpour in the fall always enters my mind as we get closer and closer to the popcorn harvest.&nbsp;

The potential threat of a flood had me overlooking a more obvious threat – especially with it being so dry out here: fire. I was completely caught off guard when we recently received a phone call late one night from a neighbor who had noticed flames in a corn field. He wanted to know if it was a planned burn. It, in fact, was not a planned burn!&nbsp;&nbsp;

Phone calls were made to 911 as my husband drove off to get a tractor and disc while I drove off to meet my father-in-law in the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;As I approached the popcorn field, the growing glow ahead of me confirmed we were not going to be able to snuff out this fire with a couple of shovels.&nbsp;

Soon sirens could be heard in the distance coming down our rural roads all enroute to our location. Those emergency trucks and water tankers and even personal vehicles responding to the fire were all driven by volunteers. It’s amazing how quickly they all responded and helped put out the fire – especially considering many of them are coming from their own farms located throughout the countryside in every direction.&nbsp;

This team of volunteers quickly drove through the field and extinguished the flames spreading through the corn stalks. When it was all said and done, the popcorn was spared with the fire line just a few hundred feet away from the start of the popcorn rows.&nbsp;

I’m thankful for the willingness of these men and women who serve their neighbors and assist in times of emergencies whether it be day or night. This wasn’t the first time we’ve needed help from emergency responders, and it probably won’t be the last time either. But this event reaffirmed my appreciation for the helpers in our community who are willing to assist their fellow rural neighbors. After all, if we didn’t have these organized and trained volunteers available and willing to help, who would?&nbsp;&nbsp;

They sacrifice their time and resources at the drop of a hat when an emergency call goes out to help save or protect people and property.&nbsp;&nbsp;Neighbors helping neighbors – it’s part of what makes rural America such a special place.

MCPHERSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred just after 8 p.m. Saturday in McPherson County have identified the driver who fled.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Colorado driven by 25-year-old Brice Nolan Kasting of McPherson was southbound on 17th Avenue&nbsp;at Mohawk Road one mile east of Interstate 135 and struck a pedestrian identified as 59-year-old Pedro Amezcua-Cabrera of McPherson. Kasting then fled from the scene.

Amezcua-Cabrera was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the&nbsp;Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center.

Kasting was booked into the Mcpherson County jail Sunday night and is being held on requested charges of attempted 2nd-degree murder; unintentional but reckless, accident involving death or personal injury, DUI, reckless driving and improper passing, according to online jail records.

Suspect in deadly McPherson Co. hit-and-run accused of DUI

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters battled a blaze in the southeast part of the city on Monday morning.

According to a release, the Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 201 North Waldron at 8:57 a.m. Monday for a residential structure fire. Heavy smoke and fire was showing out of the rear of a single-story home. 

Crews made an interior attack finding high heat and zero visibility, while locating the fire in the kitchen area. Crews searched the home and found several pets, unfortunately only 2 survived. 

Severe damage was sustained to the back of the home with smoke damage throughout. Fire investigators are currently working to determine a cause.
