City Planning Commission canceled for Tuesday

Nineteen new law enforcement officers, including Kyle Spencer from the Hutchinson Police Department, graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on August 18, 2023 in a ceremony held in KLETC's Integrity Auditorium. KLETC Police Instructor Senior Rob McClarty was the class coordinator for the graduating class, and the commencement speaker for the ceremony was Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson.

President Masterson was quick to express his gratitude to the graduates. "I don't find it difficult to say 'thank you' to people I admire. First, congratulations and thank you. You are about to get into an area where the job can be thankless even though every Kansan should be thankful for what you do." Masterson had one ask of the graduating class, and that was to serve with humility. "Humility is such a misunderstood term in today's society. Humility is strength under control. It's authority without abuse. It's power without having to abuse it."

Under the authority of Executive Director Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas Law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training, the state's law enforcement licensing authority.

STRATACA among Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice winners

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The state of Kansas is in relatively good position compared to other states when it comes to gas prices, according to Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas.&nbsp;

"We're at 14th cheapest in the country," Steward said. "Not as cheap as we usually are, but we're at $3.63 a gallon on average. That's down three cents in the past week."

Local prices are mostly on the low side of the average.

"If you look at where we were a month ago, we were almost 40 cents less," Steward said. "We were at about $3.25 a month ago. We have seen an uptick throughout the summer and a little bit of relief in the past week. Overall, the trends have been kind of interesting to look at this summer. We've had a pretty strong summer driving season."

The underlying cost of crude continues to be the driving factor in pump price increases.

"Crude oil prices have really been the major story over the past couple of months," Steward said. "Those have stayed pretty high. Crude oil was down below $80 a barrel as of Friday morning. That's down about $3 from where we were a week ago."

Steward noted that drops in prices seem to take longer to take effect than increases, especially when there are supply concerns, like in the case of hurricanes that temporarily shut down refining capacity.

AAA: Gas prices still lower in Kansas than much of the country

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County rose for the month of July 2023.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county went up two tenths of one percent to 3.4%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2022 was 3.6%.

There were 999 county residents out of work.&nbsp;

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate statewide of 2.7% in July. This is a decrease from 2.8% in June and unchanged from 2.7% in July 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,000 from June. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,500 over the month, while government increased by 500.

Since July 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 23,100. This change is due to an increase of 18,700 private sector jobs and an increase of 4,400 government jobs.

Unemployment up in Reno County in July

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Police and Sheriff's officers in Hutchinson and Reno County are accepting donations Friday morning to help out Special Olympics.

"It's just us wanting to build relationships, period," said Andrew Soule with the Reno County Sheriff's Office. "We always look to those vulnerable populations. Those are the ones we always want to reach out to and build those relationships with. These are always great opportunities for us to get out and be seen and not only talk to athletes and those involved in the Special Olympics movement, but to talk to anyone in the city of Hutchinson, in Reno County and anyone else that may be traveling through."

The fundraiser is at Dunkin Donuts at 1533 East 17th from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

"This one isn't a give back event," Soule said. "This one is strictly donation based. If you have some leftover change after getting your morning coffee or morning breakfast, we would greatly appreciate it."

Dunkin has done this fundraiser for several years, but this is the first time for the Hutchinson location.

Water to be shut off in part of Nickerson Saturday

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Sheriff's Office is seeking information on cattle that went missing earlier this month.

According to a social media post, on Monday, Aug. 7, 2023,&nbsp;Circle H Cattle Company reported 15 400 to 500 pound calves stolen from the area of US 50 and Sterling Road. 

The cattle went missing sometime between July 29th and August 6th.

Reno Co. Sheriff's Office seeking missing cattle

KINGMAN, Kan. — IdeaTek is expanding its popular ultra-fast fiber internet to Kingman residents and businesses. This expansion will give more than 1,500 households access to gigabit speeds at affordable prices.

Construction began in the north half of the city earlier this summer. Residential installs are expected in early fall.

Friesen said that investment in fiber is a scalable solution for Kansas’ future growth. Fiber offers symmetrical upload and download speeds, scalable capacities for decades of future bandwidth demands, plus more reliability than the city’s current service providers. “We build to the standards of the future, not today,” he said.

Through this deployment, Kingman residents will now have access to unlimited symmetrical speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second, exclusive to fiber connectivity. Unlike conventional cable providers, IdeaTek fiber internet maintains consistent performance, even during peak hours, without data caps or throttling. The company also does not require contracts.

IdeaTek will have an informational meeting about the project at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Livingston Family Center, 1830 N. Main, Kingman. Refreshments will be served, and the IdeaTek team will be on hand to answer questions about service plans and the construction process.

Based in Buhler, IdeaTek was founded in 1999 by Friesen and four high school friends. Today, the company employs over 150 Kansans and is continuing to grow. IdeaTek has deployed over 4,000 miles of fiber and built 150 fixed wireless towers, serving customers in nearly 90 Kansas communities.

Childcare provider class Sept. 7

KINGMAN, Kan. — The 2nd Annual Kingman County Strong Color Run for Suicide Prevention is Saturday, Sept. 23 at Riverside Park in Kingman. Check in is at 7 a.m., the race starts at 8 a.m.

The race itself is free, but they are seeking sponsorships to help fund the Kingman County Mental Health HOPE Kit Project. Kits will be distributed to Kingman County schools, medical clinics, law enforcement agencies and the health department.

You can register for the <a href="https://www.kingmanhc.com/getpage.php?name=Color_RunWalk_for_Suicide_Prevention">Color Run online</a>, or pick up forms at the Kingman Healthcare Center.

Last year, they had over 500 participants.

Kingman County Color Run next month

KINGMAN COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 6 p.m. Thursday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Harley Davidson driven by&nbsp; Brian Scott&nbsp;Kersting, 65, Cheney, was westbound on U.S. 54 just west of NE 150 Avenue.&nbsp;

The motorcycle sideswiped a 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by Daniel Alexander Clark, 38, Kingman, that was stopped&nbsp;on the right shoulder and pulled into the lane of traffic.

EMS transported Kersting and a passenger Melinda Kersting, 66, Cheney, to Wesley Medical Center. Clark was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

United Way office closed Friday to move

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler Public Schools and the Buhler Frolic are working together to host a 5K and One Mile Walk at the Buhler Frolic this year on Saturday, October 7th. 

They are inviting all interested to be a part, whether you are a runner, jogger, walker, or walker and talker.

The&nbsp;5K, which will start at 8 a.m., will be a course designed in and around Buhler, starting and ending at Prairie Bank of Kansas, 200 N Main St.&nbsp;At the end of the ceremony, organizers will acknowledge the top three runners and recognize them with a gift.

The One-Mile will stretch down Main Street from Prairie Bank of Kansas to Buhler Grade School and back to PBK and start at 8:45 a.m.&nbsp;

Funds from the event will support the Buhler Schools wellness program. Registration is just $20.

Cosmosphere recognized as Tripadvisor 2023 Travelers’ Choice Award winner

Exports of Kansas wheat may be in short supply right now, but working with international customers is a critical piece of developing and maintaining long-term markets. That’s why decision-makers from agribusiness companies in Nigeria and Kenya traversed Kansas in early August to learn more about hard red winter (HRW) wheat and the U.S. grain supply chain as part of a trade team organized by Kansas Wheat and U.S. Wheat Associates (USW).&nbsp;

“Harvest results may differ from year-to-year, but coordinating local visits directly connects our customers with the dependable farmers who are committed to growing high-quality wheat,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “Around the world, grain buyers, millers and bakers track the progress of our wheat crop each year, and moving past the headlines is important to communicating the quantity and quality of each year’s harvest.”&nbsp;

The team traveled to Kansas from August 5 to 9, visiting grain companies, wheat researchers and a flour mill. At the USDA Federal Grain Inspection Service in Kansas City, the team received an up-and-close look at how U.S. wheat samples are inspected and graded before heading off to markets both foreign and domestic. In Manhattan, the team learned about this year’s crop quality as well as wheat research projects and upcoming varieties at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center and USDA Center for Grain and Animal Health Research. Discussions at the IGP Institute included the program’s technical training and assistance programs in addition to tours of the full-scale pilot flour and feed mills. Finally, the team toured a commercial flour mill in McPherson.&nbsp;

“Our team had a chance to visit all aspects of the supply chain, giving them a sense of how U.S. wheat quality is ensured throughout the way,” said Chad Weigand, USW regional director for Sub-Saharan Africa, based in Cape Town, South Africa, who accompanied the team. “These visits provide reassurance to overseas buyers that they are getting the quality they want, and face-to-face visits go a long way in providing trust and confidence in our buyers and establishing long-term relationships.”

Trade team participants represented two distinctly different types of overseas markets — large and well-established customers and emerging markets that present future market opportunities. Both are important to the long-term mission of U.S. Wheat Associates — the industry’s export market development organization — which invests funding from USDA Foreign Agricultural Service export market development programs to bring trade teams of overseas customers and stakeholders to the United States each year. These visits provide important selling points in a world marketplace where Kansas wheat producers compete against their counterparts in Canada, Argentina, Australia and the Black Sea.&nbsp;

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and the fourth-largest buyer of U.S. wheat in the world. The United States has been the top wheat supplier in Nigeria two of the last five marketing years; the majority of which is HRW. This market is increasingly competitive with millers subject to price constraints. As a result, U.S. wheat farmers can lose out in this market when the dollar is strong or supplies are short, but Kansas Wheat and USW have built strong ties between the Nigerian milling industry and the U.S. grain supply chain. Trade teams like the one in early August are an important part of that process to reinforce the quality, reliability and value of U.S. wheat supplies for when market conditions are ripe.

Kenya, on the other hand, is considered a developing market. Per capita wheat consumption has increased significantly as the flour market consolidates and urbanization increases. Most wheat flour sold, however, is still used for the home baking of chapatti, a type of flatbread.&nbsp;

USW is assisting this growing flour industry, particularly by working with up-and-coming millers who are just learning their trade. By providing technical assistance in areas like grain analysis, test milling, flour analysis and test baking, USW helps grow the region’s milling industry and increase those millers’ knowledge of and experience with U.S. wheat classes and their different functionality and advantages. USW also works with the flour industry to address trade policies — like import requirements — that would increase costs or complications in future imports of U.S. wheat.&nbsp;

While the buying opportunities for both markets will be limited by the short supply of HRW wheat this year, building and maintaining relationships with overseas customers through trade teams and other market development efforts will continue to contribute to the long-term growth of opportunities for Kansas wheat farmers.&nbsp;

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD #313 posted on social media Thursday that the district has hired Landmark Architects to help complete three projects to be funded out of capital outlay. 

One of the projects includes remodeling the <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/107fc984-4f5f-4b0a-ac4b-2d573ece99a4">newly purchased Masonic Lodge located at 1800 E. 23rd Street in Hutchinson for Ad Astra Academies.</a>

 This location will become the home of USD 313’s Alternative Academy, along with the Virtual Academy.   It was purchased for $235,000 and will undergo a remodel before welcoming the staff and students in August of 2024. 

   Additionally, the district is pursuing two daycare centers.  One to be located in Hutchinson and the other in Buhler with the goal of opening in January of 2025. 

 The next step towards completion of the projects is to hire a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR).  Interviews for the CMAR will be held in early September.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Poker Run will begin at Salty Cycles, 129 E Sherman, Hutchinson, KS. Poker run stops include Sterling City Park, Shane Love Insurance Agency in Arlington, Shep Chevrolet in Haven, the Reno County Veterans’ Memorial in South Hutchinson, and Bretz Injury Law in Hutchinson. The entry fee is $25/hand and $10 for each additional hand with donations also being accepted. All vehicles are welcome to participate.

Prizes will be awarded to the winning hand, the second best hand, and the worst hand. The winning hand will recieve 25%, the second best hand will receive 15%, and the worst hand will receive 10%. The remaining 50% will be donated to the Reno County Veterans’ Memorial. Door prizes and a meal will be provided following the run. Raffles will be held at the last stop, Bretz Injury Law, with proceeds benefitting the Veterans’ Memorial.
