HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce November Membership Breakfast is celebrating Farm City Week. The event will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Cottonwood Court on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

This special breakfast event, sponsored by PrairieLand Partners, is where the chamber will announce the Farm Focus Family of the Year and Ag Business of the Year awards.&nbsp;

Farm City Week is an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication of local farmers and agricultural businesses. This event is an opportunity for the community to come together and show appreciation for the vital role agriculture plays in the region.

The Chamber will host The Peterson Bros, renowned agricultural advocates, at the event.&nbsp;Mike Beam, Secretary of Agriculture will also return to Hutchinson.

BUHLER, Kan. — The official hearing on out of resident student policy in Buhler USD 313 will happen Monday Nov. 13 at 5:45 p.m. 

This policy sets district procedures for accepting out of district students. 

In January, districts have to set capacity and talk about the capacity of how many students per grade level, like a student teacher ratio K-8, but you could do building total capacity at the high school, according to previous comments from Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman.

The board also plans an executive session for personnel, and Couchman's contract is on the agenda for action.

Monday's meeting will take place in the Burkholder Administrative Center in Buhler.

Buhler USD 313 board to meet

WICHITA, Kan. — The Wilderness and Outdoor First Aid training series  at the Rendezvous Adventure Outfitters store located at 12111 E. 21st North in Wichita just east of the 21st and K-96 junction, will consist of six Outdoor Sport related First Aid classes beginning in November 2023. 

All of these classes are free. Classes will be 60 to 90 minutes in length and will be focused on interactive hands-on learning.&nbsp;

LYONS, Kan. — Lyons Fire crews and other city employees helped with traffic control following a building collapse Sunday morning.

According to a release from the city, at 10 a.m. Sunday, firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of West Main Street in response to a report of a structural collapse in the downtown business district.&nbsp;

A two-story building had partially collapsed on the north side of the square in Lyons. The building was vacant, as it was Sunday morning and business owners confirmed no one was inside.&nbsp;

Emergency crews remained on site for the rest of the day and strategically placed barricades to provide for public safety.

The City's response to this incident will likely last for several weeks.&nbsp;

Lyons emergency responders thanked Rice, Barton and Pratt County Emergency Management, Rice and Barton County Public Works, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Department of Transportation and Task Force 5 from Winfield, who provided the services of a structural engineer. The City also thanked numerous citizens who provided food and water to the workers on scene on Sunday.

City of Lyons deals with building collapse Sunday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Leadership Center (KLC), a Wichita-based nonprofit, has selected Reno County as the third of four communities in the Heartland region to participate in a pilot program that will generate leadership and civic engagement to support local entrepreneurship.

"We had folks apply to the program," said Jackson Swearer with StartUp Hutch. "We're really excited about the cohort of folks we were able to put together. We've got some folks from Hutchinson, obviously, we've got a pretty diverse mix of people and also some folks from the surrounding towns around Reno County. We're really trying to talk about this combination, or maybe the intersection, let's say, between entrepreneurship ecosystem building, which is really what StartUp Hutch is all about, and also the idea of adaptive leadership and that's what the Kansas Leadership Center does."

The Heartland Together Flagship Experience is November 14-16.

"We're going to have two and a half days where we get folks from our local community together to talk about those two things together and what are the gaps that we see in our entrepreneurship ecosystem now," Swearer said. "We're going to ask people to design some experiments. We're going to put a few dollars behind some of those experiments and ask them to try some new things. What we're going to at the Reno County Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Partnership level, is we're going to use those experiments and what we learn from this program to help us create the next action plan for StartUp Hutch and for our whole entrepreneurship ecosystem. I'm really excited to see what we learn from folks, what people are hearing on the ground and what kinds of different experiments people come up with."

According to the Kansas Leadership Center, every situation calling for leadership has elements that are adaptive (focused on hearts, values) and technical (the stuff experts can solve). A potential goal is to determine technical tools to provide to entrepreneurs so that they can spend their time working on the adaptive side of the problems they face.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Board of Education will hold its public hearing on the&nbsp;Enrollment of Nonresident Students policy Monday night at 7 p.m.

Also on the agenda is the job description for a&nbsp;Director of Daycare for the district who would oversee 9 employees at two locations.

In addition, during their public comment period, the board will hear from Aaron Hendricks on rec sports in the district.

The meeting will take place at the USD 309 District office at 4501 West 4th, just west of Fun Valley.

USD 309 to hold board meeting Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — City Council member Stacy Goss mentioned at last week's meeting that there is another neighborhood in Hutch that will be having some meetings soon as part of the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative.

"We did a van tour," Goss said. "[Human Relations Director Dave Sotelo] was there. We walked each neighborhood. It was really interesting to kind of see the great parts and the warts and all of some of these neighborhoods. The McCandless area neighborhood was selected for the next neighborhood."

The neighborhood will set its own boundaries, but the initial area they will be talking to is the area from south of 11th to 4th and Severance to K-61.

"They will be doing interviews," Goss said. "Hutch Rec will be getting in touch with people who live in that area and they will be determining their own boundaries, just like the Founders neighborhood did. If you live in that area, I encourage you to be on the lookout for more information."

Another neighborhood to look for name in Hutch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's a fairly light agenda for the Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education when they meet on Monday. 

There are a couple of vehicle purchases on the agenda, also an agreement with Prairie View regarding enrolling students in the Hutchinson USD 308 Virtual School, the official application to open a snack shack for students to run at HMS-7 is also up for approval along with a renewal of the license for the ALEKS online learning platform.

The board will also hear from USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson with her regular report.&nbsp; 

The meeting is at 6:00 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, at the USD 308 Admin Center located at 1520 N Plum Street. SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kelly Danyluk with the Reno County Veterans' Memorial told Hutch Post that there is still room for more names on the memorial in South Hutchinson.

"A little over 3000 names we have room for," Danyluk said. "They're trickling in slowly. I have about 70 right now and when I get up to another 315, we'll engrave another panel."

The new names are alphabetized per panel going forward. The original list was alphabetized throughout. There are about 14,000 names out there right now.&nbsp;

"Go online and submit a name at&nbsp;<a href="https://renocountyveterans.com/">https://renocountyveterans.com/</a>," Danyluk said. "You can go to the City of South Hutchinson office. They have a paper form you can fill out. They'll take that and get it to us."

A Veteran needs to have served in the military and be born in Reno County or have lived in Reno County for at least 10 years. They're hoping to engrave a new panel each year.

"We did one last summer," Danyluk said. "It turned out really good. If we have enough names, we'll do one again in the spring or summer of this next year."

They are still looking for donations, particularly to keep putting up fresh flags, as the Kansas wind makes them not last very long.&nbsp;The memorial is at Discovery Loop in South Hutchinson near the intersection of K-96, K-61, and U.S. 50, west of the Love's truck stop.

RICE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 8:30 p.m. Friday in Rice County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Subaru&nbsp;XV Crosstrek driven by Kryslyn S.&nbsp;Henderson, 23, Douglas, was northbound on Kansas 14 one mile south of Lyons.

The SUV rear-ended a 2020 Hyundai Tucson driven by Mary-Katherine J. Aherns, 21, Wichita Falls, Texas, who slowed to turn into a private drive.&nbsp;

EMS transported&nbsp;Aherns to the&nbsp; Rice County District Hospital. Henderson was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Woman injured after Rice County rear-end crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson YMCA is opening the doors to ALL Reno County 6th, 7th and 8th Graders the second Saturday of each month, including Nov. 11.

This is a free, fun, safe, well-supervised time for middle schoolers to play basketball in the gym, use the exercise rooms, and swim!  There will be plenty of food for them, as well. 

Saturday Night at the Y is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Supervision will be in the form of YMCA staff, volunteers and the Hutchinson Police Department.&nbsp;

Buhler and Hutchinson had the most students attend in the past school year with 225 Crusaders and 189 Salthawks, respectively. There were also 11 students from Nickerson and 14 from other schools.

96% of the participants were non-members.

Feeding the hungry isn’t a job for just one church. 

It takes a group of friends who believe that together we make a difference. 

For the sixth consecutive year, there will be a Thanksgiving Food Drive with churches from across Hutchinson called “We’ll Leave Our Lights On.” 

Sanctuary lights will shine in 20 Hutchinson churches on Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Food Bank of Reno County suggests the donation of these items: 

Hamburger Helper, pastas and pasta sauce, peanut butter, jelly and jam, saltine crackers, mac &amp; cheese, dry cereals, instant oatmeal, canned meats, canned fruits, canned soups, instant potatoes and instant rice, and pancake mix &amp; syrup. 

The donated food may be brought to any participating church.

HUTCHINSON Kan. — The City of Hutchinson lit an eternal flame on Friday at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial in the Salt City. The monument and eternal flame is located at First and Walnut.&nbsp;

The eternal flame is to symbolize gratitude for the nation's veterans. The flame is lit inside a small lantern in front of the monument and faces First. The project was completed in collaboration with the Kansas Gas Service and the City of Hutchinson Parks and Facilities Department.&nbsp;

Director of Parks and Facilities Justin Combs said there was some advance work that needed to be taken care of to complete the project. This included a new quarter of an inch gas line that runs up to the flame.

"We did not have gas in the middle of the island or in the middle of First Street," Combs said at the ceremony. "That was the first step, to see if we could even get gas here. The gas line they tapped into is actually behind the church, so they had to run a new service line down the sidewalk into the street, into the meter right here behind me."&nbsp;

Vice Mayor Greg Fast was present for the ceremony and said the monument that the flame is displayed in front of was dedicated in 1919 and honors soldiers and sailors who served in World War I.&nbsp;

"Thank you veterans," Fast said to those in attendance. "That's the reason that we can have streets and roads and live in a free country so again, collaboration is the key here."&nbsp;

Community Relations Manager Lauren Clary of Kansas Gas Service said the eternal flame is a symbol of eternal gratitude for veterans.&nbsp;

"At Kansas Gas Service, we believe in serving the community not only by delivering reliable and affordable natural gas, but also by actively participating in initiatives that honor and support our veterans and service members," Clary said. "It's a small token of our appreciation for their service and sacrifice to preserve our nation's freedom."&nbsp;

A ribbon cutting also took place after the the eternal flame was lit. Members of the American Legion Post 68 and community members also attended the ceremony.

🎤 Forward Ever: Camber President Bobby Eklofe

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Light Up Hutch Christmas Parade in Downtown Hutch on the evening of Dec. 2 will have pedestrian only viewing areas from DCI Park down to Avenue B.&nbsp;

This means you will park to the East or West of Main Street and bring in your own chair to view the parade in the parking stalls. 

For those that like to view the parade from inside their vehicles, there will still be parking from north of the railroad tracks up to the end of the route at 7th.

Closures on Main will begin at 3 p.m. in the pedestrian only areas so all parked cars can be removed.  Street closures will begin at 4 p.m.&nbsp;

Christmas parade to have closed parking stalls south of tracks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jeff Herndon with the Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita wants Veterans to know, if you are having suicidal thoughts, get help. They'll pay for it.

"It's not just Veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system," Herndon said. "This is all Veterans, assuming that you weren't dishonorably discharged. What does that entail? First of all, you are eligible for up to 30 days of inpatient or crisis residential care. You can be in the hospital, if you need to, for up to 30 days. After that, you have up to 90 days of outpatient care related to acute suicide crisis. That will include everything. If you need to meet with social workers or anything like that, it's not just direct clinical care. Any prescriptions you might have associated with that will be covered, as well as emergency transportation required to receive emergent suicide care. Here's the bottom line, you're sitting at home, you're getting deep inside your own head, you feel like you're wanting to take your own life, pick up the phone. Call 911. Have that ambulance take you to the nearest emergency room. The VA is going to pick up the entire bill from that point forward."

Herndon also said there has been some improvement in the veteran suicide rate in recent years, though it is still too high.

"There's that myth out there about the 22 Veterans a day commit suicide," Herndon said. "We've made a lot of progress on bringing that number down. As of 2020, which are the most recent statistics that we have for an entire year, that number was down to 16.8. It's the lowest it's been since 2018, when it was 18.6 per day. We're making progress, but the bottom line is that one suicide a day is one too many. We've got to get that number down to zero and we continue to work hard to do that."

Herndon said six in ten veteran suicides happen to those who are not using VA healthcare.

Suicidal Veterans can get help at any ER, thanks to COMPACT Act

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College President Carter File announced on Thursday his intent to retire in 2024.

File submitted his request to the college board of trustees indicating his intent to retire effective August 31, 2024.

"My time at HutchCC has exceeded any expectations I may have had when we made the decision to come here. The leadership of the board, our faculty and staff, and of course the students has made coming to work every day a real joy," File said Thursday.

File is the college's seventh president. He started at HutchCC in 2005 as the Vice President of Finance and Operations. He was elevated to the presidency in July 2014. His retirement will end his more than 24-year career in higher education.

The college will conduct a national search to replace File. The search will be managed in-house and will be led by a search committee that will be named in the coming weeks.

File to retire from HutchCC

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After over an hour and a half of public input Thursday afternoon, the Reno County Planning Commission plans to make some edits to the solar regulations document before moving it along in the process, but Thursday's meeting was the public's one chance to speak on the issue before the Planning Commission.

"This is the voice, right now," said Planning Commission chair Russ Goertzen. "We take all of our information that we collected through the public hearing. Once we close it, that's the input that we have to make the document."

The Commission closed the public hearing with just the single day of comments, but Goertzen wanted to think some more before having discussion on edits. Goertzen's comments are edited for clarity.

"I want to thank you all for your comments," Goertzen said. "We appreciate your time. This is a journey and we need all of you for this input. There's a lot of information to digest and I know as late as today, Mark has given us some more input. I, myself, would like to take some time to review this. I, by no means, am ready to make a decision right now."

That was the consensus of the board, so they will have further consideration of any edits to the document at the board's regular Nov. 16 meeting at 4:30 p.m. at the Reno County Public Works office at 600 Scott Boulevard in South Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Solar regs to receive further edits after public input Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County EMS is doing their Fill the Ambulance Food Drive to help the Salvation Army complete their Christmas Food Boxes.

They will be taking donations at Dillons Marketplace at 3200 Plaza East on Friday, Nov. 10 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sat. Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Non-perishable items needed for the boxes are:

Canned Corn Canned Green Beans Boxed Mashed Potatoes Boxed Stuffing Mix Brownie Mix

Cash donations for the Salvation Army to use for the perishable items that they add right before delivery will also be accepted.

Reno County EMS food drive for Salvation Army

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For a third time, PrairieStar Health Center has been awarded the National Quality Leader award by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

On Monday November 6, HRSA announced the winners of the 2023 national quality awards.

“Health centers are cornerstones of their communities, providing essential preventive and primary care for more than 30 million patients who face significant barriers,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, said in Monday’s press release.

These awards recognize the nation’s top performing community health centers for providing the highest quality care to improve health outcomes.

PrairieStar was awarded the National Quality Leader award in heart health for the third time in the last four years, an award that is only awarded to the top 1-2% of all Federally Qualified Health Centers in the nation, PrairieStar is the only healthcare facility in Kansas to receive this award three times since the award has been given.

“As a three-time National Quality Leader, we know that patient satisfaction and the relationships we build, continue to produce patient treatment effectiveness and quality care,” PrairieStar Chief Quality Officer, Mona Broomfield, said.

PrairieStar also received the Health Center Quality Leader Gold award and the National Quality Leader award for advancing healthcare IT. 

Awarded to only 10% of health centers in the nation, the Health Center Quality Leader Gold award recognizes health centers who are the best overall performers in delivering clinical quality. There were only two winners of this award in Kansas.

PrairieStar wins national quality awards

Kansas children are learning more about the wheat grown in their communities and loving eating more whole grain-rich foods, thanks to a federal grant that is enabling school districts and daycares across the state to purchase equipment and source locally produced flour.

According to the requirements for USDA’s National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program, which sets guidelines for the nation’s feeding programs for K-12 students, 80 percent of weekly grains offered at lunch and breakfast must be considered whole grain-rich. Whole grain-rich foods are defined as foods containing at least 50 percent whole grains and the remaining grains must be enriched. Under the Child and Adult Care Food Program, the USDA program that provides reimbursements for daycares and other qualifying programs, meals must include one whole grain item daily.

“The impact of Child Nutrition program operators to improve the quality of grain foods served, access to local food sources, agricultural education and appealing whole grain recipe development is to be commended,” said Cindy Falk, nutrition educator for Kansas Wheat. “It is a win, win for students' health and nutrition needs, local wheat farmers and communities.”

In 2022, the Kansas Department of Education received a USDA Farm to School grant to support the planning, development and implementation of farm to school programs. The department’s Child Nutrition and Wellness program — which works to help incorporate local foods in meals and snacks — divided the grant into sub-grants of $100,000 to 12 Child Nutrition Program sponsors, which included school, childcare and summer meal programs. The funding facilitated equipment purchases so these programs could utilize locally milled, whole grain flour as well as new whole grain recipes and culinary training for food service staff on how to bake with whole grain flour.

“We partnered with the Kansas Wheat Commission to improve access to local foods, specifically local flour, in Kansas Child Nutrition Programs through comprehensive farm-to-school programming that includes local procurement and agricultural education efforts,” said Barb Depew, RD, LD, Farm to Plate project director for the Kansas State Department of Education.

At a recent quarterly meeting of the Farm to Plate project, the grant recipients shared an update about the equipment they purchased and how they are incorporating whole grain foods into their programs.

“It was exciting to learn about the diversity of programs across the state and the children they are feeding,” Falk said. “The primary goals include improving the quality of grain foods served, expanding freshly baked menu items and increasing access to local foods.”

Starting with a direct farm connection, students in Greeley County grew white wheat on the school campus for USD 200, which they harvested and cleaned with the help of a local elevator. Christina Marquardt, the district’s nutrition services manager, reported the grain mill the district purchased is being used to grind those wheat kernels into whole wheat flour for breads, rolls, garlic bread and hamburger buns to feed 200 K-12th students — using 25 pounds of whole grain flour per week.

Other grant recipients purchased equipment for their school kitchens. According to Food Service Director Laura Fails, USD 320 in Wamego purchased two oven racks and a second 40-quart mixer bowl. The purchases allow for multiple menu items to be produced at the same time with less labor and more output. Overall, the staff serves between 1,100 and 1,300 students per day.

“We have been baking for years with Farmer Direct Foods stone-ground whole white wheat flour and the staff makes all their breads from scratch,” Fails said. “A student favorite is their rich 100% whole wheat chocolate cake and students do not realize that it is a whole grain product.”

Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 also used the grain to purchase locally produced flour and equipment. Stephanie Smith, child nutrition director, sourced Willie’s Pride whole wheat flour and bread flour from the K-State Department of Grain Science and Industry’s mill. They also used funds to purchase a dough divider and rounder, which is used for pizza crust, hamburger buns and rolls. Every morning they serve breakfast bread to about 1,200 children, followed by 3,800 lunches.

“We have already purchased 4,500 pounds of local flour this year,” Smith shared. “We are looking forward to baking up more delicious homemade menu items utilizing local products.”

The new equipment and flour purchases are a win-win combination across the state. Jordan Back, food service manager at Oswego USD 504, reported their new 60-quart mixer helps them serve three to four homemade bread items per week, including hamburger buns. Back noted they are sourcing Hudson Cream Flour from Stafford County Flour Mills, which he says is of fantastic quality.

“Although our recipe is 60 percent whole wheat flour and 40 percent white flour, the students and adults cannot identify it as whole grain bread,” shared Back. “Kids love it and we’ve already seen about a 10 percent increase in our participation, and I genuinely believe a lot of it has to do with the homemade bread items that we’ve introduced.”

Child Care Links is a network of daycare home providers in 22 counties. Director Beth Carlton reported 10 home providers received bread kits, which included a mixer, baking utensils and pans.
