HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; &nbsp;The Clayworks at Disability Supports is known for their inclusiveness, and that concept has spread into the holidays.&nbsp; For the past several months, clients have been working on special and store orders of nativity sets. Katie Kile, a client at Clayworks, said she believes she’s sold about four nativity sets so far.&nbsp;

“It makes me feel like I’m bringing everybody joy and happiness with the things that I make,” said Kile. &nbsp; Head teacher in the studio Grace Price said the first design she came up with was simple but it was adaptive for some of Clayworks clients disabilities.&nbsp;

"Now almost every single client that we have is able to make nativities, because of its design," said Price.&nbsp; Kile said she’s glad to be a client at Clayworks and said it feels like family. She said she didn’t have much trouble with the nativity sets because her teachers took each step of the nativity construction process one by one.&nbsp; “I’ll say that it is a miracle of what I can do with my hands,” Kile said.&nbsp; Kile said her nativity set includes the aspect of Mary and Jesus looking down on Jesus in the manager and Jesus looking up at them.&nbsp; “It tells the story of the birth of Jesus and how long it took Mary and Joseph to go to Bethlehem,” Kile said.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More than 1.1 million Kansans will be driving to their holiday destinations sometime during AAA's ten day holiday period. Shawn Steward reminds drivers to prepare before heading out on the road.

"With that increased volume, we will certainly see an increased volume of breakdowns, with tires, dead batteries, you name it," Steward said. "We're projecting responding to more than 3,000 emergency roadside service calls during the holiday season."

Some of these calls are preventable with prior planning.

"Pay special attention to your tires, batteries, your engine oil and other main fluids," Steward said. "Have your belts and hoses checked this time of year, it's a good thing, too. I always like to make sure that your windshield wipers are in good shape, as well."

In addition, if you're replacing your washer fluid, put in the low-temperature variety.

"It's always good to have a plan," Steward said. "Nobody plans to have a breakdown on their vehicle, but they happen. Know what you're going to do if you do have a breakdown. Who are you going to call, whether that's AAA or another service, program that number into your phone, so you can call quickly. Also, have an emergency kit with you in your vehicle, things that can keep you safe and warm until help can arrive."

AAA-suggested items to include in a Winter Emergency Kit are:

Abrasive material (sand, salt, cat litter) or traction matssuggested emergency kit items

Extra warm clothing (gloves, hats, scarves), and blankets

Drinking water and non-perishable snacks for both human and pet passengers

Basic toolkit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench)

Mobile phone, charger and power bank&nbsp;

AAA: Prepare for travel with vehicle maintenance; emergency kit

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Chamber released the 19th edition of its Annual Business Leaders Poll on Tuesday, Dec. 19. 

The Chamber commissions Cole Hargrave Snodgrass and Associates (CHS) annually to conduct a scientific poll of 300 Kansas business leaders to gauge their thoughts and concerns regarding the Kansas business and political climates.

"The top concern, still, is to lower taxes on business at 45%," said Pat McFerron with&nbsp; Cole Hargrave Snodgrass and Associates. "We have seen it higher a few times, but it is up five points from last year."

More than one in four Kansas businesses are planning for more people.

"We do have 26% of Kansas businesses saying they plan to increase their workforce next year," McFerron said. "If you look at the long-term trend, dating back to 2005, that's still a pretty decent number, but compared to what we saw coming out of the pandemic, that number has come down quite a bit."

Also, survey participants are generally dissatisfied with the workforce, and this has been a downward trend for some time.

"See what's happened from 2010 to 2023," McFerron said. "In those 14 years, we've gone from 75% satisfaction to 43% satisfied with the workforce. This is not just a post-pandemic trend line that we see. We continue to see it apply among those who are hiring folks, those who need the workforce, who want to grow the workforce."

The Chamber will release its legislative agenda for the 2024 session in January.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp; — Legend of Hutchinson's leadership staff embraced the Christmas spirit by caroling at several locations around town on Friday, Dec. 23.

&nbsp;Tara Willard, Sales Director at Legend of Hutchinson,&nbsp; said staff decided to go caroling to bring some fun to different businesses that serve the senior community.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"We picked people that we partner with," Willard said. "A lot of our residents have doctors here at the clinic. They go to the hospital, to the rehab, so we chose places that serve seniors to just to bring some happiness."&nbsp;

Legend staff went caroling at the Chamber of Commerce, the Hutchinson Clinic on 11th and Main St., the Inpatient Rehab floor at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, the Outpatient Rehab Center at the Hutch Clinic on Waldron St. and Diversicare.&nbsp;

The administrator receives a gross base pay increase equal to the standard county employee budgeted increase.

According to the contract language, the County shall pay to Administrator as compensation for his services for calendar year 2024 gross wages of $201,217.36.

This is broken down into&nbsp;$170,180.86 as the annual base salary and a&nbsp; vehicle allowance of $600.00 per month ($7,200.00 annually) for official use of his private vehicle within Reno County, along with a $23,000 match to his&nbsp;457b Plan provided by the county.

The Reno County Board of Commissioners will meet for their regular session at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse, 206 W. 1st Avenue.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair announced Friday that Connie Schmitt, Director of Sponsorship &amp; Marketing is retiring. 

According to the fair, during her tenure, Connie was instrumental in initiating the Veteran’s/Military Appreciation Breakfast, honoring our service members, and Christian concert night, that is now a staple in the annual concert series. 

She also made it possible, through sponsorships with the fair's partners, to have the LED screens placed throughout the Fairgrounds and on the west side of the Grandstand. 

The fair said her greatest achievement has been establishing the Kansas Lottery Chiefs Red Friday and bringing the Super Bowl Trophy to the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County was lower for the month of November 2023.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county went down 1.1 percent to 2.2%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2022 was 2.8%.

There were 649 county residents out of work.&nbsp;

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Nov2023%20SA%20Rate%20Chart%20File.pdf">seasonally adjusted unemployment rate</a>&nbsp;of 2.9% in November. This is unchanged from 2.9% in October and unchanged from 2.9% in November 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,700 from October. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Nov2023%20SA%20PrivateEmpl%20Chart%20File.pdf">Private sector jobs</a>&nbsp;increased by 2,100 over the month, while government increased by 600.

November unemployment down in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said there are quite a few concerns among the bank CEOs that he surveys regularly across small communities in 10 states, including Kansas.

"The real concern out there is a downturn in farm income," Goss said. "Another issue is agricultural exports. Those are really, this year versus last year, much weaker. That's true in Kansas and true for most of the other states we survey."

In Kansas alone, according to the International Trade Administration, the export of agriculture products from Kansas declined from $1.9 billion for the first ten months of 2022 to $1.1 billion for the same period in 2023 for a 43.6% slump. The bankers across the midwest are fairly pessimistic about the future.

"When you take those who believe their area is in a recession and those who think it will go into a recession in the first half of 2024, more than 50% think we're either in a recession or going to be in a recession. Some of it, of course, is related to drought conditions."

If there is a bright spot, it is on the ground in the Midwest.

"Farmers, of course, continue to expand their purchases of farmland," Goss said. "Farmland prices continue to grow, surprisingly strong, that's, of course, another issue. Things are looking somewhat better in terms of an interest rate outlook."

It remains to be seen if interest rates will actually fall in 2024, and if so, how quickly.

Goss: Farm income, exports are concerns

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of their Dec. 21 meeting, the Reno County Republican Central Committee passed a resolution in opposition to the federal government's 30 by 30 land preservation goal.

The objection of the committee to the goal is its lack of protection of private property rights and they also assert that there is no constitutional authority for the federal government to make this policy goal.

The position of the county party is consistent with that of the Kansas Republican Party.

As the county party posted last month on social media,&nbsp;

"To date our state has not done anything to protect private land owners from this land grab.  Regardless of what the state does, we need to protect the rights of the citizens of Reno County.  

Additionally, tax revenue will have to be cut from the budget.  </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of their Dec. 21 meeting, the Reno County Republican Central Committee passed a resolution in opposition to the federal government's 30 by 30 land preservation goal.The objection of the committee to the goal is its lack of protection of private property rights and they also assert that there is no constitutional authority for the federal government to make this policy goal.The position of the county party is consistent with that of the Kansas Republican Party.As the county party posted last month on social media,&nbsp;"To date our state has not done anything to protect private land owners from this land grab. Regardless of what the state does, we need to protect the rights of the citizens of Reno County. Additionally, tax revenue will have to be cut from the budget. Reno County Republican committee passes 30x30 resolution

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council was due to meet after the Christmas holiday, but they will not have enough members present for a quorum, so they will not meet this month.&nbsp;

No Buhler City Council meeting in December

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Heading into Day 10 of their 12 days of ringing on Thursday, the Salvation Army in Hutchinson could still use a little more support, as they started that day a little under $11,000 from their kettle goal and a little less than halfway to their overall Christmas Campaign goal of $350,000.

"The majority of our funds come during this season," said Major Paul James. "It's kind of the season of giving. A lot of organizations and groups are raising money during this time of year. It's an important time of year that we raise the bulk of our money to operate, just keeping our lights on, keeping the staff paid that do the service."

The Salvation Army is most likely helping at least one of your neighbors.

"It was around 12 percent of the population of Reno County, even, that we serve," James said. "I never really thought about it. I just saw the number. I'm like, we serve thousands of people. Then you realize, oh, that's a lot of our population that we're helping out. We're grateful to be able to do that, but it really just depends on the support that we get from the community."

The amount of need they were able to meet at their distribution day earlier this week was large.

"We provided toys for 154 children," James said. "We had quite a few families that came in the next day that just didn't make it on to the registration. We kind of did a last minute for that. For food, I know it was over 800 families for food baskets, as well."

The Salvation Army office at 700 North Walnut will be open from 9 a.m. to noon the Tuesday through Friday after Christmas if you want to bring in an end of year gift.

Salvation Army kettle drive ends Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to Republican committee member John Brennan, Richele Calvert won the vote from the party committee on Thursday night over Tyson Thrall to fulfill the remainder of the term of retiring County Treasurer Brenda Kowitz. 

Kowitz will officially retire Dec. 29. The County Treasurer's office is on the ballot again in 2024.

Calvert wins Republican vote for County Treasurer

NEWTON, Kan. — According to a Thursday update from the City of Newton, the first First Street water tank is complete and ready for the chlorination process to begin after the holidays. 

The tank exterior was just washed off in the photo and will dry slightly lighter with a finished gray color.

 The tank is concrete with a shotcrete-type finish that will stand up to the elements of the nearby Builder’s Concrete Plant and Sand Creek.

The&nbsp;existing 3.8 million-gallon water tank, which was built in 1939, has reached the end of its useful life and must be replaced. That water tank stores all of Newton’s drinking water before it is pumped to the City’s four elevated water towers. The plan is to build one new 1.9 million-gallon tank before demolishing the old tank and replacing it with a second 1.9 million-gallon tank.

This will allow in the future for one tank to be taken down for maintenance and still leave the community with a steady water supply.

The new loan amount for the project, approved earlier this year, is $8,347,473 through the Kansas Public Water Supply Loan Fund at a gross interest rate of 1.26% per year.

New tank built for water in Newton

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Youth Services Assistant Director Joe Hammeke has been chosen as the new Reno County Youth Services Director starting Saturday, December 23, 2023. Current Youth Services Director Shelly Bredemeier is retiring on December 22, 2023, after 35 years of public service to Reno County.

Hammeke began his career at Reno County Court Services in March 1996, as a juvenile probation officer. In 2010, he became the supervisor of the Juvenile Probation Department, a position he held until July 2018. Hammeke was then hired by Reno County Youth Services to become the supervisor of Intake and Assessment, as well as the Administrative Contact for the 27thJudicial District. In 2021, he was promoted to Assistant Director at Youth Services, his current position.

Hammeke attributes his success to having worked under great management since arriving in Hutchinson. “Every supervisor I have worked for has demonstrated a strong religious faith, which has guided me in strengthening mine as I continue facing the many challenges of working with numerous children and their families,” said Hammeke.

“God has blessed me in every aspect of my life. When you appreciate driving to work and look forward to returning to your family each day, you have so much to be thankful for. I was also blessed with wonderful parents and eight siblings, all of which have contributed tremendously to who I am today. God has enabled me to make a living at something I have truly loved doing for more than 26 years. Hopefully, he will grant me many more years as a member of Reno County Youth Services.”

Randy Partington, Reno County Administrator, said, “We are excited to promote Joe to Director of Youth Services. Joe is well suited for this position and cares deeply about the impact he can have with staff and the youth being served by the department.”

Hammeke said that he has been working with juveniles his entire adult life, dating back to working in an emergency shelter while attending school at Fort Hays State University. Hammeke has been married to his wife Stacy for 24 years, together raising four children in Hutchinson where he has forged many strong relationships with great friends and coworkers.

All students nominated by Senator Marshall are further vetted and reviewed by Academy staff before receiving a final determination on acceptance.

This year’s interviews were conducted in November at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. Memorial fund set up in honor of teacher

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas tells Hutch Post that the trend in gas prices has turned this week.

"We're seeing now the first increases that we've seen at the pump since September," Steward said. "After being down at about $2.71 earlier this week as the Kansas average, we're now at $2.73. It started to inch up both here in the state and nationally."

Area county averages are on either side of the state average as of Thursday.

"Kansas right now has the 7th cheapest gas prices in the country," Steward said. "Still not a big hit to your wallet when you go to fill up for your holiday road trip."

Crude oil prices are still relatively low, as well.

"They're still in the 70s right now, in the $73-74 range," Steward said. "They've jumped up a little bit with concerns in the Red Sea with some shipping traffic and those ships coming under fire. There's been some rerouting of some oil tankers in that region, which has added to some transportation costs."

West Texas Intermediate Crude was at $73.31 per barrel as of this morning.

AAA: Gas prices may have hit bottom

TOPEKA, Kan. — Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland&nbsp; on Thursday announced the newest award recipients for the Strategic Economic Expansion and Development (SEED) grant program. In total, 13 recipients will receive nearly $275,000 to invest in small communities across the state. &nbsp;

“Our state’s smallest communities are finding new and effective ways to become more economically viable and productive,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “The quality-of-life investments being made through this program will generate economic development success and prosperity for Kansans now and in the future.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Awardees are located in communities with a population of 5,000 or less, as required by state statute (KS Stat 9-2324 (2021)). They are also required to provide a minimum 10-percent match as well as complete the projects within 12 months. Projects must be focused on economic development and revitalization efforts through one of the following quality-of-life categories:&nbsp;

Hutch Post area projects are in the Community vibrancy category for both North Newton in Harvey County ($25,000)&nbsp; and Zenda in Kingman County ($24,512).

Funding for the SEED program, which is administered by the Kansas Department of Commerce, is provided through the Technology Enabled Fiduciary Financial Institutions (TEFFI) Development and Expansion Fund. The TEFFI Act was enacted in 2021 through bipartisan legislation to promote economic development throughout the state.&nbsp;
