Youth City Council forum is Saturday

TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp; on Thursday announced that the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in partnership with the Kansas Alliance for Drug Endangered Children, is awarding nearly $2 million to 18 Kansas service agencies in the first round of All Hands on DECK (Drug Endangered Children of Kansas) grants.

Three Hutch Post area agencies are grant recipients. Rise Up Reno Prevention Network will receive $122,000,&nbsp;Pratt County DEC (Drug Endangered Children) Alliance will receive $85,000 and the Harvey County Health Department will receive $130,000.

The grants will help these organizations better identify and support children living in an environment where a parent or other caregiver uses, distributes, manufactures, or cultivates illegal drugs.

“It is critical that we stop the devastating toll drug addiction and exposure have on our children,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “This funding will make resources and help available to local communities and law enforcement working to curb the generational impact drugs have on Kansas families.”

This is the first round of grants being provided through the $6 million Kansas received from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (Department of Justice) to address substance use and misuse, promote public safety, reduce overdose deaths, and support access to prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery services in communities as well as the justice system.

Approximately 140,860 Kansas children are living in environments where their parent or caregiver uses substances, and an estimated 5,155 Kansas infants are born exposed to substances every year. Children living in drug environments are at risk for devastating effects, including severe neglect, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and developmental delays.

“We are committed to keeping Kansas kids safe, and that is exactly what these funds will do,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;KDHE&nbsp;Secretary Janet Stanek. “We trust that communities will work with the resources allocated to them to provide a focused approach in their respective communities.”

The selected community organizations will focus on developing a response to address drug endangered children that fits their community’s unique needs. Activities include providing training to multidisciplinary professionals; providing training on adverse childhood experiences and trauma-informed systems of care; establishing community drug drop boxes; and distributing care bags with necessities for children placed in custody.

Local agencies receiving All Hands on DECK grants

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The new CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, Benjamin Anderson, is coming from a job in Colorado and having seen a state where Medicaid has expanded, in returning to his wife's home state of Kansas, he sees how vital it is that it happens here.

"My role in Colorado with the Hospital Association was to provide support, back up, help build the capacities of the 45 hospitals outside the Front Range," Anderson said. "We saw the direct impact of Medicaid Expansion on those hospitals, the health of those hospitals. Colorado has not lost a rural hospital."

It's not that there aren't financial struggles in rural healthcare generally, but expanding Medicaid can help keep those hospitals viable and available.

"Colorado has a pretty strong track record around keeping rural hospitals strong," Anderson said. "I think a key part of that was that every person in a community was able to access the health care that they needed at the appropriate time and place. If we don't have coverage for everyone in a population, what happens is we access it the most expensive ways, which is through the emergency room."

This is going to be an emphasis for Anderson, until the policy changes.

"I intend to be a very public supporter of Medicaid Expansion," Anderson said. "Because, I believe, it's in the best interests of the community."

Anderson starts full time in Hutchinson in early January.

New HRMC CEO: Medicaid Expansion would have 'direct impact'

"Thanks to our partners, Hutchinson USD 308 for providing us the backpacks."

The average attendance for a Saturday Night at the Y so far this school year is between 80 and 100.

Middle schoolers to get a gift at Y Saturday

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of North Main Street and West Second Avenue (Part 1 of a two-part series).

 There have been some very substantial buildings on this Hutchinson corner. One of them was the Wolcott Building. The seven-story buff building was built in 1937 by longtime resident Mahlon Ely, on land owned by F.D. Wolcott. 

It was the first air-conditioned office building in Kansas. The construction cost was $250,000. The architects for the structure were Mann &amp; Co., the builder was Foy Construction. The first photo shows the Wolcott under construction. 

In 1955, there was an addition to it by D.C. Bass &amp; Son of Oklahoma City. The second photo shows the Wolcott in 1965 with its trail of neighbors to the north: Frease Drug, A.G. Edwards, Cobbler Shoes, Boren's Sporting Goods, Esquire Bar and Factory Outlet Shoes. 

In 1985, W.A. Michaelis of Wichita bought the building from Dick Popp, assistant publisher of the Huch News. Michaelis also owned the Hutch National Bank. The bank wanted the property for its use. With the A/C and heating needing replacement and the tenancy going down, it was doomed for demolition. The third photo shows the Wolcott coming down in 1988, truly a sad day. 

The fourth photo shows the 201 N. Main property today, DCI park and gazebo. The property is owned by Data Center Inc. of 20 W. 2nd.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Wolcott Building - Vol. 47

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One unique and large holiday event some in the area may not know about is the St. Lucia Festival in Lindsborg. The St. Lucia Festival is on Dec. 9 and festivities begin in town at 8:30 a.m. and end around 3 p.m.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Lindsborg Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau Director Holly Lofton said the first public celebration of St. Lucia for Lindsborg was in 1962. Lofton describes the festival as something "truly remarkable" and has to be seen in person to get the "full experience."

"With our Swedish heritage, it is definitely something that we don't miss here," Lofton said. "We celebrate annually."&nbsp;

Lindsborg is known as Little Sweden U.S.A. Many of the population consists of those who are of Swedish descent. St. Lucia was an Italian Christian martyr. Lofton said the Swedish story is that during a time of famine, a woman in white with her head crowned with candles came to them on a bow of a ship with food that saved them from famine.&nbsp;

"If you are Swedish, the story goes a little bit farther," Lofton said. "Where as the oldest daughter dresses as Lucia and brings her family breakfast before they're up and so traditional might be saffron buns or things like that with coffee but you know for kids that were doing it on their own, the woman that was crowned as the first Lucia, here that we did publicly in the 1960s, she made rice krispies for her family so it depends on what the family does and what kids want to do but it's still something that's celebrated."

Lofton said festival attendees can come prepared with a full list of activities to do. Churches, the Lindsborg Community Library and local businesses all get involved. The Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers who are made up of high school students, plan and host the majority of the festival and draw a senior girl's name out of a hat to be Lucia. The fourth grade students of Lindsborg will also crown a Lucia and Star Boy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;"We have a girl who is crowned with a battery operated candle crown and then the high school Lucia is actually the original Lucia crown that was made locally by a metal smith in the 1960s," Lofton said. "And his daughter was the first Lucia to wear it and we still use that today so all kinds of just really beautiful imagery."

Lofton said even though not all of Lindsborg is of Swedish descent, the community host a St. Lucia celebration together because it helps enrich the town. She also said it's a way to remember the hard work of the people that helped progress Lindsborg into what it is today.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I can tell you from my own experience, I don't have that Swedish heritage, and it's something I look forward to every year because it is just beautiful and yet it's a beautiful way to ring in the holiday season."

At 10:15 a.m. the Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers and fourth graders will perform downtown on N. Main St. The Swedish Folk Dancers and Lindsborg Folkdanslag will perform at Bethany Lutheran Church. The St. Lucia Service will follow at 3 p.m. with a reception afterwards.&nbsp;

In the evening on Dec. 9, Lindsborg will also host its Heritage Christmas from 5:30-8:30 p.m at the Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum.&nbsp;

The event will include live music at the Swedish Pavilion, kids crafts and sugar cookie decoration and coffee with Mayor Clark Shultz. Coffee with the mayor will take place from 6-7 p.m. during Heritage Christmas.&nbsp;

"You can get out of the cool weather and just go inside and really enjoy some wonderful music," Lofton said.&nbsp;

St. Lucia Festival is Lindsborg tradition

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The trial for a Wichita man who is charged with abducting a woman in Wichita and then trying to kill her at Cheney State Park and wounding a child is scheduled for January 23, 2024.

Kamden Campos is facing 12 counts including six counts of attempted first degree murder one count of kidnapping, three counts of aggravated battery and two counts of criminal threat.

The six counts of attempted murder and the single kidnapping count carry sentences of up to 55 years in prison if Campos is convicted.

Campos was arrested after allegedly abducting a woman and her family in Wichita. They drove out to Cheney Lake. When the woman tried to escape in a vehicle, Campos allegedly shot at the vehicle hitting a 2-year-old girl.

The woman drove into Sedgwick County where she called 911. The child survived.

Trial in 2021 attempted murder case scheduled for January

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Seven area organizations were recent recipients of $1,500 donations from Lowen Corporation. Lowen President Tracy Metzger and Paige Evans, Director of Human Resources presented checks to representatives of Brighthouse, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County, Kansas Honor Flight, First Call for Help, Reins of Hope, Oxford House and Shop With a Sheriff.

Brighthouse, First Call for Help, Oxford House and Shop With a Sheriff received the funds to help less fortunate Reno County residents with upcoming holiday expenses. The funds donated to Kansas Honor Flight, Reins of Hope and BBBS are intended to allow local residents to participate in these organizations’ activities.

“We are proud to call Hutchinson and Reno County home to Lowen Corporation headquarters and we’re happy to share our success to benefit local non-profit organizations,” said Metzger. “There’s no better time to assist local organizations than the holiday season.”

Lowen Corporation donations benefit local organizations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Community Foundation recently awarded a total of $30,000 in grants to groups and nonprofit organizations serving Reno County.

Fourteen projects received funding from Changemakers at Work grants at a ceremony Nov. 16 at Pizaacos, 112 S. Main St., as part of Third Thursday festivities in Hutchinson.

Changemakers at Work grants are small funds available to Reno County residents and organizations working on projects that spark community spirit and pride, build social capital, and create opportunities for positive changes that strengthen the county.

This year’s awards ranged from $1,000 to $2,500. The grants are supported by the Fund for Reno County, the foundation’s unrestricted fund designed to meet the ever-changing needs of Reno County.

Grants were awarded by the community foundation’s Changemakers at Work Grants Committee made up of foundation board members and Reno County residents selected through a public application process. Members of the 2023 committee are Jason Depew, Meg Green, Lexi Jobe, Kelley Lester, Lauren Mobley, Adam Pina, Cammie Rumback, Holly Spaniol and Stacy Watson.

The following organizations received grants:

Arlington United Methodist Church, $2,500:&nbsp;Grant funds will allow for the addition of a permanent shade structure for the sand area in the community park, encouraging outdoor play and interaction even on the hottest of days.

City of Haven, $1,000:&nbsp;Grant funding will be used to help with the development of a dog park, which will provide an adequate and safe gathering place for Haven dog owners and their pets to enjoy activity and interaction with one another.

City of Pretty Prairie, $2,500:&nbsp;The city will use grant funding to add outdoor seating, outdoor games, shade and turf to an empty lot in the business district. The resulting activity park will provide outdoor space for the after-school program at the adjacent library as well as during community events.

Creekside Neighborhood, $2,500:&nbsp;Neighbors will build a sense of community through a group cleanup day at Bernard White Park in Hutchinson’s Creekside Neighborhood. Funds will be used for a mailing to neighbors announcing the workday, dumpster and equipment rental, gloves, tools, and food for the volunteers.

Emanuel Lutheran Church, $1,910:&nbsp;Grant funds will be directed toward Emanuel’s ongoing mission to share rebuilt bicycles with low-income individuals. The bicycles provide an economical way to reach various destinations within the city, such as job interviews, places of employment, medical appointments and community events.

Fairfield-USD 310, $2,500:&nbsp;The Falcon Family Program will create and foster an interconnected web of supportive relationships among children and trusted adults, who may be staff members or volunteers. Access to supportive relationships can contribute to a reduction in risky behavior and build a sense of belonging and community. Grant funding will be used to purchase materials and curriculum.

Farmington Park Neighborhood, $2,500:&nbsp;Farmington Park neighbors are eager to enhance the new trail recently installed in the park by the City of Hutchinson. These grant funds will allow for planting new shade trees where older ones had to be removed and for the installation costs of two benches already purchased for placement along the trail, making the trail even more inviting.

Founders Neighborhood, $2,500:&nbsp;After observing high rates of neighborhood participation during the city’s spring cleanup day each year, Founders Neighborhood leaders, in collaboration with Iglesia Nueva Vida church members, will organize an additional fall cleanup – complete with volunteers to assist those who have difficulty transporting objects to the dumpster provided. Grant funding will cover the cost of mailings to advertise the spring and fall cleanup days and the cost of meals, gloves and necessary tools for event volunteers. This joint effort among residents aims to help create a cleaner place to live and instill a greater sense of neighborhood pride.

Grace Arbor Neighborhood, $2,500:&nbsp;Residents of Grace Arbor Neighborhood will purchase soccer goals with their grant funding as the first step in turning an empty space into a gathering place for the neighborhood. The Salvation Army of Reno County is partnering with neighbors and Hutchinson’s Parks Department in turning the vacant field near its building into a park through a series of improvement projects.

Rise Up Reno Prevention Network, $1,500:&nbsp;Reno County students in fifth through eighth grades will spend a day at Hutchinson High School learning and building leadership skills with high school Rise Up Reno Youth Leaders, who lead groups in fun projects, presentations and activities. Funding will assist with the fee for a featured speaker during YES.

Salvation Army of Reno County, $2,500:&nbsp;Grant funding will cover the cost of three benches and the concrete necessary for installation as part of one of the first steps neighbors have requested in creating a park in the lot near the Salvation Army’s building. The City of Hutchinson, Salvation Army and neighborhood residents are partnering on planning and carrying out this project.

SW Bricktown Neighborhood, $2,500:&nbsp;SW Bricktown Neighborhood will use this grant funding to purchase two soccer goals for residents and community members to enjoy while in the park. Neighbors believe the addition of this equipment will increase use of the park, creating more opportunities for neighbors to engage with one another.

The Mary Magdalene House, $2090:&nbsp;The Mary Magdalene House building is utilized for mental health awareness, mental health classes, mental health connection groups, grief therapy, clinical counseling services, and events for foster care/adoptive families. The organization is continuing to add programming, and because many programs occur at night, the funding will be used for a solar-powered light to illuminate the parking lot, helping to ensure the safety of attendees.

Vieyra Honors Foundation, $1,000:&nbsp;Residents sparked a conversation with their Hutchinson City Council representative about the possibility of bringing back the eternal flame that once burned at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial at the intersection of First Avenue and Walnut Streets. The City of Hutchinson and Kansas Gas Service collaborated with community members to ensure the return of the eternal flame. Grant funds will help with fuel costs and maintenance of this memorial that is a source of community pride.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Community foundation grants $30K to 14 Reno County projects

TOPEKA — Safe Kids Kansas presented its Annual Awards on Tuesday, December 5. The awards recognized outstanding contributions by individuals, coalitions, organizations and businesses toward reducing unintentional injury to Kansas children. The awards were presented virtually via Zoom.

The Outstanding Partnership for Child Safety award was presented to the McPherson Family YMCA. McPherson Family YMCA opened a Life Jacket Loaner Station in their YMCA facility in Spring of 2023. This pilot program, which allows swimmers and boaters to borrow a lifejacket for FREE for up to 14 days at a time, is open to everyone in the McPherson community and surrounding area. The McPherson Y’s LifeJacket Loaner Station has lifejackets available in sizes ranging from infant to Adult 4XL that can be borrowed at no charge for use at birthday parties, lake outings, camping and fishing trips, hotel pools, etc. Recently, the McPherson YMCA partnered with the local Special Olympics to loan the lifejackets to its athletes.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gregg Wamsley with the Hutchinson Public Library told Hutch Post this week that there is still work to do on the project in the library's meeting rooms.

"I would say we're two thirds to three quarters of the way done," Wamsley said. "We had planned on a Dec. 1 completion date. We missed that. We're looking now at probably right at the beginning, the first week of January to be completed."

Patrons will have the opportunity to help the library name the new meeting rooms by visiting the service desk this month.

"We're working in the oldest portion of the building," Wamsley said. "You know as well as anybody, when you remodel, you discover things. There were things that had to be corrected."

The finished product will be more spaces for patrons.

"We're moving up from three meeting rooms that can be scheduled and used to four," Wamsley said. "All the meeting rooms will have new audio visual equipment in them. Some will have new furniture. We are adding a kitchenette to our largest room. When people want to have snacks and things, they want to have for their meeting, there will be a place to clean up and a refrigerator and stuff to use. We're putting a bathroom in that hall. That hall used to have bathrooms. Now it will have one again."

The list of names for the rooms were suggested by staff.

Library rooms remodel not quite finished

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System Board President Allen Fee introduced new system CEO, Benjamin Anderson, at a public event Wednesday morning at the hospital pavilion.

"It's really rare when talent, opportunity, timing and fit come together," Fee said. "It did. We're lucky. We feel very fortunate. The permanent position has been open since last November. We've had numerous inquiries from search firms, candidates interested in the open position. The Board had made the decision, we need to get some stability within the system, we need to make some changes and we need to get some things done. We had held off on an extensive search until August, when we got an email from Benjamin Anderson."

Anderson said the goal of his moving back to Kansas was to be closer to family. His wife's family has land in northeast Kansas near Sabetha.

"He was going to be moving his family," Fee said. "He was looking at several opportunities. He was very interested in the opportunity we had here in Hutchinson. That led to several meetings, vetting, met with the board several times, met with leadership at the hospital. He was on kind of a tight window, in terms of when he was going to be making a move, end of October, first part of November. After our board and leadership in the system had spent some time with Ben, the orders to me were pretty clear. Don't lose this guy."

Anderson understands that leadership and vision are vital, but it really does come down to caring. It comes down to making sure those who take care of patients really have the time and resources to use their healing gifts to the maximum amount, so that people not only feel better when they leave, but they are better, for the rest of their life.

"Your job as a CEO is to help doctors and nurses help other people," Anderson said. "If you're not effective doing that, they ought to get rid of you. What good are you? Really. I mean, it's more complex than that, right? Develop vision, strategy, there's community engagement is important, but the bottom line is, we help caregivers help other people. We do that through developing systems that makes it easier for the caregiver to help the people. That involves financial systems and strategic and operational stuff and it's complex, but really, I feel called into that."

During the four years prior to joining HRHS, Benjamin served as Vice President for Rural Health and Hospitals at the Colorado Hospital Association.&nbsp;Before his move to Colorado, Benjamin served as CEO of Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

Hospital CEO introduced Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved an update to the Industrial Revenue Bond amount for the city's spec building with Salt City Investments at their meeting on Tuesday.

"In March of 2022, the City Council had passed a resolution determining advisability of issuing IRBs of $4 million for Salt City Investments, LLC," said Finance Director Angela Richard. "The amount has changed to $5.3 million. The new revised cost benefit analysis, even with the new revised increased amount of the bonds, every party involved still has a greater benefit than cost, evident by a 1.0 ratio or higher. It still is advisable that we issue these bonds."

Brad Pryor with Salt City Investments explained why they need the additional bonds.

"We have two prospective tenants," Pryor said. "The feedback we're receiving from our tenants is they would like to see the leasehold improvements wrapped into their lease. Originally, that wasn't part of our business model. That's a feedback that we've received. It's beneficial, obviously for the tenant to have leasehold improvements wrapped in with the IRB incentives. That's where the $5.3 million comes in. We currently have two prospective tenants that are very interested."

Pryor said lease agreements are out to both tenants and the first to sign will get the building.

"It's been very successful," Pryor said. "We're very close with landing a tenant. We hope that this first one is a homerun and then we can look at phase two. My goal with Salt City Investments is to always have a building for the community to market that allows us to bring in prospective businesses, because everybody has land. When you have a spec building ready, it just puts you a leg up compared to the other community."

The additional authority was approved on Tuesday.

Industrial Revenue Bond update should help land spec building client

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Salvation Army’s I’ll Fight Day comes to the Reno County community this weekend on Saturday, December 9 and will continue the $20 bill challenge. 

The results are in from the first Saturday of the challenge that took place on Dec. 2. There were 75 $20 Bills, which totals $1,500. This also resulted in the largest daily kettle total of the season.

“Typically we only have around $300-$500 in $20 Bills and it definitely made it a lot more exciting while counting buckets. However, we’re really excited, because we only matched $1,500 of the $5,500 match that the donors gave”, said Major Paul James. Those donors have agreed to continue to encourage the community again for the next two Saturdays.

This Saturday will be another $20 Bill Challenge, but it will also be The National “I’ll Fight Day” Challenge.

The name “I’ll Fight Day” is in honor of the final sermon given by William Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army. As he stood at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England and spoke to over 7,000 Salvationists, Booth's final words summed up the heart and mission of The Salvation Army.

“While women weep, as they do now, I'll fight; While children go hungry, as they do now, I'll fight; While men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I'll fight; While there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, While there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I'll fight; I'll fight to the very end!”

“We generally think about the hundreds of families who come to The Salvation Army for Christmas Food Boxes and well over 1000 children who will receive toys, but we help over 12% of the community as they come through our doors over the course of a year.”, said Major James. The challenge of “I’ll Fight Day” is for others to come along side of The Salvation Army to fight for Hope in the lives of our community members. 

You can help the Salvation Army “Fight” through financial donations, as The Salvation Army has struggled financially to meet the needs of the community this year. This can also be through volunteering to ring bells, or volunteering to help with giving out toys and food this holiday season.

First '$20 bill Saturday' is largest kettle day this year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The every other year tradition of the Prairie Nutcracker is at the Fox Theatre in Hutchinson Dec. 8-10.

"Prairie Nutcracker was an idea that was born back in 2000," said production director Sarah Snider. "We were looking at the traditional Nutcracker and thinking, what's a fun, unique way that we could change this and make it special to this area in particular? We came up with this idea of a Prairie Nutcracker. It's an adaptation and we are honoring the pioneer spirit of Kansas. You will have a Kansas and Americana theme throughout the whole show."

The score was adapted from Tchaikovsky by Omaha, Nebraska native Rick Kuethe.&nbsp;

"We have 35 local area students starting at the age of eight, up through our high school students," Snider said. "Then, we also have adult dignitaries that join us. Then, this year, we have a guest studio appearance. We have 14 students from Salina, Tamara Howe School of Dance, that are coming to dance in our farm scene and our Act II opening scene, so almost 60 people total in our cast."

Students are asked to have at least a year of dance training before being a part of the cast.

"They already have a little bit of a background when they come to us," Snider said. "We actually only have seven short weeks to put this together. We've been spending Sunday afternoons in the studio, rehearsing and putting all those details on to this. They are all quick learners and we are really excited to share with you everything that they have been working on."

Performances are Friday, Dec. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 10 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the Fox Theatre Box Office at 18 East First in Hutchinson.

Prairie Nutcracker to take Fox stage this weekend

KINGMAN COUNTY —A Kansas sheriff's deputy was injured in an accident just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Dodge Durango driven by Kingman County Sheriff's Deputy Logan Richard Self, 33, Maize, was northbound in the 2700 Block of Main Street in Kingman, actively trying to catch up in a pursuit with emergency equipment activated. 

The SUV slid thru intersection, struck a ditch and rolled. EMS transported Self to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of a minor injury. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

 </figure>KINGMAN COUNTY —A Kansas sheriff's deputy was injured in an accident just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in Kingman County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Dodge Durango driven by Kingman County Sheriff's Deputy Logan Richard Self, 33, Maize, was northbound in the 2700 Block of Main Street in Kingman, actively trying to catch up in a pursuit with emergency equipment activated. The SUV slid thru intersection, struck a ditch and rolled. EMS transported Self to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of a minor injury. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kelly Anne Lanham spoke to the Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday encouraging them to see the change in the first SCKEDD project house that is now ready to be listed for sale.

"I wanted to personally invite all of you to our new listing that I just listed," Lanham said. "It is SCKEDD's first Resurgence project that they have completed. It is at 1508 West 17th. SCKEDD was awarded $500,000 in ARPA COVID relief funds. Their goal is to start kind of a seed fund to keep flipping houses in Hutchinson. Our first goal is five, but ultimately, we'd like to complete 15 houses."

The listing is just west of 17th and Hendricks.

"It is a four bedroom two and a half bath house," Lanham said. "When it was purchased, it was vacant. An older gentleman had aged in place. It was very dilapidated, to the point where, new sewer line, new plumbing, new electric, completely redone, so pretty much a new house. It's beautiful."

The idea is that the money from the sale can be put back into the program.

"It's also houses that are too overwhelming for the average person to purchase and even an investor to purchase," Lanham said. "This house, at the end of the day, when we sell it, it's going to be a completely break even, if not losing just a little bit of money. Those houses that would really not be possible to redo."
