HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann voted against the latest attempt to extend the budget deadline for another few weeks.

"I am way past sick of it," Mann said. "I voted against the continuing resolution yesterday in Washington. It would just kick the can down the road for another month, which is the third or fourth time that's occurred since September. Here's the bottom line. As a nation, we are $34 trillion in debt. We have got to get our spending under control. We've got to return to regular order. We've got to get to the basic appropriations process."

Mann said a lot of the underlying work is done, but they just haven't finished up the details.

"We have gone through the appropriations process last year in a more detailed, thorough manner than has been done in a long, long, long time in Washington," Mann said. "We looked at every agency, every office within every department in every agency, really talking about, where can we have cuts? There's a lot of amendments that I voted for to make some cuts, to get some efficiencies, to kind of get things reined back in, but then, what happened last fall was changing out the Speaker and things got delayed. The whole thing is delayed, but it's way past time that Congress does its job and gets budget resolutions passed and the government funded."

The next deadline for the government's funding comes in early March.

Mann votes against continuing resolution

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA said that membership is continuing to go up and it is impressive as they looked back at 2023.

"We ended up with, at the end of the year, 4509 total members of the Y here in Hutchinson," Foster said. "When we finished 2022, we were at a little over 4000. We grew almost 500 membership units this past year, which is great. It's also great to be able to retain a lot of our current members, too, in addition to adding more people, getting more people involved, knowing more about what the Y has to offer and that we're here for everybody and we have financial assistance. There's really no barriers for people not to become a member of the Y or to be involved in our programs."

The amount invested by the YMCA board through donations from the public to keep those barriers low is significant, according to advisory board chair, Shane DeWeese.

"We raised a little over $100,000 last year for programs, for people that need financial assistance," DeWeese said. "We don't want to turn anybody away. We gave away $200,000 worth of program assistance. We're hoping to increase that, so nobody has an excuse not to come to the YMCA and participate."

Wind Chills well below zero early Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The woman. The pony-tailed assassin. The legend, Jackie Stiles.

Small-town Kansas girl Jackie Stiles appreciates any opportunity to make her way closer to home and tell her story. After a stellar collegiate basketball career at Southwestern Missouri State, leading the Lady Bears to the Final Four, and a professional career cut short by injuries, Stiles knows a thing or two about overcoming adversity on and off the court. This message of perseverance and determination was delivered to Hutchinson Public Schools 7th graders on Thursday, January 18th.&nbsp;

Ellen Corey began her Project-Based Learning class passion project about women’s basketball and the WNBA by writing about something she was passionate about and interested in learning more about. “I picked it because it was something I am really passionate about. So many people just talk about men’s basketball. It was important to me to research women who have made an impact on the game of basketball.” said Corey.

Along the way, her research turned toward Jackie Stiles’ renowned basketball career. “I researched statistics of female basketball players, and Jackie Stiles’ numbers caught my eye.” Shandi Webster, a Hutchinson Middle School 7 teacher, encouraged Corey to contact Stiles on her website, which led Stiles on the road to Hutchinson Middle School 7.

Stiles delivers positive message&nbsp;

Addressing the packed auditorium of HMS-7 students and staff, Stiles focused on a positive message about following your dreams and accepting the reality that hard work is required to achieve anything great. Stiles recounted her early basketball days when she had to bribe her siblings to rebound balls to her current business ventures. She relayed stories of four-hour practice sessions to cutting down nets after big wins. “There is not a better feeling in the whole world than when you accomplish a dream,” said Stiles. “Follow your heart and trust your gut.”

She described overcoming adversity as a young athlete from a small town. Claflin, KS, didn’t have opportunities like basketball camps or even a local restaurant. There were times when Stiles’ mother worked multiple jobs to afford camps for her children. Stiles recounted a series of weekends that her father drove her to Kansas City for camps. While being recruited by colleges as a senior in Claflin, neighbors would deliver casseroles as the family hosted home visits by 18 colleges within a span of 19 days.&nbsp;

In 2018 Stiles was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer, ocular melanoma. After treatment, she decided to turn her energy toward actions that aligned with her core values. She pivoted her career away from collegiate coaching and into personal fitness, as she now owns a NexGen Fitness and works as a private personal trainer. Stiles still travels and hosts basketball camps. She boasted a jam-packed camp schedule slated for this summer.&nbsp;

Her message resonated with the crowd, prompting many students to raise their hands eagerly during the allotted time for questions. When asked about her favorite memory from her basketball career, Stiles told stories about bonding with her teammates and taking a limousine to Wendy’s when trying to find a budget-friendly meal while staying at a Ritz-Carlton. Drawing from her varied experience playing and coaching, she encouraged teamwork and selfless actions on and off the court. “You can accomplish so much more when everyone has bought in.”

After the speech, the excitement moved to the gymnasium, where Stiles signed autographs and posed for pictures with the students. Boys and girls alike waited in line for their chance to have “Jackie Stiles #10” sharpied on anything from a warm-up jacket to a basketball.&nbsp;

Corey’s main takeaway from her project is that “women can do anything men can do, if not better. I learned that if you’re truly passionate about something, you have to pursue it relentlessly.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson said conversations still continue on the best way to purpose current facilities in the district to move into the next several decades.

"Our first step was to have some focus groups, some smaller groups," Johnson said. "From this, then we'll want to open it up to community meetings. We'll get those announced and advertised when we have those, so the community can come to those. The focus groups are kind of to help us just get ready for those community meetings. We're really sharing a year's worth of work with that facility committee, steering committee that we have."

Priorities are being made for entry points into the district.

"The first is the early entry point, early education," Johnson said. "How do we want to best serve students in that three to five range and sometimes even zero to five range? The Governor's State of the State address talked about supporting early childhood education. We want to be poised for that. The next is that transition into high school. What are we doing in the middle school arena to make sure we're offering the best middle school education we can, to get our students ready for high school."

Currently, in Hutchinson, students are in buildings in 7th and 8th grades each for a single year and then on to Hutch High from there. There at least is some thought of having a more traditional middle school and having it start at 6th grade, but how to do that with the facilities that exist or if something new would be needed hasn't been fleshed out yet.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Association is now accepting arts vendor entries for the 2024 Hutchinson Art Fair.

Visitors can browse over 40 artist booths and enjoy live music, kids swag bags and more.

The fair takes place on Saturday, May 11, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

There will be at least 15 cash prizes ranging from $100 - $500 each. A 10’ x 10’ booth space costs $85 for one artist, or $110 for two artists sharing a booth.

2024 Hutchinson Art Fair date set for May 11

Haven Senior Citizen Center is embarking on a fundraising campaign with the goal of replacing the aging chairs within the facility. 

The current chairs, having served faithfully for many years, are now showing signs of wear and tear, compromising the comfort and safety of the senior members. 

Recognizing the importance of providing a conducive and supportive environment for the elderly community, the center aims to acquire new chairs that offer improved ergonomic design and enhanced durability. 

The new chairs will not only contribute to the overall aesthetics of the center but, more importantly, prioritize the well-being of the senior citizens during various activities and gatherings. With their ergonomic features and modern construction, the upgraded chairs will ensure better posture, reduce the risk of discomfort or injury, and enhance the overall experience for members. 

Investing in new chairs is a vital step towards maintaining a vibrant and inclusive space where senior citizens can continue to engage in meaningful activities, fostering a sense of community, camaraderie, and well-being.

Haven Senior Center raising money for new chairs

Launched on January 10, 2024, a new video series features U.S. farmers explaining how they responsibly manage the land and natural resources entrusted to their care. “Stories of Stewardship” was produced by U.S. Wheat Associates, the industry's export market development organization. Each episode focuses on how wheat producers help feed the world while acting as stewards of soil, water and the environment.&nbsp;

“Consumers around the world want to know how their food is grown and U.S. wheat is definitely a food ingredient,” said USW Vice President of Communications Steve Mercer. “Here at home, we know U.S. farmers work every day to nourish and improve the land and produce a sustainable source of high-quality wheat. The purpose of the 'Stories of Stewardship' series is to share this information with international buyers, millers, wheat food processors, and consumers who value the quality and reliability of U.S. wheat.”

USW developed the video series to share the impressive stories of stewardship across the different U.S. wheat production regions. The six-episode series features five wheat farmers in five states. Each episode provides a look into how the concept of stewardship is deeply ingrained in farmers who feel responsible for continually nourishing and improving their land to contribute to a sustainable source of high-quality wheat for the world.&nbsp;

Episode 1 focuses on the variety of sustainable practices applied by these families to produce different classes of wheat across the wide range of growing conditions in the United States. TOPEKA, Kan. — As the Kansas House prepares to vote on the Republican-backed tax package on Thursday, Elizabeth Patton with AFP-Kansas notes that a poll they commissioned earlier this month said 58% of voters favor the single-rate tax system change that is part of the proposed legislation, including over one-quarter (27%) strongly favoring this proposal.

"These tax reductions are incredibly affordable and sustainable and something that we can look at for the long term," Patton said. "Right size the government, where Kansans get to keep more of their hard-earned money."

Savings would mostly happen at the two ends of the income spectrum, with those making $25,000 a year and those making $150,000 a year getting about the same break of between $300 and $400. 

Middle income Kansans would not see much change, between $42,500 and $70,000 a year saving about 75 cents. In fact, a couple would need to make around $200,000 a year to see over $500 in tax savings. 

A potentially more impactful piece of the bill for low income property owners is an increase in the exemption on the 20 mills of school-related statewide property tax going from $40,000 to potentially $100,000. 

As this portion of the school funding formula is sent to the state and redistributed, and the majority of property value in the state is in the larger cities, for counties like Reno County, it could be real savings without much pain to school budgets. It is important to note that the bill passed the Senate, but did not have a veto-proof majority at the time of the vote on Wednesday.

"I hope that they see that this bill helps every single Kansan get tax relief," Patton said. "I think I heard Ty Masterson say yesterday this is an inflation buster bill. That was a great way to put it."

Tax bill can be looked at 'for the long term'

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz said that for the 2024 Fair, there will be more options for Grandstand seating than they have had before.

"We sat down and really kind of redesigned how we are going to do the Grandstand seating area," Schulz said. "We're moving the stage all the way back to the old bunker."

They will be using part of the track to create more space in front of the stage.

"There's room actually, on the track area, that we're going to be putting a special platform on there if we do get rain, or anything like that," Schulz said. "Maybe I just jinxed myself. We are setting it up where, like for the Oak Ridge Boys and possibly for our Christian concert, we're going to have seated events down there. During some of the other major Rock and Country, we're going to have it as standing."

Schulz said in consulting with artists and with other vendors, the Grandstand needed more standing room.

"We're also creating one, possibly two, additional beverage areas down there, plus Porta Potties," Schulz said. "This just gives that more up front. This age now wants to be down up and close, so we want to build up that. Then, what we're doing is, up right in front of the grandstand itself, we're creating a VIP experience. We are having 20 tables up there that you can purchase. That includes two beverages, plus food. Then, there's also room for additional people to stand up there. I believe the total is about 520 people that can be up there. That's kind of more of a VIP experience and then you've got your seated."

For the big concerts then, there will be four tiers most likely, the standing room, VIP and two tiers of seated. 

For the Oak Ridge Boys, the close in seated area that will be standing room for other concerts is almost sold out.

More grandstand seating options at 2024 Fair

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Bigger Avenue and South Main.

The building at 722-724 South Main was first constructed in 1935 as Charles Christopher Grocery and Hardware.

About 1940, it was converted to be the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company. In 1949, it became the Grapette Bottling Co. with Verne Hamilton as president, C.W. Kelley as V.P. and Guy Ankerholtz as Sec./Mgr. The first photo shows Bill Lehman and his Pontiac stock racing car in front of Grapette Bottling in 1950.

Bill raced mostly at the fairgrounds track and was sponsored by the Wat Henry Pontiac Dealership of Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

The building was vacant for a time, then Richard Blick moved his beer distributorship to this location between 1963-1971. The second photo shows Blick's sponsorship of the week's professional boxing championships broadcast on <a href="https://www.kwbwradio.com/default.asp?sec_id=140000775">KWBW radio</a> in 1967.

 Between 1979-1982, the building became the Seven-Up Bottling Co. warehouse. 

Between 1983-1987, it was S&amp;S Classic Cars  owned by Eldon Steffans. The third photo shows the 722-724 S. Main building today, owned by Barb, Jon and Donald Badget, and used for warehouse storage.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Grapette Bottling Co. - Vol. 53

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Join the Buhler Education Foundation on Saturday, Jan. 20 for an evening to raise funds and awareness for the Accelerator and Innovation Grant to benefit childcare in the Buhler USD 313 district.

"As part of the&nbsp;Accelerator Grant, each applicant had to commit to some matching funds," said Laura Meyer Dick with the Foundation. "We are trying to raise $150,000 in our matching funds through the Buhler Education Foundation to create 89 daycare slots, which is desperately needed here in Reno County."

There are still a handful of tickets for Saturday night's event at the Sandhills Event Center in Hutchinson.

Because the Foundation is a non-profit, donations are tax-deductible.

"About 20 years ago, we started a not for profit education foundation to help support the mission of USD 313," Meyer Dick said. "We've done some amazing projects, but this one might top out as our biggest project that we've tackled, to date."

The childcare issue in the community has an effect on human resources everywhere, but Meyer Dick notes that it is an issue in USD 313, as well.

"Just this week, we had a candidate, we needed to hire for a position in the central office," Meyer Dick said. "She was a great candidate, but she didn't have daycare, so she couldn't come to work for us. The need is really there, especially for economic development and growth in this community. It's just exciting to see the school districts taking on this challenge."

This money is dedicated to renovating spaces at Buhler Grade School and a purchased property at 56th and Plum.

Buhler Education Foundation holding child care fundraiser

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt on Wednesday announced that the Kansas Insurance Department recovered $110,026.92 for Reno County residents in 2023. 

Last year, over $16 million was recovered for policyholders statewide, the largest single-year recovery in Kansas history. The Department’s Consumer Assistance Division has recovered over $35 million for Kansans since Commissioner Schmidt first took office in 2019.

“The insurance claims process can be complicated for many – if you are having an issue, I want to hear from you,” said Schmidt. “I am proud of the work the Consumer Assistance Division has done to ensure that Kansans are getting the full benefits from their policies.”

Funds considered “recovered” are calculated when Department staff assists individuals in need of support during their insurance claims process. If a dispute arises between a policyholder and an insurance company, regardless of the type of insurance, the Kansas Insurance Department investigates the complaint. Department staff work with the consumer and the company to ensure the insurance policy is followed and benefits are paid accordingly.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Child Care Task Force held a free Child Care Training Event on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, at The Father's House, Abundant Life Childcare Center, 1505 E. 20th Ave. in Hutchinson.

The training was free for child care providers in Reno County and providers from other counties. An incentive was available for all Reno County licensed providers who attended for their in-service hours. 

Julie Kallas, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the Reno County Health Department gave a presentation about "Comprehensive Preparedness for Daily Life." Three sessions were held during the day and providers signed up for the classes they wanted to attend. Beth Reeder gave presentations on "Children &amp; Their Behaviors," "The Best Exercise for the Brain, is Exercise," and "Parents, How to get them Involved." Ashley Fritschle with Childcare Aware, gave presentations on "Time Out! Taking Time for You," and "A Child's Brain, Some Assembly Required." Katie Perez presented "Building Neuro Resilience." Denise Gerhert taught a CPR/First Aid class Parts A, B, and C. 

The last training in this series will be offered March 2, 2024.

Hutchinson Art Center reopened

TOPEKA, Kan. — According to a social media post from Kansas State Rep. Paul Waggoner, the Republican tax package is due on the floor this week at the statehouse. 

An advocate for small businesses in Topeka, Dan Murray with NFIB's Kansas chapter, talked to Hutch Post earlier this week about the importance of tax relief to small business owners.

"We know that property taxes are the most reviled of the taxes that we have," Murray said. "Certainly, we'd love to see some of that taken care of. The Governor, in her tax proposal, calls for what the state can do, in terms of property tax reform. We do collect 20 mills for school funding. The first $40,000 of that is exempt, so the first $40,000 of valuations for residential properties are exempt. Her proposal calls for up to the first $100,000 to be exempt. I think that's something we could embrace and look towards. Most small business owners file at the individual level."

Waggoner said the proposal includes

a 5.25% flat rate on all income.  The current proposal does address property tax relief (through raising to $80,000 from $40,000 the property value threshold) and ending the food sales tax on June 30th. This would be over $500 million in tax relief, as proposed.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dawn Westfahl is the Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System DAISY Award winner for January.

According to a social media post from the hospital, a patient with over 40 years experience in healthcare said of Westfahl, "After emergency surgery, we were admitted and I was truly blessed to have Dawn Westfahl assigned as my nurse. Her professionalism and fantastic knowledge immediately helped put us at ease. She is one of the most technically knowledgeable nurses I have come across in 40 years of practice, but in addition, she reached me on a human level. I felt that she truly cared about me and not just a job. I really credit part of my quick recovery to her professionalism and expertise."

The award, which recognizes extraordinary nurses who go above and beyond to provide exceptional patient care, is presented monthly to nurses across the country.

The DAISY Nursing Award is part of the DAISY Foundation, a non-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of the autoimmune disease idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The foundation's mission is to honor the compassionate care that Barnes received from his nurses and to recognize the extraordinary work that nurses do every day.

Each month, a nurse will be selected by a committee of nurses at Hutchinson Regional to receive The DAISY Award. At a presentation given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors, the honoree will receive a certificate commending him or her for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” The honoree will also be given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.

The DAISY Nursing Award is open to all licensed nurses, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nurse practitioners. Nominees are evaluated based on their commitment to patient care, clinical expertise, and interpersonal skills.

Westfahl is HRHS Daisy Award Winner

NEWTON, Kan. — A field survey for a proposed culvert replacement on the north side of Newton is expected to begin around Monday, Jan. 22.

The proposed improvement would be on Old Trail Road before it connects to eastbound U.S. 50. That’s east of the north junction of I-135/U.S. 50. The length of the survey is about 2,000 feet and is based on the existing alignment.

The field survey, expected to be completed by March 15, will gather information needed for the detailed design of the proposed improvement.

A member of the survey crew first will contact property owners and/or tenants for permission to enter private property. Survey activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor.

Bill Fox, P.S., Survey Project Manager, Garber, will be in charge of this survey for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Survey for work in Newton starts next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Greg Fast sent a statement to Hutch Post Wednesday updating us on the city manager search.

"The council and I learned yesterday the newly hired city manager starting in mid-March was requesting to be released from his contract for personal family reasons,"&nbsp; Fast said. "The council was set to approve his contract at an upcoming council meeting.  We respect him for his honesty and open communication with the council and have agreed to accommodate him."&nbsp;

"As disappointing as this is, we remain focused on finding the right person for our staff, as well as the citizens of Hutchinson.  I have full confidence in our interim city manager Mary Grace Clements and our staff to continue to move Hutchinson forward as we continue our search for a permanent city manager."

Hutch Chamber Flash Passes on sale

HAVEN, Kan. — According to a letter sent to parents on Tuesday, Haven USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage let them know that Yoder Charter School will be closing at the end of this school year.

The USD 312 Board of Education made the official decision at their board meeting Monday.

"The decision to close Yoder Charter School was not made hastily," Idacavage wrote. "It follows a thorough evaluation of various factors, including enrollment trends, financial impact, allocation of resources and achievement data."

Students currently enrolled at Yoder Charter School will be allowed to enroll at Haven Grade School and Haven Middle School, if they so choose.&nbsp;

"These buildings will work with families to make sure this transition is as smooth as possible," Idacavage said.&nbsp;

The intent is to use the space at Yoder to continue the Little Learners PreK and move forward with additional early childhood opportunities at Yoder for the entire district.
