RENO COUNTY — The Board of Reno County Commissioners will have approval of an extension to the solar moratorium in the county as part of their consent agenda on Wednesday.

The moratorium, if approved as written, would extend until&nbsp;until July 1, 2024. It can be ended by the Board at any time before that they choose, if they want to take the opposite action.

They originally had a moratorium in place to&nbsp;give the county's Planning Commission time to develop solar project regulations.

Given the consensus of the board that additional work is required of the Planning Commission, they are giving them more time to do it.

It appeared at previous meetings that large scale commercial solar is not something the Board of County Commissioners wants in place under any circumstances, but smaller projects may have a chance at approval and narrowing the parameters for those is the work they would like to see continue.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room at the Reno County Courthouse.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education will hold the required non-resident students policy hearing Monday at 5:45 p.m. 

This is the initial step in following a statute passed earlier this year to tell the state how much capacity there is in USD 308 grade levels and buildings so that students can transfer in from other districts, if there is space available.

Speaking generally, if a student is in good standing, USD 308 and the other Reno County districts have traditionally taken transfer students, anyway, so this isn't really a change in anything, just fulfilling the legal requirement.

The meeting will take place at the Administrative Center at 1520 North Plum.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 309 Board of Education will go over the Design Development Estimate from McCown Gordon for many of the bond projects to be done in 2024 at its meeting on Monday.&nbsp;

According to agenda documents, the&nbsp;Design Development estimate is for the work at the Nickerson Elementary School, Nickerson High School, Reno Valley Middle School and South Hutchinson Elementary. 

Work at these campuses includes security film at all glass exterior doors, upgrades at main entrances, bathrooms, the high school auditorium, and an addition at South Hutch Elementary.

The Design Development cost estimate for the project is $4,542,077. That does not include any roof work.&nbsp;

The intended timeline is for the design drawings to be finished by January 2, bidding to happen in January, and approval of the bids in February, so work can start in March over Spring Break for some of the projects.

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 will be hosting a reception at 5:30 p.m. Monday prior to their December board meeting to thank the outgoing board members for their service to the district.

Matt McCabe, Miranda Engleken and Todd Carr will be finishing their service to Buhler at the end of the year.

On the board's agenda starting at 6 p.m. Monday is special recognition for the Buhler High Girls Golf Team, information on the district's Mental Health Intervention Team and their Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) program, approval of the ESSDACK Interlocal Agreement, action on lease agreements regarding construction and equipment and buses, an update from the City of Buhler on their Industrial Park and reports from the district's Director of Finance and Superintendent.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Mary Magdalene House at 7201 East 4th east of Hutchinson, is hosting its 3rd Annual Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. Homemade Jams, Jellies, and Pie Filling will be available by donation.

"The world's problems are not solved in offices, or in Congress, or places like that," said Annette VanBruggen with Mary Magdalene House. "The problems that hit the family are solved in the kitchen. When my kids come home, I can't hardly get them out of the kitchen so that I can actually cook the meal. We have a big kitchen at&nbsp;Mary Magdalene House that we use to service people. They come in, they help us cook meals, we distribute those meals to different people. We make jam, which is a great ministry that we use to help support the ministry and let them talk it out."

You can shop for locally hand crafted goods including tasty treats &amp; eats, Christmas ornaments, items to wear, and artwork.

There will also be wearable Mary Magdalene items including t-shirts, sweatshirts &amp; aprons.

Come enjoy delicious homemade soups for lunch &amp; cinnamon rolls for breakfast, along with coffee from Metropolitan Coffee.

"We have an auction going," VanBruggen said. "It's online&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href="http://marymagdalenehouse.com/?fbclid=IwAR2IkzsvicEtdVAFKgzWwKDhkF26gqbyhGao42nEahs9aujbiQUX-z4woMI" target="_blank">marymagdalenehouse.com</a>. Auction closes Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. You do not need to be present to participate. The Silent Auction also ends at 3 p.m.

All purchased items must be picked up between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. the day of the auction. Special consideration will be given for large items.

The money will pay for the groceries to feed the groups that come to&nbsp;Mary Magdalene House.

"On Sunday mornings, we have a strong recovering addicts group that comes in for a worship service," VanBruggen said. "We serve them breakfast. Right now, we're serving between 45 and 55 people every Sunday morning."

There are groups almost every night at the House for one type of family in need or another.

Christmas Bazaar gives chance to visit Mary Magdalene House

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — EAGLE Media and Vermeer Great Plains came together on Friday evening for the 2023 Adopt a Child turn in party.&nbsp;

Throughout the holiday season, Country 102.9 and the Hutchinson EAGLE Media stations called on the community to adopt 219 children from Reno, Harvey and McPherson counties whose families needed assistance to give them a better Christmas. The stations were given the names thanks to the Kansas Department of Children and Families.

"We had so many bicycles this year, we had to put some of them in a separate room," said organizer and Country 102.9 Program Director, Randy McKay. "The generosity of EAGLE Media listeners is always so humbling. We are happy to be able to help this year and every year."

Adopt A Child recipient parents will pick up gifts next week.

Adopt-A-Child continues at EAGLE Media Center, thanks to Vermeer Great Plains

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Victor and Martha Peña have owned El Patio for 11 years. The local business started off in a trailer and expanded into a restaurant on South Main St. As of Friday afternoon, the&nbsp;Peña's opened a liquor store across the street from their restaurant called The Beer Point.&nbsp;

Victor said he and his wife opened the Beer Point because it made sense with the type of food that's served at El Patio.&nbsp;

"My wife is taking care of the other business, El Patio," Victor said. It's a family business and we decided to open this thing. I don't know nothing about this business I'm just going to go in there and learn."&nbsp;

The Beer Point will serve some Mexican beer brands that include Modelo and Dos Equis. However, Victor said the store will have other options as well.&nbsp;

"We are going to see how can we do it the best way for them," Victor said.&nbsp;

The Beer Point is located at 903 S. Main St.. The stores hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Art Center seeking members for 2024

KINGMAN, Kan. —&nbsp;The Kingman EMS held their Fill the Ambulance Food Drive on Dec. 2 and 3. Kingman EMS was able to deliver 1,940 pounds of food and goods and $771.82 in cash to the local food bank on Thursday.

Kingman EMS food drive; nearly a ton of food

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.)&nbsp; on Friday announced a $500,000 Federal Railroad Administration grant to begin planning and development for an extension of Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer that will connect the existing rail service between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth with Wichita and Newton.

The proposed extension would also include additional stops in Wichita, Newton and a new stop in Arkansas City.

“I have been working with local, state and federal leaders for several years to connect Kansas to the Heartland Flyer by rail,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran. “Connecting communities across these three states will support new economic opportunities for businesses and provide a new means of travel along this busy route. I am pleased to see the first step in this corridor progress and look forward to seeing the project benefit Kansas and the region and look forward to continued dialogue with local stakeholders.”

Sen. Moran led a meeting in 2021 with Amtrak leaders, Kansas legislators and officials from Texas and Oklahoma to discuss the benefits of connecting the Heartland Flyer to Kansas.

Representative Mann's staff will visit counties across the Big First District to assist with navigating federal agencies, expediting passports, resolving tax matters, and more.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club has announced their local winner for the 2024 Youth of the Year.

Zion Burgess won the award for the second straight year at the local level. The award was announced at the local event in the Crystal Ballroom at the Burt on Thursday.

The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

Burgess receives a $1,000 college scholarship thanks to Heartland Credit Union and will compete in the Kansas Youth of the Year competition in the spring. He was 2nd at the state level in 2023.

Burgess is 2024 Youth of the Year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kyle McClure with Buhler USD 313 said the district is working on its plans for the places where additional care for the youngest Crusaders can happen.

"Birth to three is our goal here," McClure said. "We've got two projects that we're working on. We'll have about 60 slots at the old church that we purchased on 56th and Plum. Over at Buhler Grade School, we'll remodel some space for about 20-25."

The child care centers should be a competitive advantage when it comes to recruiting and retaining employees.

"We will make sure that our employees have child care first," McClure said. "We don't believe we'll be able to offer any discount on that, but, just the fact that we'll be able to say, you have a slot for your child here at our daycare, we think is going to be a huge benefit, it's something we talk about in interviews all the time."

The hiring pattern and the capacity will be tailored to the needs of employees first, once construction is complete.

"One of our big concerns is staffing the daycare itself," McClure said. "We probably won't reach full capacity immediately when it opens. We hope we can, but the first slots that we have available and staff for will be to make sure our staff has a slot for their child."

Pricing is not available yet, because they don't know how many staff they will be able to hire.

State Fair movie night Saturday

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Super-fast fiber internet service will soon be available to thousands of Garden City families and businesses, thanks to IdeaTek.&nbsp;

The Buhler-based internet company began construction in Garden City earlier this month, promising unlimited and uncapped speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second. Some areas of the city are expected to be connected by the end of 2023, and residents can secure their spot by signing up at <a href="http://hookmeup.ideatek.com">hookmeup.ideatek.com</a>.

IdeaTek's investment will inject over $5 million into the local economy and provide connectivity for more than 6,000 homes and businesses.

“At IdeaTek, we're committed to bringing high-speed fiber internet to every corner of Kansas, and we're excited to make it a reality in Garden City,” said Daniel Friesen, IdeaTek’s co-founder and chief innovation officer. “Our long-term goal is to provide fiber to as many residents as we can because fiber is hands-down the best technology for high-speed broadband.”&nbsp;

To celebrate the arrival of fiber-optic internet in Garden City, IdeaTek is hosting a special cookie truck event from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17 in the Kohl's parking lot (2310 E Kansas Ave). Everyone who stops by will receive a complimentary cookie from Chunky Chet’s cookie truck. Those who sign up for IdeaTek's fiber-optic internet service will also get a free cup of cookies. Santa Claus will also make a special appearance from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Garden City is one of Kansas’ fastest-growing cities, but its current providers haven’t invested in advanced fiber technology. IdeaTek aims to bridge this gap and deliver a faster, more reliable internet experience. Only fiber is robust enough to support the symmetrical upload and download speeds needed for remote work, education, and healthcare.

Friesen added it will take about two years to build out the entire city. Residents can stay up-to-date on the build by signing up at ideatek.com.&nbsp;

IdeaTek has been serving the Garden City area for several years, including providing fiber connectivity to all of Finney County's government buildings. More recently, IdeaTek secured a Capital Project Fund Grant, enabling the construction of 400 miles of fiber to connect farms, feedlots, and rural residents along the U.S. 83 Highway corridor from Liberal to Scott City, with contributions from the Finney County Commission.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Infants whose parents need to give them up now have a place to be safe in Hutchinson. Hope's Cradle has made its way to the Hutchinson Fire Department. The department plans to install two Hope's Cradle Baby Boxes at Hutchinson Fire stations in the coming months.

 </figure>EMMIE BOESE&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Infants whose parents need to give them up now have a place to be safe in Hutchinson. Hope's Cradle has made its way to the Hutchinson Fire Department. The department plans to install two Hope's Cradle Baby Boxes at Hutchinson Fire stations in the coming months.The fire department held a press conference on Dec. 7 to talk about the potential impact the baby boxes will have and the donations received to install them.&nbsp;The Children's Emergency Shelter Home donated $25,000 for the project. The Hutchinson Regional Medical Foundation donated $5,000."It's just a fresh start for the guardian, a fresh start for the baby," said Paige Allen, social worker and a board member with the Children's Emergency Shelter Home. "There's organizations you know that you know they're there. They find foster parents. They find kinship. It's just the safest option. It's a fresh start. A fresh start for a baby."Fire Chief Steven Beer said the baby boxes can legally be installed in fire and police stations after House Bill 2024 was passed at the last legislative session in Topeka. Beer said after the bill passed, he contacted McPherson Fire Department Chief T.J. Wyssman about the idea of installing the boxes in Hutchinson. Wyssman spoke at the legislative session.&nbsp;The baby must be given up in the first 60 days according to the new law.&nbsp;&nbsp;"We are not always in the fire station," Beer said. "We are training or on calls and different things so we are not always there. And unfortunately some of these children have died at the back door of fire stations so this baby box is actually tied into the 911 center and tied into the fire stations. So once the parent decides to give up this child, they put them in this baby cradle and it's in a controlled environment.
