HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In a social media post on Friday, the Hutchinson Clinic announced the death of one of its physicians.

"It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved ENT physician, Dr. Wade Gaeddert.  He has been a part of the Hutch Clinic family since 2004 and his loss is deeply felt by all of us here," the clinic said.&nbsp;"We are keeping his family, friends, and patients in our thoughts and prayers.  If you have an appointment scheduled with Dr. Gaeddert, someone from our team will be contacting you with next steps."

The circumstances of Dr. Gaeddert's death have not been released.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson economy is strong, according to an annual survey from the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce.

"We survey our Chamber members every January," said Chamber CEO Debra Teufel. "We ask them to take a look back at what sales did in the previous year, as well as what employment has done, then do they expect that to be growing? The good news is that most of the respondents said that last year was a pretty solid year. Sales actually increased, by and large. Most of them also have a pretty fair outlook for this year. There were several of the companies that responded that said they feel that this could be a year that they continue to invest in their business, whether that's in physical facilities or in new machinery and equipment."

There are still challenges ahead for local business.

"Workforce is a challenge for everyone," Teufel said. "We are not immune to it. They kind of rated their workforce based on soft skills and basic skills required for the job. Most businesses feel like they can train people for the actual technical aspects of the job, but they want folks to have soft skills when they come in. That's the reason we do some of the programs we do with the schools to prepare young people for those jobs."

Good people are as difficult to find as they have ever been in Reno County.

"We are at really historic unemployment lows," Teufel said. "That's a good thing, by one measure, but it does almost feel like we are at full employment. The most recent number from the Kansas workforce system shows we're at 2.2% unemployment, which equates to about 650 individuals that are qualifying for unemployment of some form in Reno County. That is down from, last year, we were hovering in the 3% range. To hit 2.2%, I would say is almost a historic low. We may have hit it one other time since I've been here in Reno County. When I came here in 2016, we were in the 5.5% range."

This is as low as unemployment has been since April 2022.

Chamber survey: Businesses want to grow, need people

Docent-led Cosmosphere tours continue Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann explained his vote on the impeachment of&nbsp;Alejandro Mayorkas,&nbsp;Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. He voted in favor of sending the articles over to the Senate. The vote was 214-213.

"It baffles me a little bit that it was so close," Mann said. "To me, it's an easy decision. The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the sole power of impeachment. It states that civil officers of the U.S. can be impeached for treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. When you look at Secretary Mayorkas, what's happening with the southern border, his willful decisions not to comply with our nation's immigration laws, breaching the public trust of the Congress and the American people, it's unfortunate that it's to this point. Something must be done, though."

The Senate is set to take up the impeachment trial on Feb. 26.

"Since Biden came into office, we've had 8.3 million folks come into the country illegally," Mann said. "Today, there are at least a dozen things the President could do that would not completely solve the problem, but we would see the numbers plummet."

Mann gave some examples of action the administration could take.

"The Border Patrol tells us that if the President would just reinstate remain in Mexico and also end catch and release, they think that illegal immigration would drop overnight by as much as 70%," Mann said. "That's something the President should have done two years ago and could do today."

The Remain in Mexico policy, when it was in force, required migrants seeking asylum to remain in Mexico until their US immigration court date.

Mann explains impeachment vote

HARVEY COUNTY—A Kansas man avoided injury in a small plane mishap just after 1 p.m. Thursday in Harvey County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1991 Robbins Wesley&nbsp;RV-4 Fixed Wing Aircraft piloted by Sidney O. Mead, 71, Wichita, was flying from Eisenhower Airport to Newton City County Airport when the engine failed and would not restart.

The pilot landed the aircraft in a field, on its wheels, with no damage to the aircraft and no injury.

Engine failure: Small plane forced to land in Harvey Co. field

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will approve the 2024 Residential Street Maintenance project bid at their meeting on Tuesday.

The area of the project is the portion of the city east of K-61 highway for 2024.

The City contracts for both Crack Seal and Chip Seal as part of the yearly maintenance.

Crack Seal: The first and most economical line of defense for pavement preservation is sealing the cracks to help prevent water from getting into the street. Crack sealing involves cleaning out and placing a hot applied asphalt-based sealer in the cracks.

Chip Seal: This involves spraying a thin film of heated asphalt emulsion on the road surface, followed by the placement of small aggregate (chips). The chips are then compacted into the asphalt layer and excess chips are swept from the surface over the next few days.

The total approved 2024 CIP budget for the 24-02 Residential Street Maintenance was $1,390,000.00. The crack seal portion of the project at $290,000.00 and the Residential Street Resurface budget at $1,100,000. Crack sealing involves cleaning out and placing a hot applied asphalt-based sealer in the cracks.Chip Seal: This involves spraying a thin film of heated asphalt emulsion on the road surface, followed by the placement of small aggregate (chips). The chips are then compacted into the asphalt layer and excess chips are swept from the surface over the next few days.The total approved 2024 CIP budget for the 24-02 Residential Street Maintenance was $1,390,000.00. NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting,&nbsp;the Newton City Commission approved an agreement with Polis: Cultural Planning for a historic survey of Newton’s downtown.

The consultant will survey the physical description, condition, historical significance, and changes over time to the downtown district’s 250 buildings. This will include buildings on Main Street as well as side streets between Plum and Oak in the Central Business District.

The process beginning this spring will include outreach to property owners and businesses downtown as well as public meetings to share information about the process and findings.

Downtown has two national historic districts separated by the BNSF Railway crossing that include buildings only along Main Street. This survey will provide a recommendation about possibly expanding the historic districts to include a larger area of downtown. Some building owners outside the current districts have expressed interest in exploring historic status in order to benefit from incentives such as historic tax credits for building improvements.

A Historic Preservation Fund grant from the State Historic Preservation Office will pay for $30,000 of the $33,000 contract.

Kansas Wheat Rx is a combination of suggested management practices for economical and sustainable production of high-quality winter wheat in Kansas.

Mark the calendar now for two upcoming seminars in Dodge City and Wichita. Speakers will discuss cover crops and soil health, the role of wheat in a cropping system, soil fertility, fungicides and economics of wheat production. The program will qualify for certified crop advisor (CCA) continuing credit units (CEUs).

“We cannot change the impact of weather on each year’s crop, but we can arm wheat producers with the knowledge they need to maximize profitability through utilizing the genetic potential of new varieties and best management practices,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “We’re excited to share with Kansas wheat producers what we’ve learned through the Kansas Wheat Commission’s research investments — from the importance of variety selection to the practices and tools farmers can use to improve quality.”

The mass shooting that unfolded amid throngs of people at the Kansas City Chiefs’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-chiefs-dynasty-kansas-city-d16a308684d97a6be2d269c8d56404be" target="_blank">Super Bowl celebration</a>, killing one person and wounding almost two dozen others, appeared to stem from a dispute between several people, authorities said Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police Chief Stacey Graves said the 22 people injured Wednesday ranged between 8 and 47 years old, with half under 16. A mother of two was killed.

Police said they detained three people from the shooting but released one person they determined wasn’t involved, leaving two juveniles in custody. No charges have been filed. Police are looking for others who may have been involved and are calling for witnesses, people with cellphone footage and victims of the violence to call a dedicated hotline.

“We are working to determine the involvement of others. And it should be noted we have recovered several firearms. This incident is still a very active investigation,” Graves said at a news conference.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-kansas-city-c373ac902961ded32bccc11c67afbd37" target="_blank">The shooting</a>&nbsp;outside Union Station occurred despite the presence of more than 800 police officers who were in the building and area, including on top of nearby structures, said Mayor Quinton Lucas, who attended with his wife and mother and ran for safety when the shots were fired. But he doesn’t expect to cancel the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade.

“We have parades all the time. I don’t think they’ll end. Certainly we recognized the public safety challenges and issues that relate to them,” Lucas said.

Wednesday’s celebration was the third such parade in four years, and the others had no violence.

People packed the parade route, with fans climbing trees and street poles for a better view. Players rolled through on double-decker buses as DJs and drummers heralded their arrival.

The police chief said 1 million people likely attended the parade, which occurred in a city of about 470,000 people and a metropolitan area of about 2 million, but stressed that the violence was wrought by just a handful of people.

“The law enforcement response was exemplary. Those in attendance also responded,” Graves added.

Among them was Trey Filter, who was walking to the car with his family when he heard yells of “get him.”

Filter, 40, saw a fleeing man, prompting him and another bystander to try to tackle him. Filter eventually jumped on top of the man.

“I don’t know what the hell I was thinking,” the owner of an asphalt and concrete company recalled. “We was like, ‘We got him.’ I’ll always remember that. And then they started screaming, ‘There’s a gun!’”

The men looked for it, realizing it had been knocked loose. The gun had fallen near Filter’s wife, Casey Filter, who picked it up. At that point, the man who fled was under a dogpile about 10 feet (3 meters) away.

Trey Filter, who lives outside Wichita, was still processing the melee Thursday. But he was glad there wasn’t more carnage.

“I’m sure there were a thousand other men there that would have done it,” he said.

Police didn’t identify Filter as a man who intervened or specifically say whether the man he tackled was a suspect.

Meanwhile, police are still asking witnesses to come forward with information. Many described a sense of confusion that rippled through the crowd.

The rally had just ended and music was still blaring when the shots erupted. Many people initially thought they were hearing fireworks. But then chaos ensued. Some in the crowd hit the ground while others leapt over barriers and sprinted, some carrying children in their arms.

he crowd was so massive that normalcy returned quickly, with some fans unsure what had happened. But then ambulances arrived and officers rushed in with guns drawn. Some of the less seriously injured were driven away on golf carts.

The stunned crowd — some in tears — slowly gathered their belongings, trying to figure out how to get home. Strangers comforted each other as police put up crime scene tape in an area where moments earlier there had been a joyous celebration.

Hank Hunter, a sophomore at a Kansas high school, said he heard shots in the distance while watching the rally with a friend. Initially, they didn’t know what it was, but then “like a chain reaction” people started hitting the ground.

They ran to jump over a barricade and his friend slammed his head into the concrete, Hunter said. A security guard ushered his friend into Union Station, which was closed to the general public, as the players and coaches prepared to leave on buses. There, coach Andy Reid consoled his friend and “just tried to comfort him and calm him down.”

Social media users posted shocking video of police running through Wednesday’s crowded scene. One video showed someone apparently performing chest compressions on a victim as another person, seemingly writhing in pain, lay on the ground nearby. People screamed in the background.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-parade-shooting-dj-victim-d96b8631a92af6682b77577c2c4e98c8" target="_blank">woman killed in the shooting</a>&nbsp;was identified by radio station KKFI-FM as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, host of “Taste of Tejano.”

Lopez-Galvan, whose DJ name was “Lisa G,” was an extrovert and devoted mother from a prominent Latino family in the area, said Rosa Izurieta and Martha Ramirez, two childhood friends who worked with her at a staffing company.

“She’s the type of person who would jump in front of a bullet for anybody — that would be Lisa,” Izurieta said.

Kansas City has long struggled with gun violence, and in 2020 it was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/in-state-wire-tn-state-wire-mo-state-wire-politics-oh-state-wire-0950ff59635979d7d2d2d3479f4d9c58" target="_blank">among nine cities</a>&nbsp;targeted by the U.S. Justice Department in an effort to crack down on violent crime. In 2023, the city matched a record with 182 homicides, most of which involved guns.

Lucas has joined with mayors across the country in calling for new laws to reduce gun violence, including mandating universal background checks.

Meanwhile, University Health Truman Medical Center reported that three people with gunshot wounds were still being treated there Thursday, including two in critical condition. One is a man who survived only because staff got him to the operating room within five minutes of arrival, Dr. Dustin Neel said.

St. Luke’s Hospital spokesperson Emily Hohenberg said one gunshot victim remains in critical condition there.

Children’s Mercy Kansas City said three children remain there. It had received 11 children between the ages of 6 and 15, nine of whom suffered gunshot wounds. All were expected to recover.

Stephanie Meyer, the hospital’s chief nursing officer, said at a Thursday news conference that the kids are scared and will need mental health support. The hospital’s staff members are also struggling.

“They’re struggling just like you and I are, and unbelievably heartbroken that this has happened in our backyard,” said Dr. Stephanie Burrus, the hospital’s chief wellbeing officer. “And we all train for this, we’re all prepared to take care of these children. But it doesn’t negate the fact that it’s still not normal for people to see many, many people wounded by gunshots.”

Handbook available for wildfire prep

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Vixen pop-up bar had over 100 people attend its Christmas event. A take two is underway for Thursday night, Feb. 15 and Friday, Feb. 16 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. It's called The Vixen's Valentine Soirée.&nbsp;

The Vixen is hosted by Ashley Scarborough, owner of AS Designed Co. and KT Gates owner of New Inspiration Media. Scarborough said there will be a few changes from the Vixen's Christmas themed pop-up bar.&nbsp;

"This time we have the Whiskey Wagon coming to be a full-bar so instead of just canned drinks we will have a full bar selection and we also have a game to play during the event so every two-hours we are doing a big drawing giveaway," Scarborough said. "So if you buy these necklaces for a dollar we will do a heads up game and then we are giving away prizes worth over a $100 in gift cards."&nbsp;

Scarborough said she and Gates received a lot of positive feedback from the community about The Vixen during the holidays so they went ahead and planned again for another event around the next big holiday.&nbsp;

"We've already had a lot of people you know say that they are happy to have something new to do in town," Scarborough said. "Just get people out for the evening. Especially with Valentine's Day being on a Wednesday. We thought we would give couples another opportunity to do something special on Thursday or Friday maybe when they have more time after work."&nbsp;

Scarborough said there may be plans to have The Vixen open for St. Patrick's Day but nothing is official yet.&nbsp;

The admission price for the event is $25 per person. The price also includes two drinks and four photo booth opportunities and other display options in the event space for photos.&nbsp;

The Vixen is a 21 and over event and each adult must bring a valid ID. The Vixen is located at 4 S. Main St.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The VITA tax site at the Salvation Army at 700 North Walnut in Hutchinson remains open and will be open through April 11.&nbsp; VITA is funded in part, thanks to United Way of Reno County donations.

"We're open on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.," said Leah Chandler with the Volunteer Center.&nbsp; "We'll be open this Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m."

IRS certified volunteers will prepare taxes for FREE for households with a combined 2023 income of $64,000 or less.

"Actually, it's based on the Earned Income Credit, the top Earned Income Credit that's available," said Sue Wegerle, who works at the VITA site.

Bring proof of identification , a driver’s license, state photo ID or other government issued identification that includes a photo and Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents.

Also, put birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return

Bring wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers

Social Security Benefit Statements (SSA-1099), if applicable

Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)

Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received

A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available

Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check

To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms

Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number

Also include forms 1095-A, B and C, Health Coverage Statements

"Last year, I think we prepared around 1500 returns," Wegerle said. "Of those 1500, only about 3 were able to itemize federally. The thing of it is though, the state will allow you to itemize separate from the federal and their standard deduction is much lower."

Specifically, 1,610 returns were done last year, resulting in federal Reno County refunds of&nbsp;$1,080,104.

If you don't have time to wait to have your taxes done in person, you can drop them off to be done during the time when volunteer preparers are between clients.

Even though the architecture might look like a church, this building started life as a filling station.

Cities Services Oil Co. was there from 1935 to 1939.

The first photo shows this enterprise in 1949.<figure>

(Real Estate and Investment Brokers) was started in 1959 by a group of local businessmen.In 1970, Joe Gingerich and his two sons, Ron and Doc, purchased the company and moved it to the 201 E. 2nd building in 1975. The second photo shows the building and property today, still the R.E.I.B. business.<figure>
