Join the Hutchinson Public Library at Dillon Nature Center for a calm morning nature walk and poetry reading from the Humanities Kansas Wild Words Poetry book.

Hutchinson Public Library has partnered with Humanities Kansas to distribute free copies of the Wild Words poetry book to the community. This book features 22 poems inspired by Kansas native plants and flowers with artwork by Melissa Dehner.

The group will meet at the Visitor Center inside Dillon Nature Center and begin the poetry walk Thursday, Sept. 7 at 10:00 a.m. There will be a few stops for a poetry reading from the Wild Words book and conversation about the Kansas landscape. 

Staff from both Dillon Nature Center and the Hutchinson Public Library will be available with information about Kansas Wildlife found at Dillon Nature Center and answers to questions to spark conversation.

The best part is that each person who registers will receive a free copy of the Wild Words poetry books to keep.

Registration is required and space is limited.

Wildflower Poetry Walk at Dillon Nature Center is less than two weeks away

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dan Murray with NFIB-Kansas said a survey conducted last month shows concern about being able to access credit among their membership.

"The day to day operations of our small business owners rely on the financial system," Murray said. "Clearly, many of our Kansas job creators are struggling against the inflation that's ongoing and the labor problems that we've seen, but now rising interest rates are presenting yet another challenge to our small business owners. That hits them in the pocketbook when they go to borrow money for the operations of their business."

It's not that institutions are saying no, the terms just aren't as favorable.

"Of the small business owners who were seeking lending, over half, 58% who borrowed or tried to borrow reported higher interest rates as their largest complaint in accessing financing. I think they are still able to access financing, but nearly 60% are complaining that this is creating a problem for access."

Small business owners are sticking with their hometown banks at this point.

"Ninety-seven percent of the owners have not changed their primary financial institution that they have used in the last three months," Murray said. "As it relates to banking location and size, I thought this was interesting, 42% of small business owners visit their bank in person once or more a week."

Small business owners are relatively optimistic about their businesses, too. Twenty-six percent of owners reported the current financial state of their business as excellent, 45% reported good and another 25% reported okay. Only 5% said poor.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mimi Meredith with Cosmosphere let us know what the plan is to continue physical work on the space museum.

"We have received some great grant funds this year," Meredith said. "That will allow us to begin planning for expanding the space in the Hall of Space. We'll continue the remodel, which visitors who have come recently can see the galleries that have already been remodeled and note the distinct difference. It's absolutely beautiful and fresh and light, easy to navigate and easy to learn in the new galleries."

The remodel will include an additional classroom.

"The Rocket Lab will be a space that can accommodate another group of 25 to 30 students, as well as be available to visitors to the museum to learn about rocketry and science."

Local contractors are already working on a very basic need for Cosmosphere.

"We are always grateful for all of the support we have locally," Meredith said. "It's amazing. We did get $3 million in a Congressionally designated spending allocation through Senator Moran. That will become available November 1. That was a wonderful lift. Additionally, we got $700,000 in a grant through the state Department of Commerce SPRINT grant. That is available now. We are grateful. Those of you who have driven by and seen what's happening on our roof, that is all made possible through some of these grant funds. It was always exciting when we were dodging buckets in our education area, as the roof had not been addressed for more than two decades. It's a flat roof."

That's getting fixed first, so that the work inside can be preserved and the new construction can happen after the federal money is available.

Cosmosphere has grants to continue work

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dr. John Walker with Central Christian School said students are in the new classrooms that were finished as part of the school's FORWARD initiative.

"By God's grace, we sought to pursue donors and friends of the school who would help us complete that project," Walker said. "By God's grace, we are there. We have a brand new science lab, a brand new technology lab, we've got basically all of our high school and secondary students consolidated into a wing of the school. It's a huge blessing. It looks really, really nice, really cool. We have a lot of alumni coming back who are quite jealous of the condition of those classrooms. We are beyond blessed at this point in time."

It's amazing to think of how much technology has changed since the rooms were contemplated and how much more the school is able to do with the space they have than might have been the case had there not been a pause in the work.

"Scripture reminds us to wait upon the Lord and that our hope can be in Him," Walker said. "I think we've had faithful men and women who have prayed for this day for over 20 years. That's one thing that I tried to recognize at our ribbon cutting ceremony was the faithful men and women who have been praying for this day for years and years and years. They didn't grow weary of praying for this day to happen. They stayed faithful to pray and ask the Lord for help and by God's grace we are where we are. We've got amazing teachers, we've got amazing students. We've got amazing families and really nice spaces to continue to educate, equip and edify our students to exalt Jesus Christ."

With the new rooms, it will allow the school to expand their mission to additional families.

"We definitely have room to grow," Walker said. "I think we've got space to grow into and the Lord has been kind to continue to provide for the school, whether that's through enrollment or through people who care about the school and want to financially support the school. Certainly, we're seeking more partners along those lines, people who want a Biblical worldview education, parents who want that type of education, as well as friends of the school who want to support that mission."

Central Christian has students in new classrooms this fall

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jason Probst with Circles of Reno County is clear that the Circle Leaders who are getting ready to start their journey out of poverty on Aug. 31 need to learn how to navigate long-term planning as they get out of a get through the day mindset.

"We're not trying to solve an immediate problem, we're not trying to solve a crisis," Probst said. "What we are trying to do is to help people learn some of these hidden rules about navigating middle class life. One of the things we know from our work in Circles and from research that's been done around the country, is that there are different rules for different socioeconomic levels. People in poverty have a group of rules that they follow to navigate that life. As we move from poverty to middle class, there's an entirely different set of rules that sometimes seems very foreign and very unfamiliar to people who haven't experienced that before. We try to connect people and build a community around people who are ready to make the journey from poverty to middle class in stability."

Navigating things like education after high school is also a challenge.

"I came from a family where neither of my parents graduated from high school," Probst said. "College was not even a thought. To sit down with them and have them help me go through a financial aid form for college, was beyond the realm of possibility. That's a reality for a lot of people."

These Circle Leaders need allies who can help them without telling them what they should or should not do, but letting them know what all the options in front of them are.

"I heard a really good analogy the other day about people who have to survive in life," Probst said. "It's kind of like, if you have eyeglasses that you can look through, most people don't have cracks in their glasses. They can see clearly through that way. People who have to survive all the time, or don't have some of those middle class experiences, such as parents who can sit down and help them with college, they have to see the world through these sort of cracked lenses."

It will take time and resources to create transformational change in the community, but as each Circle Leader gets stable, they are able to change the trajectory of their family for generations to come.&nbsp;

Circles ready to start new group on growth journey

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Come paint at the Hutchinson Public Library from 5:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5. In the Pocket Paintings program, you will learn the delicate art of mini paintings. You can create tiny works of art that fit in the palm of your hand.

An experienced artist will guide you through the process of working with tiny brushes and canvases to create amazing works of art and beautiful color blends. You will have the opportunity to experiment with different techniques and styles, with the guidance and advice of the art instructor.

All materials will be provided including mini canvases, paints, and brushes. This class is suitable for adults and teens age 13 and up. Beginners and experienced painters are welcome. Participating in Pocket Paintings at the library is a great way to explore your creativity and learn a new skill in a relaxing and supportive environment.

At the end of the program you will have a beautiful miniature masterpiece to take home right away or display at the library, as well as the knowledge and confidence to continue making and enjoying art on your own.

Pocket Paintings coming up Sept. 5

MCPHERSON COUNTY—A Kansas pilot had a mishap with his aircraft just before noon Saturday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1941&nbsp; Piper&nbsp;Fixed-Wing Single Engine Aircraft piloted by&nbsp; Justin T.&nbsp; Coletti, 33, Salina, lost a piece of his door off of the plane.

The aircraft was circling around to locate but landed in a field&nbsp;500 yards East of 25th Avenue and Arapaho Road southeast of Moundridge.

The pilot aborted the takeoff because there was not enough distance for a safe takeoff and landed again.&nbsp; While the plane was rolling, the pilot had a hard brake when coming to a stop, nosed into the ground and put a slight dent in the propeller blades. There were no injuries.

Kansas pilot avoids injury after small plane mishap

RENO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6:30 p.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023&nbsp;Mercedes-Benz EQB Class driven by Clinton F. Pierce, 87, Hutchinson, was northbound on Whiteside Road at U.S. 50.

The SUV pulled into the intersection, where it collided with a 2012 Ford F350 driven by Paul C.&nbsp;Sundby, 53, Hudson, Wisconsin.

After impact the pickup entered the median and rolled onto its top. EMS transported Pierce to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Sundby was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Hutchinson man hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — United Way Community Work Day is an opportunity for the community to come together in groups large and small to volunteer and do hands on projects for local non-profits and seniors that need assistance. The United Way has over 550 volunteers helping with 30 projects throughout Reno County this year. The volunteers give up a Saturday to really make an impact. They will paint houses for Brush Up Hutch, clean up Carey Park, work at the Boys and Girls Club, Hadley Day Care Center, City of South Hutch and Sylvia to name a few.

The Community Work Day will start with the annual breakfast at DCI park at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday August 26th. The volunteers will then start at their project site by 8:15 in the morning. This diverse group of volunteers will take a leadership role in our community by committing both time and talent to help extend the capacity of our nonprofits here in Reno County.

The Community Work Day precedes United Way of Reno County’s kick off of the annual fundraising campaign which will officially kick off September 1st. This year the goal is to help raise $1,250,000 for local nonprofits. 

The need in the community is greater than ever before. It is time to come together and take a stand for what matters most. MCPHERSON, Kan. —  Bluestem PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) has announced leadership transitions that will position the organization to best support current operations and future endeavors.

Bluestem PACE is a program of Bluestem Communities that supports individuals age 55 and better who have complex medical needs to remain living in their own home by coordinating comprehensive care. With a primary location in McPherson, Kan., and an alternative care site in Hutchinson, Kan., Bluestem PACE serves seniors in a six-county region of McPherson, Reno, Harvey, Marion, Rice and Saline counties.

Emilie Rains has been named Bluestem PACE Executive Director. Rains has served with Bluestem PACE since 2016 as Director of Marketing and Intake, and as Interim Executive Director for a month prior to stepping into the full-time role.

“Emilie’s knowledge of day-to-day operations and regulatory requirements, along with incredible familiarity and communication with key stakeholders in the community is key,” said James Krehbiel, president and CEO of Bluestem Communities. “We look forward to the leadership she will provide to PACE, as well as her participation on the Bluestem Communities Executive Team. She is unmatched across the national PACE landscape, and we are honored to have her in leadership at Bluestem Communities.”

Rains has been instrumental in the success and growth of Bluestem PACE since the program’s launch in 2016. She has spent time educating seniors, caregivers, health care partners and the wider community to the services and benefits the program provides, coordinated intake of new participants and built important connections with participants and partners.

Justin Loewen, former Bluestem PACE Executive Director, has stepped into the role of Vice President of PACE Strategy and Development. Loewen has served at Bluestem PACE since October 2016.

“Bluestem Communities continues to actively pursue ways to serve seniors in Kansas and beyond,” said Krehbiel. “Justin comes to this position with a wealth of knowledge and experience in extending the PACE model of care.”

In his new role, Loewen will be responsible for discovering and evaluating opportunities for potential growth for Bluestem PACE. He helped lead the program through an expansion in 2021 when Bluestem PACE added an alternative care site in Hutchinson, Kan.

“Bluestem PACE has provided excellent care and services for seniors who live at home for more than seven years,” said Krehbiel. “We are honored to continue to fulfill the mission of Bluestem Communities under this new leadership model.”

Bluestem Communities other locations are the life plan communities of Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton and Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — AAA Kansas reminds motorists that high temperatures can take their toll not only on people and  animals but also vehicles.

"AAA receives more emergency roadside service calls for help from members in the summer," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Last summer, in Kansas alone, AAA responded to more than 29,000 requests for assistance. About 51% of those calls involved some sort of engine breakdown requiring the vehicle to be towed."

Nineteen percent of the calls were battery related, and 13% involved tire troubles.

"You hear a lot about dead batteries in the extreme cold," Steward said. "Heat can zap the life of batteries just as much. That can manifest itself into dead batteries in the middle of summer, too. Especially if your battery is more than three years old, get it in and get it tested by a trained technician."

Vehicle engines work extra hard in the summer, and it is the cooling system’s job to protect the engine from overheating.

"Just like people need fluids in the extreme heat, it's important for your vehicles, as well," Steward said. "Those fluids lubricate, but they also serve as coolants, by helping carry heat away from critical components."

Inspect hoses and drive belts for cracking, soft spots or other signs of poor condition. Worn parts are more susceptible to failure in hot conditions and should be replaced.

Hutchinson Art Center Summer Consignment Art Auction Aug. 26

MANHATTAN, Kansas — The Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health has received notification of multiple confirmed cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses across the state over the past few weeks. Confirmed cases have been reported in Barber, Butler, Douglas and Pratt counties.

WNV is a preventable disease, with annual vaccinations that have proven highly effective. All of the confirmed cases of WNV in Kansas were in unvaccinated horses or horses with an unknown vaccination history so were assumed to be unvaccinated. All horse owners should consult with their local veterinarians and make a vaccination plan for their horses.

WNV is a virus that can infect humans, horses, birds and other species. Horses infected with WNV can have symptoms that range from depression, loss of appetite and fever to severe neurologic signs such as incoordination, weakness, inability to rise, and hypersensitivity to touch or sound. WNV can be fatal in horses. If you see symptoms of WNV in your horse, contact your veterinarian immediately.

The virus is carried and transmitted by mosquitoes; it is not directly contagious from horse to horse or from horse to human. WNV is a reportable disease in Kansas, which means veterinarians are required by law to report any confirmed cases to the State Veterinarian.

Confirmed cases have been reported in Barber, Butler, Douglas and Pratt counties.WNV is a preventable disease, with annual vaccinations that have proven highly effective. All of the confirmed cases of WNV in Kansas were in unvaccinated horses or horses with an unknown vaccination history so were assumed to be unvaccinated. All horse owners should consult with their local veterinarians and make a vaccination plan for their horses.WNV is a virus that can infect humans, horses, birds and other species. Horses infected with WNV can have symptoms that range from depression, loss of appetite and fever to severe neurologic signs such as incoordination, weakness, inability to rise, and hypersensitivity to touch or sound. Kan. — Yoder Heritage Day is back on Saturday.

"It's kind of a big family reunion for the Yoder area," said Mervin Fisher with the committee. "We bring people in from all over the U.S. We've had people there from as far as Great Britain."

The events throughout the day let animals from the area shine.

"Here, you don't see very many people farming with horses anymore, but there's a lot of areas in the U.S. where the Amish folks still do farm with horses," Fisher said. "We showcase that with the draft horse plowing in the morning and with horse events all throughout the day."

The event is free to get in and all events are free.

"That's due to our great sponsors," Fisher said. "There's way too many to mention, but they make it so we can run this day for free for those that want to attend and enjoy it."

Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

The evening will feature cold drinks, a bratwurst meal and live entertainment. For every sale of beer, $1 will be donated to the Bluestem PACE Good Neighbor Fund. For the bratwurst meal, there is a suggested donation of $8, the proceeds of which will also benefit the Good Neighbor Fund.

Hutch Brewfest ticket discount deadline coming up

Volunteer wheat is certain to be a significant issue in the upcoming growing season, thanks to the late rains that delayed harvest progress and the high rate of abandoned fields. Hidden among the spotty stands of volunteer wheat is a safe harbor for wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) and other diseases to ride out the winter months. Growers should actively manage their volunteer wheat early and often to head off this threat to next year’s harvest.&nbsp;

“We remind Kansas wheat farmers to take necessary steps to control volunteer wheat,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations. “WSMV isn’t treatable, but it is preventable. By controlling volunteer wheat before planting begins and selecting varieties with built-in resistance, producers can help protect their future yields.”&nbsp;

The best way to WSMV is to control volunteer wheat early and often, according to a K-State Agronomy eUpdate from August 17. Stands of volunteer wheat provide a “green bridge” that allows the wheat curl mites that transmit WSMV to survive. This includes spots of volunteer wheat that emerge in double-cropped soybeans or cover crops as well as grassy weed species like barnyardgrass or foxtails that can serve as a disease reservoir.&nbsp;

After wheat harvest, Kansas producers often wait to apply herbicides with products like glyphosate or atrazine until sufficient volunteer wheat has emerged. However, another application or tillage is needed before planting to ensure the destruction of the “green bridge” created by volunteer wheat or other host plants. This is especially true during wet weather in the late summer months, which facilitates multiple flushes of volunteer wheat and other grassy weeds. K-State encourages wheat producers to terminate volunteer wheat at least two weeks prior to planting to allow enough time to kill all the wheat curl mites present in a field.&nbsp;

Producers also have the option to select varieties developed with built-in genetic resistance to WSMV, in most cases thanks to a gene called WSM2. K-State cautioned producers that these varieties are not a sole-source solution as they do have limitations, including missing resistance to other diseases spread by wheat curl mites — like triticum mosaic or wheat mosaic virus. The genetic resistance is also temperature sensitive, making the built-in shield less effective at hotter temperatures, especially if wheat is planted early for grazing or if high temperatures continue into October.&nbsp;

As an alternative, producers could also select varieties that have genetic resistance to the disease transmission agent — the wheat curl mite. The resistance to the vector means they are still susceptible to disease, but they help slow down the development of mite populations.&nbsp;

This genetic resistance is helpful, but their protection is more effective when used in combination with strategies to control volunteer wheat. By doing so this summer and early fall, producers can help stop the spread of WSMV and other viruses and reduce a substantial limiting factor to next year’s harvest.&nbsp;

 </figure>JULIA DEBES Kansas WheatVolunteer wheat is certain to be a significant issue in the upcoming growing season, thanks to the late rains that delayed harvest progress and the high rate of abandoned fields. Hidden among the spotty stands of volunteer wheat is a safe harbor for wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) and other diseases to ride out the winter months. Growers should actively manage their volunteer wheat early and often to head off this threat to next year’s harvest.&nbsp;“We remind Kansas wheat farmers to take necessary steps to control volunteer wheat,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations. “WSMV isn’t treatable, but it is preventable. By controlling volunteer wheat before planting begins and selecting varieties with built-in resistance, producers can help protect their future yields.”&nbsp;The best way to WSMV is to control volunteer wheat early and often, according to a K-State Agronomy eUpdate from August 17. Stands of volunteer wheat provide a “green bridge” that allows the wheat curl mites that transmit WSMV to survive. This includes spots of volunteer wheat that emerge in double-cropped soybeans or cover crops as well as grassy weed species like barnyardgrass or foxtails that can serve as a disease reservoir.&nbsp;After wheat harvest, Kansas producers often wait to apply herbicides with products like glyphosate or atrazine until sufficient volunteer wheat has emerged. However, another application or tillage is needed before planting to ensure the destruction of the “green bridge” created by volunteer wheat or other host plants. This is especially true during wet weather in the late summer months, which facilitates multiple flushes of volunteer wheat and other grassy weeds. K-State encourages wheat producers to terminate volunteer wheat at least two weeks prior to planting to allow enough time to kill all the wheat curl mites present in a field.&nbsp;Producers also have the option to select varieties developed with built-in genetic resistance to WSMV, in most cases thanks to a gene called WSM2. K-State cautioned producers that these varieties are not a sole-source solution as they do have limitations, including missing resistance to other diseases spread by wheat curl mites — like triticum mosaic or wheat mosaic virus. The genetic resistance is also temperature sensitive, making the built-in shield less effective at hotter temperatures, especially if wheat is planted early for grazing or if high temperatures continue into October.&nbsp;As an alternative, producers could also select varieties that have genetic resistance to the disease transmission agent — the wheat curl mite. The resistance to the vector means they are still susceptible to disease, but they help slow down the development of mite populations.&nbsp;This genetic resistance is helpful, but their protection is more effective when used in combination with strategies to control volunteer wheat. MCPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson College’s 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Cabriolet secured second in class at the 72nd&nbsp;Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance—the first time in the history of the show a car restored by students landed a podium spot. The vintage car, restored by the college’s Automotive Restoration program students, won Second in Class for the Postwar Luxury category. The victory marks the first time in Concours history that a student-restored car has ranked in the top three in any class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This year’s Concours featured 216 vehicles from 18 countries and 30 states, with just a tiny percentage of entrants winning special recognition.

“Many car collectors dream of just competing at Pebble Beach their entire lives, so for our students to earn second in class is truly an exceptional achievement,” said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. “This is 10 years in the making, with students, alumni, and faculty pouring their heart and soul into this restoration project of the Mercedes-Benz to make this vision a reality. This accomplishment puts our students on par with the professionals of automotive restoration. As an alumnus and president, I could not be prouder of everyone who had a hand in this historic day for McPherson College. Today is a great day to be a Bulldog.”

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the oldest Concours in the United States and is widely considered the most prestigious car show in the world. Thousands of applicants vie for a spot at the Concours, where automotive aficionados, industry professionals, collectors, and other enthusiasts converge every year to see the best of the best in classic cars. This year that included the students at McPherson College.

“Congratulations&nbsp;to these Kansas students and their outstanding accomplishment for placing second in class and making history as the first student-restored car to place in the top three at Pebble Beach,” said U.S. Senator Jerry Moran on social media. Moran is the senior senator from Kansas.

“It was heartening to see McPherson students, many of whom were recipients of our Phil Hill Scholarships, competing on our show field with a car they had researched and restored themselves,” said Concours d’Elegance Chairman Sandra Button. “Their efforts were truly deserving of being showcased here, as evidenced by the Mercedes placing Second in Class. Their knowledge, their abilities, and their dedication to perfecting even the smallest details of a challenging restoration project provide me with great hope for the future of classic cars.”
