MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Police Department is investigating an aggravated battery case involving a local college student that occurred early Friday morning.

At 3:56 a.m., McPherson County Emergency Communications/911 received report of a possible vehicle rollover on 56 Hwy, near 19th Avenue in McPherson County. McPherson County Sheriff’s Deputies responded and found a vehicle off the roadway. 

The driver of the vehicle an 18-year-old male college student in McPherson, was also found in the area. The male had injuries, which he said were caused by an unknown person. No one else was found in the area at that time. McPherson Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the male to McPherson Center for Care and he was later flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment. The male is in critical condition. The extent of his injuries is unknown. 

Further investigation continues by the McPherson Police Department, who has requested assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

College student critically injured, found near McPherson Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Comedian Byron Kennedy is opening Sunday night for Rob Schneider at the Kansas State Fair. His career was in the radio and records industry before leaving there to become a stand up comic.

"It's funny, because when I went into radio originally, that's what I wanted to do," Kennedy said. "I wanted to entertain people. I always dreamed of being a stand up comic, but I didn't have the courage, to be honest with you. It seemed terrifying to me. I couldn't think of anything scarier than stand up comedy. On the radio just felt a little safer to me. On the radio, you don't see the audience. In your mind, they're always laughing. You're always killing it."

The process of getting material that works is a grind.

"To get the consistency, you just have to do it," Kennedy said. "You just have to get on stage, get on stage, get on stage. You have to fail many, many, many times. You have to be willing to fail many times. When I first started doing Las Vegas, it's the hardest city in America to do comedy and it will beat you up and it will make you question your sanity and it will make you want to quit, especially, when you start breaking into the Vegas scene, you're going to be doing midnight shows. You're going to be up there opening for drunk crowds that really don't care what you have to say, and you just have to figure it out."

Kennedy said his style is just to tell people what he's experienced.

"I don't know, I seem to have a lot of crazy things happen to me all the time," Kennedy said. "You tell those stories in an interesting, fun way that hopefully resonates. The State Fair show is definitely going to be a little different than the Las Vegas show. It will be a lot more family-friendly."

Kennedy: Comedy 'seemed terrifying', but now it's talking about life

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the 2023 Kansas State Fair opening Friday, General Manager Bryan Schulz was on the KWBW morning show live from the Fairgrounds and noted some of the improvements made for this year's Fair, including the walking surface in much of the grounds.&nbsp;

"Right now, we spent close to a million dollars, it will be closer to $2 million when we get done. The legislature a couple of years ago, gave us some monies to start upgrading, one of them was for asphalt and we have put down a lot of asphalt on these grounds."

There is also a new integrated PA system that is the largest by area covered in the state.

"That was another part of the monies that we got from the legislature," Schulz said. "When I started, it was, okay, how do we tell people, we're in tornado alley, how do we tell people that there could be imminent weather? How do we tell people that we've got a lost child? How do we tell people you've triple parked, please move your car. We worked with Hopp's Sound out of McPherson and the sound system that we have is absolutely phenomenal. We've been able to create 19 different emergency announcements by the push of a button, both in English and Spanish. That can tell people that we've got a storm coming, but then we're also able to play a little bit of background music and be able to talk to people as they are coming and going."

The hope is that the fair can get back to the pre-COVID attendance numbers they had a few years back.

"We're hoping to get to 350,000, absolutely," Schulz said. "That's kind of the average we had prior to COVID. We're hoping to gain back up into that."

The Kansas State Fair is Sept. 8 to 17 in Hutchinson.

Improvements to Fair include asphalt, PA system

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Now that the permanent hire of a police chief is behind them, the Hutchinson City Council will begin narrowing the field for a permanent City Manager hire.

"We've narrowed it down to 12 out of the over 40 applicants," said Mayor Jon Richardson. "The next step, over the next week or two, is for council members to narrow that down to three to four to invite for in person interviews."

Those interviews would likely happen late this month or early next month, but given the amount of notice a currently working City Manager would need to give to their employer, it could be the first of the year before a permanent hire is in place and working.

Permanent city manager process continuing forward

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Phil Nightingale with Mel Hambleton Ford addressed the Kansas State Fair Board at their organizational meeting on Thursday to ask them if he could be allowed to put together a proposal to run races at the half mile oval at the fairgrounds.

"I understand, the fair's got to make money,"&nbsp;Nightingale said. "I think there's a way to make money with a racetrack. I think that there's been a lot of things that hasn't worked well for the fair. I think there's ways that we can go about it. I've got a lot of people that have talked to me about trying to promote the track, sponsor the track, sell different things. To run once or twice a year, I get it. That doesn't make it work. Having all that ground setting there empty all the time. I get that doesn't make it work, but can we come to some kind of a compromise to where you guys can have your events there too, while we still have racing?"

Nightingale has spoken to a sanctioning body about his interest in running at the Fairgrounds.

"I did talk to the head person of IMCA last night at the track, while I was up there at Boone, Iowa. I told him what I was looking at and stuff like that. He's excited. He wants me to meet back with him when I get back there this afternoon."

Tentatively, Nightingale would like to run one race a month April to October, starting with IMCA to get things going. 

James Fisher with the Fairgrounds Foundation, who was also there to present on a separate topic, brought up the elephant in the room regarding using the racetrack more often.

"Expo I is our most rented facility on the grounds for horse shows 40 to 45 weekends a year," Fisher said. "Horse shows will not come in if they are doing races on the same weekend, because they can't. Neither will the other venues down there on that side of the track. That consideration is something the board will have to look at, as well."

The board also was sent a letter with some proposals from C. Ray Hall, who has promoted the Hutchinson Nationals and Fairgrounds events since 1975. Hall's proposals did not seem like something the board was as likely to consider, because of the agreement regarding race promotion Hall has after selling 81 Speedway in Park City in 2019.

Ultimately, the board is going to take the subject back up at its meeting on Thursday. They seem to be leaning in the direction of at least allowing Nightingale the time to put together a formal proposal, which he believes he can get done by the fair board's November meeting.&nbsp;

State Fair manager Bryan Schulz believes it would be a considerable cost to get the track in shape to race a monthly schedule.

"How much money are you willing to put into that track?" asked Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz. "In talking to the gentleman at 81 Speedway, to redo his walls, to redo his lighting, was about $3.5 million. I'll just put this out on the table, $3.5 million could go a long ways on the grounds, not knowing what the future is of that track. We could go two years of going eight nights for the year. Then all of a sudden it could go where we're not making money, we know we're not making money and they're not going to make money. Then, you've invested $3.5 million and you've got an air handling unit on Meadowlark that needs to be changed out or you need electrical upgrades in the RV park or something like that. Those are considerations that we definitely have to look into. I am open to listening to all this, but remember, when this is happening, we need to make sure that there is some financial commitment, long term."

It would seem that Nightingale would have to come up with something remarkable to get the fair board and management to change their mind, but it looks, as of today, like he will get that chance.

Nightingale to put together racing proposal

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College is in the process of updating its main campus. Much of that work happened this summer.

Updates to HCC's main campus include a renovated foyer area by the student center, additional sidewalk space for water drainage and a space called the "green area" in the middle of campus. Once a donor is named, the green area will be renamed.&nbsp;

"We think it's going to add to the overall aesthetics of the community," said HutchCC President Dr. Carter File. "We hope it gives community members more space. We are a community college and the college is owned by the community. We want them to utilize that space."&nbsp;

So far, Prairie Landworks Inc. has constructed an outdoor amphitheater between Lockman Hall and Speare Hall and Gowans Stadium. Artificial greens will be laid out around the amphitheater and in front of it.&nbsp;

Four tennis courts with a surrounding fence were taken down to make room for two pickleball courts. A walkway was also constructed to make room for food trucks, flower beds and additional lighting.&nbsp;

File said the green space can be used by anyone in the community for events or leisure activities. He said the lighted walkway will help address campus safety.

&nbsp; "Not that we have a problem with safety, but from time to time there's a concern that our campus didn't have enough light and now this path is going to be lit from dark until dawn," File said.&nbsp;

Off campus updates and upcoming projects include additional space added to the Peel Center for nursing training and simulation space. The cosmetology school also has plans to add extra space for a barber school in the coming year.&nbsp;

HutchCC updating campus as offerings expand

Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System announced on Thursday that the newest DAISY Award winner is more than deserving of the recognition for this month, and not just because of her length of service. 

Gayenelle Friesen started her career as a nurse in 1973. She has worked through the merging of two hospitals, several name changes, leadership changes and yet, her passion for serving patients remained consistent. 

Known as the best to find a vein for an IV, she is as caring and genuine as they come.&nbsp;

The award, which recognizes extraordinary nurses who go above and beyond to provide exceptional patient care, is presented monthly to nurses across the country.

The DAISY Nursing Award is part of the DAISY Foundation, a non-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of the autoimmune disease idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The foundation's mission is to honor the compassionate care that Barnes received from his nurses and to recognize the extraordinary work that nurses do every day.

Each month, a nurse will be selected by a committee of nurses at Hutchinson Regional to receive The DAISY Award. At a presentation given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors, the honoree will receive a certificate commending him or her for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” The honoree will also be given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.

The DAISY Nursing Award is open to all licensed nurses, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nurse practitioners. Nominees are evaluated based on their commitment to patient care, clinical expertise, and interpersonal skills.

HAVILAND, Kan. — The 92nd Annual Barclay College Ladies Auxiliary Auction will be held on Saturday, October 7, on the Barclay College campus in Haviland, Kansas. All proceeds support the Full Tuition Scholarship that is awarded to all students who live in the dorms.

Barclay College's 92nd Annual Ladies Auxiliary Auction to be held Saturday, Oct. 7

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — From bread-making demonstrations to virtual combine rides to wheat foods competitions, wheat is one of the core ingredients of Kansas State Fair traditions. Whether coming for carnival rides, concerts or contests, scout out everywhere wheat is featured at the fair, which runs this year from September 8 to 17.&nbsp;

Cindy Falk, Kansas Wheat nutrition educator, gave her first Kansas State Fair presentation on “Neat Wheat Treats” as a spokesperson for the Kansas Wheat Commission 35 years ago on a similar state in the Pride of Kansas building. Falk will demonstrate the winning recipe from the 2023 National Festival of Breads. Join her on Wednesday, September 13, from 11-11:30 a.m. in the Domestic Arts building to learn how to make the Cheese Lover’s Barbecue Bread developed by Gloria Piantek West Lafayette, IN.&nbsp;

“The creative ingredient combinations, the circular twisted shape and the undeniable taste made this recipe rise to the top,” Falk said. “Join me to learn how to shape the dough and make this cheesy comfort food for your next tailgate party.”&nbsp;

Joining Falk, Wilma Olds from Wilson, will also demonstrate her submission for the 2023 National Festival of Breads - Nutty Peanut Butter Cinnamon Braids. Her recipe earned an honorable mention in the Go Nuts category. Stay for samples, recipes and a gift bag from the Kansas Wheat Commission, Home Baking Association and Red Star Yeast.

In addition to the formal demonstrations, the Kansas Wheat Commission is also sponsoring the open-class division - It’s All About Bread. Wheaties have collected the annual Kansas Wheat recipe book at the Kansas State Fair for decades. For more than 30 years, Kansas agricultural organizations have shared interactive, hands-on activities with the younger state fair attendees in Agriland in the Pride of Kansas building. The educational exhibit will be open for the length of the state fair. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department put out an electrical fire in a duplex Thursday afternoon.

According to a release from the department, crews responded at 2:43 p.m. at 319 East 8th.&nbsp;

Crews found light smoke coming out of the eaves of a one and a half story duplex. Crews went inside and found light smoke in the attic space. Crews were able to locate the smoldering fire with a thermal imager. Crews were able to open the ceiling to completely extinguish the fire. 

All occupants safely exited the residence prior to arrival. No injuries were reported and moderate damage to home was sustained in the attic area. 

Fire investigators determine the cause to be electrical. 

Hutchinson Fire Department was assisted by Reno County EMS, Hutchinson Police Department, Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communication, Evergy, and Kansas Gas Service.

Hutch Fire works electrical fire Thursday afternoon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A person was burned in a garage fire Wednesday night in Hutchinson.

According to a release from the Hutchinson Fire Department, crews&nbsp;responded to the 1500 Blk of West 12th at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a vehicle on fire. Engine 5 arrived on scene and reported that this was a working fire in a detached garage. Engine 5 immediately upgraded the alarm to a full structure fire response. 

Crews performed a quick and aggressive attack on the fire. Crews achieved extinguishment in a short period of time. The garage was occupied at the time of the fire. The occupant was treated on scene by fire units for second degree burns and was later transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center by Reno County EMS. 

The fire is currently under investigation by HFD investigators. The garage received heavy damage from the fire and a nearby vehicle received minor damage.&nbsp;

Kansas Lottery Chiefs Red Friday is Sept. 15

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If there’s one thing that’s important to IdeaTek, it’s access for all Kansans. That commitment extends to the Kansas State Fair, where IdeaTek is sponsoring free gate admission for 10,000 Reno County students and will provide a complimentary internet cafe on-site during the 10-day event.

“We are honored to continue our partnership with the Kansas State Fair and contribute to the annual celebration in diverse ways,” said Megan Shearer, IdeaTek’s vice president of talent, culture, and customer acquisition. “As part of our commitment, IdeaTek created a free hub where fairgoers can connect to the internet, recharge their devices, and cool off.

“Furthermore, we are excited to extend our support by providing 10,000 complimentary tickets to all students in Reno County,” Shearer added. “The Kansas State Fair is the biggest celebration of our state, and it offers unique learning opportunities. We’re happy to support local students by ensuring they have the opportunity to benefit from all that this event has to offer.”

To build excitement for the Fair, IdeaTek staff, along with a special guest – the Fair’s mascot, Ike, the American bison – made a few stops at local schools in late August to deliver tickets.&nbsp;

“The Kansas State Fair’s Board of Directors and staff are so excited to have such a great Fair and Community Partner in IdeaTek,” said Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz. “With their assistance, we are able to bring Reno County school-age kids to the Fair at no charge, which allows them the opportunity to “Celebrate All Things Kansas”!&nbsp; We appreciate their continued support!”

The official Kansas State Fair started in 1913 and is a celebration of all things Kansas. This year’s state fair is Sept. 8-17.

This year’s state fair is Sept. 8-17.IdeaTek Internet CafeThis is the second year IdeaTek will have a physical presence at the fair with their new internet cafe.&nbsp;The cafe, which features shade, seating, prizes, charging stations, and free public Wi-Fi, will be located across from the Domestic Arts Building and is available to all fairgoers.Based in Buhler, IdeaTek is dedicated to the mission of connecting underserved communities with affordable high-speed fiber internet.&nbsp;“Whether you need to check in with work or want to stay in touch with friends and family — IdeaTek can help keep you connected,” Shearer said. “We know the cellular system can often get overloaded on crowded days, and a public Wi-Fi location hasn’t been offered at the fair in the past.
