HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/382ee1a9-acbd-4c78-8fa8-ea215c411906">The first naloxone vending machine in Kansas is located at the front of the Crossover Recovery Center in Hutchinson.</a> It was revealed at a ribbon cutting ceremony at Crossover on Thursday, Feb. 22.

Naloxone, also known as NARCAN, is a medication designed to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose according to DCCCA. DCCCA Chief Community Based Services Officer Chrissy Mayer said the biggest need for the placement of the machine is accessibility.

"This provides a real anonymous way to allow people to access naloxone for free," Mayer said. "All they have to do is enter their zip code and then product will dispense. So, it really meets a huge need. We did work with some OD mapping as well to help identify a good placement for the machine. Especially in Hutchinson, this area had a high number of overdoses so this makes sense to have it nearby to make it accessible for people who are experiencing overdoses. "

Thomas Simmons, President of the Kansas Recovery Center, said naloxone alone is not going to get people into treatment for addiction but it will keep them alive for services in the future. Simmons said he's seen this concept work in his personal life.&nbsp;

"In 2018 when the Kansas Recovery Network, before they got the 501c3, was handing out Naloxone on street corners," Simmons said. "The reason they started doing that is because a lot of their friends were dying. I knew a lot of those people so a lot of my friends were dying too. And I was almost in their numbers. They didn't know me and I didn't know Kansas Recovery Network at the time, but I was almost one of those people so having the naloxone used on me with a personal experience, and then not finding recovery for another year, and still being able to succeed later on, it has a special place for me because I know exactly what it is used for."&nbsp;

&nbsp;"We are going to start in Hutchinson and use that as a pilot community, funding some various initiatives," Baier said. "And so that's why we picked Hutchinson first, and also for the needs here in Hutchinson, so it worked out for both ways."&nbsp;

Hutchinson first naloxone vending machine location

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County State Rep. Michael Murphy is backing a bill to allow for physical precious metals to pay for items in Kansas.

"We're the first to be moving forward through the committee process," Murphy said. "Florida, Utah, Texas, Oklahoma's working on one, Tennessee's working on one. I think eleven states have made gold and silver legal tender. That mostly is a tax issue, because gold and silver typically is considered property. If you sell it, you get gains. It also becomes taxable for property tax and things like that. When you make it legal tender, that takes that off. You can't take a gold coin or a silver coin in to buy groceries or gas or whatever like that. The idea behind this is, there's new technology that has come around in the last five years that allows us to have a depository."

Murphy currently uses one overseas, but he'd like to see one in Kansas.

"This is actually working and I actually use it," Murphy said. "There's a depository in Switzerland and there's a company named Glint, that you can get a debit card from them and you buy gold and it goes into the depository. You don't have to buy like an ounce. You don't have to buy any specific amount of gold, you buy it by how much money you want to put in. You can buy as little as one cent worth of gold. If you want to buy five dollars, $20, $100, $ 1 million, whatever, you can do that. That sits in the depository. This is not paper, it's actual gold. Then, when you need to go buy gas, groceries, pay rent, whatever like that, you can use that debit card and it will deduct whatever amount that is."

If passed, the depository would be overseen by the Kansas State Treasurer.

"The idea behind doing it at the state level is allowing people to be able to do that, number one, in our country, number two, within our state, number three, with this federal government, I don't care what party you're in, they are both spending money like drunken sailors, no offense to drunken sailors," Murphy said. "It's a crazy $1.5 to $2 trillion of deficit spending a year. We're over $34 trillion now. If you subscribe to modern monetary theory, you think there's nothing wrong with that. If you understand history, you know nobody's ever been able to do that before. We're running ourselves into a big problem."

IdeaTek fiber enters Maize

For researchers at K-State’s Wheat Genetics Resource Center, it’s all about the genes. Using powerful new tools like gene editing, these scientists are taking a molecular look at how to reverse engineer nature’s “survival of the fittest” in the laboratory to improve disease resistance, increase yield and protein quality and even reduce gluten toxicity for individuals with celiac disease.&nbsp;

“Gene editing is essentially just another way of generating new genetic diversity in wheat or in any other crop,” said Eduard Akhunov, K-State distinguished professor of wheat genome diversity and evolution. “And genetic diversity is one of the foundations of crop improvement. Breeders are always trying to bring new genetic diversity in their breeding programs, and they achieve it using various approaches.”&nbsp;

Akhunov recently talked with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations, for an episode of the “Wheat’s on Your Mind” podcast. The pair discussed the technologies now available to speed up the wheat breeding process and how scientists are leveraging ancient genes to improve modern-day wheat.&nbsp;

Akhunov and Harries discussed the differences between the tools wheat researchers now have at their disposal, including transgenics, CRISPR and more. The commonality is that they start by looking at a plant at the genetic level.&nbsp;

“Breeders will generally look at things like specific physical traits when they’re crossing plants to create new varieties,” Harries said. “But you’re going even smaller. You’re looking at genes.”&nbsp;

With transgenics, researchers are introducing a gene that is not naturally present in in the plant. In the case of Bt corn, scientists introduced genes from a naturally occurring soil bacterium — Bacillus thuringiensis — into the corn genome to produce a protein that kills the larvae of the European corn borer.&nbsp;

For wheat, Akhunov and other researchers use a simpler, yet powerful tool to edit genomes — CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Introduced in 2012, this technology acts like molecular scissors that make incredibly precise changes to very specific places in the wheat genome. Doing so allows researchers to selectively modify very small parts of the genome to control expressed traits — like improved disease resistance.&nbsp;

“CRISPR editing is a precise way of modifying a specific part of the genome and leaving a small scar in the genome,” Akhunov said. “CRISPR editing provides a very diverse set of tools for modifying genome. You could remove genes; you could put in new pieces or you could precisely modify a gene to improve the trait. But in all these cases, you are not introducing something new. You are essentially using the existing genetic code, but you are just tweaking a little bit to improve traits that you are interested in.”

One example of this work is Akhunov’s work to knock out genes that negatively impact traits, like the ones that control size. When that specific regulator is knocked out, the loss of function improves the trait — in this case, increasing grain size by 10 to 20 percent. First identified in rice, this same gene found in wheat, called GW2, not only increases kernel size and plumpness but also improves protein content.&nbsp;

Identifying the exact function of a gene like GW2 is critical to the success of this work, especially since most genes in wheat have at least three copies in the genome — all of which have to be edited to have the highest effectiveness.&nbsp;

“Gene editing is focused on modifying individual genes and knowing the structure of the gene, where it is, and how many copies of the gene you have,” Akhunov said. “It’s actually quite important to have precise genetic information about individual wheat varieties.”

Just like GW2, this means researchers can access genetic information from other crops accumulated over decades of research. The comparison of this genomic data allows researchers to compare the genes between different crops. Instead of transplanting a gene from rice, sorghum or corn to achieve an outcome, it’s knowledge that is transferred from researcher to researcher. Scientists like Akhunov can then use genetic sequencing to identify if those same genes are present in the wheat genome. If the genes are present independently in both crops, then researchers can make the same tweaks to those genes to see if they produce the same effect in wheat.&nbsp;

“The comparison of the genomic data now available for all these crops allows us to compare across the species and identify identical genes among the crops,” Akhunov said. “I can use the information collected by my colleagues from other crop communities to transfer that into wheat and then try to modify the gene using CRISPR technology. And in many cases, it turned out that the genes that we modify have similar effects or affect the same trait that was characterized and studied in other crops.”

Researchers are using a similar sequence-and-test process to identify genes and traits from wild wheat relatives that could improve commercial wheat varieties. The Wheat Genetics Resource Center maintains a gene bank of more than 2,500 wheat accessions and 2,200 cytogenetic stocks — a collection of seeds from wild relatives of bread wheat along with historic and modern wheat breeding lines.&nbsp;

Before genetic sequencing and CRISPR technology, scientists would have to make crosses between wild relatives and modern wheat — made difficult because of a gene that prevents this exact process from happening in the wild. Successful crosses would then have not just one small piece transferred from one to the other, but large amounts of genetic material — all of which would have to be grown and tested for desirable outcomes in the laboratory or the field.&nbsp;

Genetic editing tools substantially decrease the difficulty and time required to make these crosses. Researchers can more quickly screen wild relatives for genes that affect disease resistance, quality, yield or adaptation to drought stress or heat stress. Then researchers can test whether those same genes are present in modern wheat lines or if they can be molecularly adjusted with CRISPR technology to achieve those same traits. While these lines are not yet available, promising results are just on the horizon.&nbsp;

“Applying gene editing technology for improving disease resistance is probably quite straightforward,” Akhunov said. “For example, there are genes that are called so-called susceptibility genes that make wheat more susceptible to disease. And by applying gene editing, it’s quite easy to remove these genes from the wheat genome, which will make plants resistant. And this is happening now, and there are a number of projects that are moving in that direction. So, for that specific trait, we’ll probably see results very soon.”

Equally as promising for consumers, researchers have successfully used CRISPR-Cas9 to reduce the presence of two types of gluten-coding genes called gliadins that are known to be abundant in immunoreactive peptides — the amino acid building blocks that form proteins. In simpler terms, researchers are unlocking how to lessen the adverse effects of gluten for those with celiac or other autoimmune diseases. When these gluten-coding genes were edited, Akhunov and his team were able to reduce the immunotoxicity caused by gliadin genes in wheat by 47-fold, while not sacrificing bread-making quality.&nbsp;

“What it means for people with celiac disease in its severe form, of course, we would certainly not recommend using this flour and say that it is safe for celiac patients,” Akhunov said. “But it is an important step forward. We could substantially, dramatically decrease their immunotoxicity.”&nbsp;

Whether researchers are looking to improve agronomic traits, apply what colleagues have learned by working with other crops, test for similar traits in wild relatives or even reduce toxicity, there is no doubt that scientists like Akhunov are still unlocking the potential of what technology like CRISPR will provide to wheat farmers, millers, bakers and consumers.&nbsp;

“That’s a question that we’ll be answering for the next decade or so — what we could achieve and what we cannot,” Akhunov said. “But we should consider CRISPR-Cas9 as a very powerful tool in the hands of scientists. And then I believe in the future, we could apply quite complex gene editing strategies and then modify multiple genes at the same time and achieve something that we cannot imagine now.”&nbsp;

Using powerful new tools like gene editing, these scientists are taking a molecular look at how to reverse engineer nature’s “survival of the fittest” in the laboratory to improve disease resistance, increase yield and protein quality and even reduce gluten toxicity for individuals with celiac disease.&nbsp;“Gene editing is essentially just another way of generating new genetic diversity in wheat or in any other crop,” said Eduard Akhunov, K-State distinguished professor of wheat genome diversity and evolution. “And genetic diversity is one of the foundations of crop improvement. Breeders are always trying to bring new genetic diversity in their breeding programs, and they achieve it using various approaches.”&nbsp;Akhunov recently talked with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations, for an episode of the “Wheat’s on Your Mind” podcast. The pair discussed the technologies now available to speed up the wheat breeding process and how scientists are leveraging ancient genes to improve modern-day wheat.&nbsp;Modifying the Wheat GenomeAkhunov and Harries discussed the differences between the tools wheat researchers now have at their disposal, including transgenics, CRISPR and more. The commonality is that they start by looking at a plant at the genetic level.&nbsp;“Breeders will generally look at things like specific physical traits when they’re crossing plants to create new varieties,” Harries said. “But you’re going even smaller. You’re looking at genes.”&nbsp;With transgenics, researchers are introducing a gene that is not naturally present in in the plant. In the case of Bt corn, scientists introduced genes from a naturally occurring soil bacterium — Bacillus thuringiensis — into the corn genome to produce a protein that kills the larvae of the European corn borer.&nbsp;For wheat, Akhunov and other researchers use a simpler, yet powerful tool to edit genomes — CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Introduced in 2012, this technology acts like molecular scissors that make incredibly precise changes to very specific places in the wheat genome. Doing so allows researchers to selectively modify very small parts of the genome to control expressed traits — like improved disease resistance.&nbsp;“CRISPR editing is a precise way of modifying a specific part of the genome and leaving a small scar in the genome,” Akhunov said. “CRISPR editing provides a very diverse set of tools for modifying genome. You could remove genes; you could put in new pieces or you could precisely modify a gene to improve the trait. But in all these cases, you are not introducing something new. You are essentially using the existing genetic code, but you are just tweaking a little bit to improve traits that you are interested in.”One example of this work is Akhunov’s work to knock out genes that negatively impact traits, like the ones that control size. When that specific regulator is knocked out, the loss of function improves the trait — in this case, increasing grain size by 10 to 20 percent. First identified in rice, this same gene found in wheat, called GW2, not only increases kernel size and plumpness but also improves protein content.&nbsp;Identifying the exact function of a gene like GW2 is critical to the success of this work, especially since most genes in wheat have at least three copies in the genome — all of which have to be edited to have the highest effectiveness.&nbsp;“Gene editing is focused on modifying individual genes and knowing the structure of the gene, where it is, and how many copies of the gene you have,” Akhunov said. “It’s actually quite important to have precise genetic information about individual wheat varieties.”Just like GW2, this means researchers can access genetic information from other crops accumulated over decades of research. The comparison of this genomic data allows researchers to compare the genes between different crops. Instead of transplanting a gene from rice, sorghum or corn to achieve an outcome, it’s knowledge that is transferred from researcher to researcher. Scientists like Akhunov can then use genetic sequencing to identify if those same genes are present in the wheat genome. If the genes are present independently in both crops, then researchers can make the same tweaks to those genes to see if they produce the same effect in wheat.&nbsp;“The comparison of the genomic data now available for all these crops allows us to compare across the species and identify identical genes among the crops,” Akhunov said. “I can use the information collected by my colleagues from other crop communities to transfer that into wheat and then try to modify the gene using CRISPR technology. And in many cases, it turned out that the genes that we modify have similar effects or affect the same trait that was characterized and studied in other crops.”Researchers are using a similar sequence-and-test process to identify genes and traits from wild wheat relatives that could improve commercial wheat varieties. The Wheat Genetics Resource Center maintains a gene bank of more than 2,500 wheat accessions and 2,200 cytogenetic stocks — a collection of seeds from wild relatives of bread wheat along with historic and modern wheat breeding lines.&nbsp;Before genetic sequencing and CRISPR technology, scientists would have to make crosses between wild relatives and modern wheat — made difficult because of a gene that prevents this exact process from happening in the wild. Successful crosses would then have not just one small piece transferred from one to the other, but large amounts of genetic material — all of which would have to be grown and tested for desirable outcomes in the laboratory or the field.&nbsp;Genetic editing tools substantially decrease the difficulty and time required to make these crosses. Researchers can more quickly screen wild relatives for genes that affect disease resistance, quality, yield or adaptation to drought stress or heat stress. Then researchers can test whether those same genes are present in modern wheat lines or if they can be molecularly adjusted with CRISPR technology to achieve those same traits. While these lines are not yet available, promising results are just on the horizon.&nbsp;“Applying gene editing technology for improving disease resistance is probably quite straightforward,” Akhunov said. “For example, there are genes that are called so-called susceptibility genes that make wheat more susceptible to disease. And by applying gene editing, it’s quite easy to remove these genes from the wheat genome, which will make plants resistant. And this is happening now, and there are a number of projects that are moving in that direction. So, for that specific trait, we’ll probably see results very soon.”Equally as promising for consumers, researchers have successfully used CRISPR-Cas9 to reduce the presence of two types of gluten-coding genes called gliadins that are known to be abundant in immunoreactive peptides — the amino acid building blocks that form proteins. In simpler terms, researchers are unlocking how to lessen the adverse effects of gluten for those with celiac or other autoimmune diseases. When these gluten-coding genes were edited, Akhunov and his team were able to reduce the immunotoxicity caused by gliadin genes in wheat by 47-fold, while not sacrificing bread-making quality.&nbsp;“What it means for people with celiac disease in its severe form, of course, we would certainly not recommend using this flour and say that it is safe for celiac patients,” Akhunov said. “But it is an important step forward. We could substantially, dramatically decrease their immunotoxicity.”&nbsp;Whether researchers are looking to improve agronomic traits, apply what colleagues have learned by working with other crops, test for similar traits in wild relatives or even reduce toxicity, there is no doubt that scientists like Akhunov are still unlocking the potential of what technology like CRISPR will provide to wheat farmers, millers, bakers and consumers.&nbsp;“That’s a question that we’ll be answering for the next decade or so — what we could achieve and what we cannot,” Akhunov said. “But we should consider CRISPR-Cas9 as a very powerful tool in the hands of scientists. SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A public meeting last week in South Hutchinson was designed to get more thoughts about the community's branding. That's one thing City Administrator Jeff Schenk saw was inconsistently executed as he came into the office.

"The green on my business cards didn't match the green on the sign out front," Schenk said. "The City Hall sign doesn't match the nature trail sign. The green on that doesn't match the water tower, which doesn't match the green on our website. It was just kind of a frustrating thing for me. Then, trying to start organizing things, picking Word fonts and things like that, I started getting out into the community and talking with residents and business owners, trying to figure out, kind of, what they wanted to see, kind of finding out that, really, nobody really felt like the Southern Hospitality, Kansas Style and the green and gold, they didn't feel like it represented them."

There is now a <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdjcZ0a2Pi4sJ30xiuL8qVApsuft_GE13jfL0cTiaAlJXcweg/viewform">survey</a> out to try to figure out the best direction for the community when it comes to messaging and color concepts.

"If we chose to stay with the same one, there's still going to be a cost to consolidate colors and try and match the schemes that we have," Schenk said. "The big thing with that, though, is looking at it as a cost or as an investment. We have two water towers that are going to need to be painted, we have all of the buildings that need to be updated and redone. We have a fleet of vehicles that need to have some logos and stuff put on them. When you're looking at the millions of dollars that you're going to end up spending, it's really a really small price and it's something that we get to keep for a very, very long time."

The City Council will still need to approve going forward with any changes, and in fact, there are even going to need to be some changes to where they meet.

"We have to redo the council chambers, just to bring it up to today's standards, being able to televise," Schenk said. "Different things that kind of are becoming an industry standard. I don't want to tear apart a room and paint it one color, then have something change. I want to do everything one time."

The next meeting of the South Hutchinson City Council is Monday, Feb. 26.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of North Lorraine Street and East 30th Avenue.

Between 1969 and 1973, Tony and Edna Temaat both worked in the offices of the Egbert Oil Co.

In 1973, they bought the Gulf Oil Gas Station at 1123 E. 4th, which Tony managed. This was the start of the T &amp; E Oil Co.

In 1977, they also acquired the filling stations at 23 W. Ave A and 8 N. Main in South Hutch.

In 1978, they also acquired the station at 2021 E. 4th.

In 1979, Tony and Edna sold T &amp; E Oil to the Stanley Brown family.

In 1980, T &amp; E Oil built and started a new concept in filling stations at 1329 E. 30th, calling it the T &amp; E Oil U-Gas Station. The first photo shows that station at opening.

 The second photo shows the advertising for the grand opening.

In 1984, Tony and Edna built the Temaat strip center directly south of this station. After this point, the T &amp; E Oil Co. transitioned its gas stations to more of a convenience store concept.

In 2003, T &amp; E Oil sold off its Pantry Plusses to the Kwik Shop group. The third photo shows the current property occupants of the 1329 E. 30th location, the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, with the Temaat strip center directly behind. This property is now owned by the Wooderson Gst. exempt trust.

📷 Throwback Thursday: T & E Oil - Vol. 58

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Rayna Hollingsworth says cosmetology is an art form. Aside from the art of mixing hair color and custom cutting, Hollingsworth has emulated that passion into another piece of art. Hollingsworth is a cosmetologist and co-owner of Haydens &amp; CO Salon.&nbsp;

On the green wall in the back of Haydens, hangs an eight foot colorful sign with the word impact. The word inspiration for the sign came from a business trip she attended last January.

"We impact each other's lives every single day as humans," Hollingsworth said. "Whether it be good, bad, indifferent. As a hairstylist, I impact people's lives every single day. It's a great conversation starter."&nbsp;

While on her trip, Hollingsworth saw a sign at a restaurant that had the words "eat more color on the front." The backdrop was made up of items that even included a shoe.

"I'm like that's perfect but now where do I get that? So I'm like, I can create that."

Hollingsworth did exactly that. She created the sign completely on her own by using recycled materials. Materials include beads, broken jewelry, toys, keys, color tubelet lids from hair color, pins, a hairbrush, her first set of shears from cosmetology school, butterflies from flower arrangements that she received from her husband and more. She drew on a sunflower, lipstick tube, hairbrush, monstera leaves and a tree. Each letter was beaded.&nbsp;

Haydens &amp; CO uses Aveda products which she said inspired the use for recycled materials.&nbsp;

"Aveda is a green company and they want to impact the world in a positive way," Hollingsworth said. "They don't want to be harmful to our environment." I wanted the piece to be impactful so it's recycled going on the whole green part of Aveda as well because that's the product. When we use them we really believe in saving the environment and that kind of thing."&nbsp;

The entire canvas was also painted to blend each section of the collage together. The only items not recycled are the permanent adhesive used to keep items on the board and resin that was poured to seal and give the sign a glossy finish.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"I wanted it to also be kind of rainbowesque in the way that the colors flowed together," Hollingsworth said.&nbsp;

The sign was hung at Haydens &amp; CO at the end of January. The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/haydenssalon/">downtown salon</a> is located at 306 S. Main. Some of Hayden's services include facials, manicures, pedicures, hair design, hair coloring, and lash services.&nbsp;

Aside from the art of mixing hair color and custom cutting, Hollingsworth has emulated that passion into another piece of art. Hollingsworth is a cosmetologist and co-owner of Haydens &amp; CO Salon.&nbsp;On the green wall in the back of Haydens, hangs an eight foot colorful sign with the word impact. The word inspiration for the sign came from a business trip she attended last January."We impact each other's lives every single day as humans," Hollingsworth said. "Whether it be good, bad, indifferent. As a hairstylist, I impact people's lives every single day. It's a great conversation starter."&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>While on her trip, Hollingsworth saw a sign at a restaurant that had the words "eat more color on the front." The backdrop was made up of items that even included a shoe."I'm like that's perfect but now where do I get that? So I'm like, I can create that."<figure>

 </figure>Hollingsworth did exactly that. She created the sign completely on her own by using recycled materials. Materials include beads, broken jewelry, toys, keys, color tubelet lids from hair color, pins, a hairbrush, her first set of shears from cosmetology school, butterflies from flower arrangements that she received from her husband and more. She drew on a sunflower, lipstick tube, hairbrush, monstera leaves and a tree. Each letter was beaded.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Haydens &amp; CO uses Aveda products which she said inspired the use for recycled materials.&nbsp;"Aveda is a green company and they want to impact the world in a positive way," Hollingsworth said. "They don't want to be harmful to our environment." I wanted the piece to be impactful so it's recycled going on the whole green part of Aveda as well because that's the product. When we use them we really believe in saving the environment and that kind of thing."&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The entire canvas was also painted to blend each section of the collage together. The only items not recycled are the permanent adhesive used to keep items on the board and resin that was poured to seal and give the sign a glossy finish.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>&nbsp;"I wanted it to also be kind of rainbowesque in the way that the colors flowed together," Hollingsworth said.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The sign was hung at Haydens &amp; CO at the end of January. The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/haydenssalon/">downtown salon</a> is located at 306 S. Main. Some of Hayden's services include facials, manicures, pedicures, hair design, hair coloring, and lash services.&nbsp;<figure>

Sign in salon is 'conversation starter'

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;HEELO Inc. is hosting a community mural art contest, We are looking for all artist ages 15 years of age to 100 years of age to design a mock - up for a community mural that will be painted in the Spring-Summer 2024.&nbsp;

The Mural theme is&nbsp;"Community Empowerment, Diversity and Inclusion".&nbsp;All submissions will be given to the HEELO Inc. community selection committee to determine the winner.

The winner will receive $300 and artist recognition on the community mural. All artist who submits will be given the opportunity to part of the painting of the community mural art project. 

All Entries will be notified with further details once the selection process has concluded.&nbsp; The location of the mural will be announced  once the contest has been completed and a artist mock up has been selected by the committee.

HEELO Inc. looking for artists for contest

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Central Christian School will have their Kindergarten Exploration and First Grade Preview starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, at the school, 1910 East 30th Avenue in Hutchinson.

According to Director of Admissions Amber Osner, Central Christian provides their elementary students with an outstanding educational and spiritual foundation that focuses on developing character qualities that will last a lifetime. She stated that their instruction includes a strong phonics-based reading curriculum as well as other advanced learning instruction. The elementary school provides a structured classroom setting balanced with creative freedom and a low student-teacher ratio. 

A half-day (a.m. or p.m.) kindergarten program is offered with an optional afternoon enrichment program.

At the CCS Kindergarten Exploration and First Grade Preview, parents will see this year’s kindergarten students demonstrate impressive things they have been learning. There will also be a time for parents to visit with teachers and administrators and receive information about the school’s outstanding offerings and about financial aid. During the parents session, children will participate in supervised activities, and refreshments will be provided.

CCS Kindergarten Exploration and First Grade Preview scheduled

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Spring Break Splashdown is taking place March 8 through 17 at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS. 

Those 10 days encompass spring breaks for many Kansas schools, and the Cosmosphere will be open every day during that period with extended hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Spring Into STEM Camp, is a STEM-based day camp for fourth through sixth grade students that takes place on March 11-15 during Spring Break. Students will conduct a mission in the Cosmosphere’s capsule-based simulator Astralis, launch experiments as high as fifteen miles on a high altitude balloon, and meet astronaut Steve Swanson in person.

Coffee at the Cosmo, a free public lecture series with coffee and refreshments, will take place March 21 at 9 a.m. in the Banquet Room. Shannon Whetzel, the Cosmosphere’s curator, presents “Sally Ride: Cosmic Trailblazer.”

Also, the Cosmosphere will show Kung Fu Panda 4 at the Carey Digital Dome Theater starting on its release date, March 8. The movie will play at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through March 17.

Ag drone company started locally

LINDSBORG, Kan. — Bethany College is thrilled to announce the selection of three outstanding students to participate in the prestigious Kansas Intercollegiate Band. Dominic Grizzle, a Freshman Music Performance Major from Broken Arrow, OK, Zachary Salas, a Sophomore Music Education Major from Salina, KS, on trombone, and Ariana Nunez, a Sophomore Music Education Major from Salina, KS, on horn, have been chosen to join this esteemed ensemble, showcasing their exceptional musical talent and dedication.

The Kansas Intercollegiate Band is a highly competitive auditioned group comprised of the finest collegiate musicians from across the state. Selected through a rigorous adjudication process by Kansas college and university professors, these students have demonstrated their exceptional abilities and commitment to musical excellence.

Shawn Knopp, Intercollegiate Band Chair, expresses his anticipation for the 2024 Kansas Intercollegiate Band, stating, "I look forward to seeing the extraordinary talent that will comprise the 2024 Kansas Intercollegiate Band."

The students will have the opportunity to rehearse during the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop on February 22 &amp; 23, 2024, with the culminating performance scheduled for February 23rd at Century II.

Shelley Jagow, Professor of Music at Wright State University School of Music, will be the featured conductor for this year's Kansas Intercollegiate Band.

In response to this achievement, Keith Dodson, Assistant Professor of Music, commented, "This is a remarkable accomplishment for Dominic, Zachary, and Ariana. Their dedication and talent have shone through, earning them a well-deserved place in the Kansas Intercollegiate Band."

Three Bethany students make Kansas Intercollegiate Band

STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College announced on social media Tuesday that a team of eleven will be traveling to Ghana, Africa, May 14th to 26th, 2024. 

This team is embarking on a life-changing experience, aiming to share the hope of the gospel, and be the hands and feet of Christ.

MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. visited Mercy Hospital in Moundridge on Tuesday to learn about its transition to a Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) designation.&nbsp; Mercy Hospital is only the second hospital in Kansas to move to the REH model since the federal designation was created in 2021 and state regulations were finalized in 2023. Mercy Hospital administrator Aaron Herbel provided a tour of the facility to showcase the medical services that will remain to serve its patients and discuss the financial benefits of the new designation.

Mercy Hospital’s designation as a REH, effective Jan. 1, 2023, was a strategic move by the hospital board and administrative team to provide financial stability and ensure a continued presence in the community. Under the new designation, the hospital will provide 24/7 emergency medical care, laboratory testing, physical therapy, radiology, outpatient surgery, clinic services, observation services, and other outpatient services.

“I am pleased to see that Mercy Hospital has taken the initiative to transition to the new Rural Emergency Hospital model,”&nbsp;said Senator Marshall.&nbsp;“Hospital leadership was thoughtful in its consideration of the impacts of the changes but ultimately understood this new designation would provide long-term financial security. This new designation creates a more cost-effective alternative and ensures that patients will continue to have immediate access to quality care in their community.”

Mercy Hospital CEO Aaron Herbel highlighted the positive changes under the REH model, saying,&nbsp;“We are excited about the new services we will be able to bring to the community like a walk-in care clinic, non-emergent transportation, access to additional specialty services, and potentially home health services.”

Marshall visits Moundridge hospital

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann held his Reno County town hall meeting Wednesday morning at Sunny's Cafe at Sunshine Meadows in Buhler.

"Government funding, our debt was talked about, the border is on everybody's mind," Mann said. "A lot of other policies coming out of the administration like the 30 by 30 land grab we talked about and how we're pushing back on that. That came up as a question, as did Ukraine funding and other national security issues."

Mann said government funding will be the primary topic when he returns to Washington next week, as well.

"Government funding for a lot of the agencies, expires on March 1," Mann said. "The others expires March 7. This is all funding that expired Sept. 30, has been extended a couple of times. I voted against extending. We can't keep just kicking the can down the field. We've got to address our spending. Those are the things, when we go back to Washington next week, are going to be front and center, as otherwise, we'd be headed towards a government shutdown on March 1 and March 7."

Another issue Mann would like to see dealt with as soon as possible is additional funding for security on the U.S. border with Mexico. There's a bill that the House has already passed that the Senate could take up when it wants, if a serious solution is what the administration desires.

"H.R. 2 is the most comprehensive immigration, border security bill done for decades," Mann said of the bill that passed last year with only Republican support. "It's got to go together. We've got to secure the border. We've got to change our immigration policies. Understand, though, the President could take action today to reinstate remain in Mexico and end catch and release. If he were to do that, the numbers we're seeing at the border would plummet. It wouldn't solve the problem, but it would be a massive step in the right direction. It's very frustrating to me that so far, he's not been willing to do that."

Mann is continuing town hall meetings across Kansas Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Mann holds Reno County town hall

TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly announced on Wednesday that nearly $16.5 million will go toward 17 short line rail expansion and rehabilitation projects. Three of those projects are in the Hutch Post area. These investments, made through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Rail Service Improvement Program (RSIP), will improve the state's agriculture supply chain.  

“These needed rail infrastructure improvements will lift up rural Kansas and, in doing so, will maximize the economic potential of the entire state,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “By strengthening agriculture supply chains, my administration is helping our farmers and ranchers connect to regional, national, and international markets.” 

RSIP recipients will use the funds for expansion and capacity improvements, major track rehabilitation, and rail replacement. These projects support rail improvements that enhance safety, expand carload capabilities, reduce truck traffic, increase operating speeds, and improve operating efficiencies.
