Broadway's Rock of Ages Band® Set to Play at the 2024 Kansas State Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A woman accused of attempted murder was booked into the Reno County jail on Friday on charges connected with a January incident.

Cambi Leigh Colley had a complaint filed against her in Reno County District Court on January 23 for an incident that the complaint says occurred January 21 in Reno County.

The complaint says Colley is being jailed for allegedly trying to kill Mavice L Reed-Butters on January 21.

Further, the state alleges that the crime in this case is connected with domestic violence and requests that any conviction, if it happens from the incident, be considered a domestic violence offense.

Reno County Sheriff Darrian Campbell told Hutch Post that the booking was after transferring Colley back from Larned, but that any further information would need to come from the Hutchinson Police Department, as this is their case.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Sleep Tight Foundation is continuing its efforts to raise funds to eradicate bedbugs in Reno County, but right now they have some money to help.

"We are accepting applications right now," said Monica Warren with the foundation. "We do have funds to help people in the community and it is going to be probably getting busier with the spread of the bedbugs here soon."

Based on the yearly caseload, if the foundation could get 500 giving units to give a regular amount of $10 per month, Warren believes they could effectively eradicate bedbugs in Reno County.

"Businesses, individuals, families, non-profit organizations, churches, can give us $10 a month," Warren said. "That would essentially allow us to help probably around 50 homes a year. We have estimated that's really what's needed to keep this at bay, to keep this from spreading in Reno County."

Sometimes they have to make families wait until they have the funds to pay for the treatment. It's not usually longer than a month or so, but with each treatment at $700 to $800 on the low end, it would work a lot better to get ahead of the game and not allow the bedbugs any additional time to multiply. Cleanliness has no relationship to the degree of bedbug infestation.

"They go online, they fill out an application, or they request an application from us," Warren said. "Fill that out. We do need an estimate and there's companies in town, for instance, Advance Termite and Pest Control, that will do that for free. Those are the two things that are required, just an application, we get that approved and we initially pay 80%. That's kind of the initial funding. Families can request more from our board."

Land Bank Board to meet Tuesday

LINDSBORG, Kan. —&nbsp;Twelve Bethany College students were selected to perform at the Messiah Festival of the Arts Student Honors Recital at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in Pearson Chapel on the Bethany College campus. The performance is free and open to the public.

Students performing include Ella McNett, mezzo-soprano, is a freshman Vocal Music Education major from Larned, Kansas. Aubrey Larson, mezzo-soprano, is a junior vocal music education major from Russell, Kansas. Tony Robb, baritone, is a senior music major from Westmoreland, Kansas. JoLee Hurren, violin, is a freshman majoring in instrumental music education and performance from Salina, Kansas. Justin Woolsey, percussion, is a junior majoring in instrumental music education from Newton, Kansas. Dominic Grizzle, trombone, is a freshman Music Performance major from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. 

Christian LaCount, tenor, is a senior vocal music education major from Wichita, Kansas. Gracelyn Gaskill, soprano, is a senior majoring in chemistry and music from Lindsborg, Kansas. LaNae Hostetler, violin, is a freshman instrumental music education and performance major from Wichita, Kansas. Paige Baird, viola, is a freshman majoring in instrumental music education from Salina, Kansas. Raleigh Jarrett, violin, is a sophomore majoring in instrumental music education from Hutchinson, Kansas. Ariana Nuñéz, French horn, is a sophomore instrumental music education and performance major from Salina, Kansas. These students have demonstrated exceptional musical abilities and will deliver a memorable performance.

"We are proud to showcase these talented musicians. Developing one's solo capabilities is essential to future success, and these students represent a high commitment to the art of performing music. Their dedication is something to be celebrated," says Dan Masterson, Professor of Music.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will get a look at the solar regulations for Reno County at their meeting on Wednesday.

According to the agenda packet, on December 27, 2023, the County Commissioners directed the Planning Staff and the Planning Commission to cease further discussion and development of Large-Scale Commercial Solar Energy Project regulations and focus instead on Limited-Scale Commercial Solar Energy Project regulations.

To accomplish this new directive, the moratorium was extended till July 1, 2024.

To comply with this directive, the Planning Commission met on January 18, 2024, February 5, 2024, and February 15, 2024, to revise the document for Limited-Scale Commercial Solar Energy Projects.

The residential ground-mounted solar energy project regulations were removed from the new document and will be placed under Article 15 - Permitted Accessory Uses. Re-location under a different Article will require a new public hearing to gather public input on the draft.

On February 15, 2024, the Planning Commission voted 7-0 to recommend to the County Commissioners, adoption of the Limited-Scale Commercial Solar Energy regulations and the Table of Contents that are part of the draft in the agenda packet.

Some key points of the draft regulations are as follows:

Regulations only apply to the zoned area of the County.

Limited scale is defined as a 10-acre or less parcel/lease area and generating two megawatts of AC power or less.

List of all local, state, and Federal agencies required to review or approve the project.

No project can be within two miles of another project.

Solar panels are to be setback 100 feet from the road right of way and all non-participating property lines in effect at the time of the application.

500 feet setback from a non-participating landowner's principal building.

25 feet from a fence associated with providing security.

No lights unless approved by the conditional use permit.

Any battery storage must be in a building and not located within 500 of a non-participating property owner's principal building.

Noise can't exceed 60 decibels measured at the outer wall of a non-participating property owner's principal building.

No rock, gravel, or other impervious material may be placed under the solar panels.

No developer's agreement required. However, there are decommissioning requirements.

Limited Scale Solar Projects are defined as producing energy used offsite but under 10 acres in size and generating 2 Megawatts or less of electricity.

The planning commission intends to work next on residential and private solar regulations. Staff are requesting that, if the limited scale regulations are approved, the moratorium be lifted only regarding that use and only in the zoned portion. That moratorium is included with a separate agenda item.

One continuous source of public confusion is that only a portion of Reno County is zoned. If the entire county were zoned then the regulations on solar, wind, and other uses would be uniform. If the county were fully zoned, large portions of the currently ‘unzoned’ portion would be agricultural and agricultural buildings are exempt from zoning regulations, however any solar, wind and other restrictions would apply to those areas.

Moving forward on solar, staff are requesting guidance from the commissioners on the following questions:

Should large scale commercial solar be allowed anywhere in the county?

Should commercial wind be allowed anywhere in the county?

Should residential and private solar be regulated?

Does the commission want to consider county wide zoning? If so should public hearings be held in the affected areas?

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —A Hutchinson USD 308 elementary school will officially go by a different name.&nbsp; Stem Magnet School at Allen will be referenced to as Allen STEM Magnet School. The name was revealed at a school assembly on Friday afternoon.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Jessica Thomas is in her first year as the principal of the now "Allen STEM Magnet School."&nbsp;

"The teachers came to me at the beginning of the year and they said we've been trying to change the name for awhile," Thomas said. "We think our name is too long and confusing. We'd like to shorten it down. I started looking into what would it take to change the name, talking to the superintendent about it and then we really just got a lot of really good feedback from the kids and the teachers, and the parents and voted on what name they wanted and then I presented it to the board and here we are.&nbsp;

Goering met strict scholarship guidelines to achieve this award, including a minimum unweighted 3.5 GPA, minimum ACT composite score of 27 or SAT Composite score of 1280, or rank in the top 10% of your class at the end of junior year. Goering scored a 31 on the ACT. She competed in the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational in November of 2023. Goering plans to major in English or Creative Writing at WSU this fall.

A lifelong Salthawk, she participated in volleyball, basketball, powerlifting, Rise Up Reno, raving writers, and orchestra.

“I definitely had a lot of people who helped me get to this point in my life. I can’t possibly name them all. Thank you, first and foremost, to my parents, Matt and Tisha Goering.”

When asked if she wanted to thank any teachers for their help along the way, she quickly rattled off many of her most admired teachers. Goering always felt supported by her English teachers, Ms. Whiteford, Ms. Herina, Ms. Smith, and Mrs. Carithers. Additionally, Goering felt her History teachers were always good at promoting her creativity. She name-dropped Mr. Malaschuck, Ms. Yantis, and Ms. Burden. Mrs. Morris, HHS Counselor, assisted with scholarship applications.

Before winning this scholarship, Goering was considering other career options including a possible career in electrician. Through Mr. Beck’s carpentry class, Goering discovered she enjoyed the building trades. She says she will enjoy writing and keeping carpentry as a hobby.

Hutch High Senior earns full tuition to WSU

ST. JOHN, Kan. — According to a Friday Facebook post, Edwards County Medical Center and Clinics has made the difficult decision to close St. John Medical Clinic, effective Monday, April 29, 2024. 

 The Edwards County Medical Center Admin team, in collaboration with the Board of Directors, came to this decision due to various factors including low volumes, challenges with payors, rising costs of supplies and staffing. They hope to assist in recruiting another clinic to open.

CEO Jimmie Hansel stated, "We have enjoyed working in the St. John area. This was a difficult decision to make, and we hope to continue to serve the St. John community and surrounding areas from our Midway Clinic location in Kinsley."&nbsp; 

To ease the transition, patients can see their current St. John Medical Clinic providers and staff from Midway Clinic. Current and previous patients will be receiving a letter from Edwards County Medical Center with more information. 

“It has been a privilege to serve the St. John community, however it was not cost effective for us to continue to do so. Thank you to the patients who came to St. John Medical Clinic for their health needs,” said Pam Wetzel, Edwards County Medical Center Board Chair. 

Medical records will remain in their system, providing easy access for patients who are seen at Midway Clinic. Patient records can be requested as needed by calling Midway Clinic at 620-659-2732.&nbsp;

The Stafford County Health Department reminds St. John residents that&nbsp; there are still resources in Stafford County for medical care if it is difficult to get transportation out of county. The health department offers lab services, with or without a doctor’s order, and provides immunizations.

St. John clinic will close in April

NEWTON, Kan. — The Meridian Center was excited to host Newton's first Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge March 6 in partnership with the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce and NetWork Kansas.&nbsp;The event featured 28 unique business ideas created by Newton High School JAG students to encourage the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Congratulations&nbsp;to C&amp;D Mexican Buffet for taking first place, Bark Bandana for coming in second, and Don't Be Dirty for placing third. And the People's Choice awards went to Double A Bakery and Kustom Kreationz!
