HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is reaching out to the public for assistance in locating potholes that need to be repaired.

Here's what causes potholes:
• Cracks in the Asphalt: Rain, snow, and ice seep into tiny cracks in the road.
• Expansion: As temperatures drop, the water freezes and expands, widening the cracks.
• Pooling Water: Once the cracks grow, water reaches the soil beneath the road and freezes again, which shifts the ground and pushes up the asphalt.
• Collapsing Asphalt: As the ice melts, the weakened surface collapses, forming a pothole. This cycle repeats as temperatures fluctuate, causing further damage.
