HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The We Are Salthawks-Ultimate Benefit and Auction is Saturday.

"It's at the Kansas State Fairgrounds Sunflower South building," said Amanda Parks with the Salthawk Booster Club. "We'd love to see everyone there. Even if you don't have an athlete, just come out and have a great night, because all of the money that we raise this weekend will go toward next year's sports."

The event has already raised $43,610 of the $125,000 goal as of Thursday morning before the Saturday event.

Benefit for USD 308 Athletics Saturday

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of 4th Avenue and North Main.

As evident by the dated keystone, this building was clearly built in 1889. The first occupant seems to have been the W.H. Benedict Coal, Grocery and Seed Dealer from 1893 to 1900.

Between 1904 and 1906, it was the Northside Coal &amp; Feed Co. by Edwin Yoder.

In 1908, it became the Harry Jones Furnished Rooms.

By 1912, it was divided up even more to include the Plumber, Tailors, and Novelty Works.

Between 1918 and 1941, it became the J.C. O'Donnell Hardware.

Between 1945 and 1958, it was the McCrory-Lyle Hardware. The first photo shows this enterprise in 1955 from a Kodacolor slide.

The second photo shows this business at opening in 1945.

Between 1958 and 1962, it was the Johnson-Lyle Hardware. From 1964-1965, it was the Used Furniture Center.

In 1966, the usage completely changed to become the Eldridge Mattress Factory. This continued to 1987.

In 1988, it became the Sunset Traders Pawn Shop with Steve Boll. The third photo shows the business at 400-402 N. Main today, with Darin Thrash as the business co-owner as well as the property owner. This property has been in the Thrash family for more than 36 years.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Sunset Pawn - Vol. 62

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With spring's official start this week, it's time to pay attention to caring for your pet to prevent fleas and ticks from making their life and your life miserable.

"This year, without being the start of a terrible drought like we've had the last two or three, it looks like we're going to have some moisture and humidity," said Jon Austin, DVM, with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital. "Those factors go into success for hatching and living for fleas and ticks in our environment."

You still might be OK right now, with a drop into the 20s for Friday night, but plans should be underway.

"The ticks will definitely be out as soon as we quit having frost nights," Austin said. "As soon as the nights quit freezing, the ticks will be present. I've got clients that are country folk or are going camping kind of people, that live out in the woods, they're already buying their, in my practice, Bravecto, but there are lots of brands of the new generation of flea and tick control products that you can give your pet."

The treatments can be either oral or topical and they usually last 30 to 90 days before needing another dose.&nbsp;

"A lot of people get grossed out or kind of get the heebie jeebies if they think about their pet having an insect on it," Austin said. "Then, it can get into the house and get on them. That's okay to feel that way, but the real concern is that those insects also bring disease to your pet or could bring disease to you."

Ticks can be especially dangerous for humans, as they can carry Lyme disease,&nbsp;Rocky Mountain spotted fever and others. Check with your veterinarian right away if you do not have any flea and tick preventer at home already.

Austin: Spring means treating for fleas and ticks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Semifinalists for the HutchCC President's position are being interviewed Friday and Saturday.

According to the Presidential hiring timeline at <a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/president-search">HutchCC.edu</a>, the prospective replacements for Dr. Carter File will be narrowed to a group of finalists by the search committee on Monday, March 25, with campus visits scheduled for April 1.&nbsp;

The intent is to approve a new President by May 1 and have an installation on July 1.

The new hire will be the college's eighth president.

Interview process for new HutchCC President continues

As wheat fields green up across Kansas, a pair of&nbsp;<a href="https://sfdzp7cab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001xfc-ceGsXV7nnRoNGMxXqvj-1U5mjshZuxCiX971gg9lrjiDSI37WVQHuB4PZCaVw_hpbPlpHHxiZD4VTTubu1JoCbOpzUh7lLpmk6Lscd_H-ktozaL_X72J5_PqxQ20L6fgp89uuj3ZX_cbSbXdhQDESMCDjrM2gqlfvZk8rIiGjVyvFm7vlageFfSdPHCG&amp;c=OU-ZUyu6qxKMamAyl4ztM8CurGm1IZoQIao1FQ7tyPyD16o6-LkwMQ==&amp;ch=YHjlcJpCb3cI9_D5oW39IffkCAb6V3bseZ-37ge87TtJlBR-bsfWSA==" target="_blank">Wheat Rx</a>&nbsp;seminars in early March delivered expert advice to growers on how to unlock the genetic potential of wheat varieties for their specific geographies and operations and use research-informed methods to produce high-yielding and high-quality wheat.&nbsp;

“Wheat Rx is the Kansas farmer’s prescription for combining best management practices and variety selection for the economical and sustainable production of high-quality winter wheat,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “Informed by the research investments made by Kansas wheat producers through the Kansas Wheat Commission, these seminars are just what the doctor ordered for learning how to maximize profitability through variety selection and practices on the ground.”&nbsp;

The March seminars took place in Dodge City and Wichita. Presenters included a rundown of leading experts from Kansas State University that discussed cover crops and soil health, soil fertility, fungicides and the economics of wheat production.&nbsp;

Gregg Ibendhal and Daniel O’Brien, professors in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, shared the trends and predictions for wheat profitability in Kansas. They noted that machinery costs are still the largest expense category for growers, although that category is getting smaller. It’s no surprise that fertilizer expenses have increased greatly along with interest rates but explained the futures markets have not fully captured the risk of the continued Russian/Ukraine war. They also discussed the current and future supply and demand situation for the world’s major wheat importers and exporters.&nbsp;

Outside of the kernels in the bin, Dr. Romulo Lollato, K-State associate professor of wheat and forage production, discussed the agronomic, ecological and economic benefits of diversifying crop rotations with wheat. He walked through the impacts of simplified crop rotations due to a steep reduction in wheat acreage to food security and biodiversity. Conversely, after a comprehensive review of more than 300 peer-reviewed studies, his team outlined the benefits of adding wheat back into crop rotations, including forage production, dual-purpose use for grazing, weed control, interruption of pest population cycles and other benefits.&nbsp;

Speaking of disease and pest management, Kelsey Andersen Onofre, K-State assistant professor of plant pathology, presented on the management of the major wheat diseases in Kansas. Statewide, diseases like stripe rust, Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV), and scab are responsible for the most yield lost from 2013-2023. She walked through her research into disease management, including optimal timing of applications, the impact of dual applications, the influence of plant population and how well fungicides work in combination with variety resistance.&nbsp;

Moving from above to below ground level, Carlos Pires, a K-State agronomy post-doctoral student, discussed methods to improve soil health. He emphasized the benefits of regenerative ag practices like minimizing disturbance through no-till or minimum-till, maximizing soil cover through practices like cover crops, maximizing biodiversity through a mix of cash and cover crop or an integrated crop-livestock system and maximizing continuous living roots by reducing fallow and increasing cover cropping. He concluded that integrating cover crops into crop rotation will increase soil carbon, the amount of microbes, biological activity and aggregation to retain water, recognizing that these practices take financial investments and time.&nbsp;

The seminar ended with a discussion of fertility management specific to wheat by Dorivar Ruiz Diaz, K-State professor and soil fertility specialist. He discussed the most important nutrients to manage for wheat, including nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, chloride and lime (for low pH soils). He also walked through how growers can manage both yield and quality, including nitrogen volatilization and placement and the interaction of protein with nitrogen management.&nbsp;

The seminars are part of Wheat Rx, a partnership between Kansas Wheat and K-State Research and Extension to disseminate the latest research recommendations for high-yielding and high-quality wheat to Kansas wheat farmers. This effort includes a series of extension publications and educational outreach like the March seminars.

“We’ve learned a lot from the research funded by Kansas wheat farmers on the impact of variety selection and management practices on yield and quality come harvest,” Harries said. “Wheat Rx is our outreach effort to share those results with growers. We can’t control the weather, but these practices and tools are ones farmers can use to make an appreciable difference in their wheat crop.”&nbsp;

Presenters included a rundown of leading experts from Kansas State University that discussed cover crops and soil health, soil fertility, fungicides and the economics of wheat production.&nbsp;Gregg Ibendhal and Daniel O’Brien, professors in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, shared the trends and predictions for wheat profitability in Kansas. They noted that machinery costs are still the largest expense category for growers, although that category is getting smaller. It’s no surprise that fertilizer expenses have increased greatly along with interest rates but explained the futures markets have not fully captured the risk of the continued Russian/Ukraine war. They also discussed the current and future supply and demand situation for the world’s major wheat importers and exporters.&nbsp;Outside of the kernels in the bin, Dr. Romulo Lollato, K-State associate professor of wheat and forage production, discussed the agronomic, ecological and economic benefits of diversifying crop rotations with wheat. He walked through the impacts of simplified crop rotations due to a steep reduction in wheat acreage to food security and biodiversity. Conversely, after a comprehensive review of more than 300 peer-reviewed studies, his team outlined the benefits of adding wheat back into crop rotations, including forage production, dual-purpose use for grazing, weed control, interruption of pest population cycles and other benefits.&nbsp;Speaking of disease and pest management, Kelsey Andersen Onofre, K-State assistant professor of plant pathology, presented on the management of the major wheat diseases in Kansas. Statewide, diseases like stripe rust, Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV), and scab are responsible for the most yield lost from 2013-2023. She walked through her research into disease management, including optimal timing of applications, the impact of dual applications, the influence of plant population and how well fungicides work in combination with variety resistance.&nbsp;Moving from above to below ground level, Carlos Pires, a K-State agronomy post-doctoral student, discussed methods to improve soil health. He emphasized the benefits of regenerative ag practices like minimizing disturbance through no-till or minimum-till, maximizing soil cover through practices like cover crops, maximizing biodiversity through a mix of cash and cover crop or an integrated crop-livestock system and maximizing continuous living roots by reducing fallow and increasing cover cropping. He concluded that integrating cover crops into crop rotation will increase soil carbon, the amount of microbes, biological activity and aggregation to retain water, recognizing that these practices take financial investments and time.&nbsp;The seminar ended with a discussion of fertility management specific to wheat by Dorivar Ruiz Diaz, K-State professor and soil fertility specialist. He discussed the most important nutrients to manage for wheat, including nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, chloride and lime (for low pH soils). He also walked through how growers can manage both yield and quality, including nitrogen volatilization and placement and the interaction of protein with nitrogen management.&nbsp;The seminars are part of Wheat Rx, a partnership between Kansas Wheat and K-State Research and Extension to disseminate the latest research recommendations for high-yielding and high-quality wheat to Kansas wheat farmers. This effort includes a series of extension publications and educational outreach like the March seminars.“We’ve learned a lot from the research funded by Kansas wheat farmers on the impact of variety selection and management practices on yield and quality come harvest,” Harries said. “Wheat Rx is our outreach effort to share those results with growers. NEWTON, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly announced&nbsp;today&nbsp;that GAF, a Standard Industries company and North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, will invest more than $300 million in&nbsp;Newton&nbsp;by constructing&nbsp;a new shingle plant.&nbsp;The estimated 275,000-square-foot facility will create more than 130 high-skilled manufacturing jobs in management, engineering,&nbsp;and operations.

“GAF’s expansion into Kansas once again showcases our status as a national leader in advanced manufacturing,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “The company’s innovative production methods and proven track record of community involvement make it an ideal partner for Newton and the entire state.”&nbsp;

GAF has more than 4,800 employees and operates in 30 locations across the U.S. producing commercial and residential roofing and waterproofing products and services for customers throughout North America. The Kansas Logistics Parks in Newton will be the company’s first location in Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With one in four homes in the United States protected by a GAF roof, this investment enables the company to add residential roofing manufacturing capacity and enhance best-in-class service to customers nationwide.&nbsp;

Construction is expected to begin in June 2024, with production anticipated to begin in 2027. The company expects to reach full production capacity by mid-2029.&nbsp;

“Diversifying our state economy has been a focus of the Kelly-Toland Administration since Day One,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “The career opportunities this will provide for Kansans right now – and for future generations – will help us continue our unprecedented economic growth by keeping more of our young talent right here at home.”&nbsp;

Governor's office announces Newton shingle plant

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The official schedule has not yet been released, but Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson is looking forward to some community meetings to continue the process forward of figuring out the future for USD 308 facilities.

"Our goal is just to have some open community meetings," Johnson said. "Invite the public to see about two and a half years of work, of discussing our facilities in USD 308 and what the vision is for about a 50-person community committee that we put together probably 14, 15 months ago now, that have been talking through our facilities, touring our buildings and having a vision for the future. I think we're always adapting and changing to today's environment."

The hope is to put them in several neighborhoods, so all those interested can attend.

"At least three of those meetings will take place in some elementary schools," Johnson said. "We'll do these meetings in April, so we'll have these dates out here very soon. We'll have a meeting at Lincoln-McCandless to cover Lincoln neighborhood, McCandless neighborhood and probably the Graber neighborhood. I think we'll have one at Morgan Elementary to cover the Wiley and Morgan neighborhood and then we'll have one at Allen Elementary to cover the Faris and Allen neighborhoods. Maybe we host one at the library. We have some people on our committee that have volunteered to host. I know there's a couple groups that would like to have some Spanish-speaking meetings and then, a couple of ours that work at some organizations here in town have said, we would like to host one at one of our locations."

The thought is potentially to repurpose some buildings to allow for a single pre-K center and to restructure so that there is a single middle school building for 6th, 7th and 8th grades, but the specifics on where and how are still to be worked out.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department's Candace Davidson and Julie Kallas taught the American Heart Association's Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED class Tuesday morning in the Veterans Room at the Reno County Courthouse. 

 AHA's Heartsaver is a class to train  anyone with little or no medical training to provide first aid, CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner.

Reno County employees took the course to make sure they knew how to respond in case of an emergency.

County staff learn CPR, AED use

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair plans to show Peter Rabbit as a part of the Midway Movie Series on March 23 at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

An Easter egg hunt will take place at on the fairgrounds at Gottschalk Park on March 23 at 4 p.m. Children in Pre-K-4th grade can participate in the hunt.

Dusek Concessions and Donuts in Paradise Food Truck will be on site for the movie night. Carrie's Beer Garden will be open from 8-11 p.m. and will host the Llew Brown Band.&nbsp; The Ye Old Mill plans to offer $4 rides from 4-9 p.m. March 23, weather permitting.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System has opened applications for the 2024-2025 year for&nbsp;ten full-ride scholarships for second year nursing students and five full-ride scholarships for first year nursing students.

Applications are due by April 1, under the following conditions:

Student must have full-time enrollment in a Kansas nursing program.

Funds must be used for tuition, books, and other school-related expenses.

Upon education completion, scholarship winners will be employed at Hutchinson Regional Healthcare Systems. First-year students will commit to a 3-year residency and second-year students will commit to an 18-month residency.

Once a completed application is received, we will verify your GPA, contact references, and applicable instructors.

Applicant winners will be selected and contacted by the end of May. Funds will be paid to your enrolled college administration office.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Winfield Correctional Facility (WCF) resident Michael Lynn Youngblood died Tuesday, March 19, 2024. He collapsed while working with a crew picking up trash along a highway near Wichita. EMS was called to administer life-saving measures. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy and is currently under investigation.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Youngblood, 59, was serving a 56-month sentence of Drug Possession with intent to distribute heroin or methamphetamine in McPherson County, Kansas.

The Winfield Correctional Facility (WCF) has a capacity of&nbsp;874 minimum-security adult male residents.&nbsp;It is located on the north side of the city of Winfield at the site of the&nbsp;former Winfield State Hospital&nbsp;and Training Center. WCF serves a&nbsp;re-entry function designed to provide a smooth transition from an institutional setting to the community for residents expected to be soon paroled.

Inmate serving McPherson County sentence dies in KDOC custody

RENO COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Ford F150 driven by&nbsp;Eric Mickel&nbsp;Hoffman, 69, Sterling, was northbound on Kansas 14 just north of 56th Avenue passing a semi.

The pickup struck a southbound 2007 Kia Rio driven by Steven John&nbsp;Payton, 25, Alden, head-on.

EMS transported Hoffman and Payton to Hutchison Regional Medical Center. Hoffman was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

McPherson County getting BearCat

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson Board of Education (BOE) will retire discussions for a four-day school week until 2026.&nbsp;There was a lengthy discussion on the concept on Monday, March 18.

"If we are not all on board with it, I don't think it's something we should do," said board vice-president Jay Mitzner.&nbsp;

BOE member Luke Herren said some concerns he has with a four-day school week is food insecurity and one less day for a "safe place" for kids to go to.&nbsp;

"I think we got enough on our plate," Herren said. "I just don't think the return is worth the gamble."&nbsp;

President Brent Engelland expressed concerns for decreased enrollment.&nbsp;

"I know for positive that we could lose 10 from this school," Engelland said. "That's one teacher's salary."&nbsp;

Stephanie Tucker, another BOE member, said she was torn on her thoughts to move forward with a change in the school week.&nbsp;

"I was really prepared to vote for four day week but then I'm really torn because I hear through the rumor mill that 1o might leave."

Gordon Roth was in favor of moving forward with a shorter school week. Roth said he heard positive insight from an educator in the USD 205 Bluestem district who makes about a 40 minute drive to work every day.&nbsp;

"I'm in favor of waiting another year or two but I don't think it should die," Roth said.&nbsp;

The presentation also included Survey data about the concept.&nbsp;

There were 78 responses for the survey question "Would you be open to working a four-day week?"&nbsp;Overall, 67.9% said yes, 12.8% said no and 19.2% said maybe.

There were 36 total elementary teacher responses from South Hutchinson Elementary and Nickerson Elementary.&nbsp; Of those teachers, 19 said yes and 8 said no. Reno Valley Middle School had 14 teachers respond. There were 9 yeses, 1 no and four maybes. 

From Nickerson High School, 28 teachers responded to the survey. The high school response had 25 yeses, 1 no and 2 maybes.&nbsp;

Nightingale strongly encouraged the board to come up with a solution at the meeting which ultimately led to the motion to hold off until 2026.&nbsp;

USD 309's next BOE meeting is on April 15 at 7 p.m. at the district office.&nbsp;

 </figure>EMMIE BOESE&nbsp; Hutch PostSOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson Board of Education (BOE) will retire discussions for a four-day school week until 2026.&nbsp;There was a lengthy discussion on the concept on Monday, March 18."If we are not all on board with it, I don't think it's something we should do," said board vice-president Jay Mitzner.&nbsp;BOE member Luke Herren said some concerns he has with a four-day school week is food insecurity and one less day for a "safe place" for kids to go to.&nbsp;"I think we got enough on our plate," Herren said. "I just don't think the return is worth the gamble."&nbsp;President Brent Engelland expressed concerns for decreased enrollment.&nbsp;"I know for positive that we could lose 10 from this school," Engelland said. "That's one teacher's salary."&nbsp;Stephanie Tucker, another BOE member, said she was torn on her thoughts to move forward with a change in the school week.&nbsp;"I was really prepared to vote for four day week but then I'm really torn because I hear through the rumor mill that 1o might leave."Gordon Roth was in favor of moving forward with a shorter school week. TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF)&nbsp; on Tuesday announced a new approach to improving the health, social, and economic outcomes of the next generation. By utilizing $11.5 million of the agency’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding, DCF is launching 2Gen Kansas.

Ten organizations will receive funding.

“We believe this approach will build family well-being by intentionally and simultaneously working with children and the adults in their lives,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard. “This support will increase opportunities for families to become stable, connected and empower them to progress towards their personal, educational and career goals.”

The agencies will serve as an access point by assisting families in applying for programs such as Food Assistance, also known as SNAP, USDA Commodity Programs, Child Care Assistance, Low Income Energy Assistance Program, and Vocational Rehabilitation Services. They will be required to participate in ongoing training and collaborative meetings and recommend one parent being served by their organizations to serve on a statewide 2Gen parent advisory council.

“It will result in coordinated access to systems and structures that are necessary for families to thrive economically and socially,” she continued.

The organization will track outcomes for children and caregivers simultaneously, as well as goals focusing on the entire family; to offer comprehensive wrap-around services designed to empower families to make progress towards eliminating the cycle of poverty. Youth will receive mentoring and leadership skills training to propel them forward, while parents will receive parent training, prosocial skills, and assistance with job seeking. The entire family will receive mental health services, education in communication and boundaries, and mentoring support.Kansas Alliance of Boys &amp; Girls Clubs, BGC Statewide 2Gen Project: The Alliance will provide subgrants to 13 partner Boys &amp; Girls Clubs who will, together with 27 partner organizations, expand opportunities for low-income children and families to increase their economic stability, make progress on their educational goals, deepen their social connections, and improve their health and well-being. The Alliance will focus on the Child-Parent approach. Performance measures for youth include on-time grade progression, career exploration, financial literacy, improved social adjustment, and social-emotional skills.
