LINDSBORG, Kan. — Bethany College announced Friday the appointment of Hayley Samford as the new Director of Alumni Development &amp; Engagement. In this role, Samford will lead efforts to strengthen connections with Bethany College alumni and foster a vibrant and engaged alumni community.

With a wealth of experience in marketing, community engagement, and nonprofit leadership, Samford brings a unique skill set to Bethany College. Before joining Bethany College, Samford served as the Marketing and Corporate Engagement Manager at Salina Family Healthcare Center, where she played a crucial role in launching the company's new brand and overseeing marketing initiatives. She also brings extensive experience in nonprofit management, having served as the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina.

"We are thrilled to welcome Hayley Samford to the Bethany College family as our new Director of Alumni Development &amp; Engagement," said Interim President of Bethany College, Steve Eckman. RENO COUNTY — The Week of the Young Child is April 15-20 and it is full of events in Hutchinson for those with little ones.

The events begin on Monday, April 15 at Cosmosphere, with free admission to the Hall of Space Museum, Cosmokids, the Justice Planetarium and Dr. Goddard's Lab from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.&nbsp;

The Reno County Infant-Toddler Program will host a playgroup on Monday evening, April 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Becker Park in Buhler. Explore the park, blow bubbles and color with chalk at Ave. A and Buhler Road.

Tuesday, April 16 has an Open House at the Early Education Center at 303 East Bigger from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

There will also be a special storytelling time at the Hutchinson Public Library from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16.

Wednesday, April 17 will have the Parents as Teachers playgroups from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at 200 East Sherman for kids birth to 5 and their families.

There will be a special event to learn all about owls at the Dillon Nature Center from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17. The event is free.

An outside playgroup will be going on in Haven on Thursday, April 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Engweiler Park.&nbsp;Explore the park, blow bubbles and color with chalk on North Salina Ave.&nbsp;

Thursday, April 18 has an Open House at the Early Education Center at 303 East Bigger from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

At the Reno County Museum on Friday, April 19 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 100 South Walnut, there will be a historic toy exhibit, art activities and time in the children's area, the Oodleplex.

Saturday, April 20 the movie The Little Mermaid will be playing at the Fox Theatre in Hutchinson for free at 2 p.m., or you can go out to the Hutchinson Zoo from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to explore the prairie dog tunnel, dinosaur dig, reptile and amphibian exhibit and enjoy a free train ride on the Prairie Thunder railroad.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff's Office said that they and the Hutchinson Police Department have worked together on a case involving fentanyl distribution for the last two months that resulted in arrests this week.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, April 10,&nbsp;a traffic stop was made on a vehicle occupied by Andrew Ward and Realiti Dawn Courson.  A search of the vehicle was completed, and a warrant was obtained for Ward's residence in Hutchinson. 

  Found during the search were the following items: fentanyl pills, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and paraphernalia items for distribution and consumption. 

Both individuals were arrested for distribution of fentanyl, possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, and possession of paraphernalia to ingest.

The person(s) involved have not yet been convicted of a crime and are presumed innocent. The presumption of innocence shall continue until such time that the person(s) accused may be found guilty by a court of law. Charges may be amended at the discretion of the District Attorney and Court.

Traffic stop results in drug arrests

A herd of goats brought in to clean up brush on City-owned industrial land is now being removed for being contrary to the City’s animal control ordinance.

Newton&nbsp;<a href="https://newtonkansas.citycode.net/index.html#!chapterIiiAnimalsAndFowl" target="_blank">City Code</a>&nbsp;prohibits the harboring of livestock such as goats. City maintenance staff thought of the goats as a short-term contracted service rather than long-term residents, but City legal staff have advised that is not an exception to code.

Staff have been directed to work with the grazing company to remove the goats as soon as possible. They originally were expected to remain through the end of April.

The purpose of the goat grazing was to clear brush and saplings from the undeveloped property. City staff have burned the area every couple of years but hoped the goats would be more effective in keeping down saplings and be a more eco-friendly and cost-effective option.

“We tried this with the best intentions on a property in a non-residential setting,” said City Manager Daniela Rivas. “We wanted to get the job done in a better way and save some taxpayer dollars. We’re so sorry we put the cart before the goat.”

In the future, the City may look at adding a provision to the animal control ordinance allowing for grazing on certain types of property for vegetation management. The original story is below...

NEWTON, Kan. — About 190 yearling goats have been released on City-owned industrial land to help clean up saplings and brush.

The goats, from Restoration Grazing LLC in Beaumont, are grazing about 24 acres of land between Southeast Ninth and Southeast 12th Streets in the Kansas Logistics Park. The land is currently optioned by K&amp;O Railroad.

City Parks staff have burned the area every couple of years to control the growth but hope the goats may be more effective in keeping down saplings. The goats are a more eco-friendly option than using heavy equipment and may also be more cost-effective.

The City is paying Restoration Grazing $2,000 to use the goats through the end of April. It’s a pilot program that could be used on other City property if it’s found to be effective.&nbsp;

A portable electric fence has been placed to keep the goats in and predators out. Residents are welcome to come out to see the goats but shouldn’t try to enter the area or pet them.

Restoration Grazing has previously done several goat grazing projects with the City of Wichita.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;David “Tate” Logan, 31 of Hutchinson, made his first appearance at the Reno County Courthouse Friday morning on a second degree murder charge.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An arrest was made connected with a death that took place March 30 in Hutchinson.

According to a release from the Hutchinson Police Department, on March 30th, 2024, at 1:40 a.m., officers with Hutchinson Police Department responded to the 400 block of West 2nd Ave for an unresponsive 53-year-old male from Hutchinson. The male was identified as Lawrence “Larry” Coleman.

Reno County EMS and Hutchinson Fire Department responded to treat Mr. Coleman; however, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. During the investigation, detectives discovered Mr. Coleman had been involved in a fight prior to his death. On April 9th, 2024, David “Tate” Logan, 31 of Hutchinson, was arrested for Second Degree Murder.

Hutchinson man makes first appearance on murder charge

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Sandy Green started her nonprofit Guitarists for Good eight years ago. The Hutchinson native didn't learn how to play the guitar until she was an adult.&nbsp;

Green said her family moved away including her granddaughter, which left her with feelings of sadness. She said the day she got her first guitar, she played it for nine hours straight.&nbsp;

"I thought I'd buy a guitar and see if that would get me to a place of even mindedness," Green said. "I did. I got the guitar and I played that over the weekend."

The nonprofit gives away guitars to Oxford Houses in Hutchinson and Wichita, New Beginnings Inc. and other children's homes and shelters. Guitarists for Good has also given away keyboards and a trumpet. Green said she and another Hutchinson native Tara Esguerra, placed 35 instruments in every single Oxford House in Wichita last year.&nbsp;

"I would say, our aim is to nurture peace of mind through gifts of music," Green said. "We know that people are at their own intersection. In homeless shelters. In places that serve folks who are homeless and we hope that when we make an instrument available in one of these situations, they can check out that guitar. They can calm the chaos in their minds because they remember that they can play the guitar."&nbsp;

Green's idea to start Guitarists for Good stems from an introduction to Wayne's guitar meetup community. She told the other members of the group "we should start something."&nbsp;

"I had a campfire in my backyard and a little fundraiser on my own to raise enough money for a guitar," Green said. "I raised $500 and got five guitars and needed to kind of take action. From that group who came that night, by the next week we were already brainstorming and that's kind of how Guitarists for Good was born."&nbsp;

Green said one of her favorite memories from Guitarists for Good is about a child who discovered a donated guitar from the nonprofit at a youth shelter.&nbsp;

"She found the instruments and she strummed the guitar all night," Green said. "She did not know how to play it. She was just a little girl. She crawled in bed with the instrument and the worker said I just didn't want to take it away from her because it was so soothing."

Green currently resides in North Carolina and runs Guitarists for Good from her home. 

<a href="https://www.guitaristsforgood.org/">According to the nonprofit's website, Guitarists for Good is a volunteer non-profit organization that shares its love of music by giving away guitars with a focus on serving the temporality homeless in communities. </a>

The organization has donated to 19 different states and 160 organizations. In total, 466 instruments and cases have been donated with a value of up to $73,276.&nbsp;

Hutch native uses guitars to impact communities

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) announced this week that 92 Kansas high school seniors have earned the recognition as 2024 Kansas Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholars.

The announcement was made during the Kansas State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 9.

The Kansas CTE Scholar program is an opportunity to recognize well-rounded, outstanding CTE students who are finishing their senior year of high school. The first Kansas CTE Scholars were named in 2017.

To be named a CTE Scholar, a student must be a high school senior and meet the following criteria:

Have completed (or upon successful completion of current course enrollment) a minimum of three CTE credits with at least two of the three credits above introductory level. Earned credits must be in one pathway.

Have a CTE grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or better in CTE coursework.

Be involved in civic engagement leadership, which refers to a student selecting an issue of concern and providing leadership through project-based actions to improve the community, state or nation; or have a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer experience. A letter of validation is required for civic engagement leadership, and documentation of 100 hours with an adult signature is required for community service.

Have a career vision summary statement that is a short reflection of a candidate’s personal career vision and future plans. A maximum of 175 words is allowed.

A minimum of one of the following technical skill attainment options must be earned and verified:

Earned an end of pathway (aligned with pathway selected) assessment/certiﬁcation for completer status (industry- recognized certiﬁcation or a passing score on a third-party, end-of- pathway assessment) recorded on the K-PAC (Kansas Pathway Assessments, Credentials or Certiﬁcations) columns eight (8) and nine (9).

Earned an Excel in CTE Qualifying Recognized Credential aligned to the Pathway selected. 

Earned nine (9) + college hours leading to completion of a certiﬁcate, or post-secondary program aligned to the Pathway's Program of Study that was selected.

Completed a high-quality work-based learning career preparation experience, Kansas Work-Based Learning Continuum, in the Pathway selected deﬁned in Kansas Work-Based Learning: Personalized Learning Plan Guidance Document (ksde.org).

CTE scholars receive a commemorative pin, special certificate, graduation honor cord and statewide recognition.

KSDE announces CTE scholars

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Every year, thousands lose their lives on America’s roadways because a driver diverted their attention away from their driving.&nbsp;

"Mobile phones are the obvious top contender, in terms of most distracting element while you are driving," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We all see it. We all probably take a look at our phone or do something on our phone while we're driving, but there's also eating and drinking, talking with passengers in your vehicle, distractions outside the vehicle. There's so many different things that can take your focus off of driving."

April marks National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

"Researchers found that, while only two seconds of distraction doubles the crash risk, it takes a driver 40 seconds to program a navigation system using in-vehicle technology," Steward said. "Even if your going 25 miles an hour, a driver can travel the length of four football fields during the time it takes to enter a destination on a navigation screen."

About 13% of distraction-related crashes every year involve confirmed use of a smartphone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"Federal government crash statistics from 2022, the latest ones available, there were 3,300 people killed and an additional 289,000 people injured in crashes involving distracted drivers."

In Kansas, preliminary 2023 data shows 102 people died, and more than 450 people were injured in crashes due to distracted driving.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center announced Wednesday the live music acts for the Hutchinson Art Fair, which will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 9:00 a.m.&nbsp; to 4:00 p.m. at the Sunflower South Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

Color Green is a Bluegrass/Gospel group based in the Hutchinson/Yoder, KS area, and have been together for about two years. The five members bring many years of musical history into the group. Although they’ve cut out their teeth on Bluegrass &amp; Gospel music, other genres have been added — because they’re too good to pass up! They have been playing locally at craft showed, churches and about wherever anyone will listen!

Justin Riggs is a singer-songwriter from Hutchinson, KS who plays original country and folk tunes. He has performed at the Reno County Farmer’s Market and Metropolitan Coffee as well as in various venues across the great Sunflower State. He released his debut album Hawk | Bison | Sun in February 2022.

Fifty Years Late is returning to the Hutchinson Art Fair stage! Originally formed in 1957 by two Oxford, KS high school students, the group broke up in 1961 as they headed off to college and reformed in 2011 after the band members entered retirement. The trio plays early rock 'n' roll, performing in the style of legendary 1950s and 1960s acts such as the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Johnny Rivers and more!&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan.  — The monthly Entrepreneurship Connections event with StartUp Hutch is coming up Tuesday, April 16.

Go prepared for an evening filled with networking, collaboration, and insightful discussions. The featured guest speaker, Sarah Diamond of Diamond Grants and Consulting, will be sharing her expertise in grant writing, offering valuable insights and advice to entrepreneurs in Reno County.

Diamond featured at StartUp Hutch event

LINDSBORG, Kan. — The Bethany College Criminal Justice Department recently hosted a tabletop exercise aimed at enhancing preparedness for an active threat scenario on the college campus. The event, which took place on April 5, saw participation from various stakeholders including college representatives, Lindsborg city officials, and key figures from surrounding areas such as Ellsworth County, McPherson County, Bethany Home, Smoky Valley USD400, and the Lindsborg Community Hospital.

The tabletop exercise, based on a scenario provided by the national Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and tailored to local conditions, provided participants with valuable insights into responding to emergency situations effectively. Through collaborative efforts, attendees not only gained crucial information but also established stronger connections that will facilitate seamless communication and cooperation in the event of a real emergency.

Nearly three dozen participants were involved in the four-hour exercise, with coordination and preparation spearheaded by criminal justice students enrolled in the upper-level terrorism/anti-terrorism class. The leadership of Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Laura Hultquist and Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Rande Repp played a pivotal role in the success of the event.

Commenting on the exercise, Tessa Peters, Dean of Students at Bethany College, emphasized the institution's commitment to ensuring the well-being of its students. She stated, "The safety of our students is paramount to everything we do at Bethany College. The tabletop exercise served as a pivotal moment for our faculty and staff to come together, learn, and collaborate with our community partners in addressing potential threats. By participating in this exercise, we not only enhanced our preparedness but also strengthened the bonds that will facilitate seamless coordination during times of crisis. The commitment shown by everyone involved underscores our collective dedication to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all members of the Bethany College community."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is pleased to announce the selection of Enrico Villegas as the new city manager, pending contract approval by the city council at its meeting on Tuesday, April 16.

Mr. Villegas brings a wealth of experience in municipal management and infrastructure development to his new role. As the assistant city manager/public works and IT director for the City of Warrensburg, Missouri, and previously as a project manager for the City of Lawrence, Kansas, he has led numerous innovative projects focusing on road reconstruction, sewer upgrades and broadband initiatives. His commitment to collaboration, efficiency and community engagement has consistently delivered results.

"I look forward to building strong relationships with community leaders and residents," Mr. Villegas said. "My family and I were impressed by the diversity of institutions and events that take place in Hutchinson. I am eager to partner with the council, staff and community stakeholders to make Hutchinson a place where all want to live, work and play."

Mayor Greg Fast expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment.

"I am excited to begin this new chapter for the City of Hutchinson," Fast said. "Mr. Villegas brings so much experience and potential to this role. I look forward to welcoming Enrico, Sarah and their family. They will be a great addition to our community."
