BUHLER, Kan.&nbsp;—&nbsp;The USD 313 Buhler Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday night for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) through GRP Wegman of the Greenbush Purchasing Cooperative for a cost&nbsp; analysis to put solar panels on five of the district's buildings.

"Step one is an analysis of what those cost would be and what what's projected to be saved," Superintendent Cindy Couchman said. "Also part of that is us agreeing to send our energy bills for them to use as evaluations on that. Then they will come and then they will present to us what those savings and costs are and at that time that's when you guys (BOE) would vote to weather or not to move forward with it on how many buildings, one ,two three, four or all five  of them."&nbsp;

GRP Wegman is a construction company that was interviewed by the <a href="https://www.greenbush.org/about/what-is-greenbush/">Greenbush Purchasing Cooperative.</a>

"They are sort of acting like our construction manager for the solar panels," Couchman said. "They would then send out bids and then try to get three bids for the solar panels so places in our area could bid on that for installing them they become sort of a project manager. We don't have to interview them because they've already interviewed through the Greenbush Purchasing Coop and so they would handle the grant application. They would handle RFP's for the solar panels, they would oversee the installation. They would even do the RFP's for banking services, and all of that so there are some advantages to using them."

Couchman reported that the district will not make payments on the solar panels until the panels are installed.&nbsp;

Buhler BOE votes for first step in solar panel process 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On April 18, a significant break occurred in the 24-inch waterline under Severance Street, between 17th and 23rd Avenues. Immediate repair efforts included the installation of a clamp on the damaged section. Unfortunately, the initial clamp was not able to completely seal the leak. As crews were excavating for the installation of the larger repair, significant pipeline damage was discovered requiring the replacement of 250 feet of 24-inch waterline.

As a result of the ongoing repair work, Severance Street will remain closed. The City is currently in the process of selecting a contractor for the repair and work is anticipated to start within the next two weeks.

The City will provide an update as soon as the contractor establishes a repair timeline. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and greatly appreciate the community's patience and understanding during this period.

Severance still closed; work to start within 2 weeks

HUTCHINSON, Kan.  — My 93-1 and Hutchinson Animal Shelter hosted its first Adopt-A-Pet event for 2024. A total of four out of 10 dogs were adopted in front of Eagle Media Center on Saturday.&nbsp;

Each dog's adoption fee was set for $50 on Saturday.&nbsp;

​Each event varies on how many dogs are available for adoption. The next Adopt-A-Pet event is on Saturday, June 11 from 9-11 a.m.

According to Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman, the MOU is an agreement to move forward with an energy analysis and cost for installing solar panels at Buhler Grade, Buhler High, Union Valley and Prairie Hills Middle School. 

 Utilizing incentives such as Investment Tax Credits, American Made Tax Credits, and the Renew America Schools, the costs are significantly offset to install and utilize solar panels. 

 The MOU is with GRP Wegman and Greenbush Purchasing Cooperative.

Public Works announces High Point Road closed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Respected Community Member Richard Winger announced Monday that he has
filed for Reno County Commissioner in District 4. 

 Winger shared, “I
have contemplated serving my community as an elected official for
many years.  I have received nothing but continued encouragement and
support these past few months, so I decided the time was right for me
to run.” 

 Winger is excited for this opportunity and will focus on
problem solving and building relationships with fellow commissioners
and departments. 

 Winger continued, “People become frustrated when
they feel those representing them won’t listen or have a personal
agenda to push.  I have no agenda except to serve with humility,
being responsive to my community, and making sure our county is the
best it can be.” 

 Winger has been a resident of Hutchinson for 50
years.  He has been married to his wife, Kathy, for 26 years. 
Together they have 4 grown children and 13 grandchildren.

Winger files for Reno County Commission

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp; — Jon Austin, DVM with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital talked to Hutch Post about a special way that you can commemorate your pet after they have died.

"It's part of the change of dynamic with families, I guess," Austin said. "More people live in town, don't have property, don't have a place where they can bury their pet's remains. Obviously, veterinarians have begun to offer cremation services. That's something we do, several practices in town offer those."

The next thought after that is what to do with the ashes of the pet?&nbsp;

"Some people want those back," Austin said. "Some people don't. The folks who get them back, we send them home in a nice little container. I have people who want to buy an urn, or buy a wood box to keep those. Everybody's idea of what to do with them is different."

Austin has an interesting idea that he did with one of his pets.

"I've been glass blowing," Austin said. "There's a neat thing you can do with your pet's remains, or with people's remains, for that matter. You can make what they call a memorial piece. With glass blowing, you can put the ashes into glass when it's hot and kind of have some of that there. I've made big, kind of heavy orbs that would be on a desk or a shelf. You can use color in those, as well. The ash, really, it's kind of amazing how it looks in clear glass. I like the clear ones, myself, but, you can do that both with glass blowing and glass fusing. Fusing is like 1500 degrees, glass blowing is like 2100 degrees. You put the glass around the ashes. You put the ashes inside it. It's something different people have as an option, as a way to remember their pet."

Hutchinson vet doing special work to commemorate pets

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The postal carriers in Hutchinson brought in&nbsp; 18,200 pounds of food in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday.

That is an almost identical number to 2023 through Saturday. They also received $110 in monetary donations.

Josh Estrella with the food drive says that if you forgot to put your food out before Saturday, they will still pick up all food placed by the mailboxes over the next week.

Stamp Out Hunger food drive brings in tons again

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police will be participating in the annual Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign from May 19 to June 2.

Every day we make hundreds of choices. The easiest one should be wearing your seat belt.

While it is a fact that seat belts save lives, many still make the choice to not buckle up. In the Click It or Ticket campaign, while all traffic laws will be enforced, the primary focus will be on the adult seat belt and child safety laws.

During Click It or Ticket, drivers will be met with extra enforcement. Police will be on the lookout for the unrestrained drivers, passengers and children traveling Hutchinson roads.&nbsp;

According to Chief Brice Burlie, "Your seatbelt could be what saves you and those riding with you. Insist that everyone in the vehicle is restrained on every trip."

"I also want people to know that in the interest of saving lives, the Hutchinson Police Department is committed to ticketing and educating the violators of adult seat belt and child safety laws, as well as other traffic infractions, because we want you to be as safe as possible on your travels."

Honor Flight Car Show next month

NEWTON, Kan. — The Newton City Commission, USD 373 Board of Education, and Newton Recreation Commission will hold a joint public work session at 5 p.m. May 14 at the Meridian Center to hear about a proposal for improvements to Themian Park.&nbsp;

A citizen group is fundraising for improvements like ballfields, a soccer field, basketball courts, pickleball courts, a public restroom, and a picnic shelter. HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; There is a special USD 308 Board of Education meeting on Monday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. for a presentation by the Facility Steering Committee. 

The meeting will be held at Midtown at 200 E. Sherman.

The Facility Steering Committee has been meeting for over a year and there have been a series of public meetings to inform about possible options for a potential bond issue in the district.

The committee found two key factors that they believe would be helpful for USD 308 which are the need to streamline and strengthen the early childhood education process and the need to streamline and strengthen middle school transitions and environment. The proposed solution is to create a dedicated early education center in the district and one dedicated location for a middle school. The middle school would include grades 6-8. The committee found that one early childhood education center will provide a seamless transition to kindergarten and barriers to childhood development that could be spotted early.

A few positive factors to creating a 6-8 middle school the committee found is more space for STEM, computer and music classrooms in the elementary schools. Currently, sixth graders are a part of the elementary schools in Hutchinson and there are two separate buildings for seventh and eighth grade. The committee said it would also reduce maintenance cost to have one middle school building and more opportunities for stronger relationships between staff and students.

The mill rate in the Hutchinson school district for Bond and Interest is set at 10.380.  Assistant Superintendent of Finance Sheila Meggers said to generate $80 million dollars for a bond issue, the district would need to ask for more four mills in taxes on an election ballot. A mill rate of 1 means you pay $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of your property's assessed value. Meggers told Hutch Post that the district owes 27 million dollars owed in previous bonds.

In addition to the middle school and Pre-K projects, a portion of a potential larger bond issue could also go towards the following elementary school projects in USD 308:&nbsp;

The middle school would be about $78.5 million if built new and the Pre-K center would be about $17.6 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The options presented to the board will be for bond issues between $60 million and $120 million depending on how much of the work they decide to put in front of the voters.

Johnson said the board can put out a special bond election in September, put the ballot question on the federal and national election ballot in November or put out a special bond election next Spring.&nbsp;

In order to have a bond vote this fall, the Board needs to make decisions on what the scope of that proposal would be. This meeting can help them in that process.

USD 308 facilities meeting Monday

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Pretty Prairie USD 311 Superintendent Ashley Anderson told Hutch Post that the windows for the buildings aren't in yet.

"I just talked with Everett from Sturgeon Glass this week," Anderson said. "We've got a pretty good plan moving forward. He just received an update from Manko on the production of the windows, so we are set to get those installed as soon as school is out."

Groundbreaking on the gym will happen over the summer.

"We've got all the subcontractors assigned for that," Anderson said. "That's going to be pretty real, pretty quick. We don't have official dates. We know June's going to be pretty intense. We're just trying right now, just to make it through the end of the school year and then get all these classrooms cleared and ready to go for windows and for the gym."

The intent is to have students help with giving the public updates on the project over the summer.

RENO COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 9 a.m. Saturday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Toyota Tacoma driven by&nbsp; Eddie E.&nbsp; Pinkley, 81, Kingman, failed to yield right of way at a posted stop sign and collided with a southbound 2022 GMC Sierra driven by Nicholas Robert Crockett, 46, South Hutchinson, at the intersection of Kansas 14 and U.S. 50 East Junction.

&nbsp;EMS transported Pinkley and a passenger in the Toyota, Jerry A.&nbsp;Pinkley, 80, Kingman, to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Crockett was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kingman couple hospitalized after pickups collide

RENO COUNTY —Hutchinson Correctional Facility inmate Scott Edward Wood, 49, died Friday, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections. 

He was found unresponsive in his cell Friday afternoon. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. Wood was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff. 

Wood was serving a 50-month sentence for convictions of drug possession and aggravated escape committed in Sedgwick County, Kansas. He had ten previous convictions including for indecent liberties with a child, burglary and theft, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Inmate serving time on drug conviction dies in Hutch Correctional Facility

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive with the Post Office is back this Saturday, May 11.

"They like to get some canned tuna, vegetables, fruit, cereals, just things you'd normally buy on a weekly basis at the store," said carrier Josh Estrella.

The official date is Saturday, but they'll still pick up early next week.

"This will be my 18th food drive," Estrella said. "Each year, we try to increase the amount of food we bring in. There's a great need in our community. It is the single largest food drive, not only here in Reno County, but in America."

Everyone pitches in to get the food to the food bank. In a typical year, they receive around 20,000 pounds of food.

"If you're not going to be home, you can set it out any day next week," Estrella said. "We'll be sure to get it down to the food bank."

They can also take monetary donations either cash in an envelope or a check as long as its clearly marked for the Reno County Food Bank.

They have been playing locally at craft showed, churches and about wherever anyone will listen!

He has performed at the Reno County Farmer’s Market and Metropolitan Coffee as well as in various venues across the great Sunflower State. With twenty-nine years of teaching experience in public schools, Martha taught in seven different school districts in Kansas, including both Inman and Buhler.After retiring from public schools, Martha taught part-time for seven years at Southwestern College in Winfield and continues to teach at Winfield Arts &amp; Humanities Council.Martha has served as an art judge for Winfield’s Art in the Park Festival, twice at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival, and the Kansas State Fair professional Art Exhibition.
