MANHATTAN, Kan. — Nearly 400 Farm Bureau members of Kansas on Monday wrapped up business for their farm organization during Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) 106th annual meeting.

The policies adopted will now become the organization’s road map for the 2025 legislative session. Topics of discussion included water, animal health and energy, among other issues.

Wilson County farmer Joe Newland was reelected as president. Others elected to the board of directors include:

Rep. Tracey Mann, KFB staff and American Farm Bureau Federation staff provided updates on the 2024 election and the outlook for the coming year. Other activities included a host of agriculture-related workshops and speakers, including a keynote discussion between Diane Sullivan, co-founder of Equitable Spaces, and Brian Klippenstein, a previous executive director of Protect the Harvest and senior advisor to Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, about the importance of freedom to operate on farms and ranches.

County Farm Bureaus and volunteers were recognized for their 2024 achievements. Also, Kansas Farm Bureau staff provided policy updates on issues important to agriculture.

A silent auction sponsored by the Women’s Leadership Committee raised more $6,000 for mental health resources.

The KFB Foundation for Agriculture Fundraiser “A Night in Vegas” raised more than $21,000, which benefits the End Hunger campaign.

Jeff Dunham to perform at the 2025 Kansas State Fair​

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Greater Wichita YMCA today announced an exciting new phase of the Hutchinson YMCA capital campaign with the receipt of a generous $2 million challenge grant from the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation. The gift will support the construction of the new 75,000-square-foot Hutchinson Y branch, which will be located on land near the intersection of 20th Street and Lorraine that was donated to the Y through a partnership with Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System.

The Mabee Foundation challenge grant is contingent upon the Y raising an additional $7 million for the estimated $30 million capital campaign by October 2025. 

“We are incredibly grateful to receive this grant from the Mabee Foundation, which only reinforces how important this project is to our community,” said Mike Folks, Hutchinson YMCA Board Chair. “We look forward to continuing the momentum by fulfilling the challenge grant requirements.”

Since its formation in 1948, the Mabee Foundation has made grants totaling over $1.6 billion for capital expenditures and the purchase of major medical equipment. The Mabee Foundation exclusively funds projects located in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas.

“John and Lottie Mabee believed in creating opportunities for individuals to improve their lives and mobilizing entire communities around worthy causes. The Greater Wichita YMCA embodies those ideals,” said Michael Goeke, Mabee Foundation Executive Director. “We are honored to assist the Y in making a profound impact in the lives of every Hutchinson-area resident for years to come through the construction of a new Hutchinson YMCA facility.”

The planned Hutchinson YMCA will include a first-class destination aquatics center, indoor track, gymnasium, expanded gymnastics center, fitness center with studios, community room, additional places for families to connect and programs that provide safe spaces for youth. This initial phase allows for future development to continue to transform the 9.9 acres of land into a health and wellness destination.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — South Hutchinson's first annual UTV event for Christmas had 33 side-by-sides take to the streets on Saturday.

Matt Mock with the City of South Hutchinson told Hutch Post that he was pleased with the turnout, and that they are moving the event up a couple of weeks next year to Nov. 22, 2025.

He said 100 toys were donated for the District Attorney's Toy Drive and half a truckload of food was donated to benefit the food bank in South Hutchinson.&nbsp;

South Hutch UTV event strong in first year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 18 emergency incidents on Sunday that included two significant fires. Just after noon yesterday, the department was called for a car fire on Osborne and Plum. First arriving units found a vehicle and camper involved with heavy fire and upgraded the alarm to a structure fire response. 

Additionally, crews worked to save a large garage just 4 feet away from main fire. Fire crews were able to save the garage, however the vehicle and camper were lost in the fire. No injuries were reported.

Then, around 1 a.m. Monday, Hutchinson Fire was called out for a structure fire on south Lorraine street. This was a mutual aid call with fire District 8. Thick fog at that time made it difficult for the fire unit to get there. First arriving units found fire venting from the&nbsp;roof in a residential home. Crews working in joint operations with District 8 were able to bring this fire under control in a timely fashion. No injuries were reported, and the occupant was able to escape on his own. Monday morning's fire remains under investigation.

The department would like to thank the Hutchinson Police department, Reno County Sheriff's Offica, Hutchinson/Reno County 911 center, Kansas Gas, Reno County EMS, and Evergy for their assistance.

According to agenda documents, the Reno County IT department proposes transferring the county's EDR/MDR services from CrowdStrike to Sophos in order to save costs, while trying to ensure continuity of services and ongoing support from a reputable software vendor. 

This change was necessitated by, not just the incident which occurred in July, but the response and service provided to Reno County both during and after the incident.

Additionally, the county was rejected opportunities for negotiation of costs.

The Sophos bid is slightly above the low bid from Fortinet, but would integrate more easily with the county's current infrastructure. Either way, the county will save tens of thousands of dollars over a renewal of CrowdStrike, regardless of the other considerations connected with July's security incident.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County courthouse.

Dan Meers to speak to Chamber

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann believes the long term farm bill is going to get delayed again.

"That's what it's looking like," Mann said. "I'll tell you, I could not be more disappointed or frustrated. I've been to the floor of the House over 30 times urging other members of Congress to get serious about getting a five year Farm Bill done to lock in certainty for our producers. It looks like this is being made to punt yet again. Very frustrating. Not what I want."

The continuing resolution on discretionary spending needs to be dealt with in the next couple of weeks, but the farm bill will not be a part of that work.

"President Trump and his team are involved in the conversation because they're going to be impacted by however long this gets pushed into next year," Mann said. "It looks like the consensus or their desire is end of March, but we will see, those conversations are ongoing. Then really, you know, the question becomes, what is the plan for President Trump's first 100 days? What order does he want to tackle the many, many things to do to get this country back on track? How does government funding fit into that? All those things we'll take into consideration."

With Republican control of both houses and the presidency in January, there should be a change in emphasis next year.

"The election had consequences," Mann said. "The American people loud and clear, they said they want Donald Trump to be the President of the United States, and they are tired of business as usual in Washington. We need to get the train back on the track, so to speak. Republicans flipped the Senate. So 100 senators, that's a 53-47 vote margin in the House. Similar margins we've had, but with three folks from the House that have joined the administration, we'll have a one vote margin, looks like the first 100 days or so of the Congress."

It is important though, that both Ag committees will have Republicans with the gavel as a long term farm bill is worked out.

Reno County Public Building Commission meets Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Kansas State Board of Education is due to vote this week on restrictions on personal device usage in Kansas K-12 schools, based on recommendations from a statewide screen time task force.

"They are really suggesting that boards should, local school boards, should adopt policies on their own that would essentially say at all levels from kindergarten through high school, students are not even to have phones or other type devices like smart watches, those things, even on their person during the school day," said Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards. "Basically,&nbsp;you would come to school, the devices would be secured, there are several ways you could do this to create an environment where kids do not have that personal device distraction at any time. Other approaches have talked about trying to more strictly limit it, say during class periods, but allow kids to do it lunchrooms or in the hallway. It would be a pretty strict policy."

It seems that this would likely be left to those local boards to decide.

"One of the recommendations is to make sure there's a way to sort of securely store a student's phone during the day," Tallman said. "In a very small district, managing that may look very different than in a school where you've got hundreds, you know, maybe many hundreds of kids, you know, entering every day, trying to get to class, you know, managing that looks very different in terms of how you would do it, potentially what the cost would be."

The debate on devices in local school board meetings, if these recommendations are left to them, will likely be robust.

Tallman: State Board to look at device restriction recommendations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, on the 83rd anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, an event was held at the Nickerson Community Center to dedicate highway signs in honor of the 96th Infantry Division.

"I started thinking about this a long time ago," said Ron Hirst, son of PFC William N. Hirst, who was killed while serving with the 96th during World War II. "They finally got the mile markers up and I came to my representatives at the state legislature, Joe Seiwert, Michael Murphy, Jason Probst, Paul Waggoner and Senator Steffen. I want to thank them for their testimony assisting me to get this through the process."

The story of the 96th and their service on Okinawa and Leyte is staggering.

"The 96th was reactivated in 1942 under Major General James Bradley and Brigadier General Claudius Easley," Hirst said. "Both of them stressed rifle marksmanship, hence the name&nbsp; of the'Deadeyes'. The state wouldn't let me put that on the sign. They said you can't use nicknames. I was unhappy with that, but so be it, we're just lucky enough to have the sign. On September 11, 1942, they left training for their combat destination. Then they had some more training in Hawaii, then they were sent to Leyte and Okinawa. The original infantry division had 14,253 men in it. By the time the end came around, there were some 30,000, with replacements, involved in Okinawa. At the end of the battle of Okinawa, in this division, there were 14,484 wounded or had jungle fever, of which 2,136 men would die, with 453 missing in action. The 96th historian at Denver, when I talked to him, told me that the average stay on the front line was five days before a casualty of some kind. There were 8 million artillery shells fired during the 82 days of battle."

The 96th has also served in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Bosnia and areas of the Balkans.&nbsp;

"The signs will be put up out here on this bypass around Nickerson at 56th Avenue," Hirst said. "It will be the next six miles as you're going northwest to the intersection where you turn south to go to Nickerson and north to go to Sterling."

Designated funds from the Hutchinson Community Foundation assisted to pay for the signs, along with numerous donations from Hirst, his family and other community members. The signs will be installed when KDOT has time to complete the work in 2025.

Lindsborg Saint Lucia Festival is Saturday

The 49th annual Stan Kenton Brass Christmas Concert is Sunday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main St.

The long-standing tradition of the concert will feature traditional Christmas carols in the big band style of Stan Kenton.&nbsp;

There is no admission to attend the concert, and everyone is welcome to attend. However, if you would like to help contribute to the travel costs for the band, there will be an offering that will go around.

HARPER COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 10:30 a.m. Friday in Harper County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Ford F150 driven by&nbsp; Joseph&nbsp;Bailey, 49, Kingman, was westbound at 309 West 14th Street in Harper.

The pickup traveled left sideswiping a light pole and barrier.The pickup continued westbound for another block and collided with an eastbound 2020 Kenworth semi driven by Nathaniel Burgess, 59, Republic, Missouri.

After impact, the pickup bounced off the semi trailer and struck the&nbsp; front of a 2004 Chevy Silverado driven by Mark Bowen, 66, Harper.&nbsp;

Bailey was transported to Patterson Hospital in Anthony where he was pronounced deceased.&nbsp; The other drivers were not injured. The KHP had incomplete seatbelt usage information.

Kansas man dies after 3-vehicle crash

RICE COUNTY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kansas man was killed Friday morning in a single vehicle wreck on US 56 east of Little River.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 26-year-old Gabriel Herron was westbound on Highway 56 just east of 28th Road, about three miles west of the Rice/McPherson County line, just before 6:30 a.m.

Fatal wreck on US 56 Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Deshaun Durham walked out of the Hutchinson Correctional Facility on Friday morning with a big smile on his face. The 24-year-old from Manhattan was granted clemency by Gov. Laura Kelly after serving over 2.5 years behind bars.

"It's a surreal moment," Durham said. "It kind of feels like an out-of-body experience, feels like a dream, sometimes I've got to pinch myself to make sure its real."

Durham was sentenced in June of 2021 to 92 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute 2.4 pounds of cannabis. The courts will typically give probation for people with no criminal history, which is why it was rare that Durham was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison.

"He should not have been sent to prison for 2.4 pounds of marijuana for nine years," Barry Grissom, Durham's attorney, said. "When you think about it, it's a waste of taxpayer dollars. The amount of money that we spend in investigation, interdiction, arrest, prosecution and incarceration is money that could be better spent by law enforcement keeping us safe in our homes, as opposed to running a prohibition."

Durham expressed extreme gratitude to Donte West with the Last Prisoner Project, as well as Grissom, as both played integral parts in helping get his sentence reduced.

"It's good to have faith in people out there, working on you and making sure the right things happen," Durham said. "It's just nice knowing you can sleep better at night, knowing you've got people in place that are really devoted and motivated to getting you home."

Although Durham is grateful to be granted clemency, he was surprised that it happened.

"I was surprised, because it's something a lot of people do in the prison system and very few get it," Durham said. "When I got the news I got it, it was hard not to tear up a little bit, because it's just something that's so rare."

&nbsp;Durham was 20 at the time of the crime and says he has learned a lot from being incarcerated.

"I learned my lesson and now we're here, just ready to look forward and open a new chapter in my life," Durham said. "It's kind of taught me that prison isn't a place that I belong and it's not a place that anyone who gets caught with marijuana, something that is legal in a majority of the United States, deserves to be at. There is definitely some real tough characters in prison, and this place can change you for the worse."&nbsp;

Durham's mother, Brandi Davis, was also there to witness her son walking off the property after being released.

"When he called me from sentencing two and a half years ago and told me he got eight years, I was floored," Davis said. "I never imagined that he would get eight years, I thought he was joking. He asked me how he was going to do eight years in prison, I promised him two and a half years ago that I would do everything in my power to get him home. Luckily, I had people like Last Prisoner Project and Donte and Barry that absolutely supported him in every way and fought like hell to get him home. There really are no words. Deshaun hasn't been home for two and a half years. When I was decorating the house for Christmas, I thought about how Deshaun was going to be in all of our celebrations and he's going to be in the pictures this year."&nbsp;

The final night in the cell of the prison for Durham was one he was looking forward to.

"It was definitely hard to sleep, but it was kind of easy knowing it was going to be my last night sleeping in a prison bunk," Durham said. "I actually woke up about 3:30 in the morning and started getting ready and everything, making sure it wasn't a dream still, because it all feels so surreal."

Durham walked out of the prison with a Kansas City Chiefs sweatshirt on, hoping to get to the Sunday Night Football game against the Chargers in two days.

"That was definitely one of my first ideas, I'm trying to go to the game," Durham said with a smile on his face. "I watch every game, I don't tend to miss a game often, so I'm hoping to make it to the game on Sunday."

&nbsp;Gov. Kelly overturned the Prison Review Board's rejection of Durham's clemency application on Nov. 6.

"We were very very fortunate that we have an amazing governor for our state," Grissom said. "Governor Kelly exercised an immense amount of courage and wisdom to reduce this young man's sentence in light of what he said, is going on around the country, when you compare that to what's happening in Missouri, Colorado, Oklahoma, he should not have been sent to prison for 2.4 pounds of marijuana for nine years."

Durham is looking forward to turning his life around outside of the prison walls.

"I'm definitely interested in trying to help other people that are in prison for crimes like mine," Durham. "So no one else ends up like I did, without the support from everybody else around me, I would have had to have done my full eight-year sentence."

Durham hopes to attend welding school and start a family in the near future.

The Last Prisoner Project is a 501(c)(3) non profit that was founded in 2019 and works towards helping incarcerated cannabis offenders.&nbsp;

Manhattan man walks free from HCF

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff's Office said on social media Friday that Detective Sergeant Matt Franklin, graduated from the Law Enforcement Leadership Academy (LELA) Command School Thursday, Dec. 5. 

The Law Enforcement Leadership Academy (LELA) Command School launched in 2013 as a collaboration between the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) and the KU Public Management Center in response to the need for statewide command and executive-level leadership training. 

The LELA Command School is an 11-month, cohort-based program designed to equip commanders and chief executives with the competencies and skills needed for effective leadership. 

Command School participants are required to complete 300 contact-hours of in-person and on-line training in topics including leadership development, executive decision-making, strategic planning and budgeting, performance management, emotional intelligence and more. 

Each participant must complete a series of portfolio assignments, and an individual development plan, along with a final capstone project designed to address a significant problem or challenge they have identified within their organization or community.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reno Co. detective graduates command school

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Friday is the final day of signups for Christmas for the Hutchinson Salvation Army and the need is great this year.

&nbsp;"We already have 1,100 kids signed up for toys, about 900 families for food baskets overall, and so the numbers already way above last year as far as number of individuals," said Major Paul James. "If you need help and you're planning on getting that assistance, we would need you to&nbsp; sign up online."

Saturday is a good chance to give and have your gift multiplied.

"Kiwanis is going to be matching up to $500 and the Salvation Army, our board has pulled together some money as well. So we're $1,500 towards $20 bills only," James said. "This year is a little bit different because we have tap to give. If you tap on the $20, not on the five a bunch of times or the 10 multiple times, but if you tap on the $20 bill, or if you put a $20 bill into the buckets, those will be matched up to $1,500. Then we have a donor who's given $1,000 for the next Saturday. If there's some others that would like to sponsor money towards the match for future Saturdays, we'd like to be able to match each of the last two Saturdays besides this one."

Salvation Army looking for $20s Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss notes that policy decisions by the incoming Trump administration could have profound effects on the economy. One would be deportation of immigrants, depending on how it is handled.

"We know for certain that the deportation of individuals that are working will have a negative impact on the economy in the U.S. and also contribute to inflation, and certainly that's not good," Goss said. "Now, deporting those who come in and not working, now that's a different story. That would have a positive impact on the U.S. economy. In particular, meatpacking is really a dynamic industry in today's world and is changing with new meat processing, more automation, and it is a very dynamic industry. And in this part of the country, you're seeing it being a very positive input into the overall economy."

It's also important that the dollar remain the way the world pays for things.

"What would it mean to the U.S. if the U.S. dollar loses its reserve status across the globe? Then that means higher interest rates in the U.S. and higher inflation. That's the overall impact for the U.S. You see those nations, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, buying up gold, and they want to issue a digital currency backed by that gold. Now, that would undermine the U.S. dollar, but they're years away from that, but they are moving in that direction."

Speaking of interest rates, Goss has changed his position on where he thinks they will go before the end of the year.&nbsp;

"I thought there would be no change. I'm now moving toward the likelihood of reduced interest rates on December the 18th, which means short-term interest rates will come down by a quarter percent or 25 basis points."

Between that and what at least looks like a solid holiday shopping season, that could buoy markets in the final weeks of 2024.
