The NTSB on Tuesday issued a statement in regards to the ongoing investigation of the gas line explosion from Saturday.&nbsp; Here is the context of the statment:

"The NTSB is investigating the Feb. 22 natural gas fueled commercial building explosion, in Hutchinson, Kansas.

A team of five investigators arrived on site Monday (one investigator arrived Sunday), to begin the on-scene portion of the investigation which included inspecting the failed pipe. Today, investigators oversaw the extraction and securement of the failed pipe for shipping to the NTSB materials lab in Washington, D.C., for examination.

In the coming days, the team will be conducting interviews with personnel and witnesses.

During the on-scene phase of the investigative process, the NTSB does not determine or speculate about the cause of the accident.

For information about the status of evacuation orders, please contact local authorities.

The next update will be the preliminary report, which will be available within 30 days; it can be accessed by searching our pipeline investigations pages. A link to the report will also be posted on NTSB Newsroom Twitter.

The preliminary report will contain factual information gathered during the initial phase of the investigation. A final report is expected to be released within 12 - 24 months. "

Kansas Gas sets up station for claims from gas service outage 

MORRIS COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30a.m. Tuesday in Morris County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Peterbilt semi driven by Robert Leroy Dauer, 74, Marquette, was eastbound on U.S. 56 approximately six miles east of Herington.

The vehicle crossed the center lane into the westbound lane. The driver was&nbsp;unable to gain control of the semi and rolled and came to rest on its side across both eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 56.

EMS transported Dauer to the Marion County Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

McPherson Co. man hospitalized after semi rolls

UPDATE:&nbsp;&nbsp; The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has identified the individual who died in an occupational incident at Textron Aviation’s east campus as 61-year-old Rocky Baldwin of Wichita.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Authorities are investigating the work place death of a man in Wichita.

At approximately 12:10 p.m. on Monday, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputies, Sedgwick County EMS and firefighters from Sedgwick County Fire District 1 and the Wichita Fire Department responded to Textron Aviation’s east campus in the 9700 block of East Central for a report of an employee not breathing, according to a media release.

Fire and EMS personnel found a 61-year-old man in a facility paint booth, wearing a ventilator mask and not breathing. Life-saving measures were attempted, but the man was pronounced dead at 12:28 p.m.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, with assistance from Sedgwick County Fire District 1 and the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

UPDATE: Sheriff investigating on the job death at Wichita 

The Red Cross is helping to bridge access to health care for blood donors by providing free A1C testing, commonly used to screen for diabetes and prediabetes, on all successful blood, platelet and plasma donations in March.

One-third&nbsp;of people lack access to regular primary care in the U.S., where diabetes affects&nbsp;1 in 10&nbsp;people and&nbsp;nearly a quarter&nbsp;of those living with it have been undiagnosed, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 

The free A1C screening aims to help address this gap by empowering blood donors with valuable information to maintain their health and well-being. 

According to the CDC, some&nbsp;90%&nbsp;of people living with diabetes in the U.S. have Type 2, a largely preventable and often reversible insulin-resistant condition that can cause dangerously high blood sugar levels. Left untreated, Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health complications, such as kidney failure, stroke and heart issues.

“Type 2 diabetes develops over years and may not cause obvious symptoms until serious damage has been done,” said Dr. Courtney Lawrence, medical director for the Red Cross. “By understanding our own health, we can create a foundation to help prevent chronic illness, improve the quality of day-to-day living and save lives. Blood donation can now be part of that journey.”

The Red Cross will begin the month-long A1C screening for successful donations starting on March 1. Donors can expect to receive the results of their test within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App or online donor portal, and they are encouraged to consult their health care provider if their A1C level is elevated. A1C is the latest health insight that the Red Cross provides to blood, platelet and plasma donors, who can already access ongoing donation information such as pulse, blood pressure, body temperature and hemoglobin levels.

This new offering is among the longtime work of the Red Cross to support the health of communities, which also includes disaster relief efforts such as basic disaster health and mental health services among other assistance.

Supporting the health of communities has long been part of the American Red Cross and traces its roots to its founder, Clara Barton. A lifelong humanitarian and pioneer in the nursing field, Barton first led the organization to deliver relief and care after disasters more than 140 years ago.

Red Cross to offer free A1C testing in March 

The USD 308 Board of Education met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday evening. &nbsp;

In the meeting the board of education was presented with a first look at the 2025-2026 calendar. &nbsp;This proposal was developed by the calendar committee. &nbsp;

This committee is composed of five USD 308 staff members, five HNEA members and three parents. &nbsp;&nbsp;A survey was conducted amongst staff and parents so they could gather input on an additional non-contact day. &nbsp;As a result of the survey, Sept. 8 was selected, this coincides with the Kansas State Fair. &nbsp;The survey also addressed any potential for a late start, a topic discussed during the last board meeting. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In other board business, they approved the purchase of 1,200 Chrome Books for student use. These will replace older Chromebooks that are four years or older. &nbsp;The board also approved the purchase of 300 Apple MacBook laptops for staff to replace those that are four years or older that are being used by staff. &nbsp;

The board approved the first phase of ClearTouch Interactive Display Panels, these are replacing panels that were purchased in 2018 and 2019 which have reached the end of support. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Replacement of flooring at Faris was approved. &nbsp;This work will be done this summer. &nbsp;

Hutch Post has been able to confirm that investigators with the National Transportation and Safety board arrived in Hutchinson on Sunday.  The investigators are here to investigate the natural gas pipeline incident from Saturday that destroyed Steffens Auto Parts.

According to the NTSB each investigation varies on the nature of the accident being investigated. Every investigation goes through the following process • Initial notification and decision to investigate • On-site fact gathering • Analysis of facts and determination of the cause • Acceptance of the final report • Advocating for the acceptance of safety recommendation arising from the investigation

This process can take anywhere from 18 to 24 months depending on the nature and complexity of the investigation.&nbsp;

HARVEY COUNTY —Police in Hesston are investigating four suspects on multiple allegations after an arrest on Sunday in Hesston.

According to a social media report from&nbsp; Hesston Police Chief Chris Eilert,&nbsp;a shoplifting incident at Casey’s truck stop led to a traffic stop on Meadow Lane close to Park Road.

"The two suspects in the shoplifting had already been dropped off at King Park.  When those two noticed the traffic stop they fled on foot in different directions.  One was apprehended by a Harvey County Sheriff’s Deputy on the west side of King Park without incident. The second person was spotted on a porch in the area of Pheasant Run and Lincoln Blvd."

"When the Officer approached the porch the suspect was no longer there.  The officer knocked on the door and when the homeowner came to the door they relayed that the individual had entered their residence and was hiding in the shower. The suspect was arrested without incident."

Another passenger of the car was transported by Hesston EMS to Newton Medical Center for a medical condition.  

A search of the vehicle revealed numerous narcotics and paraphernalia along with the items stolen from Casey’s  

'The driver was arrested for the narcotics and paraphernalia. The subject in King park was arrested for theft, narcotics and paraphernalia.  The suspect taken into custody in the home was arrested for Aggravated Burglary, kidnapping, theft, narcotics and paraphernalia."

"The person transported by EMS will be charged with narcotics possession and paraphernalia," according Eilert.

There were no weapons found on any of the suspects or in the vehicle and none of the suspects are believed to be residents of Hesston or Harvey County.  The narcotics siezed are believed to be Fentanyl, Methamphtamine and Marijuana.  

"Again we want to reassure people that this was a one time incident with no planning on the part of the suspects.  If there was an on going threat to the safety of our resident’s we would notify you all immediately in several ways."

"Out of respect for the victim we will not be sharing names or details that may hamper the prosecution of this case,"&nbsp; Eilert wrote.

Harvey Co. shoplifting investigation led to fentanyl bust

Will Stutterheim is like his father in the way they both seem to never give up on a dream. Growing up on a farm in Phillips County, Stutterheim saw his dad innovate and adapt.

“My dad would experiment with different crops and animals, like most farmers,” Stutterheim says. “Some things worked, some things didn’t, but he was always trying new things.”

Stutterheim saw first-hand the stress living a rural life can bring. When Will was young, he witnessed the extreme stress his parents were living when they lost their farm in the recession.

Fathers and sons typically share similarities. Whether it’s their appearance, the way they speak, distinct mannerisms or decisions that mirror the other, the saying, “Like father, like son” often holds true.

The farm crisis of the ’80s caused a lot of farm families to experience what Stutterheim did. Interest rates around 20 percent meant farm families across the U.S. struggled to make land payments and were forced to sell livestock or their land.

Although Stutterheim was only in the third grade, he could see the emotional impacts this experience had on his parents.

“I didn’t know exactly what it was, but I knew it was a different feeling,” he says of the emotional toll he saw. “I didn’t understand stress in agriculture, but I think to this day, that experience was what motivated me to become interested in psychology, to pursue an education in psychology and what drove me to ultimately become a therapist.”

Stutterheim attended Fort Hays State University and received a bachelor's and master’s degree in psychology. He had classes in the same building his office is now – a full-circle experience in his life.

“Fort Hays checked all the boxes for me,” Stutterheim says of when he was deciding on his education. “This building is the same one I was in as an undergraduate, so I got to know the professors really well. They encouraged me to continue to graduate school, so I did. I also met my wife at Fort Hays, so this place is near and dear to me in a lot of ways.”

After graduate school, Stutterheim started his career as a therapist in Phillipsburg, which is where he saw the prevalence of mental health needs for farmers and ranchers.

Stutterheim knew his office wasn’t going to be where he’d reach rural Kansans. He started giving more presentations to groups about mental health. Initially, attendance was small.

“I tried to get people to my presentations by providing free coffee and donuts,” Stutterheim jokes. “I had four people show up to my very first presentation on mental health and agriculture.”

Some people would have given up after a showing like that. But for Stutterheim, he knew the implications of stigma surrounding mental health, especially in the profession of farming and ranching. As resilient as his dad was when he got the farm back, Stutterheim adapted and continued his mission.

He tried different organizations, different messaging and different venues to reach his intended audience. Pivoting his approach has proven to be the best route forward.

“The stigma is there,” he says. “Sometimes, even just mentioning the words ‘mental health’ can drive people away. I started leaning more into messaging on stress management and wellness. Ultimately, we want to improve our stress and wellness before it becomes a bigger mental health issue. I am all about being proactive rather than reactive. After 20 years as a therapist, crafting the message that way has resonated more effectively.”

“Will has provided impactful presentations to engage agriculture audiences and address critical topics like stress management and mental health,” Stephanie Eckroat, the Ellis County Farm Bureau coordinator who has seen Stutterheim’s impact in Kansas, says. “He has worked to provide valuable skills to educators, those involved in succession planning and many other areas of mental health in agriculture. He has collaborated with many agencies to assist others in providing the best information to members of their community and is personally committed to helping manage mental health issues in areas of Kansas where it is needed the most.”

Today, Stutterheim is an instructor and undergraduate apprenticeship coordinator at Fort Hays State University where he teaches several classes in psychology. He also continues to be an advocate for agriculture in mental health.

That initial presentation Stutterheim gave where he had four attendees has grown to presenting in front of large crowds upwards of 300 people. His message, experience in agriculture and empathy have carried him to help reduce stigma in mental health access across the state of Kansas.

Stutterheim’s dad eventually was able to get the farm back and his mom still lives there today.

Stutterheim knows the importance of taking care of one’s mental health and practices what he preaches. His best method of monitoring his stress level is to evaluate where he is and as he puts it, watching himself like a hawk.

“If you get blocked, take a walk,” he says. “Leave your cell phone behind if it’s safe to do so, and just get outside and take a 10-minute walk. If you're feeling like you’re getting frustrated, if you feel like you're running your head into a problem you can't solve at that time, if your stress is getting up there, there’s scientific evidence in psychology that there are real benefits to just taking a short walk.”

Stutterheim takes walks on the Fort Hays campus, but also enjoys running a chainsaw at his family farm to clear his head.

“Safely wielding the chainsaw, of course,” Stutterheim clarifies.

Kansas Farm Bureau understands the unique needs of rural Kansans. Through the years, the organization has stepped up its efforts to share resources, reduce stigma and improve access to mental health care. What began as a webpage at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kfb.org/ruralmindsmatter">www.kfb.org/ruralmindsmatter</a>&nbsp;has evolved into grassroots efforts initiated by farmer and rancher members to advocate for rural mental health.

In 2024, members saw an opportunity to feature inspiring individuals making incredible impacts in their communities in mental health advocacy. In 2023, Kansas ranked last in mental health, highlighting the urgent need for change. The Rural Minds Matter Advocate of the Year Award aims to celebrate the work that cultivates resilience and well-being among farmers, ranchers and rural communities.

A cohort of judges voted to award Stutterheim with the inaugural award.

“Will’s accomplishments speak for themselves,” Eckroat says. “He has been committed to serving the rural community and speaks of his own experiences with stress in association with his family farming. As an instructor at Fort Hays State University, he’s been an outstanding mentor to many young people, which will have positive impacts on mental health in rural Kansas.”

Just like his dad, Stutterheim is always innovating and trying new things. For farmers and ranchers struggling with mental health, trying new things just might lead to a saved life. That’s worth starting with four people in the room and not giving up.

Fort Hays State University instructor honored for mental health advocacy in agriculture

RENO COUNTY —Fire officials in Hutchinson on Monday released the Battalion Chief Dashcam of the gas explosion on Ave. E and Main on Saturday.

Just before 9:30a.m., crews were in the area for a report of a gas odor.  Crews found the issue at the intersection of Ave E and South Main Street.  The video starts as crews were setting up operations per protocol.

&nbsp;Responding crews could not find a source at that location so they moved their way down Main Street.&nbsp;

When they arrived to the corner of Avenue E and Main Street, they saw the gas coming up through the road and sidewalk.  They entered the business there and their monitors activated.

Crews noted that all the occupants of the building were out, and they exited the building and within 30 seconds the building exploded.

The area between Avenue A and Frank Hart Crossing and Popular Street and Adams Street were ordered to evacuate. Later Saturday night, the evacuation zone was reduced to the area bounded by Avenue C to Avenue F, and Walnut to Adams.

Kansas Gas Service crews&nbsp;continue to work on repairs and restoration in the area of the explosion. There were no injuries reported.

Residents say increases in average household income and businesses that pay above average wage are the top indicators of economic progress in Reno County.

They also identify attracting new businesses, removing and renovating blight, access to affordable child care, improving public infrastructure, and expanding local businesses as the top five economic and community development priorities for the county as a whole.

These viewpoints come from the 1,021 respondents to last summer’s Love Where You Live Community Perception Survey, part of Hutchinson Community Foundation’s three-year effort to provide Reno County communities with data and a process that will empower residents to make positive change and boost community pride.

The second phase of the effort involved a series of community workshops held across the county that drew 205 participants. These gatherings centered on reviewing the survey, discussing priorities and brainstorming ideas for progress. The following were the priorities identified in each community workshop:

Buhler: unique partnerships and better communication; a destination restaurant; public infrastructure; and housing, especially to attract families  

Pretty Prairie: an all-day restaurant; new business lot development; and redevelopment of vacant properties  

South Hutchinson: redevelopment of Poplar Street as a business district and attracting builders to sell and/or renovate blight  

Nickerson: development north of town near the new highway, housing, blight removal, and community engagement and communication  

Haven and Yoder area: infrastructure planning, incentives to attract manufacturing, a grocery store or chain restaurant, and housing to attract families  

Fairfield area: blight removal, safety concerns, housing programs, and uniting communities in ways other than the school district  

Hutchinson (four workshops): housing affordability and development, higher wages, blight removal, and community engagement and communication

The third and current phase of the initiative is supporting communities’ continued progress on their priorities with grant opportunities. Hutch CF is accepting project proposals for Fund for Reno County grants. The first impact cycle, due Feb. 28, focuses on supporting community catalyst projects that improve community engagement, communication and confidence. Local governments and 501(c)3 organizations can apply for grants up to $2,500 for this purpose. Other grants available now are in the areas of dynamic culture, thriving kids and strong organizations.  

In August, the foundation will consider larger grants for community and economic development. Information about all Hutch CF grant opportunities can be found at hutchcf.org.  

In the meantime, the community foundation is working alongside the county, the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, StartUp Hutch, South Central Kansas Economic Development District, Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services and the Reno County Child Care Task Force to connect communities to the organizations and programs that can support their priorities, as well as exploring county-wide initiatives that could make a difference for every community. 

"We believe this process will help residents feel heard, identify shared priorities, and have some agency and resources to make progress year after year,” said Kari Mailloux, Hutch CF director of strategy. “Hopefully it creates a stronger sense of ownership and hope across the county."

MANHATTAN, Kan. – It’s still nearly three months before Kansas gardeners begin to put tomato plants into the ground. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says that’s an opportunity for gardeners to set themselves up for a bountiful season.

“Most of the varieties available to home gardeners are indeterminate,” Domenghini said.

Indeterminate plants are traditional tomatoes that never stop growing. They are capable of producing fruit throughout the season unless disease stops production or frost kills the plant.

Domenghini said gardeners will benefit from choosing tomato varieties with strong disease resistance characteristics.

“Gardeners with limited space will likely prefer indeterminate or determinate types to stretch out the harvest season,” Domenghini said. “If there is space, you may want to grow a combination of all three, with the determinates used to produce a large harvest for canning or tomato juice, and the remainder for fresh eating.”

In Kansas, tomatoes are generally planted in early- to mid-May, or when daytime temperatures are above 70 degrees Fahrenheit and the state has passed the frost-free date. In some areas, such as the northwest part of the state, conditions might not be right for planting tomatoes until the middle of May or a bit later, according to Domenghini.

Even though indeterminate varieties produce fruit throughout the season, “our hot Kansas summers often cause a dry spell in production,” Domenghini said.

Tomatoes are less likely to set fruit when night temperatures remain above 75 F and day temperatures are above 95 F. Hot, dry winds make the situation worse, Domenghini said.
