HUTCHINSON, Kan. — TECH Inc. announced Tuesday the appointment of Lincoln (Linc) Burr as the new Chief Executive Officer, set to assume his role this upcoming Fall.

After an extensive search involving months of interviews and deliberations, the board has selected Linc, confident in his vision, experience, and alignment with TECH’s core values and mission.

Linc possesses extensive expertise and a demonstrated history of leadership, especially in fields focused on services for individuals with disabilities. Throughout his career, he has been a staunch advocate for disability rights, actively involved in policy advocacy at both state and federal levels. His deep commitment to these important causes will undoubtedly bolster TECH’s continued mission to serve our community effectively.

Gov. Kelly orders flags at half-staff for fallen firefighter

RENO COUNTY — The primary election in Kansas for legislative offices is today. 

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The competitive races in Reno County are all on the Republican side.&nbsp;

Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann has a primary opponent in Lawrence's Eric Bloom.&nbsp;

Republicans Bob Fee and Michael Murphy are vying for the 34th District Republican nomination in the Kansas Senate. 

In House District 102, Tyson Thrall and Kyler Sweely are attempting to win a primary to face Democratic incumbent Jason Probst in the fall. 

In House District 114, Steve Schweizer and Kevin Schwertfeger are trying to get the Republican nod for Murphy's legislative seat, as he runs for Senate. 

In County Commission District 2, Melony Ball and Ken Nisly are both trying to unseat Republican incumbent Ron Hirst. 

In County Commission District 3, Tim Davies and Ron Vincent are looking for the Republican nomination for the seat now held by Daniel Friesen, who chose not to run again. 

In County Commission District 4, John Whitesel, who was elected by the party for this term when the seat was vacated, faces the voters as the incumbent against Richard Winger.

Hutch Post will have results as they become available from the Reno County Elections Office after the polls close tonight.

"You can go to <a href="http://RenoCountyHousing.com">RenoCountyHousing.com</a> and take a survey there," Fast said. "We partnered with the county and with South Hutch. All of us chipped in a little bit of money to get this engagement going. You know, it's going to help us determine where to put funds, what people want as a housing policy, and it'll help move our housing commission in the right direction, you know, with the information. You know, our society has become a data-driven society and that's what this is. You know, we're trying to get...I took the housing assessment the other day myself and it's similar to what the census would ask, some of the questions, and I think we're going to get very accurate information for specifically our town and county."

The idea is to give a chance for anonymous public feedback.

"You don't have to put your name on it," Fast said. "I will say that the current council, myself, the rest of us, we do want to hear from the public. We may not always agree. We will listen. We will call you back. I think that our actions have shown that we are transparent. We want communication and we're doing everything to try to get that communication."

Mayor asks public to fill out survey

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage as the nation faces dangerous levels of heat and people head out for final summer travel plans. Since July 1, the Red Cross national blood supply has fallen by more than 25%, and blood donors of all types, especially those with type O blood, are urged to give as soon as possible to help patients receive lifesaving medical care.

Heat impacted more than 100 blood drives in July in nearly every state where the Red Cross collects blood – compounding other seasonal obstacles to blood donation, such as travel and summer activities. Together these factors contributed to a shortfall of more than 19,000 blood donations in July. At the same time, hospital demand for blood products remains strong. Blood products are being sent to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. Right now, type O inventory is so low, distributions of this vital blood type are reduced below what hospitals count on.

“It’s critical hospitals have both type O positive and O negative blood ready to go for patients in the most life-threatening situations,” said Dr. Eric Gehrie, executive physician director for the Red Cross. “Type O is especially important for victims of accidents and other trauma who are receiving emergency treatment. Now is the time for donors of all blood types to give and ensure hospital shelves can be restocked before any impact to patient care.”

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris have captured much of my attention over the past week. If you were to enter our house or office at any given time, you’d likely find the television on in the background with a competition being broadcast. 

My social media channels and news outlet feeds have also been full of stories coming from this year’s Olympics. Some content consists of the heart-warming stories of athletes, some are about the controversies, and some are about the food found within the Olympic Village.

Preparing and providing food for so many athletes from all over the world is a challenge I would not want to tackle. The logistics of securing enough food to create an estimated 13-million snacks and meals and ensuring that each athlete’s nutritional needs are met are mind boggling. 

I’d also be concerned about my ability to successfully provide a rich variety of options that reflect the cultural makeup and food preferences of the Olympic athletes. Simply put, it’s a huge culinary and nutritional undertaking to create so many meals for so many athletes from all around the globe.  I’m glad there are professionals who can do it.

A focus during this Olympics has been to highlight and celebrate tastes from the different regions within France and sourcing from as many food sectors from within the host country. 

The next Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in 2028. 

What will be the foods and flavors highlighted then when serving the masses? 

There’s no doubt that during the 2028 Olympics the food professionals tasked with providing an astronomical number of meals will be successful in sourcing from the diverse supply of food produced by America’s farmers and ranchers. 

There’s no doubt that what is produced will meet the required nutritional needs of these athletes.

There’s also no doubt that there will be an abundance of food options as reflected by the variety of agricultural operations one can find throughout the United States.

Whether it’s meat, eggs, dairy, fruits, vegetables, cereals, oil seeds, protein crops, fish and aquaculture, and even alcoholic drinks, American ag products will be ready to be served.

The Olympics is a place where an exchange of cultures takes place every four years. I can’t wait until 2028 when the vast diversity of our American agricultural products play an integral role in the feeding and fueling of the most elite athletes from around the world as they go for the gold.

The KAB reported there were over 900 entries for this year's awards. The Mississippi Association of Broadcasters judged the entries.

EAGLE Media claims statewide awards from KAB

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager, there is one polling place change for Tuesday Hutchinson residents will want to know about.

"For those in the city who vote at the fairgrounds, we have changed buildings," Fager said. "We're gonna be at the Sunflower North and the Sunflower South building. So precincts one through 18 will vote at Sunflower South, and 19 through 35 will vote at Sunflower North. We'll also have greeters there and everything, so if you get turned around, we can definitely get you directed to the correct location."

Early voting has gone well through the beginning of the day Monday.&nbsp;

"So far, we've had 1,200 early vote, and we've sent out about 800 mail ballots," Fager said.

Early voting closed at noon Monday. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Change in fairgrounds polling sites for Tuesday

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — A McPherson County 19-year-old was killed in a crash early Saturday morning.

It happened around 1:56 a.m. Saturday morning on 6th Ave. just southeast of Marquette, KS. 

The McPherson County Sheriff's Office reports the driver, 19-year-old Dalton Deist of McPherson, KS, was South bound on 6th Avenue in the 2500 block. The driver failed to negotiate a curve leading the vehicle off the road and striking several trees.

Nobody else was hurt. No further information is available at this time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

McPherson County teen killed in weekend crash

NEWTON, Kan. — BNSF will be closing the Main Street crossing in Newton for repairs from 7 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 through 5 p.m. Aug. 16. 

Following that work, the Broadway crossing will be closed from 7 a.m. Aug. 19 to 5 p.m. Aug. 23.

Detour routes will be posted. Be sure to allow extra time for your alternate route.

Lucille repair work starts this week

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) announced Monday that voting for the next Kansas personalized license plate design is now open. Kansans can visit&nbsp;<a href="http://ksplates.kansas.gov/" target="_blank">ksplates.kansas.gov</a>&nbsp;to select their favorite design. Voting will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, and the winning design will be announced on Monday, Aug. 12.

“We know how passionate Kansans are about license plates, and this initiative aims to give the public a direct say in selecting the next personalized plate design that will be featured on vehicles across the state for years to come,”&nbsp;said David Harper, Director of KDOR Division of Vehicles. “We look forward to seeing which design Kansans choose.”

The website offers five distinctive design options for Kansans to select from.

Voting on this round of personalized designs is different from the standard license plate designs Kansans voted on last December. To streamline the process and meet production deadlines, KDOR incorporated feedback from last year’s voting to inform aspects of these designs, including a Kansas outline, wheat, and sunflowers.

The winning design will replace the current “Powering the Future” personalized license plate design.

Residents may vote for their preferred design multiple times. Shortly after the voting concludes, the winning design will enter production and be available for purchase in 2025.

The voting website was made possible with help from the Information Network of Kansas. Kansans can cast their vote by visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://ksplates.kansas.gov/" target="_blank">ksplates.kansas.gov</a>.

"This year, we have a 2020 Ford Escape," Dahlstrom said. "It's blue. It has a really clean interior, only about 42,000 miles on it, so low miles. It zips around town.You can see it at a lot of different places. We're really excited this year about that vehicle."

The more tickets you buy, the less expensive they are per chance.

"You can get 15 tickets for $200, six tickets for $100 and individual tickets for $25," Dahlstrom said. Raffle ongoing for vehicle for Hospice

HARVEY COUNTY — A $16.5 million project to replace the Southeast 36th Street bridge over I-135 at Newton is expected to begin around Monday, Aug. 12.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project will provide a wider bridge, with two lanes and a turn lane as well as a sidewalk.

The work is expected to be completed by Nov. 1, 2025.

During the work, motorists on I-135 should expect to slow down near the work zone. Traffic will be maintained on 36th Street through the work zone, but motorists there should also be prepared to slow down for the construction.

Access to businesses along 36th Street will be maintained but could be altered at times to allow for construction operations.

Pearson Construction, of Wichita, is the primary contractor for the $16,534,022 project.

$16.5 million bridge replacement at Newton to start around Aug. 12

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the news on Friday that the national unemployment rate is up again to 4.3%, the highest since 2021, the ripples of that are being felt across the Midwest.&nbsp;

"We can say pretty safely that this U.S. economy and the Mid-American economy is slowing down fairly significantly," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss prior to the release. "The manufacturing sector in Kansas is moving sideways to a bit down."

Goss previously has said that the rate of increasing debt in the federal government is not sustainable. It's also important to note that the government pays a higher rate on its debt when overall rates are higher.

"That is the big elephant there in the room, and that's the interest payments on the debt, which is now greater than the military budget," Goss said.&nbsp; "We're talking about over a trillion dollars spending for our own interest, and the rates are going to be elevated for some time."

The Federal Reserve plans to cut interest rates at its September meeting, and Goss believes they will do so a second time in the fourth quarter of 2024.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council will hold a public hearing on the upcoming 2025 budget Tuesday, Aug. 13.

The total budget is $2,346,911 for City and Rec Commission on $358,409 of ad valorem collections.

The City mill levy is 39.427; with the Recreation Commission at 1.390.

The public hearing is at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Buhler City offices.

Buhler sets budget hearing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Tractor Supply is inviting customers to attend a Pet Adoption Event on Aug. 10, 2024, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

"As an active advocate and supporter of pet rescue and adoption, Tractor Supply strives to inform our customers of the pet adoption process by providing a safe and comfortable space for placing adorable animals in welcoming homes," said Zach Lewis, manager of the Hutchinson Tractor Supply store. "Through this and other year-round adoption events, our goal at Hutchinson store is to connect adoptable pets with interested owners."

The pet adoption event is open to the public and friendly, leashed pets. It will take place at Tractor Supply at 1203 N. Lorraine St..

During the event, the following community partners will be on hand with dogs and cats looking for homes.

The event is in partnership with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter.

In addition to supporting community groups in their work to find good homes for great animals, Tractor Supply's pet adoption event will include Pet Adoption, Pet Care 101, Giveaways and Pet Treat Tasting.

Pet adoption event Saturday

LINDSBORG, Kan. — Bethany College is proud to announce its upcoming Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Honor event on October 4 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sundstrom Center in Downtown Lindsborg. This evening will honor outstanding individuals who contributed significantly to Bethany College athletics and beyond.

The Athletic Hall of Honor Award goes to alums whose performance on the athletic field during their time at Bethany was noteworthy and exemplary. Inductees for 2024 include Randy Linton, ‘80; Frenchie Buckner, ‘98; Nicole (Felker) Thompson, ‘13; Kelli (Traffas) Scriven, ‘14; Jenny (Garcia) Castro; ‘15; Miranda (Burton) Drouillard; ‘16.

The Alumni Coach of the Year Award recognizes alums who have directed or coached their sport to an outstanding level of performance. Inductees for 2024 are Rick Bloomquist, '76, and Kim Rolfs, '96.

The Bethany Athletic Association Award of Merit goes to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and dedication throughout their careers, leaving a lasting legacy on Bethany College athletics. This year's award goes to Jim Turner, '68.

The event will also feature the alum awards presentation, celebrating the achievements of Bethany College graduates who have excelled in their respective fields and continued support of their alma mater.

The Gold Awards go to Mandy Todd '05 and Alan English '07. This award represents graduates of the last two decades who have made outstanding contributions to society and whose achievements demonstrate a person who shows promise, has high aspirations, and has made a difference in the lives of people around them.

The Alumni Award of Merit goes to Bob Kruger '62 and Ryan Holmquist '05. This award represents graduates of more than 20 years who have exemplified distinguished service as professionals while maintaining an interest in Bethany College.

The Bethany College Distinguished Graduate Award goes to Susan Concannon '80. This graduate award represents outstanding achievement and service to society.

The Bethany College Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes outstanding achievement and service to society by a graduate who has provided "unique and significant service" to the college over their lifetime. The Bethany College Alumni Council may annually give one recipient the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award. Former classmates or friends make nominations for the award, and the Alumni Council makes selections. This year's award goes to Karma Tidemann '72 and Ross Tidemann '71.
