Dave Bohnenblust for McPherson County Commission

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Dave Bohnenblust has filed and is running for McPherson County’s District 2 Commissioner position.&nbsp; District 2 encompasses the townships of McPherson, Canton, Spring Valley, Meridian, and Ward 1 of McPherson.&nbsp;&nbsp; Bohnenblust is running unopposed for the position.

Current Commissioner, Tom Kueser is not seeking reelection which left the seat open this election cycle.&nbsp; Kueser, President of the State Bank of Canton, has served as County Commissioner for District 2 since 2019.&nbsp; He was appointed by the Republican Precinct Committee in April of 2019 and was Elected to serve in this role in 2020.&nbsp; 

Kueser stated that he never thought of himself as an elected official, but as Public Servant.&nbsp; “I will truly miss the connection that I have formed with the community during my time of service.&nbsp; I want to thank each of you for your input and for your ability to make McPherson County a Beacon for all others to look towards.&nbsp; I also want to thank you for the trust that you put into me during this journey.&nbsp; God continues to bless my family and McPherson County in so many ways.&nbsp; The best part of the job was being able to make a difference when asked or when I saw the need.&nbsp; It was always my intent to keep government small, but very effective and efficient.&nbsp; I sincerely thank you all for the support and prayers over the years.&nbsp; This ride we have shared together is something I will always cherish and never forget.&nbsp; Thank you and God Bless you all.”

Bohnenblust was born and raised in McPherson and has lived here for 50 of his 65 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School, Kansas State University (Civil Engineering and Business Management) and UT (MBA).&nbsp;&nbsp;Dave is married to his high school sweetheart, Mary (Stucky).&nbsp; They have 5 grown children and six grandchildren.&nbsp; “McPherson County has been good to me and my family," Bohnenblust said.&nbsp; "It’s been a great place to raise my family and it’s time for me give back and serve the people of McPherson County."&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

He is currently employed by KDOT as a district maintenance engineer overseeing transportation infrastructure and building maintenance issues in 22 counties.&nbsp;&nbsp; He served as McPherson County’s public works director for 3 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; “My work experience gives me the knowledge to make sure McPherson County has the infrastructure, equipment, staffing, roads and bridges that the public expects.&nbsp; My life experiences will make me be a good listener to hear the needs and concerns of the people.” &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bohnenblust also worked in engineering and management for NCRA (now CHS) and Williams Energy.&nbsp; “I have worked for several of the larger energy companies in the county.&nbsp; This helps me know what the McPherson county industries need from the county,” He commented.&nbsp; “My master’s in business and business background will help me evaluate the counties financial and budgetary issues.&nbsp; As Commissioner Kueser stated, I will strive to keep government small but effective and efficient.”&nbsp; He is a licensed professional engineer in 3 states (Kansas, Colorado, and Texas).&nbsp;&nbsp;

He has been endorsed by KFL PAC.&nbsp;&nbsp;

John Holthus is serving as his treasurer.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Brett Berry has made a name for himself over the past few weeks, including on Saturday night at SaltCity Racing at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. The Hays native claimed his third title in the IMCA Modified in a one-week stretch.

Berry won the checkered flag at Dodge City Raceway Park last Saturday, then it was Friday night at Salina Speedway, and Saturday at SaltCity Racing. The win for Berry on Saturday marked his 11th win of the season.

Troy Gemmill from Ponca City, Okla., finished in second place behind Berry. Hutch natives Jake Nightingale and Peyton Burkhart finished 3-4.

Mike Petersilie picked up the win in IMCA Stock Car Feature. The win is his second of the year, with both coming at SaltCity Racing. Petersilie claimed the IMCA Stock Car Feature in Hutch on June 21. The Hoisington native placed fourth on Friday night in La Crosse in the Super Late Models Feature race.&nbsp;

Cleo Adams from Oklahoma City finished second behind Petersilie. Adams moved up 12 spots throughout the race to make up the most ground of any competitor. Hutch native Scott Miller placed third.

Tyler Nerud made the trip down from Dorchester, Neb. to win the IMCA Northern SportMod Feature. The win Saturday is the 10th of the season for Nerud.&nbsp;

Salina native Warren Huffman finished second, while Jimmy Brozek from Stafford took third.&nbsp;

The final race of the night saw Dusty Leonard from Marysville win the Dirt Super Late Models Feature. Leonard had the top qualifying time from the heats, and proved to be the top racer from start to finish in the feature. The win for Leonard is his third of the season.&nbsp;

Dan Smith from Beloit took second, while Delbert Smith from Wichita placed third.

Berry wins IMCA Modified at SaltCity Racing for third win this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved animals, the 18-year-old American Bison, “Norman.” A well-known resident in the community  and the Zoo, the male bison was humanely euthanized due to complications with long-term health issues. 

Dan and Shirley Power donated Norman to the Hutchinson Zoo in September 2021. Power purchased  Norman from Hedricks Exotic Animal Farm when he was a calf. Norman lived at the Powers' home on  North Monroe for 15 years. “I had always wanted to have a bison, and this opportunity became  available to our family,” said Power. When Dan and Shirley bought a new home a few years ago, they  had to face the decision to move Norman to a new place. 

In early 2022, Zoo Staff noticed that Norman was losing weight and worked closely with Dr. David  Harder at Prairie Vista Veterinary Hospital to manage symptoms and determine the cause. The Zoo utilized their staff’s skills and support from behavioral training consultants to do a voluntary blood draw  on Norman in less than 24 hours. “Because of Norman’s trust in us and the skills of our team, we  accomplished something that we believe had not been done with bison in a human-care setting,” said  Hutchinson Zoo Director Nicole Mantz. “We gave Norman the choice to participate in his health care, something not often found in bison management.” 

From the bloodwork, the Zoo learned that Norman had a protein-losing disorder. Staff and veterinarians  consulted other zoo vets and industry professionals to provide the best support and medication to  manage his symptoms for over two years. Staff used training sessions to monitor his weight closely,  administer medication, obtain subsequent blood for testing, and even trim his hooves, all voluntarily.  “Through our collaborations and sharing Norman’s story, more than the Hutchinson/Reno County community and Zoo guests have fallen in love with Norman. Experts across the country have volunteered their time to help make him as comfortable as possible in his remaining years,” said Mantz.  

The collective love and support made a significant difference in Norman's life. When a new guest came  to see the bison, Norman would be the first to greet them. His remarkable personality made him a wonderful ambassador for his species, inspiring others to care for native wildlife. Norman’s light and  energy will live in the Zoo’s mural at Splash River Nature Playscape; his hoofprint at the feeding station  in the bison habitat and scientific presentations about his training will remind us how he helped revolutionize humane bison care. “While our staff feels the loss of any animal resident, we recognize  Norman’s passing also resonates with our local and professional communities. He was very special to all of us and will be greatly missed.”

Dan and Shirley Power donated Norman to the Hutchinson Zoo in September 2021. Power purchased Norman from Hedricks Exotic Animal Farm when he was a calf. Norman lived at the Powers' home on North Monroe for 15 years. “I had always wanted to have a bison, and this opportunity became available to our family,” said Power. When Dan and Shirley bought a new home a few years ago, they had to face the decision to move Norman to a new place. In early 2022, Zoo Staff noticed that Norman was losing weight and worked closely with Dr. David Harder at Prairie Vista Veterinary Hospital to manage symptoms and determine the cause. He said in an email to Hutch Post that the plan is to reopen the street at the end of the day on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

A water line broke and the repair work done in July involved replacement of the water line under Severance Street between 17th Avenue and 23rd Avenue.

NEWTON, Kan. — Harvey County Commissioners voted on Tuesday to put a question to take off the 30% food sales requirement for liquor by the drink on the November ballot.

This is after both Reno and McPherson County voters approved the removal of the same restriction in their counties in 2023. Sedgwick County already had removed the restriction. Of the counties bordering Harvey County, only Marion County still has the restriction.

The question will be on the Nov. 5 ballot in Harvey County.

Food sales tax requirement on Harvey Co. November ballot

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a petition was signed by the right number of people, the Hutchinson City Council will consider waterline improvements in the Spyglass Hills area.&nbsp;

According to agenda documents, the cost estimate for those improvements is $480,000.

The City will contribute $100,000 to the overall cost and pay $49,061 for valves and hydrants, as outlined in their special assessments policy. The remainder of the costs will be assessed to the property owners.

The properties will be considered part of a special assessment improvement district. The division of the costs will be allocated based on shares, with lots being assigned one or two shares. This was mutually agreed upon by the property owners.&nbsp;

After the project, the property owners will have a chance to reimburse their share of the improvements, or it can be assessed to their property over 20 years.

The city may use a temporary note to finance the project until completion. Then the city will bond the cost of the improvements and use the payments from the homeowners to pay the bond payments.

The Hutchinson City Council meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. at City Hall.&nbsp;

Spyglass Hills waterline improvements on agenda

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's another night of racing Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

"I'm excited for Saturday night," said Phil Nightingale with Salt City Racing. "We've got some good classes coming up. We got the late models coming back, so it's big cars with big wide tires that go pretty fast, and we got A mods, we got B mods, and stock cars, so it should be an exciting night, Saturday night."

Hutch is the only half-mile in the High Plains Late Model series.

"They are really fast cars," Nightingale said. "That really helps them a lot, they're a lightweight car, but they also got those big wide tires that can help them pull them into corners."

Nightingale plans to get 2025 dates to the Fair Board next week and he wants a long-term deal so he can put more investment into the facility.

"Yes, I will not go back with a one year deal," Nightingale said. "That won't work for keeping it there. There's so many things I want to do to that racetrack. I can't invest money and things into that racetrack for a one year contract. We got to get a multi year deal to keep this thing moving forward."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After the decision following a public hearing Monday by the Reno County Planning Commission to send the Board of County Commissioners a recommendation not to ban solar in the zoned areas of Reno County, the Board of County Commissioners is going to give itself some time to look at the record before making a final decision.

The board plans to have a study session on the solar topic on Sept. 11 and then an agenda item on that same topic on Sept. 25. 

The board wanted to have both Public Works Director Don Brittain and County Planner Mark Vonachen available for questions and both are not available either one meeting day or the other in August, so the commission is pushing the decision out to give itself more time to read the record as entered at the planning commission and then hash it out through September.

County commission to take up solar in Sept.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said consumer debt is a problem that is getting bigger as prices have risen, even though they are doing so more slowly than they were.

"Those credit card balances are up to record levels, even paying over 20% interest rates on the balances you carry forward," Goss said. "We're seeing this economy right now. We've got the top 20% doing reasonably well, the bottom 80% not so well, and that's where we're getting the hit right now, but as you say, the federal government has been spending, and that's where they've pushed the economy forward. Of course, now the Fed is going to have to pull back some, reining in that, but now they've decided, well, now we've gone too far. We've got to cool it. Let's cut the interest rate now."

"A quarter percent cut at their meeting on September the 18th is not going to be that big a deal," Goss said. "A second cut, I expect, in 2024, so I expect two rate cuts this year from the Federal Reserve."

There is one thing both major party presidential candidates have in common.

"We're going to see more spending," Goss said. "The question is, how do you pay for it? Probably the Democrats would be more likely to raise taxes, and of course, that would have some negative impacts on the economy. The Republicans are more likely to do other factors, not raising taxes, but increasing the debt. So, you got a little bit of bad for both parties. They're offering solutions that are not very tasteful for the average taxpayer and average worker out there."

Fed chair Jerome Powell said a rate cut at the September meeting would be unrelated to the upcoming presidential election.

She serves as the Missionary and US Administrator for Ripples from the Well, a non-profit organization dedicated to caring for vulnerable children and cultivating self-sufficient communities in Jinja, Uganda. Liz brings a wealth of experience from her background as an elementary school teacher in Hutchinson and her involvement in various non-profit initiatives.

Liz's journey is a testament to the power of divine calling and commitment. At just 13 years old, she felt a profound calling to serve in Africa. This dream became a reality in 2022 when she visited Uganda for the first time, two decades after her initial calling. Leaving behind a full-time teaching career, Liz embraced her vocation to serve God's purpose, focusing her efforts on the children in Uganda.

As a licensed foster parent and seasoned educator, Liz uses her skills to serve and empower children both locally and globally. She believes in teaching as a conduit for love and service, and she now applies these skills to stand in the gap for the most vulnerable in Uganda.

New film coming to Cosmosphere

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Community Foundation has awarded a total of $53,644 in competitive grants from the Fund for Reno County so far this year.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County serves as a permanent resource for the changing needs of Reno County. Grants represent an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency, a critical need that requires funding or an opportunity that needs a bit of local support to leverage resources for the community.

Proposals for the grants are accepted year-round, with awards decided in January, March, May, July, September and November.

The following organizations have received grants:

City of Pretty Prairie, $3,850: This project aims to open the eyes of the younger generation to the performing arts, as the city has recognized a hunger for activities beyond sports. A traveling performing company will host a series of interactive and educational workshops that will culminate in a public performance this summer.

Earth Matters, $3,600: Earth Matters seeks to improve environmental awareness and encourage youth to counter the effects of pollution by reducing, reusing and recycling. This volunteer organization will begin its work by collaborating with fourth- and fifth-grade students who are members of the Torch Club – the student leadership group of Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson. Along with a set curriculum, students will learn about the Reno County Landfill and the science used in the local waste system and the TECH recycling center, Fair Price Clothing, and Builders Bargains to see how reusing takes place locally. Earth Matters hopes to take students who have completed the program into classrooms and community organizations to share their commitment to environmentally conscious choices.

Episcopal Social Services (Milestone Clubhouse), $13,046: Funding will support Milestone Clubhouse’s goal of increasing transportation for its members, who are adults with a severe and persistent mental illness. Many people with social anxiety have a difficult time with public transportation, so Milestone makes transportation to the clubhouse for services and meals, to employment, and to medical appointments available to club members.

Hutch Rec, $8,500 per year for two years: Funding will support establishing a tenants’ association. Hutch Rec learned of the potential need for and benefits of such an association through its work with residents participating in the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative. The organization will explore and develop an association with the goal of creating a system that is fair to tenants and landlords and provides education on tenant-landlord rights and responsibilities.

Hutchinson Recreation Foundation, $12,114: Since 2023, the Hutch Refugee Project has partnered with the International Rescue Committee and numerous local churches, organizations and businesses to create an inclusive community where refugee families are not just surviving but thriving with access to the resources and opportunities they need to build stable, independent lives in Hutchinson. This funding supports continued refugee family integration in the community through funding for summer child care at the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson and YMCA memberships, as well as cultural competency training for volunteers and service providers.

Partridge Public Library, $1,500: The construction of a new Partridge Public Library will bring a new building to the town and an opportunity to add new services. This funding will support the installation of five sensory panels designed to promote brain growth, physical development and social interaction for young learners.

Streetlight Ministries Inc. $2,584: Streetlight Ministries Inc. is working to minimize food insecurities in the Arlington and USD 310 areas of Reno County and has given over 9,200 food boxes from the Arlington Community Center since 2015. With this grant, the walk-in cooler and freezer will be upgraded to address ongoing maintenance issues and prevent unnecessary food loss.

Wisdom in Motion, $8,450: Wisdom in Motion works with youth through individual mentorship, group meetings, educational support, and family access to financial education. Its goal is to guide at-risk youth out of a school-to-prison pipeline and help them envision and achieve the best version of themselves. Wisdom in Motions seeks to increase minority youth representation in mentoring and other programming by intentionally recruiting and training mentors who are minorities themselves.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, leadership and collaboration to strengthen Reno County. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $104 million to organizations.

Adult Recess fundraiser is this evening

Unpredictable weather, equipment breakdowns and technology issues are part of the deal for the custom harvesting crews that traverse the Great Plains each summer chasing the next field ready to cut. Recently released by Fort Hays State University’s Tiger Media Network, the student documentary “Life on the Harvest Run” captures the story of two Kansas-based custom crews, the frustrations they face and whether or not the next generation is willing to take on those challenges.&nbsp;

“The harvest life is so spontaneous and so not planned from day to day,” custom harvest crew member Rebecca Froese said during the film. “There's a lot of adverse and strange conditions that throw themselves at us in harvest - rain, equipment breakdowns, you name it.”&nbsp;

Custom harvesters travel the country each summer to harvest crops for farmers or businesses that may not own the necessary large-scale or specialized equipment needed for harvesting or for producers facing time constraints during the busy fieldwork season. The work of these crews helps ensure crops are harvested efficiently and effectively.&nbsp;

“With harvesting, you’ve got to be crazy to be doing it,” said Brad Befort, a custom harvester, during the film. “It's almost like you're just a little boy that's grown up and you're playing with bigger toys in the sandbox than you did when you were little.”

The film focuses on two family operations - Brad Befort Harvesting in Hays and Froese Brothers Inc. in Inman. To produce the documentary, three FHSU students - Ryan Schuckman, Raegan Neufeld and John Billinger - interviewed active and retired custom harvesters from 20 to 91 years old to get a mix of present and past perspectives on the unique job.&nbsp;

“One goal of Tiger Media Network is to give students a look into what the real-world working environment might be,” said Nick Schwien, director of TMN. “We want our FHSU students to stand out to potential employers when they apply for jobs post-graduation. Experiences like this fit perfectly into the Department of Informatics approach to preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce.”

More than just a student project, “Life on the Harvest Run” captures the spirit and camaraderie of a family tradition filled with challenges and triumphs. This behind-the-scenes view of custom harvest crews also shares an important perspective on what it takes to get wheat from a farmer’s field to a consumer’s plate.&nbsp;

“Not only are we learning how to work as a team, but we’re also learning about events and history we wouldn't have known otherwise,” Billinger said in the release. “It helps preserve their stories and experiences for generations to come.”
