Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of East 3rd and North Maple.

In 1927, brothers W.R. and J.R. Cody were specializing in long-distance hauling and storage. They decided to build a very heavy-duty storage facility at 229 E. 3rd. The first photo shows the construction (close to finishing) that winter.

The structure housed the Cody Transfer &amp; Storage Co. until 1937.

In 1939, it became the Heazler Cartage Co.

In 1947, the Baldwin family purchased the building and it housed the Barnett Warehouse Co. between 1947 to 1968.

In 1970, Carl McCoy made it the McCoy Discount Furniture Warehouse but only for a year or so. The second photo shows the McCoy enterprise there.

In 1971, Bernie Wray bought the building and it became the longtime home of Wray &amp; Sons Roofing and Storage. Bernie Wray also stored his huge collection of vintage automobiles until his passing. The third photo shows the 229 E. 3rd building today, still the Wray Roofing business after 54 years there, and owned by Greg and Cliff Wray. The property is all part of the Wray Properties L.L.C.

The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the March Small Business Award to Sunflower Electric Supply.

For more than seven decades, Sunflower Electric Supply has been a pillar of Reno County’s business community, evolving to meet the changing needs of electricians, contractors, and industries. The company’s roots trace back to 1950, when Edward Engler, a local accountant, recognized a major gap in the electrical trade. At the time, electricians in Hutchinson didn’t have a dedicated electrical distributor, which made sourcing supplies a challenge. Engler stepped up to meet that need, opening a store to provide the specialized materials electricians required. Since then, the business has continued to grow, evolve, and adapt, moving locations several times before settling into its current home at 100 W. 2nd in 1981.

For much of its history, Sunflower Electric focused on residential and light commercial work, even operating a showroom where customers could pick out lighting fixtures. But as big-box stores began dominating the home improvement market, the company made a strategic shift toward industrial supply, now serving electricians who work in power plants, gas plants, and other large-scale facilities. Today, Sunflower Electric stocks hard-to-find, hazardous-type fittings and industrial electrical components, ensuring that customers can get what they need quickly and efficiently—often faster than online suppliers. Unlike competitors with out-of-state headquarters, Sunflower Electric keeps decision-makers right here in Hutchinson, giving customers immediate answers and solutions without corporate red tape.

Sunflower Electric Supply named Hutch/Reno County Chamber Small Business of the Month 

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the City of Hutchinson said that they have reopened South Main Street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, Avenue E, one block on both sides of Main Street remain closed at this time.&nbsp; To help manage the increased truck traffic during the Woodie Seat project, Avenue F will remain a four-way stop until construction is completed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sidewalks along the site may open as early as Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan – The Special Education Department of USD 308 is excited to announce a resource fair on Thursday, April 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Salthawk Activity Center.

This event, designed for all families, will feature over 30 vendors and is made possible by the generous support of Dillons and Heartland Credit Union, who will provide light refreshments and door prizes. 

Attendees can benefit from Spanish translation services and childcare throughout the event. 

The come-and-go format allows visitors to explore booths at their leisure, and there is no need to RSVP or schedule appointments with vendors. The event is free and open to the public.

The Hutchinson Community Concert Association has started their annual membership drive.

Katie McMahon is best known for her exquisite soaring soprano solo in the original River Dance. McMahon was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. She was classically trained in voice and harp. The Celtic Celebration will include Katie McMahon with the music ensemble and Celtic dancers. 

Live from Laurel Canyon - April 24, 2026, 9 p.m.

Live from Laurel Canyon presents an endearing evening of live music and narrated stories of some of the most influential songwriters who lived in Laurel Canyon, California, in the mid-60s and 70s.  They celebrate the music of the Mamas &amp; the Papas, The Byrds, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, and more. 

Hutchinson Community Concert Association has a reciprocal arrangement with the Golden Belt Concert Association in Great Bend, which allows Hutchinson Concert Association members to attend any of the concerts in Great Bend as well. 

The officers for the Community Concert Association are Jay Brown, President; Donna Pitzer, 1st Vice president; Betty Oliver, 2nd Vice president; Beth Hinshaw, 3rd Vice president; Mary Falter, Secretary; and Craig Johnson, Treasurer. 

All concerts will be held in historic Memorial Hall, Avenue A and Walnut, in Hutchinson.

Hutchinson Community Concert Association starts 2025-2026 membership drive 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday approved a $20,000 annual contribution to support the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, a nationally recognized tournament held each March at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The request was passed 4-1 with Garza, Richardson, Meggers and Fast voting yes, while Goss voted no.

The funding request was presented by Dr. Christopher Parker, president and CEO of the NJCAA, who emphasized the organization's growing financial investment and the tournament’s increasing national profile. Parker first presented the request to&nbsp;City Manager Enrico Villegas last week.

“As we talked last week, the dynamics of the tournament — the ‘Road to Hutch’ — is something we’ve poured into,” Parker said. “I’ve been in this role for eight years now, and we’ve got some great partners in Hutchinson — the city, the American Legion, Visit Hutch — all working to make this event a success.”

The NJCAA has increased its own commitment, investing more than $65,000 annually into branding, hospitality, and media coverage. Streaming the tournament on ESPN+ alone costs about $30,000, Parker said.

“This is the only tournament out of our 57 championships that operates under this model,” Parker said. “We’re simply requesting $20,000 a year to offset the rising costs we've already taken on.”

Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Community Outreach Andrew Givens noted that Parker had met with Villegas ahead of the meeting to discuss the request.

Vice Mayor Scott Meggers asked whether the $20,000 would be subject to the same 80/20 revenue split between the NJCAA and the American Legion that the tournament typically follows.

“Since this is just a request to the city, we would basically put 100% of this money back into the expenses,” Parker said. “It wouldn't be a split, because that split is only for revenues. This would go directly into the budget to support the event here in Hutch.”

The motion to approve the funding was made by Councilman Steve Garza.

“I have no problems,” Garza said. “We put $20,000 in, it goes back into the city. We get it back through taxes, through hotels, so it’s a no-brainer for me.”

Councilman Jon Richardson asked Parker if any of the tournament’s branding efforts promoted Hutchinson specifically.

“Absolutely,” Parker said. “If you walk in, you’ll see the first big sign that says ‘Welcome to Hutch.’ If you saw the game — either live or on ESPN — the first thing you see is drone footage of Hutchinson and the Sports Arena. They talk about Hutchinson. That exposure didn’t exist two years ago.”

“I kind of look at the ask as being almost like additional sponsorship for marketing the city of Hutchinson,” Richardson added. “We’re helping offset some marketing costs for extra exposure.”

While most council members supported the request, Mayor Stacy Goss raised concerns about the lack of hard data regarding the tournament’s economic impact.

“My concern is that we haven’t been presented with the financial or tourism impacts in quite a while,” Goss said. “It’s probably just that we don’t, as a city, have those numbers. I believe the Chamber has them — things like lodging, sales tax, fuel tax.”

Parker acknowledged the absence of a detailed economic impact report.

“There is nothing I can present to you that shows the total income spent at restaurants and hotels,” he said. “My speculation is that, behind the fair, this is probably one of the top economic weeks in the city.”

LeeAnn Cox, vice president of operations and tourism for Visit Hutch, echoed that challenge, citing data-sharing limitations with the American Legion.

“To generate a full economic report, we need a lot of backend financial data, and until recently, the Legion has not been comfortable sharing that,” Cox said. “But we’re working with new leadership and with the NJCAA to put together a report for 2024 and hopefully one for 2025.”

Cox did provide one concrete metric: This year’s tournament generated 1,262 total room nights, with 787 of those in Hutchinson. The rest were in McPherson and Wichita, due to limited local hotel availability.

That could improve next year, she said, pending the reopening of a local hotel, which would add 68 two-bed rooms to the city’s inventory.

Looking ahead, Parker said the NJCAA Board of Regents will meet April 14 to discuss a possible expansion of the tournament from 24 to 32 teams — a move that would add two more days to the event.

“College athletics has changed drastically,” Parker said. “We’ve taken an old model and modernized it. Now we’re on ESPN. This tournament is getting national attention, and we want Hutchinson to remain its home.”

Hutchinson City Council approves $20K contribution for NJCAA Tournament

The Reno County department of Public Works has closed a stretch of Sun City Road in southwest Reno County.&nbsp;

Due to bridge repair, Sun City Road will be closed from K-14 to South Valley Pride Road until further notice.&nbsp;

There is no timeline for the reopening of the road.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Reno County Department of Aging has announced that they will have a series of presentations of interest to Reno County citizens.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The series of presentations begins on Friday, April 4 and is on each Friday in the Month of April.&nbsp; The presentations are at the Department of Aging and begin at 9:30 a.m.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;$280 million dollar grant agreement between the USDA and the Texas Ag Department will help farmers in the Rio Grande Valley.&nbsp; 

The farmers in that region have been hurt by Mexico’s failure to meet its water delivery obligations under the 1944 Water Treaty.&nbsp; Ag Secretary Rollins said a lack of water has already ended sugarcane production in the Valley and is putting the future of citrus, cotton, and other crops at risk.&nbsp;

TOPEKA – Today, Governor Laura Kelly issued a proclamation declaring the month of April as Kansas Safe Digging Month. The proclamation, in concurrence with National Safe Digging Month, reminds Kansans to call 811 before starting any outdoor digging projects, large or small.

The Kansas Corporation Commission, Kansas 811, Kansas utilities, and Governor Kelly are encouraging excavators and homeowners to call 811 to have utility lines marked before they begin digging projects to prevent injuries, property damage, and inconvenient outages. The depth of utility lines varies and there may be multiple lines in a common area. Some utility lines are buried only a few inches below the surface, making them easy to strike during shallow digging projects. Installing a mailbox, landscaping, putting in a fence, or building a deck are all examples of residential projects that necessitate a call to 811.

Nationwide, 26 percent of damages reported are caused by the failure of the professional excavator or homeowner to call 811 before digging according to the Common Ground Alliance’s most recent damage information reporting tool (DIRT). Statistics show the facilities damaged most often are telecom (47%) and natural gas (40%).

Dialing 811 connects callers to Kansas 811, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig. Calls are taken 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Locate requests can also be made online at www.kansas811.com. Requests should be made at least two working days prior to beginning a digging project. Professional locators are sent to the site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags or spray paint. Once lines have been accurately marked, digging can begin.

Underground utility locate concerns such as timeliness, accuracy, utility damages, and other potential violations of Kansas One Call laws should be reported to the KCC for investigation. The agency also provides education and training opportunities for excavators year-round.

Gov. Kelly proclaims April as Kansas Safe Digging Month

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp; – The State of Kansas ends March 2025 with total tax collections at $636.9 million. That is $13.6 million, or 2.1%, below the estimate. Total tax collections were down 16.2% from March 2024.

Individual income tax collections were $261.6 million. That is $3.4 million, or 1.3% below the estimate. Individual income tax collections were down 28.3% from March 2024. Corporate income tax collections were $50.1 million. That is $26.9 million, or 34.9% below the estimate, and down 35.0% from March 2024. &nbsp;

Combined retail sales and compensating use tax receipts were $246.8 million, which is $8.2 million, or 3.2% below the estimate and down $14.5 million, or 5.5%, from March 2024.&nbsp;

The Consensus&nbsp;Revenue&nbsp;Estimating Group (CRE), comprised of the Department of&nbsp;Revenue, Division of Budget, Legislative Research Department, and economists from the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, and Wichita State University, will meet on April 17, 2025, to review the fall estimate and make any revisions it may consider necessary.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Commerce today launched the Supporting Innovative Growth through New Signage (SIGNS) grant, a new initiative aimed improving the appearance and appeal of retail and commercial business signage in downtowns across the state. The total funding amount available is $250,000 and will be distributed to support innovative, high-quality signage projects.

“Downtown districts are the heartbeat of our rural communities,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Through the new SIGNS grant, we’re directly investing in locally owned businesses and their ability to attract more customers while preserving the charm and character of their historic downtowns.”

Eligible applicants are businesses or building owners, municipalities, Main Street organization, economic development groups, chambers, foundations, tribal organization and other nonprofit community entities. Communities can apply for funding ranging from $1,000 to $50,000, with a required cash match based on the community’s population:

50% match for communities with populations between 2,500 and 50,000

25% match for communities with fewer than 2,500 residents

To preserve the unique character of Kansas’ historic downtowns, the grant prioritizes projects that adhere to the Kansas Commerce Sign Guidelines, ensuring that all signage complements existing architectural features. Preference will be given to three-dimensional signs created and installed by Kansas-based businesses.

Funds will be used to enhance community vitality and contribute to the downtown’s historical and aesthetic character. Awarded funds can be used for the design, purchase, lighting and installation of signs. The program is intended to support multiple buildings and businesses in a downtown region. A minimum of three signs must be proposed in each application.

Applications will be reviewed on a monthly first-come, first-served basis, until the funds are fully allocated. Applicants should ensure proposed projects comply with state and local regulations and that all grant-funded signage is completed within six months of the award approval.

“Historically, rural and small communities often lack the resources to revitalize their towns — that’s why this new funding opportunity is critical,” Assistant Secretary of Quality Places Matt Godinez said. “These investments in our downtowns and small businesses will foster growth and drive economic vitality across the state.”

Kansas Dept. of Commerce launches SIGNS grant 

The Hutchinson Art Center is excited to host their Spring Consignment Art Auction on&nbsp;April 5. 

This year's consignment art auction will feature&nbsp;over 120 works of art, including&nbsp;works by local, regional, national, and international artists. 

Doors open at 9 a.m., with the auction starting at 11 a.m. Lunch will be available for purchase, there will be plenty of seating, and admission is free and open to the public. 

All artwork from the auction is&nbsp;on display in their Main Gallery now through April 5th. This is a great opportunity to view the artwork in-person. This year's consignment art auction will feature&nbsp;over 120 works of art, including&nbsp;works by local, regional, national, and international artists. Hutchinson Art Center to hold consignment auction on Saturday

There has been a steady uptrend to today's setup over the
last 48 hours, and now we are looking at a potentially significant severe
weather event for the region. The main window for severe weather opens up
beginning from 4 p.m. this afternoon and lasts until 1 a.m. &nbsp;Wednesday.

The storm system responsible for the severe risk tonight is
continuing to move into Oregon and Idaho. This system is expected to move
southeast during the day. At the surface, moisture will haul northward, thanks
to stiff south winds to 45 mph. A wind advisory has been issued for the region
from 10 a.m. this morning until 1 a.m. Wednesday.

On the north end, a cold front will be moving into northwest
and north-central Kansas north of I-70 during the late afternoon hours, and
that may be where the event first fires off, in the 4 p.m.to 6 p.m. timeframe.
There, we expect clusters of severe storms with very large hail being the main
threat. There could be an isolated tornado.

South of US 56, supercells are forecast to be the main storm
mode. Models continue to differ on where storms may initiate, but the general
theme has been for areas west of I-35, south of US 56, east of US 183, and
north of US 412 in Oklahoma. Timing for initiation appears to be in the 5 p.m.
to 8 p.m. timeframe. 

These storms will move northeast into an extremely potent
environment. Suffice it to say, any storm that can remain sustained and
independent would be capable of very large hail (tennis to baseball size),
damaging winds over 70 mph, and the potential does exist for strong, long-track
tornadoes.

One agribusiness analyst says there is more fearmongering over a proposal to increase fees on ocean carriers with ties to China.&nbsp;

 The American Farm Bureau conducted a study that shows ag exporters would have to pay millions more in annual transportation costs if the fees went into effect.&nbsp;

 President Trump has proposed a series of fees as high as $1.5 million dollars that would target Chinese-operated vessels and Chinese-built vessels that access American ports.&nbsp;

Ag Minute:  Tariff and fees for China

There have been noticeable signs that spring has arrived on our farm. Following a snowfall during the kids’ spring break, the sun has come out and the temperatures have warmed up. It’s a different feel of seasons. 

The flowers have begun appearing in my yard and on my fruit trees. The bees have been out scouting and gathering water. The wheat in the fields has begun to turn a vibrant green. Migratory birds are moving north. The daylight is present longer.

The consistent signs of this season I watch for every year are once again, like clockwork, appearing. It’s something I find peace in knowing that while there are many unknowns in this world, there are natural elements of the season that steadily persist year after year.

One of the consistent events on our farm every spring is the preparation for planting. The winter shop work has been completed. The machines and equipment have been serviced and we prepare to plant seeds in the ground once more.

Over the years, I’ve heard time and time again that one must be an eternal optimist in order to farm as there are so many uncertainties. There are so many things one does not and cannot control in farming, which still determines the outcome of the investments we make. Weather, pests, disease, costs and the markets are just a sampling of areas that could cause sleepless nights for many if one allows those uncertainties to consume their thoughts.

Yet, just like clockwork, we still plant those seeds into the ground every spring. We believe the sun will rise and the right amount of rain will come when needed. We believe we will have enough hands available to help harvest the crop. We trust there is demand for our grain, which will allow us to continue for another year.

This year is no different. We are preparing to begin the planting our fall crops in the coming days. 

We are preparing for the spring rains that will provide essential moisture to these newly planted seeds. We are preparing for the routines of the work that is done every year as we raise a new crop for another season.

We are preparing for the consistencies we experience every year during this season and are mindful that inconsistencies will appear.

Yes, there are many things we can’t control which at times can cause concern.

Yet despite those unknowns, we still prepare to plant the next crop. We prepare to plant seeds that are full of hope.

Reconstruction of South Spencer Road between East First and Southeast 14th Streets began on Monday in Newton.

 </figure>Reconstruction of South Spencer Road between East First and Southeast 14th Streets began on Monday in Newton.Kansas Paving, will build the project in three phases, beginning with the section from East First to just south of Southeast Third Street. The next phases will begin after completion of the previous phase. Each phase will take 8-12 weeks, weather permitting.During each phase, the road will be open to southbound traffic only.Total cost of the project is about $2.6 million. The City plans to use $300,000 in federal fund exchange dollars toward the project and bond the remaining cost.
