William Lee “Bill” Baker, 79, of Hutchinson, died September 13, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born September 27, 1945, in Hutchinson, to Edward W. and Vera M. (Foster) Baker.

Bill graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1963, received two bachelor degrees in History and Latin American Studies from the University of Kansas in 1967, and a bachelor’s degree in Education from Wichita State University in 1975. He served in the United States Peace Corps in the Amazon Jungle of Brazil for over two years before embarking upon his career as a teacher – a career that spanned 33 years – at Sherman Junior High, Central Junior High, and the final 23 years as a 5th grade teacher at Wiley Elementary School. Two of those years were spent as an exchange teacher in Sydney, Australia. Bill’s passion for teaching and helping children continued after his retirement with teaching stints at Central Christian Schools and short-term mission trips to Brazil with fellow members of his church, Grace Bible Church. He also enjoyed listening to jazz and folk music and was a history buff; however, what Bill enjoyed most were his children, grandchildren, and friends all across the world.

Bill is survived by: his daughters, Katie Givens (Justin) of Americus, Kristin Peterman Childs (Chad Childs) of Goddard, Megan Baker of Overland Park, Denice Naquin (Andy Shreve) of Lafayette, LA; grandchildren, Isla Givens, Sam Peterman, Elliott Peterman, Gracie Childs, Jada Childs, Trey Childs, Lillian Garrison; bonus children, Jerri Carroll, Vicki Keck, Patti Meier, Scott Compton; sister, Carol Hammond of Longmont, CO; brothers and sisters in-law; cousins; nieces and nephews; and many other family members of the heart.

Cremation has taken place and a private family inurnment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Elliott Chapel. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will begin a pavement overlay project on U.S. 50 in Reno County on Monday, Sept. 22. The $3.8 million project is designed to improve the road surface and extend the pavement’s service life.

Work will cover approximately 16 miles, stretching from the Stafford/Reno County line east to South Sego Road.

Traffic through the construction zone will be directed by flaggers and a pilot car. KDOT officials warn motorists to be prepared for delays of up to 15 minutes, as well as the need to slow down and stop when traveling through the area.

APAC-Kansas, based in Hutchinson, is serving as the prime contractor. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by the end of November.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Christian Johnson found Derrick Salley Jr. for a 3-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining, and No. 1 Hutchinson Community College escaped with a 30-27 victory over No. 2 Iowa Western on Saturday afternoon at Gowans Stadium in a rematch of last season’s NJCAA national championship game.

Johnson, who accounted for three touchdowns, led the Blue Dragons (2-0) on a seven-play, 87-yard drive in the closing minutes after Iowa Western’s Malachi Marshall gave the Reivers (1-1) a late lead with a 15-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.

Hutchinson trailed 20-16 in the third quarter after Marshall connected with Cyrus Courtney for a 43-yard strike, but Jack Sells swung momentum with a rare 100-yard return of a blocked extra point. Johnson later punched in a 2-yard touchdown to put the Dragons back on top, 23-20.

Marshall threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns, including scores to DeAndre Horn and Jaivyn Moore, while adding 30 yards and a rushing touchdown. But the Reivers were turned away on downs in the final seconds after Hutchinson’s defense held near midfield.

Johnson completed 18 of 26 passes for 242 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while rushing for 68 yards and two scores. Salley Jr. was his top target with four catches for 106 yards, his first career 100-plus receiving yards game. Rashaud Hurt added 55 rushing yards, including a 40-yard touchdown burst in the second quarter.

Defensively, McPherson native Teegan Haines led Hutchinson with 12 tackles, while K.J. Henson Jr. added seven stops and 1.5 sacks. Kevin Moorer also recorded a sack, and M.J. Graham intercepted Marshall in the third quarter. For Iowa Western, Jerome Baker posted a game-high 13 tackles and Andy Burburija tallied two of the Reivers’ four sacks.

The teams were nearly even statistically — Hutchinson finished with 360 yards of offense to Iowa Western’s 343 — but the Blue Dragons overcame 14 penalties for 136 yards.

The Blue Dragons have won four straight against the Reivers — the longest streak any opponent has managed in Iowa Western’s 17-year program history.

Hutchinson will travel to Fort Dodge, Iowa next week to face No. 14 Iowa Central (2-0), while Iowa Western returns to Kansas to face Dodge City (0-1).&nbsp;

The Kansas State Fair has released updated information on parking and shuttle services as the Fair heads into its final weekend.

Parking Lots
Fair officials confirmed Friday evening that Lots A and B on State Fair Road remain open and will stay available through Sunday under normal traffic patterns. Lot C on Plum Street will reopen to the public at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, September 13, but with limited availability. The lot will continue to provide space for Will Call, handicapped, and Media/VIP parking.

Shuttle Service
Visitors should note that no parking will be available at the Hutchinson Sports Arena this weekend. Shuttles will instead operate from two locations: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Bold 3PL, east parking lot at 1529 E. 17th Avenue •&nbsp;&nbsp;Hutchinson Uptown Mall, southwest corner south of Hutchinson Vintage Market

Shuttle buses will run from 7:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, with the last departures from the Fairgrounds at 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 8:00 p.m. Sunday. Drop-off will be at Gate 8, with pick-up at Gate 9.

State Fair releases parking plans for final weekend 

KINGMAN COUNTY&nbsp;– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a woman in Spivey, Kansas.

On Friday, Sept. 5, around 9:10 p.m., emergency medical services (EMS) were called to a residence in Spivey, according to a media release from the KBI.

The caller, identified as Linda Oeding, 70, requested EMS transport her mother, Betty Oeding, 94, to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for medical care. 

When EMS arrived, they observed Betty was experiencing malnourishment and improper living conditions, and recommended she be transported to a nearby hospital. Linda declined and insisted her mother be transported to Hutchinson.

Betty was admitted into the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, and on Monday she was moved to hospice care. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, around 11:15 a.m., Betty died in hospice care. The Kingman County Sheriff’s Office was called at 4:53 p.m. to investigate and observed signs of neglect.

On Sept. 11, at approximately 11:05 a.m., the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI’s assistance with the investigation.

On Friday, Sept. 12, at 10:41 a.m., Linda Oeding was arrested and booked into the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office Jail on requested charges of first-degree murder, mistreatment of a dependent adult/elder person, abuse and neglect, and interfering with medical care. Formal charges are pending.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation is ongoing. Nothing further will be released at this time.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Press Box Suite C at Gowans Stadium has been renamed the Rusty Hilst Broadcast Booth, honoring the longtime voice of Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College athletics.

Hilst, who died in June after a battle with ALS, spent more than 50 years calling football and basketball games for the Salthawks and Blue Dragons. Known for his warm and steady delivery, he became a fixture on the local airwaves and a trusted source for generations of fans.

The dedication was held Friday at Gowans Stadium, where family, colleagues and friends gathered to celebrate Hilst’s legacy as a teacher, coach and broadcaster.

“Rusty started broadcasting Blue Dragon athletics in 1969,” HutchCC sports information director Steve Carpenter said. “He called 870 Blue Dragon football games, winning 692, and 1,681 Blue Dragon men’s basketball games, winning 1,274. In the later years, he even did 249 women’s basketball games, winning 226. During that time, he got to call three national basketball championships, 19 men’s conference titles, six women’s titles, 14 men’s Region VI titles and six women’s Region VI titles. In football, four league titles and 16 bowl appearances. Rusty got to call a lot of good stuff.”

Over his career, Hilst earned numerous accolades, including Kansas Sportscaster of the Year and the Hod Humiston Award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. He was inducted into the Hutchinson High School Wall of Honor and later became the first non-player inducted into the Hutchinson Community College Quarterback Club Hall of Fame.

“When you name a room after an individual, it’s a permanent way to recognize their importance to a team, school or organization,” HutchCC athletic director Josh Gooch said. “Today is a special day. We get to honor and memorialize a legendary broadcaster that we all got to enjoy.”

Friends and colleagues said Hilst’s influence extended beyond the press box, recalling his kindness, mentorship and commitment to the Hutchinson community.

“On behalf of Hutch High and USD 308, I just want to say how thankful we are for Rusty,” Hutchinson High athletic director Steve Kappenman said. “Myself, growing up, those are my first memories of listening to Hutch High and the Blue Dragons with my dad — that voice in our house. We didn’t have smartphones, so it was that radio tuned into Rusty each time.”

One of Hilst’s longtime broadcast partners and the current voice of the Salthawks, Glen Grunwald, shared stories from years of traveling to and from games together.

Known for his warm and steady delivery, he became a fixture on the local airwaves and a trusted source for generations of fans.The dedication was held Friday at Gowans Stadium, where family, colleagues and friends gathered to celebrate Hilst’s legacy as a teacher, coach and broadcaster.“Rusty started broadcasting Blue Dragon athletics in 1969,” HutchCC sports information director Steve Carpenter said. “He called 870 Blue Dragon football games, winning 692, and 1,681 Blue Dragon men’s basketball games, winning 1,274. In the later years, he even did 249 women’s basketball games, winning 226. During that time, he got to call three national basketball championships, 19 men’s conference titles, six women’s titles, 14 men’s Region VI titles and six women’s Region VI titles. In football, four league titles and 16 bowl appearances. The Kansas State Fair has released an updated parking and shuttle plan for Friday, Sept. 12, as the Fair continues through the weekend.

Parking Lots •&nbsp;&nbsp;Lots A &amp; B on State Fair Road will reopen at 10 a.m. Friday. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Lot C on Plum Street will remain closed, except for handicapped parking, Media/VIP access, and Will Call services.

Shuttle Service
Shuttles will begin running at 7:30 a.m. Friday from three locations: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Stringer Fine Arts Center &amp; Hutchinson Sports Arena (700 E. 11th Street – west side only) •&nbsp;&nbsp;Bold 3PL east parking lot (1529 E. 17th Avenue) •&nbsp;&nbsp;Hutchinson Uptown Mall (southwest corner, near Hutchinson Vintage Market.&nbsp;

The last buses will leave the Fairgrounds at 11:30 p.m. Shuttles run about every 15 minutes and drop off and pick up passengers at Gate 9 on Plum Street. Officials caution that wait times may be longer due to extended routes, and encourage visitors to plan ahead.

State Fair parking lot update for Friday 

David J. Clark, 84, of South Hutchinson, died September 10, 2025, at Mennonite Friendship Communities. He was born December 26, 1940, in Oakley, KS, the son of Cecil and Thelma (Fisher) Clark.

Dave attended Plainville High School. He worked at Namee Wholesale, Consolidated Mfg., and&nbsp;RCAT. Dave retired as a Durham School bus driver and attendant. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church. Dave served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1962-1968.

Dave was an avid sports follower, especially the KU Jayhawks, KC Chiefs, and Hutchinson High School. He was always interested to hear how the grandkids were doing.

Dave is survived by: wife, Doris Schadler-Clark; son, David (Cindy) Clark of Hutchinson; daughters, Julie (Terry) Bland of Kaw City, OK, Tina (Stanley) Martin of Fredonia, FL; 8 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; bonus children, Nancy Thomas of Kechi, Melanie Hefton of Hutchinson, Rhonda (Arley) Philbrick of Hutchinson, Melvin (Donna) Schadler of Sterling; 7 bonus grandchildren; 20 bonus great-grandchildren; and 3 bonus great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Delmar and Clinton.

Per his request, cremation has taken place and a private family inurnment was held.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Tim Adrian officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard.

The Reno County Commission on Wednesday approved the county’s 2026 budget along with budgets for the county’s special districts, following a lengthy public hearing that included input from residents and agencies that receive county funds.

Commissioners briefly debated whether to table final approval in order to review certain line items but ultimately voted to adopt the budget as presented.

The 2026 county budget totals just under $90 million, with ad valorem taxes making up just over $29 million. The mill levy is set at 37.767 mills, which equates to $434.32&nbsp;in property tax for every $100,000 of appraised property value.

In addition to the county budget, commissioners also approved the special districts’ 2026 budgets.

On the consent agenda, the board approved:

A construction contract with MBC Construction for the new EMS station just west of 5th and Adams.

An $880,280 bid from Wycoff Construction of St. John for a four-inch water line connection between the City of Hutchinson and Yoder Water District 101. Commissioner Randy Parks noted that a most of these funds will be reimbursed through grants from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.&nbsp;

They also adopted a new policy for the Reno County Parks and Recreation Fund.&nbsp;

The next Reno County Commission meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24.

County Commission approves 2026 county, special district budgets

Darla D. Neal, 83, died September 8, 2025, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born January 22, 1942, in Newton, to Luther D. and Gladys M. (Hatch) McJilton. &nbsp;

Darla graduated from Newton High School in 1959, and the University of Kansas in 1963, with her Bachelor of Science degree. &nbsp;Darla was an outstanding debater in high school and college (this won’t surprise anyone who knew her). &nbsp; As a senior in high school, she and her partner took runner-up at state after beating her future husband, John, in the semi-finals. &nbsp;Darla was offered a scholarship to debate at KU. &nbsp; She was named KU’s Outstanding Debater her freshman year. &nbsp;While at KU, Darla was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta where she met many of her lifelong friends. &nbsp;She also participated in Rock Chalk Revue. &nbsp;&nbsp;

It was also at KU where she met the first love of her life, John Neal. &nbsp; Darla &amp; John knew each other from debate &amp; forensics competitions in high school. &nbsp;Her sophomore year she agreed to go on a “blind date” only after learning that it was with John. &nbsp;Darla and John got engaged on Christmas Eve their senior year in college and were married on July 20, 1963 in Newton. &nbsp;Shortly after their wedding, Darla &amp; John moved to Madrid, Spain for a year while John was studying abroad on the Fulbright Scholarship. &nbsp;While in Madrid, Darla taught English at the American School and Berlitz Language School. Upon arriving back in the United States, Darla taught middle school and high school English &amp; Social Studies before they had children.

In 1969, Darla and John moved to Hutchinson, KS, where she lived the rest of her life. Darla was a major advocate for Hutchinson, Hutchinson schools, and numerous community projects and organizations. &nbsp; She served as President of Reno County’s American Cancer Society, President of Leukemia &amp; Lymphoma Society, President of Hutchinson Community Foundation, President of the Hutchinson PTA, President of Wesley Towers Board of Directors, and served 12 years on the USD 308 Board of Education with two stints as president. &nbsp;She participated in Leadership Kansas, Leadership Hutchinson, &amp; received the Altrusa Community Leadership Award in 2007. &nbsp;She was a member of P. E. O. Chapter BY and Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. She also started three successful businesses in three totally non-related industries!

Darla was a teacher, entrepreneur, consultant, artist, and business owner, but her proudest title was “mom”. &nbsp;After Darla &amp; John’s first son, Michael, was born in 1968, every day her number one focus was her children. &nbsp;Never was this more apparent than after Michael was diagnosed with leukemia and during his subsequent treatment. &nbsp;Although Michael passed away in 1972, Darla was impacted by the experience after seeing the “good” in so many people who wanted to help and support Michael &amp; their family. &nbsp; Darla carried that emphasis and focus with her the rest of her life. &nbsp;The only title that was in contention with “mom” for her favorite was “Nana”. &nbsp;She was an incredible force, constant champion, and #1 fan for each and every one of her children &amp; grandchildren. &nbsp;It was never about her and always about making the world better for others. Darla’s goal was to make an impact, be an advocate, and leave her mark on Hutchinson, Reno County, and the lives of her family &amp; everyone she met. &nbsp;

John died September 4, 2005, after they shared 42 years of marriage. &nbsp;On a riverboat trip to Ukraine in 2007, Darla was fortunate enough to meet the second love of her life, Stanley Wingate. &nbsp; Darla &amp; Stan were married on April 19, 2008, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. &nbsp;Both had endured the heartbreak of losing their first spouses to cancer and felt incredibly blessed to find a second love who they could share their lives with. &nbsp; Even after being separated when Darla was moved into Memory Care at Wesley Towers, Stan would walk over to her room everyday so they could spend the day together. &nbsp;Darla &amp; Stan enjoyed 17 years of marriage. &nbsp;

Darla is survived by: husband, Stanley Wingate of Hutchinson; sons, David Neal (Karin) of Hutchinson and Matthew Neal of Rose Hill; grandchildren, Jack Neal, Katherine Neal, Benjamin Neal, and Andrew G. Neal, Jaden Neal, Andrew L. Neal, and Elizabeth Neal; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her parents; husband, John Neal; son Michael John Neal; and sisters, Kay Lachenmayr, Loretta Bowersock, Shirley Gates, and Barbara Fabic.

Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 15, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson. Private graveside service at Memorial Park will take place. &nbsp;Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

Darla’s goal was to make an impact, be an advocate, and leave her mark on Hutchinson, Reno County, and the lives of her family &amp; everyone she met. &nbsp;John died September 4, 2005, after they shared 42 years of marriage. &nbsp;On a riverboat trip to Ukraine in 2007, Darla was fortunate enough to meet the second love of her life, Stanley Wingate. &nbsp; Darla &amp; Stan were married on April 19, 2008, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. &nbsp;Both had endured the heartbreak of losing their first spouses to cancer and felt incredibly blessed to find a second love who they could share their lives with. &nbsp; Even after being separated when Darla was moved into Memory Care at Wesley Towers, Stan would walk over to her room everyday so they could spend the day together. &nbsp;Darla &amp; Stan enjoyed 17 years of marriage. &nbsp;Darla is survived by: husband, Stanley Wingate of Hutchinson; sons, David Neal (Karin) of Hutchinson and Matthew Neal of Rose Hill; grandchildren, Jack Neal, Katherine Neal, Benjamin Neal, and Andrew G. Neal, Jaden Neal, Andrew L. Exploring Careers at the Perfect AgeMiddle school is a critical time for career exploration. By 8th grade, Kansas students complete an Individual Plan of Study (IPS) to guide high school coursework and career planning—a process that can feel overwhelming.&nbsp;Transfr VR&nbsp;provides hands-on, interactive experiences in skilled trades, healthcare, agriculture, cosmetology, and more, giving students a glimpse into local job opportunities and the skills required to succeed.

“Students are excited to explore careers using virtual reality,”&nbsp;said Ms. Gray.&nbsp;“The technology allows them to see in-demand jobs and potential salaries. Careers like correctional officers come up a lot, and students are curious to see what that entails. The&nbsp;VR&nbsp;experience is tailored to meet the demands of our local workforce.”

Community &amp; Workforce ImpactTransfr VR&nbsp;is part of the&nbsp;Youth Career Discovery Partnership, a first-of-its-kind statewide collaboration with FFA, 4-H, Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), Hutchinson YMCA, and Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson. With legislative support, Kansas has allocated $320,000 in year one to pilot the program, supplemented by $160,000 in private matching funds from organizations including the Kansas Health Foundation, Kansas Farm Bureau, and Kansas Corn Growers Association.

“Transfr VR&nbsp;gives students a clear vision of what different careers actually look like,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Nathan Henry, Principal of HMS-7.&nbsp;“It’s an incredible way for them to explore their interests and make informed decisions. Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Launches Transfr VR Pilot

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of East 2nd Avenue and North Poplar.

In 1901, brothers C.N. &amp; K.E. Sentney moved to Hutchinson from Indiana and started a grocery store at 109-115 S. Main.

Business went so well that, in 1904, they built a three-story, 40,000-square-foot building at 126 E. 2nd.

On Jan. 1, 1909, they incorporated as the Sentney Wholesale Grocery Co. The first photo shows their horse-drawn delivery wagon about 1908.

The second photo shows the company's transition to gas trucks in 1912.

The third photo shows the business corner in 1929.

About 1940, the Sentney branding was sold off to Pioneer Foods.

In 1944, the building became the Western Foods, Western Canning Co., an offshoot of the Vinegar Works just north of the railroad tracks. The fourth photo shows the building in that transition period.

The fifth photo shows the Western Foods building in 1963.

They were active there until the early 1970s.

The building has housed many businesses since. Many of you might remember when it was the "Purple Pickle" private club in 1993.

In 2008, it was remodeled into apartments. The sixth photo shows the 126 E. 2nd building today known as the "Sentney Lofts." The building is currently owned by the Sentney Re Holdings L.L.C. of Denver, Colorado.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Sentney Grocery - Vol. 139

After heavy rains earlier this week left parking lots unusable and fairgoers wading through mud, the Kansas State Fair is pressing ahead with a full schedule of events, music, and history.

On Tuesday, more than two dozen school bands performed inside the People’s Bank and Trust Arena, including Rose Hill and Sedan.&nbsp;

"I talked to one band director who indicated they got up in the dark of the morning or the night, whichever, and drove three and a half hours to Hutchinson, and they had instructions to be back in time for football practice." said Longtime fair historian and foundation member Richard Shank.

Shank, who first attended the fair in 1957, recalled memories of the infamous 1965 flood that left parts of the grounds under several feet of water. “We’ve seen wet years before, but the leadership team has handled it well, bussing in folks from the Hutchinson Sports Arena lots,” he said.

This year marks the 112th Kansas State Fair, first held in 1913. With the exception of 2020, when COVID-19 forced a cancellation, the fair has continued even through wartime gas rationing. Fair leaders, including General Manager Bryan Schulz in his fifth year, have overseen significant improvements in recent years. Projects by the Kansas State Fair Foundation include the 1861 Club, restoration of the historic Lear House, Capper Cooperative Park, and ongoing work at the Bison Building.

Despite the weather challenges, crowds topped 100,000 over the opening weekend. Shuttle buses continue to run daily from the Hutchinson Sports Arena, Uptown Mall, and Bold 3PL, with handicapped parking available near Gate 5.

Entertainment has included wrestling, Christian rock group Josiah Queen, and the Oak Ridge Boys — the act that has performed at the Kansas State Fair more times than any other. Upcoming events include the Governor’s Awards and a Pronto Pup eating contest at noon on Sunday.

For Shank, the fair remains a place where history, community, and commerce all meet. “We’ve bought everything from tractors to lawnmowers here for the farm,” he said. “The fair has always been about more than food and fun — it’s where Kansas comes together.”

Current ticketholders do not need to take any action—tickets remain valid for the adjusted time. Those still looking to attend can purchase tickets at <a href="https://www.etix.com/ticket/v/12251/kansas-state-fair">etix.com</a>.

Fair officials say the change comes in response to ongoing closures of on-grounds parking lots following heavy rainfall earlier this week. Handicapped parking will remain available near Gates 5 and 9.

State Fair changes time for Josiah Queen, Ben Fuller concert

Marvin Edward Green, 91 1/2, was born on March 1, 1934, to Kenneth Edward and Ruth Alma (Reasoner) Green, at his grandparent’s home in Hill City, Kansas. He passed away peacefully at Legend of Hutchinson Senior Living in Hutchinson, KS, on September 6, 2025.

As a young boy, Marvin moved with his family to Downs, KS, where he graduated from high school in 1952. Although he seldom spoke of it, he was an athlete at Downs, and later played semi-pro baseball, as shortstop. After graduation, he attended the College of Emporia, intent on teaching. Sometime during his senior year, he determined teaching was not for him and left without graduating. Subsequent army service was cut short by a car accident in 1961, which resulted in the loss of his left eye. He was honorably discharged in 1962.

He married Joy Ellen Morrison on November 30, 1968. Together they raised two sons, Richard Joseph (RJ) of Edwardsville, KS, and Scott Hayden. Scott preceded him in death in 1993 as did Joy in 2004.

On December 6, 2009, Marvin married Lana Jo Sibley in Gardner, KS. She survives as do RJ, and two brothers, Allan of Ottawa, KS, and Larry (Nancy) of Salina, KS. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Holly R. Ross, of Belton, MO, and two Great Grandchildren. Also surviving are stepdaughter Jamie Baker (Jeremy) of Hutchinson, KS, and two step grandchildren.

Marvin and Joy lived in Spring Hill, KS, for many years, raising cattle on the farm in Johnson County. He also worked for several different enterprises in the Spring Hill area before becoming an owner of an Air Freight business. He retired at 70 and sold the farm in 2008.

He and Lana made their home in Paola until earlier this year when they relocated to Hutchinson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at&nbsp; Bruce Funeral Home in Spring Hill on September 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Care has been entrusted to Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp;

Several Hutchinson-area schools are represented in the Kansas Volleyball Association’s first rankings of the regular season, released Wednesday.

In Class 3A, Hesston debuted at No. 3 with a 6-1 start, while Halstead, the defending state champs and preseason No. 1, sits at No. 4 after opening 3-3. In Class 2A, Moundridge is off to a 7-0 start and entered the poll at No. 2, followed closely by Inman at No. 6 after a 5-2 opening stretch. Pretty Prairie claimed the No. 10 spot in Class 1A Division I at 4-4, while Little River held firm at No. 1 in 1A Division I with a 3-1 record.

🏐 Several Reno County teams earn spots in first KVA volleyball rankings of 2025

Donna Harper - Dirks, 97, of Hutchinson, passed away September 7, 2025, at Wesley&nbsp;Towers, in Hutchinson, KS after a brief illness. She was born April 18th, 1928, in Hutchinson, KS to Earl and Clara Feese. &nbsp;

Donna graduated from Hutchinson High School 1945. Donna lived most of her life in Hutchinson working for Southwestern Bell Telephone and later as a PBX operator at Cessna Fluid Power. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary #68 and a member of Park Place Christian Church. &nbsp;

She married Brad Harper in 1946 after he returned from the war. He passed&nbsp;in 1988. She then married Leonard Dirks in 1993 and he passed in 2007. &nbsp;

Donna is survived by one son Steven B. Harper (Karen) of Goodyear, &nbsp;Arizona. Two Stepdaughters, Jo Martin (Dan) of Salina, KS and Jan Moore (Doug) of Emporia, Kansas. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Rodney and&nbsp;Larry Feese, and stepdaughter Carol Heinlein. &nbsp;

Memorial Service for Donna will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel. Cremation has taken place and Elliott Mortuary is in charge of the service with burial to follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. &nbsp;

The Hutchinson Sports Arena and Stringer Fine Arts Center parking lots are currently full, though fairgoers can continue to check for openings as spaces become available.&nbsp;

Additional parking is now open at two off-site locations: the southwest corner of the Hutchinson Uptown Mall near Hutchinson Vintage Market, and the east lot of Bold 3PL at 1529 East 17th Avenue.&nbsp;

Shuttle service to the Fairgrounds will run from these lots until 10 p.m., with all drop-offs at Gate 9 on Plum Street. Officials caution visitors not to wait until the last shuttle to arrive, as the final bus will leave promptly at 10 p.m.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Community College charter and Dragon buses are covering the Uptown Mall route, while a separate HCC charter bus is serving the Bold 3PL lot. The Durham School Bus will continue to operate the Sports Arena route only. Longer wait times are expected with the extended routes.&nbsp;

Handicapped parking remains available near Gate 5 on State Fair Road and Gate 9 on Plum Street with proper placards displayed.&nbsp;

Fair officials thank the public for their patience and cooperation.&nbsp;

Following heavy rainfall on the Kansas State Fairgrounds, the Kansas State Fair has announced that all on-grounds parking lots are closed until further notice, with the exception of handicapped parking near Gate 5 on State Fair Road.

Alternate Parking: Guests may park on the west side of the Hutchinson Sports Arena, 700 E. 11th Hutchinson, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9.

Shuttle Service: Starting at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9 buses will run approximately every 15 minutes, transporting patrons to and from the Fairgrounds with drop-off and pick-up at Gate 9 on Plum Street.

Handicapped Parking: Parking near Gate 5 on State Fair Road will remain available for handicapped guests only. Guest must display their handicapped placard in order to park in this area.

Will Call: The Will Call office at Lot C on Plum Street will remain open and accessible.

“The recent rainfall has made our on-grounds parking lots unsafe and unusable,” said Bryan Schulz, Kansas State Fair General Manager. “We are grateful to local partners including the City of Hutchinson and Hutchinson Community College for providing alternate parking solutions, and we appreciate our guests’ flexibility and patience in using the shuttle services.”
