BARTON AND STAFFORD COUNTY— A resurfacing project suspended last year for the winter will resume on U.S. 281 in Barton and Stafford counties on Friday, May 31.

The final phase of the Kansas Department of Transportation project involves a chip seal and pavement marking on the remaining 11 miles of the project. The work is expected to begin at Southeast 30th&nbsp;Road in Barton County and end at the K-19 junction south of Great Bend in Stafford County.

The work is expected to be completed around June 12.

During the work, traffic will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot car, and motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and prepare for delays of up to 15 minutes.

Venture Corp., of Great Bend, is the primary contractor for the $1.57 million project.

Final phase of U.S. 281 project in Barton, Stafford counties to begin Friday

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp; The Newton City Commission this week approved a settlement with MetroPlains Properties on a loan used for the development of Lincoln Park Apartments. 

In 2002, the City received Community Development Block Grant funds from the State that were issued as an interest-free loan to MetroPlains to help redevelop Lincoln School into income-qualified apartments. The company since paid $5,100 on the $200,000 loan. In December 2023, the company asked the City Commission to consider forgiving $94,900 of the loan; the Commission rejected the request, and the City moved forward with foreclosure.

The City Commission on Tuesday agreed to accept MetroPlains’ follow-up offer to pay $169,900 on the remaining $194,900 debt. This releases the City’s lien on the property and facilitates its sale, which has been pending for some time. Commissioners said they saw this as a reasonable offer that will save further legal costs and will resolve the issue quickly for the benefit of the apartment residents.

Newton reaches settlement on apartment building

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On June 14, 2024, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., the Cosmosphere will celebrate Sally’s Night, the 41st Anniversary of astronaut Dr. Sally Ride becoming the first American woman in space. While remembering Dr. Ride’s achievements, the event will also spotlight women working in STEM related fields.

Cosmosphere Curator Shannon Whetzel will share stories of the “Rocket Girls,” a group of human computers who worked at NASA and JPL from the 1940s through the 1960s.

The event includes cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, and appetizers. It is free to Cosmosphere members and fifteen dollars for non-members. Speaker Alan Petersen will discuss Widforss’ life and work. It is one of great triumph in realistic painting, tinged with the tragedy of an early death and later obscurity. The talk is a chance to learn the compelling story of a Swedish expatriate who fell in love with the landscapes of the American West.

Sterling to host county wide garage sale

Each generation in a long-time farming family adapts to the challenges and opportunities of their time. Growing up on his family’s operation south of Hays, Wyatt Grabbe watched his father, grandfather and uncle shift from conventional tillage to no-till, experiment with cover crops and biologics and take advantage of the latest varieties and technology. As he prepares to enter his second year at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, he plans to take what he’s learned in his associate’s degree program in precision agriculture back to the farm - making him a great candidate for the David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship.&nbsp;

“The David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship continues a legacy of dedication to our mission at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center,” said Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin.

“David was passionate about continuous innovations by and for Kansas wheat farmers, and this year’s scholarship recipient certainly fits that mold.”&nbsp;

The David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship funds one $1,000 scholarship to a current undergraduate or graduate student from Kansas who is pursuing a career in the field of agriculture. Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at any two- or four-year college or university in Kansas.&nbsp;

The scholarship memorializes the legacy of David Radenberg, a lifelong wheat farmer from Claflin, where his family has farmed for more than 100 years. He represented central Kansas on the Kansas Wheat Commission from April 2011 to March 2020, including serving as chairman from August 2018 to May 2019. Radenberg was also a founding board member of the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation.

In 2013, Radenberg also visited multiple Pacific Rim countries to promote U.S. wheat. The contrast between third-world poverty he saw in thriving modern cities left an impression on him and reinforced his support of wheat research to help feed a hungry world.

Grabbe’s family has also embraced the latest wheat research to aid their operation. The family has planted wheat test plots for Bayer CropScience and K-State Research and Extension. His father and uncle have entered the National Wheat Yield Contest, organized by the National Wheat Foundation. In the 2022 contest, his uncle John took second place in Kansas dryland wheat with an entry of WestBred WB4422 that yielded 103.24 bushels per acre, beating out his father Matt, who placed third with an entry of WestBred WB4792 that yielded 97.88 bushels per acre. An entry of the same variety that yielded 79.18 bushels per acre earned his father second prize in Kansas in the 2023 contest.&nbsp;

“These two people have inspired me to come back to the farm after pursuing my associate’s degree in precision agriculture,” Wyatt wrote in his application essay.&nbsp;

In addition to the farming operation, he helps with another family venture called Stone Post Ag, which sells Beck’s Hybrids seed, Win biologics and Opti Lube fuel additive. Grabbe hopes to further add to the family’s business diversification by adding soil sampling, aerial mapping by drone and potential crop scouting - after completing his

degree program at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland.&nbsp;

“I want to be able to help farmers make more efficient and healthier choices when it comes to crops,” he wrote. “I still have a lot to learn, but my strong work ethic and my love for farming and cattle will keep driving me to do better for my family, our operation and, in the future, my customers.”&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The donut day fundraiser for the Hutchinson Salvation Army is coming up Friday morning, May 31.

"At our thrift store, we'll be having our donut eating competition," said Major Paul James. "It's a lot nicer to be outside and not inside. Our first year here, we did have it inside and it was a little stuffy, but it was a great time anyway."

There are three ways for contestants to win.

"Eating the most donuts, of course," said James. "Jared Heinen has won the past two years. Actually, not by much, but he's eaten a lot. Either way, last year he ate 11 and a half donuts in five minutes. That's quite the feat. My personal best is six, so that'll tell you something. Then the next one is People's Choice Award. Those who donate online or get donations online the most in that, then they win. Then, Raising the Most Dough, which is people that bring cash or checks the day of the event, whoever has the most in their little bucket in front of them, then they win that trophy."

The Salvation Army has a regional camp just outside of the Kansas City area. The money raised helps send kids to that camp.

"It's actually one of my first jobs," James said. I worked there four summers as a teenager and then when I was in college as well. We're looking forward to the opportunity to send kids to camp. It's only $10 if they use our promotional code, our discount code, which is HUTCH24. Our main goal is to make it affordable to send kids to camp. There's a lot of struggles that families are going through, especially in the summer months."

The event starts at 9 a.m. Friday in front of the Salvation Army Thrift Store at&nbsp;200 South Main in Hutchinson.

Salt City Splash closed Thursday

GARDEN PLAIN AND IUKA, Kan. — Members of Farmers Cooperative Elevator Company – Garden Plain (FCEC) approved a proposal to merge with Kanza Cooperative Association (Kanza) during a special meeting in Cheney on May 23. The vote received the required two-thirds majority required by Kansas law –180 affirmative and 85 dissenting.

“We had an excellent turnout from the membership and are very pleased that the majority approved the merger,” said Dixie Brewster, Board President of FCEC. “This vote has set our cooperative on the best track to maintaining high-quality service and products to our members, stay the employer of choice in our communities, and protect our members’ equity for generations to come.”

This vote was the final step in approval of the merger proposed by the FCEC and Kanza boards, who unanimously signed the definitive agreement for a merger in March. The organizations will officially be combined into one entity on September 1, 2024.

"We are excited for the synergy that is possible as we bring these two strong cooperatives together,” said Alvin Neville, Board Chair of Kanza. “We have so much in common from geography to service to strong financial positions. Together we will create a better cooperative for our members, employees, and the communities we serve.

Based on the latest full fiscal year, the combined cooperative's agronomy, grain, energy, and feed business is projected to generate $407 million in sales with $285 million in total assets. The combined entity will operate from 31 locations and employ 204 full-time personnel.

The administrative headquarters of the combined cooperative will remain Iuka, KS, and it will retain the name Kanza Cooperative Association. Alan Woodard will continue as the CEO, and Rusty Morehead, the current FCEC GM, will hold a key leadership position as a key employee.

FCEC and Kanza Coop merger approved

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting,&nbsp;the Newton City Commission finalized a 10-year tax abatement for Bunting Magnetics most recent expansion.

Bunting recently completed its redevelopment of a 12,000-square-foot building at 1001 S. Spencer, which it purchased in 2022. The expansion represents a capital investment of $2.2 million and the creation of six new jobs. The tax abatement exempts property taxes for 10 years on the increase in valuation created by the improvements.

Spencer, which it purchased in 2022. The expansion represents a capital investment of $2.2 million and the creation of six new jobs. Newton finalizes tax abatement for Bunting expansion

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The farmers and ranchers of the state’s leading agriculture advocacy organization on Thursday announced their endorsement of incumbent Rep. Ron Estes in Kansas’ 4th District.

The formal endorsement came from Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) political action committee, Voters Organized to Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF), comprised of active farmer/rancher members elected by their peers from each of KFB’s 10 geographic districts. 

“During his time on the Hill, Congressman Ron Estes has proven himself to be a genuine friend of the farmer, especially on the Ways and Means Committee where he’s worked to open doors for agricultural trade,” says KFB President Joe Newland. “Estes’ brand of leadership continues to gain him respect and influence, as shown by robust grassroots support from county Farm Bureau organizations in south-central Kansas.”

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of 14th Avenue and North Main.

In the 1920s, Clarence Everett was a successful grocer with three local stores. In 1929, he decided to expand even further and have the Stamey Construction Company build a new structure at 1323 N. Main for his new food market. The first photo shows this new venture at opening.

In 1939, J.S. Dillon and Sons had a nice grocery store at 1227 N. Main where Engineering Consultants now resides. Ray Dillon wanted to expand both his store size and marketplace share. Dillon made Clarence Everett an offer he couldn't refuse. Dillon purchased the Everett Food Market in December of 1939 and remodeled the building in 1940.

He hired M.C. Foy and Sons Construction to remodel and add on to the 1323 N. Main building for $12,000. March 11, 1940, was the grand opening of Dillons Store #8. The second photo shows the store today, now addressed as 1319-21 N. Main, still active after 84 years of service.

The building and property is now owned by Dillon Companies Inc. c/o Kroger Company, Cincinnati, Ohio.

HAVEN, Kan. — A Reno County company is looking to expand in its hometown.

"Our Greater Hutch team, Lauren Storm, has been working with Jitana Graf and the Haven Economic Development folks," said Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel.&nbsp; "They have their own economic development committee in Haven that employs a half time economic developer, and Jitana has been working with one of their mainstay companies in Haven, Haven Steel, and they are looking at the potential for an expansion. In order to give them the confidence that in order to invest in Haven and some things they want to do to expand their facility, they began exploring industrial revenue bonds as well. They're working with bond attorney Gilmore and Bell, and right now I think they're looking at about a $3 million potential expansion, and along with that, about $5 million of new potential equipment to help them really continue to just grow."

Haven Steel wants to see the people that have committed to that community be able to stay there.

"They've got a great footprint in Haven," Teufel said. "They are scheduled to have the city council in Haven look at that project at their meeting on June 3rd. It involves a cost benefit analysis of weighing that investment, as well as some new jobs. I believe there's about 30 jobs forecasted with that project. It's a nice size expansion. Recently, with the closure of the Restonic facility, there were some jobs lost in Haven. There's really been an effort on Haven companies to look at, how can they re-employ people? How can they grow? I really applaud the ownership and the management at Haven Steel for really looking at doubling down their investment."

Haven Steel looking to expand

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The EAGLE Media Blood Drive in Hutchinson Wednesday was a success. According to Tiffany Davison with the American Red Cross, the goal for the drive was 28 units, with 23 units collected, which could impact up to 69 lives.

If someone missed donating at the drive on Wednesday, they can donate next week at the Hutchinson Community Blood Drive. That drive is&nbsp;Monday, June 3 from noon to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday June 5 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the&nbsp;First Presbyterian Church at 201 E Sherman in Hutchinson.

EAGLE Media blood drive a success

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Center of the Nation Model Railroad Expo is this weekend at the Pride of Kansas building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be layouts for everything from Tiny Z-scale all the way up to Lionel trains. Lonnie Demoret is bringing his O-Gauge layout again this year.

"There are six lanes of traffic that the kids get to run on a tablet," Demoret said. "I have six different types of trains that run on there. On Saturday, I usually run a Challenger on the outside lane and on Sunday, we run the Big Boy on the outside lane. It's an opportunity to run two of the largest trains that they have ever built and produced."

The goal is to get new kids interested, so all children 12 and under are free to attend with an adult admission. Admission for 13 and over is $8 a piece, or two adults for $15. There will be vendors from across the country there for train enthusiasts to buy from, too. If you have a Lionel train, there is one vendor of particular interest this year, according to Mark Buckley with Toy Depot.

"A good friend of mine, Sgt. Schultz will be here," Buckley said. "He will be here with his parts. He does Lionel parts. He carries probably around 40,000 different pieces. If you have a Lionel train that needs some repair, he can do that, right there on the spot. It's something I can't do at the store, but he will be there for two days."

Model railroad show this weekend

KIOWA AND PRATT COUNTY — Two resurfacing projects on U.S. 54/400 between Greensburg and Pratt will start soon in Kiowa and Pratt counties.

One of the Kansas Department of Transportation projects – a milling and hot-mix-asphalt overlay -- will be on U.S. 54/400 from the east city limits of Greensburg to the Kiowa/Pratt county line. The length is almost 14 miles.

The other project – an ultra-thin bonded asphalt surface -- will be on U.S. 54/400 from the Kiowa/Pratt county line to the west city limits of Pratt. The length is almost 13 miles.

The project in Kiowa County is expected to begin around June 10 and be completed around July 1.

During the work in Kiowa County, traffic will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot car, and motorists should be prepared to stop and expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

U.S. 54/400 resurfacing is set in Kiowa, Pratt counties

HARVEY COUNTY — According to the Hesston Police Department, at approximately 06:10 a.m. Wednesday they received a call of shots fired in the area of exit 40 on Lincoln Blvd, just off of I-135.

Police made contact with the victim and learned that a road rage incident on northbound I-135 ended with another driver pulling a gun and then discharging that firearm. Police believe that the round discharged went into the berm of the interchange.  Using the department's Flock Camera in the area they were able to develop a suspect and witnesses.  One of the witnesses had video footage of part of the incident. 

 With all of that information, police secured a search warrant and with the help of Moundridge Police Department&nbsp;arrested the suspect on Aggravated Assault and Criminal Discharge of a Firearm and collected evidence.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Road rage incident results in Wednesday arrest

&nbsp;RENO COUNTY — At approximately 8 a.m. Wednesday, deputies from the Reno County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an injury accident at the intersection of Yoder Road and Eales Road. This is in central Reno County at the north end of the Arkansas River bridge. 

Deputies discovered two vehicles, one a white passenger car and the other a small red truck had collided head on at this location. Both drivers appeared to be trapped in their vehicles and had serious injuries. Reno County Fire District #8, Hutchinson Fire Department, and Reno County EMS assisted these drivers with their injuries. 

Eagle Med flew one patient to a Wichita Hospital and the other patient was taken by Reno County EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. 

The South Hutchinson Police Department also assisted in handling this accident.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wednesday morning accident sends two to hospital

PAWNEE COUNTY– Jason Lance Hummel, 44 of Hutchinson, appeared Tuesday afternoon in the Pawnee County District Court before Magistrate Judge Julie Cowell, for his alleged involvement in a theft at the Big R Store in Larned, Kansas on February 18, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

&nbsp;Hummel entered a Guilty plea to the charge of Theft. After determining there was a factual basis, Judge Cowell accepted the plea and sentenced Hummel to twelve months on probation and ordered him to pay $5,326.00 in restitution joint and several with his co-defendants.

The theft was investigated by the Larned Police Department. At approximately 6:30 p.m. on February 18, two men entered the Big R store, 908 East 14th in Larned, according to a media release from Larned Police. 

Both men then filled their shopping carts but left the store without paying. Video surveillance cameras showed the men placing the merchandise in the back of a newer model silver Jeep Cherokee and then traveling east from Larned. Two female subjects were observed getting out of the Jeep while the men were in the Big R store.

On May 10, Hummell was arrested without incident in Hutchinson. Also charged in the Theft are Garritt Ward Kent McConnell, 44;&nbsp; Kyla Ann Larralde, 20 and Desirea Nicole Larralde, 19 all of Hutchinson. McConnell is currently being held in the Reno County Jail.

High Point Road bridge closed

The Christian Church in Kansas announced Wednesday that Rev. Dr. David Dubovich has been called to serve as the region’s Associate Regional Minister. His first day will be June 1, 2024.

In this role, David will provide pastoral care, search and call, and congregational support to the Central and High Plains Districts. Additionally, David will work with clergy care ministries regarding clergy standing, ordination, commissioning, and scholarships. He will also work with clergy, Disciples Men, and Spirituality retreat planning teams.

David has been serving as the Acting Associate Regional Minister for the region since November 2023. Before that, he was pastor of Park Place Christian Church in Hutchinson and served in numerous regional leadership positions. He previously served churches in Missouri, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Virginia.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Point Park University, a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, and a doctoral degree from Saint Paul School of Theology. A native of Pennsylvania, David and his wife Cindy live in Hutchinson.

Hutchinson minister gets regional post

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Administrator Randy Partington explained to Hutch Post Wednesday the purpose of the full day of presentations to the Board of County Commissioners.

"Today is a chance for some of the partner agencies or some of the bigger departments, departments that have changes in their budgets to present their case to the county commission," Partington said. "Explain what's in their budget and answer any questions the commissioners have on changes to the budget, or discuss, if cuts could be made, what would the impact be?"

One big area of the budget is long-term projects, also known as CIP.

"Capital Improvement Plan, or Capital Improvement Projects, different people call it different things," Partington said. "Those are items, usually over $20,000, have a life of over five years. The capital projects are building maintenance items, vehicles, large purchases that are not ongoing, bought every year."

The actual draft from Partington based on feedback from the meeting Wednesday may be about a month away.

"That will probably be toward the end of June, early July, based on the timeline the state gives us to notify the county clerk whether or not we're going to hold to revenue neutral, or we're going to exceed that," Partington said. "That work will take place, as soon as we're done with the meeting today, we'll start running numbers and then wait until the assessed valuation comes in, in early June."

According to the controlling statute, on or before July 20, the governing body shall notify the county clerk of its proposed intent to exceed the revenue neutral rate and provide the date, time and location of the public hearing and its proposed tax rate.
