GREAT BEND – The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team posted the ninth-largest margin of victory and head coach John Ontjes reached a milestone victory on Friday on the first day of the Barton Classic.

The Blue Dragons shot a season-high 51.8 percent and nailed a season-high nine 3-pointers while forcing a season's-best 30 turnovers in a 106-33 victory over Labette at the Barton Gym.

Hutchinson improved to 4-0 to start the season. The Blue Dragons will take on Redlands (4-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Redlands lost to Barton on Friday night.

Hutchinson's 73-point margin of victory is the ninth largest in program history and the second largest in series history with Labette.

The Dragons scored 100 points in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2013-14 season when the accomplished that against Northwest Tech and Neosho County. The Blue Dragons hit 48 of 83 total shots, going 9 of 31 from 3-point range and 11 of 14 from the foul line.

Ontjes earned his 450th win on the Blue Dragon bench on Friday. His win total ranks second in both the KJCCC and Region VI to Cloud County's Brett Erkenbrack.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/denison_madie_a39r">Madi Denison</a>&nbsp;led a season-high six Blue Dragon in double figures against Labette with her first career double-double. Coming off the bench, Denison scored a career-high 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting. She tied a season high with 13 assists.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;was a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. Duffy was 8 of 12 shooting from the field.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;scored 16 points with two three-pointers. Smith added season highs of six assists and five steals.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/muggeridge_akaysha_rpaz">Akaysha Muggeridge</a>&nbsp;posted season highs of 14 points and 4 of 8 shooting from the 3-point line. Muggeridge had four steals, three assists and three rebounds.

The Blue Dragons had a season-low 51 rebounds, out-rebounding Labette 51-27. The Dragons also had a season-low six turnovers with season highs of 26 assists and 18 steals.

The Dragons limited Labette to 23.3 percent shooting (10 of 43), 2 of 11 from 3-point range and 11 of 20 from the foul line. Aysis Gartmond had a team-high 12 points to lead the Cardinals.

The Blue Dragons led 22-7 after one quarter and 47-11 at halftime. The Dragons scored a season-high 36 points in the third quarter to lead 83-26 after three quarters.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons post ninth-largest margin of victory in rout of Labette

On November 8, 2023, Eunice Jane Unruh Esau left us to join her loved ones with Jesus in heaven. She was born to Harrison and Anna (Schroeder) Unruh in Hillsboro, Kansas, on Dec. 23, 1928, an early Christmas present. Having a birthday around Christmas wasn’t always a joy for Eunice. As a child, she would often plan her birthday during the summer inviting friends over and forgetting to inform her parents until after the guests started arriving at their farm between Durham and Hillsboro. But that was Eunice: full of ideas fueled by her high energy. Being the youngest, she might even have been spoiled by her two older brothers, Chester and Allen, and her older sister, Dorothy.

Things changed when Dorothy married Reinhold Schmidt and started her family. Eunice was still in grade school, but spent much of her time babysitting her nephew, Randy, and niece, Betta Ruth.

Eunice attended the Hillsboro schools and often would spend the winters with family in town. She especially enjoyed her cousin, Sylvia. They got into many scrapes together since both were ornery and boy crazy.

Eunice graduated from high school and attended Bethel College for two years where she met and married a handsome blonde, Willis “Cot” Esau, whom she first noticed on the Bethel College basketball team. They were married on the third floor of the administration building in the chapel on the Bethel College campus in 1948. Living in student housing and finishing up college found them busy as Eunice was working as a secretary to get “Cot” through college. Upon graduation, they moved to Ransom, Kansas where they had their first child, Sherry Sue. Willis was teaching high school chemistry and coaching. His second job was in Osage City where Eunice gave birth to Rex Dale.

With two children in tow, Eunice and Willis moved to Kansas City, where “Cot” attended UMKC School of Dentistry, and Eunice continued to mother while selling Tupperware. Vickie Lynn was born during this time. Their last move to Hutchinson was where Dr. W. R. Esau set up his practice and Eunice ran the household. Todd was born in 1963, and the family was complete.

Eunice wisely insisted her children were raised in the church. She attended First Mennonite in Hutchinson until she passed away. She was active, serving in many capacities, and always baking lots of zweibach which she would deliver to any guests inclined to visit her church or sell at the MCC Sale in the spring. Eunice was a friend to all. She never knew a stranger which was demonstrated by her conversational gifts. Often on family vacations, she would know everyone before leaving the resort. People fascinated her. Even in the last five years, when she suffered from dementia, she found joy in sitting in the lobby of the nursing home watching people come in and out of the building and greeting them with a friendly, “hi.”

Life blessed Eunice and Cot with 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and many friends who were like family. Eunice has watched many friends and family, including her beloved husband, Cot (2016) leave this earth, and now we can only imagine the celebration welcoming Eunice into heaven.

Her family was blessed to have a mother/mother-in-law, and grandmother with her energy and lust for life. Children are Sherry (Mark) Krehbiel of Salina, Rex (Connie) Esau of Austin, Vickie (Bob) Howard of Kansas City, and Todd (Julie) Esau of Hutchinson. Grandchildren are Mindy Burr, Kyle (Kara) Krehbiel, Jacob (Erin) Krehbiel, Kateisha (Fabian) Porta, Cole (Meghan) Esau, Travis (Jenni) Howard, Straton (Caroline) Howard, Halie (C.J.) Heinz, Jordan (Ashley) Esau, Natasha Esau, and Michaela Esau.

We will miss our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. We will miss her kisses, her eyes lighting up when we visited, and her winks. Yes, those special winks. There was one for everyone.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at First Mennonite Church, 52 Rambler Rd., Hutchinson, Kansas. Inurnment will take place in the columbarium at First Mennonite Church. Memorials may be given to First Mennonite Church or Bethel College and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E.30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS 67502. The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team plays outside the Sports Arena for the first time this early season with a pair of neutral-court contests this weekend at the Barton Classic.

The Blue Dragons (3-0) meets the NOC-Enid Jets (1-2) at 3 p.m. Friday at the Barton Gym. Hutchinson meets NOC-Tonkawa (3-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 2:45 each day. 

Sean Boston will have the call on KHUT-FM (102.9) on Friday and KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Hutchinson is off to a strong start with three victories to start the season. The Dragons shot a season-high 49.4 percent from the field on a 100-64 victory over the Allen Red Devils on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

Through three games, the Blue Dragons are allowing 76.7 points per game and have forced 30 or more turnovers in three-straight games.

The Blue Dragons are closing in on milestone victory No. 1,900. Hutchinson, the all-time NJCAA men’s basketball leader in victories, is at 1,897 wins.

Hutchinson head coach Tommy DeSalme is one victory shy of his 50th with the Blue Dragons, which would tie Tim Jankovich for 12th place on the career Blue Dragon coaching list.

NOC-Enid, Friday’s Barton Classic opponent, is 1-2 to start the season. The Jets are averaging 74.3 points, while allowing 77.7 points per game. Sophomore guard Cahlese Lee is Enid’s leading scorer 17.7 points per game.

NOC-Tonkawa (3-1 overall) is 2-0 against Jayhawk Conference opponents this season, defeating Seward County (77-56) and Cowley (89-83). The Mavericks are averaging 82.8 points offensively and 73.8 points defensively. Sophomore guard Jaevonte Campbell is averaging 32.5 points per game.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons travel to Great Bend for 1st road trip of the season

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College President Carter File announced on Thursday his intent to retire in 2024.

File submitted his request to the college board of trustees indicating his intent to retire effective August 31, 2024.

"My time at HutchCC has exceeded any expectations I may have had when we made the decision to come here. The leadership of the board, our faculty and staff, and of course the students has made coming to work every day a real joy," File said Thursday.

File is the college's seventh president. He started at HutchCC in 2005 as the Vice President of Finance and Operations. He was elevated to the presidency in July 2014. His retirement will end his more than 24-year career in higher education.

The college will conduct a national search to replace File. The search will be managed in-house and will be led by a search committee that will be named in the coming weeks.

The 3-0 Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball teams play its final preps before conference play opens in one week this weekend with neutral site games on Friday and Saturday at the Barton Classic in Great Bend.

The Blue Dragons garnered 67 rebounds against the Panthers, which ranks No. 3 on the Hutchinson single-game rebounds list.

Labette has gotten off to a tough start with decisive losses to Coffeyville, Independence and Eastern Oklahoma State. The Cardinals, who are in a transition year with a new coaching staff, has struggled offensively scoring 47.7 points per game. Defensively, Labette is allowing 87.0 points per game.

Redlands has three Division I victories and an NAIA JV victory in its 4-0 start. The Cougars, who led Hutchinson by nine points before the Dragons rallied last season in Great Bend to win 68-62, are averaging 72.0 points per game while allowing 53.5 points per contest.

Eldon Edward Pauls was born to Ed and Louise (Edigar) Pauls March 10, 1932 in Moundridge KS in McPherson County. Religion played an important part in the Pauls family and he attended church and Sunday School at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church all his early years. He attended school in McPherson County starting at Peaceful elementary and graduated from Moundridge High School in 1951. He enjoyed sports and agricultural classes in school and in 1952, traveled to Denver Colorado to do voluntary service at General Rose Hospital for 2 years. While there, Eldon discovered snow skiing and ice skating, spending a great deal of time among friends.

After coming home from Denver, he worked for Ediger Brother’s as well as Clinton Schmidt in construction. He also worked for Bell Telephone in Hutchinson. In 1955 when the offer came to farm with his brother Irv in Western Kansas, he did not hesitate. He and his brother worked together in Kalvesta and them formed a partnership and moved their operation to Ulysses, Kansas. While there they had their first experience farming with irrigation. They raised several crops that were new to them, including sugar beets and castor beans. They also raised a herd of sheep and fed cattle.

Eldon met Allene Ivy Day in Wichita, a friend and co-worker of this brother Herb’s wife, Joleen. Thus began a long distance romance that culminated in a marriage September 17th of 1961, after a year of dating. Starting their new life together in an old army barracks was an adventrue to be sure with lots of fun along the way with Irvin and his family living close by. They continued to farm and began a family with the adoption of Merrile Elaine in August of 1963. In 1964, a move to Garden City occurred due to a physician’s recommendation to leave farming related to a bad back. He worked there at St. Catherine’s Hospital in maintenance and also at Oswald’s Manufacturing and Ansel Cab doing welding. In February of 1966 they added to their family with the adoption of Luellen Joy.

In 1968, Eldon moved his family to Dodge City to begin work at BJ Manufacturing to continue to pursue a career in welding. There they purchased a ½ acre land plot and built a new home, which at that time was out of the city limits but was later annexed in to town. Soon after the cattle business dipped and BJ Manufacturing had a large lay off that included Eldon. He soon found work in the maintenance and grounds department at the Dodge City Community College. He continued his work there until he retired 23 years later in 1994. At the start of his employment the campus was brand new and Eldon participated in the building of dormitories, the Diseal mechanics building, the addition to the Fine Arts building, the Horse Science building and mentoring young athletes every year, who were under his tutelage.

All the while, at home, Eldon maintained a yard and garden that was the envy of the neighborhood ( the local police were especially interested in the large poppy crop) and encouraged his daughters to work in and enjoy the outdoors and nature. Always, from the time of birth, Eldon encouraged his daughters in their spiritual lives by providing an exemplary example of Christian Life. The family attended church at the College Heights Nazarene Church. Eldon served there as usher and on the Board of Trustees Many good times were shared with piano recitals, band performances and musicals as music was always valued in the Pauls home. Education was also an avenue encouraged and provided to his kids through college. In is own words, when asked what spiritual legacy he would like to leave, he responded, “The strength from the Lord I drew when I started farming on my own with Irv and when I had cancer. The Lord’s love for me and the never ending strength. I would like this dependence on the Lord to be passed to my children so that one day we can have a glorious reunion in Heaven.” Later he would say this included his grandchildren as well. Lou and her husband traveled to Kazakhstan to adopt two boys, Alex and Grant, from an orphanage there. Eldon supported the boys by attending their sporting events and all the other extracurricular and church activities as well as their love of mechanics.

In 2004, after they they moved to Hutchinson KS, they began to attend the South Hutchinson Mennonite Church, now known as Journey Mennonite. They developed friendships there that have lasted nearly 20 years by being involved in grow groups along the way. In their years together as a

family many happy times were spent in the Colorado Rockies and other Mountain ranges, their vacations in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, North and South Dakota and Wyoming as well as the well deserved trip for Eldon and Allene to England to meet her family there. They did everything together and now, they are together again for part of the glorious reunion he looked forward to so much.

After throwing for four touchdowns in a conference-championship-clinching victory over Independence, Hutchinson Community College quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/collier_samari_cpv0">Samari Collier</a>&nbsp;was named the NJCAA National Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

One day earlier, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore, was named the Jayhawk Conference's Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Saturday's game at Independence was the second time this season that Collier has thrown for four touchdown passes.

Collier threw for career highs of 236 yards on four touchdowns to pace a Blue Dragon offense that racked up 346 total yards.

Collier connected with Oran Singleton for a 66-yard catch and run for a touchdown to opening the scoring with 5:44 to play in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. One play after a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/jones_nylen_05hn">Nylen Jones</a>&nbsp;interception, Collier hit&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/beason_zerah_m1gv">Zeriah Beason</a>&nbsp;in stride for a 70-yard touchdown strike for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. 🏈 HutchCC's Collier named NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week

Mark A. Reade, 67, Hays, died Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in LaCrosse.

He was born August 16, 1956 in Goodland, the son of Radean C. “Ray” and Phyllis (Amack) Reade. In 1974, he graduated from Buhler High School and he later earned an Associate’s Degree from Hutchinson Junior College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Fort Hays State University. For over 30 years, he was an account executive for Berlin Wheeler. On November 5, 2021, he was united in marriage to Sonya R. (Herrman) Garrett in Hays. Mark enjoyed music, a wide variety of sports, and was an avid Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and University of Kansas fan. He was an outstanding softball player and will be posthumously inducted into the USSSA Softball Hall of Fame in February of 2024. In addition to softball, Mark loved to play golf and scored his first ever hole-in-one at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson. He possessed a deep love for his wife Sonya, his family, and his friends.

Survivors include his wife Sonya, of the home in Hays, his father Ray Reade of Hutchinson, a son Troy Reade and wife Kassie and their son Finley Reade of Gladstone, MO, a daughter Baylee Reade of San Antonio, TX, a brother Ron Reade and wife Karen of Hutchinson, step-daughters, Kendahl Goetzmann and husband Brett of Manhattan, KS and Abby Garrett and fiancé Zane Nelson of Lincoln, NE, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Phyllis Reade on April 12, 2019.

A celebration of Mark’s life will take place at 9:30 am on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in LaCrosse, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Friday and from 8:30 am until service time on Saturday, all at the funeral home. An additional celebration of Mark’s life will take place at 10:30 am on Monday, November 13, 2023 at New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 700 E. 25th Street, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Michael William McConnaughy, 75, of Wichita, died November 6, 2023, at his residence. He was born August 20, 1948, in St. Joseph, MO, to James Clinton and Theda Thedinger McConnaughy.

Michael graduated from Trinity High School (Hutchinson) and attended Hutchinson Community College. He was a long-haul truck driver. Michael enjoyed traveling, hunting, photography, working on cars, antique shopping and was an animal lover. He loved his family, would assist anyone in need, was outgoing and selfless. Michael’s favorite phrase was “Honey, this won’t take long.”

On February 3, 1968, he married Terry Rupp in McPherson. They were blessed with two children during their 44 years of marriage. They later divorced.

Michael is survived by his: son, Daniel (Juanita Norton) McConnaughy of Wichita; daughter, LoriBeth (Jonathan) McConnaughy of Wichita; grandchildren, Tristan McConnaughy of Mexia, TX, Taylor McConnaughy of Hutchinson, Dylan Oliver of Houston, TX; sisters, Patricia Bunker of Sunnyvale, CA, Peggy McConnaughy of Chico, CA, Jo Ann (Bill) Fluderer of Lenexa, KS, and Mary (Brad) VanRiette of Iola; brothers, Don (Lynn) McConnaughy of Hutchinson and John (Lisa) McConnaughy of Memphis, TN; former wife and mother of his children, Terry McConnaughy of Wichita; and partner of seven years, Janice Koontz of Wichita.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dan and Jim McConnaughy.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Elliott Chapel. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday until time of service at Elliott Mortuary. &nbsp;

 </figure>Michael William McConnaughy, 75, of Wichita, died November 6, 2023, at his residence. He was born August 20, 1948, in St. Joseph, MO, to James Clinton and Theda Thedinger McConnaughy.Michael graduated from Trinity High School (Hutchinson) and attended Hutchinson Community College. He was a long-haul truck driver. Michael enjoyed traveling, hunting, photography, working on cars, antique shopping and was an animal lover. He loved his family, would assist anyone in need, was outgoing and selfless. Michael’s favorite phrase was “Honey, this won’t take long.”On February 3, 1968, he married Terry Rupp in McPherson. They were blessed with two children during their 44 years of marriage. They later divorced.Michael is survived by his: son, Daniel (Juanita Norton) McConnaughy of Wichita; daughter, LoriBeth (Jonathan) McConnaughy of Wichita; grandchildren, Tristan McConnaughy of Mexia, TX, Taylor McConnaughy of Hutchinson, Dylan Oliver of Houston, TX; sisters, Patricia Bunker of Sunnyvale, CA, Peggy McConnaughy of Chico, CA, Jo Ann (Bill) Fluderer of Lenexa, KS, and Mary (Brad) VanRiette of Iola; brothers, Don (Lynn) McConnaughy of Hutchinson and John (Lisa) McConnaughy of Memphis, TN; former wife and mother of his children, Terry McConnaughy of Wichita; and partner of seven years, Janice Koontz of Wichita.He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dan and Jim McConnaughy.Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Elliott Chapel. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Fine Arts Department's Holiday Hoopla concert is on Nov. 16 at Stringer Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m. It will feature a symphonic band and instrumental jazz performance.

Music Instructor and Jazz Program Coordinator Greg Weis said a combo group and band will play for the jazz portion of the concert. The combo group is a rhythmic section with a few horn players.&nbsp; A vocalist will join the combo and then the big band will play a jazz set with a few Christmas tunes. One of those tunes is an arrangement of Donnie Hathaway's This Christmas that Weis arranged for the band.&nbsp;

"It's going to be a world premiere of that arrangement and then we are going to play kind of a jazz band of an arrangement of the Nutcracker Suite," Weis said.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for students. Hutch CC students and employees get in free with their ID.&nbsp;

"If you bring in canned food, the tickets end up being half price," Weis said.&nbsp;

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of James Thomas Coons III.

Jim was born March 13, 1964, in Manhattan, Kansas. He will always be lovingly remembered by his surviving family members. &nbsp;Jim was 59 years old, he peacefully passed away on November 2, 2023, at his home in Hutchinson, Kansas surrounded by his loving family. Jim will always be missed and never forgotten; the world lost a great young man.

He was preceded in death by his father Tom Coons, grandparents Jim and Dorothy Coons and Oscar and Mary Krueger, aunt and uncle Bill and Karen Krueger, and aunt and uncle Lyle and Bonnie Neville.&nbsp;

In high school Jim was an exceptional wrestler, he began his wrestling career at 5 years of age. He was a four-year letterman and team captain; graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1983. While in high school his greatest athletic accomplishment was becoming a three-time KSHAA 6A State Wrestling Champion and winning the Grand State Championship in 1982 at 105 lbs. While a sophomore, Jim lead the Salt Hawks to a 6A State Team Title in 1981 and as junior a 6A State Team Runner-Up Title in 1982. &nbsp;Jim is recognized by many as one of the most outstanding high school wrestlers from the state of Kansas in the 1980’s. He was an amazing wrestling talent, his three individual titles were as a sophomore in 1981 at 98 lbs., as a junior in 1982 at 105 lbs., and as a senior in 1983 at 119 lbs. Jim was undefeated as a high school senior while at Hutchinson High School. He was recognized nationally in high school as an “All-American” member in 1983 by placing at Iowa Nationals. After high school Jim earned a full ride wrestling scholarship to the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. As an amateur athlete Jim won many regional and placed in several national wrestling tournaments in both freestyle and folkstyle.&nbsp;

He began his professional career as a high school assistant wrestling coach, working with his uncle Lyle Neville at Hutchinson High School in the late 1980’s through the early 1990’s. After concluding his high school coaching career, Jim kept involved with his passion for the sport of wrestling, in coaching youth and freestyle teams, and officiating youth wrestling matches and tournaments. He thoroughly enjoyed being able to pass his knowledge and love of the sport to future generations. &nbsp;

Jim had many talents and varied interests including artistry and craftsmanship in stained glass, iron and wood working. His favorite pastimes were gardening, cultivating Lillie’s in his beautiful Lily Pond. He loved traveling, snow skiing, hunting for wild mushrooms in southwest Colorado in the fall. He was a fisherman, he often fished for Rainbow Trout on the West Fork of the Dolores River in southwestern Colorado. He was an accomplished landscaper and gardener who loved the beauty of flowers and blooming plants. Jimmy spent much of his spare time enjoying the natural beauty of Arizona, Colorado and Kansas camping and fishing with friends. He loved college and professional sports, he was an avid K-State and KC Chiefs football fan throughout his life, attending many home football games. Jim was also a serious collector of rare coins, vintage baseball cards and Indian artifacts.

Jim was a remarkably friendly, kind, loving and talented man who lived his life to the fullest. He was a friend to all and would literally do anything for someone that needed help, Jimmy was loved by all. He always loved spending time with his family and friends. He was the light of any room he was in and always had an amazing sense of humor. He was the rock to his mother as a son and friend and will be greatly missed by all.&nbsp;

The family will be announcing soon a date for Jim’s Celebration of Life. The location, date and time of Jimmy’s Celebration of Life will be noticed in the Hutchinson News and Facebook in the near future. In charge of arrangements, Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team picked up their third straight win to start the season with a 100-64 win over Allen County on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons finished with five players in double-figure scoring, led by Kernan Bundy and Kamryn Thomas' 16 points each. Dadrevius Weathers totaled 14, while Valentino Simon and Dallas Whitney each had 13.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (3-0) shot 49 percent from the field, knocking down 39-of-79 field goal attempts. The Blue Dragons went to the foul line 27 times, knocking down 16 of them.

Allen County struggled against the Blue Dragon defense, turning the ball over 33 times, leading to 46 Hutchinson points. The Red Devils were led in scoring by Grayson Ryan's 18 points off the bench.

The Blue Dragons scored 50 points from its starters and another 50 from its bench players. 

HutchCC led 53-34 and outscored the Red Devils, 47-30 in the second half.

Hutchinson will travel to Great Bend for the Barton Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Blue Dragons will play Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on Friday at 3 p.m. and Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Friday game will be broadcast live on 102.9-FM KHUT and Saturday on 1450-AM/98.5-FM KWBW.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team improved its record to 3-0 on the season following a 107-63 win over Neosho County on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

The 107 points scored are the most since the Blue Dragons beat Garden City, 103-61 on February 8, 2020.

Hutchinson (3-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Monae Duffy with 24, one away from matching her career-high. Duffy finished nearly perfect from the floor, knocking down 11 of 12 shot attempts.

Kiki Smith added 19 points, the third time in as many games the freshman from Topeka has scored double figures.

Liberal native Bree Horyna finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, marking her second straight double-double.

Journey Armstead (12 points, 6 assists) and Hailey Jackson (11 points, 9 rebounds) both rounded out the Blue Dragon double-figure scorers.

The Blue Dragons trailed by as many as 10 points in the first quarter and found themselves down 26-23 at the quarters end.

Hutchinson dominated the second quarter and led 49-34 at halftime.

The Hutchinson lead continued to grow as the game went on, outscoring the Panthers 58-29 in the second half to cruise to the 44-point victory.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons hit century mark, cruise to third straight win

Donna Jane Stiffler, 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, November 5, 2023 after a courageous fight against cancer, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;She was born January 4, 1958, in Hutchinson, KS to John and Betty Haines.

Donna grew up an “Air Force brat” moving all over the United States and other countries including Spain. &nbsp;She graduated from Ruskin High School in Kansas City, MO. &nbsp;After becoming a mother to two girls, she went back to Hutchinson Community College and graduated with an Early Education degree. &nbsp;She spent many years as a job coach and did respite care for TECH. &nbsp;Her most treasured job was for Boys and Girls Club as their kids after school director for the mentally and physically handicapped. &nbsp;

Donna’s hobbies included always looking for a new recipe to try with the family and crafting; making wreaths and painting ceramics. &nbsp;She could bedazzle anything. &nbsp;She also had an enormous collection of salt and pepper shakers and chickens. &nbsp;Her family called her the crazy chicken lady and she would proudly wear shirts declaring so.

She is survived by her two daughters, Dannielle (Kevin) Stiffler and Janie Stiffler both of Hutchinson, KS; &nbsp;a sister, Laurie Brady of Missoula, MT; a brother, David (Brandie) Haines of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Jayson (Lacie) Kidd, Bryson (Kirstin) Kidd, Alexis (Hailey) Kidd; great grandchildren, Madison, Avery, and one more on the way.

Hutchinson Community College football garnered two more Jayhawk Conference Players of the Week after a KJCCC championship-clinching 42-8 road victory at Independence on Saturday. &nbsp;

Quarterback Samari Collier was named the KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Linebacker K’Von Sherman earned his first career league Defensive Player of the Week award.&nbsp;

Collier is the sixth Offensive Player of the Week winner this season. Sherman is the fifth Defensive award winner. The Dragons have a grand total of 15 KJCCC Players of the Week this season.&nbsp;

SAMARI COLLIER – Offensive Player of the Week&nbsp; Collier threw for four touchdowns and had 256 total yards in Hutchinson’s conference championship-clinching victory. Collier threw for touchdowns of 67, 70, 65 and 3 yards against the Pirates. He was 6 of 15 passing, but had no interceptions. Collier also ran for 36 yards on seven carries to pace the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

K’VON SHERMAN – Defensive Player of the Week&nbsp; Sherman led the Blue Dragons in tackles with seven total stop in Hutchinson’s 42-8 win over Independence. &nbsp;

Sherman had a quarterback sack for an eight-yards loss and 1.5 total tackles for loss, accounting for 11 yards.&nbsp;

Sherman had one of six quarterback sacks by the Blue Dragons, which held Independence to a negative-13 rushing yards.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team looks to go 3-0 in the early going of the 2023-24 season on Tuesday night as the Allen Red Devils come to the Sports Arena.

Tipoff for the non-conference battle is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will also be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 7:15 p.m.

The Blue Dragons inched two victories closer to becoming the first NJCAA men's basketball program with 1,900 all-time victories - Hutchinson is No. 1 in the NJCAA with 1,896 all-time wins - with a pair of wins on opening weekend at the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic.

The Dragons won their 16th consecutive season opener with a 91-82 victory over North Idaho last Friday at the Sports Arena. Six Blue Dragons scored in double figures led by 14 points each from J.P. Ricks and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>. The Dragons hit 12 3-pointers and forced 32 Cardinal turnovers.

Then on Saturday, the Dragon scored 57 points in the second half to pull away from No. 23 NEO for a 102-84 victory.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/simon_valentino_8svq">Valentino Simon</a>&nbsp;scored a team-high 19 points and Dre Weathers added a career-high 17 points to power the Blue Dragons to the victory.

Allen enters play on Tuesday night also 2-0 with a pair of victories over KCAC junior varsity teams.

First-year head coach Patrick Nee saw his Red Devils defeat the Ottawa University JV 86-68 last Tuesday and the Friends University JV 97-68 on Saturday in Iola.

The Red Devils have been balanced offensively through their first two games with six players averaged in double figures. Dante Jackson is averaging a team-high 17.0 points, while Grayson Ryan and Killian Spellman are averaging 16.0 points per game.

Tuesday's matchup will be the 54th all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Allen. The Blue Dragons own a 44-9 all-time series record with Hutchinson winning the last meeting 92-84 in the opening round of the 2020 Region VI Tournaments.

Allen dropped to Division II two seasons ago.

At halftime, the 2023 Jayhawk Conference champion Blue Dragon football team will be honored.

Fresh off two impressive opening-weekend victories, the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team plays its third of six non-conference games on Tuesday night against Neosho County.

Tipoff at the Hutchinson Sports Arena is set for 5:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

Hutchinson (2-0) opened the season with two victories in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic, defeating Eastern Oklahoma State 87-56 and NEO 82-43 this past weekend.

Against NEO, the Blue Dragons had three players post double-doubles -&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/jackson_hailey_x66o">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;(12 points/10 rebounds),&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;(14 points/12 rebounds) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/horyna_bree_rg28">Bree Horyna</a>&nbsp;(11 points/12 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons posted back-to-back games of 60 or more rebounds over the weekend. The 63 rebounds against NEO were the seventh most in Hutchinson single-game history.

Hutchinson averaged 84.5 points per game, shooting 43.8 percent from the floor, but only 26.5 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, the Blue Dragons allowed 49.5 points per game. Opponents shot just 25.6 percent from the field.

Neosho County (1-0) won its season opener on Saturday, defeating the Friends University Junior Varsity 112-57 in Chanute.

Five Panthers scored in double figures led by Myah Coleman's 16 points. Neosho County's defense had an incredible 35 steals in the game.

Hutchinson and Neosho County used to be KJCCC opponents, but the Panthers dropped to Division II two seasons ago.

Tuesday's meeting is the 30th in series history. The Blue Dragons own a 27-2 all-time lead in the series with Neosho County. The Blue Dragons have won the last eight meetings, the last was a 100-58 victory in 2021 at the Sports Arena.

This will be a three-game week for the Blue Dragons. After Tuesday', the Dragons will play Labette and Redlands at the Barton Classic on Friday and Saturday in Great Bend.

This will be the second-straight season that the Blue Dragons and Reivers meet in the regular season as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the national polls. Last season the Blue Dragons rallied late to defeat Iowa Western 29-27 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
