HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Ray and Stella Dillon Lecture Series at Hutchinson Community College will open its 2024 series with Artificial Intelligence (AI) researcher and blogger Janelle Shane on Tuesday, February 20 at 10:30 am at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Shane’s AI humor blog, AIweirdness.com, looks at the strange side of artificial intelligence. She has been featured in the New York Times, The Atlantic, WIRED, Popular Science, All Things Considered, and Slate.

In 2019 she was named one of Fast Company’s 100 most creative people in business. Her TED talk is a funny and insightful look at the nature of machine learning algorithms.

Her book You Look Like a Thing and I Love You: How AI Works and Why It’s Making the World a Weirder Place uses cartoons and humorous pop-culture experiments to look inside the minds of the algorithms that run our world, making artificial intelligence and machine learning accessible and entertaining.

Shane received her BS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University, her MPhil in Physics from the University of St. Andrews, and her PhD from the University of California San Diego.

Tickets to the lecture are available now at www.hutchcc.edu/dls and will also be available beginning at 9:45 am the day of the lecture at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

She will appear at a press conference for members of the media prior to the lecture. The press conference is scheduled at 9:45 a.m. in the Media Interview Room of the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Dillon Lecture next week to feature Artificial Intelligence researcher

Hutchinson Community College freshman guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;was named the Jayhawk Conference Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season on Tuesday.

Smith, a 5-foot-7 freshman from Topeka, had career highs of 33 points and six 3-pointers as part of a huge week for the now No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons.

Smith had her first career 30-point game on a 92-62 win at Pratt last Wednesday. She hit 12 of 17 total shots and 6 of 11 from 3-point range against the Beavers. Smith added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Smith followed that with 20 points and four steals against Cloud County in a 93-63 win.

For the week, the Jayhawk Conference's third-leading scorer averaged 25.0 points, 4.5 rebounds 3.0 steaks and 2.0 assists. She shot 63.6 percent and hit 8 of 18 from 3-point range. Smith surpassed the 400-point mark of the season.

The Blue Dragon guard was also named KJCCC Player of the Week on November 14 and on December 12.

Smith is the fourth-leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference at 17.7 points per game.

(Ilda) Jane Graves Fries, the daughter of Brooks Wallace and Florence Emma (Tuxhorn) Graves, was born September 13, 1921 on her parents’ farm near Inman, Kansas.

The family moved into Inman when she started school, graduating from grade school and high school in Inman. She graduated from Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas and worked at the First National Bank in Hutchinson until marrying Harold Edward Fries May 25, 1942, after he joined the Army Aircorp and graduated from the Officers Candidate School in St Louis, Missouri. They lived at three different Air Bases. After four months, she returned to work at the Bank while he served 2 ½ years in US Army Air Force in the Mediterranean area returning home in January of 1945. He was stationed at an Air Base in Columbia, South Carolina and then sent to Long Island, New York until the war ended.

Returning home, they settled in McPherson raising four children, Howard, Mary Margaret, Edward and Dale. Her family was very special to her and she loved to sew, cook and bake. She also loved to travel and go camping with the family. She enjoyed visiting National Parks, Canada and Alaska. During her travels, she visited all 50 states.She retired after ten years as bookkeeper at Raleighs Drug Store and sixteen years taking care of the payroll for Certainteed Corp in McPherson. After retiring, she and Harold would spend winters in Arizona visiting their sons Dale (Lucrecia) and Dr. Edward (Pat) and two children, Sarah and Alan in California on their way home.She was a past President of Soroptimist International of McPherson. She was also past President of Church Women United of McPherson when they were both active organizations. She served her Church many years as Treasurer, choir member, Flower chairman, Council member and as Women’s Fellowship Chairman. She enjoyed her many friends in Mid Century EHU, The Amity Club, Bible Study groups and the Birthday Breakfast group. She also enjoyed volunteering at Save and Share for over twenty years as their Cashier.Jane was preceded in death by &nbsp;her parents; her beloved husband, Harold, of 59 years of marriage, sister Helen Books Ayres, two brothers Leo Graves and Robert Graves.She is survived by her son, Howard, daughter Mary Margaret Mingenback of Emporia, son Edward (Pat) of Torrance, California and son Dale (Lucrecia) of McPherson, three grandchildren Sarah Morgan, Alan Fries and Patti (Wasim Zaman) Mingenback and four great grandchildren, Ravi, Kenneth, Savanah and Cassandra, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.Memorial service will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Chapel, McPherson, KS..Private family inurnment at North Inman Cemetery, Inman, KS..In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Inman Museum and they can be sent to Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Funeral Home; 222 W. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Current Hutchinson Community College Assistant Athletic Director Steve Kappenman will join Hutchinson Public Schools as Athletic Director in the 2024-2025 school year. Kappenman joins the Salthawks after 12 successful years with HutchCC, where he is better known as “Kapp.”

While at HutchCC, Kapp has specialized in eligibility, compliance, scheduling, concessions, game operations, and fundraising for the Blue Dragon Athletic Department. Kapp joined HutchCC in 2012. During his time at HutchCC, the Blue Dragons went on to win four NJCAA Championships.

A graduate of Hutchinson High School and HutchCC, Kapp went on to the University of Kansas, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management with a business minor. He holds a Master’s degree in Health, Human Performance, and Recreation from Pittsburg State University.

Kappenman joins his wife, Morgan Kappenman, third grade teacher at Wiley Elementary and his three sons; Lucas, Landry, and Lawson, who also attend the district. “I am excited to be a part of making a positive impact in the culture at USD 308. I look forward to building strong relationships with students, coaches, teachers, and parents in this community. Once a Salthawk, Always a Salthawk.”

Jon McLean, outgoing Athletic Director, will join Hutchinson Middle School as teacher and girls’ basketball coach.

Hutchinson is currently 20-3 overall, 15-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.

The Blue Dragons have won its last six games and will travel to No. 9 Cowley College on Wednesday in Ark City.

HutchCC is one of four Jayhawk Conference schools in the Top 25. Barton is No. 2, Cowley No. 9, Hutchinson No. 15 and Butler is No. 22.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 15 Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team secured its sixth straight win, defeating Cloud County 75-56 on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson (20-3, 15-2 KJCCC) built a 20-point lead at halftime, 44-24. The Blue Dragons suffocating defense made it hard for Cloud County (16-8, 11-7) to do anything with the basketball.

Cloud County shot 27 percent from the floor (16-of-58), including 23 percent (5-of-21) from behind the arc.

The Blue Dragons on the other hand shot 49 percent (24-of-49), knocking down 41 percent (7-of-17) from the three-point line. Hutchinson also got it done at the foul line, knocking down 20-of-23 (87 percent) free throw attempts.

Four Hutchinson players scored in double figures, led by Dallas Whitney with 19 points off the bench. Kam Thomas scored 15 points, while Tino Simon secured his third straight double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.&nbsp;

Ja'Ron Briggs led the T-Birds with 15 points, nine of which came from the free throw line. Cheik Sow finished with a double-double, 12 points and 14 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons will travel to Arkansas City to play No. 10 Cowley on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 2 Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team saw five players score in double figures in a 93-63 rout of Cloud County on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Kiki Smith poured in 20 points to lead all scorers, her sixth 20-point game this season. Journey Armstead and Akaysha Muggeridge each scored by 15, while Hailey Jackson and Kahlen Norris finished with 12.

Hutchinson (23-0, 17-0 KJCCC) continued its unbeaten season, moving into a tie for the fourth-best start in program history. The 23-game winning streak is the fifth longest in the programs 50-year history.

The Blue Dragons scored 20 or more points in all four quarters of the game, 24 in each of the first two quarters, followed by 25 and 20 in quarters three and four.&nbsp;

HutchCC held Cloud County (12-11, 8-10) its fourth straight loss and finished off the season sweep of the T-Birds.

The T-Birds were led by Josephine Igherighe with 19 points, while Maimouna Sissoko finished with a double-double, 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Hutchinson shot 52.9 percent from the floor (37-of-70), including knocking down 12 3-pointers, the second most in a single-game this season.

The Blue Dragons saw all 11 players who saw action, score. Hutchinson finished with nine turnovers in the game, its second straight game with under-10.

Hutchinson will travel to Cowley College (12-12, 6-12) on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip off from Arkansas City. The Tigers knocked off No. 11 Dodge City on Saturday, 78-65.

Lorelee (Daily) Hayden, age 70 of Hutchinson, KS peacefully passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024, surrounded by loving family. Lorelee was born on March 7, 1953, in Hays, KS. She was the third of five girls, Debby, Peggy, Lorelee, Karla and Marla, born to Harold and Maynetta Daily and was raised on a farm southeast of Ellis, KS.

At a very young age, it became clear that Lorelee was Maynetta and Grandma Younger's " little helper". While some of the other sisters wanted to be outside helping Harold, riding horses, or just plain getting dirty, Lorelee always volunteered instead to stay in the house to help clean, cook meals, learn to sew clothes with Mom or just be of any help. All the girls attended Catholic School, and because Grandma talked about the wonderful love of God and was a perfect example of prayer and devotion, Marla and Debby remembered feeling that they, including Lorelee, wanted to become nuns. Grandma’s influence is still felt in our lives.

Karla recalls how she would get in wrestling matches with Lorelee and always get beat because Lorelee had such long, leans legs and would get those legs wrapped around Karla so tight that she couldn’t wiggle free. Peggy said Lorelee was her best friend in high school and they hung out together every chance they could; but, if they ever got in trouble with mom and dad it was usually Peggy’s idea and Lorelee just went along with big sister.

Lorelee graduated from Ellis High School in 1971, where she fondly remembers lifelong friends she made, the school plays she was in, honors she received in track and other activities, and she especially loved being a cheerleader and cheering on her classmates.

Lorelee went on to attend Hutchinson Jr. College and it was there that she met William “Bill” Hayden. On their first date he pulled up in a bright red corvette. She told family members it was love at first sight...for the car...and Bill. Bill and Lorelee were married and made their home in Hutchinson, KS. Two much loved boys were born to this union. Michael Hayden was born on November 14, 1977, followed by Jeff Hayden born on May 14,1980. Lorelee had been working in the Administration Office at Krogers but when the boys were born, Lorelee devoted all her time to caring for her boys until they reached school age. Once they were settled in school, Lorelee returned to work at Krogers and retired there after 20+ years.

Because of her love for family, Lorelee and Bill would often get together with her parents and sisters to make sure that the boys would grow up knowing and spending time with cousins Becky, Rocky, Grady and Scott and other family members. Sometimes the noise and chaos was overwhelming for the adults, but the kids sure had a good time.

Lorelee will be deeply missed by her adoring family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by sons Michael Hayden and grandchildren Abbott, Miles, and Fear; and Jeffrey Hayden; sisters Debby (Rick) Holman and children Becky and Rocky; Aidyn Holman; Peggy Daily; Karla (Mike) Whitmore and children Alexandra, Shane and Shadd; Marla (Kevin) Homburg and daughter Abbey (Charlie) Steiben and their son Griffen; Aunt Judy (Tom) Smith and sons Grady and Scott. She is preceded in death by husband William “Bill” Hayden, Bill's parents, Martin and Leona Hayden and Maynetta and Harold Daily.

Parish rosary will be 10 am Thursday, February 15, 2024, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to, an educational fund for Lorelee’s grandchildren or Trinity Catholic High School, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

The Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon men's basketball team will play host to the Cloud County Thunderbirds for HutchCC's annual Pink-Out game on Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The No. 15-ranked Blue Dragons (19-3, 14-2 Jayhawk Conference) and Thunderbirds (16-7, 11-6 Jayhawk Conference) will tip off at 4 p.m. with the Pink-Out ceremony at halftime.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 3:45 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live and free on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 3:45 p.m.

The Blue Dragons go in search of their 56th 20-win season in program history. Blue Dragon men's basketball started in 1928-29, but didn't have its first 20-win season until the 1956-57 season. The first time Blue Dragon basketball played 20 games in a season was 1948-49. Only 12 times since that initial 20-win season (67 seasons) have the Dragons failed to reach 20 wins in a season.

The Dragons landed on the doorstep of a 20-win season with an impressive 109-78 victory over Pratt on Wednesday at Pratt. That 31-point win over the Beavers was the first 30-point margin of victory over the Beavers since 1999.

The Thunderbirds showed that defense in a 60-49 victory over Dodge City on Wednesday in Concordia. Cloud County limited the Conquistadors to 29.8 percent overall shooting with only 17 total field goals and forced 22 turnovers.

Offensively, Cheikh Sow led Cloud County with 18 points as the Thunderbirds shot 46.1 percent from the field with five turnovers.

The Blue Dragons won the first meeting with Cloud County this season, 82-73 on December 6 in Concordia. Simon and Thomas both reached the 20-point mark with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Simon had a double-double with 13 rebounds.

Saturday's matchup will be the 79th in series history between the Blue Dragons and Thunderbirds. The Dragons own a 57-21 all-time lead. Since Cloud County joined the KJCCC in 1996-97, the Dragons lead the series 38-17.

Cloud County enters the game on a three-game losing streak, dropping a 91-72 decision to No. 11 Dodge City on Wednesday in Concordia. Dodge City blitzed the Thunderbirds with 15 3-pointers. Josephine Igherighe had 23 points and Bailey Burns had 20 points to lead Cloud County on Wednesday.

Hutchinson rolled to a 23-9 lead after one quarter on the way to a 77-50 over Cloud County in the first meeting of the season on December 6 in Concordia.

As always when Hutchinson and Cloud County get together, the Jayhawk Conference's top-two winningest coaches meet. Hutchinson head coach John Ontjes is second in KJCCC women's basketball history with 468 coaching wins. Cloud County's Brett Erkenbrack is the all-time league leader with 668 KJCCC wins and 736 Region VI wins.

Cori Lynn Bennett, 57, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, surrounded by her family at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Cori was born on September 17, 1966, in Seward, NE.&nbsp; She graduated from high school in Seward, NE and continued her education at Central Community College in Hastings, NE where she received her certificate in Early Childhood Development.&nbsp; On March 26, 2002, Cori was united in marriage to Tony L. Bennett and took on the active role of a military wife.

She was the Food Director at McPherson Hospital and formerly was General Manager for Applebee’s and Chipotle.&nbsp; Her most recent and favorite “job” was babysitting her grandchildren, giving them lots of love and care.

Cori was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend, but most importantly, a devoted grandmother.&nbsp; She spent her days with grandkids doing arts and crafts, spoiling them, and making sure they were always happy.&nbsp; She spent her summers getting the pool in the backyard ready for endless swimming, preparing family barbecues, and traveling to every one of her grandkids’ sporting events.&nbsp; Cori made every child feel like one of her grandchildren.&nbsp; It did not matter if you were family.&nbsp; If you were in her house, you were one of her own.

The fall and winter months were spent gathering her children and grandchildren at her house for football games.&nbsp; Saturdays were for the Nebraska Huskers, GO BIG RED, and she never missed a game cheering for the Chicago Bears and of course, the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp;

Cori touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with, and took pride in knowing her house felt like a home.&nbsp; She was loved by so many and will never be forgotten.

Survivors include: her loving husband, Tony Bennett of the home; seven children, Chris Dirks (Paige Miller) of Inman, KS, Jessica Dirks of McPherson, KS, James Nelson (Abbi) of McPherson, KS, Amanda Bennett of Salem, OR, Kaytlyn Johnson (Aaron Hart) of McPherson, KS, Brandon Johnson of McPherson, KS, and Megan Bennett of Salem, OR; her mother, Barbara J. (Schleufer) Stutzman of Superior, NE; five siblings, Tim Stutzman of York, NE, Stacy Jambe (Patrick) of Sanford, FL, Laura Stutzman of Great Bend, KS, Justin Hartman (Cory) of Seward, NE, and Vicky Wagner (Jeromi) of Mankato, KS; nine grandchildren, Carson, Aria, Owen, Ben, Carter, Archer, Addelyn, Aly, and baby Alora (due in May); several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Elbert Stutzman, and biological mother, Ruth A. (Hicks) Haines.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, February 16, 2024, at Countryside Covenant Church.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Community Foundation welcomes Anna Brown, Oscar Garcia and Peggy Ruebke to its board of directors. They replace outgoing directors Lisa French, Dawn Johnson and David Neal, whose terms expired.

Brown is the Risk and Performance Improvement Manager at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She has previously worked at Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County and the Reno County Health Department.

In addition to her roles in health care, Brown is serving a fourth term as president of the Langdon City Council and is a past member of the HEAL Reno County Advisory Council and Food Policy Council.

She is a Certified Health Education Specialist, a graduate of the Kansas Public Health Leadership Series, and holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational development and master’s degrees in health education and promotion and business administration.

She and her husband have three children and live in Langdon.

Garcia is a Vice President of lending at RCB Bank in Hutchinson.

He has served various community organizations and committees, including Rise Up Reno, Reno County American Red Cross, the Hutchinson Land Bank and the Reno County ARPA Task Force.

Garcia is an alumnus of Leadership Reno County and Hutchinson Community College.

He and his wife live in Hutchinson and have two children.

Ruebke is the mayor of Nickerson and a volunteer firefighter for Reno County District 3.

She serves on the Nickerson Planning and Zoning Board; Nickerson Recreation Board; and the Nickerson Chamber of Commerce, where she is a past president. She was also a member of the Sunflower Neighborhood Association in Wichita, and for many years, she has served as an assistant scoutmaster and leader of Cub Scout Troop 333.

Ruebke graduated from Hutchinson Community College and has completed multiple Kansas Leadership Center programs.

She and her husband have five children and two grandchildren and live in Nickerson.

Reno County residents join foundation board

Jackie Lee Canning, 80, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS. He was born October 5, 1943, in Kansas City, MO to Francis Owen and Alma Mae (Dobbins) Canning and was lovingly adopted from the heart into the George and Dorothy Koon family.

Jack received his Associate’s Degree from Hutchinson Community College and went on to McPherson College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Arts. On July 22, 1967, Jack married Sharon McLaughlin in Hutchinson, KS. He was an avid Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan. In his spare time, you would find him enjoying a good baseball or football game. Jack was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. Jack and Sharon were longtime residents of the Yankee Run Kanopolis family.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Alma and adopted parents, George and Dorothy; and brother-in-law, Bill May.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; sons, Eric Canning and Anthony Canning both of Hutchinson, KS; granddaughter, Bailey Canning, of Wichita, KS; brother, Jim (Teri) Koon of Nickerson, KS; sisters, Carol May and Kathy (Gary) Phleger, both of Hutchinson, KS; nephews, Jeff (Charity) May, Mike (Gina) May both of Elizabethtown, KY, and Eddie (Betsy) Koon, of Nickerson, KS; niece, Tina (Jon Rankin) Koon of Hutchinson, KS; great nephews, Wade Koon, Garrett Koon both of Nickerson, KS, Tyler May, Cody May, Austin May, Christian May all from Elizabethtown, KY, and Jackson Koon of Hutchinson, KS; and brother-in-law, Terry McLaughlin of Hutchinson, KS.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2024 Reno County Economic Outlook Conference examines the economy of the state as a whole but Debra Teufel, President and CEO of Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce covered much of the recent impact the economy had and could potentially have locally. Teufel closed out the conference as the last speaker on Feb. 6 at the Crystal Ballroom at the Burt.&nbsp;

Teufel highlighted Hutchinson Community College's impact to help students secure jobs in the workforce in Reno County. According to Teufel's presentation, the unemployment rate in Reno falls slightly above 3.0%. She also referenced a report from a few years ago that says 16,698 people live and work in Reno County.&nbsp;

"We are doing a better job than any other community I know in matching people to jobs and making sure that they are trained," Teufel said. "We have the best career technical education academy right here. We are recognizing those students through signing day that are signing up for technical careers and then we are making sure we are getting them into apprenticeships."

Teufel's presentation included statistics from surveys regarding the employee skill needed locally and the primary issues impacting employee attraction and retention to locally.&nbsp;

"This is the very reason that we embark on things like the Career Quest program, and a working partnership with the Boys and Girls Club on ethic skills because 48% of you and another 33% said soft skills and basic skills are what you need for those employees to come in the door and train on aptitude," Teufel said. "But you need them to have a good attitude when they walk in the door so we are going to continue to do that and do those programs and make sure that we are vetting those soft skills in these young people."&nbsp;

Teufel said that the lack of reliable child care and housing availability and affordability are the top two issues that are turning people away from jobs in the county.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"When we get into what is happening in our population and our population is declining, a big part of that is the result of a couple of factors on this screen," Teufel said at the conference. "Thirty one percent said access to reliable child care then another 20% when you combine housing availability and housing affordability,&nbsp; 20% said that those two issues are holding you back from attracting employees."&nbsp;

Hutch Chamber CEO reports on local economic impact 

Rose Marie Freelen Stanfield, 60 years old, died February 2, 2024 from ALS at her home in Hutchinson surrounded by loved ones. &nbsp;

She was born July 24, 1963 in Paris, TX, daughter of Shirley (McClain) and Johnny Meredith. Rose attended West Lamar School in Paris, TX. Teachers and childhood friends quickly loved her feisty tenacity and charming wit. It was these features and more that caught the eye of a rough handed oil field hand.

On June 15th, 1982 in Paris, Texas, Rose married Jack Stanfield, Sr. He survives. In their early years of their marriage, they traveled around the United States working the oil fields making many friends and countless memories. Casper Mountain in Wyoming was always her favorite place because of the most romantic and perfect 10 days spent here with Jack. This romance continued to grow and soon Jack Dean, Jr. was born in 1984. Three years later they welcomed their final son, John Wesley.&nbsp;

After putting down roots in Hutchinson in 1989, Rose attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1994. She led a long career in many nursing settings including hospital, long-term care and pediatric home health. Other than her pride for family, Roses’ passion for her patients was unparalleled. Wesley Towers nursing home in Hutchinson, KS was her most tenured and enjoyed nursing job. Rose was known for her thorough, compassionate and exceptional care.&nbsp;

Whether you knew her as family, a patient or the person in front of her at the grocery store, Rose was open and loving with everyone. Her humor and bigger-than-Texas personality made her memorable from the first encounter. You always knew where you stood with Rose and loved her for it. Her nonjudgmental, upfront, warm, hilarious, southernly drawled nature continues to live on in her children and grandchildren.&nbsp;

Rose enjoyed spending time with her family, riding horses and mules, four-wheeling, and watching soap operas. She wouldn’t say no to some Popeye’s chicken or Furr’s when given the opportunity either.&nbsp;

Rose is survived by her husband of almost 42 years, Jack Stanfield Sr. of Hutchinson; sons, Dr. Jack “JD” Stanfield, DC and wife Carla of Hutchinson; John Rathman, RN and husband Dr. Brandyn Rathman, APRN, of Wichita; father, Johnny Meredith of Paris, TX; &nbsp;brothers, Joey Freelen, Jesse Freelen, Johnny Meredith and wife Lori, Wesley Meredith and wife Melanie all of Paris, Texas; sisters, Cynthia Meredith, Barbara Meredith, both of Paris, TX, Crystal (Meredith) and husband Bossie Fuller of Denton, TX; and her grandchildren, Jossalynne Rose “JoJo” and Jackson Carl Stanfield of Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her mother, sister Joni Freelen, and her grandparents Florence and Doyle Tucker (Mammy and Papaw).

A Celebration of Life will be held in Roses honor on Saturday, February 24th, 2024 at The Red Shed (6311 N. K61 Hwy, Hutchinson, KS 67501) from 5 PM - 10 PM. &nbsp;At 5:15 p.m., the Nurses Honor Guard of Wichita will present a brief presentation honoring Roses’ life as a dedicated nurse. Food and beverages will be provided.

 </figure>Rose Marie Freelen Stanfield, 60 years old, died February 2, 2024 from ALS at her home in Hutchinson surrounded by loved ones. &nbsp;She was born July 24, 1963 in Paris, TX, daughter of Shirley (McClain) and Johnny Meredith. Rose attended West Lamar School in Paris, TX. Teachers and childhood friends quickly loved her feisty tenacity and charming wit. It was these features and more that caught the eye of a rough handed oil field hand.On June 15th, 1982 in Paris, Texas, Rose married Jack Stanfield, Sr. He survives. In their early years of their marriage, they traveled around the United States working the oil fields making many friends and countless memories. Casper Mountain in Wyoming was always her favorite place because of the most romantic and perfect 10 days spent here with Jack. This romance continued to grow and soon Jack Dean, Jr. was born in 1984. Three years later they welcomed their final son, John Wesley.&nbsp;After putting down roots in Hutchinson in 1989, Rose attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1994. She led a long career in many nursing settings including hospital, long-term care and pediatric home health. Other than her pride for family, Roses’ passion for her patients was unparalleled. Wesley Towers nursing home in Hutchinson, KS was her most tenured and enjoyed nursing job. Rose was known for her thorough, compassionate and exceptional care.&nbsp;Whether you knew her as family, a patient or the person in front of her at the grocery store, Rose was open and loving with everyone. Her humor and bigger-than-Texas personality made her memorable from the first encounter. You always knew where you stood with Rose and loved her for it. Her nonjudgmental, upfront, warm, hilarious, southernly drawled nature continues to live on in her children and grandchildren.&nbsp;Rose enjoyed spending time with her family, riding horses and mules, four-wheeling, and watching soap operas. She wouldn’t say no to some Popeye’s chicken or Furr’s when given the opportunity either.&nbsp;Rose is survived by her husband of almost 42 years, Jack Stanfield Sr. of Hutchinson; sons, Dr. Jack “JD” Stanfield, DC and wife Carla of Hutchinson; John Rathman, RN and husband Dr. Brandyn Rathman, APRN, of Wichita; father, Johnny Meredith of Paris, TX; &nbsp;brothers, Joey Freelen, Jesse Freelen, Johnny Meredith and wife Lori, Wesley Meredith and wife Melanie all of Paris, Texas; sisters, Cynthia Meredith, Barbara Meredith, both of Paris, TX, Crystal (Meredith) and husband Bossie Fuller of Denton, TX; and her grandchildren, Jossalynne Rose “JoJo” and Jackson Carl Stanfield of Hutchinson.She was preceded in death by her mother, sister Joni Freelen, and her grandparents Florence and Doyle Tucker (Mammy and Papaw).A Celebration of Life will be held in Roses honor on Saturday, February 24th, 2024 at The Red Shed (6311 N. K61 Hwy, Hutchinson, KS 67501) from 5 PM - 10 PM. &nbsp;At 5:15 p.m., the Nurses Honor Guard of Wichita will present a brief presentation honoring Roses’ life as a dedicated nurse. The No. 15-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team looks to stay right in the thick of the Jayhawk Conference championship chase with a Wednesday road game against the Pratt Beavers.

The Blue Dragons (18-3, 13-2 Jayhawk Conference) and the Beavers (6-15, 4-12) tip off at 7:30 p.m. at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena in Pratt.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Darin Dunn (color) calling the action. Hutchinson is in third place in the Jayhawk Conference just 1.5 games behind first-place Barton and one-half game between second-place Cowley entering play on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons enter Wednesday's game on a four-game winning streak after defeating the Independence Pirates 111-82 on Saturday at the Sports Arena. The Beavers have lost three games on a row after losing 87-84 against Dodge City on Saturday. Zion Cruz led Pratt with 19 points while Davonte Ross had 17 points and T.J. Nunnery had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Hutchinson won a high-scoring battle in the first meeting with Pratt this season, winning 103-87 on December 2 at the Sports Arena. Six Blue Dragons scored in double figures led by Bundy with 19 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/simon_valentino_8svq">Valentino Simon</a>&nbsp;had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kayvontay Williams had 28 points to lead Pratt.

The Blue Dragons forced 30 Pratt turnovers. The Blue Dragons exploded in the first half and built a 63-38 lead.

Since the 2019-20 season, both the Blue Dragons and the Beavers have put up huge offensive numbers against the other.

Over the last nine games in the series, Hutchinson and Pratt have scored a combined 196.2 points. That average is 220.6 combined points over the last five games. Last season, the Blue Dragons defeated Pratt 120-118 in Pratt, but the Beavers won 130-126 in overtime in the Sports Arena.

Pratt dropped a 105-89 KJCCC game on Saturday to No. 12 Dodge City despite the 49-point performance by sophomore Princess Anderson.

Anderson is the nation's leading scorer at 26.2 points per game. So far this season, Anderson has posted eight games of 30 or more points and three of 40 or more points this season. Anderson is shooting 45.3 percent from the field, 36.2 percent from 3-point range and 77.3 percent from the free-throw line.

The Blue Dragons defeated Pratt 98-47 in the first meet this season on December 2 at the Sports Arena. Anderson scored 18 points in that first meeting, but on 6 of 23 shooting and 1 of 6 from 3-point range. Hayley Jackson led four Blue Dragons scoring in double figures with 17 points in that first meeting.

Hutchinson held Pratt to 20.0 percent overall shooting on December 2.

The Blue Dragons look to extend an 18-game winning streak against Pratt. Overall, the Blue Dragons lead the all-time series with the Beavers 87-11. The last win for Pratt came in 2015. The 87 wins over Pratt are the most against any Blue Dragon opponent in program history.

The Blue Dragons defeated the Central Christian College JV 21-10 as 10 different Blue Dragons had at least one hit and nine different Hutchinson players had at least one RBI.

Hutchinson improved to 3-0 and will play Southeast Community College in the final two games of a four-game series on Thursday. Site of the games will be determined on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons put together a six-run first inning and a 13-run third inning to grab complete control of the game.

Ten batters came to the plate in the first inning. Mayer now has two home runs and eight RBIs in the first three games of the season.The Blue Dragons reached 20 runs for the first time since scoring 24 runs against the Sterling College JV on April 24, 2023.The Blue Dragons were hit by eight pitches, which is the second most in single-game history. Vassart tied a single-game record getting hit by pitches in three different plate appearances.Five Blue Dragon pitchers struck out a season high 13 batters on Tuesday.<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/combs_sean_gpip">Sean Combs</a>&nbsp;pitched 2 1-3 innings to earn his first win. Combs worked out of a jam in the second inning with a strikeout and line-drive double play. He struck out three and allowed one run and one hit.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/perkins_ashton_8hhl">Ashton Perkins</a>&nbsp;closed the game out with two perfect innings, which included five-straight strikeouts.
