Hutchinson Community College freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/roni_mildred_mud8">Mildred Rono</a>'s impressive collegiate debut earned the Blue Dragon runner KJCCC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors on Tuesday.

Rono, a freshman from Iten, Kenya, obliterated the Terry Masterson Twilight Classing record book in becoming the second-straight Blue Dragon to win the event, which was contested on Friday night at Fun Valley.

Rono smashed the Fun Valley course record with a three-mile time of 16:55.33, blitzing the old record by 39.12 seconds. She is the first runner in event history to break 17 minutes.

Rono's winning margin of 55.30 seconds is also a meet record.

Rono helped the No. 15-ranked Blue Dragon women' to a runner-up finish at the Masterson Twilight.

Mike Dole, 81, died August 28, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born in the family home in Burrton, on August 1, 1944, to John Clifton and Ruth Marjorie (Stanley) Dole.

Mike was a 1962 Burrton High School and 1964 Hutchinson Community College graduate. He worked as a machinist at Cessna and Arrow Machine before owning and operating Michael Machine, Burrton, for several years. Following his work as a machinist, he attended and graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Psychology degree in 1998. He was a corrections counselor for the Department of Corrections at Hutchinson Correctional Facility for many years.

Mike was a proud family man whose greatest joy was following the lives and activities of his children and grandchildren. He especially loved cheering on his grandkids in their sporting events, never missing a chance to be their biggest fan. A fiercely loyal friend, Mike was known for his sharp, inventive mind and his wicked sense of humor. His quick wit and mischievous streak meant he always seemed to be “up to something,” bringing laughter and light to everyone around him.

A lifelong sports fan, Mike enjoyed watching the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, KU basketball, and the NCAA basketball tournament. He had a deep love of baseball, playing as a young boy through his early 30s, and he later developed a passion for running, completing between 30 to 40 marathons. Mike also loved music and enjoyed listening to jazz, blues, and classic rock.

On June 3, 1972, Mike married Patricia Louise “Patty” Brandenberger, in Wichita. Their wedding was officiated by his brother, Stanley.

He is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Patty Dole of Burrton; daughters, Stacey (Troy) Moeder of Hutchinson, Holly (Kevin) Lampe of St. Francis; grandchildren, Logan Lampe of Brewster, Luke Lampe of McDonald, Lyden Lampe of Colby; and sister, Margery Howell of Hutchinson.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lavonne Jeffrey, Clifton Dole, Richard Dole, Ruth Ann Banks, Stanley Dole, and James Dole.

Celebration of Life service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Elliott Mortuary. Family will greet friends an hour prior to the service. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, at Elliott Mortuary. Cremation has taken place.

Hutchinson has added a game to make up for the loss of the Newman University JV game from its original schedule. The Blue Dragons will play host to Wichita United U18 at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

Puccinelli scored a pair of first-half goals for her first and second career goals. Puccinelli just missed a hat trick when she hit the right post with a shot attempt with 21 minutes to play in the second half.

With the Jets packing the defense in its own end, the Dragons finally found their way through the heavy traffic in the 24th minute. McAninch played a soft, high pass into the box that Puccinelli sprinted to get and headed home from 10 yards out for her first career goal, giving the Blue Dragon a 1-0 lead with 21:22 to play in the half.

Puccinelli made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when she smashed in a shot from the right side of the penalty box, taking a perfect pass from Van Fleet.

The Blue Dragons scored a goal off a corner kick for the third-straight game when McAninch delivered the corner about 8 yards in front of the goal and Tamaki headed the ball for a goal and a 3-0 lead with 35:13 to play in the game.

Hutchinson's fourth goal came from Carvalho, who took a pass from Smith that got past two Jet defenders right to the foot of Carvalho for a 4-0 lead with 7:25 to play in the second half.

The American Red Cross is partnering with Hutchinson Community College to host a community blood drive on Thursday, Sept. 4. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Blue Dragon Room inside the Parker Student Union.

Blood drive to be held at HutchCC 

McCOOK, Nebraska – For just the eighth time in program history in the rally score era, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team completed a reverse sweep after falling down two sets to none.

Outside hitters&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/villanueva_alondra_w1k3">Alondra Villanueva</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/proctor_atlyn_jzx3">Atlyn Proctor</a>&nbsp;combined for 27 kills and the Blue Dragons hit .231 over the final three sets to upend the North Platte Knights 21-25, 15-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-12 in the final match of the McCook Labor Day Tournament on Saturday at the Graff Events Center.

The Blue Dragons finished 3-1 at McCook and are above .500 for the first time this season at 4-3. The Blue Dragons will play host to the Barton Cougars in the 2025 Jayhawk Conference and Hutchinson home opener at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons completed their first reverse sweep since September 30, 2023 when they rallied to defeat Dodge City 3-2. Hutchinson is now 61-61 all-time in five-set matches in the rally score era that dates back to 2001.

Villanueva led the Blue Dragons with her second double-double of the season with 15 kills, 11 digs and had three aces. Villanueva hit .209 for the match with six errors on 43 attacks.

Proctor hit .217 with 12 kills on 46 swings. Proctor also had a season-high four blocks. She had three kills in the fifth set.

Follmer hit a season-high .357 and added three total blocks, including one solo block.

The Blue Dragons hit .172 for the match with 44 kills on 139 total attacks. North Platte had 41 total kills.

Sophomore setter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/reupena_angela_5uex">Angela Reupena</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to start the third set to ignite the comeback. She finished with 28 assists, two blocks and two aces.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/garcia_alexandra_ev7s">Alexandra Garcia</a>&nbsp;had 13 assists and six digs.

Libero&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/oliveira_clara_34tl">Clara Oliveira</a>&nbsp;had a season-high 24 digs.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/vazquez_lauren_ysnb">Lauren Vazquez</a>&nbsp;had a season-high 12 digs.

The Blue Dragons had a season-high 10 team blocks. Follmer had three blocks.

SET 1: The Dragons got off to another slow start, not getting their first kill until the 10th rally of the match. North Platte had early leads of 6-3 and 10-6. A Follmer kill capped a 5-1 run to tie the set at 11. But North Platte surged to a 19-13 lead. The Dragons hit .161 in the first set and North Platte claimed the opening set 25-21.

SET 2: Hutchinson hit a negative .077 in the second half as the Knights built leads of 8-3, 12-5 and 14-8. Hutchinson had just four kills in the set to North Platte's nine kills. The Dragons got back within 20-15, but North Platte scored on the final five rallies to take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-15 win.

SET 3: The Blue Dragons scored the first four points of the third set and opened a 10-3 lead after a Knights' attack error. The Knights tied the game at 14-14 after erasing a four-points Dragon lead. Hutchinson took timeout. Out of that timeout, Follmer had a kill, Reupena had back-to-back aces, Villanueva had a back-row kill and Follmer added a kill on an overpass for a 19-14 lead. The Dragons hit .263 in the set and closed out the set with a Villanueva kill and a Knights' ball-handling error for a 25-22 Dragon win.

SET 4: There were five lead changes and four ties in the first 12 rallies of the fourth set. Tied at 6-all,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/galliher_mattie_fggb">Mattie Galliher</a>&nbsp;and Raschen had a double block to give the Blue Dragons the lead for good in the set. A Proctor/Reupena double block gave the Dragons an 11-7 lead. The Knights pulled within 12-11, but a Follmer kill on the slide stopped that North Platte run. Leading 16-14, Follmer connected again and Villanueva had a kill to help the Dragons build a 20-15 lead. Proctor's only three kills of the set came on the final three rallies of the set as Hutchinson forced a fifth set with a 25-17 win.

SET 5: Hutchinson scored the first three points and North Platte scored the next three to force an early Dragon timeout. The Blue Dragons trailed 8-7 at the fifth-set crossover. Trailing 9-8, the Dragons had a key 3-0 run on a Raschen kill, a Follmer/Proctor double block and a North Platte attack error for an 11-9 lead. A Proctor kill got the Dragons to match point at 14-10. North Platte fought off two match points, but Proctor completed the reverse sweep with a cross-court kill for a 15-12 set win.

🏐 Blue Dragons earn reverse sweep win over North Platte

The No. 4-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team made an early statement for the 2025 season in winning the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on Friday night at Fun Valley.

Led by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/kogo_cornelius_a3hy">Cornelius Kogo</a>, Blue Dragon runners finished first, second, third and fourth and had five runners in the Top 10 as Hutchinson captured its second Masterson Twilight team championship in the 10-year history of the event. The other team championship for Hutchinson came in 2018.

The Blue Dragons scored a Masterson Twilight team low score of 18 points (15 points is a perfect score in cross country). Wichita State was the team runner-up with 48 points and Garden City was third with 61 points.

The previous low team score in the Masterson Twilight was 23 points by Cloud County in 2019.

Hutchinson posted its fifth Top-3 finish in Masterson Twilight history.

Blue Dragon runners took immediate charge of the race with Kogo,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/kiprotich_titus_yvcm">Titus Kiprotich</a>&nbsp;and Faren Mangelson breaking away from the pack early.

Kogo won his first collegiate race with a time of 20:04.10, which is the 15th-fastest Masterson Twilight team in meet history. Kogo joins All-American and national champion Andrew Kibet as Blue Dragon runners to win the Masterson Twilight.

Kiprotich improved his 2024 Masterson Twilight time by 7 full seconds with a runner-up time of 20:25.41, the 16th-fastest time in meet history.

Mangelson jumped into the Top 25 Masterson club with a time of 20:27.36, which was good for third place and the 25th-best time in event history.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/ortega_esteban_lfb9">Esteban Ortega</a>&nbsp;made a tremendous stretch run to get by Wichita State's Austin Carerra by 0.17 seconds for fourth place with a time of 20:32.83.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/oses_esteban_x8g9">Esteban Oses</a>&nbsp;Campos also placed in the Top 10 for the Blue Dragons, placing 10th with a time of 21:10.55.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/ryan_max_p5gh">Max Ryan</a>&nbsp;placed 45th in his Blue Dragon debut with a time of 23:59.13.

👟 Kogo, No. 4 Blue Dragons sweep Terry Masterson Twilight Classic

Hutchinson Community College freshman women's cross country runner&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/roni_mildred_mud8">Mildred Rono</a>&nbsp;had quite a Blue Dragon debut on Friday night at Fun Valley.

Rono set two meet/course records in winning the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic individual title and leading the No. 15-ranked Blue Dragon women to a team runner-up finish.

Rono smashed the course record over the 3-mile course, becoming the first runner in the 10-year history of the event to break the 17-minute mark with a course-record and Invitational record time of 16:55.63 seconds. Rono beat the old course record of 17:34.75 set in 2023 by Fort Hays State's Regan Hodsden by 39.12 seconds.

Rono's winning margin of over women's runner-up Mercy Jepkoech of Wichita State of 55.30 seconds was also the widest margin of victory in the 10-year history of the Masterson Twilight.

Rono is the second-straight Blue Dragon to win the Masterson Twilight individual championship. Last year, NJCAA All-American Faith Jepchirchir won with a time of 16.17.0.

Wichita State repeated as team champion with 30 points. The Shockers had four runners place in the Top 10, including former Blue Dragon All-American Jordyn Picolet, who placed seventh with a time of 19:01.38.

The Blue Dragons were runner-up with 73 points. This was Hutchinson's seventh Top 3 finish at the Masterson Twilight. Garden City was third with 77 point and Tabor was fourth with 91 points.

Hutchinson had two runners overall in the individual Top 10 on Friday night.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/frater_ashara_sw1a">Ashara Frater</a>&nbsp;placed sixth with a time of 18:56.78.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/lovell_kimberlin_9kad">Kimberlin Lovell</a>&nbsp;placed 16th with a time of 20:18.35.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/ramey_eva_d580">Eva Ramey</a>&nbsp;was 21st with a time of 20:50.84.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/mcdonald_sabrina_qfz5">Sabrina McDonald</a>&nbsp;was 37th in a time of 22:15.38.

There were four runners who joined the all-time Top 25 club for the Masterson Twilight.

Wichita State's Jepkoech posted the fourth-fastest time in meet history. Garden City's Mai Meryeme was third with the 11th-best time in meet history of 18:13.88. Wichita State's Francesca Alvarado was fourth with the 19th-best time of 18:28.33.

👟 Rono obliterates course record to win Masterson Twilight

With the 2025 season-opening race on tap for Friday night, the Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team knows there are going to be plenty of eyes watching them this season.After matching the best national finish in team history with a third-place finish in the 2024 Division I National Championships, 4 of the top 5 runners from that team are back to defend their Jayhawk West and Region 6 titles and perhaps climb a little higher in the national championship podium in November.

"Our guys have had a great summer training and they have lot of momentum going from last fall," said third-year Blue Dragon head coach Jafet Molinares. "Tomorrow night, we are going to just try and knock some rust off and then just better each and every week."

The 2025 Blue Dragons open the season ranked fourth in the USTFCCCA/NJCAA Division I men's preseason rankings. Iowa Western, Butler and Iowa Central are the only teams ranked ahead of the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson opens its season on Friday with the annual Terry Masterson Twilight Classic at Fun Valley. The Blue Dragons' first 8K race will be September 20 at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Missouri.

Molinares said that he returns more top-level runners to a single team than he ever has before.

All 4 of those runners currently reside in the All-Time Blue Dragon Performances at 8,000 meters: 1.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/kiprotich_titus_yvcm">Titus Kiprotich</a>&nbsp;– 23:56.9; 2.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/cheruiyot_dennis_bxx4">Dennis Cheruiyot</a>&nbsp;– 23:58.9; 3.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/kogo_cornelius_a3hy">Cornelius Kogo</a>&nbsp;– 23:50.50 and 8.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2025-26/bios/mangelson_farrin_731i">Farrin Mangelson</a>&nbsp;– 24:28.3. Kiprotich and Cheruiyot traded the school 8K record for the final three meets of the season.

Kiprotich (Iten, Kenya) finished ninth and Cheruiyot (Eldoret, Kenya) was 10th at the national championships last season and Cheruiyot enters the season as the defending Region 6 and Jayhawk West Champions. Mangelson (San Antonio, Texas) and Kogo (Eldoret, Kenya) finished 21st and 28th, respectively, at nationals to earn NJCAA Coaches Association All-America awards.

Kiprotich and Cheruiyot traded the program 8K record in each of the final three races last season.

" The depth we have at the top is honestly really exciting," Molinares said. "They have trained so hard for this fall. It's a great time to be a Blue Dragon."

The three incoming freshman will provide depth for 2025.

Ortega just competed for Columbia in the Junior Pan-American games. On August 21, Ortega placed fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:19.2.

"He's going to be a Top 5 runner for us," Molinares said. "He's more of a distance-oriented type runner.

The Blue Dragons will be part of a very deep Region 6 this season with Butler starting the year No. 2, Hutchinson is No. 4, Garden City is No. 12, Colby is No. 19, Fort Hays Tech Northwest is No. 20, Dodge City is No. 22 and Cloud County is No. 23 in the preseason national rankings.

As far as the Masterson on Friday, the women's race starts at 8:30 p.m. with the men's race beginning around 9:05 p.m. The course will be soft with the rain that has fallen over the last week.

"There are going to be some muddy spots, but the exciting part about this race is that the course is going to be a true cross-country feel. Tomorrow night you through the times out the window and just compete."

👟 Loaded Blue Dragon men know expectations are high for 2025

Unlike his men's team and all of its returning experience, Hutchinson Community College head coach Jafet Molinares' Blue Dragon women's team underwent a complete roster turnover for 2025.

Six freshman runners begin their collegiate careers Friday for the Blue Dragons when they compete in the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic, which begins at 8:30 p.m. at Fun Valley.

"I'm very excited about this team," said Molinares, who is in his third season at Hutchinson. "We have a nice combination of distance runners and middle distance girls. We have some good Kansas girls and we have a lot of girls who put in a lot of miles this summer. I'm looking forward to Friday with this group."

Last season the Blue Dragons finished second in both the Jayhawk West and in Region 6. The Blue Dragons closed the season with a sixth-place finish at the 2024 NJCAA Division I Championships. Faith Jepchirchir was the individual national runner-up and Jordyn Picolet earned NJCAA Coaches Association All-America honors.

Regardless of the complete roster turnover, the Blue Dragon women start the season ranked No. 15 in the USTFCCCA/NJCAA Division I Preseason rankings, one of six Jayhawk Conference teams to be ranked.

"I'm a little shocked we are ranked, but I also think that is super exciting," Molinares said. "Last year the guys started No. 10 and we wound up No. 3. No. 15 is a great spot for the girls to start the season."

The 2025 Blue Dragons have four international runners and two in-state runners making up the roster.

The international runners are Mildred Rono (Iten, Kenya)&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/lovett_mali_ugil">Mali Lovett</a>&nbsp;(Adelaide, Australia),&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/frater_ashara_sw1a">Ashara Frater</a>&nbsp;(Trelawni, Jamaica) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/mcdonald_sabrina_qfz5">Sabrina McDonald</a>&nbsp;(Kingston, Jamaica).

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/lovell_kimberlin_9kad">Kimberlin Lovell</a>&nbsp;(Rose Hill) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/ramey_eva_d580">Eva Ramey</a>&nbsp;(McPherson) are the in-state runners. Last season Lovell finished 15th at the Kansas State Class 4A Championships with a time of (21:06.63). Ramey was 22nd in that same race with a time of 21:33.35.

The Blue Dragons open the season with the Masterson Twilight and will run their first 5K race on September 20 at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Missouri.

What inspires me, as the president of Fort Hays State University, is the impact of our students, faculty, and staff. What I love about Elle Hutchinson’s story is how it embodies the essential traits we relish at FHSU. Elle is a determined contender, an inspired innovator, and a caring individual. Elle’s journey in higher education has been nothing short of remarkable.

Elle shared that Fort Hays State University (FHSU) was the perfect fit for her when choosing a university. Growing up near Hays and engaging with FHSU alumni allowed her to appreciate the institution's value. Elle shared with me that the decision was ultimately grounded in affordability, the transferability of her credits from Barton Community College (BCC), and her desire to remain close to family.

Elle graduated with her associate’s degree from BCC, graduating with highest honors, just a week before she walked across the stage at Great Bend High School, a unique achievement that pushed the boundaries of what she thought was possible.

Like FHSU, BCC is very student-focused. When the leadership at BCC learned about Elle pursuing her high school diploma and her associate's degree simultaneously, they worked with Elle to create and promote a program designed to facilitate an academic pathway for other high school students. That spirit of innovation, of always blazing a new path, is precisely what FHSU is all about.

The challenge of pursuing two degrees simultaneously truly motivated Elle. She wanted to challenge herself, push beyond conventional boundaries, and set an exemplary trajectory for her educational experience. Hearing how other high school students benefited from the initiative Elle helped establish strengthened her resolve and motivated her to keep moving forward.

Managing coursework from two institutions (Great Bend High School and BCC) came with several obstacles. “I encountered skepticism from peers and guidance counselors who doubted my ability to succeed. However, this motivated me to seek assistance from those who believed in my potential. I found that surrounding myself with encouraging support systems was crucial.”

Maintaining balance among the demands of work, academics, and personal life is another skill Elle developed. Balancing her commitments meant focusing weekdays primarily on work and studies. This sometimes involved finding creative ways to integrate schoolwork into her social time, ensuring she could enjoy life while fulfilling her responsibilities. Through it all, Elle’s priority was always to remain close to family and friends.

Elle carried that philosophy with her to FHSU, where she served on the Student Government Association, holding several leadership roles, and as a student assistant in the Office of Student Fiscal Services. While at FHSU, she majored in Business Education – Corporate Communications. She chose this major for its versatility in the real world, plus its helpfulness in pursuing a legal career.

“Law has long been a field I aspired to enter, primarily due to its versatility and my passion for helping others. An attorney can do almost anything; they are not confined to just practicing law. Additionally, there is a lot of variety within the practice of law,” Elle shared

Elle is interested in agricultural law. Last summer, she interned at Bauer &amp; Pike Law Firm in Great Bend, which solidified her interest in the legal field and introduced her to the complexity and balance built into our legal system. She also benefited greatly from this real-world learning experience and from the dedicated mentorship she received.

Another pivotal experience for Elle was her employment as a student worker in the Student Fiscal Services office at FHSU. “I engaged with a team that shared professional guidance, and we became lifelong friends.” Working in Student Fiscal Services opened Ellie’s eyes to the available financial resources available to help keep the Fort Hays State experience affordable. She learned about many different scholarships that helped reduce the cost of tuition for her at FHSU. She also gained a heightened awareness of the financial resources that exist to make the next step in her academic career, law school, more affordable.

Staying focused on her academic and career goals often required establishing a balance in the demands for her time to ensure she still maintained a social life, which always remained important to her. “I believe that healthy interaction with friends can enhance productivity. Though I prioritized homework, I ensured that I scheduled social activities to maintain my mental health. This kept me motivated. There were many times when I had to make a tough decision to stay in and study rather than go out. You have to be willing to make sacrifices.”

Elle credits her achievements to her family. “They supported me through the good, the bad, and the ugly. I cannot imagine trying to do all of this without such amazing parents, support systems, and role models.”

Elle credits her remarkable success to her father, Shawn Hutchinson; her mother, Jamie Hutchinson; her BCC advisor, Karen Kratzer; the student fiscal services staff; and Dr. Wendy Rohleder-Sook, FHSU chairman of the department of communication studies, law, and political science. She is also grateful for the mentorship of Judge Charles Pike (Great Bend Municipal judge) and Julie Carroll, attorneys at the Bauer and Pike Law firm, where she interned last summer.

With her current studies completed, including a FHSU bachelor's degree earned with honors, she is taking a gap year before pursuing law school. In the interim, she is working in her family-owned small business, Satellite Pros &amp; Central Plains Security, and has recently accepted a position as a media consultant for Barton County.

As we celebrate Elle’s achievements, let us also recognize the spirit of those who support our students, from faculty to family. Together, we forge paths for the future, inspired by stories like Elle’s that remind us of the impact we can have in our communities. 

Here’s to Elle and all our students who strive for greatness, shaped by their experiences and determination, while driven to serve the greater good!

Marilyn Nelson, 68, passed peacefully on August 25, 2025, at her home in El Dorado, KS. Marilyn was born on December 31, 1956, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Jose and Ruth (Razo) Garcia.

In 1974, Marilyn graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended Hutchinson Community College. Marilyn married Michael Nelson on May 21, 1977, in Hutchinson, KS. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Being a grandmother kept Marilyn very busy. In the past years she enjoyed playing Bunko. When living in Ellsworth, KS, she started a Bunko group that continues today, 37 years later.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her son Joel Nelson.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Michael Nelson; two sons, Brian (Ashlee) Nelson and Bradley Nelson; one sister, Patty (Mike) Martindale; four brothers, Danny Garcia, Chris Garcia, Reuben (Mona) Garcia and Tom Garcia; four grandchildren, Pamela (Danny) Anderson, Maci, Jordan and Connor Nelson; and a great granddaughter, baby Lillian to come.

Marilyn was well loved by those who knew her and generous to those in need. Although she had an illness for many years, she never forgot a birthday or a special event for friends. She and her husband raised a special needs son who made many achievements due to Marilyns advocacy. Although known for having a pleasant personality, she could be firm and forceful in order to correct any situation. She will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. A private burial will take place in Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to Paradigm Services, Inc and&nbsp; can be sent in care to the funeral chapel.&nbsp;

Zora F. Johnson, 91, of Inman, died August 22, 2025, at Pleasant Hills, Hutchinson. Zora was born January 9, 1934, in Howard, Kansas, to G. Bufford and Lillian (Bennitt) McKinney.&nbsp;

Zora attended Elk Falls Rural High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1956 from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. Zora was a proud life-long teacher. She taught in Conway Springs and Hutchinson and ultimately taught Language Arts in Inman for 33 years.&nbsp;

Zora appreciated reading and obtaining knowledge. She enjoyed working in her yard in her spare time and while indoors would spend time working on crossword puzzles. Zora loved to volunteer and frequently was at Reins of Hope, Dillions Nature Center, and read to students at Obee Elementary.&nbsp;

On June 2, 1957, she married Ronald Johnson in Howard, Kansas. They shared nearly 50 years of marriage before his death on February 21, 2007.

Zora is survived by: children, Ronna Olivier of Manhattan, Rusty Johnson of Inman, and Tracie (Curtis) Johnson of Little River; grandchildren, Nathan (Carrie) Olivier, Robin (Jose) Franco, Rachel (Grant) Watkins, Dakota Olivier, Alexis (Jed) Gunn, Austin Johnson, Elizabeth (Andy) Wills, and Dessirae (Nick) White; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Ron Johnson; daughter-in-law, Vicki Johnson; son-in-law, Mike Olivier; brothers, Martin McKinney and Russell McKinney; and sister-in-law, Evelyn McKinney.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Reverend Linda Mohr officiating. Burial will follow at North Inman Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2025, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel. Friends may sign her book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until service time.&nbsp;

 </figure>Zora F. Johnson, 91, of Inman, died August 22, 2025, at Pleasant Hills, Hutchinson. Zora was born January 9, 1934, in Howard, Kansas, to G. Bufford and Lillian (Bennitt) McKinney.&nbsp;Zora attended Elk Falls Rural High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1956 from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. Zora was a proud life-long teacher. She taught in Conway Springs and Hutchinson and ultimately taught Language Arts in Inman for 33 years.&nbsp;Zora appreciated reading and obtaining knowledge. She enjoyed working in her yard in her spare time and while indoors would spend time working on crossword puzzles. Zora loved to volunteer and frequently was at Reins of Hope, Dillions Nature Center, and read to students at Obee Elementary.&nbsp;On June 2, 1957, she married Ronald Johnson in Howard, Kansas. Barbara Ann Sharp, 92, passed away December 21, 2024, at Waldron Place Senior Living Center which she lovingly referred to as her cruise ship docked on dry ground. &nbsp;She was born in Hutchinson, KS, June 15, 1932, to Albert Charles and Margaret (Miller) Schroder. &nbsp;Her mother later married Thomas Jefferson Sharp.

Barbara married the love of her life Lee Everett Sharp on October 3, 1981. &nbsp;They enjoyed taking cruises, weekend getaways, attending Ozark Christian College conferences, spending time with friends, bowling and playing cards.

Barbara attended Ludlow High School in Ludlow, Missouri. &nbsp;She was a guard on the girls’ basketball team and graduated valedictorian. &nbsp;She attended Salt City Business School graduating with high honors and was asked to stay on as the school’s secretary. &nbsp;After four years, Barbara expanded her horizons working at a job in Chicago before moving back to Kansas. &nbsp;She then worked at Hussey Insurance Company. &nbsp;She settled into a permanent hob with Santa Fe Trucking transferring to New Mexico when she worked until 1981.

Barbara volunteered for the American Red Cross, was a member of the ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) and was awarded Woman of the Year in 1989. &nbsp;She was church secretary until the age of 89! Bible study was an important part of her life continuing it until the last week of her life. &nbsp;She met for regular games of Hand and Foot and Uno, was an amazing Bible and regular trivia player as well as doing word puzzles and sudoku.

Barbara is survived by her: brothers, Marvin (Jackie) Schroder, Cornwall, PA and Ivan Schroder, Hannibal, MO; and nieces and nephews.
