Today marked a milestone for the Hutchinson Police Department as three of its newest officers — Officer Phillips, Officer Melillo, and Officer Padilla — officially graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) as part of Class 345.

The trio completed the intensive law enforcement training program, which equips recruits with the skills and knowledge necessary to serve Hutchinson with professionalism and integrity.

Following their graduation, the officers will begin their field training in the coming weeks, where they will continue to learn under the guidance of experienced officers while gaining real-world experience on patrol.

The department extended its congratulations to Phillips, Melillo, and Padilla, noting their commitment to public service and dedication to protecting the community.

Three new officers graduate from KLETC

Richard A. “Richie” Huddleston, Jr, 53, died August 21, 2025 at Halstead Health and Rehabilitation Center. Richie was born August 13, 1972 in Hutchinson, KS, to Richard A. and Roberta (Kipp) Huddleston.

Richie was a lifelong Hutchinson resident. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his beloved yorkie, Gizmo. He enjoyed watching wrestling and various car shows, going to the Kansas State Fair and was an avid collector of Hotwheels.

On May 8, 1998, Richie married Brenda Lee Matula in Hutchinson. They later divorced but remained close friends.

Richie is survived by: sons, Garrett Huddleston (Jamie Wonser), Hutchinson and Josh Redington, AK; daughter, Savannah Harris (Justin), Dover, AR; ex-wife, Brenda Matula, Hutchinson; sisters, Kristina Walden (Darrell), Hutchinson and Jacqueline Nobles, Oklahoma; and beloved yorkie, Gizmo; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, and an uncle, Jack Kipp, Sr.

Cody Grantlin Jackson, age 43, passed away August 7, 2025 in Boulder, Colorado, with family and close friends at his bedside.

He was born December 3, 1981 in Hutchinson, Kansas to John and Dana Bonham Jackson. He graduated from Nickerson high school, university of Kansas in Lawrence, and received a masters degree in clinical mental health from Naropa university in Boulder. He worked as a licensed therapist until his diagnosis of a glioblastoma brain tumor in March 2025.

He lived life to the fullest, the last 12 years in Boulder, where he found a community of amazing friends. He loved music and dancing, traveling and hiking, and the practices of yoga and meditation. He loved his family and his friends.

He was preceded in death by his father John, his grandparents, Orville and Jean Bonham, Betty Owen, and Bill Jackson, and his uncle Greg Jackson.

He is survived by his mother Dana Bonham Jackson in Lawrence, Kansas, siblings Kate Jackson Singogo of Asheville, North Carolina, Amy Rueschhoff Ballinger (Rick) of Kansas City, Kansas, Jason Rueschhoff (Jen) of Lawrence, Kansas, and many extended family members: aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews, and a whole community of friends in Boulder.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial to celebrate Cody‘s beautiful life will be held at a later date in Boulder. He will be greatly missed by many.

A newly released draft floodplain map could place large sections of Hutchinson into the 100-year floodplain, raising concerns for homeowners, schools, and businesses across the city. 

The State of Kansas and FEMA unveiled the draft maps Monday, and City Engineer Evan Patterson presented the findings to the Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday. The new maps reveal broad swaths of floodplain running northwest to southeast through the city, marking a sharp increase from the 2021 maps still in effect. 

While the draft maps are a slight improvement over a version issued in June, Patterson said the changes remain significant. If finalized, property owners in the floodplain could face new requirements, including mandatory flood insurance for those with federally backed mortgages. Development in these areas would also require floodplain permits and additional construction standards. 

“The earliest the maps could take effect is 2027, but we’re hopeful it will be later,” Patterson said, noting that Hutchinson has time to complete stormwater projects that could reduce the impacted area. The city has identified eight such projects, all of which could be completed by city crews and factored into the final maps. 

City officials also plan to review the models used to develop the maps, focusing on rainfall data, topography, and especially drainage infrastructure. “Drainage structures are where our review could make the most difference,” Patterson explained, pointing to work already underway on stormwater improvements. 

The potential impacts extend beyond homeowners. USD 308’s proposed new middle school sits within the newly mapped floodplain, meaning construction would need to be raised at least three feet above projected water levels—an expensive requirement involving dirt work and site elevation. Existing schools, city facilities, and subdivisions could also face costly adjustments. 

City Manager Enrico Villegas told council members he has scheduled discussions with U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran’s office to explore federal funding opportunities to help mitigate the effects. 

Officials stressed that the flooding risk in question stems not from Cow Creek but from localized rainfall combined with Hutchinson’s flat terrain, limited slope, and a lack of detention ponds. Standing water in streets and yards has long been an issue, and city leaders are weighing solutions such as widening ditches and expanding stormwater capacity. 

Some residents may qualify for reduced rates under the National Flood Insurance Program if their homes were built before floodplain designation. Still, Patterson acknowledged it would be a financial burden for many families. 

“We’ve essentially bought ourselves about two years,” a city representative said. “Anything we can get done in that time will be factored into the model and could shrink the floodplain.” 

City leaders cautioned against opting out of the federal flood program, noting it would make Hutchinson ineligible for federal disaster assistance if flooding occurred.

"I think we did really well during the preseason and we covered everything that we needed two in the preseason, but there is always room for improvement," said Acevedo Trent, who is 98-29 in four seasons at Odessa College, where she led the Wranglers to national tournament appearances in 2023 and 2024.

"I think that we have a lot of weapons at the net, both on the pins and in the middle," Acevedo Trent said. "They are making my job hard to pick what lineup is going to be out there. I think we are going to be a really good serving team and we are going to be very aggressive at the line. I think we are going to be a very good passing team in the end because we are facing tough competition every day."

The 2025 Blue Dragons won't be short on collegiate experience as Acevedo Trent begins to build up a program that has 10 Region 6 Championships, but hasn't been back to the NJCAA National Tournament since 2017.

The Blue Dragons return their top hitter from last season in Proctor (a 6-foot outside hitter from Nelson, British Columbia, Canada). She hit .185 and averaged 2.86 kills per set. She had 20 matches with 10 or more kills, including three of 20 or more with a career-high 22 against Vincennes University.
&nbsp;
"Atlyn has all the bones to be a great attacker," Acevedo Trent said. "She is just now learning to use her abilities to the best. She has grown up a lot. Before, she was just "see ball, attack ball." Now she is becoming more consistent with several different shots and she's become a better blocker, passer and server."
&nbsp;
Raschen, a 5-10 pin hitter from Independence, returns after limited duty as a freshman. Playing 25 sets in 18 matches, Raschen hit 0.53 with 0.68 kills per set. Follmer is a 5-10 middle from Chanute. She played in 88 sets in 32 matches last season and hit .142 on 1.11 kills per set. Follmer averaged 0.51 blocks. Used more as a serving specialist last season, Reupena (5'8 sophomore from Christchurch, Australia) will be one of the Dragons' two primary setters this season.

"From the day I got here, I noticed how Angela commands. When you are a setter, you have to be confident enough to run an offense. Angela definitely has that."

Two players on the 2025 Blue Dragon roster have national tournament experience.

The 6-1 sophomore from Lima, Peru, hit .142 and averaged 2.36 kills per set and 0.64 digs per set in 28 matches. Villanueva also played on Peru's national volleyball team.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/ferreira_nathalia_supd">Nathalia Ferreira</a>, a 6-1 middle from Brasilia, Brazil, played at Miami-Dade last season. She averaged 1.13 kills per set in 16 matches with the Sharks.

University of Louisiana transfer&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2025-26/bios/mcneil_jaylynn_8662">Jaylynn McNeill</a>&nbsp;is expected to improve the production from the right side. In 21 matches (73 sets) with the Ragin' Cajuns last season, McNeill hit .176 with 1.03 kills and 0.73 blocks per set.

"Jaylynn has a great block and she's very aggressive. She is a presence at the net," Acevedo Trent said. "We have a lot of girls who have played at a high level. We have players who played in the national tournament, so they know what it takes.

"Now it's about finding the right pieces and put them together. By the end of this season, it's going to be very exciting."

🏐 Acevedo Trent era officially begins for Blue Dragons this weekend

Some of the fastest dirt late models in the region will roar into the Kansas State Fairgrounds this weekend for the 2025 Super Dirt Showdown, a two-night racing event expected to draw competitors from across Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Colorado.

With some cars topping 900 horsepower, the showdown promises edge-of-your-seat action as the Kansas-based Rebel Late Model division squares off against Oklahoma’s Sooner division for bragging rights — and a share of $50,000 in prize money.

Racing kicks off both Friday and Saturday, with pits opening at 3 p.m., grandstand gates at 5 p.m., hot laps at 6:45 p.m., and the green flag dropping at 7:30 p.m.

Friday is Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Night, also designated as Kids Night. Thanks to the hospital’s sponsorship, children 12 and under will receive free admission.&nbsp;

“This community has really rallied behind the track,” said Salt City Racing promoter Phil Nightingale. “We don’t just see them as sponsors — they’re partners who are helping us make this possible.”

Nightingale said the track surface is in excellent condition following recent rain and grading. The historic half-mile oval — the largest in Kansas — is expected to provide ideal conditions for the showdown.

Super Dirt Showdown coming to Hutchinson 

Hutchinson Fire Department crews responded to a reported structure fire Friday morning in the 100 block of West Campbell Street.

Firefighters were dispatched at 9:43 a.m. and arrived to find light smoke coming from a small residential structure. Upon entering the home, crews located a smoldering electrical fire in the basement. The fire was quickly extinguished, and firefighters conducted a thorough search of the basement to ensure it had not spread through the floor joists.

Two occupants of the home had already made it outside safely before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

The fire was contained to a small area of floor joists in the basement, though smoke damage was reported throughout the home’s living space.

Hutchinson Fire expressed appreciation to partner agencies who assisted at the scene, including Kansas Gas, Evergy, Reno County EMS, Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications, and the Hutchinson Police Department.

Electrical fire contained in Hutch home, no injuries reported

Larry Luman, a long-time Hutchinson resident, died Friday, August 15, 2025, at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City. He was 77 years old.&nbsp;

Larry was a devoted husband to Mary Luman and a loving dad to Cris (Lyle) Paulson of Hutchinson, Kara (Chris) Ackerman of Monument, Colorado, and Kim (Mark) Johnson of Hutchinson. He was incredibly proud of his seven grandkids: Kayla Paulson, Cassie Paulson, Jake Ackerman, Jessa Ackerman, Allie Johnson, Logan Johnson, and Luke Johnson. He loved his brother Richard (Mary) Luman, his brother-in-law Tom Brookover, his brother-in-law Gary (Sherry) Brookover and his brother-in-law John Graves, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and a multitude of friends.&nbsp;

A 1965 graduate of Hutchinson High School, Larry was drafted into the United States Army in 1966 and proudly served in Vietnam as an SP5 Intelligence Analyst. After 22 months and 5 days of service, he received an honorable discharge in 1968. Larry always carried deep pride in his military service. Soon after returning home, he met a young nursing student, Mary Brookover. The two were married on August 8, 1970, and just one week before his passing, they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.&nbsp;

Larry pursued his education at Hutchinson Community College, graduating in 1974, and proceeded to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Wichita State University in 1976. His professional career included work as a corporate accountant for Jackson Ice Cream/Kroger and later Sonoco. He often spoke fondly, however, of his earliest jobs delivering newspapers and washing dishes at Skaets - experiences that reflected his humble beginnings and instilled the strong work ethic he carried throughout his life.&nbsp;

Larry had a lifelong love of cars, whether it was driving his antiques, attending car shows or watching car races. He was a faithful attendee of the car races, sitting in the same seat at the Hutchinson Nationals for over 50 years. After returning home from Vietnam, he paid cash for his 1969 Chevelle SS, a car he treasured throughout his life. He was a member of the Mid State Street Rods.&nbsp;

He shared a unique connection with each of his family members, giving them nicknames, spending quality time with each of them, lending a helping hand, and guiding them through life with his calm demeanor. He was always talking and laughing. He loved gardening and watching the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. He also loved to spend time on the Brookover family farm in Greenwood County, camping, fishing, and deer hunting. He enjoyed time with The Cruisers, whether on land or sea. He looked forward to having breakfast with the Sonoco group. He was a great neighbor, and a loyal friend, especially to his 1965 Salthawk classmates.&nbsp;

He was a long-time member and supporter of Park Place Christian Church.&nbsp;

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wilbur and Gladys Luman, his sisters Marcia Johnson and Donna Graves, and in-laws John and Bessie Brookover.&nbsp;

Larry’s burial has taken place in a private family service. A memorial for Larry will be held at Park Place Christian Church in Hutchinson on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard, with a reception following. An area of the church parking lot will be designated for classic cars to arrive early. Please honor Larry by bringing your classic cars and feel free to wear street rod or racing T-shirts. Friends and family may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) is expanding its agricultural education offerings with the launch of a new John Deere Technician Program, created through a partnership with PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision Equipment.&nbsp;

The program, the second&nbsp;in Kansas, will allow students to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree while receiving specialized training to become certified John Deere service technicians.&nbsp;

“This has been a project in the works for several years,” said Sheldon Stewart, department co-chair of the Agriculture, Business, Computers &amp; Technology Department at HutchCC. “When students complete the two-year program, they’ll graduate with both a degree and John Deere certification, ready to step into the workforce.”&nbsp;

The program is designed to go beyond the college’s existing one-year diesel program. During the first year, students will complete HutchCC’s traditional curriculum. In the second year, they will transition to John Deere-specific training, working directly on equipment and technology at PrairieLand Partners’ dealership near the U.S. 50/K-61 junction. The dealership is expanding its facilities to accommodate the program.&nbsp;

Students will gain hands-on experience alongside certified technicians both in the shop and in the field. Each student must be sponsored by a John Deere dealership, which commits to hiring the student for at least two years after graduation.&nbsp;

“This is truly a hands-on, career-driven program,” Stewart said. “Students come out with little to no debt, a high-demand certification, and a good-paying career that can last a lifetime.”&nbsp;

Industry leaders say the program addresses a critical workforce shortage. PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision, which operate dealerships across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are seeking to expand their technician workforce by as much as 25 percent.&nbsp;

Stewart noted that the program also helps strengthen ties between HutchCC and the agricultural community. “Farmers rely on this technology to keep producing, and our students will be trained to keep that equipment running,” he said. “Agriculture isn’t going away, and this program ensures our graduates are prepared for the future—whether that’s with autonomous tractors, electric-powered combines, or other emerging technology.”&nbsp;

The first class of John Deere Technician students began on Wednesday at HutchCC’s South Campus near Yoder, with specialized training taking place at PrairieLand Partners' expanded Hutchinson facility.&nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1100 block of East 30th on the south side.

I thought I would do an article on the history of mini golf in Hutchinson. The first miniature golf courses in Hutchinson sprang up in the 1930s, mostly unorganized and on vacant corner lots.

The first real course was opened by E.L. Semke of Enid, Oklahoma, on the southeast corner of 25th Avenue and North Main on June 20, 1946.

Roller City, at 1035 E. 30th Ave., opened its mini course on July 15, 1960, and was there until 1974 under the Skatemore name.

In 1964, Wheeler Broughton managed a course at Clowntown Kiddieland.

Countryside Miniature Golf, run by Leon Scott, was at 1420 E. 30th Ave. from 1966 to about 1980.

Robert Gilett opened the Shady Lane miniature golf at Fun Valley May 30, 1985, until 1988.

Putt-Putt Miniature Golf was owned by Phil and Cindy Schmitt from 1986 to 1997. The first photo shows the Putt-Putt clubhouse at opening in 1986 at 1101 E. 30th Ave.

After a long drought of these venues in Hutchinson, Hutch Putt was opened in 2017 at 1500 N. Lorraine, owned by Cliff Shank. The fifth photo shows the course on opening day.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Law enforcement officers across Kansas will trade their patrol cars for coffee counters Friday morning as part of the statewide “Cops at Donut Shops” fundraiser benefiting Special Olympics Kansas.

From 7 to 10 a.m. Aug. 22, officers with the Law Enforcement Torch Run will be at stand-alone Dunkin’ locations in 10 Kansas cities, including Hutchinson at 1533 E. 17th Ave., collecting free-will donations for Special Olympics athletes. Contributions will help fund training, competitions and community programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

“We are thrilled to partner with Dunkin’ and the community to support our athletes through this engaging event,” said Jake LaMunyon, director of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Kansas. “Every dollar raised helps create opportunities for our athletes to thrive through sports, health, and leadership.”

Participating cities include Andover, Derby, Hutchinson, Lenexa, Manhattan, Olathe, Overland Park, Shawnee, Topeka and Wichita. Dunkin’ shops in Wichita, Andover, Hutchinson and Derby will also offer $2.49 lattes with a donation during the event.

Local deputies from the Reno County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand at the Hutchinson Dunkin’ location to greet customers and accept contributions.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Smallville Festival, which celebrates Hutchinson’s identity as the Superman-inspired “Smallville, Kansas,” is returning to the leadership of its original founder.

Since 2015, Hutchinson Recreation Commission has organized the annual festival after assuming responsibility at the request of its founding members. The event, which began in 2012, has grown into a community celebration featuring public events tied to Hutchinson’s comic book connection.

“Hutch Rec has enjoyed the past 10 years of providing public events under the Smallville Festival,” Hutch Rec Executive Director Anthony Finlay said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Hutchinson in such a unique way and to bring people together through this event.”

Festival founder Christopher Wietrick will once again guide the event. He expressed excitement about continuing the tradition he helped establish.

Smallville Festival returns to founder’s direction

Harold L. Tegethoff was born February 26, 1936, in Morrowville, KS, to George M. and Ursula (Scheetz) Tegethoff. &nbsp;He died August 18, 2025, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. &nbsp;

Harold was raised on the farm, and attended Fairbury Junior College, Fairbury, NE, while working at a windmill factory. &nbsp;He attended Kansas State University, changed his major to education, and completed his Bachelor of Education at Emporia State University. &nbsp; Harold’s junior high mathematics teaching career began at Hutchinson USD 308 Central Junior High, in 1960. &nbsp;He continued teaching until his retirement in 1994 from Hutchinson High School and part-time at Hutchinson Community College. &nbsp;While teaching, Harold commuted to Emporia, where he completed his Master of Education degree.

In 1975, Harold married Linda Johnson Nerad, in Wichita. &nbsp;Together, they raised Linda’s two daughters, Denise and Michelle. &nbsp;One of his joys was helping to raise Michelle’s five-year-old son, Robert Lounsbury III, during the six months she was deployed to Italy and Sarajevo while serving in the United States Air Force. Harold and Robert enjoyed their daily visit to Fraese Drug Soda Fountain, where Harold continued to meet with his coffee buddies. &nbsp;The coffee buddies were solving the world’s problems, but more than that, they were a valuable support group to each other.

Harold was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. &nbsp;His deep Catholic faith led him to begin a Perpetual Adoration prayer hour on Sunday nights, in 1989. &nbsp;Harold treasured his quiet time with the Lord. &nbsp;He was a member of the Thursday morning Cursillo men’s prayer group and frequently attended daily mass as well as Saturday Mass.

Harold will be remembered for his thoughtful kindness. &nbsp;After his retirement, he was the homemaker in charge of vacuuming and all household chores, while Linda continued working another 17 years. Harold always appreciated Linda’s home cooking and even insisted on doing the dishes as an expression of his gratitude.

Harold is survived by: &nbsp;his wife of almost 50 years, Linda; stepdaughters, Denise Avery (Robert Scott Avery) and Michelle Hurst; grandchildren, Christopher P. E. Avery (Marie Moses), Catherine R. Avery (Jacob Gonedridge), and Robert L. Lounsbury III; great-grandsons, Christopher J.P. Avery and Emitt Avery; great-granddaughter, Alice Lounsbury; brother, Robert Tegethoff; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma Brandt.

Parish Rosary will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2025, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m., both at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson, with Father Jerome Spexarth officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. &nbsp;Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Jack Joseph Gagnebin, 82, of Abbyville, died August 18, 2025, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born November 29, 1942, in Hutchinson, to Joseph J. and Vesta M. (Bridgeman) Gagnebin.

Jack grew up in Abbyville, Kansas, and graduated from Fairfield North High School in 1961. He attended Hutchinson Community College for one year before joining the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged, Jack returned to Abbyville and took over his father’s business, Gagnebin Gas and Oil, delivering fuel to local farmers. He later became a truck driver, hauling cattle for Branson Truck Line in Lyons for a number of years. Jack also enjoyed his time as a USD 310 school bus driver for over 20 years. He loved duck hunting and enjoyed snow skiing and lake activities, mainly driving the boat pulling family and friends. But Jack was most happy with his family around him and attending his grandchildren's activities - his grandchildren were the light of his life. He was a member of Plevna Community Bible Church.

On November 28, 1964, Jack married Sharon L. Dennis, at the Plevna Community Bible Church.

He is survived by: his beloved wife of over 60 years, Sharon Gagnebin of the home; sons, Michael Gagnebin and wife Emily of Wichita, Darin Gagnebin and wife Nancy of Paola; grandsons, Noah and Levi Gagnebin of Wichita, granddaughters, Mckenzie Gagnebin of St. Louis, Missouri, Bailey Gagnebin of Paola; and many extended family members.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Marilyn Gagnebin, Alice Nadine Gagnebin, and Joan Loudenback.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Plevna Community Bible Church, with Pastor David E. Green officiating. Private family inurnment will take place later.

Four nonprofit organizations will take the stage to present bold, community-driven solutions in UWRC’s focus areas of youth opportunity, healthy community, financial stability, and community resiliency. More than $25,000 in funding is up for grabs, with finalists competing for awards decided by a panel of judges and audience votes.

Brian Martin, a former Hutchinson Community College basketball player who went on to play at Kansas and in the NBA, died Friday. He was 62.

Martin, a 6-foot-9 forward from Fort Smith, Arkansas, played one season for the Blue Dragons in 1980-81 under coach Gary Bargen. He helped lead HutchCC to a 24-8 record, including a 6-4 mark in the Jayhawk Conference to finish second. The Blue Dragons were dominant at home with a 13-3 record, went 3-5 on the road and were perfect in neutral-site contests at 8-0. That season ended with Hutchinson capturing the program’s 11th Region VI championship before falling in the NJCAA Bi-District game.

From HutchCC, Martin transferred to Kansas, where he played three seasons from 1981-84 under coaches Ted Owens and Larry Brown. He averaged 3.6 points and 3.2 rebounds as a sophomore, improving to 5.1 points and 5.1 rebounds as a senior captain during Brown’s first year. The Jayhawks won the Big Eight tournament that season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Martin was selected in the ninth round of the 1984 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers and split the 1985-86 season with Portland and Seattle. He later played six years in the Continental Basketball Association, winning a title with Tampa Bay in 1985, and also competed professionally in Belgium, Germany, Spain and Italy.

After retiring from basketball, Martin returned to Wichita in 2002 and built a career in insurance and banking while remaining active in civic and faith organizations.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Ridgepoint Church in Wichita.

🏀 Brian Martin, former HutchCC, KU and NBA player, dies at 62

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The defending national champion Hutchinson Community College football team will open the 2025 season where it left off last December, on top of the NJCAA rankings.

The Blue Dragons were voted the unanimous No. 1 team in the NJCAA Division I preseason poll released Monday, receiving all 12 first-place votes. Hutchinson finished the 2024 season 11-1 and captured the program’s second national championship with a 28-23 victory over Iowa Western in Canyon, Texas.

Last fall, the Blue Dragons climbed to No. 1 by the third week of the season and remained in the top three for the remainder of the year. They dominated No. 2 Georgia Military 63-21 in the semifinals before outlasting Iowa Western in the title game.

The poll marks the seventh consecutive season Hutchinson has opened with a national ranking. Under head coach Drew Dallas, the Blue Dragons have been ranked in 62 of the 68 polls released during his tenure, holding the No. 1 position 36 times. Hutchinson has now appeared in 49 straight national polls dating back to 2021.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The defending national champion Hutchinson Community College football team will open the 2025 season where it left off last December, on top of the NJCAA rankings.The Blue Dragons were voted the unanimous No. 1 team in the NJCAA Division I preseason poll released Monday, receiving all 12 first-place votes. Hutchinson finished the 2024 season 11-1 and captured the program’s second national championship with a 28-23 victory over Iowa Western in Canyon, Texas.Last fall, the Blue Dragons climbed to No. 1 by the third week of the season and remained in the top three for the remainder of the year. They dominated No. 2 Georgia Military 63-21 in the semifinals before outlasting Iowa Western in the title game.The poll marks the seventh consecutive season Hutchinson has opened with a national ranking. Under head coach Drew Dallas, the Blue Dragons have been ranked in 62 of the 68 polls released during his tenure, holding the No. 1 position 36 times. 🏈 HutchCC enters 2025 season as unanimous No. 1 in NJCAA preseason poll

Stanley Thompson “Stan” Kemmis, 89, went to his heavenly home on August 16, 2025, at Diversicare Nursing Home in Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He was born on May 23, 1936, in Sidney, Montana, to George and Elizabeth (Ferrick) Kemmis. Stan was number 7 out of 8 children in the Kemmis family and was the last of the siblings to pass away. &nbsp;Although he just turned 89 in May, he chose to tell everyone that he was 90 “because it’s close enough”.&nbsp;

Stan graduated from Sidney High School in 1954 and joined the United States Navy in 1956. On September 6, 1958, he married Peggy Roberts of Fairview, Montana. &nbsp;They raised three children, Rick, Jon and Debra. &nbsp;They later divorced. She survives. &nbsp;

Stan was a dreamer, and his ambitions led his family to many different locations across the United States. He served in the United States Navy stationed in Oakland, California and the United States Air Force stationed in Altus, Oklahoma. Stan received a bachelor’s degree in history from Oklahoma University and a master’s degree in geography from Oklahoma State University. Upon graduation he accepted a job in Pratt, Kansas where his children graduated from high school.

Stan was the owner of an RV Center in Cullison, KS. He also ran a home improvement business that supplied nursing homes with tables and equipment that he designed and built. After Stan’s retirement, he restored cars and remodeled homes. He gravitated towards smaller communities as Stan enjoyed the hometown atmosphere. He adopted many pets as the years went by. Stan’s latest companion was his dog, Dudley.&nbsp;

Stan is survived by his children: Rick (Barb) Kemmis of Mission, KS; Jon (Brenda) Kemmis of Watertown, SD; and Debbie (Terry) Field of Hutchinson, KS; 8 grandchildren, Nick Kemmis, Eric Kemmis, Jordan (Mark) Brown, Jonathan (Amber) Kemmis, Jared (Stacey) Kemmis, Jason Kemmis, Cory Field, and Kelsi (Cody) Rietcheck; and 13 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Stan was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents; brothers, Kenneth, Winton, Merton, Quincy, Eldon; and sisters, Jane Norton and Mary Domonoske.&nbsp;

Cremation has taken place. &nbsp;Graveside service with military honors will be held at Pioneer Cemetery, Sidney, Montana, at a later date. &nbsp; Condolences for the family may be sent to elliottmortuary.com.

Retail center, Dillon’s Fuel Station in Hutchinson sell for $3.4 million

Kelly Carson Crow, 62, passed away peacefully in his home on 8-4-2025. He was born on 9-19-1962 in Hutchinson Kansas, the son of Francis Crow and Patricia Crow. He lived in South Hutchinson his entire childhood and went to Nickerson High School.

He met his wife, Angie, in 1985 and they married in 1993. They have two sons. Max Crow and Eric Crow. 

He worked at his dad's shop, Pat's Used Cars, for many of his young years and then opened up a mechanic shop of his own in South Hutchinson and named it after his oldest son. Max's Automotive. He was a mechanic for twelve years and then he and Angie started a cleaning business. They worked side by side for twelve years and would joke, "And we're still happily married!"

He became a grandfather for the first time nine months ago to a beautiful little girl, Vivian Crow. And she was the light of his life.

Over the years he was a drummer in a local band and a self taught potter, but his true passions were sailing his Prindle catamaran and riding his motorcycle. 

Some of his other loves in life included reading, spending time with his family, stargazing and sitting amongst the flowers in his backyard. He referred to it as his "walled garden". 

A celebration of life will be held in the&nbsp; fall.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas is making history today, honoring the voices, vision, and impact of women in sports media with the first-ever observance of Women in Sports Broadcasting Day.&nbsp;

The day was proclaimed by Gov. Laura Kelly at the urging of KSN-TV sports anchor and reporter Asia Cymone Smith, whose advocacy turned a personal mission into a statewide recognition. For Smith, the proclamation is more than a ceremonial gesture, it’s a statement of value in an industry where women still make up just 38% of sports broadcasting roles in Kansas, according to a review of recent staff directories from stations in Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City.&nbsp;

“It’s something that felt surreal, something that I’d been thinking about for a long time,” Smith said. “I wanted to make sure that women, us hard-working women who are also putting in work here, are recognized. This is a testament to the recognition and the work we’ve put in. And it highlights contributions of the former women in sports broadcasting and the ones to come.”&nbsp;

Smith, who also serves as Miss Kansas USA, has made women in sports broadcasting a central part of her public platform. She operates a mentorship initiative called Girls Talk Game, aimed at uplifting young girls who aspire to careers in the field through school visits, group sessions and one-on-one coaching. “I want to be the help that I always wish I had when I first got started,” she said. “I want to be that person that teaches them the ropes so they don’t have to struggle and so they have the same opportunities to learn and get the knowledge they need to succeed.”&nbsp;

That desire was shaped by her own experiences. Early in her career, she was once told, “We’re not here to hold your hand or teach you the ropes.” 

It was a moment that stayed with her, and one she vowed not to repeat with the next generation. 

“For every little girl who really is watching the TV news and sees us, I want them to know that it’s possible, no matter what other people tell you, when they tell you, you don’t belong in the industry,” Smith said. “Those are comments we get all the time. And I want them to know those people can’t define your success.”&nbsp;

The proclamation also honors the women who have inspired others on the national stage. It names Kansas-connected journalists such as Becky Dixon, the first woman to co-host ABC’s Wide World of Sports; Aminia Smith, a former sports journalist in Lawrence now hosting ESPN’s SportsCenter; and Kendra Douglas, a former Wichita sports anchor now working as an NBA sideline reporter. Smith said seeing them succeed at such high levels serves as proof of what’s possible. “They’re inspirations to us who are sitting here today,” she said.&nbsp;

Joining Smith in celebrating the day are KAKE-TV sports director Micaela Dea and KWCH-TV multimedia journalist Rachel Hallam. Though they work at competing stations, the three regularly cross paths on the sidelines, at press conferences and in locker rooms, and have forged a bond over shared experiences.

And of course, I want to pay tribute to all the other women before us that have literally trailblazed the way.”&nbsp;Dea, who became KAKE’s first female sports director last year, said she is encouraged by how far the industry has come. “I can’t imagine where it will be in the next twenty years or the next couple of decades,” she said. “But I definitely am proud to be one of those women in sports that loves to empower other women.”&nbsp;Hallam said the observance is a meaningful acknowledgment of both the progress made and the challenges that remain. “It means everything,” Hallam said. “It’s hard to be in this industry in the first place, and then how hard it is to be a woman in this industry. Just for everybody to finally recognize that, not just ourselves and not just the other women that are in this industry, but to know that it is still a growing industry and we still have opportunities laid out in front of us.”&nbsp;Smith said she hopes today’s recognition sparks more opportunities for women in leadership roles, production and high-profile analyst positions in men’s sports. “There’s a lot of leadership positions I think can still be filled,” she said. “Women have completely trailblazed and transformed the sideline reporter role. But why not have those same broadcasters be analysts for the NBA and for the NFL? Our perspective is important and should be shown, too.” She pointed to growing momentum in women’s sports coverage, from WNBA expansion to record-breaking college softball and volleyball crowds, as proof that the appetite is there for more women’s voices. “I think it’s continuing to grow, and that’s great to see,” she said.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>While Women in Sports Broadcasting Day is new, those celebrating it hope it becomes an annual touchpoint for progress. “I hope every girl watching sees this and thinks, ‘That can be me,’” Smith said. “Because it absolutely can.”&nbsp;The proclamation urges Kansans to join in recognizing the achievements of women in sports media and to support ongoing efforts toward equality in the profession. For Smith, Dea and Hallam, that means continuing to show up for each other, and for the young women they hope will follow in their footsteps.&nbsp;“We’re supposed to be competitors,” Hallam said, “but we’re constantly having each other’s backs.
