Rosemary “Rosie” Sandoval, 85, died July 21, 2024, in Baker, FL. She was born June 13, 1939, in Hutchinson, to John “Johnny” and Helen (Cordova) Garcia.&nbsp;

Rosie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1957, and Salt City Business College. She worked as legal secretary for Branine-Chalfant and Hill. Rosie was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. She enjoyed shopping with friends, going to casinos, watching Hallmark Christmas movies and spending time with her family.

On January 20, 1962, she married Arturo Sandoval Jr. They shared over 55 years of marriage, prior to his death on March 12, 2017.

Rosie is survived by: sons, Rick (Charolette) Sandoval of Baker, FL, David (Michelle) Sandoval of Hutchinson, Mark (Val) Sandoval of Wichita; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Carol (John) Perez, John (Mary) Garcia, Christina Walenhaupt and Betty Iverson, all of Hutchinson, and Daryl Bentson of Omaha, NE.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; grandsons, Rion Sandoval and Isaac Sandoval.

Paul Wilson Dillon, 97, passed away at home in the early afternoon of July 18, 2024, surrounded by the boundless love of family and caregivers. Earlier that morning, he picked with assistance a bouquet of brightly-colored zinnias to give family later in the day—flowers he and his recently deceased wife Ruth grew and joyfully gifted for years. Kindnesses such as this, enabled by a bountiful home, a knack for growth, and an attentive nature, characterize Paul’s life.&nbsp;

Born on August 4, 1926 to parents Clyde and Flora (Jones) Dillon, Paul lived in Hutchinson, Kansas for all but five years of his life. Service in the Navy during WWII and a college degree in 1950 from the University of Kansas where he was a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity leader comprised his years away. After meeting Ruth (Muirhead) on a blind date arranged by a childhood friend, Paul fell in love quickly and married Ruth at First Methodist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 19, 1949. The two shared a long and fortunate life filled with respect, good humor, world-wide adventure, family traditions, and the best of friends.&nbsp;

Paul lived in five Hutchinson homes, the first on the corner of 15th and Main, near his grandmother’s and a block from Dillons grocery store #8, and the last two in a neighborhood selected to reside near family and friends. Paul and Ruth cherished their last home, on Kisiwa Parkway, for 53 years.&nbsp;

In younger years, Paul ran track, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and enjoyed family rock-hunting and camping trips. He assisted his father and Uncle Ray, along with cousins Ace and Dick, in nearly every aspect of Dillons grocery stores. When Paul was 15, his father died tragically, and invaluable support came, as it did throughout his life, from his mother, sister Betsy, Uncle Ray and Aunt Stella, cousins Ace and Dick, Hutchinson’s First Presbyterian Church, the extended Dillons community, and Boy Scout Troop #1 (Troop #301).&nbsp;

Family business roots—a successful Hutchinson-area brickmaking business led by his maternal grandmother Lura Chase Jones and the Dillons grocery store business on his father’s side of the family—shaped Paul’s work ethic and dedication. As with his entire life, Paul’s career as Dillons Secretary-Treasurer exhibited fairness, foresight, ingenuity, and good will. For Paul, being on time meant arriving at least five minutes early, and he was always early. He impressively balanced work, family, fun, and friendship, and when faced with life’s challenges responded with curiosity and commitment.&nbsp;

Throughout his life, Paul kept close relationships, including ones with friends he’d run track and scouted with in his youth. He eagerly picked up family and friends for golf, tennis, lunch, dinner, or celebrations at Prairie Dunes Country Club and other local venues. &nbsp;A Scoutmaster for decades in Hutchinson Troop #1, Paul received regional and national awards and positively influenced hundreds of Scouts for whom Paul’s expression, “Good night, Scouts,” lives on with highest regard.&nbsp;

Strong believers in service to community, Paul and Ruth were among the founders of the Hutchinson Community Foundation, where Paul served as an investment advisor for over 25 years. He volunteered whenever he could, most recently at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center assisting with computers.&nbsp;

Paul relished picnicking and skiing in Aspen and teaching his children and grandchildren to ski. He was always the last one off the mountain even with a broken shoulder and put away his skis in his mid-80s without announcing his last run down the mountain. Other favorite activities included swapping stories, traveling, gardening, birdwatching, especially for orioles, fishing, curating fish tanks, any family event, giving grandkids tractor rides, and hobbies that created items he could give away.&nbsp;

To thousands he gifted “Paul’s Pickles,” over 300 hooked rugs, and more than 10,000 reindeer made of wood and catalpa leaves from the family farm outside Hutchinson. Paul grinned quickly, paid bills as early as possible, prized making “Dad and Grandpa eggs,” preferred plaid flannel shirts, khaki pants, and white socks (much to Ruth’s dismay), craved homemade grape ice cream, favored huskies, and loved teasing Ruth. When you shared time with Paul Dillon, he and you felt special.

An unflappable and admirable team, Paul and Ruth lovingly raised three remarkable children: David Dillon, Ann Ramseyer, and Mary Dillon. Paul remains a beloved father, grandfather to nine, and great-grandfather to 17 (and one on the way). His was a loved and loving son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, cousin, nephew, father-in-law, and friend. He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 75 years Ruth Dillon, his parents, his Uncle Ray and Aunt Stella, his cousin Ace and wife Betty, and Paul’s cousin Dick, and many close friends and family members.&nbsp;

Born July 29, 1934, in Leoti, Wichita County, Kansas, Marlene was the fifth child of Ernest and Martha Lungwitz. She graduated from Wichita East High School in 1952 and attended Hutchinson Community College where she met the love of her life, William Henry Ernsting, in the fall of 1952. It was love at first sight and they were married June 27, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wichita. The couple lived in Ogden, Kansas, while William served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Riley, and then moved to Hays, Kansas. The couple lived in Honduras in 1957-58 before locating to Ellinwood, Kansas, where she resided for the next 66 years.

Marlene and William operated the Ernsting family farm south of Ellinwood for 15 years before establishing Ernsting Radiator Service (Ernsting’s Inc.) in 1972. They were a team in the business that provided dozens of local youth their first jobs, and the company remains a steady employer to the current day. She was dedicated to service at St. John’s Lutheran Church in a variety of leadership roles and remained active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League for more than 50 years. Marlene was an initial and long-time board member for the international Lutheran mission agency Lead a Child. She was elected to two consecutive terms (1989-1997) on the Barton Community College Board of Trustees.

She served on the board and volunteered at the Barton County Historical Society for more than 20 years.

She loved to travel, was a voracious reader, an avid bridge player, believed red wine far superior to white, and followed every pitch, pass, and shot of the Royals, Chiefs, Shockers, Wildcats, Jayhawks, and Cougars. In the spring she gardened, which meant she pulled weeds, planted flowers, and then pulled more weeds. She famously entertained family and friends at her pool and patio in the summers to the sounds of splashing, laughing, and the slam of the back door as she entered the house for more beverages, snacks, or one more towel. In more recent days, she waged a long war with her cell phone.

Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, William Ernsting (2010), and son Matthew Ernsting (2019); and siblings LeRoy Lungwitz and Kenneth Lungwitz. She is survived by her sons Guy Ernsting of Ellinwood, Kansas, and Andrew Ernsting and his wife, Kristi, of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Levi Ernsting, Rebeka Watson, Jena Lynn, Drew Ernsting, and Jake Ernsting, four great grandchildren; and siblings Lillian Frey, Lorna Hohman, and Leon Lungwitz.

Funeral service will take place 10:30 AM, Wed., July 24 at St. John Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood, KS. TROON, Scotland —Former Hutchinson Community College golfer Dominic Clemons' first-ever major championship came to a close on Friday at the Royal Troon Golf Club.

Clemons missed the cut at the 152nd edition of The Open Championship after carding a 7-over 78 second round on Friday.

The former NJCAA All-American finished tied for 136th overall with a 13-over two-day total.&nbsp;

Clemons did finish above some notable names on the leaderboard, including Tiger Woods (+14), Wyndham Clark (+16) and John Daly (Withdrew).

 </figure>SEAN BOSTON Hutch PostTROON, Scotland —Former Hutchinson Community College golfer Dominic Clemons' first-ever major championship came to a close on Friday at the Royal Troon Golf Club.Clemons missed the cut at the 152nd edition of The Open Championship after carding a 7-over 78 second round on Friday.The former NJCAA All-American finished tied for 136th overall with a 13-over two-day total.&nbsp;Clemons did finish above some notable names on the leaderboard, including Tiger Woods (+14), Wyndham Clark (+16) and John Daly (Withdrew).Below is the scorecard for Clemons' second round showing.<figure>

⛳ HutchCC alum Clemons misses cut at The Open Championship

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School graduate, Caleb Walker, will once again compete in The Basketball Tournament this weekend for the AfterShocks.

Walker graduated from Hutch High in 2008 before going on to play two seasons at Butler Community College in El Dorado and then his final two seasons at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.&nbsp;

Walker moved to Hutchinson when he was 13 after growing up in Kansas City. He won four consecutive state titles as a linebacker on the Salthawks' football team during it's dynasty. He averaged over 19 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game as a senior for the Salthawk basketball team.

The 34-year-old was a crucial piece to the AfterShocks' success in TBT last summer. He is currently playing overseas in France.

The AfterShocks are the alumni team for Wichita State University. They are 11-4 all-time in TBT, including a loss in the quarterfinals last summer.

🏀 Hutch High grad to compete in TBT this weekend

A total of 73 Hutchinson Community College student-athletes were named to the NJCAA All-Academic teams for the 2023-24 academic season, which was released on Thursday.
The Blue Dragons had 28 student-athletes on the NJCAA&apos;s first-team list, which represents student-athletes with 4.00 grade-point averages. The Blue Dragons had 21 athletes on the second team, which represents grades of 3.80 to 3.99. The Blue Dragons had 24 all-academic third-team student-athletes with GPAs ranking from 3.60 to 3.79.
Sixteen student-athletes from the pool of 73 earned honors in multiple sports.
Baseball had the most individual athletes earn all-academic honors with 17. Women&apos;s Track and Field had 12, while softball and women&apos;s soccer had 11 each. The Blue Dragon women&apos;s soccer team had the most first-team honorees with seven players earning that honor.
Blue Dragon Softball had the highest of all team GPAs in 2023-24 with an aggregate 3.67 team GPA.
Eight Blue Dragons teams earned NJCAA team academic honors. To earn team GPA awards, a team must have an aggregate 3.00 GPA to qualify.
Blue Dragon teams earning academic honors are: Softball (3.67), women&apos;s Soccer (3.52), women&apos;s cross country (3.35), baseball (3.19), women&apos;s outdoor track and field (3.16), women&apos;s basketball (3.13), women&apos;s indoor track and field (3.10) and men&apos;s cross country (3.09).

TROON, Scotland — Former Hutchinson Community College golfer Dominic Clemons carded a 6-over 77 opening round at The Open Championship on Thursday at the Royal Troon Golf Club.

Clemons and the other golfers battled heavy rain and strong winds throughout the round. The average score was 3-over par for the field.

The 22-year-old amateur is currently tied for 128th among the field. He finished his round with two birdies, one on the Par 4 seventh and another on the Par 4 13th. Clemons carded a 4-over on the front nine and a 2-over on the back.

Clemons is the first-ever former HutchCC golfer to ever qualify for a PGA major championship.

The trio of Clemons, Stewart Cink and Chris Kirk will tee off at 1:48 p.m. BST (7:48 a.m. CST) on Friday in Round 2.

STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College Athletics announces its 2024 Hall of Fame Recipients. This year’s class includes two student-athletes, one coach, and one KCAC Championship team. Sterling College’s fifteenth Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on September 28th, 2024. The induction ceremony will be held at halftime of the homecoming football game against Southwestern College at Smisor Stadium. There will be a reception before the game in the Gleason Center. More specific information can be found on the SC Warriors website as the Hall of Fame weekend approaches.

Lonnie Paramore ’92 (Basketball), Jaymi (McAnally) Westrup ’07 (Women’s Soccer), Mary Ver Steeg (Volleyball Coach, 1989-2005), and the 2013 KCAC Champion Football Team make up the 2024 Hall of Fame class.

Lonnie Paramore had an illustrious career for the Warriors in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Paramore was a three-year letter winner, two-time All-KCAC award winner, and two-time NAIA All-District winner. He was a two-time SC Outstanding Basketball Player, 1990-91 Outstanding Senior Athlete, and ’90-91 KCAC Co-Player of the Year. When he stepped off the floor his final season, he was second-highest in points scored in a single game (44), had the second-highest scoring average (23.6 ppg), second-highest in points scored in a season, held the highest number of 3-point field goals made in a season (63), maintained the highest career shooting percentage (49.6%), had the highest career Free Throws made percentage (81.2%) and was fifth in total career points.

Jaymi (McAnally) Westrup impressed many in her three and a half years as a Lady Warrior soccer player. She was a four-year letter winner for SC, a six-time KCAC Player of the Week, and two-time NAIA All-Region Player of the Week. In her freshman season, she earned Honorable Mention All-KCAC with 7 goals and 10 assists before an injury cut her season short after just nine games. In her sophomore campaign, she earned Second Team NSCAA Adidas All-American, All-KCAC First Team, tied for second in the KCAC in goals scored (16), and finished with nine assists. As a Junior, she was on the All-KCAC First Team, NAIA All-Region, and Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, and the team reached the NAIA Region IV tournament for the first time in program history. She scored 12 goals and had 7 assists. In her final season as a Warrior, Westrup was All-KCAC First Team, Second-Team All-Region, and scored 5 goals and had 5 assists. She was a three-year captain as well. In her career, she tallied 41 goals and 30 assists. Jaymi is still second in scoring and the all-time assist leader in Sterling College history. With Westrup on the team, Sterling went 45-31-2 overall and 25-11 in KCAC play.

Mary Ver Steeg, or “Coach Mary” as she is now endearingly referred to, impacted the lives of many athletes in her sixteen years at the helm of the Lady Warrior Volleyball program. She is the all-time winningest volleyball coach with 255 career wins for the Warriors. Coach Mary joined the Sterling College Hall of Fame as the first-ever KCAC Championship team coach in 1993. She repeated the feat in 1997, and took the KCAC crown for the second time. The ’97 team had an overall record of 29-10 and went undefeated in the KCAC with a perfect 18-0 conference record. That team also played in the NAIA Great Plains Regional Tournament. Ver Steeg’s teams also succeeded in the classroom, 8 earning AVCA Academic Team status. Since retiring from coaching at the collegiate level, Coach Mary has continued at SC as a professor, continuing to influence young people in an athletic setting, and still coaches high school volleyball at Hutchinson Central Christian High School in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The 2013 football team was undoubtedly one of the best teams in program history. It was the first team to win a KCAC Championship with a 9-3 overall record, 8-1 in KCAC play. They qualified for the NAIA Football Championship Series for the first time in school history and played Baker University. They were ranked #14 in the final NAIA poll. Head Coach Andy Lambert was named KCAC Coach of the Year, and Assistant Coaches Brett Clow and Chase Hansen were named Co-Assistant Coaches of the Year. This team had one of the top offenses in the nation. It ranked 10th nationally in passing efficiency (145.3), 12th in total rushing offense (2619 yards), 12th in total scoring offense (422 points), 14th in rushing offense per game (218.3 y/gm), and 14th in scoring offense per game (35.2 pts/gm).

Antonio Bray was ranked 1st in all-purpose yards (2352), 1st in kickoff return yards per attempt (35.7), 3rd in all-purpose yards per game (196), 4th in Division I in total kick-off return yards (820), 5th in total points scored from touchdowns (120), 6th in total points scored (120), 9th in points scored from touchdowns per Game (10), 10th in points scored per game (10), and 17th in punt return yards per attempt (11.5).

Mar E Whitson ranked 12th in fumbles forced per game (0.3). Reggie Langford ranked 14th in total offense (2665) and 16th in pass efficiency (141.1). Eddie Juarez ranked 16th in total scoring (Kicking) (71). Cedrique Smith ranked 20th in interceptions per game (0.4).

Paramore, Ver Steeg to enter Sterling Athletic HOF

Wanda (Estabrooks) Lehr Tipton, born July 12, 1934, in Hutchinson, KS died July 16, 2024 at home in Valley Center, Kansas surrounded by her 4 children. &nbsp;She is survived by her son, Don Lehr (Tricia), Wichita KS, son Bill Lehr (Su), Valley Center, KS, daughter KayLene Haug (Dewey), Valley Center, KS, and daughter Patty Walton (Jack), Sterling, KS; 8 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Elms, Broomfield CO; and former husband Jerry Tipton. She was preceded in death by her parents J.W. and Katie Estabrooks, sister Alice Stoughton; and first husband Gary Lehr.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School class of 1952 and attended Salt City Business College. Her career as an accomplished bookkeeper spanned more than 60 years, beginning at a small family-owned business, Lehr’s Packing Company in Hutchinson, then Gibson’s Discount Center Hutchinson and Newton. &nbsp;The remainder of her career was spent at BG Products of Wichita where she was proud to be the 2nd staffer hired when BG was just getting started and remained a part of BG’s success as a growing international company until she retired. &nbsp;Throughout her life she was happiest being with and cooking for family, friends and coworkers. &nbsp;Following her retirement, she pursued her joys of cooking, gardening, playing bingo and sharing her love for antiques and collectibles with her friends at Metcalf Sisters Antique Store in Newton, KS.

The family is planning a celebration of life open house later this year. In lieu of flowers Wanda would be honored with donations to the KS Food Bank or your local food bank to help feed the hungry. &nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Block by Block Investment Program, an initiative funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and managed by the Housing Commission in partnership with Hutch Rec, is proud to announce the successful completion of its 2024 grant cycle. This innovative program, part of Hutch Rec’s Healthy Neighborhood Initiative, has seen remarkable engagement and investment from homeowners, significantly enhancing the curb appeal and fostering a strong sense of community across Hutchinson’s neighborhoods.​

Community and Homeowner Investment​

The Block by Block program has been a resounding success, supporting 14 home improvement projects with grants totaling over $19,000. These grants were used to reimburse homeowners for 50% of their project costs, up to $1,500 per household. The program, which encouraged clusters of neighbors in designated areas to collaborate on exterior home improvement projects, has demonstrated a tremendous impact. With this influx of funds, homeowners have invested more than $60,000 in their own projects, ranging from updating porches and replacing front doors to installing new exterior windows and adding flowerbeds.​

The financial investment by the homeowners showcases their commitment to not only improving their own properties but also to enhancing the overall appearance and value of their neighborhoods. This collaborative approach has resulted in visible transformations across the community, making Hutchinson's neighborhoods more attractive and vibrant.​

"Residents have been really excited about this program because we intentionally made it a low-barrier program," said Denice Gilliland, Neighborhood Development Manager at Hutch Rec. "The goal is to bring residents together to help them build connections with each other, but also to inspire pride in where they live."​

Building Neighborhood Connections​

Beyond physical improvements, the Block by Block program has been instrumental in bringing neighbors together. By requiring at least five connecting properties to participate jointly, the initiative has fostered teamwork and strengthened relationships within the community. This collective effort has not only beautified neighborhoods but also built a sense of camaraderie among residents.​

The success stories from this cycle highlight how neighbors, who may have only been acquaintances before, have come together to plan and execute their projects. This interaction has laid the foundation for stronger, more supportive communities where residents feel more connected and invested in their surroundings.​

"To see programs come through that are backed by the city, backed by the county, it really is encouraging to see that they believe in not only the history that is in Hutchinson but also the families that are keepers of that history and the families who live in these homes," said Michelle Stewart, a Block by Block participant.​

Given the overwhelming success and positive feedback, the Block by Block Investment Program is set to open applications again in 2025. City holding community meeting July 30

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Family Community Theatre is presenting Little Shop of Horrors July 18-21 at the Flag Theatre in Hutchinson.

"This takes place in around circa 1960 in New York, Skid Row," said Cliff Riggs, who is the voice of the puppets and helped design sets for the production. "It's down and out section, downtown-ish area in Mushnick's Flower Shop. It's a failing flower shop as bums, winos, just vagrants all over the place. You have Seymour, an orphan he took in off the street, and love interest Audrey that also works in the flower shop, and then it comes into the picture this pod, this plant, this unknowing species.Turns out it's a plant from outer space that has a liking to blood, but not just any blood, but to human blood, so the story just evolves from there."

You can still get tickets in advance at Absolutely Home at 15 East 14th and at the Bookends bookstore, or you can get them online at <a href="http://FamilyCommunityTheatre.org">FamilyCommunityTheatre.org</a>. The puppetry for the plants in the shop is very demanding.

"Pod 1 is the smallest of it," Riggs said. "Pod 2 is actually manipulated by Seymour, the actor who plays Seymour live on stage. Pods 3 and 4, the larger two, we have two puppeteers, one that handles Pod 1 and another one that handles Pod 3 and 4. Pod 3 and 4 is very, very physically taxing, so if you come see the show, you'll sit out there and just be blown away as I am every night from backstage watching these individuals manipulate these massive, massive puppets."

FCT actually rented the puppets from Southwestern College, as the school rents their Little Shop puppets out regularly.&nbsp;

Family Community Theatre presenting Little Shop of Horrors this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved all the various agreements and bids to accomplish putting turf on Hobart-Detter Field and Fields 2 and 3 at Fun Valley Sports Complex at their meeting on Tuesday.

The bid from Mammoth was for $2.26 million, including alternates. The cost share agreement with Hutchinson Community College was for half of the cost of Hobart Detter and Field 3 at $1,695,000, or $847,500&nbsp; and with USD 308 was for half of the cost of Field 2 at $500,000, or $250,000 assuming that there are no change orders to add to the original bid. If change orders happen, agreements with the college and the school district will need to be adjusted accordingly.

The turf process will resolve the drainage issues at Hobart-Detter, which should allow for baseball to be played there in minutes after rainfall ends, rather than days.

The schools are allowed to pay their cost share agreements over a ten-year period.

The project will be bonded together with other city projects later this year.&nbsp;

Turf deal is done

TROON, Scotland — Former Hutchinson Community College All-American golfer Dominic Clemons will make his major championship debut on Thursday in The Open Championship.

Clemons is scheduled to tee off at 8:47 a.m. BST (2:47 a.m. CST) on Thursday morning at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland.&nbsp;

The 22-year-old Clemons is in the same grouping as Stewart Cink and Chris Kirk. Cink is a veteran of the PGA Tour, turning pro in 1995. He has played in The Open Championship 24 times in his career, finishing as high as sixth in 2007. Kirk joined the PGA Tour in 2011 and has appeared in The Open Championship five times, finishing as high as 19th in 2014.

The trio of Clemons, Cink and Kirk will tee off at 1:48 p.m. BST (7:48 a.m. CST) on Friday in Round 2.

⛳ Former Blue Dragon Clemons tee time set for The Open Championship Thursday

Former Hutchinson Community College All-American baseball player Ben McLaughlin became the 41st Blue Dragon selected in the MLB Draft on Monday.

McLaughlin was chosen in the ninth round with the 284th overall selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Day 2 of the three-day draft in Dallas. McLaughlin is the ninth Blue Dragon to be selected within in the Top 10 rounds.

The former Blue Dragon from Golden, Colorado, is the first Dragon drafted since Dylan Nedved in 2022 by the San Diego Padres. He is the second player selected by the Diamondbacks in Hutchinson history. Quarterback Club Hall of Famer Tim Olson was drafted by Arizona in the seventh round in 2000.

Playing for the Blue Dragons in 2021 and 2022, McLaughlin was the first Blue Dragon to be named Region VI Defensive Player of the Year. He was a first-team All-Jayhawk Conference Western Division and first-team All-Region VI selection as well in 2022.

The infielder started the 2022 season at first base and then moved to third base on March 24. He committed no errors at third base over the final 32 games of the regular season and had just two errors at the hot corner all season long. McLaughlin fielded .986 this season with only three errors in 222 fielding chances this season.

McLaughlin was the Blue Dragons' undisputed offensive leader in 2022, hitting .411 (88 of 214) with 19 home runs and 83 RBIs. He also had 23 doubles and posted a .511 on-base percentage with team highs of 34 walks and 13 hit-by-pitches.

McLaughlin ranked third in RBIs, tied for fourth in home runs, fourth in hits, tied for second in doubles and is tied for ninth in runs score in Blue Dragon single-season history.

In 2022 conference games, McLaughlin hit .431 with 10 home runs, 13 doubles, 50 total hits and 39 RBIs with 23 walks. He fielded .991 in 32 KJCCC games this season.

McLaughlin had a 16-game and 13-game hitting streak this season. He had 29 multi-hit games (17 two-hit games and 12 three-hit games) and 23 multi-RBI games this season.

McLaughlin was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week on May 11, 2022, going 11 for 16 with three doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs in a four-game series against Dodge City.

McLaughlin tied for seventh in the NJCAA in RBIs and was eighth in the nation in total bases with 172. His 19 home runs tied for 15th in the NJCAA. McLaughlin was sixth in the Jayhawk Conference with a .411 batting average and was fifth in slugging percentage at .804.

McLaughlin had 29 multi-hit games, including 12 three-hit games. He had 23 multi-RBI games with a season-high five RBIs against Dodge City on May 6. McLaughlin owns the Blue Dragon single-game RBI record with nine against Pratt on April 3, 2021.

As a freshman, McLaughlin hit .366 in 48 games with 60 total hits, 13 doubles, 13 home runs and 58 RBIs.

In 108 games as a Blue Dragon, McLaughlin hit .392 with 148 total hits (8th most in team history). He also ranks second in RBIs (141), second in home runs (32), fifth in doubles (36) and eighth in runs scored (122).

After Hutchinson, McLaughlin went to Arkansas and played for two seasons. McLaughlin hit .302 in his senior season and was named to the Fayetteville Regional all-tournament team. McLaughlin socked nine home runs and drove in 42 runs. As a junior, McLaughlin hit .346 with two homers and 14 RBIs.

Stuart Jay Reynolds, 71, died June 24, 2024, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;He was born August 13, 1952, in Hutchinson, to Harold Newlin and Lois A. (Brickey) Reynolds.

Stuart graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended Hutchinson Community College. &nbsp;He attended the Climate Control Institute in Wichita and received a certificate for Air Conditioning-Heating-Refrigeration Mechanic. &nbsp;Stuart passed the Block &amp; Associates six hour standard examination for Mechanical Journeyman on May 18, 1996. &nbsp;He was a self-employed landlord. &nbsp;Stuart enjoyed acting in plays during high school and at HCC. &nbsp;He enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, cooking, and baking. &nbsp;In addition, Stuart collected motorcycles, was a history buff, and enjoyed westerns, action, and military movies.

On July 28, 1990, he married Annie Elizabeth Besthorn, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Stuart is survived by: &nbsp;wife, Annie Reynolds of Hutchinson; daughter, Michelle Reynolds-Estdale (Peter) of Newbury, England; son, Jason Reynolds of Hutchinson; sisters, Sheila Reynolds (Lowell Paul) of Lawrence and Diane Steadman (Larry) of Hutchinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rozlyn Reynolds.

Cheryl Ann Smyres, 83, of Windom, KS, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Cozy Cottage Senior Living in Wichita.&nbsp;

She was born on May 9, 1941, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Arvid Carl and Laberta “Becky” (Knackstedt) Lindquist. She graduated from Windom High School and later from Brown Mackie Business College.&nbsp;

On May 27, 1962, Cheryl was united in marriage to Michael G. Smyres at the Andover Lutheran Church, and they started their life together; making their dreams of raising children and having a farm become a reality.&nbsp; Mike&nbsp; and Cheryl were married 52 years prior to Mike’s passing on February 12, 2015.&nbsp;

Along with being a farmer’s wife, Cheryl worked as a secretary for State Farm Insurance and was also a secretary and janitor at Windom Middle School. The Smyres family attended Andover Lutheran Church, Windom.

Survivors include two children, Shelley (Thomas) Caldarera of Andover, KS and Troy (Kristy) Smyres of Windom, KS; a brother, Arlyn Lindquist (Glenda) of Windom, KS; four grandchildren, Natalie Schekall, David Schekall (Abby), Trevor Smyres (Katherine), and Emily Engelman (Ben); three great-grandchildren, Josephine, Annalyn, and Jett; a nephew, Tyler Lindquist (Nathan Nixion); and a niece, Annette Holland and her daughters, Lauren and Maddie. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 27, at Andover Lutheran Church, 117 Dakota Rd., Windom, KS 67491, with Pastor Brenda Hogan officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Andover Cemetery.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until service time at the church on Saturday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College football team has garnered recognition among the national media, as the Blue Dragons are the No. 1 team in the JCGridiron Preseason Dirty 30 Rankings.

JCGridiron is a Rivals site affiliated with Yahoo Sports. The JCGridiron portion of the site is the leader in junior college football recruiting news.

Brad Hoiseth, the owner and publisher of JCGridiron has been promoting junior college football and ranking teams in his Dirty 30 Rankings for the past 20 years.

The preseason rankings are often questioned, according to Hoiseth.

"During the spring, JCGridiron solicits the coaches in an attempt to locate the top talent for the Rivals database," Hoiseth said. "If coaches do not respond, they are likely not to get as high of a ranking as they would expect. The bottom line is, if we don’t know what you have it’s hard for us to give you a high ranking. Fortunately, most of the power programs do respond because they understand the importance of promoting their players and getting them in the database."

Hoiseth had this to say about the Blue Dragons: "The bullseye to start the season is on Hutchinson, who seems to have all the necessary pieces to make another run at a title. The Blue Dragons last won a title during the COVID-19 season (20-21) and have been knocking on the door for a second title ever since. Head coach Drew Dallas is 38-4 since taking over the reigns and was in a great spot to win the title last season before falling in a tight battle to East Mississippi in the NJCAA semifinals. They should be the favorites for a third straight Jayhawk Conference title. Hutch should be very good on both sides of the ball, but particularly gritty on defense."

Betty Ruth McConnell, 83, of Hutchinson, died July 12, 2024, at Hospice House surrounded by her family. She was born May 7, 1941, in Hutchinson, to Chester L. and Easter L. (Kelman) Ravens.

Betty graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1960 and attended Hutchinson Community College and completed her education at Salt City Business College. Betty began working at an early age at Shurtz Produce. Then she went to work at Sears as a Department Manager for 17 years. Betty then went to work for Davis Home Center / Star Lumber &amp; Supply until she retired in 2006. After retirement, she went to Delos V. Smith Senior Citizens Center, where she taught her passion of quilting. She loved camping and crafting of all kinds – toll painting, ceramics, sewing, and especially quilting. Betty made many quilts for her family and friends. Her favorite sport was auto racing, from the local dirt track where family and friends raced, to traveling to her grandson kart racing and to even going to NASCAR races. She always sat in row 21 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Betty enjoyed going to any event where her grandchildren were involved as they were what she cherished the most. Betty was a member of Sunflower Ramblers RV Club and South Hutchinson United Methodist Church. She believed in working hard and loved taking trips, it did not matter where, often times to just get an ice cream sundae.&nbsp;

On April 22, 1961, Betty married Larry A. McConnell at South Hutchinson United Methodist Church. He survives.

Also surviving are: her children, Henton McConnell (Marsha) of Hutchinson, Shane McConnell of Buhler, Alicia Ochs (Danno) of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Brandy Yengbe (Prince) and their children Maya and Theodore, of Wichita, Aaron McConnell (Kristina) and their son Otto, of Andover, Daniel Ochs of Overland Park, Nathan Ochs of Hutchinson, and Dawson McConnell of Buhler.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Scott.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at South Hutchinson United Methodist Church, 206 E. Avenue E, South Hutchinson. Burial will take place at a later date.

Shannon was native to Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School. She received honors when graduating from Hutchinson Community College and the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American History. Shannon worked tirelessly and received her Juris Doctorate with Honors from Washburn School of Law, Topeka. She began her career in private practice, then worked for the Appellate Defender’s office in Topeka. Shannon moved back to Hutchinson in 1990, and worked for Kansas Legal Services for 19 years. In 2009, she opened Hutchinson Legal Clinic which is now Crane Law since 2014.&nbsp;

Shannon was a lover of all things KU and Chiefs football. She loved all her animals, especially her dogs. Shannon had great interest in genealogy and a passion for people. She was community minded and enjoyed volunteering at places such as the Reno County Food Bank and United Way.&nbsp;

Shannon is survived by: son, Thad (Malia) Crane, Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren, Miller, Dylan, and Kendall Crane, all of Alpharetta, GA; brother, Kevin Crane, Wichita; sister, Stephanie Crane, Hutchinson; ex-wife, friend, and colleague, Barbara Scholes, Hutchinson (her children Brett Scholes, Hutchinson and Taylor Scholes, Overland Park); nieces, Anna Crane, Wichita and Mandy Smith, Lindsborg; and nephew, Brett Crane, Orlando, FL.&nbsp;

Myron was a cowboy and craftsman. He was a member of the Frederick Baptist Church, where he was baptized; and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Myron enjoyed horses, horseshoeing, and welding. 

Myron is survived by his seven children, Roger Biehler and wife Brandy of Ashland, KS, Troy Biehler and wife Catie of Hutchinson, KS, Melinda Brewton and husband Lucas of Concord, NC, Lyndsey Winter and husband Aaron of Wichita, KS, Alex Biehler and wife Amanda of Winston-Salem, NC, Josh Biehler and fiancé Liza Johnson of Wichita, KS, and Robert Biehler of Wichita, KS; brother, Merle Biehler of Great Bend, KS; sister, Kathy Drake and husband Dave of Great Bend, KS; ten grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gwen Rogers.Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with Pastor Curtis Fitzgerald officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Monday, July 15, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present. Burial will follow at the Frederick Cemetery, Frederick, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Reins of Hope in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.

Dennis W. Teter, 81, of Buhler, died July 7, 2024, at his home. He was born April 12, 1943, in Hutchinson, to Melvin “Mutt” and Norma (Schanbacher) Teter.&nbsp;

Dennis graduated from Buhler High School in 1961 and attended Hutchinson Community College, where he attained his associate degree. For his bachelor’s degree in business, Dennis attended the University of Kansas, where he graduated first in his class. He worked as a certified public accountant for over 40 years.&nbsp;

Dennis was a devoted fan of Jayhawk basketball and the Hutchinson Blue Dragons. He enjoyed attending the rodeo and watching stock car races. Wherever Dennis went, he always carried a book with him. While he particularly appreciated reading western stories, all books and genres were welcome to him. &nbsp;

On June 12, 1971, he married Sherry J. Beavers at Bethany Church of the Nazarene. They shared 51 years of marriage, before her death on February 9, 2023.&nbsp;

Dennis is survived by: daughter, Amy (Marshall) Jackson of Nickerson; son, Justin (Amy Speirs) Teter of Wichita; brother, Douglas (Vicki) Teter of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Elizabeth Teter, Jasmyne Armstrong, Kaylee Teter, Draven Armstrong; great-grandchild, Hazel Murray; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved grand-pup Apollo.&nbsp;
