Day one of the 2025 state boys wrestling championships are in the books. Below you will see the six Hutch Post Area student-athletes that will wrestle for state titles on Saturday, plus how all 43 wrestlers fared.&nbsp;

Class 6A is in Overland Park, 5A in Park City, 4A in Salina and 3-1A in Hays.&nbsp;

Day two will begin at 9 a.m. with consolation wrestle backs, consolation quarterfinals, consolation semifinals, third place matches, fifth place matches and then championship introductions before the final matches.

🤼‍♀️ Buhler's Macey Parks leads 6 area girls wrestlers in state title matches Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan, - We had a chance catch up with Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran to visit a bit about the farm bill.  He and U.S. Senator Roger Marshall are both on the Senate Ag Committee, thanks to Moran being able to get an exemption to be on the committee.  

When asked, Moran replied, “We've had two hearings in the last month, both related to input from producers from across the country, from National Farm organizations as well as commodity groups, all with the design of making sure they have we get the latest input into what should be included in a new Farm Bill.” 

When asked about the importance of the Farm Bill he replied, “A reason to be on the farm, on the ag committee this year is a farm bill needs to be done, and we want to have that input. And the committee is doing its work to set the stage to produce a farm bill for American agriculture this year. 

We visited about the importance of assistance from the Capitol.  He replied that congress disaster assistance for farmers across the country.  “In addition to that, Congress, at the end of the year passed and the President signed into law disaster assistance for farmers across the country, disasters related to both weather and certainly in Kansas, the disaster is drought as well as economic disaster”, said Moran.  

The prime concern for ag producers is rising costs and diminishing income.  He stressed that they have been in communication with the Secretary of Agriculture.  They want to make sure that the money gets into the pockets of farmers and ranchers.   

“Then that money is spent within the community. Are whether you're a farmer or rancher or not you live in most places in Kansas, your economic well-being is determined by whether or not, farmers and ranchers are having any success.” Moran said.  

The pressing issue is how long before the bill makes it to the chamber floor.   

Moran said, “And at least you know, based upon conversations with my colleagues on the committee, talking to leadership of the of the Senate, the expectation is to complete a farm bill before what we call our August recess, when Congress adjourns for the month of August. So we have about six months in order to get this complete” 

Consumers are getting hit at the check out line.  When asked about the price of food, inflation is still a problem.  “I mentioned it earlier in the cost for farmers, their input costs, feed, fertilizer, natural gas, diesel fuel, labor costs, interest rates, all mean that they're being squeezed, and Americans are feeling that” Moran said.   

He did add that the Secretary of Agriculture this week announced a new five-point plan on dealing with egg prices.  

“It involves a number of things, including research and inoculation and compensation for losses. We'll see how that actually gets rolled out.” He continued, “But the goal is to produce more poultry in the United States, more poultry that's disease free, and to allow for greater imports of eggs from places outside the United States where the bird flu is not prevalent.”

Moran talks farm bill, assistance to farmers 

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp; -&nbsp;U.S. Senator Jerry Moran was in Hutchinson on Friday morning to meet with city officials to get an update from their perspective of the gas explosion from last Saturday. &nbsp;He talked about what he learned from this trip. &nbsp;

“I was able to get away from Washington, DC, late last night, and came to Kansas. We certainly have been following the damage and destruction that's occurred as a result of a gas leak here in Hutchinson. “ said Moran. “And I wanted to hear from city officials if there was you know, what was transpiring.”&nbsp;

He’s concerned about making sure that this doesn’t happen again. &nbsp;He talked about the federal involvement in this investigation. &nbsp;

“The National Traffic Safety Board has been here investigating why a pipeline would rupture, and I had conversations with the chair of that board this morning by phone. And in addition to that, there are pipeline safety regulations in the Department of Commerce, in the Commerce Committee that I am a member of, so we're just trying to make sure that what needs to be done is taking place, and offer our help.&nbsp;

 Moran continued to say that he wants to know what Kansas Gas plans are in regards to safety. &nbsp;

“a takeaway for me is I think this community would like to know what Kansas gasses plans are in regard to making certain that the pipelines that currently are under the streets of the city are safe now and in the future.”&nbsp;

He said a second component moving forward that we need assurances from the utility that things are safe. &nbsp;

“A second component of that is a look into the future to have Kansas Gas reassure the citizens of Hutchinson, its public officials, that the that the safety that should be here is here, and that if there's things that need to be improved, or modifications or modernization needs to take place, that that's going to be taking taking place here, that we want to see that things are safe” said Moran. &nbsp;

Moran visits with city officials, gets update on gas explosion 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Reno County appraiser Michael Plank says annual change-of-value notices will soon arrive in mailboxes.

“They are supposed to be mailed out today, actually,” Plank said. “They probably won’t hit mailboxes until Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday—sometime early next week. These go out every year around the first of March. It’s a state requirement. All it does is notify you if your property’s value has changed, whether it has gone up or down, and what the new value is for 2025. You don’t have to do anything with it.”

Plank said every property owner in the county should receive a notice, though there is a slim chance some may not.

“If they haven’t received one by Monday, March 10, at the latest, give us a call or stop by the office to pick up a copy,” Plank said. “You do have the right to appeal that valuation, and you don’t want to lose that right. You have 30 days from today, but since that falls on a weekend, you have until March 31 to appeal.”

Several factors contribute to property assessments.

“It’s a complicated process, but we don’t mind explaining it,” Plank said. “Most of the reason your value would change is due to market forces. As appraisers, we’re not out to get anybody or raise values on purpose. We’re just reporting on the real estate market.”

Plank said the appraiser’s office evaluates sales over the past three years.

“We’re looking at three years of sales for residential property,” Plank said. “Since we report on what has already happened, that affects valuation. Even if nothing changes on your property, your valuation could go up if homes have continuously sold for more—and that’s what we’ve seen for the last 12 to 15 years.”

One key factor driving home prices higher is a shortage of available homes.

“We’re in a historic period of low inventory,” Plank said. “A balanced real estate market has four to six months of inventory. Right now, we’re at about two months. Despite higher interest rates, we still have high demand for housing. Low inventory plus high demand means more bidders for available properties, which drives up sales prices—and that eventually affects valuations.”

The Kansas State High School Activities Association state wrestling championships begin today at four sites across the state.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School Salthawk bowling teams competed at the class 5A regional on Thursday at The Alley.

Senior Jacob Bofink bowled 669 series to finish in fourth place and qualify for the state bowling championship. Bofink bowled a 279, 234 and 156 in his three games.

Fellow senior Tanner Cunningham bowled a 569 series to finish 24th individually, but unfortunately did not qualify for state. Cunningham bowled a 181, 190 and 198.

Newton freshman Remington Burke is a state qualifier with a ninth place finish, bowling 235-221-188 for a 644 series. Newton finished fourth place as a team.

Maize South boys won the regional with a 3476, while Salina South finished second with 3182 and Bishop Carroll finished third with 3174.&nbsp;Hutchinson finished ninth as a team.&nbsp;

On the girls side, it was freshman Alexis Jones with a 465 series to finish 20th and lead the Salthawks.&nbsp;

The Salthawks did not qualify any girls for state.

Bishop Carroll won the regional with a 2915 score, followed by Salina South with 2910 and Maize South in third with 2796.&nbsp;

The class 5A state championship will take place on Wednesday, March 5 at Bowlero Northrock in Wichita.&nbsp;

🏀 Hutch Post Area scoreboard for Thursday, Feb. 27

On Thursday afternoon, the City of Hutchinson held a briefing to bring people up to date on the situation on South Main Street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to public works director Cecil Weible the evacuation zone is down to an area between avenue d and avenue f and between Washington Street and Walnut Street.&nbsp; They are estimating that it will take approximately two weeks for completion.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

At the present time, five businesses are affected and Evergy says that they have twenty customers without electric service.&nbsp;

As of yesterday, the Hutchinson Fire Department was cleared from the scene and no longer has a presence at the scene.&nbsp; The fire department and&nbsp;Kansas Gas will meet business owners that have not been allowed into their buildings to be escorted by a firefighter and a KGS employee to get important documents that they may need.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

When asked, that policy was put in place by kgs and the fire department because there is still gas coming out of the ground.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KGS replaced 100-feet of gas line from the east to west under main street.&nbsp; The evacuation zone has been minimized to Main Street between Avenue D and to just north of Avenue F and from Walnut Street and Washington Street.&nbsp;

The city said that they will continue to provide updates as they become available.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

City provides fire briefing 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Shamrock N' Roll event, hosted by the Rise Up Reno Prevention Network, returns to the Cosmosphere on Friday, March 7, from 7 to 11 p.m.

The fundraiser supports Rise Up Reno Prevention Network and its various programs.

"We are starting to build a lot of our programs up, and obviously, that takes funding," program coordinator John Young said. "We want to reach more kids because we know that with social media and the pressures they face, life isn't getting any easier for them. The Shamrocker is our biggest fundraiser. It's a huge part of that. We revamped it last year with a casino theme inside the Cosmosphere. It was a great success, and it's for a great cause."

The event features a live auction, a silent auction, 12 casino tables, a photo booth, food, music, and more.

Rise Up Reno Prevention Network serves area communities in multiple ways.

"Our main goal is to help kids live a happy and healthy life," Orrison said. "We have a youth leadership program, school-based mentoring programs, and suicide prevention initiatives for the entire county."

Young elaborated on the school-based mentoring.

"We have programs in almost all Reno County schools," Young said. "We have a mentoring program where volunteers read with students in grade schools through our 'Read with Me' program. This provides children with valuable one-on-one time. We also have mentors in elementary, middle, and high schools who engage students in positive discussions, assist with schoolwork, and provide guidance. Our mentors help create a strong, positive influence in students' lives."

The program's foundation is to help youth stay away from alcohol and drugs.

"You may wonder why we focus on suicide prevention," Orrison said. "We know that having just one strong, trusted person to talk to can help prevent suicidal thoughts or ideation. That connection can make a life-changing difference."

Those interested in mentoring have several options.

"You can participate in one-on-one mentoring or the 'Read with Me' program, where you assist an entire classroom of students with reading and fluency," Orrison said. "It's a rewarding program where volunteers see students progress throughout the year. And it's only an hour a week. We don't ask for much, but most of our volunteers say they get more out of it than the kids."

Starting Thursday, Feb. 27, the Woodie Seat detour will be in place. Note that the city has changed the detour to include the Main Street closure because of the natrual gas explosion and fire from Saturday Feb. 22.

The city added that they are working hard to minimize disruption, and as soon as Avenue F and Main Street is open, they will reevaluate the detour and make any necessary changes.

&nbsp;Important Note: Truck traffic is allowed on Bigger Street during the detour.



ORIGINAL STORY: The Woodie Seat project is about to start up again. We had Hutchinson Public Works Director Cecil Weible in to talk about the activity that will be starting up again.

Weible said that the detours will be going up next week.  “The first phase of that is going to kick off on February 27 we going to start the road closures all the detours will go up and into place.” Weible continued “The actual work will begin on the following Monday.”  

Detours for the project will be Adams and Monroe northbound and southbound, and Second Avenue and Avenue F.   

Phase II consists of the removal of the bridges at Avenue A and Avenue B, to bring the roadway down to “ground” level and the installation of the Roundabout on Avenue A.   

With all the demolition, there will be additional truck traffic on the south end of Hutchinson.  The city has designated a truck route for the removal of the dirt from the project.  That route will be Avenue F to Plum Street then south on Plum Street to Avenue G out to Severance.   

There is a spot there that the state owns where they will put the dirt for a project the state has coming up.  

The timeline for completion of the project is January 2026. However, the contractor thinks that they may be able to complete it sooner.  

Once the construction of the roundabout is complete, the parks department will top off the project with signage and plants in the roundabout.  

We asked why a roundabout vs a traffic signaled intersection; it is all in the numbers according to Weible.  The data shows that roundabouts are safer.  It virtually eliminates T-collisions. Also, they are cheaper to maintain. Weible said that traffic systems are expensive whereas roundabouts are very low maintenance.  It makes sense to install them.

 </figure>With all the demolition, there will be additional truck traffic on the south end of Hutchinson. The city has designated a truck route for the removal of the dirt from the project. That route will be Avenue F to Plum Street then south on Plum Street to Avenue G out to Severance. There is a spot there that the state owns where they will put the dirt for a project the state has coming up. The timeline for completion of the project is January 2026. However, the contractor thinks that they may be able to complete it sooner. Once the construction of the roundabout is complete, the parks department will top off the project with signage and plants in the roundabout. We asked why a roundabout vs a traffic signaled intersection; it is all in the numbers according to Weible. The data shows that roundabouts are safer. It virtually eliminates T-collisions. Also, they are cheaper to maintain. Weible said that traffic systems are expensive whereas roundabouts are very low maintenance. It makes sense to install them. Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 800 block of North Main on the east side.

In 1950, the Safeway grocery store company decided to build another store in Hutchinson. A roundtop with brick walls was constructed at 820 N. Main, just north of First Baptist Church.

The grand opening was in March of 1951. The first photo shows the busy store in 1957.

The second photo shows that store in the background during a parade showing off some of Wade Patton's antique automobiles.

This Safeway was active between 1951 to 1962.

In 1964, Banker's Investment Co. remodeled the space and had multiple office spaces within the building.

In 1978, the Security Pacific Finance Co. took over ownership, but was only there until 1985.

In 1987, the building was expanded and the Quest Center was born. This became an incubator for small businesses and the address was changed to 1 E. 9th. The third photo shows this enterprise about 1990.

In September 2013, HutchCC dedicated the Bob &amp; Lou Peel Allied Health Center into this location. The fourth photo shows the 1 E. 9th property today, still owned by HutchCC, that includes StartUp Hutch, which still includes the original 820 N. Main building.

The Reno County Appraiser, Michael Plank is hosting an event on Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Coffee with the County Appraiser will be held on Thursday Feb. 27 in the Reno County Annex Conference Room from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

This is an opportunity for the community to learn about the appraisal process.&nbsp;

Plank will go over the appraisal process and then hold a general question and answer session.&nbsp; He will not go over specific personal property questions. Those questions can be answered in the Appraiser's Office which is also in the Annex Building.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The event will be livestreamed on the county's YouTube channel as well.&nbsp;

Plank will be on the BW morning show on Friday morning at 7:15 a.m.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Bo Aldridge scored 25 points and brought down 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, as the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team beat Pratt, 65-59.

The Blue Dragons are now 18-10 overall, 14-8 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson maintains its fourth place position in the standings with two games to play.

Hutchinson and Pratt (11-17, 7-15) each struggled to shoot the basketball throughout the night. Hutchinson shot 27% from the floor, while Pratt was 35%. Pratt struggled from behind the arc, knocking down just 2 for 23 from deep, while the Blue Dragons hit eight 3-pointers.&nbsp;

The game featured nine ties and seven lead changes, as the largest lead in the game was six points, which came by Hutch in the first half. The largest lead for Pratt was four early in the game.&nbsp;

Ajiet Akot scored 21 poitns and brought down 15 rebounds to lead Pratt with his fifth double-double of the season.&nbsp;

HutchCC will travel to Liberal on Saturday to face the Seward County Saints with tipoff at 4 p.m. from the Greenhouse. You can hear the game on KHUT-FM (102.9) and KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with pregame starting at 3:45 p.m. with Sean Boston and Daren Dunn.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Landon Forbes scored 18 points and had nine steals, as the No. 11 Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team cruised to an 85-44 win over Pratt on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons are now 25-3 overall, 19-3 in Jayhawk Conference play with two games left in the regular season.

HutchCC jumped out to a 9-0 run, before Pratt knocked down three straight 3-pointers to tie the game at nine. The Blue Dragons led 21-14 after the first quarter.

Hutchinson continued to build its lead as the game progressed, outscoring Pratt 23-9 in the second quarter and 24-10 in the third quarter.&nbsp;

Hailey Jackson, Jada Pleasant and Forbes each hit two 3-pointers a piece, part of 10 made 3-pointers by the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

Hutchinson out-rebounded Pratt, 43-31, including 23 offensive boards. The Blue Dragons converted those to 17 second chance points.

The Blue Dragons finished with 12 turnovers, while the Beavers had 29. The 29 turnovers led to 42 Hutch points, while Pratt didn't score off of HutchCC turnovers.

Pratt (8-20, 3-19) was led by La'Kyra Johnson, who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.&nbsp;

Pratt shot 29% from the floor, while Hutchinson shot 41%. Both teams were successful at the line, as Pratt knocked down 12 of 13 free throws, and Hutchinson 13 of 16.

Hutchinson will travel to Liberal on Saturday to play Seward County in the Greenhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and can be heard on KHUT-FM (102.9) and KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with pregame at 1:45 p.m. with Sean Boston and Daren Dunn.

MAIZE, Kan. - Second year head coach Kalen Hilst said he feared a slow start for his Salthawk girls and that fear came true on this night versus the Maize Eagles. But Junior Kohlbie Craft was able to provide enough of a spark to give the Lady Salthawks a 43 to 34 win as the Salthawks earned the sweep on the season over the Eagles. 

In the boys contest, the Salthawks trailed by only three, 41-38 going into the final quarter, but Maize came up with big plays to pull away for a 58- 48 win in the end.

Kohlbie Craft to the rescue was the theme of the night it seemed, as the junior post player came up big by having her most productive night as a Salthawk by scoring 17 points to lead Hutchinson to a 43 to 34 victory over Maize.

Craft scored on a three point play just as the time ran out in the second quarter to score and be fouled. She converted the free throw and that gave Hutchinson a 19 to 15 lead at the half. Hutchinson trailed for much of the first half as the Eagles played just about the entire game in a triangle and two defense shutting down the Salthawk duo of Grace Posh and Kaia Smith most of the night. Posh ended with five points while Smith only earned two points and that was scored in the first half of play.

The Salthawks was unable to extend the half time lead as both teams scored 13 points each in the third. Craft took over in the low post to score 7 of her 17 points in the final quarter only missing one free throw on the night. Tenley Keeton came off the bench to drop nine on the Eagles while Charlotte Kerbs, Malaysia Ingram and Lexee Shipp each scored eight points to lead the Eagles.

Coach Hilst agreed that the triangle and two defense caused some problems and that the Salthawks were going to have to figure out how to break it as now other teams will probably use it against Hutch, going down the stretch. Maize made it work against the Salthawks at least on this night of basketball.

Brayden Myovelia for Maize came alive in the fourth quarter to score eight of his 13 points to help lead the Eagles to a 58-48 victory and a season sweep of Hutchinson.

Trailing by only three points going into the fourth quarter, Hutch felt that the game was there for the taking, but a six point possession by the Eagles late off a Levi Kepler foul and a technical foul called on Taishaun Govain on the same play cost the Salthawks dearly as Myovelia hit six free throws in a row allowing the Eagles to build a double digit lead at a critical time in the game.

"We just lost focus and you can't have that happen in a game" coach Bryan Miller commented after the contest on his post game radio show.

Maize senior guard Alan Hanna added 15 points to lead the Eagles in scoring.

Taishaun Govain led three Salthawks with double digit scoring with 12 points scored. Kepler added 11 before fouling out late an Lamar Govain had 10 points. Terrell King played the entire game but was held to eight points total as the senior leader only was able to score one basket in the second half.

Hutchinson will travel to Andover on Thursday and then wrap up the regular season with a make-up game in Salina on Friday versus Salina South. The girls game will be a rematch of last years sub-state final that Andover used to send them to state.

In the boys contest, the Salthawks trailed by only three, 41-38 going into the final quarter, but Maize came up with big plays to pull away for a 58- 48 win in the end.Girls recap:Kohlbie Craft to the rescue was the theme of the night it seemed, as the junior post player came up big by having her most productive night as a Salthawk by scoring 17 points to lead Hutchinson to a 43 to 34 victory over Maize.Craft scored on a three point play just as the time ran out in the second quarter to score and be fouled. She converted the free throw and that gave Hutchinson a 19 to 15 lead at the half. Hutchinson trailed for much of the first half as the Eagles played just about the entire game in a triangle and two defense shutting down the Salthawk duo of Grace Posh and Kaia Smith most of the night. Posh ended with five points while Smith only earned two points and that was scored in the first half of play.The Salthawks was unable to extend the half time lead as both teams scored 13 points each in the third. Craft took over in the low post to score 7 of her 17 points in the final quarter only missing one free throw on the night. Tenley Keeton came off the bench to drop nine on the Eagles while Charlotte Kerbs, Malaysia Ingram and Lexee Shipp each scored eight points to lead the Eagles.Coach Hilst agreed that the triangle and two defense caused some problems and that the Salthawks were going to have to figure out how to break it as now other teams will probably use it against Hutch, going down the stretch. Maize made it work against the Salthawks at least on this night of basketball.Boys recap:Brayden Myovelia for Maize came alive in the fourth quarter to score eight of his 13 points to help lead the Eagles to a 58-48 victory and a season sweep of Hutchinson.Trailing by only three points going into the fourth quarter, Hutch felt that the game was there for the taking, but a six point possession by the Eagles late off a Levi Kepler foul and a technical foul called on Taishaun Govain on the same play cost the Salthawks dearly as Myovelia hit six free throws in a row allowing the Eagles to build a double digit lead at a critical time in the game."We just lost focus and you can't have that happen in a game" coach Bryan Miller commented after the contest on his post game radio show.Maize senior guard Alan Hanna added 15 points to lead the Eagles in scoring.Taishaun Govain led three Salthawks with double digit scoring with 12 points scored. Kepler added 11 before fouling out late an Lamar Govain had 10 points. Terrell King played the entire game but was held to eight points total as the senior leader only was able to score one basket in the second half.Hutchinson will travel to Andover on Thursday and then wrap up the regular season with a make-up game in Salina on Friday versus Salina South. The girls game will be a rematch of last years sub-state final that Andover used to send them to state.

🏀 Salthawks come up short in Maize; Eagles earn split by pulling away late

KSHSAA regional bowling tournaments will be held across the state over the next few days, with three sites in class 6A, three in class 5A and four in class 4-1A.

There will be a total of 144 bowlers (72 in girls; 72 in boys) that will qualify for state competition in class 6A, class 5A and class 4-1A.

In 6A and 5A, the top three teams at each regional will qualify for the state tournament. In 4-1A, the top two teams at regionals will qualify for state.
