HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A retired law enforcement officer with decades of public service has entered the race for an open seat on the Hutchinson City Council.

Darrin Truan, who spent 24 of his 33 years in law enforcement with the Hutchinson Police Department, announced Monday he is seeking the at-large position in this year’s city election. Truan retired at the rank of sergeant and now owns and manages local rental properties. He also has a background in the trades, with experience in home repairs, building costs and rental management.

In a news release, Truan said his time in law enforcement brought him face-to-face with many of the city’s ongoing challenges and motivated his run for office.

“I want to help move the city forward with common-sense solutions and a close eye on spending,” Truan said. “Conservative, reasonable taxes, coupled with a progressive response to citizen concerns, is my government goal.”

Truan said he plans to attend upcoming council meetings to better understand current issues and is encouraging residents to share their concerns directly with him by phone at (620) 728-9444.

The at-large seat is currently held by Mayor Stacy Goss, who is running for the Northwest District seat. That position is being vacated by Jon Richardson, who announced he will not seek a second term. The Southwest District seat is also up for election this year, with incumbent Greg Fast filing for re-election.

Truan lives in Hutchinson with his wife, Tiffany, who works at a local bank. The couple has two children who also reside in the city.

Veteran law enforcement officer files for Hutchinson City Council 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center has named Emily Kohls as its new executive director, bringing on a familiar face with deep ties to the local arts community.&nbsp;

Kohls, who has been involved with the Art Center for several years, officially stepped into the role earlier this spring. She previously served as the center’s part-time media manager and has volunteered regularly at receptions and gallery installations. Her promotion was the result of a competitive search process that drew numerous applicants.&nbsp;

“There was a selection committee, and we got quite a few résumés,” said Barbara Withrow President of the Board of Directors for the Art Center. “We narrowed it down and interviewed four candidates, but Emily stood out. Her qualifications and experience were just outstanding. We knew she could jump right in.”&nbsp;

Originally from the area, Kohls has called Hutchinson home for nearly two decades. Her passion for the arts began early and was nurtured during her time at Buhler High School, where she studied under longtime art teacher Cheryl Smith. She went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree from Hutchinson Community College, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Fort Hays State University in 2020. She also earned certificates in art history and arts entrepreneurship.&nbsp;

Kohls deepened her academic foundation with a master’s degree in art history, completed in December 2023.&nbsp;

“I took way more art history classes than I needed because I just loved it,” Kohls said. “Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.”&nbsp;

In addition to her roles at the Art Center, Kohls has served on the Hutchinson Public Art and Design Council and worked as a substitute teacher, gaining experience she says will help her support the center’s educational initiatives.&nbsp;

“Art really isn’t taught in schools as much anymore,” Withrow said. “Emily’s teaching background will be a real asset as we try to engage more children in the arts.”&nbsp;

When the executive director position opened, Kohls said she hesitated before applying but was encouraged by colleagues and mentors to pursue the opportunity.&nbsp;

“I did have to think about it for a second,” Kohls said. “But I’m glad I went for it.”&nbsp;

The board was equally enthusiastic. “We checked her references, and they were absolutely outstanding,” Withrow said. “People praised her work ethic, her creativity, and her dedication to the arts.”&nbsp;

SALINA, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School baseball team split with the Salina Central Mustangs on Tuesday evening at Dean Evans Stadium. The Salthawks won the first game in run-rule fashion, before dropping the nightcap in 10 innings.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (10-9) will host Andale/Garden Plain and Haven on Friday at Hobart-Detter Field for a triangular. Salina Central (10-8) will travel to Newton on Friday.

Game 1 — Hutchinson 14, Salina Central 4 (6 Innings)

Caiden Beavers recorded his fifth three-hit game of the season to lead Hutchinson to a 14-4 win over Salina Central in six innings.

Beavers went 3-for-5 with three singles, two RBIs and three stolen bases, helping the Salthawks improve to 5-1 against left-handed starters and 3-2 in games without a defensive error. His two-run single in the first keyed a six-run opening frame, with Cole Bleything and Landon Parks also driving in runs.

Beavers added another RBI single in the third as Hutchinson pushed the lead to 9-3.

JuJu Lyons made the start and allowed one hit and three runs over two innings despite six walks. Bleything earned the win on the mound, going four innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and not allowing a hit.&nbsp;

The Salthawks totaled 10 hits and 10 walks. Parks and Carter Morgan each had multi-hit games, while Jack Davis walked three times. Hutchinson stole six bases.

Salina Central was led by Maximus Maes with two RBIs. Parker Graves and Bodie Rodriquez each had a hit, and the Mustangs drew six walks but couldn't overcome five defensive errors.

Game 2 — Salina Central 5, Hutchinson 4 (10 Innings)

A back-and-forth battle ended in heartbreak for Hutchinson, as Salina Central walked it off in the tenth for a 5-4 win Tuesday evening.

Hutchinson took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth after Cole Bleything delivered an RBI single to left and a defensive miscue allowed a second run to score. Salina Central answered in the bottom half, tying the game on a sacrifice fly by Maximus Maes and a bases-loaded walk to Seth Rogers.

The Salthawks regained the lead in the ninth when Carter Morgan singled home a run and an error added another, giving Hutchinson a 4-2 advantage. But the Mustangs responded again in their final at-bat. Parker Graves ripped a game-tying, two-run double down the right field line before later scoring the winning run.

Graves also picked up the win on the mound, tossing three innings of relief with two strikeouts and no walks. Starter Seth Rogers went seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) while fanning four.

Landon Parks took the loss for Hutchinson after allowing one run in two-thirds of an inning. Starter Gabe Valadez gave the Salthawks five and two-thirds solid innings, surrendering four hits and two runs with one strikeout.

Bleything and Caiden Beavers led Hutchinson’s offense with two hits apiece. Morgan, Bleything, and Valadez each drove in a run. Hutchinson turned one double play on defense.

⚾ Salthawks rout Mustangs in opener, fall in extras in Game 2

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A two-story brick home was destroyed early Tuesday morning in a fire along South K-14 Highway in Reno County, authorities said.

Reno County Fire Districts 8, 9 and Pretty Prairie Fire were dispatched at 12:58 a.m. to the 8800 block of South K-14, where the house was reported fully engulfed in flames. The response was quickly upgraded, with additional crews from Fire Districts 3, 4, 6 and the Hutchinson Fire Department called to assist.

Reno County EMS provided firefighter rehabilitation on scene. The Reno County Sheriff’s Office, South Hutchinson Police Department and the Kansas Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control, closing K-14 for several hours to allow for a water shuttle operation.

No injuries were reported. The home was a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office, South Hutchinson Police Department and the Kansas Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control, closing K-14 for several hours to allow for a water shuttle operation.No injuries were reported. The home was a total loss.The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Overnight fire destroys house south of Hutchinson 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two iconic bands from the 1960s will bring a wave of nostalgia to the Fox Theater next week, as The Association and The Cowsills take the stage for a special night of live music on Saturday, May 3.

Josh Davies, executive director of the Fox Theater, announced the upcoming show as part of the venue’s lively spring season, which also includes classic films, a summer kids’ series, and weekend movie events. But it’s the live music, Davies said, that truly brings the historic venue to life.

“This is going to be a nostalgic evening of the greatest music of the 1960s,” Davies said. “We’ve had a number of groups from that era, but these two haven’t performed here before. It just felt like the right time.”

The show pairs The Association, best known for timeless hits such as “Wendy,” “Cherish,” and “Never My Love,” with The Cowsills, the real-life family band that inspired the television series The Partridge Family. The Cowsills will open the evening, followed by a headlining performance from The Association.

Davies said the idea to book both groups came after discovering they shared the same agent. While not part of a prearranged tour, the pairing echoes popular throwback concert events like the “Happy Together Tour,” which regularly features acts from the 1960s and ’70s.

“There are still some original members performing with both bands,” Davies said. “It adds something really special for fans who grew up with their music.”

Tickets are already selling well, and season ticket holders can find their passes to the May 3 show included in their ticket packages.

“If you love music from the ’60s, this is the show for you,” Davies said.

Classic pop groups to perform Saturday at the Fox Theatre

The Hutchinson Monarchs' season is just around the corner. &nbsp;Earlier this year they stated that they still need host families for the upcoming season, and they need more families than last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Owner Marc Blackim explained how important the host families are to the program. &nbsp;“The host family portion of our program is the most important. If I don't have housing for these young men, then we just can't, we can't run the program.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Blackim says that they need even more families than they ever have had. &nbsp;He said that in past years we have had a bunch of young men from HutchCC and they were in an apartment, so that took care of three or four of them. &nbsp;This year, the players are dorm residents, so they need to find hosts for those players. &nbsp;

The Monarchs season runs from the end of May until the end of July. Players report on May 26th and the season begins on May 30th. &nbsp;&nbsp;

A host family is a family that is willing to open up their home to a young man, provide a roof over his head and a bed to sleep in. &nbsp;The family also provides some food for him, and the Monarchs take care of some of the food as well. They also provide a place so that the player has a place to do their laundry. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Blackim expects the players to become part of the family. &nbsp;The host family sets the rules, and the players become involved with the family. &nbsp;He says that they expect the players to get involved with the kids, stuff they have going on in the summer and any other family events that mom and dad want them involved in. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Blackim tells us a about a relationship he has with two players from year two of the Monarchs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The second year we got involved with summer Collegiate Baseball, two of the young men that we hosted from California still come to our house for Thanksgiving time and and they're they still come for Thanksgiving” Blackim said. &nbsp;

Monarchs seek host homes for upcoming season 

UPDATE:&nbsp; Captain Dayton Gates of the Hutchinson Police Department tells us that they collected 121 pounds of unused prescriptions at the event on April 26.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, will host the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dillon’s Marketplace, 3200 Plaza East Drive.

The event offers residents a safe, free and anonymous way to dispose of unneeded prescription medications. Tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs will be accepted. Liquids, such as cough syrup, must be sealed in their original containers with caps tightly secured to prevent leaks. Syringes, sharps and illicit drugs will not be accepted.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has helped Americans safely discard more than 19.2 million pounds of medications since the program began over a decade ago, preventing old or unused prescriptions from becoming a source of misuse or addiction.

City to hold public meeting over future of Memorial Hall on May 8 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a four-year hiatus, Fly Hutch, the Hutchinson Regional Airport’s fly-in and open house, returns May 3 with a full day of activities, aircraft displays and family-friendly fun.

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to the public, said Doug Bennett, a member of the airport’s advisory committee. Highlights include a wide variety of vintage and military aircraft, a classic car show, a pancake breakfast, food trucks, and Country 102.9 and My 93-1 will be there.

“We’re excited to bring Fly Hutch back,” Bennett said. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to get up close to historic planes and even take a flight.”

Aircraft scheduled to appear include a Douglas AC-47 "Spooky" gunship, a B-25 Mitchell bomber, and a P-51 Mustang Reno Air Racer. Several aircraft will offer rides for purchase, including a C-45 Expeditor and a UC-78 Bobcat.

Younger attendees can participate in free Young Eagle flights, offered for children ages 8 to 17 through the Experimental Aircraft Association. Registration will take place inside the hangar marked "Hutchinson."

Other activities include a weather balloon launch at 10:30 a.m. and two aerial firefighting water drop demonstrations by Tanker 95, a fire bomber based in Hutchinson. The drops are scheduled for late morning and early afternoon.

Food vendors will be on site, with six food trucks offering a variety of meals and snacks.

Bennett, a professional airline pilot who earned his private license at Hutchinson Regional Airport in 1996, said he hopes the event will inspire future aviators, especially as the aviation industry prepares for a wave of retirements starting in 2028.

"Flying has been a lifelong passion for me," he said. "We hope Fly Hutch shows young people what’s possible."

SALINA, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School baseball team bounced back after a one-run loss in Game 1 to pick up a doubleheader split against Salina South on Friday at Dean Evans Stadium.

The Salthawks are now 9-8 on the season, wile the Cougars are 12-6.

Game 1 — Salina South 4, Hutchinson 3

Hutchinson saw a late lead slip away, falling 4-3 to Salina South in Game 1 of the doubleheader.&nbsp;

The Salthawks tied the game at 3 in the fourth inning, but the Cougars pulled ahead for good in the fifth when a wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Hutchinson opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI double from Caiden Beavers. South responded in the bottom of the inning as Wyatt Breeden grounded out to score one run and Aidan Speilman added an RBI single to center.

Breeden pushed the Cougars’ lead to 3-1 in the third with another RBI groundout. Hutchinson answered in the fourth, tying the game on a South error and a sacrifice fly from Brodie McCuan.

South's Jace Humphrey picked up the win, allowing four hits and three runs — only one earned — over seven innings, striking out four and walking none. The earned run was the first allowed by Humphrey this season. Jack Davis took the loss for Hutchinson despite not allowing an earned run in six innings, striking out two.&nbsp;

Cole Bleything, McCuan, Carter Morgan and Beavers each tallied one hit for the Salthawks. McCuan and Beavers drove in one run apiece.

Breeden led South with two RBIs, while Landon Putman, Speilman, Landon Huffman and Yaden Montanez each had a hit. 

After a leadoff single by Bleything in the seventh, he was eliminated at second base on a game-ending double play.&nbsp;

Game 2 — Hutchinson 6, Salina South 3

Hutchinson High School earned a 6-3 win over South on Friday, fueled by strong pitching from Carter Morgan and timely offense.

The Salthawks opened the scoring in the first inning when Gabe Valadez lined out to drive in a run. South tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a single by Jace Humphrey, then took a 2-1 lead in the second following a passed ball.

Hutchinson reclaimed the lead in the third, capitalizing on a South error and a groundout by Valadez to go ahead 3-2.

Morgan earned the win for Hutchinson, allowing five hits and three runs — only one earned — over six innings while striking out seven and walking four. Cole Bleything recorded the save. South starter Aidan Speilman took the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) on four hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Jack Yoder led Hutchinson at the plate, going 2-for-3. Jack Davis, Caiden Beavers and Valadez each drove in a run. The Salthawks drew six walks, turned a double play and played error-free defense, with JuJu Lyons leading the way with eight chances in the field.

⚾ Hutch High bounces back for split at Salina South

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Riders from across Kansas will hit the road this Saturday for the fourth annual “Cruise for the Cure” poker run, a motorcycle (and road-legal vehicle) event organized to raise funds for the Cancer Council of Reno County. Hosted by Bretz Injury Law in partnership with Salty Cycles, the charity ride has grown into a community-fueled tradition drawing more than 100 participants in past years.

The event begins Saturday morning, April 26, at Salty Cycles, located at 129 E. Sherman in Hutchinson. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., with engines revving for the start at 10:30 a.m. Riders will embark on an 87-mile route that stretches into neighboring Harvey County, stopping at four checkpoints: Buhler Gas Company in Buhler, Lighthouse Coffee in Inman, Dan’s Cycle in Hesston, and the American Legion Post in Halstead, before returning to Bretz Injury Law for lunch, raffles and awards.

Entry fees are $25 for one poker hand or $50 for three. The poker element of the ride includes drawing cards at each stop, with a final skill game determining the last card. Prizes will be awarded for the best hand, second-best hand, and even the worst hand—a playful tradition that adds fun to the serious cause.

“This event was created to support a cause nearly everyone can relate to,” said Casey Ensz, an organizer with Bretz Injury Law. “Cancer affects almost every family, and the Cancer Council of Reno County does a tremendous job helping those who fall through the cracks of insurance and other support systems.”

Half of the entry fees go directly to the Cancer Council, which provides assistance with transportation, food and other expenses for local patients. Additional fundraising will include raffles with prizes donated by area businesses. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. A free lunch catered by Cancun Mexican Grill will be served to participants upon return.

And the event isn’t just for bikers. “If you’ve got a road-legal vehicle—even a Toyota Camry—you’re welcome to join us,” Ensz said. “It’s about raising money and awareness. The more, the merrier.”
