At 4:25 PM on May 9, the Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) was dispatched to the 100 block of West 9th Street for reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, fire crews found a garage fully engulfed in flames.

HFD Truck 1 quickly took action, deploying a hand line and aggressively attacking the fire. Firefighters worked swiftly to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby garages, ensuring the safety of the surrounding properties.

Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts of the HFD, the fire was brought under control in a short time. Crews remained on scene for approximately an hour to conduct a thorough investigation and extinguish any lingering hotspots.

No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School swept league-leading Maize in a doubleheader Friday evening at Hobart-Detter Field, winning both games by identical 3-1 scores behind complete-game efforts from pitchers Jack Davis and Carter Morgan.

With the sweep, the Salthawks improved to 15-10 on the season, while Maize dropped to 15-8.

Jack Davis tossed his second consecutive complete game and improved to 5-1 on the season, leading Hutchinson to a 3-1 win over Maize in a tightly contested AVCTL-I matchup at Hobart-Detter Field.

The right-hander worked around seven walks and scattered four hits over seven innings, allowing just one run while striking out two. Davis also flashed the leather, ending a fifth-inning threat with a pickoff move to catch a Maize baserunner leaning.

Hutchinson’s defense played a pivotal role behind him, turning a pair of key double plays and making a highlight-reel stop in the top of the first. After a single to center, Landon Parks fired a strike to second baseman JuJu Lyons, who relayed home to cut down a would-be Maize run at the plate.

Offensively, the Salthawks scored all three of their runs across the second and third innings. Gabe Valadez lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate the first run, before Caiden Beavers doubled to center and Cole Bleything followed with an RBI single to left.

Bleything and Beavers each had one hit and one RBI, while Valadez also drove in a run and led the team with nine defensive putouts. Hutchinson finished the game without committing an error for the sixth time this season.

Maize starter Gavin Short was dealt a tough-luck loss despite striking out eight in five innings. He allowed three unearned runs on just two hits. Ryder Zimmerman drove in the Eagles’ lone run and finished 1-for-3. Maize drew seven walks but left five runners stranded.

The Salthawks are now 7-1 this season against left-handed starting pitchers.

Built in 1912 and originally known as Convention Hall, Memorial Hall is a defining structure within the Downtown Core South Historic District. Despite its historic significance, the building faces major structural and financial challenges that limit its usability and burdens the city’s budget.&nbsp;

Currently, Memorial Hall operates at an annual net loss of nearly $100,000. The building is only rentable from October to May due to the absence of a modern HVAC system, and its rental income falls short of covering basic operating expenses, which range from $110,000 to $126,000 each year.&nbsp;

The city has presented four primary options for the building's future:&nbsp;

To make Memorial Hall viable for year-round use, the city estimates a required investment of over $5.03 million. That figure includes critical upgrades to the HVAC, electrical systems, accessibility, kitchen, restrooms, and interior finishes. However, it does not include the cost of modern audiovisual systems, new furniture, staffing, or the building’s considerable ongoing utility and maintenance costs—estimated at over $200,000 annually.&nbsp;

Complicating matters further, the structure is built over Cow Creek, raising concerns about potential unseen structural issues that could emerge during renovation.&nbsp;

“Memorial Hall holds a unique place in our city’s history, but its future comes with a substantial price tag,” said a city spokesperson. “We’re seeking honest feedback from the community to determine whether preserving this historic building is the right path—or whether another option better serves Hutchinson moving forward.”&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Miles Blaylock carded a 1-over-par 72 on Thursday to win medalist honors and lead Trinity Catholic to a first-place team finish at the Trinity Catholic Invitational, held at Carey Park Golf Course.&nbsp;

Blaylock made the turn at 2-over but closed with a 1-under-par 34 on the back nine, highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 15th. His performance helped the Celtics post a team score of 307 for the tournament title.

Trinity Catholic had four golfers in the top 10. Ian Shaw finished fourth with a 76, while Tyler Casebolt (79) and Lincoln Barnes (80) followed close behind. Seamus Hogan added an 81 for the Celtics.

The Kansas Prisoner Review Board has granted parole to Jimmie Nelms, a man convicted of murdering Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Conroy O’Brien during a 1978 traffic stop near Matfield Green.&nbsp;

Nelms, now in his 70s, was sentenced to two life terms plus additional years for aggravated kidnapping and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is scheduled to be released to out-of-state family custody, officials said.&nbsp;

The decision has sparked strong backlash from state officials and law enforcement groups, who say Nelms’ release undermines justice for the violent killing of a law enforcement officer.&nbsp;

“This cop killer received two life sentences after he brutally executed a highway patrol officer. Now, he is about to be released on parole. There is something deeply wrong with this picture,” said Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach in a statement. “Those who murder law enforcement officers should expect to receive the death penalty, not to be walking free on the streets of Kansas.”&nbsp;

Trooper O’Brien, 26, was conducting a routine traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike during the early morning hours of May 24, 1978, when Nelms and two others overpowered him. Authorities said O’Brien was forced at gunpoint into a roadside ditch, where he was pistol-whipped and fatally shot twice in the head with his own service weapon.&nbsp;

The three suspects, later identified as being wanted in a string of armed robberies across multiple states, were apprehended later that day after engaging another trooper in a gunfight. All were taken into custody following a manhunt.&nbsp;

Col. Erik Smith, superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, said he received notice of the parole decision early Wednesday morning and called the announcement “a gut-punch.”&nbsp;

“There is no conceivable world in which the release of a convicted cop killer—an executioner—is acceptable,” Smith said in a written statement. “While we may vehemently disagree with the Board’s decision, we must live with it by continuing to support [O'Brien’s] surviving family and his blue family.”&nbsp;

The Kansas State Troopers Association also condemned the decision, calling the board’s actions “disgraceful and disgusting.”&nbsp;

O’Brien, a native of Hutchinson, Kansas, joined the patrol in 1974 and transferred to the Kansas Turnpike detail in 1977. He was survived by his pregnant wife and their unborn daughter, who never met her father.&nbsp;

Under Kansas law at the time of Nelms’ sentencing, life imprisonment allowed for the possibility of parole. The Prisoner Review Board said it believes Nelms “is able and willing to fulfill the obligations of a law-abiding citizen and… can be released without detriment to the community or to himself.”&nbsp;

Despite continued opposition during parole hearings over the years, including the most recent in March, the board determined Nelms met the criteria for release.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol emphasized that its members will continue to serve with professionalism and dignity and will not forget the sacrifice of Trooper O’Brien.&nbsp;

A memorial for O’Brien is located on the Kansas Turnpike and on the Kansas Highway Patrol’s official website.&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY —Authorities are investigating a small plane mishap that occurred just after 10:30a.m. Thursday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported an AT-301 Air-Tractor&nbsp;Fixed wing single-engine aircraft piloted by William E. Garrison, 62, Nickerson, was taking off from a private landing strip in the 7700 Block of North Herren Road just east of Nickerson.

The aircraft clipped the top of a 2014 Chevy Impala driven by Jessica M. Williams, 38, Great Bend, who was northbound on Kansas 14.

There were no injuries. Williams was properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp; The FAA and NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.

Drought monitor shows little change from last week 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2025 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships will be held Thursday, May 15 through Saturday, May 17 at Gowans Stadium on the Hutchinson Community College campus.

There will be over 700 participants from 35 teams across the country.&nbsp;

This marks the first time since 2017 that Gowans Stadium has hosted the event, and the seventh time since 2009.

👟 NJCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin next week in Hutch

As temperatures rise and spring transitions into summer, local veterinarians are urging pet owners to pay close attention to their animals’ grooming needs—especially for those breeds with dense undercoats.

Dr. John Austin, a practicing veterinarian, says now is an ideal time to start grooming pets, particularly dogs, to remove their heavy winter coats and help them stay cool in the warmer months.

“We’re seeing a lot of dogs come in with tufts of fur falling out, especially double-coated breeds like Huskies, German Shepherds and Labradors,” Austin said. “These dogs have an outer layer of long, light hair and a tight, dense undercoat. That undercoat doesn’t shed easily on its own.”

Austin recommends a basic steel comb—medium or wide-toothed and with non-bending bristles—as the best tool for tackling shedding. “There are a lot of brushes and gadgets out there,” he said, “but a solid steel comb is really the gold standard for getting that undercoat out.”

Grooming can be a time-consuming task, requiring patience and persistence. “You might comb for weeks and still feel like you’re not making progress, because that hair just keeps coming,” Austin said. “But that’s why those dogs can lay in the snow and be content. That thick coat is insulation.”

While some pet owners opt to shave their dogs to save time, Austin cautions that shaving isn’t always the right choice. Certain breeds—such as Chows, Huskies, and St. Bernards—rely on their coats not just for warmth, but for protection from the sun.

“If you shave those breeds, you can disrupt their natural cooling process,” Austin said. “Worse, their hair sometimes doesn’t grow back correctly—or at all.”

Austin advises checking with a knowledgeable groomer or veterinarian before shaving any dog. “A good groomer will know which breeds are okay to clip and which ones are not,” he said.

In cases where dogs or cats become severely matted, professional intervention may be necessary. “With cats, we sometimes need to sedate them to safely shave off mats,” Austin said. “The mats can get so tight, it’s like having your hair pulled 24/7. It’s painful and can lead to skin problems.”

He recalled instances where shaved mats stood up like a thick carpet. “It’s no wonder the animals feel better after,” he added.

For long-haired cats like Himalayans, Austin recommends the “lion cut,” which leaves the head, paws, and tip of the tail furry while shaving the rest. “It not only helps the cat feel more comfortable, it also gives us a better look at their skin and allows us to identify any rashes or issues early,” he said.

Grooming, whether at home or professionally done, is essential to animal health. “Pets can’t do it themselves—especially long-haired breeds. Nature didn’t design them that way,” Austin said. “As owners, it’s our job to help them stay healthy and comfortable.”

Austin emphasizes the value of experienced groomers, noting the labor-intensive nature of their work. “Spending hours combing out a dog from head to tail isn’t a $30 job—it’s hard work and it’s worth every penny,” he said.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of West 5th and North Washington.

In 1923, W. Lacy Rosier, owner of the Hutchinson Oil Co., built the Palace Garage at 101 W. 5th Ave.

By 1929, the company name was changed to the Rosier Oil Co. and this location was a filling station and garage, along with four other filling stations with bulk fuel delivery at the airport.

By 1938, it became the Ernie Shaffer Oil Co. and filling station.

By 1946, the building had become the Ray &amp; Streeter Motor Co. as a Chrysler-Plymouth new car dealership. The first photo shows that dealership in 1949.

By 1955, it had become solely the Gordon Ray Motor Co.

In 1962, it became the Downtown Dodge dealership with Earl Atteberry.

In 1967, it became the Downtown Ultravan Showroom. The second photo shows that business in 1969.

From 1972 to 1978, the building was used by Woodwork Mfg. Co. as a storage facility and it was readdressed to 405 N. Washington.

Between 1978 through 1994, Mike and Peggy Livingston operated the Morton Interiors &amp; Galleries from this location. The third photo shows that business in 1994 at the end of their run.

The Hutchinson Art Association acquired the building in 1995. The fourth photo shows what it first looked like.

The fifth photo shows the 2017 remodel to the new black and blue paint scheme, and the look it continues with today.

On March 30, 2025, Emily Kohls replaced John Eberle as the new director of the Hutchinson Art Association, still at 405 N. Washington.

The City of Hutchinson will host a public meeting Thursday evening to gather community input on the future of Memorial Hall. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Memorial Hall and is open to all residents.

The meeting will follow an interactive, come-and-go format, allowing attendees to review information and provide feedback at their own pace. City officials say this structure is intended to give everyone an equal opportunity to participate without the need to speak publicly.

• Sell or lease the building to a private developer

• Demolish the structure and replace it with a public green space

• Continue current operations with no major upgrades

• Consider alternative suggestions from the public

City releases format of Memorial Hall Public Meeting 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Fort Hays State University standout Kate (Lehman) Bremerman will be inducted into the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Hall of Fame on June 2 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Lehman, a Newton High School alum, starred on the basketball court from 2011 to 2015 for FHSU, finishing her career as one of the most dominant post players in NCAA Division II history. She still holds the MIAA and FHSU records for career blocked shots with 515—more than doubling the conference’s previous mark. Her total ranks third all-time in Division II, and her 5.3 blocks per game as a junior remains an NCAA record for that class year.

Lehman was a two-time All-American, four-time All-MIAA honoree, and a three-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. She also collected 1,917 points and 1,109 rebounds during her time with the Tigers, making her the first player in program history to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds—a milestone matched only recently.

In addition to her athletic accolades, Lehman excelled academically. She earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, was named MIAA Scholar-Athlete four times, and became Fort Hays State’s first recipient of the Ken B. Jones Award, which recognizes the top student-athlete in the MIAA for excellence in athletics, academics, and community service.

She will be inducted alongside 10 other individuals as part of the 2025 MIAA Hall of Fame class.

Bremerman currently serves as the principal at Northridge Elementary School in the USD 373 Newton Public Schools system.

🏀 Newton native Kate (Lehman) Bremerman named to MIAA Hall of Fame

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School honored its top students and athletes during the annual Senior Awards Ceremony on Wednesday morning.

Athletic Director Steve Kappenman presented the Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year award to Kade Smith, while Grace Posch received the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year honor.

Smith, who has signed to continue his academic and football career at Hutchinson Community College, capped off an exceptional senior year in both football and wrestling.

On the gridiron, Smith rushed for 1,878 yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging nearly nine yards per carry. He recorded nine games with over 100 rushing yards, including a career-high 245 yards on 24 attempts against Liberal.

In wrestling, Smith concluded his career tied with Romero Cotton for the most wins in program history with 136. He earned a third-place finish at the Class 5A state tournament on March 1 in Park City.

Posch is headed to Seward County Community College to play basketball and pursue her academic goals. She was a multi-sport standout for the Salthawks, excelling in both basketball and volleyball.

On the basketball court, Posch scored 968 career points. She shot 35% from three-point range and 80% from the free-throw line during her senior season, averaging 12 points per game—second on the team behind Kaia Smith. She topped 20 points in three games, including a season-high 22 against Salina South.

In volleyball, Posch was an honorable mention selection on the all-league team in 2024 and was a four-year varsity letterwinner.

The City of Hutchinson has provided some updates on projects that are in process. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Public Works Director Cecil Weible tells us that the 30 Avenue reconstruction project is in the pavement restoration phase. &nbsp;They have had some weather-related delays due to recent rainfall. &nbsp;‘&nbsp;

Procon Construction has completed the installation of a new curb and gutter and has poured the east bound lane of 30 Avenue. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Left remaining is the pouring of the westbound lane and completion of new pavement at the 30 Avenue and Adams Street Interview. &nbsp;

The project is trending for a late May completion with the roadway opening to traffic. &nbsp;

Weible tells us that the project is trending on schedule for Kansas Concrete’s goal of opening in late fall of this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Their subcontractor continues to make process on pavement removal and excavation of the existing trumpet ramp at Avenue A. The Avenue A bridge has been demolished, and removal of the debris is ongoing. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Next up is removal of the Avenue A pavement between Adams Street and Madison Street and continued excavation of Woodie Seat southward to Avenue B. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The State Fair Detention Basin was announced in 2024. &nbsp;It is set to be built behind the Water Treatment Center on the southwest corner of 23 Avenue and Severance Street. &nbsp;

Weible tells us that the design of the water basin is scheduled to be completed this month with an anticipated presentation to the City Council in June or July.&nbsp;

There are several projects that need to be completed before the detention basin construction can begin. The construction of the detention basin will begin sometime following the completion of the necessary work. &nbsp;&nbsp;
