For Dr. Riley Dreher, the road to becoming a chiropractor wasn’t a straight line—but it’s one that’s now led him to Boulder, Colorado, where he’ll begin his career helping athletes and active individuals stay healthy and injury-free.

Dreher, a Buhler High School graduate and former multi-sport athlete, recently earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Parker University in Dallas. He plans to be a partner, with a family member, in a chiropractic practice in Boulder, focusing on sports medicine and functional health.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Dreher said in a recent interview. “I just got my license the other day, and now I’m preparing to move and get started. But I’m excited to start serving my new community.”

His inspiration for the career path goes back to third grade, when a neck injury during a baseball tournament led him to local chiropractor Dr. Jerry Burning. The experience left a lasting impression.

“He fixed me up, and I thought, ‘This guy just changed my life with his hands,’” Dreher said. “From then on, I knew I wanted to help people the same way.

After earning an associate degree in science from Hutchinson Community College and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Wichita State University, Dreher took time off to gain life experience, including working as a wildland firefighter out west. He eventually enrolled at Parker University, drawn by its evidence-based approach to chiropractic care.

“Parker had the sports medicine focus and the research backing I wanted,” he said. “It’s not just about feeling better—it’s about understanding why treatments work and how we can track progress.”

During his time at Parker, Dreher earned leadership honors and was recognized by the university board with a prestigious award given to one student each trimester. He also joined the Motion Palpation Institute (MPI), a national organization that helped shape his treatment philosophy and connect him with like-minded professionals.

Now, Dreher is preparing to treat Boulder’s active population, from high school athletes to outdoor enthusiasts. His practice will emphasize detailed assessments, one-on-one appointments, and tailored rehabilitation plans designed to address root causes of pain.

“The goal is to get people back to doing what they love—whether that’s being on the field, hitting the trails, or skiing,” he said. “We’re looking at long-term solutions, not just quick fixes.”

Though he's starting a new chapter in Colorado, Dreher acknowledges the support of his Kansas roots, including his parents, Rob Dreher and Dana Copple, who he credits for their constant encouragement.

“They’ve always had my back,” he said. “And I hope I can make them proud as I start this next journey.”

When asked if a return to Kansas might be in the cards someday, Dreher smiled. “Never say never,” he said.

For now, the newly minted chiropractor is ready to make an impact in Boulder—one adjustment at a time.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 500 block of East Sherman.

William Kelly moved to Hutchinson in 1891 and, along with William Carr, partnered to establish the Monarch Flour Mill at Avenue D and Washington.

In 1905, William McMillian of the Kansas Grain Co. built a showcase home at 512 E. Sherman. It was an "Old Style" architectural design that had 28 rooms. The first photo shows that grand home.

Also in 1905, William Kelly broke off to establish the William Kelly Milling Co. at 400 S. Main Street. The second photo shows that venture in 1908.

Kelly's Famous Flour went on to become nationally successful.

In 1911, William McMillian sold out his interests here to move to Seattle, Washington. That included his 512 E. Sherman residence that he sold to William Kelly. His son Charles Kelly inherited the home, but in the 1950s it was subdivided into apartments.

In June of 1980, the 400 S. Main mill was vacated and razed.

In 1988, the 1500 E. Ave. B facility was sold to the Irsik-Doll Feed Co.

The third photo shows the 512 E. Sherman residence today, still multiple apartments, owned by Frankenfield Investments L.L.C. of Wichita.

📷 Throwback Thursday: William Kelly Residence - Vol. 122

 Law enforcement agencies across the country are observing National Police Week, a time set aside to honor officers who have died in the line of duty and to show support for those who continue to serve.

President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation in 1962 designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Since then, communities nationwide have held events in recognition of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers.

The annual Candlelight Vigil, a hallmark of the week, will take place Tuesday from 8 to 10 p.m. on the National Mall in Washington. During the ceremony, high-ranking government officials and others will read aloud the names of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The event will be streamed live on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s YouTube, Facebook and X platforms. More details can be found at nleomf.org.

In Kansas, several local observances are scheduled to commemorate Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15.

In Rice County, the Sheriff’s Office will observe Peace Officers Memorial Day with a ceremony at 9 a.m. Thursday in the front parking lot of the agency’s headquarters.

Harvey County will hold a remembrance ceremony Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Law Enforcement Center at 120 E. Seventh St. in Newton. Officials there said the ceremony provides an opportunity to reflect and honor those who gave their lives in service.

“We’re proud of the work of our deputies here at the sheriff’s office, as well as the local departments throughout our county,” a Harvey County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said. “Thank you for what you do for our residents.”

In Reno County, the Hutchinson Police Department and the Reno County Sheriff’s Office will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at the Law Enforcement Center.

McPherson County held its memorial service Wednesday evening.

Peace Officers Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement and the enduring legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of public safety.

Here is a list of the fallen officers in the Hutch Post-area

Reno County Sheriff’s Office &nbsp; Undersheriff Edward Metz – Jan. 7, 1901&nbsp; |Undersheriff Metz was killed after being run over by a Missouri Pacific passenger train. Undersheriff Metz was boarding the train for Wellington where he was to testify in a horse thief trial. His body was found with his legs and hand severed. Although there were signs of a struggle it is not known for sure whether his death was accidental or a result of a crime.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Deputy Sheriff Thomas Fowler – Dec. 11, 1910&nbsp; Deputy Sheriff Thomas Fowler was shot and killed while transporting a subject to jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He had just arrested the man following a stakeout of burglary tools in Hutchinson. When the man arrived at the scene Deputy Fowler arrested him. The suspect attempted to bribe Deputy Fowler as he was being driven to jail. When Deputy Fowler refused the bribe the man produced a pistol and fired a warning shot. As Deputy Fowler reached for his own gun the man shot him.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The suspect was apprehended in Ottawa, Kansas, in April of 1911. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to life. On July 11, 1916, he was hospitalized in critical condition after he was stabbed by a fellow inmate. Many newspaper reports stating he could not live were wrong. He recovered after six weeks in the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Deputy Fowler was survived by four sons. He was preceded in death by his wife.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Hutchinson Police Department &nbsp; Officer Reason Sherman Monroe – July 3, 1924&nbsp; On July 2nd, 1924, Officer Reason Sherman Monroe went to Brubaker Grocery store, located at 123 S. Adams, to locate a suspect who had earlier pistol whipped his wife. When Officer Monroe confronted the suspect, the suspect picked up his four-year-old son and used him as a shield, as he shot at Officer Monroe. &nbsp;

Officer Monroe refused to return fire in fear that he would strike the young child, and he was shot multiple times. Officer Monroe was transported to Grace Methodist hospital, located at 7th and Main, where he died from his injuries on July 3rd,1924. Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, end of watch July 3rd, 1924.&nbsp;

Officer Kenneth Kennedy – Sept. 15, 1972&nbsp; On Friday, September 15th, 1972, Officer Kenneth Kennedy and Reserve Officer Michael Coldren went to 918 South Plum in plain clothes and attempted to buy liquor in violation of the law. &nbsp;

After the undercover purchase of illegal liquor, the officers attempted to arrest the male suspect, and a fight ensued. A female exited the kitchen area during the struggle and shot both officers. &nbsp;

Officer Ken Kennedy return fire and struck the female suspect twice. Officer Kennedy pulled the trigger two more times on his revolver but did not have the strength to have the hammer fall. Officer Ken Kennedy succumbed to his injuries and died on scene. &nbsp;

Officer Coldren was rendered unconscious from a gunshot to the head and when he regained consciousness summoned help. The section of K-61 that runs through Hutchinson was named in honor of Officer Kennedy. Officer Kenneth Kennedy, end of watch September 15th, 1972.&nbsp;

McPherson Police Department&nbsp; Charles Marrion Bruce&nbsp; - March 14, 1933&nbsp;

Night Chief Charles Bruce was shot and killed after interrupting a burglary at a local gas station.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

After informing the owner of the station, he returned to the location and found several men in front of the business. They opened fire on him, fatally wounding him. The suspects were later shot and killed by a posse.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chief Bruce was a United States Army WWI veteran. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter.&nbsp;

Martin H. Grant&nbsp;- &nbsp;Feb. 12, 1937&nbsp;

Night Chief Grant suffered a fatal heart shortly after struggling with a suspect. He had responded to a cafe at North Main Street and struggled with a disorderly patron. He was able to place the man under arrest and took him to the City Jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chief Grant began to feel sick shortly after midnight and collapsed shortly thereafter.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvey County Sheriff's Office Kurt Andrew Ford - April 9, 2006

Deputy Sheriff Kurt Ford was shot and killed while conducting a forced entry during a hostage situation at 131 SE 14th Street in Newton.  

The hostage situation stemmed from a domestic disturbance earlier in the evening. When officers arrived at the home the male subject took a female subject hostage. Deputy Ford and other members of the Harvey County Emergency Response Team responded to the scene. Three hours into the standoff the subject started attacking the hostage. The ERT team made a forced entry into the home and was met with gunfire from the man, who was armed with two handguns.  

Deputy Ford was struck in the head and fatally wounded. Another member of the team, a detective with the Hesston Police Department, was shot twice and wounded. The subject remained barricaded in the home for an additional five hours before surrendering.  

The subject, a convicted felon, had a history of domestic violence reports at his home. Police later found multiple weapons at the scene. The man was convicted of capital murder on June 28th, 2006, and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.  

Deputy Ford had just returned to law enforcement to serve with the Harvey County Sheriff's Office four months earlier. He had previously served in law enforcement for 13 years with multiple agencies in Kansas and Colorado. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Newton Police Department Albert J. DuFriend - Nov. 22, 1928 Night Chief DuFriend died after being stricken by internal hemorrhaging while responding to a store robbery with another officer.

The hemorrhaging was brought on by a combination of the excitement of the call and his asthma.

Assistant Chief Harry L Bolin - June 17, 1932 Assistant Chief Bolin was killed in an automobile accident while following a car he suspected of transporting illegal whiskey.

To avoid detection, he was driving without headlights on and ran off the road into a ditch.&nbsp;

Kingman Police Department Captain Larry Berry - April 15, 1973 &nbsp;Captain Larry Beery was shot and killed while checking on business doors in the early morning.&nbsp;

The suspect(s) fled the scene and were never identified. They remain at large.&nbsp;

Captain Beery was a United States Air Force veteran and had served with the Kingman Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.&nbsp;

He is buried at Clear Creek Cemetery in Leon County, Texas.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Pratt Police Department Officer William Henry Rich Officer Rich was struck and killed by a vehicle while painting a "No U-turn" sign on a street at 1 a.m.

Rice County Sheriff's Office&nbsp; Deputy William Henry Everett - Nov. 24, 1954 Deputy William Everett was struck and killed by a drunk driver after responding to the scene of an accident on the Little Arkansas bridge of U.S. Highway 50.

When he arrived, he found debris in the roadway but could not locate the driver or the vehicle. The driver had returned to the accident scene to see the damage to the bridge. When he returned, he struck Deputy Everett, severing his leg. Deputy Everett bled to death at the scene of the incident. 

The driver of the vehicle that struck Deputy Everett was intoxicated. He pled guilty to fourth-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to two years. 

Deputy Everett was a United States World War I veteran and had served with the Rice County Sheriff's Office for 2 years. He was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Although there were signs of a struggle it is not known for sure whether his death was accidental or a result of a crime.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Deputy Sheriff Thomas Fowler – Dec. 11, 1910&nbsp; Deputy Sheriff Thomas Fowler was shot and killed while transporting a subject to jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He had just arrested the man following a stakeout of burglary tools in Hutchinson. When the man arrived at the scene Deputy Fowler arrested him. The suspect attempted to bribe Deputy Fowler as he was being driven to jail. When Deputy Fowler refused the bribe the man produced a pistol and fired a warning shot. As Deputy Fowler reached for his own gun the man shot him.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The suspect was apprehended in Ottawa, Kansas, in April of 1911. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to life. On July 11, 1916, he was hospitalized in critical condition after he was stabbed by a fellow inmate. Many newspaper reports stating he could not live were wrong. He recovered after six weeks in the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Deputy Fowler was survived by four sons. He was preceded in death by his wife.&nbsp; &nbsp;Hutchinson Police Department &nbsp; Officer Reason Sherman Monroe – July 3, 1924&nbsp; On July 2nd, 1924, Officer Reason Sherman Monroe went to Brubaker Grocery store, located at 123 S. Adams, to locate a suspect who had earlier pistol whipped his wife. When Officer Monroe confronted the suspect, the suspect picked up his four-year-old son and used him as a shield, as he shot at Officer Monroe. &nbsp;<figure>

Officer Monroe was transported to Grace Methodist hospital, located at 7th and Main, where he died from his injuries on July 3rd,1924. Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, end of watch July 3rd, 1924.&nbsp;Officer Kenneth Kennedy – Sept. 15, 1972&nbsp; On Friday, September 15th, 1972, Officer Kenneth Kennedy and Reserve Officer Michael Coldren went to 918 South Plum in plain clothes and attempted to buy liquor in violation of the law. &nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>After the undercover purchase of illegal liquor, the officers attempted to arrest the male suspect, and a fight ensued. A female exited the kitchen area during the struggle and shot both officers. &nbsp;Officer Ken Kennedy return fire and struck the female suspect twice. Officer Kennedy pulled the trigger two more times on his revolver but did not have the strength to have the hammer fall. Officer Ken Kennedy succumbed to his injuries and died on scene. &nbsp;Officer Coldren was rendered unconscious from a gunshot to the head and when he regained consciousness summoned help. The section of K-61 that runs through Hutchinson was named in honor of Officer Kennedy. They opened fire on him, fatally wounding him. The suspects were later shot and killed by a posse.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Chief Bruce was a United States Army WWI veteran. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter.&nbsp;Martin H. Grant&nbsp;- &nbsp;Feb. 12, 1937&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Night Chief Grant suffered a fatal heart shortly after struggling with a suspect. He had responded to a cafe at North Main Street and struggled with a disorderly patron. He was able to place the man under arrest and took him to the City Jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Chief Grant began to feel sick shortly after midnight and collapsed shortly thereafter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Harvey County&nbsp;</h2>Harvey County Sheriff's Office Kurt Andrew Ford - April 9, 2006<figure>

 </figure>Deputy Sheriff Kurt Ford was shot and killed while conducting a forced entry during a hostage situation at 131 SE 14th Street in Newton. The hostage situation stemmed from a domestic disturbance earlier in the evening. When officers arrived at the home the male subject took a female subject hostage. Deputy Ford and other members of the Harvey County Emergency Response Team responded to the scene. Three hours into the standoff the subject started attacking the hostage. The ERT team made a forced entry into the home and was met with gunfire from the man, who was armed with two handguns. Deputy Ford was struck in the head and fatally wounded. Another member of the team, a detective with the Hesston Police Department, was shot twice and wounded. The subject remained barricaded in the home for an additional five hours before surrendering. The subject, a convicted felon, had a history of domestic violence reports at his home. Police later found multiple weapons at the scene. The man was convicted of capital murder on June 28th, 2006, and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. Deputy Ford had just returned to law enforcement to serve with the Harvey County Sheriff's Office four months earlier. He had previously served in law enforcement for 13 years with multiple agencies in Kansas and Colorado. He is survived by his wife and two sons.Newton Police Department Albert J. DuFriend - Nov. 22, 1928 Night Chief DuFriend died after being stricken by internal hemorrhaging while responding to a store robbery with another officer. The hemorrhaging was brought on by a combination of the excitement of the call and his asthma.Assistant Chief Harry L Bolin - June 17, 1932 Assistant Chief Bolin was killed in an automobile accident while following a car he suspected of transporting illegal whiskey. To avoid detection, he was driving without headlights on and ran off the road into a ditch.&nbsp;<h2>Kingman County&nbsp;</h2>Kingman Police Department Captain Larry Berry - April 15, 1973 &nbsp;Captain Larry Beery was shot and killed while checking on business doors in the early morning.&nbsp;The suspect(s) fled the scene and were never identified. They remain at large.&nbsp;Captain Beery was a United States Air Force veteran and had served with the Kingman Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.&nbsp;He is buried at Clear Creek Cemetery in Leon County, Texas.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h2>Pratt County</h2>Pratt Police Department Officer William Henry Rich Officer Rich was struck and killed by a vehicle while painting a "No U-turn" sign on a street at 1 a.m.<h2>Rice County</h2>Rice County Sheriff's Office&nbsp; Deputy William Henry Everett - Nov. 24, 1954 Deputy William Everett was struck and killed by a drunk driver after responding to the scene of an accident on the Little Arkansas bridge of U.S. Highway 50. When he arrived, he found debris in the roadway but could not locate the driver or the vehicle. The driver had returned to the accident scene to see the damage to the bridge. When he returned, he struck Deputy Everett, severing his leg. Deputy Everett bled to death at the scene of the incident. The driver of the vehicle that struck Deputy Everett was intoxicated. He pled guilty to fourth-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to two years. Deputy Everett was a United States World War I veteran and had served with the Rice County Sheriff's Office for 2 years. He was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

HALSTEAD, Kan. — The Central Kansas League will look a little different next basketball season, as former Haven High School boys basketball coach Lonnie Paramore has accepted the same job at Halstead High School, USD 440 Halstead-Bentley announced on Wednesday.

Paramore spent the last 17 seasons at Haven High School, where he took over the Wildcats' program in 2008. He guided the Wildcats to a 19-4 record this past season, falling in the sub-state championship game to Cheney. 

While at Haven, Paramore became the winningest coach in program history. He also served as cross country coach and teaching a variety of subjects, including history, physical education, and strength and conditioning.

Prior to Haven, Paramore spent 13 years at Fairfield High School, starting in 1995. There, he held head coaching duties for boys basketball, cross country, and tennis. 

His coaching career also includes assistant stints at Sterling College and Ashland High School.

Over his 33-year coaching career, Paramore has amassed more than 400 victories and has earned multiple accolades, including Reno County Boys Basketball Coach of the Year honors in 2018 and 2020. He was inducted into the Sterling College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024.

A Sterling College graduate, Paramore had an illustrious playing career with the Warriors in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was a three-year letter winner and earned All-KCAC and NAIA All-District honors twice. A two-time team MVP, he was named the KCAC Co-Player of the Year and Sterling’s Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1990-91. When his playing career concluded, he ranked second in school history for single-game scoring (44 points), season scoring average (23.6 ppg), points scored in a season, and held records for 3-pointers made in a season (63), career field goal percentage (49.6%), and free throw percentage (81.2%). He also ranked fifth in total career points.

HESSTON, Kan. — Central Christian School left no doubt at the Wheat State League/Heart of the Plains League boys golf championship Tuesday, cruising to a commanding team victory at Hesston Golf Course with a score of 318, 79 strokes ahead of runner-up Goessel.

Ry Kooiman led the charge for the Cougars, firing an even-par 71 to win the individual title. Cael Kooiman, finished third with a 79, while teammates Nathan Reed (83), Tyler Reed (85), and Brody Froese (89) all placed inside the top 10.

The Cougars had all six golfers finish among the top 13, including Tarren Scripsick, who shot a 99. Their dominant showing easily outpaced the field, with Goessel (397) and Solomon (417) rounding out the top three.

Easton Glessner of Centre took second individually with a 78, while Goessel’s Levi Schrag placed fourth at 80.

Solomon’s Breken Coup (93) and Canton-Galva’s Jase Beltz (91) also cracked the top 10, as did Pretty Prairie’s Braden Woods (94).

DERBY, Kan. — Circle claimed the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III boys golf championship Tuesday at Derby Golf &amp; Country Club, edging Buhler by two strokes.

The T-Birds carded a team total of 327 to narrowly finish ahead of Buhler at 329. McPherson placed third with a 343, followed by Augusta (344), Winfield (349) and Mulvane (350).

McPherson’s Cole Cooper captured the individual crown, firing a 76 to top the field. Buhler’s Zach Chance and Circle’s Anderson Helmer tied for second with rounds of 78.

Buhler had three golfers finish in the top 15, including Drew DeMeyer, who tied for fourth with a 79, and brothers Nick and Zach Chance, who posted rounds of 86 and 78, respectively. Isaiah Heredia added an 86 for the Crusaders, and Jace Heimerman rounded out the team score with a 90.

McPherson’s Lawson Ediger tied for 13th with an 86, and Paxton Ingels contributed a 90 for the Bullpups, who had four players finish in the top 25.

Circle placed three golfers in the top 10, Helmer (78), Logan Martin (79), and Kolton Parrish (85), while Wyatt Sharp added an 85 to help secure the team title.

⛳ Circle edges Buhler for AVCTL-III title; McPherson’s Cole Cooper wins individual title

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — USD 308 Hutchinson Public Schools broke ground Tuesday afternoon on the <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/b97f3ccc-31cb-4849-a5f2-1e8d0a7148ef">future Lil' Hawks Child Care Center</a>, a project aimed at expanding early childhood education opportunities in the district.

The new facility will be located at the corner of 29th Avenue and Adams Street, just northwest of Morgan Elementary School.&nbsp;

“This is a project that has been in the works for a long time,” said Stacy Goss, mayor of Hutchinson and the district’s director of communications.

USD 308 Board of Education President Laura Corey shared a personal story during the ceremony, recalling her struggle to find child care when she was expecting her first child more than 15 years ago.

“I had barely gotten a faint line on a pregnancy test before that all-consuming panic hit,” Corey said. “What are we going to do for child care? I vividly remember calling everyone I knew, trying to find a spot for a baby that wasn’t even born yet. That moment stuck with me — not because it was rare, but because it is so common.”

Corey highlighted the district’s long-standing commitment to early childhood education. She noted that USD 308 has provided child care services since 1999 through a center originally built by Hutchinson High School students as part of a career and technical education program.

“That center has cared for generations of Hutchinson kids for over 25 years,” Corey said. “That’s a legacy of hands-on learning, service, and collaboration — one that we are proud to build on today.”

Corey emphasized the importance of accessible early education, citing research that shows children who attend high-quality child care are more likely to succeed academically and socially.

“As both a parent and your school board president, I’m proud to say this center reflects exactly what Hutchinson Public Schools stands for — integrity, compassion, innovation and perseverance,” Corey said.

The district’s Lil' Hawks Early Childhood Programs and the Early Education Center of Reno County currently offer services for pregnant women and children from birth to age 3, including free preschool for families with children ages 3-5. Center-based child care is offered on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Preschool programs follow the USD 308 academic calendar, with site options at Morgan Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Park Place, and the Shirley J. Hutcherson Center.

USD 308 holds groundbreaking for Lil' Hawks Child Care Center

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More than 700 student-athletes from 35 teams across the country will converge on Hutchinson Community College this week as the 2025 NJCAA Division I National Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships return to Gowans Stadium, May 15-17.

This year marks the eighth time since 2009 and the first since 2017, that Gowans Stadium will serve as host for the national event.

Dr. Brett Monaghan, NJCAA vice president for championships, membership and sports governance, said the Hutchinson community and college continue to set the standard for hosting national events.

“Running any national championship is a big undertaking, but track and field especially requires extensive coordination,” Monaghan said. “Certainly the team at Hutchinson — Steve Carpenter, Josh Gooch and the staff — are well-prepared. They’ve hosted NJCAA events before, and there’s a lot of confidence in what they bring.”

The three-day meet will feature over 20 events in both men’s and women’s competition, from sprints and distance races to jumps and throws. Qualification standards ensure that only the top athletes compete, with approximately 16 individuals per event.

“You really do see future Olympians at this meet,” Monaghan said. “The level of athleticism is tremendous, and it’s a testament to the coaches who recruit and develop these student-athletes.”

The competition begins Thursday morning with combined events and field competitions at both Gowans Stadium and Fairgrounds Park, followed by relay and distance finals in the evening. Action continues Friday with preliminary rounds and more field events, before the championships wrap up Saturday with event finals and the awards presentation.

Monaghan praised the community's support, from HutchCC staff to Visit Hutch and local volunteers.

“Hutch is a special place,” Monaghan said. “Every time I come here, I’m impressed by the people who get involved. They want what’s best for the student-athletes, and that’s what makes this event great.”

Tickets are $10 for a single-day adult pass and $5 for K-6. Children that are not yet in school are free.

👟 NJCAA Track & Field Championships begin Thursday

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and local advocates are stepping into the spotlight to bring critical conversations to the forefront.&nbsp; Lindsay Miller and Louise McIntyre of NAMI Reno County visited the BW Morning show to discuss the organization’s mission, services, and the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness.&nbsp;

“We just want to change things—spread awareness, support, advocacy, and education,” said McIntire . “And most importantly, stop the stigma.”&nbsp;

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the largest grassroots mental health organization in the country, with affiliates across nearly all states. The Reno County chapter, a volunteer-run affiliate of NAMI Kansas, offers a lifeline of resources for local residents. This includes twice-monthly support group meetings at the Hutchinson Public Library on the second and fourth Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m.—completely free and open to the public.&nbsp;

While NAMI is not a provider of therapy or clinical services, the organization acts as a vital connector. “If someone contacts us needing help, we do everything we can to find the right resources,” said Miller. “And if we can’t help directly, we know someone who can.”&nbsp;

Both McIntyre and Miller bring a deeply personal perspective to their advocacy. “I’ve lived with bipolar one for 32 years,” Miller shared. “Ten years ago, I couldn’t have sat in a room and had this conversation. But it takes time, and that’s okay.”&nbsp;

Their personal experiences fuel their passion for peer-led programs, including their upcoming Peer-to-Peer Class, running from June 9 through July 28, every Monday from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mary Magdalene House. The free, eight-week course is designed for individuals living with mental illness and is led by others who have walked the same path.&nbsp;

“It’s taught by people who understand what it's like when even a shower feels out of reach,” McIntire said. “By week two or three, people who weren’t sure they belonged are opening up. It’s powerful.”&nbsp;

NAMI of Reno County also offers educational classes for family members—broadly defined as anyone who loves someone with a mental illness. These sessions help participants learn how to support their loved ones effectively and communicate in ways that de-escalate crises.&nbsp;

“People need to understand that mental illness is not a character flaw—it’s a disease, just like diabetes,” McIntire emphasized. “If someone says, ‘I’m bipolar, so I can’t do that,’ there shouldn’t be any more stigma than if they said, ‘I’m diabetic.’”&nbsp;

In a push to connect the community, NAMI Reno County will host a Mental Health Town Hall on May 29, in partnership with Milestone Clubhouse and Health on Main. The event will feature local leaders and advocates and provide a platform for open discussion, connection, and education.&nbsp;

The Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I and Heart of America held their league golf tournaments on Monday. Below are the results from the Hutch Post-area schools.

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School placed third in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I boys golf championship Monday at Pine Bay Golf Course, finishing behind Maize South and Maize.

Maize South cruised to the team title with a score of 308, placing all six of its golfers in the top 10. The Mavericks were led by medalist Joe Binger, who shot a 3-over-par 73 to claim individual honors. Colten Hoover (76) and Conrad Parkhurst (77) followed closely to complete a dominant top-three sweep.

Hutchinson carded a team score of 349 to take third place, edging Derby (354) and Valley Center (356) in a tightly contested race. The Salthawks finished two strokes behind Maize (347), which finished in second. Senior Mitchell Rice led the Salthawks with an 84, tying for 10th overall. Tate England shot an 87, while Alex Haas (88), Landyn Powell (90), Kevin Wilson (93) and Maks Dreiling (93) rounded out the scoring for Hutchinson.

HESSTON, Kan. — Trinity Catholic claimed the Heart of America League boys golf championship in dominant fashion Monday at Hesston Golf Course, firing a team score of 310.

The Celtics placed all six golfers in the top nine, each earning first-team all-league honors. Lincoln Barnes claimed the individual title after defeating teammate Ian Shaw in a two-hole playoff after each shot a 4-over-par 75. This is the second straight HOA league title for Barnes. Trinity also received matching rounds of 80 from Miles Blaylock and Tyler Casebolt, while Seamus Hogan (86) and Matt Armour (87) rounded out a deep lineup that finished 42 strokes ahead of runner-up Sterling.

Sterling posted a 352 to take second place, led by Cameron Morris with an 83 and supported by Waylon Schmidt and Wyatt Newberry, who each shot 89. Lane Weigel added a 91.

Sedgwick finished fourth with a team score of 409, highlighted by Keighan Earles’ sixth-place finish at 85. Teammates Renley&nbsp;Eggleston (104), Wyatt ReQua (110), Abby Banta (110), and Nate Hansen (113) contributed to the Cardinals’ total.

Inman took fifth at 419. Braeden Stutzman led the Teutons with a 92, followed by Creighton Friesen (97) and Keetan McEuen (111).

PRATT, Kan. — The Pratt Greenbacks claimed the Central Kansas League boys golf title on Monday at Park Hills Golf Course. The Greenbacks were led by individual champion, Grant McAtee.&nbsp;

McAtee shot an even-par 72 to win individual honors, while teammates Beau Ferrell (77) and Quinton Humble (80) finished second and third, respectively, to help the Greenbacks finish 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Hesston (334).

Hesston placed three golfers in a tie for fourth. Austin Penner, Aiden Bridgeman and Eli Frantz all carded rounds of 82. Grant Waterson and Eli Roth each shot 88 to round out the Swathers’ scoring.

Halstead finished fifth in the team standings with a 388. Wesley Parks led the Dragons with an 87, good for eighth place overall. Maxx Linton shot 98 and Lance Anderson added a 99.

Nickerson placed seventh with a 434. Kyler Nikkel led the Panthers with a 103, followed by Addrick Nelson at 108 and Jacob Myers at 109.

Hoisington took third place as a team (358), led by Logan Cossel’s seventh-place 84 and two other top-15 finishers in Nolan Jacobs (87) and Karson Kinman (92). Hillsboro was fourth at 383, paced by Lincoln Wichert’s 91.
