Buhler USD 313 received its numbers for postsecondary progress and USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman is pleased.

"They look at two years out after graduation and they say, if a student has a certificate, they obtained a certificate in high school, we're talking like a welding certificate, a CNA certificate in high school, that would be considered successful," Couchman said. "That's a certificate within two years of graduating. The other two are having to do with in college. Are you enrolled two years after graduating from high school or have you already earned a degree two years out of high school."

The effective rate for Buhler is up to 68.4% in 2019, the newest year added, with a five year effective average of 64%.

"I'm excited about that it is that high," Couchman said. "I'm also excited that we beat what we call our predicted effective rate. That is where they statistically calculate our at-risk factors. Those at-risk factors are things like cumulative poverty, mobility, chronic absenteeism, that's 10% or more of the school year missed."

Couchman notes that following the at-risk metrics will be important in the next couple of years in particular, as the years being dealt with are all pre-COVID on the latest numbers.

"We've had a lot of students move around the last two years due to COVID," Couchman said. "The other one is cumulative poverty. Ironically, our poverty comes from those home economic surveys and the free and reduced lunches. Our poverty count has actually went down, because families didn't turn them in. Those factors have went down, where their chronic absenteeism went up because students missed more school last year and the last two years."

Couchman also notes that there could be a significant impact on if students started college or not.

&nbsp; Lloyd D. Coon, 92, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. Lloyd was born April 15, 1929 on a farm near Dalton, the son of Clarence and Lucy (Schmeissner) Coon.&nbsp; He graduated from Belle Plaine High School, received a BA from Southwestern College and a Masters of Education from the University of Oklahoma.&nbsp; He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.&nbsp; He was a lifetime teacher and counselor.&nbsp; He taught in Anthony, Bogue, Belleville and Hutchinson.&nbsp; On May 25, 1954, he married Dorothy Burnett.&nbsp; She passed away April 12, 2017.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Lloyd was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Duo Sunday School Class, The Hutchinson Breakfast Lions Club, American Legion Post 68 of Hutchinson and the NRA. He is also preceded in death by his parents; and son, Roy Coon. Lloyd is survived by his daughters, Betty (Tony) Vernier of Ohio and Mary Coon of Hutchinson; a son, Barry (Jeanne) Coon of Oklahoma; brother, Kenneth (Kay) Coon of New&nbsp;Mexico; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. &nbsp; Pratt - Charles "Charlie" Richard Boldt, 79, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 12, 1942 in Lyons, to Lowell Earnest and Matilda Emma (Dipple) Boldt. Charlie married Kerri Leigh (Mullinex) Boldt on November 27, 1987 in Overland Park. They were married for 33 years. Charlie graduated from Dodge City High School in 1960 and went on to earn his Associates Degree from Dodge City Community College in 1962. He worked in the grain business for many years before going to work at Pratt County Road Department. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gambling, doing yardwork and spending time with family. He is survived by his wife, Kerri; son, Michael (Jennifer) Boldt of Wichita; daughters, Christie (Brian) Moye of Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Brooks (Curt) Wilson of McPherson; grandchildren, Katy Boldt, Grant (McKayla) Boldt, Owen Wilson, Allie Smith, Aubrey Wilson and Chloe Wilson; and honorary daughter, Brittany (Ed) Albers of Cunningham. AMARILLO, Texas – Sophomore All-American Ben Partridge fired a third-straight under-par round to lead the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team to a fourth-place tie on Tuesday at the West Texas A&amp;M Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational at the Amarillo Country Club.

Partridge finished with a 1-under par 70 on Tuesday to tie for second place individually.

The Blue Dragons shot a 3-over par 287 and tied Jayhawk Conference rival Garden City for fourth place at 854. The Blue Dragons and Broncbusters were the highest-finishing NJCAA teams in the NCAA Division II-heavy field. Tournament host West Texas A&amp;M won the tournament at 837 (-15).

Hutchinson had a school-record seven-tournament winning streak, which dated back to the second spring tournament of the 2020-21 season, come to an end.

The Blue Dragons counted Partridge’s 70, Blake Saffel’s 71, Harry Crockett’s 72 and Dominic Clemons’ 74 in its team score on Tuesday. Garden City made up a lot of ground on the Blue Dragons in the final round, shooting a 6-under 278.

With rounds of 65, 70 and 70, Partridge tied for second with West Texas’ Eemili Jarvinen and 8-under 205. Cameron University’s Tyler Kaman birdied his final hole and won individual honors at 9-under 204 after a final-round 68.

Crockett was the only other Top 20 individual placer for the Blue Dragons. Crockett finished in a five-way tie for 14th at even-par 213.

Clemons tied for 40th at 5-over 218. Saffel tied for 43rd at 6-over 219. Sophomore Cameron Rios-Ceballos finished with a 75 on Tuesday and tied for 62nd overall at 224.

Blue Dragon individual players Addison Alonzo and Finn Nelson had strong tournaments.

After shooting a career-low 69 on Monday, Alonzo closed with back-to-back 73s and tied for 25th at 2-over 215.

Nelson got stronger as the tournament went on. Starting with a 78 in the opening round on Monday, Nelson shot 71 in the second round and closed with a 2-under 69 on Tuesday to tie for 40th at 5-over 218.

The Blue Dragons are back in Texas next week for the Midwest State Fall Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas on Monday and Tuesday.

Dragons tie for 4th at Ryan Palmer Invite

For the second-consecutive week, Hutchinson Community College football players were named Jayhawk Conference players of the week.

The Blue Dragons picked up two of the three weekly conference honor as freshman linebacker Martavius French was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore punter Alfonso Deleon was named the Special Teams’ Player of the Week.

French and Deleon’s performances were main parts of the Blue Dragons’ 24-16 Jayhawk Conference road victory at No. 8 Garden City on Saturday night.

French, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound freshman linebacker from Memphis, Tennessee, played a huge role in the Blue Dragons’ defensive effort against the Broncbusters.

French had a breakout game with a season-high 14 total tackles, including four solo stops. He also had 0.5 quarterback sacks and disrupted the Buster offense on several occasions.

The 14 tackles mark a season high for a Blue Dragon defensive player this season.

Deleon is the second-straight Blue Dragon to earn KJCCC Special Team honors. Last week, kicker C.J. Moya was named KJCCC and NJCAA National Special Teams Player of the Week.

On Saturday, the 5-10, 190-pound sophomore from Shreveport, Louisiana, averaged 40.9 yards per punt on nine punts with four landing inside the 20-yard line. Only three of his punts were returned by Buster players totaling 22 yards.

Pair of Dragons earn KJCCC Weekly honors

Looking for a signature win this season, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team has an opportunity Wednesday night to do just that.

The Blue Dragons (14-9, 5-5 Jayhawk West) play host to the No. 9-ranked Seward County Saints (15-4, 8-2) at 6 p.m.

Hutchinson is currently in sixth place in the Jayhawk West, but is 0.5 games out of fourth place and two games out of third place. Seward County is currently in second place, one full game behind the front-running Butler Grizzlies.

Hutchinson and Seward County met just eight days ago in Liberal. The Saints swept Hutchinson as the Blue Dragon offense sputtered to .033 hitting. Seward County hit .346.

Since that match, though, the Blue Dragons may have found some much-needed momentum.

Hutchinson pulled off a pair of comeback victories on Saturday in Concordia. The Blue Dragons dropped the first two sets to Cloud County, only to rally and defeat the Thunderbirds in five sets, scoring the final six points of a 15-9 fifth-set victory. The Dragons then dropped the first set to Division II, No. 7 Highland and rallied to win the next three sets.

After two-straight weeks on the road, the Blue Dragons start a stretch of four-consecutive Wednesdays with home matches.

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The last time Hutchinson played on the home pitch of the SSC was September 15, a 4-2 loss to the Cowley Tigers, who were in first place in the Jayhawk West at that time.

Now the Blue Dragons play host to another Jayhawk West first-place team in the Cougars, who are 10-1 overall and 7-1 (21 points) in league play. The Cougars and Tigers are tied for first place in the Jayhawk West entering play on Wednesday. Barton has won seven games in a row.

Since the last time the Blue Dragons played at home, they have gone 2-0 and had a game postponed with two bye weeks mixed in. Hutchinson defeated Coffeyville 3-2 and Dodge City 4-2 since the mid-September meeting with Cowley.

Dragons return to SSC Wednesday to face Barton

Kan. — 
The Family Community Theatre’s second show of its 33rd season is the classic comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace. The comedy is on stage at the Flag Theatre beginning Thursday.

"It's the story of the Brewster sisters in a home in Brooklyn who decide to take on a personal charity," said director Ben Jones. "They have gentlemen that come to stay with them as a temporary or permanent boarder. They question them and they find out they have no family or loved ones and as a sign of mercy, they poison them."

American playwright Joseph Kesselring wrote the play in 1939.

"He was a professor at Bethel College, just down the road over here at North Newton," Jones said. "In fact, the house that he modeled his set after is now the president's house at Bethel College."

The Family Children’s Theatre production has a cast of 12. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Flag Theatre at 310 North Main in Hutchinson.

The Family Community Theatre’s second show of its 33rd season is the classic comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace. The comedy is on stage at the Flag Theatre beginning Thursday."It's the story of the Brewster sisters in a home in Brooklyn who decide to take on a personal charity," said director Ben Jones. "They have gentlemen that come to stay with them as a temporary or permanent boarder. They question them and they find out they have no family or loved ones and as a sign of mercy, they poison them."American playwright Joseph Kesselring wrote the play in 1939."He was a professor at Bethel College, just down the road over here at North Newton," Jones said. "In fact, the house that he modeled his set after is now the president's house at Bethel College."The Family Children’s Theatre production has a cast of 12. The 2021 Walk to End Alzheimer's in Hutchinson is Saturday on the campus of Hutchinson Community College.

"We'll actually be at the patios, kind of between Lockman Hall and the tennis courts," said Hillary Steindler-Nolan with the Alzheimer's Association. "We'll be there from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. People can walk whenever they want. We're going to do the Blue Dragon walking trails through campus."

There will be two chances to catch the Promise Garden ceremony.

"We'll have a promise garden ceremony at that kind of patio area at 9:30 a.m. and again at 10 a.m.," Steindler-Nolan said. 

The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s — their personal reasons to end the disease:

PURPLE: I have lost someone to Alzheimer’s or dementia.

YELLOW: I am supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

ORANGE: I support the cause and a vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

"There's over 6 million Americans currently living in the United States with the disease and over 11 million unpaid caregivers," Steindler-Nolan said. "In Kansas, that number's 55,000 living with Alzheimer's and 85,000 unpaid caregivers."

All funds raised through Walk to End Alzheimer's further the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association. The Alzheimer's Association is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. All donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

2021 Walk to End Alzheimer's in Hutchinson Saturday

AMARILLO, Texas – After two up-and-down rounds on Monday, the NJCAA No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College Men’s Golf Team finds itself in fourth place at the West Texas A&amp;M Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational.

The Blue Dragons shot rounds of 3-under 282 and 1-over 285 on Monday to post a 36-hole total of 1-under 567 at the par-71 Amarillo Country Club.

Hutchinson, winners of seven-straight team titles dating back to last season, is nine strokes off the pace of first-place West Texas A&amp;M, which shot an 8-under 276 in the afternoon round to finish the day at 10-under 558. Cameron University is second at 3-under 565. Wayland Baptist University is third at 2-under 566.

Hutchinson was tied with West Texas A&amp;M for the team lead after the opening round.

Region VI rivals Dodge City and Garden City are tied for seventh with Western Texas College at 576.

The Blue Dragons were led by 2021 NJCAA National Champion Ben Partridge in the first round, who tied a career-best score and second-best round in relation to par with a 5-under 66. Partridge had seven birdies and one bogey in the opening round. Hutchinson also counted Dominic Clemons’ even-par 71, Harry Crockett’s 72 and Blake Saffel’s 74.

Crockett shot the low round for Hutchinson in the second round. Crockett had an eagle and four birdies in a round of 69. The Dragons also counted Partridge’s 70 and 73s by Clemons and Cameron Rios-Ceballos

Three Blue Dragon players are in the individual Top 20 after two rounds.

Partridge, who led after 18 holes, is second at 7-under 135, is in second place. He trails West Texas A&amp;M’s Eemeli Jering by one stroke heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Crockett is in a seven-way tie for 12th at 1-under 141.

Blue Dragon individual player Addison Alonzo is tied for 20th at even-par 142. Alonso shot a career-low 69 in the opening round. He started his second round with three birdies in the first six holes, but finished at 2-over 73.

Clemons is tied for 31st at 2-over 144. Saffel is tied for 50th at 6-over 148 with back-to-back rounds of 74. Blue Dragon individual Finn Nelson is tied for 55th at 149 with rounds of 78 and 71. Rios-Ceballos is also in that tie for 55th after rounds of 76 and 73 on Monday.

The Blue Dragons have tee times from 9:20 to 10 a.m. for Tuesday’s final round. The Dragons will be paired with players from Dallas Baptist and Odessa.

Dragons in 4th after 36 holes at Ryan Palmer Classic

With two-straight victories, one over a Top 10 team, the Hutchinson Community College football team has returned to the NJCAA national rankings.

After three weeks out of the rankings, the 2-2 Blue Dragons re-entered the national rankings at No. 13.

Ranked No. 1 in the preseason, the Blue Dragons quickly tumbled out of the national rankings after consecutive losses to start the season to Now-No. 8 Coffeyville and Butler. Since then, Hutchinson has evened its record at 2-2 with a 55-6 win over Fort Scott on September 25 at Gowans Stadium and Saturday’s 24-16 come-from-behind victory at then-No. 8 Garden City.

The 13th-ranked Blue Dragons will play a nationally ranked opponent when No. 3 Independence (5-0) comes to Gowans Stadium for a Noon kickoff on Saturday. Despite a 31-0 win over Fort Scott last Saturday, the Pirates were jumped in the rankings by Jones Community College.

Hutchinson is one of four Jayhawk Conference teams in the rankings or receiving votes this week. Independence is No. 3, Coffeyville is No. 8 and the Blue Dragons are in the rankings. Garden City is still receiving votes.

Snow College is the No. 1-ranked team for the fourth-straight week. The Badgers received 4 of 6 first-place votes. The Top 5 has Snow, Jones, Independence, Iowa Western and Trinity Valley.

Dragons return to national rankings at No. 13

James Paul “Jim” Mullins, 87, of South Hutchinson, died September 28, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin MO.&nbsp; He was born November 11, 1933, in Whitesburg, KY, to Charles and Birdie (Sturgill) Mullins and was raised in a large family.

Jim grew up in the mountains of eastern Kentucky and learned woodsman and farming skills that he never forgot. After high school, he was drafted into the United States Army (“your friends and neighbors have selected you” – Jim could quote the draft board letter almost verbatim). After basic training, he was sent to Camp Hale, CO, for training with the 10th&nbsp;Mountain Division. Upon completion of his ski training, Jim returned to Fort Riley and finished his obligation with the 1st&nbsp;Infantry Division.

While in the Army, Jim met the love of his life, Mary Gay Rector, while she was attending college in Emporia. They were married on April 5, 1958, in Detroit, MI. They shared over 62 years of marriage before her death on December 14, 2020.

Jim and Gay moved to Hutchinson in 1960. Jim completed Barber college in 1960 and began a career cutting hair that spanned over 60 years. Being a barber was his calling and he continued to cut hair until his passing.

Jim was a member of the American Legion, was a Master Mason, and of the Christian faith, attending both Our Lady of Guadalupe and Eastwood Church of Christ when he was able. He was a man of prayer, an avid reader, and an active fan of boxing, football, and basketball. Jim passed his love of the outdoors to his family and his collection of fishing gear is second to none. He loved crappie and walleye fishing, and quail hunting. Jim raised and trained excellent upland bird dogs and was a dog lover to the end.

While Gay was alive, they enjoyed going out to eat together, traveling, and spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His family was everything to him and the love he showed to them is a legacy that will always be remembered.

Jim is survived by: sister, Jewell Ballou (James) of Irvine KY; sons, Steve Mullins (Debbie) of Hutchinson, Eric Mullins (Diana) of South Hutchinson; grandchildren, Matt Mullins (Ashley) of Merriam, Chris Mullins (fiance’ De’Nae Torres) of Hutchinson, Sarah Engel (Brent) of Wichita; great-grandchildren, Jasper and Crew Mullins, Christian James Engel; and several nieces and nephews.

He also will be missed by his good friends, Jerry Josephson, Chet Martin, Willie Cokely, Lee Whithorn, Perry Nolan, and his other breakfast buddies.

Jim was preceded in death by: his loving wife, Gay; his parents; sisters, Belvia, Goldie, Dorothy, and Irene; brothers, Cecil, Leonard, Linville, and Carl Daniel; and his hunting and fishing buddy, John Davis.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, with family present from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.

The service will be livestreamed and the link to view the service will be active on Jim’s obituary on the funeral home website beginning 30 minutes before the service.

Memorials are suggested to Mennonite Friendship Communities or Mercy Hospital Joplin, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Kan. — The Kansas State Fair Foundation announced Monday that Brad Rayl of Buhler, Kan. is the 2021 Wall of Honor inductee. Brad grew up attending the Kansas State Fair, and as a young 4-H’er helped his dad, who was the Kansas State Fair poultry superintendent in the poultry barn. Brad started his 4-H career showing chickens, then moved to exhibiting lambs in the Bison arena. From there he began investing in Suffolk ewes. He built a respected Suffolk herd called Flying R Suffolks. Brad sold his Suffolk herd and used the funds to cover most of his college expenses at Kansas State University.

Brad’s experience with 4-H and the Kansas State Fair were important to his development and he wanted his children, Abby and Parker, to have the same opportunity. Both children exhibited sheep, swine, and cattle. They gravitated to the cattle industry, particularly the breeding side of the business. The first Rayl Angus females were bought from McCurry Angus near Burrton, Kansas in 1997. The Rayl family became very involved in the National Junior Angus Association, where Abby and Parker won many awards. During one National Junior Angus event, Parker and Mark Gardiner visited about breeding show heifers utilizing Gardiner Angus embryos. Today, Rayl Angus is a 100 head cow/calf operation run by Brad and his wife, Jolie. The breeding program consists of artificial insemination of selected embryos which focuses on optimizing genetic traits. The goal at Rayl Angus is to produce breeding stock that are highly accurate in all EPD traits for the commercial cow calf rancher.

In 1995, Brad was asked to be on the Kansas State Fair Board where he served for 21 years. In that time, he was instrumental in lobbying and securing $29 million to renovate and improve the Kansas State Fairgrounds which in large part built the Prairie Pavilion and the Swine, Sheep and Goat Barns being used today.

Brad helped establish the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive and worked with others to set the groundwork to create the spectacular showcase it has become. It is a signature event for 4-H and FFA youth exhibiting livestock at the Kansas State Fair. In addition, he was involved in the formation of the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation, which was established in 2003.  The Foundation also Established the Wall of Honor which inducted its first honorees in 2005.

Professionally, Brad worked in the insurance business, providing property and casualty insurance needs for local businesses, industry leaders, and ag-based operations. Brad was also instrumental in the founding of Kansas Ethanol in 2006, an 80-million-gallon fuel alcohol facility which produces 260,000 tons of distiller grains. Kansas Ethanol purchased and formed Kansas Protein Foods, located in Hutchinson, Kansas. This entity purchases and extrudes soybean flour to make products for the food industry. Between Kansas Ethanol and Kansas Protein Foods, brands including Kansas Kitchen, Kattle Energy, Kinetic Elite, and Rack Elite have been developed and introduced to market.

Brad continues to be active in his local community as well as in statewide organizations. Brad currently serves on boards including Kansas Ethanol, Barkman Honey, Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation, and RCB Bank. Brad hopes the Kansas State Fair is as impactful in others’ lives as it has been for him and his family.

The Wall of Honor was initiated in 2005 by the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation to recognize and honor those individuals who have made or are making a significant difference in the livestock shows at the Kansas State Fair and in agriculture in Kansas. The Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation plays a pivotal role in the success and execution of the renovation and beautification of the Kansas State Fairgrounds. The Kansas State Fair board creates project priorities and works with the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation and their partner organizations to bring private funds to the table for renovations, rebuilds, improvements and beautification of the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The goal at Rayl Angus is to produce breeding stock that are highly accurate in all EPD traits for the commercial cow calf rancher.In 1995, Brad was asked to be on the Kansas State Fair Board where he served for 21 years. In that time, he was instrumental in lobbying and securing $29 million to renovate and improve the Kansas State Fairgrounds which in large part built the Prairie Pavilion and the Swine, Sheep and Goat Barns being used today.Brad helped establish the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive and worked with others to set the groundwork to create the spectacular showcase it has become. It is a signature event for 4-H and FFA youth exhibiting livestock at the Kansas State Fair. In addition, he was involved in the formation of the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation, which was established in 2003. The Foundation also Established the Wall of Honor which inducted its first honorees in 2005.Professionally, Brad worked in the insurance business, providing property and casualty insurance needs for local businesses, industry leaders, and ag-based operations. Brad was also instrumental in the founding of Kansas Ethanol in 2006, an 80-million-gallon fuel alcohol facility which produces 260,000 tons of distiller grains. Kansas Ethanol purchased and formed Kansas Protein Foods, located in Hutchinson, Kansas. This entity purchases and extrudes soybean flour to make products for the food industry. Between Kansas Ethanol and Kansas Protein Foods, brands including Kansas Kitchen, Kattle Energy, Kinetic Elite, and Rack Elite have been developed and introduced to market.Brad continues to be active in his local community as well as in statewide organizations. Brad currently serves on boards including Kansas Ethanol, Barkman Honey, Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation, and RCB Bank. Brad hopes the Kansas State Fair is as impactful in others’ lives as it has been for him and his family.The Wall of Honor was initiated in 2005 by the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation to recognize and honor those individuals who have made or are making a significant difference in the livestock shows at the Kansas State Fair and in agriculture in Kansas. The Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation plays a pivotal role in the success and execution of the renovation and beautification of the Kansas State Fairgrounds. The Kansas State Fair board creates project priorities and works with the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation and their partner organizations to bring private funds to the table for renovations, rebuilds, improvements and beautification of the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

Rayl is 2021 Wall of Honor Inductee

CONCORDIA – It was a comeback kind of Saturday for the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team.

First, the Blue Dragons rallied from down two sets to defeat Cloud County in five sets (21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 15-9) in a Jayhawk West contest. Hutchinson had to turn right around and lost first set to Highland, but won the next three in a 14-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15 victory over the Division II, No. 7-ranked Scotties at Arley Bryant Gym in Concordia.

The Blue Dragon improved to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson plays host to No. 10-ranked Seward County at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Cloud County is now 11-11 and 1-8. Highland is now 20-3.

The comeback against Cloud County was the first time that Hutchinson has rallied to win a match after trailing 2-0 since doing so at Seward County on October 7, 2016 in Liberal. It’s the sixth time ever for the Dragons to comeback from an 0-2 deficit.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit by the Thunderbirds .221-.103 in the opening two sets. Hutchinson hit .244 in the final three sets. Cloud County hit .134, including a negative .002 in the fourth and fifth sets.

The Blue Dragons are now 4-0 in five-set matches this season and 2-0 in five setters against Cloud County.

The four-set win over Highland was the first time that the Blue Dragons and Scotties have played since October 20, 2001. The Dragons hit a negative .077 in the first set against Highland, but improved to .232 over the final three sets.

After dropping two tight sets, the Blue Dragons trailed the Thunderbirds 6-2 early and 22-20 late in the third set. Hutch took a 23-22 lead on a Morgan Harvey kill, double block by Blondie Penaflor and Chloe Conway and a Melina Christodoulou service ace. Tied at 23, a pair of Penaflor kills extended the match with a 25-23 Dragon win.

Hutchinson took an early 7-3 lead in the fourth set and extended it to 13-6 on an Aubreigh Haxtun solo block. The Dragons had two eight-point leads in the fourth set as the defense held Cloud County to .029. The Dragons pushed the match to a fifth set on a Kristina Head back-row kill.

The Blue Dragons opened the fifth set with a 6-1 run, but Cloud County scored 8 of the next 10 to take a 9-8 lead. A Penaflor kill tied the set at nine and started a decisive 7-0 Andrea Serrano service run. Serrano had two aces, the Dragons had two blocks and Penaflor had two kills to complete the comeback.

Penaflor had a season-high 20 kills with .326 hitting on 43 attacks to lead the Blue Dragons. Christodoulou was next with 11 kills on .209 hitting. Harvey and Head had eight kills each and the Blue Dragons hit .182 for the match.

Hutchinson had 12 team blocks, the second most blocks in a single match this season. Conway had a team-high six blocks. Head and Harvey had four blocks each.

The Blue Dragons had 54 total digs led by libero Zoe Schmidt’s 16 digs. Head had 10 digs and Harvey had nine digs.

Serrano had 29 assists and freshman McKinley Johnson had 19 assists.

Natasha Dooley had 15 kills and Geradyn Palacios and Kenzie Cooper had 12 kills each to lead Cloud County, which hit .172 for the match.

After hitting a negative .077 in a decisive first-set Highland win, the Blue Dragons regained their offensive touch with .429 hitting in the second set, .139 in the third set and .393 in a dominant fourth set.

Christodoulou hammered home 12 kills on a season-high .474 hitting with three block assists to lead the Blue Dragons.

Sophie Connor had nine kills and Head had eight kills for the Dragons, who hit .232 against the Scotties.

Serrano had 21 assists and five digs. Johnson had 17 assists.

The Blue Dragons had 10 or more services aces for the ninth time this season with 15 aces. Head had five aces, Johnson had four and Connor had three aces.

Schmidt had 13 digs to lead the Dragons defensively.

McKenna Rhodes and Jenna Pfau had 13 kills each to lead Highland.

Dragons rally twice for two Saturday wins

COLBY – Andrew Holt, Camilo Turin and Aaron Geissinger all posted career-low 8,000-meter times as the Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Region VI Preview on Saturday at Meadow Lake Golf Course in Colby.

The Blue Dragons and five other Region VI teams were getting an early look at the same course that will be the site of the 2021 Region VI Cross Country Championships, which will be hosted by Colby Community College on Saturday, 30.

Hutchinson had three others finish in the Top 20 in a fourth-place team showing. The Blue Dragons had 82 points, the third-highest placing Region VI team in the field. Colorado College won the team championship with 42 points. Northwest Tech was second with 49 points. Garden City had 77 points, then the Blue Dragons and Dodge City with 108 team points.

Freshman Collin Oswalt was the only Blue Dragon to finish in the Top 10, crossing the finish line 10th in a time of 26:02.62.

Holt posted his second-consecutive PR at 8,000 meters with a 16th-place showing in a time of 26:44.60.

Turin had his first Top 20 finish with a 19th-place showing in a season-best time of 27:06.71.

Geissinger also turned in a second-straight PR with a time of 28:05.80. He finished 31st overall.

Freshman Carsyn Turpin placed 33rd in a time of 28:09.68.

The Blue Dragons will run in back-to-back weeks for the only time this season. Hutchinson travels to the Fort Hays State Tiger open next Saturday in Victoria, Kansas.

Three Dragons post PRs in Region VI preview

COLBY – Getting an early look at the Region VI Championship course on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country team finished third in the Region VI Preview at Meadow Lake Golf Course in Colby.

Led by sophomore All-American Louise Cocking, the Blue Dragons finished with 82 team points. Colorado College won the team title with 42 points, edging Region VI foe Northwest Tech with 49 points.

Cocking posted her third Top 5 finish of the season and seventh of her career with a fifth-place performance in a time of 19:28.21. Cocking was the second-highest Region VI runner to finish behind Colby’s Regan Hogsden (19:25.79). Colorado College’s Elliot Singer won the women’s individual race with a time of 18:19.99.

Freshman Anastasia Mayer was the second Blue Dragon to place, crossing the finish line in 21:11.59 over the 5K course. Sophomore Noelle Higaldo placed 34th in 21:47.68. Freshman Michele Gage finished 38th in a time of 22:13.34. Freshman Sydney Grauer was 40th in a time of 22:24.05.

Sophomore Izzy Wheeler placed 44th in 23:01.67. Sophomore Jurney Yung placed 46th in 23:51.51.

Rosemari Elaine "Rose" Horn, 63, of Lincoln, KS, passed away at 10:34 p.m., Friday, October 1st, while in the company of her children, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. Rose was born in Landstuhl-Pfalz, Germany on November 17, 1957, a daughter of Shirley Mae (Burchfield) and Frank Edmund Wade. Rose attended Halstead Elementary in Copperas Cove, Texas, and graduated from Copperas Cove High School, in 1976. She then attended Brown Mackie Business College where she received her degree in Business and Computer Science. She then attended Baylor University, Waco, Texas where she received her Masters Degree in Accounting. She was a member of First Baptist Church Coppersas Cove, TX, where she was raised and Baptized. Through the years, Rose was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. She later worked as a bartender for several different places in Salina and McPherson, worked for Nations Pizza, Tony's Pizza, and Websco as a manager, all of Salina. She also worked for Cartridge King as the Distribution Supervisor, Van Guard Plastics as a Executive Assistant, Dillon's Grocery as overnight stocking. Rose was a volunteer for Relay For Life. She enjoyed her family and friends, riding motorcycles, loved all animals, was a veracious reader, and loved going to concerts. She is survived by her children, Michelle Hill, of Lincoln, Kansas and Michael Johannes and his wife Michelle, of McPherson, Kansas; her twin brother Robert Wade and wife Karen, of Copperas Cove, Texas; her seven grandchildren, Taylor Pifer and husband Tyler, Ashley Hederick, Jose Torres, Jonathan Torres, Cheyenne Jenkins, Tayln Huff, and Ashlyn Johannes; her two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Anthony, and Cali Pifer. other relatives and a host of friends. Valetta Jewell “Vickie” Sharp, 95, died September 30, 2021, at Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance, Fort Worth, TX.  She was born May 27, 1926, on the family farm at Sylvia, to Herman and Laura (Lang) Moeckel.

Vickie graduated from Sylvia Rural High School in 1944, and Emporia State Teacher’s College in 1948.   She loved farm life, wheat harvest.  Vickie worked as a librarian in a number of states, and was the original librarian for the Johnson County Library.  She retired from the Army Corps of Engineers after 25 years of service.

On July 18, 1948, she married Claude Eugene Sharp, in Sylvia.  He died February 10, 2014, after sharing almost 66 years of marriage.

Vickie is survived by:  two loving children and their families, and a host of extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two siblings.

Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W 4th Ave, Hutchinson.  Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials to a local animal shelter, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.
