John Charles Summervill, 89, died June 17, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;He was born April 9, 1936, in Hillsboro, to Wesley and Mildred (Bredemeier) Summervill. &nbsp;

John graduated Marion High School in 1953. &nbsp;He served in the United Sates Army from 1957 to 1959. &nbsp;John attended Emporia State Teachers College where he received his bachelor degree in 1962 and his master degree in 1963, both in education. &nbsp;He was a very proud Hornet! &nbsp;His teaching career began in Strong City, where he taught 7th grade. &nbsp;John then moved to Hutchinson and worked primarily for USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson. &nbsp;He started out teaching at South Hutchinson Grade School before moving to Nickerson High School where he taught history and government. &nbsp;In addition, John served as the Athletic Director for USD 309 and coached girls’ basketball and softball. John also officiated basketball, baseball and football games. &nbsp;Never one for rest and relaxation, he worked in the summers for the Soil Conservation Service and mowed lawns for over 50 years.&nbsp;

John had a passion for education and encouraging students and athletes to work hard and strive for excellence. As a result, he received many awards throughout his teaching career. John was inducted into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame and the Teacher Hall of Fame. &nbsp;In addition, he was named Athletic Director of the Year.

Giving back and supporting the community, was an integral part of John’s life. &nbsp;He was involved in NEA, KNEA, Kansas College Officials Association, and the ESU Alumni Association. &nbsp;John also served as a trustee for the ESU Foundation. In addition, he was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, where he participated in the Methodist Men, Doers Sunday School Class, and served as a Sunday morning usher. &nbsp;John was a fixture at church, always volunteering “behind the scenes”.&nbsp;

John was dedicated to his church, education, and the community, but his greatest love and dedication was his family. &nbsp;He was a devoted and proud husband, father, and grandfather, always supporting his family with unconditional love.&nbsp;

While at Emporia State, he met his future bride, Barbara Ann Cooper. &nbsp;They were married July 1, 1961, in Cheney.&nbsp;

John is survived by: &nbsp;his wife of almost 64 years, Barbara of Hutchinson; children, Rodney Summervill (Carol), and Jill Goertzen (Russ), all of Buhler; grandsons, Jacob Goertzen of Buhler, Joshua Goertzen of Manhattan, Justin Goertzen, and Jesse Goertzen, all of Buhler; step-grandchildren, Megan Anger, Ethan Caster, and Dane Caster; sister, Sue Navrat (Dennis); sisters-in-law, Marge Summervill and Val Summervill; and numerous nieces, nephews and former students.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Marion Summervill and Mick Summervill.

Celebration of Life Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. &nbsp;Private inurnment will take place in the church columbarium. &nbsp;Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary and from 9:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Marshall Promotes “Big, Beautiful Bill” with Promise of Tax Relief and Economic Growth

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — U.S. Senator Roger Marshall joined the BW Morning Show this week to discuss what he calls the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” a sweeping tax and spending reform package he says could reshape the American economy and benefit Kansans across income levels.

At the heart of the legislation, Marshall said, is a key promise: “It will prevent the largest tax increase in American history.” He claimed the bill would allow the average Kansas family to keep up to $1,000 more per month by extending and making permanent tax cuts first introduced in 2017 under the Trump administration.

Tax Relief for Families, Seniors, and Small Businesses

Marshall said the legislation includes provisions to:

“There’s something in this bill for everyone,” Marshall said. “Hard-working families, farmers, seniors, small business owners—this helps them all.”

He added that small business incentives such as permanent deductions for research and development, capital expenses, and interest will give entrepreneurs long-term financial stability.

The bill also contains expansions for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), allowing individuals to use pre-tax dollars for a broader range of health-related expenses—including insurance, prescriptions, and primary care memberships.

On education, Marshall said the bill improves flexibility in Pell Grants, especially for students attending technical colleges or non-traditional programs, and expands 529 savings account benefits.

“These changes reflect the needs of today’s workforce,” he said, emphasizing support for short-term certification programs over four-year degrees alone.

Beyond taxes and education, the bill includes $83 billion in additional funding for veterans and guarantees the largest military pay raise in U.S. history over the next four years.

Border security is another key component, according to Marshall, who said the bill would fund approximately 2,000 miles of physical barriers on the southern U.S. border and increase support for Border Patrol efforts, including deployment of military personnel from Fort Riley.

Medicaid Work Requirements and Spending Cuts

Marshall stressed that the bill does not cut Medicare or Medicaid services for seniors or people with disabilities, but does introduce work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents.

“There are 7 million healthy, working-age American men not working right now,” he said. “This bill encourages work—because a job is the best safety net we have.”

The bill is also expected to reduce federal spending by nearly $2 trillion, which Marshall said is a step toward addressing the national debt.

The final text of the bill is expected to be released within days, with a Senate vote likely the following week. Marshall said the goal is to pass the bill and have it signed into law by July 4.

“It sounds ambitious,” he acknowledged, “but we’re on Trump time now. The President wants this done, and this is his signature legislation. It’s the most impactful bill since Ronald Reagan.”

Marshall closed by calling the legislation a “launch pad” for future reforms, citing trade, deregulation, and manufacturing growth as next steps in rebuilding the economy.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “But it’s the biggest first step we could take.”

McPherson High School is proud to announce Stephanie Patterson as the new head coach of the Bullpup Softball Program. Coach Patterson brings a strong background as both a player and coach and was most recently a varsity assistant on the undefeated 2025 Bullpup team that captured the 4A State Championship.

Originally from the Hutchinson area, Patterson is a graduate of Buhler High School (2011) and a former standout at Kansas Wesleyan University, where she played four years and was part of two conference championship teams. Her teams also earned a top-25 national ranking in NAIA.

Patterson has five years of coaching experience at the high school level. She served as an assistant coach at Buhler High School for four seasons before joining the Bullpup staff in 2025. Her dedication, energy, and deep understanding of the game have made an immediate impact on the McPherson program.

“MHS is excited to name Stephanie Patterson as the next head coach of the Bullpup Softball Program,” said Athletic Director Shane Backhus. “Her experience with our program, as well as the high school program at Buhler, has provided her with a strong coaching foundation that we are confident can lead our program for years to come.”

Coach Patterson lives a busy life as a mother of two—Quinn and Maverick Copeland—and can often be found coaching her daughter’s teams or cheering on her son from the stands. She is passionate about the game of softball and is eager to lead the next chapter of success for McPherson Softball.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Rusty Hilst, a revered teacher, broadcaster, and golfer who became a cornerstone of the Hutchinson community for more than five decades, has died after a long battle with ALS. He was 82.

Best known for his steady voice on the radio and his steady hand in the classroom, Hilst dedicated his life to education, athletics, and storytelling, leaving behind a legacy etched into generations of Hutchinson lives.&nbsp;

“Rusty was the most prepared person I’ve ever met when it came to his sports broadcasts,” said longtime broadcast partner Rob Dreher. “We were super early to any broadcast we ever did. I’ll miss the away games and car rides the most.”&nbsp;

Born on Dec. 29, 1942, in Pratt, Hilst overcame early adversity after contracting rheumatic fever in second grade. Confined to bed for eight months, he taught himself to read, a foreshadowing of the intellect and resilience that would define his life.&nbsp;

His family moved to Hutchinson in 1957, where Hilst soon became a standout golfer at Hutchinson High School. He helped lead the Salthawks to a 4-man state title in 1960 and remained deeply tied to local golf throughout his life, winning city championships and later earning a place in the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame in 2002.&nbsp;

After earning degrees from Valparaiso University and the University of Kansas, Hilst planned to pursue a PhD until a last-minute vacancy at Hutch High brought him home. What started as a one-semester teaching stint turned into a 53-year career shaping minds and mentoring students as beloved math teacher and golf coach. He taught calculus, trigonometry and college algebra and became chair of the HHS Math Department in 1978.&nbsp;

In 1969, Hilst added another title to his résumé: broadcaster. He began calling games for KWHK Radio, then joined KWBW in 1980, launching a decades-long career covering Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College, and the NJCAA Tournament. He served as sports director at Eagle Communications from 1995 to 2019 and earned numerous honors, including the Hod Humiston Award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and Kansas Sportscaster of the Year in 2004.&nbsp;

“For 22 seasons, from September 1998 to March 2019, Rusty Hilst and I shared the road, the press box, and countless memories,” said former broadcast partner Glen Grunwald. “He was a dear friend, a mentor, and truly one of a kind.”&nbsp;

Grunwald described Hilst as the consummate professional, calm, thorough, and generous with his time. “Rusty had a passion for sports, but even more so for the people around him. He poured his heart into everything he did,” Grunwald said.&nbsp;

Grunwald, who partnered with Hilst for more than two decades on Salthawk broadcasts, remembered a man who was more than just a colleague, he was a friend and mentor whose wisdom carried into everyday life.&nbsp;

“A few days before Christmas 2022, Rusty told me he had been diagnosed with ALS,” longtime broadcast partner Dan Naccarato said. “He faced the most difficult ordeal imaginable with dignity, courage, wisdom and humor.”&nbsp;

In 2014, Hilst became the first non-player, coach or administrator inducted into the Hutchinson Community College Quarterback Club Hall of Fame, a recognition of his unmatched service to Blue Dragon athletics through broadcasting and advocacy.&nbsp;

In 2023, Hilst received one of the state’s highest honors in education when he was inducted into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame, a tribute to his extraordinary impact in the classroom over five decades.&nbsp;

Later that year, Hutchinson High School dedicated “Rusty’s Room,” a calm space for students to reset emotionally and mentally, fittingly located in the same hallway where he taught math for most of his 54-year teaching career.&nbsp;

“When I changed careers from the corporate world to teaching at HutchCC, Rusty was one of the first mentors I called,” Naccarato added. “His advice, to trust your intuition, build relationships with students, and learn to teach without using textbooks, still echoes in my mind today.”&nbsp;

From his early days teaching himself to read, to the late nights preparing for radio broadcasts, Hilst’s life was defined by a love for learning, a gift for connection, and a voice that guided, and comforted, thousands.&nbsp;

He was 82.Best known for his steady voice on the radio and his steady hand in the classroom, Hilst dedicated his life to education, athletics, and storytelling, leaving behind a legacy etched into generations of Hutchinson lives.&nbsp;“Rusty was the most prepared person I’ve ever met when it came to his sports broadcasts,” said longtime broadcast partner Rob Dreher. “We were super early to any broadcast we ever did. I’ll miss the away games and car rides the most.”&nbsp;Born on Dec. 29, 1942, in Pratt, Hilst overcame early adversity after contracting rheumatic fever in second grade. Confined to bed for eight months, he taught himself to read, a foreshadowing of the intellect and resilience that would define his life.&nbsp;His family moved to Hutchinson in 1957, where Hilst soon became a standout golfer at Hutchinson High School. He helped lead the Salthawks to a 4-man state title in 1960 and remained deeply tied to local golf throughout his life, winning city championships and later earning a place in the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame in 2002.&nbsp;After earning degrees from Valparaiso University and the University of Kansas, Hilst planned to pursue a PhD until a last-minute vacancy at Hutch High brought him home. What started as a one-semester teaching stint turned into a 53-year career shaping minds and mentoring students as beloved math teacher and golf coach. He taught calculus, trigonometry and college algebra and became chair of the HHS Math Department in 1978.&nbsp;In 1969, Hilst added another title to his résumé: broadcaster. He began calling games for KWHK Radio, then joined KWBW in 1980, launching a decades-long career covering Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College, and the NJCAA Tournament. He served as sports director at Eagle Communications from 1995 to 2019 and earned numerous honors, including the Hod Humiston Award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and Kansas Sportscaster of the Year in 2004.&nbsp;“For 22 seasons, from September 1998 to March 2019, Rusty Hilst and I shared the road, the press box, and countless memories,” said former broadcast partner Glen Grunwald. “He was a dear friend, a mentor, and truly one of a kind.”&nbsp;Grunwald described Hilst as the consummate professional, calm, thorough, and generous with his time. “Rusty had a passion for sports, but even more so for the people around him. The Monarchs (10-2) will look to bounce back tonight as they host the Junction City Brigade in a non-league matchup at Hobart-Detter Field in Carey Park. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for the Little Arkansas River at Alta Mills, which is expected to crest at 24.3 feet Thursday morning—above the 22-foot flood stage. Minor flooding is forecast, with potential overflow across Highway 50 near River Park Road, south of the gage site. Floodwaters may extend about 500 feet wide in some areas, inundating cropland and low-lying fields.

In Reno and Rice counties, a Flood Warning also remains in effect for Cow Creek near Hutchinson, where moderate flooding is forecast. The creek is expected to rise above flood stage Thursday morning and crest at 10.8 feet by early Friday afternoon. Impacted areas may include the intersection of 56th Avenue and Pennington Road, as well as Wilson Road between 82nd and 95th Avenues.

Meanwhile, flash flooding is ongoing or expected in parts of Kingman, Reno, and Rice counties. Radar estimates show 5 to 8 inches of rainfall in some areas overnight, and additional rainfall is anticipated this morning. Communities including Lyons, Sterling, Pretty Prairie, Norwich, Haven, and parts of Cheney Lake are among the areas facing flooding.

A Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. today for a large portion of central, south central, and southeast Kansas, covering more than 20 counties, including Reno, Rice, Harvey and Kingman counties. Officials warn that excessive runoff from continued rainfall could result in flooding of rivers, streams, and low-lying areas.

Residents are urged to avoid flood-prone areas and not to drive through water-covered roads. According to the National Weather Service, just two feet of moving water can carry most vehicles away.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels and weather conditions and will issue updates as necessary. The next flood statement is scheduled for 1:45 p.m.

Hutchinson is once again trading in its everyday identity for a cape and glasses as it transforms into “Smallville,” the fictional hometown of Superman, during the 12th annual Smallville Festival, set for June 19-21.

The three-day celebration, coordinated by Hutch Rec in partnership with the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Strataca, Cosmosphere, Hutchinson Zoo, NaCl Comic Cons LLC, and Downtown Hutchinson, will bring superhero-sized fun to every corner of the city.

“Smallville Festival is all about embracing what makes small-town life heroic,” said organizers. “Tradition, grit, pride in your community — and a little fun.”

Festivities kick off Thursday evening with Third Thursday activities downtown from 6–8 p.m., including a Kids Costume Contest at DCI Park and a performance by the Hutchinson Municipal Band accompanied by aerialist performers at George Pyle Park. At dusk, attendees can enjoy Batman Begins under the stars to start the DC Movie Marathon.

Friday begins with a Hometown Heroes Luncheon at noon in front of the Reno County Museum, celebrating local everyday heroes. Third Thursday to kick off Smallville Festival 

Strong overnight storms packing winds nearing 100 miles per hour swept through south-central Kansas early Tuesday morning, leaving widespread damage and thousands without power.

As of 10 a.m., Evergy reported approximately 1,281 customers in the Hutchinson area were without electricity, while a total of 30,000 customers across the utility's southern service area remain affected. Wichita is reported to have suffered the heaviest impacts.

In a statement, Evergy said crews are working throughout the day to assess storm damage and begin restoring power. “Estimated restoration times are currently delayed while assessments continue,” the company said, urging residents to avoid downed power lines and report them immediately by calling 911.

Their day began with a structure fire in the 2800 block of Pama Lou Avenue, where firefighters battled not only flames but also wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour and heavy rainfall.

Around 8 a.m., crews responded to a gas leak in the 2500 block of Briarwood Lane after a large tree fell on a gas meter. The home was evacuated, and Kansas Gas Service quickly shut off the gas supply. 

The Hutchinson Regional Airport recorded a peak wind gust of 89 mph shortly before 4 a.m., part of the larger storm system that downed tree limbs, damaged structures, and triggered scattered outages across Reno County.

Authorities urge residents to check on neighbors, remain clear of hazardous areas, and track outage updates or report issues via Evergy’s outage map or mobile app.

These tasks must be within the nurses? scope of practice depending on whether he/she is an LPN or an RN. GENERAL DUTIES include, but are not limited to: Interpret the individualized plan of care for each resident to other members of the team. Supervise CNA's and CMA's in providing quality, personalized care for each resident in assigned area. Together with CMA or another professional nurse, complete count of restricted drugs as necessary. Responsible for admission nursing assessments of residents, transfer sheets and discharge instruction sheets for those leaving the facility. Complete discharge summary upon discharge of a resident. Coordinate with other team members, departments, unit coordinators, and physician to insure successful transfer of residents. Provide a report of the pertinent information regarding happenings to the residents assigned to their team for new team members coming on duty. Together with unit coordinator, assure that the resident's physician is notified of changes in condition and that the physician's plan of care is carried out. Attend Care Planning sessions for assigned residents when possible. Complete documentation on resident's chart as applicable: document resident response and outcomes to the plan of care. Initiate appropriate action as resident needs arise. Work with and cooperate with facility consultants and implement changes as authorized by DON. Ensure all procedures for administration, storage, ordering, disposal, control of medications and supplies are followed by personnel. Demonstrate safety and cost effectiveness in the delivery of care according to standards/policies/procedures/regulations. Practice universal precautions and proper disposal of infectious waste at all times. Perform TB testing as needed for residents. Perform TB testing to team members as directed by Home Health Coordinator. Report incidents/accidents and exposures according to policy. Assist in identifying safety hazards and emergency situations and initiate immediate action as needed. Respond to emergency calls throughout the Wesley Towers? complex as assigned. Assist residents with transfers, promote ambulation and exercises, transport residents as needed and as designated on resident Plan of Care using gait belts, proper transfer techniques and lifts per facility policy and procedure. Use and operate equipment in a safe manner. Report unsafe or defective equipment. Follow all safety precautions. Note safety hazards and report/correct them immediately. Assist in the nursing process as requested by the DON and UCC and according to licensure by the State. Assist in the continuous service improvement process as requested by DON, UCC or CSI committee. Is aware of location/content of all standards/policy/procedure manuals, safety data sheets, and how to use them. The Hutchinson Fire Department was dispatched at 4:01 a.m. and arrived to find flames coming from the back of the home. Firefighters launched an aggressive attack in gusts reaching 60 mph, bringing the blaze under control in a short period.

The home was unoccupied at the time, but about one-third of the structure sustained heavy fire damage. Crews remained on scene to extinguish hot spots, particularly in the attic.

One firefighter suffered a hand injury while fighting the fire. The cause has been determined to be electrical.

The Hutchinson Fire Department thanked several agencies for their assistance, including Hutchinson/Reno County Emergency Communications, the Hutchinson Police Department, Reno County EMS, Kansas Gas, Evergy, and 1-800-BOARDUP.

Early morning fire damages Hutchinson home; firefighter injured

A mother in Moundridge is seeking change after her son was injured in&nbsp;a crash that killed two other people. It happened Thursday night just west of Moundridge at the intersection of Old Highway 81 and Arrowhead Road.&nbsp;

We spoke with the mother of the 19-year-old man injured in Thursday’s crash about what she says needs to happen to make the intersection safer.&nbsp;

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office said a Toyota Corolla driven by 63-year-old Danny Health, of Hutchinson, was stopped at the intersection. In the passenger seat was 30-year-old Mariah Lyddane, also of Hutchinson. The sheriff’s office said the crash happened when Heath pulled out in front of Kaleb’s pickup.&nbsp;

Lyddane died at the scene. Heath died Friday morning in the hospital.&nbsp;

Nelson tells us that it is a busy intersection. “So one way will take you to McPherson. The opposite direction takes you to Heston. And if you go straight from Moundridge, you can get to Inman and Hutchison. So like, if I want to go to Hutch that's the way that I take. If I want to go to Inman, I take that route too, but I don't typically take it myself to go to Heston or McPherson. I prefer the interstate.” &nbsp;

She says that it's not the first fatality. &nbsp;“Um, too many people have died there. In 2016 of a nine-year-old boy named Maddox died there. Same type of situation”&nbsp;

Nelson added, “Yes, per my understanding, it's been multiple fatalities.”&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.change.org/p/improve-safety-at-us-hwy-81-arrowhead-intersection?source_location=search" target="_blank">Nelson has started an online petition to advocate for change in hopes that further tragedy can be prevented.</a>&nbsp;

She said it’s also a problem for surrounding communities.&nbsp;

“No more people should have to lose their lives because they are commuting between communities,” Nelson said.&nbsp;

Her online petition elaborates on the concerns:

“This devastating event is not isolated. This dangerous intersection has been a known hazard for some time.  The intersection’s design and its geographic positioning create poor visibility and unexpected hazards, increasing the risk of accidents like the one that will change our lives forever. Too many families have suffered needless loss because of insufficient infrastructure.  According to local traffic reports and resident testimonies, there have been numerous accidents and close calls at this very spot. It's not just a crossing; it's a risk that we all face every time we drive through this area. Statistics show that intersections account for a high number of traffic injuries and fatalities, and without intervention, this treacherous spot becomes a continued hazard.”&nbsp;

When we asked about Kaleb, Nelson tells us, “Obviously, he could be doing better. He's struggling. Even though he's 19, and the law states, states he's an adult, he's still a teenager and still a kid, in my opinion,”&nbsp;

It's definitely going to be a long road.&nbsp;

Nelson adds that Kaleb definitely has a lot of pain and grief and even some guilt for what happened. It's been a rough couple of days for all of us.&nbsp;

Hutch Post has reached out to the McPherson County Sheriff’s office and the Kansas Highway Patrol for statistics about this intersection. We will let you know what we find out. &nbsp;

Moundridge mother calls for safety changes after deadly crash

DODGE CITY, Kan. — The 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl, an annual East vs. West high school football all-star game that showcases the state’s top senior talent, will kick off Saturday at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City. The game returns to Dodge City for the first time since 2019, bringing with it a full week of events that support the mission of <a href="https://www.shrinerschildrens.org/en/about">Shriners Children’s</a>.

More than just a football game, the Kansas Shrine Bowl represents a statewide philanthropic effort. Since its inception in 1974, the Shrine Bowl of Kansas, Inc. has raised nearly $4 million for Shriners Children’s, a world-renowned nonprofit healthcare system specializing in pediatric specialty care regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

Shriners Children's is headquartered in Tampa, Florida, with its closest hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, which specializes in orthopaedics.

The West squad includes several local standouts: Terrell King (Hutchinson), Owen Schmidt (Pratt), Henry Hecox (Moundridge), Landon Harp and Cooper Marx (Andale), Catch Delaney (McPherson), Karter Gonzalez (Hesston), Connor Herman (Halstead), and Bodey Redenbaugh (Buhler). Hutchinson’s Mike Vernon and Hesston’s Tyson Bauerle will serve as assistant coaches for the West. The West team is currently holding its camp at Hutchinson Community College.

Fans can listen to the broadcast on a statewide Eagle Media network, including the flagship station, <a href="https://streamdb5web.securenetsystems.net/v5/KHUT">Country 102.9-FM</a> KHUT in Hutchinson, as well as affiliate stations in Great Bend (KVGB-FM), Hays (KKQY-FM), Salina (KINA-AM/FM), Junction City (KJCK-AM/FM), Manhattan (KQLA), plus out-of-network stations in Coffeyville (KGGF) and Beloit (KVSV-AM/FM).

Each year, more than 400 seniors from all classifications, from six-man to Class 6A, are nominated by their coaches. From there, a selection committee comprised of media members and Shrine Bowl coaches narrows the field to 88 players, 44 on each side.

“It’s a tough roster to make,” said Brice Kesler, executive director of the Kansas Shrine Bowl. “Once they’re nominated, media across the state vote, and our coaches from each classification help select two players each. It’s all structured to ensure statewide representation, both geographically and across school sizes.”

Strict rules are in place, as no more than two players from the same school, and no more than three schools represented twice. If a selected player declines, alternates from the nomination pool are brought in, often relaxing the original restrictions.

“We aim to spread the opportunity around,” Kesler said. “It’s about giving communities across Kansas a chance to celebrate their student-athletes while also contributing to a greater cause.”

Among the most meaningful events of Shrine Bowl week is the Hospital Experience, a series of sessions where players, cheerleaders, and band members meet Shriners Children’s patient ambassadors.

“This is the heart of the week,” Kesler said. “These ambassadors, from toddlers to young adults, share their journeys with our athletes. Many have overcome challenges from scoliosis to amputations and burns. They help participants understand what resilience truly looks like.”

The goal, Kesler said, is more than awareness.

“They show our athletes that a so-called disability can be turned into a superpower,” he said. “You can’t walk away from that unchanged.”

The Kansas Shrine Bowl also hosts the Kansas Masonic All-State Marching Band Camp and All-Star Cheer Camp, giving nearly 400 students the chance to participate in the weekend's festivities.

Since its inception, the Shrine Bowl has been played in nearly every corner of Kansas, from Lawrence to Hays and Pittsburg to Hutchinson. As of 2024, the West leads the series 31-18-2.

But the scoreboard is only a small part of the story.

“We want to involve as many communities as possible,” Kesler said. “That increases fundraising reach and also builds awareness. Families might not know that Shriners Children’s exists or that help is available. We want them to know.”

Corporate sponsors and donors will be recognized at halftime, as will community partners who help make the game a reality each year.

“There’s so many people involved behind the scenes,” Kesler said. “Whether it’s financial support, volunteer hours, or helping spread the word, it all makes a difference.”

Kickoff for the 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday in Dodge City.

Firework sales in Kansas are set to look a little different this year after the Kansas Legislature approved changes to state regulations during its most recent session.

The most notable adjustment affects seasonal firework vendors. Under the new rules, temporary tent sales are now permitted from June 20 through July 8. This expands the previous window and gives vendors additional days to operate within Hutchinson and other communities across the state. As a result, local residents can expect to see tent setups begin appearing around town in the coming days.

In a move aimed at increasing consumer access and supporting businesses, the legislature also authorized year-round firework sales from permanent buildings statewide. This marks a significant change from past policy, which limited sales largely to the summer holiday season.

Despite these changes, the usage dates for fireworks in Hutchinson remain the same. Residents may legally discharge fireworks only between June 30 and July 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day.

City officials remind residents to follow all safety guidelines and be respectful of neighbors during the permitted period of use.

Fireworks sales set to begin soon 

Marion Ellis Heim, 87, died June 13, 2025, at Good Samaritan Society- Hutchinson Village. He was born October 9, 1937, to Robert Henry and Ina (Borders) Heim. In 1961, he married Donna Kay Brack in Hutchinson. They later divorced but remained friends.

Marion was a man with many interests. He earned a Bachelor of Education degree through Kansas State University and Emporia State University. For many years he was a teacher, spending most of that time working for USD #444 (Little River-Windom). He enjoyed teaching middle school and is remembered fondly by his former students. After more than two decades in education, he retired. But he did not slow down.&nbsp;

Marion always helped manage his parent’s farm and later built a cozy log cabin on the property so that he could farm full-time. He could grow just about anything, and people enjoyed buying the corn, tomatoes, and watermelon that came from the farm. Marion also had a way with animals. Marion might have been a familiar face to anyone who attended the Kansas State Fair. For more than 40 years he was a fixture in the 4-H building, supervising and maintaining exhibits and competitions.&nbsp;

Sports were a constant in his life. Marion always bought season tickets for Hutchinson Community College Basketball, he loved attending Blue Dragons games with friends, and spent years running the concessions for the Sports Arena. If he knew a former student was playing in a tournament, he made a point to show his support.

Undoubtedly, Marion is known to most as Coach Heim. It would be impossible to name all of the teams he formed over the decades, and just as impossible to name all of the players he coached. There were several girls' and women's softball teams (through the 70s and beyond) and then basketball teams (in his later years). He coached multiple teams to state, regional, and a few times, even national championships. He was fiercely proud of his players, his teams, and his own accomplishments as Coach Heim.

Marion is survived by his children, Tamyra Heim of Lawrence, KS, and Scott Heim of Boston, MA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother (Joe Henry), and his ex-wife, Donna.&nbsp;

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Inman North Cemetery, Inman. Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2025, with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

 </figure>Marion Ellis Heim, 87, died June 13, 2025, at Good Samaritan Society- Hutchinson Village. He was born October 9, 1937, to Robert Henry and Ina (Borders) Heim. In 1961, he married Donna Kay Brack in Hutchinson. They later divorced but remained friends.Marion was a man with many interests. He earned a Bachelor of Education degree through Kansas State University and Emporia State University. For many years he was a teacher, spending most of that time working for USD #444 (Little River-Windom). He enjoyed teaching middle school and is remembered fondly by his former students. After more than two decades in education, he retired. But he did not slow down.&nbsp;Marion always helped manage his parent’s farm and later built a cozy log cabin on the property so that he could farm full-time. He could grow just about anything, and people enjoyed buying the corn, tomatoes, and watermelon that came from the farm. Marion also had a way with animals. Helen Gertrude Cox, 94, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 13, 2025, at her home in Arlington, Kansas. She was born on November 7, 1930, in Carman, Oklahoma to Ralph and Olive (Morgon) Cox.

Helen lived and worked in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. She lived through the depression, dust bowl and WWII. Helen graduated from Abbyville High School in 1948. Helen worked for several restaurants as a waitress and cook. She worked for Furrs Cafeteria and Ramada Inn. She also started up a restaurant in Stephenville, Texas. She also worked at Walmart as a greeter and in maintenance.

Some of Helen’s hobbies included tatting, sewing, needle work and cooking was her enjoyment in life. She was also an avid bunko player and enjoyed playing with her friends and family. She was kind and generous to all she met and loved.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
