Theodore James “Ted” McVay, age 75, of Sun City West, Arizona passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 while surrounded by his family, at Banner Gateway Medical Center, Gilbert, Arizona. Ted was born in Concordia, Kansas on September 18, 1946, the son of Mary Ruth Jenson and William James McVay. He attended schools in McPherson, Kansas and graduated from McPherson High School in 1964. He pursued his dream of playing college football by attending Hutchinson Junior College on a football scholarship after high school and then went on to play football at Kansas State University. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1968 and was drafted into the U. S. Air Force proudly serving his country. Upon being honorably discharged in 1972, he served a brief stint with the Boy Scouts of America and was then offered an opportunity in the banking industry in Nortonville, Kansas in 1975 which led to a lifelong career in the banking industry. He was appointed and elected to numerous leadership roles with the Kansas Bankers Association, Community Bankers Association of Kansas, Bankers Bank of Kansas and other financial institutions over the years. Ted officially “retired” from Farmers State Bank in McPherson in 2012 but continued to serve on the board of directors and in an advisory capacity until his death. Ted was involved in various community and civic organizations in each community he called home. Those who knew and loved Ted knew how much he loved his grandkids and K-State football. His best days were when he could combine both! After retiring, he enjoyed the beautiful weather in Arizona which allowed him to participate in his other loves—GOLF and Softball! He and Sue enjoyed their traveling adventures especially to Roatan, Honduras and no matter where he traveled he always saw a friend. Ted is survived by his wife Sue (Gracey) McVay, daughter Angela (Matt) Landwehr; daughter Angie (Luke) Schmidt; son Jason (Ghen) Hess; grandchildren McCoy Landwehr; Ben and Jacob Schmidt; Liam, Cassie and Amarisse Hess, Jacqie Schmidt and sister Janis (Dennis) Pauls. The Blue Dragons lost 7-1 to NOC-Enid and 11-3 to No. 2-nationally ranked Grayson College in their first two games. Hutchinson looks to rebound on Saturday with afternoon games against Weatherford College at 2:30 p.m. and Vernon College at 4:15 p.m.

The Blue Dragons and Jets had six hits each, bot NOC-Enid took advantage of seven walks and blew the game open with a four-run fifth.

The Dragons trailed just 3-0 through four innings. They scored their only run in the top of the fifth when Haley Miller singled up Easton Swanson with two out to cut the deficit to two runs. The Dragons couldn’t come up with another big hit and left the bases loaded in the inning and stranded eight runners on base in the game.

Six different players had hits for the Blue Dragons. Allie Stipsits and Carley Sterneker had doubles.

Keirsten Weitze (0-1) was the losing pitcher for Hutchinson, working just two-thirds of an inning. She gave up two hits and two runs with one walk. Emily Munson worked 1 2-3 innings with no runs allowed. Morgan Pennycuff worked the final four innings and struck out four.

The 2001 national runner-up jumped on the Blue Dragons for three runs in the top of the first inning, but Hutchinson responded and tied the game in its half of the first inning.

Natalie Bevan doubled home Haley Miller and Aspen Goetz’s infield single drove in Madison Grimes to cut the Grayson lead to 3-2. The Dragons tied the game when Bevan scored in a Grayson throwing error.

Grayson had an answer of its own with two runs in the second and three more runs in the fourth to lead take a 9-3 lead.

The Blue Dragons had eight hits led by leadoff hitter Ella Dougherty’s 3-for-4 performance. She had a double. Grimes was 2 for 3 for the Dragons.

Starting pitcher Sadie Loney (2-1) took the loss. She gave up eight hits and nine runs in three innings. Pennycuff worked 2 1-3 innings in relief and Munson worked two-thirds of an inning.

Grayson racked up 11 hits against the Blue Dragons.

Tough day Friday for HutchCC softball

John Alan Miller, 71, died February 9, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;He was born April 28, 1950, in Salina, to Harris and Margaret (LeRoy) Miller.

John graduated from Salina Central High School in 1968, and attended Hutchinson Community College. &nbsp;On June 10, 1973, he married Kay Guy, in Hutchinson. &nbsp;They shared almost 49 years together. &nbsp;

John was employed by Superior Boiler Works after college and sold real estate for Tucker Agency and Caldwell-Banker Real Estate. &nbsp;For 35 years, he was self-employed as an insurance adjuster. &nbsp;John loved fishing, hunting, auto body projects, and never missed his children or grandchildren’s activities or events. &nbsp;He loved coaching youth baseball and softball. &nbsp;Most of all, John loved his family.

John is survived by: his wife, Kay of Hutchinson; daughters, Tori (Luke) Koester of Derby and Kelly (Josh) Miller-Davies of Hutchinson; son, Jeff (Sarah) Miller of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Sebastian, Louna and Cole; sisters, Elaine (Ralph) Berry of Sunriver, OR; Louise Creamer of Wells, KS; brother, Lynn Miller of Hutchinson; brothers-in-law, Erwin (Sue) Guy&nbsp; and Kenny (Kristy) Guy of Hutchinson; 11 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harris and Margaret Miller.

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mary Katherine (Herbstreith) Trostle, age 85.&nbsp; She passed away peacefully on February 8, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village.&nbsp; Mary was born May 3, 1936, in Sabetha, KS, to Vernie J. Herbstreith and Helen Frances Wende.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernie on March 29, 1987, and Helen on August 23, 1991.

Mary married Gary Dean Trostle on October 11, 1969, in Reno County, KS, and they moved to his farm.&nbsp; Gary preceded her in death on January 18, 2022, just three weeks prior to her passing.&nbsp; She was the oldest of four children, Dale, Jerry, and Bill Herbstreith. &nbsp;Mary went to school in Sabetha, KS, Axtell, KS, and Manhattan, KS.&nbsp;

She was a loving devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all whose lives she touched.&nbsp; For over 42 years, Mary worked in many areas of administration at the Good Samaritan facility in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She loved and touched the hearts of all the residents in her care.&nbsp; Mary was constantly engaged in the residents' lives and would spend her free time on the weekends planning activities to help them embrace life and make them laugh.&nbsp; She even had the residents come to her home during the Christmas season for Christmas dinner, which of course she made herself, as she loved to cook and took great pride in giving to others.&nbsp; Mary was also very active helping on the farm during harvest time, enjoyed taking trips with her brothers, and enjoyed crafting and making items for the residents.&nbsp; She never sat idle.&nbsp;

Mary was always giving of herself.&nbsp; Most of all she loved her family and instilled in all of them strong values and beliefs that serve them well to this day.&nbsp; She was a mother to her daughter, Melody Smith, and her son, Steven Trostle.&nbsp; Mary was a loving, doting, proud grandmother to her grandsons, Michael Bascom and wife Sara, Cody Smith and wife Hannah, and her granddaughter, Kayla Smith.&nbsp; She was even blessed to be a great-grandmother to great-grandson, Logan Smith, great-granddaughter, Savannah Smith, and great-grandson, Gabe Ferguson.

Mary is survived by all three of her brothers, a great-aunt on her mother’s side, and all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Her loving spirit will live on in all of her family's lives until they join her in eternal life.

Per Mary’s wishes, no public memorial service will be held.

Community College with her RN, working as a nurse at Mt Hope Nursing Center,
Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Oncology, Hutchinson Clinic Oncology, a
hospice nurse for Hospice Care of Kansas, a mental health nurse for Prairie
View, and a mental health nurse for Sedgwick County ComCare.&nbsp; She was a member of the First Christian
Church, Burrton and was the starting member of Burrton Boot.&nbsp; She also worked as a jewelry consultant.&nbsp; 

She married Jorge Fernandez on December 12, 1987.&nbsp; He survives.

BEATRICE, Nebraska – The bats were quiet on opening day for the Hutchinson Community College baseball team, but the Game 2 pitchers were a big reason the Blue Dragons opened 2022 with a doubleheader sweep over Southeast (NE) Community College on Thursday.

Sophomore Ben McLaughlin had his third career multi-home run game, but the Blue Dragons lost to the Storm 9-3 in the 2022 season opener at Christenson Field. The Dragons rebounded in Game 2 for a 2-1 win as four Hutchinson pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

The Blue Dragons and Storm were to play a three-game series this week at Hobart-Detter Field, but last week’s winter storm left too much snow and ice on certain sections of the field. The series was moved to Beatrice and shortened to a doubleheader on Thursday.

The Blue Dragons combined for seven hits, but stranded 12 runners on base in the season-opening doubleheader. The Dragons were a combined 1 for 17 with runners in scoring position combined.

The Blue Dragons had only three hits in the second game, but made them count.

Freshman Booga de la Garza homered in his first career at-bat, which was a solo shot in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Braedyn Sommer hit a one-out triple in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. That Sommer’s hit was the last hit of the day for Hutchinson.

Led by Blue Dragon starter Jackson Blue, the Blue Dragons limited Southeast to one run and four hits.

Blue (1-0) struck out four and walked one with two hits allowed in the first three innings of the game. Ben Dandelet gave up a solo home run, but struck out three in two innings. Chase Torkelson worked three scoreless innings with five strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Kaden Wickersham struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first career save.

Daniel Bebee had the only other hit in Game 2 for the Blue Dragons. Bebee also threw out one base stealer

Six different Storm pitchers struck out 13 Blue Dragons in the second half.

The Dragons rebounded in Game 2 for a 2-1 win as four Hutchinson pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.The Blue Dragons and Storm were to play a three-game series this week at Hobart-Detter Field, but last week’s winter storm left too much snow and ice on certain sections of the field. The series was moved to Beatrice and shortened to a doubleheader on Thursday.The Blue Dragons combined for seven hits, but stranded 12 runners on base in the season-opening doubleheader. The Dragons were a combined 1 for 17 with runners in scoring position combined.GAME 2 RECAPThe Blue Dragons had only three hits in the second game, but made them count.Freshman Booga de la Garza homered in his first career at-bat, which was a solo shot in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Braedyn Sommer hit a one-out triple in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. That Sommer’s hit was the last hit of the day for Hutchinson.Led by Blue Dragon starter Jackson Blue, the Blue Dragons limited Southeast to one run and four hits.Blue (1-0) struck out four and walked one with two hits allowed in the first three innings of the game. Dragons split season-opening DH

Wesley James Bontrager, 81, of Buhler, died on February 7, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born August 2, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Andrew and Nora (Yutzy) Bontrager.

Wes graduated from Central Christian High School in 1959, and Hutchinson Community College in 1964. He was a lifelong farmer as well as a Xerox technician for thirty years. Wes loved spending time with his family, farming, and basketball as well as all sports.&nbsp; He also loved his churches, Buhler Mennonite and Yoder Mennonite.

On November 26, 1965, he married Marilyn Louise Strausz, in Buhler. They shared 56 years together.

Wes is survived by: wife, Marilyn Bontrager, Buhler; sons, James (Diane) Bontrager, McPherson; Wendell (Marie) Bontrager, Haven; Warren (Emilie) Bontrager, Buhler; daughter, Nori Bontrager King (Nolan), Cochranville, Pennsylvania; 15 grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Weaver (Dick), Highlands Ranch, Colorado; and brother, Marion Bontrager (Judy), Glendale, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by: his parents Andrew and Nora Yutzy Bontrager; brothers, Maynard Bontrager, Ken Bontrager, Clarence “Clay” Bontrager; and his grandparents.

Freddie “Vico” Mendoza Jr., 81, of Hutchinson, died February 6, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born May 8, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Freddie and Rafailia (Flores) Mendoza.

Freddie attended grade school in Partridge and then Junior High in Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1958. He attended Hutchinson Community College.

Freddie served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964. He worked as a jailer for the Hutchinson Police Department for a few years before going to work as a machinist at Cessna/Eaton and worked there until he retired. Freddie was a diehard Raiders and Yankees fan. He enjoyed long bike rides and spending time with his family, just watching his grandkids at play. Freddie was especially proud of their school activities and accomplishments. He was of the Catholic faith.

On July 14, 2000, Freddie married Charlotte Ann (Meyers) Hill, in Hutchinson. She survives.

Also surviving are: his children, Jesse Mendoza of Wichita, Carmen Macias (Andres) of Brownsville, TX, Jacki Mendoza of Hutchinson, Mario Mendoza of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Dominic Mendoza, Diego Macias, Lionel Macias, Kahlil Mendoza, Kylan Mendoza, Kade Mendoza, Damian Hernandez-Mendoza; siblings, Gloria Rodriguez of Dodge City, Ernie Mendoza (Toby) of South Hutchinson; and numerous extended family members.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department swore in two new members to the department. Officer Mason Cooper and Lucas Dunbar joined the force in a recent ceremony.

Officer Cooper was born in Emporia, Kansas and moved to Hutchinson in grade school as both of his parents were born and raised in Hutchinson. He recently worked for his father at Cooper Tire as well as being a Police Service Aide for the past 2 1/2 years. He attended Buhler High School and graduated HCC with an Associates in Criminal Justice. He participated in High School Golf, and 4-H shooting sports. He always wanted to be a Police Officer to make a good lasting impact on the community. Officer Cooper's future Goals as a Police Officer are to be a K9 Handler and be a member of the Emergency Response Team.

Officer Dunbar was born and raised here in Hutchinson, Kansas but he is currently living in Sterling, Kansas. He recently graduated from Sterling College in May of 2021 with a degree in History and Government. Upon graduation, he became a first generation college graduate and now a first generation law enforcement officer. While at Sterling College, he played football, and had the opportunity to coach there as well. In his free time, he enjoys lifting weights and competing in strongman / powerlifting competitions throughout the year. He also enjoys spending time with his family. Officer Dunbar is looking forward to helping others, and is excited to give back to a community that has given so much to him.

HPD welcomes two new officers

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's a fairly light agenda for the Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees Thursday evening.

The board will go over two bids for purchases. One is for security cameras in the dormitories from CBS Door and Hardware at a cost of $49,741. The purchases will provide 94 cameras for the dormitories. The cameras and licenses are the last part of the upgrade, as all new network cables and runs have already been installed.

The second bid for consideration is for new curtains for the recital hall. The recommended bid is from Iweiss Holdings LLC at a cost of $30,005.

Also Thursday evening, the board will go into executive session to discuss negotiations.

Bids a part of Thursday's HutchCC BOT meeting

For the first time in four seasons, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team wasn’t the preseason pick to win the Jayhawk West.

That fact means nothing to 10th-year head coach Ryan Schmidt, who has high expectations for his ball club every season to contend for a conference title.

The journey toward a potential league crown this season begins on Thursday against Southeast Community College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Beatrice, Nebraska. The Blue Dragons and Storm were supposed to play a three-game series on Thursday and Friday at Hobart-Detter Field, but the Blue Dragons’ home field still wasn’t ready for play after last week’s winter storm.

“We lost a lot of really good players,” said Schmidt who is 318-169 with four Jayhawk West titles in his first nine seasons. “With this group, we have a lot of hunger, a lot of desire and we have a lot of inexperience.

These guys are going to be thrown in the fire and they are going to get that experience really quickly.”

The 2021 Blue Dragons went 37-17 and won the Jayhawk West championship before falling to Colby in the Region VI sub-regional final.

Gone from that team are All-American and MLB draft pick Austin Callahan, a three-year starter at shortstop in Mason Lowe and the big bats of Jenner Steele and Cole Cosman. Schmidt will also have to replace and a pretty good chunk of the starting pitching rotation.

Schmidt does bring his entire outfield back and a solid foundation of pitchers who mostly worked out of the bullpen last season.

The first month of the season will be important for the Blue Dragons as they try to fill roles on the 2022 pitching staff.

“We’ve got a lot of guys vying for those positions,” Schmidt said. “We’ve got a lot of new faces and we had a good fall and productive spring. Our guys are getting stronger every time they touch the ball and I think we are trending in the right direction. We just have to solidify roles.”

A couple of transfer players will draw the starts in the first two games on Thursday at Southeast. Jack Whitlock is slated to be the Game 1 starter vs. the Storm and Jackson Blue will be the Game 2 starters.

Others in line to work as a starter is returning pitcher Ryan Schlotzhauer (2-3, 7.93 ERA in 2021). Right-handed Ben Dandelet has been in the program, but is finally healthy and ready to contribute.

As far as other returning pitchers, Zane Covey (3-2, 5.91 ERA) threw 42 2-3 innings out of the bullpen. He did have three starters last season. Luke Hornberger (1-2, 13.19 ERA) and Chase Torkelson (2-0, 6.75 ERA) also returns.

The 2021 Blue Dragon pitching staff posted a team 6.21 ERA and opponents hit .280 last season.

As far as the everyday line-up, a majority of Schmidt’s returning experience lies in the outfield with Jack Torosian, Jon Jenkins and Sterling Sutcliffe. Ben McLaughlin and P.J. Loucks also patrolled the outfield. Loucks missed the final 37 games with an injury, while McLaughlin was relegated to designated hitting duties because of his injury.

Jenkins hit .367 with three homers and 14 RBIs in the final 20 games. Torosian hit .353 and had an on-base percentage of .630 with 22 extra-base hits and six homers. Sutcliffe was stellar defensively in center and right field and hit .254. McLaughlin hit .366 with 13 homers and 58 RBIs. Loucks was hitting .308 at the time of his injury.

Also in the mix in the outfield is freshman Kael Babin

“We have some interesting pieces in the outfield,” Schmidt said.

Behind the plate, returning catchers Daniel Bebee (.206) and Cade Baker (.316) are back.

McLaughlin is slated to take over at first base, which leads Schmidt with an outstanding, but untested group of players to fill the spots at second, third and shortstop.

Hunter Gotreaux has battled injuries throughout his Blue Dragon career. Reno County product Ryan Henderson (Buhler) is expected to battle for an infield position. Freshman Booga de la Garza can play multiple infield positions.

Schmidt is high on shortstop Bryce Logan, who was spectacular with the glove in the fall.

“We have guys on this team who can play, but we just have a lot of inexperience right now,” Schmidt said. “We have good players and I think that can be fun. They just need to get between the white lines and we can see who can handle it.”

Linda June Beyer, 73, passed away February 6, 2022, at Wesley Towers Thorne Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born June 26, 1948, in Great Bend, KS, to Alvin and Irene (Gliessner) Holopirek.

Linda was a 1966 graduate of Otis Bison High School, Otis, KS, and a 1968 graduate of Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. She was employed as a receptionist at the State of Kansas Unemployment Division for over 30 years. Linda was active for many years, serving in various roles in Beta Sigma Phi. and a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

Linda was an extremely active member of the V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361 Ladies Auxiliary of Hutchinson, for 31 years, serving as district and local board member positions. You would often find Linda decorating the Post for every holiday, organizing party events and making sure the Post was in order.

Linda loved to go antiquing with her daughters, visiting with friends, adored playing and caring for her cats, gardening, and most importantly, loved the time she shared with her four grandchildren.

On August 1, 1970, she married James Albert Beyer in Timken.&nbsp; They shared over 51 years of marriage.

Linda is survived by:&nbsp; her husband, James Beyer of Hutchinson; daughters, Leslie (Jordan) Hind of Gardner, and Patty (Brian) Teufel of Goddard; granddaughters, Katy Teufel, Ali Teufel, Juneau Hind, and River Hind; and brother, Perry (Karla) Holopirek of Great Bend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Terry Holopirek.

Memorial liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating.&nbsp; Celebration of Life gathering will follow the service at the V.F.W., 328 N. The Hutchinson Community College softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of the Independence Pirates on Tuesday at Fun Valley, doing so in two completely different ways.

Sophomore pitcher Sadie Loney struck out eight in four innings as the Blue Dragons pounded out 14 hits in a 9-2 victory in Game 1. The Blue Dragons then had to rally from an early five-run deficit in Game 2, only to build a three-run lead and then hold on for an 8-7 win over the Pirates.

The Blue Dragons start the season 4-0 with the next two weekends to be spent in Texas. This weekend, Hutchison will play four games in the Grayson County Tournament in Dennison, Texas. The Blue Dragons play NOC-Enid and No. 3 Grayson on Friday and Weatherford and Vernon on Saturday.

Loney had a strong outing in the pitcher’s circle and was staked to six early runs over the first three innings as the Blue Dragons out-hit the Pirates 14-3 in the opening game.

Working the first four innings, Loney struck out eight, including five in a row, striking out the side in the second inning. Loney (2-0) earned her 12th career pitching win allowing only one run – a wind-aided home run to Cheyenne Henry in the fourth – two hits and one walk.

Offensively, Carley Sterneker’s two-run first-inning double capped a three-run first and started a run of six unanswered runs over the first three innings by the Blue Dragons. Leadoff hitter Ella Dougherty added a ground-rule RBI double in the second and two runs scored on an Easton Swanson fielder’s choice in the third.

The Blue Dragons scored at least one run in 5 of their 6 offensive innings.

Dougherty posted her first career four-hit game, going 4 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Sterneker, Aspen Goetz and Swanson all had two hits each in the opening game.

Emily Munson worked two innings of relief in the pitcher’s circle. She gave up one earned run and walked two with a strikeout. Riley Wertz closed out the game with two strikeouts in a perfect seventh.

The Blue Dragons trailed in a game for the first time this season after giving up five runs, all with two out, in the Pirate second inning.

After stranding five runners on base in the first two innings, the Blue Dragons finally started the comeback with a two-run Goetz single in the third. The Dragons cut it to 5-3 when Dougherty scored from first on a Haley Miller sacrifice bunt and errant Pirate throw.

Then there was a bizarre fifth inning for Hutchinson.

Wertz led off with a walk and went all the way to third after Allie Stipsits’ line-drive to center field was misplayed and rolled all the way to the fence. The Dragons then loaded the bases on a nine-pitch walk to Lexie Pitcher. After a Pirate pitching change, the Dragons cut the Indy lead to one run on a bases-loaded hit-by-hit to Dougherty and tied the game at 5-5 when pinch-runner Cheyenne Collins scored on a wild pitch. Hutch took the lead when Miller laced an RBI double to right-center and Madison Grimes singled up the middle. The five-run inning was capped when Miller scored on another wild pitch for an 8-5 Blue Dragon lead.

&nbsp;The Dragons looked to finally be in control after Wertz, who entered the game in the top of the fifth, struck out the side in the sixth. Wertz gave up a leadoff single to Sarena Sanders to start the seventh. She was at third with two out and the Pirates’ Kenna Ferguson, who was down to her last strike, hit a two-run homer to left to cut the Dragon lead to 8-7. Wertz then closed out her first career pitching win with a strikeout of Parker Moore.

The Blue Dragons had nine hits in Game 2 led by Miller’s 3-for-3 performance. Grimes was 2 for 2 with two walks. The Blue Dragons stranded a season-high 10 runners on base.

Relief pitcher Kiersten Weitze was an unsung hero for the Blue Dragons. She got the final out of the five-run Pirate second inning and worked 2 1-3 innings of scoreless relief with two hits allowed and four strikeouts. Wertz (1-0) struck out seven in the final three innings.

Morgan Pennycuff started and worked the first 1 2-3 innings.

Softball Blue Dragons take pair over Pirates

Kan. — Reno County Commissioners are planning to do further work on how to spend the latest round of COVID relief dollars later this month.

"It looks like there's consensus amongst the commission to have a extended study session in two weeks related to ARPA recommendations," said Chairman Daniel Friesen. "If it's okay with you guys, I think we might just work through lunch and bring lunch in. Is that acceptable? We'll plan on having a study session after our regularly scheduled meeting."

The ARPA Task Force told the county commission last month it would like to see the bulk of the money spent solving child care issues in the county. However, the study on those needs will not be back until October. Commissioner Ron Hirst is already doing some research on the topic.

"Randy Partington gave me some really good information on Finney County and how they are handling the early learning network and the county childcare that I thought was very informative," Hirst said. "I've sent an email to them to look into that and discuss a little bit, because their coordination between the junior college and the city and the county to me is pretty impressive. To go along with that, our county counselor, Patrick gave me information on Lincoln County to contact them about theirs, so I'll be doing that."

Hutchinson City Administrator Jeff Cantrell suggested to his governing body that they go 50-50 on projects and the task force recommendations. 

The County Commission has not said what their division of those resources should be. That will likely be one of the topics of the upcoming study session.

Hutch High also had two students audition for colleges at the conference. Noah Buller auditioned for acting and received 14 callbacks from colleges attending the conference, while Kori Calkins auditioned for Technical Theatre and received 23 callbacks from colleges attending the conference.

In addition, instructor Toby Henline was named the Region V Kansas Theatre Teacher of the Year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HHS thespians do well at state

Karen Jones, 85, died January 29, 2022 at Pine Village in Moundridge Kansas. &nbsp;She was born on March 5, 1938 in Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp; Her parents were A.E. (Earl) Jones and Helen Edith (Phillips) Jones.

Karen attended Mitchell Grade School, graduated from Hutchinson High School, received her Bachelors of Science degree from Bethany Nazarene College (SNU), in Bethany Oklahoma, and a Master’s Degree from Kansas State University.

She taught Middle School, Home Economics in Newton, Kansas for thirty five years at Chisholm Middle School.&nbsp; She was active in the National, State, and local Home Economic Organizations; and the Kansas National Educational Association.

Karen enjoyed cooking, sewing, doing receptions, preparing meals for various groups at her church, and cheering the KSU Wildcats.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Leonard Earl Jones, Dr. Richard (Helen Marie) Jones, and sister Helen Louise (Arlo) Newell.

Karen is survived by her sister Barbara Jean Jones of Newton, and her extended family Jerry and Joanne Supernois of Newton, Mark and Holly Supernois of Wichita, Lisa (Dan) Timmons of Newton, Kristi Bueno of Newton, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System on Monday announced the hire of Penny Stoss as the Director of the HRHS Learning Academy, which is projected to launch in 2023.

In her new role, Stoss will be working closing with State agencies to develop the highest quality childcare academy available. She will report to Chief Executive Officer Ken Johnson and her temporary office is located inside of Administration. An Advisory Council of childcare experts will advise Stoss as she formulates plans to open the HRHS Learning Academy.

Stoss’ 30-plus-year background in education includes her most recent role as Assistant Superintendent and Curriculum Director of USD 309 Nickerson/South Hutchinson. She also served USD 418 McPherson as Director of Early Childhood and Building Principal, where she supervised a staff of 60.

Penny’s own education includes a Master’s in Educational Administration from Wichita State University, a Master’s in Education &amp; Curriculum from Friends University, and a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from McPherson College. When asked about her goals for the new unit, Stoss stated “Our goal will be to provide high quality childcare in an effort to remove a layer of stress from the lives of hard-working parents. The availability of childcare is an important factor in the retention and recruitment of good employees and Hutchinson Regional aspires to be in the forefront of providing those services. It is our goal to provide childcare services to the several hundred employees who are juggling their jobs with raising a family.”

In her off time, Stoss enjoys reading, gardening, spending time with her two grown children, her husband Steve and her dog.

Stoss to lead HRHS Learning Academy

Kan. — Midwest Superstore, HutchCC and the Cancer Council of Reno County are pleased to see the return of Pink Out Night this Saturday at the Sports Arena.

"We're excited to have it again," said Steve Kappenman with HutchCC. "Last year, we weren't able to do it with COVID. This just kind of amps it up even more. This is our 10th annual Pink Out. The Blue Dragons will take on the Colby Trojans. We're selling shirts and all proceeds go to Cancer Council of Reno County. We've been selling shirts for the last two weeks or so at our home games. We're already up to $3000. We've kind of put a dent in that $10,000."

Midwest Superstore is providing the shirts. If you want to help more after buying a shirt, the college is also doing pledge cards.

"Josh Gooch came up with that, the AD at the college," Kappenman said. "Folks can come to the game and if they want to give $1 per three, then every three we make, the girls and the guys, you're going to have to own up to that, hopefully. We're on the honor system and you'll come in and pay for that. If you're feeling like $5, we'll take whatever you want. We're hoping we just light it up and hit 20 or 30 threes that night."

For the Cancer Council, this is a huge month with their annual fundraiser, but the whole goal is to pay for those incidental expenses for Reno County people with cancer.

"The little things that you don't think about, the travel, the mileage, the gas, the wear and tear on your vehicle," said Ashley Thompson, Director of Patient Care for Cancer Council of Reno County. "A lot of times, just out of pocket expenses that patients aren't used to having to pay for. We definitely pick up the little things."

The Cancer Council is currently serving 230 Reno County residents actively that are going through treatment.

Kan. — Midwest Superstore, HutchCC and the Cancer Council of Reno County are pleased to see the return of Pink Out Night this Saturday at the Sports Arena."We're excited to have it again," said Steve Kappenman with HutchCC. "Last year, we weren't able to do it with COVID. This just kind of amps it up even more. This is our 10th annual Pink Out. The Blue Dragons will take on the Colby Trojans. We're selling shirts and all proceeds go to Cancer Council of Reno County. We've been selling shirts for the last two weeks or so at our home games. We're already up to $3000. We've kind of put a dent in that $10,000."Midwest Superstore is providing the shirts. If you want to help more after buying a shirt, the college is also doing pledge cards."Josh Gooch came up with that, the AD at the college," Kappenman said. "Folks can come to the game and if they want to give $1 per three, then every three we make, the girls and the guys, you're going to have to own up to that, hopefully. We're on the honor system and you'll come in and pay for that. If you're feeling like $5, we'll take whatever you want. We're hoping we just light it up and hit 20 or 30 threes that night."For the Cancer Council, this is a huge month with their annual fundraiser, but the whole goal is to pay for those incidental expenses for Reno County people with cancer."The little things that you don't think about, the travel, the mileage, the gas, the wear and tear on your vehicle," said Ashley Thompson, Director of Patient Care for Cancer Council of Reno County. "A lot of times, just out of pocket expenses that patients aren't used to having to pay for. We definitely pick up the little things."The Cancer Council is currently serving 230 Reno County residents actively that are going through treatment.

Pink Out night coming up Saturday

WICHITA, Kan. — Sophomore distance runner Louise Cocking qualified for nationals in her third event and thrower Lushous Davis PR’ed for the second time this season to lead the Hutchinson Community College women’s track and field team at the Wichita State Herm Wilson Classic on Saturday at the Heskett Center.

For the third-straight meet, Cocking qualified for the NJCAA Indoor national championships in March with a third-place finish in the Mile Run. Cocking’s time of 5:23.15 is also the second-fastest indoor Mile time in Blue Dragon history.

Cocking has now qualified in the Mile and the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs. She has three of the Blue Dragons’ four national qualifying marks for the 2022 indoor season. Pole vaulter Kiana Brown is the other national qualifier.

Davis, a sophomore, posted her second PR of the season in the women’s weight throw and she posted her career-best event finish with a fourth-place effort at WSU. Davis threw 44 feet, 5.5 inches.

The Blue Dragons had several strong performances in the middle-distance races on Saturday.

Courtney Baetz was eighth in the event at 1:54.16.Freshman Anastasia Meyer was 10th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:31.83.Freshman Michelle Gage placed 10th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 12:12.18.Sophomore Patrisha Doll placed sixth in the shot put with a distance of 36-feet, 6.75 inches. She placed 1th in the weight throw at 39-11.5.Freshman Gabi Unruh was 10th in the high jump after clearing 4-9.75.Brown placed 10th in the pole vault at 10-0.5.Sophomore Hannah Schrock was 10th in the shot put at 36-4.75.The Blue Dragons will have next week off before the 2022 Region VI Indoor Championships on Feb. 19-20 at the Plaster Center in Pittsburg.
