Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of North Main Street and 25th Avenue.

Sept. 26, 1950, was the grand opening of the Ranch House Restaurant at 2420 N. Main, designed by Mann &amp; Co. and built by Foy Construction of Hutch. It was owned and operated by G.C. Fowler, a former salesman for Krause Plow Corp. Fowler had previously spent 12 years in the restaurant business in Texas.

In 1952, Janice and Hervy Franklin bought the operation from Fowler. The first photo shows the business advertising at that time.

Between 1959 and 1961, Sam Meranda owned it.

Between 1961 and 1968, Zenny Leonida owned it. The Leonida family was renowned for the "Hollywood Grill" and the Airport Steakhouse.

In 1969, it was the Steer Inn Restaurant, owned by Bill Holdren.

Between 1971 and 1973, it was the Family Center.

Between 1975 and 1979, it was the Thunderbird Home Improvement Center, owned by Jim Schwinn.

In 1980, it became Jeanie's Beautiful People place, with Jeanie Harvell. The second photo shows the property today, operating as the State Fair Shopping Center. The property is owned by Ncr Investments L.L.C., care of Mark Foy.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Ranch House - Vol. 68

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to early downtown history, which has seen one significant flood after another from Cow Creek spilling out of its banks.

The first was in 1877, when Hutch was just six years old. These photos were from T.H. Jackson, Lot #43, one of the first photographers here locally. The first photo shows Sherman and Main, looking north, with the First National Bank on the left.

The second photo shows the McKee and Bloom Livery - Sales and Feed Stable at 16-24 W. 2nd.

The third photo shows 2nd and Main looking south at the Empey &amp; Burell signage at 113 N. Main. They were a grocer and bakery. This one required deep search in the newspaper archives to pinpoint the location.

The fourth photo shows what that view looks like today.

 Many attempts were made over the years to fix the flooding problems, from straightening the canal, to constructing the Harsha Canal, culminating with the Cow Creek Diversion Canal in 1955 finally working.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Cow Creek - Vol. 67

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 200 block of South Main Street on the west side.

In 1898, the Rock Island Lumber &amp; Coal Company started at 213 S. Main with A.J. Renner as manager. The first photo shows this facility in 1908 after loading a customer's wagon. 

The second photo shows the business on Sept. 29, 1917, as the Reno County Boys were parading in front of it, to go off to WW1 and load onto the troop trains at the Missouri-Pacific tracks at Avenue C and Main.

Between 1923 and 1928, the building housed the Houston-Zimmerman Lumber Co. with Charles Zimmerman as manager.

Between 1929 and 1931, The J.I. Case Co. Manufacturers of agricultural equipment in Racine, Wisconsin, used it as their sale and showroom floor.

Between 1931 and 1961, this location was the Reno Implement Co.

Between 1963 and 1984, it housed the Reno Hardware Co. owned by R.B. Langenwalter.

In 1985, Langenwalter sold the business's two locations to Frank Westlake out of Kansas City and it is still Westlake Ace Hardware today. The third photo shows that building today. 

Westlake now owns 160 stores in 12 states with its home base at 14000 Marshall Dr., Lenexa, Kansas.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Rock Island Lumber - Vol. 66

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" is a detour from our normal format. I thought we'd deviate from Hutch architectural history to Hutch social history.

This feature starts with "The Jades" — the house band at the Fireside Club at 1223 E. 30th, which was owned by Harold Nevius. The first photo shows The Jades in front of the Fireside Club sign in 1967.

These initial members were Bob Maddern, Dana Messing, John Hostutler, O'Dell Reed and Doug Messing. As the house band, they played four nights a week for several months before setting off to play all over Kansas on the weekends.

The second photo shows a publicity photo of The Jades in 1968, on stage at the Fireside when the band was Dana Messing, Darrel Milhon, O'Dell Reed, Dan Downing and Ron Dutton.

The third photo shows the group in 1970's attire at the soldiers and sailors monument.

The fourth photo shows the band "Beast" in 1973, that played the Fireside many times. Members included Donnie Wierman, Tom Rietcheck, Mike Schmidt, Dana Messing, Michael Kerns and Bruce Brown.

The fifth photo shows "Cruisin'" in 1987, that included Bill Jones, Bruce Brown and Dana Messing.

They came along after the Fireside closed and moved to the San Francisco Bay area. All these bands had one member in common: Dana Messing.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch Bands - Vol. 65

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of West 6th Avenue on the south side.

Right after WW2, Howard Jackson and Bernard King were working for J.S. Dillon &amp; Sons in Wichita and saw a need for a meat locker plant in Hutchinson. They moved here to start that business.

In March of 1946, Howard Jackson hired Oscar Young Construction to build a new building at 13 W. 6th for $12,000. The first photo shows the new Jackson Food Locker at completion.

The second photo shows the business opening in late 1946.

The third photo shows the interior display and sales area.

Business flourished and, by 1955, the company had a staff of eight with four delivery trucks. The fourth photo shows the employees and trucks.

In 1960, Howard's son, Bill, purchased the business from his parents.

In 1995, Michael and Robin Jackson bought the business from Bill.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Jackson Meat - Vol. 64

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of North Main and 25th Avenue.

The blond-brick building at 2500 N. Main was constructed in 1946 by Owen S. Boone for $3,200. It was to be his new Ideal Laundry and Dry Cleaners. The first photo shows this business in 1952.

Owen and his family, Cecil and Clarence, first started in the laundry business in 1917 at 534 E. Ave. E. The second photo shows that first attempt in this field.

It was also the residence of Clarence. As time went on, part of the family was Ineeda Laundry and part was Ideal Laundry. But by 1946, it was just Owen and the Ideal Laundry. 

In 1966, Wallace Craig took over the Ideal Laundry at 25th and Main.

Between 1969 and 1974, it became the American Uniform Rental Inc.

In 1976, the 2500 N. Main building was remodeled into multiple retail outlets. The third photo shows 2500 N. Main today, now known as the North Main Center and owned by First Choice Leasing L.L.C.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Ideal Cleaners - Vol. 63

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of 4th Avenue and North Main.

As evident by the dated keystone, this building was clearly built in 1889. The first occupant seems to have been the W.H. Benedict Coal, Grocery and Seed Dealer from 1893 to 1900.

Between 1904 and 1906, it was the Northside Coal &amp; Feed Co. by Edwin Yoder.

In 1908, it became the Harry Jones Furnished Rooms.

By 1912, it was divided up even more to include the Plumber, Tailors, and Novelty Works.

Between 1918 and 1941, it became the J.C. O'Donnell Hardware.

Between 1945 and 1958, it was the McCrory-Lyle Hardware. The first photo shows this enterprise in 1955 from a Kodacolor slide.

The second photo shows this business at opening in 1945.

Between 1958 and 1962, it was the Johnson-Lyle Hardware. From 1964-1965, it was the Used Furniture Center.

In 1966, the usage completely changed to become the Eldridge Mattress Factory. This continued to 1987.

In 1988, it became the Sunset Traders Pawn Shop with Steve Boll. The third photo shows the business at 400-402 N. Main today, with Darin Thrash as the business co-owner as well as the property owner. This property has been in the Thrash family for more than 36 years.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Sunset Pawn - Vol. 62

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Avenue A and South Main.

The three-story building at 28 S. Main was originally built in 1887 and known as the Whiteside-Penney Block.

Around 1900, it was converted to the New York Hotel and A.E. Streeter was the proprietor. The first photo shows the New York Hotel in all its glory about 1908.

Around 1915, the hotel ended and the building was converted back to retail businesses. That's when Cash Drug opened at 28 S. Main.

In 1927, the building went through a comprehensive remodeling. The second photo, by the Stamey Construction Co., shows the third-story removal and the rebricking of two sides to resemble the building we see today.

The third photo shows the Cash Drug Co. in 1940. It was there from 1915 to 1965.

From 1966 to 1986, Virginia's Women's Clothing resided at 28 S. Main.

In 1987, the building had another changeover with Hooter's and Apollo Specialties occupying these spots.  The fourth photo shows these businesses in 1988.

Wayne's Printing took over the 26 S. Main slot in 1994. The fifth photo shows the 26-28 S. Main addresses today with Wayne's and Apollo Specialties still there. The Property is owned by Wayne's Printing &amp; Copying Inc. c/o Wayne Strawder.

📷 Throwback Thursday: New York Hotel - Vol. 61

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 2500 block of North Main Street on the east side.

In 1932, Harry Coberly partnered with Carl Hayes and opened a drug store at 4th and Plum.

By 1935, Harry was on his own and eventually opened many more stores: Locations like 5th and Adams in 1935, 1301 N. Main in 1938, 26th and Main in 1953 and even in the Northgate Center in 1965.

In 1956, he partnered with Vivian Mammel and they constructed the Larkland Shopping Center at 26th and Main, with Haskard Construction as general contractor. The first photo shows the shopping center at construction completion in April of 1956, with signage starting to go up.

The second photo shows the shopping center at opening in May 1956 with seven retail stores like Ben Franklins and Roberts Sports Shop.

The third photo shows the Larkland Shopping Center today with more stores like the Larkland Barber Shop with Bruce and Cheryl Hoyle. The current owner is the Larkland Shopping Center, Inc., c/o Mark Coberly.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Larkland Shopping Center - Vol. 60

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of North Main Street and 13th Avenue.

In 1906, this location was the northernmost of all housing and businesses on the east side of Main Street within the city limits. It was also the south end of the fairgrounds at the time.

Frank and Beulah Jones purchased the two-story home at 1228 N. Main and opened a general merchandise store there. They also lived upstairs. The first photo shows Frank in his delivery wagon out front.

Their main items were Worthmore shoes and Ivory soap.

After this time, gas stations were prevalent on this property. The second photo shows the Mobil Gas Station, owned by Standard Oil of New York, but leased to H.A. "Curly" Bisbee with an adjoining view looking south on Main Street in 1952.

In 1958, Pat Haskard moved his laundry from 2nd and Washington to a new building here. Haskard Cleaners and Laundry was here until its sale to John Neal in 1985 and renamed Ineeda Cleaners.

In 2005, Rachel and Chris Nelson purchased the business from the Neal family. The third photo shows the business today, still owned by the Nelsons, but addressed as 1224 N. Main.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Ineeda Cleaners - Vol. 59

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of North Lorraine Street and East 30th Avenue.

Between 1969 and 1973, Tony and Edna Temaat both worked in the offices of the Egbert Oil Co.

In 1973, they bought the Gulf Oil Gas Station at 1123 E. 4th, which Tony managed. This was the start of the T &amp; E Oil Co.

In 1977, they also acquired the filling stations at 23 W. Ave A and 8 N. Main in South Hutch.

In 1978, they also acquired the station at 2021 E. 4th.

In 1979, Tony and Edna sold T &amp; E Oil to the Stanley Brown family.

In 1980, T &amp; E Oil built and started a new concept in filling stations at 1329 E. 30th, calling it the T &amp; E Oil U-Gas Station. The first photo shows that station at opening.

 The second photo shows the advertising for the grand opening.

In 1984, Tony and Edna built the Temaat strip center directly south of this station. After this point, the T &amp; E Oil Co. transitioned its gas stations to more of a convenience store concept.

In 2003, T &amp; E Oil sold off its Pantry Plusses to the Kwik Shop group. The third photo shows the current property occupants of the 1329 E. 30th location, the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, with the Temaat strip center directly behind. This property is now owned by the Wooderson Gst. exempt trust.

📷 Throwback Thursday: T & E Oil - Vol. 58

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of North Poplar Street and East 2nd Avenue.

Even though the architecture might look like a church, this building started life as a filling station.

Cities Services Oil Co. was there from 1935 to 1939.

Carl Peterson's filling station was there from 1939 to about 1945.

Harry and Howard Mock purchased the building in 1947, added on to it and ran the Hockaday Auto Supply there from 1947 to 1970. The first photo shows this enterprise in 1949.

R.E.I.B. (Real Estate and Investment Brokers) was started in 1959 by a group of local businessmen.

In 1970, Joe Gingerich and his two sons, Ron and Doc, purchased the company and moved it to the 201 E. 2nd building in 1975. The second photo shows the building and property today, still the R.E.I.B. business.

The company is run now by Ron, Doc and Robin Gingerich, and Laverle Pounds, and specializes in property auctions — just another longtime, successful, family-owned Hutchinson business.

📷 Throwback Thursday: 201 E. 2nd - Vol. 57

Today's article from the "Throwback Thursday Collection" is part three of the three-part series on the "History of Golf in Hutchinson."

The sixth course in Hutch was the Carey Lake Course and Golf Club. As the Hutchinson Country Club on 56th was struggling during the Great Depression, Emerson Carey opened a private 18-hole course just west of the Fairlawn Cemetery in 1930. The first photo shows the clubhouse on that course.

In 1932, Emerson and architect Ralph McCarroll opened the Carey Park Municipal Golf Course. The second photo shows that clubhouse and putting green in 1948.

In 1937, the Carey brothers supervised the construction of Prairie Dunes Country Club at 4812 E. 30th. This was done without machinery as not to overly-disturb the natural prairie. The third photo shows some of the 18-mule teams with Fresno Scrapers used to sculpt the course.

The fourth photo shows the original clubhouse at completion.

The fifth photo shows the clubhouse today.

Lastly, in 1972, a group of private investors came together to construct the Paganica/Lakewood/Highlands/Crazy Horse Sports Club &amp; Golf Course north of town on Monroe Street in the newly-designated city of Highlands.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Golf History - Vol. 56

Today's article from the "Throwback Thursday Collection" is the second of a three-part series on the "History of Golf in Hutchinson."

When it became necessary to abandon the first country club at 11th and Halstead, a split in opinion happened for the site. The powers-that-be wanted to build at 4508 W. 56th and Emerson Carey wanted it on a 160-acre tract he owned just south of there.

The powers won, so Carey said, "the heck with you," and built his own 18-hole course with a community and called it Willowbrook/Island Park in 1922. The first photo shows the new country club at 4508 W. 56th at opening.

The second photo features the scorecard back, showing the layout of the course meandering over and around Cow Creek.

The clubhouse was way overbuilt and the course crossed Cow Creek 13 times. Flooding would be a continuous problem as well as declining Depression membership. 

In 1936, it was sold for $13,000 in a court action. Meanwhile, Willowbrook flourished. The third photo shows a golfing event in front of Emerson's house in Willowbrook in the 1920s.

The country club later became the home to the Kansas Bible Camp. The fourth photo shows the Bible Campers having a great time in their swimming pool in 1974. 

The fifth photo shows the location today, still the Kansas Bible Camp, Inc., at 4508 W. 56th.

The powers-that-be wanted to build at 4508 W. 56th and Emerson Carey wanted it on a 160-acre tract he owned just south of there.The powers won, so Carey said, "the heck with you," and built his own 18-hole course with a community and called it Willowbrook/Island Park in 1922. The first photo shows the new country club at 4508 W. 56th at opening.<figure>

 </figure>The clubhouse was way overbuilt and the course crossed Cow Creek 13 times. Flooding would be a continuous problem as well as declining Depression membership. 📷 Throwback Thursday: The Move - Vol. 55

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 11th Avenue and North Halstead.

This is part one of a three-part series on the history of golfing in Hutchinson. 

The very first golf course was at 1st and Town streets, over to Halstead Street, in 1901. It had nine holes, sand greens and a swimming pond.

From 1904 to 1906, there was a nine-hole course on the south and east sides of the old fairgrounds property, from about 11th Avenue to 13th Avenue, and east of Main Street to Maple Street. 

In 1905, Hutchinson got serious about golf and opened an 18-hole, grass-green country club just east of 11th Avenue and Halstead Street, and South to 4th Avenue. The first photo shows the Hutchinson Country Club about 1918. 

The second photo shows the clubhouse and an array of golfers posing out front with their equipment. 

Alas, bad luck beset the property. The Soda Ash plant just west of this course produced a lot of fly ash that eventually killed the trees and grass greens. This caused the club to move, with the Soda Ash plant agreeing to pay the club $400 an acre for the land in 1921. The third photo shows the property today where the Hutchinson Country Club was located, now owned by the Evergy Electric Company and used as a storage facility.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutchinson Country Club - Vol. 54

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Bigger Avenue and South Main.

The building at 722-724 South Main was first constructed in 1935 as Charles Christopher Grocery and Hardware.

About 1940, it was converted to be the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company. In 1949, it became the Grapette Bottling Co. with Verne Hamilton as president, C.W. Kelley as V.P. and Guy Ankerholtz as Sec./Mgr. The first photo shows Bill Lehman and his Pontiac stock racing car in front of Grapette Bottling in 1950.

Bill raced mostly at the fairgrounds track and was sponsored by the Wat Henry Pontiac Dealership of Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

The building was vacant for a time, then Richard Blick moved his beer distributorship to this location between 1963-1971. The second photo shows Blick's sponsorship of the week's professional boxing championships broadcast on <a href="https://www.kwbwradio.com/default.asp?sec_id=140000775">KWBW radio</a> in 1967.

 Between 1979-1982, the building became the Seven-Up Bottling Co. warehouse. 

Between 1983-1987, it was S&amp;S Classic Cars  owned by Eldon Steffans. The third photo shows the 722-724 S. Main building today, owned by Barb, Jon and Donald Badget, and used for warehouse storage.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of East 4th Avenue and North Elm.

The building at 324 E. 4th was built and opened as Lums Restaurant in 1969 with Jack Taylor as manager, but it didn't last long. At that point, the subject of today's article entered. 

Ted Nieciecki was an interesting entrepreneur. In 1972, he started Ted's Family Restaurant in this building. The first photo shows the business at opening.

In 1974, he turned this into the Golden Cymbal Supper Club. Between 1976 to 1982, it was the Hutchinson Appliance Center, owned by Jack Zabel. 

In 1983 and 1984, it was Budget Rental with A.D. Arney.

In 1987, it became Casa De Zaki Restaurant, owned by Troy Albright. 

In May 1994, it became Connecting Point Computer Center, owned by Steve Harper. The name was changed to Network Management Group Inc. in 2000. The second photo shows that business.

In May 2019, NMGI moved to larger quarters at 734 E. 4th. The third photo shows the tenant of 324 E. 4th today, the PRMI Support Center, owned by Billzy L.L.C. of Henderson, Nevada.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Ted's Family Restaurant - Vol. 52

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of 13th Avenue and North Severance.

Hutchinson High School history started with Central School,&nbsp;which was Hutchinson's first dedicated high school, at 5th and Maple in 1891. 

The second high school was at 28 E. 7th Ave. and opened in the fall of 1910. 

This article is dedicated  to the third high school. 

In 1960, two new buildings were added to the Plaza Junior High and a new "sprawling campus" high school was opened at 810 E. 13th Ave. The first photo shows that conversion in progress.

The second photo shows the completed high school, taken from the Sports Arena in 1963. At that time, the parking lots for the high school and Sports Arena were still unpaved.

The third photo shows the problems the unpaved lot posed after rain storms in 1969.

Hutch High underwent another major renovation during the 2011-2012 school year. The fourth photo shows Hutchinson High School today from the parking lot at 810 E. 13th.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch High - Vol. 51

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East 11th Avenue and North Plum.

Hutchinson Junior College began in 1928 in an addition on the north side of the high school at 28 East 7th.

As attendance grew in 1938, work was started on a new campus located on the northeast corner of 11th and Plum. Lockman Hall was completed and, just east of that, Gowans Stadium was constructed — named after the college's first superintendent, J.W. Gowans. The first photo is an aerial taken of Gowans Stadium, football field and track, by 17-year-old Nation Meyer,&nbsp;who was earning his pilot's license, in the fall of 1938.

The second photo, taken in 1965, is another aerial showing the entire college campus and Sports Arena.

In August 2006, voters approved a bond to refurbish Gowans Stadium. It was dedicated in August of 2006. The third photo shows another aerial of the college campus and the new Gowans Stadium in 2014.

The fourth photo shows the inside of Gowans Stadium today with its new, huge video board. It is a facility that Hutchinson and the community college can be very proud of.

In 1945, he started his first retail store endeavor. Chet's Custom Floor Covering Co. at 1309 N. Main quickly expanded to include 1311 N. Main. Business went so well, that he built a new building at 2411 N. Main and, on May 1, 1949, he opened Bourell's Floors at this location. The first photo shows a night view at opening.<figure>

 </figure>He ran that business until his death in 1957, when his son, Marion, acquired it. In 1996, his son, Mike, and wife, Kathy, bought the business and ran it until its closing in 2010.About 2012, dentist Dr. John Dahm bought the building and completely remodeled it. The second photo shows the new dentistry look.<figure>
