Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1300 block of East Sherman where it would intersect with Lorraine.

In 1891, two Canadian manufacturing businesses merged to form the Massey-Harris Mfg. Co. They concentrated on making combines and tractors.

In the 1930s, they introduced the first self-propelled combine harvester and the first four-wheel-drive tractor.

In 1925, Massey-Harris opened an assembly plant in Hutchinson at 1200 E. Sherman. Where better than the heart of farming country? The first photo shows the sprawling plant in 1930, more than one block long.

Scott Symcox was the plant manager. The second photo shows a zoomed-in view, better showing the huge number of tractors and combines.

It was a viable concern through 1941, but apparently World War II affected the company's restructuring and, by 1942, the assembly plant was gone. The facility was purchased by the Master Mfg. Tool Co. that was moved here from Dodge City.

In 1953, Massey-Harris merged with the Ferguson Co. to become the Massey-Harris Ferguson Co. Then, in 1958, it took the Massey-Ferguson Co. name.

The facility became the R.L. Polk Co. (publishers of the city directories) addressed as 1 S. Lorraine. Then later the Board Foot Co. was there. The third photo shows the 1 S. Lorraine facility today, housing the Bin Shop'n warehouse, with the property being owned by the Gray Group L.L.C. of McPherson.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Massey-Harris Plant - Vol. 113

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 17th and North Plum.

In 1913, the Charles Summers family moved from Southwest Kansas to Hutchinson to take advantage of the major railroad intersections and start constructing "all concrete" terminal grain elevators.

In 1918, the Security Elevator Company was born and they started executing their plan at Avenue C and Lorraine.

After much success, they found themselves with an abundance of bulk gasoline and built two filling stations about 1932. The first photo shows one of those stations at 1628 N. Plum looking southeast. It was there from 1933 to 1942. <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/c67b538b-2c8d-4940-bbe7-798486dda02f">Note the old Bresee College building in the background.</a>

The second photo shows the same station looking northeast around Christmastime.

It became the Universal Service Station from 1947 to 1952.

It then became Ernie's Service Station from 1953 to 1958.

It then became Potter's Service Station from 1959 to 1978.

For those who remember Potter's being across the street, that happened in 1979.

The QuikTrip then built a new building in 1982 and the address was changed to 501 E. 17th.

Then it became Kwik Shop in 1984. The third photo shows Kwik Shop in 1987.

After Kwik Shop moved across the street to the northwest corner, the property became Papa Johns Pizza in 2006. The fourth photo shows the 501 E. 17th property today, still Papa Johns Pizza. The building is owned by Pryor Real Estate Development  L.L.C. of Hutchinson.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Papa Johns - Vol. 112

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 800 block of North Main on the east side.

In 1950, the Safeway grocery store company decided to build another store in Hutchinson. A roundtop with brick walls was constructed at 820 N. Main, just north of First Baptist Church.

The grand opening was in March of 1951. The first photo shows the busy store in 1957.

The second photo shows that store in the background during a parade showing off some of Wade Patton's antique automobiles.

This Safeway was active between 1951 to 1962.

In 1964, Banker's Investment Co. remodeled the space and had multiple office spaces within the building.

In 1978, the Security Pacific Finance Co. took over ownership, but was only there until 1985.

In 1987, the building was expanded and the Quest Center was born. This became an incubator for small businesses and the address was changed to 1 E. 9th. The third photo shows this enterprise about 1990.

In September 2013, HutchCC dedicated the Bob &amp; Lou Peel Allied Health Center into this location. The fourth photo shows the 1 E. 9th property today, still owned by HutchCC, that includes StartUp Hutch, which still includes the original 820 N. Main building.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Safeway Grocery - Vol. 111

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 100 block of North Main on the east side. Today's article focuses on the 122 N. Main address.

Before the current building was reconfigured, it was the P. Martin Dry Goods store at 118-122 N. Main.

Then in 1906, J.W. Jenkins started a music store with his sons and the building became a single store at 122 N. Main. The first photo shows that music store in 1922 during an auto parade.

Jenkins was at that location for 20 years.

In 1928, Jones-O'Neal Shoe Co. started in this location and was there until 1986 for a 58-year run. The second photo shows Jones-O'Neal during the 1946 Prairie Pow-Wow.

The third photo shows the Jones-O'Neal storefront in 1960.

The fourth photo shows Jones-O'Neal in 1975 with a different storefront.

In 1988, Payton Optical moved there after a long occupancy at the Wolcott Building, which was just being razed. They were at the 122 N. Main location for 29 years of their 70-year family run.

In 2017, Greg Payton retired and sold the business to the Specs Eyewear Co. of Wichita. The fifth photo shows the 122 N. Main location today, still Specs, with the property under the JGP Properties ownership.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Payton Optical - Vol. 110

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of Avenue D and South Main.

About the time salt was discovered in Hutchinson, 1887, the number of railroads expanded greatly. They all wanted a piece of the shipping revenues of salt. There were a number of small lines everywhere but, by 1891, most of the small lines in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado were brought into the Rock Island system.

In 1900, Hutchinson gave the right to Rock Island to put in a spur track at Avenue D and Main. The first photo shows the new Rock Island Passenger Depot at that time.

As passenger business increased, improvements were made to the depot. The second photo shows the depot in 1910 (by Bailey).

The third photo shows the depot with a steam locomotive about 1930.

The fourth photo shows the newly-constructed depot about 1960.

That's about the time Rock Island started running into money problems. Union Pacific tried to merge with Rock Island but was denied by the Interstate Commerce Commission.

After a number of reorganizational attempts and bankruptcies, it shut down in 1980. Union Pacific ended up owning much of the Rock Island system. The fifth photo shows the Union Pacific Depot today, still on the same land, just in a different position.

Union Pacific tried to merge with Rock Island but was denied by the Interstate Commerce Commission.After a number of reorganizational attempts and bankruptcies, it shut down in 1980. Union Pacific ended up owning much of the Rock Island system. The fifth photo shows the Union Pacific Depot today, still on the same land, just in a different position.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: Rock Island Depot - Vol. 109

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Avenue A and South Walnut.

The Salt City Business College was established in 1879 and, before 1900, it was located in a variety of downtown locations.

In 1903, G.L. Moody was elected president of the school. In 1904, it moved to the southwest corner of Avenue A and Main Street (where the old Isham's Furniture was located later). The first photo shows that location in 1905.

By 1916, the school had 700 students and built a new facility at Avenue A and Walnut. Not only did the school teach business classes, but it had athletic teams. The second photo shows the 1908 football team.

The third photo shows the 1926 girls basketball team.

In 1920, the J.D. Conard family secured ownership of the school and continued its growth. The fourth photo shows the 1940 school attendees in front of that building.

The upstairs held all the business classes, like the typing class in the late 1940s — shown in the fifth photo.

The sixth photo shows the exterior of the school in the 1950s with neon signage.

The school continued successfully until it declined in the mid-1970s and finally closed in 1979 on its 100th anniversary.

Leon Schartz Enterprises had flea markets there from 1986 to 1991.

In 1993, Kirt Poovey of Wichita purchased the building and had Ecowater Systems on the first floor.

In November of 2024, Jon Lovett purchased the building. The seventh photo shows the building at 100 E. Avenue A today (a night snow view), with Jon starting a renovation of the building to bring it back to life!

📷 Throwback Thursday: Salt City Business College - Vol. 108

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 200 block of South Washington on the east side.

Hugh Gass decided to start a welding and machine workshop at 212 S. Washington. The first photo shows that business in 1917.

He started teaching welding and, by 1922, moved to 114 S. Washington to start producing boilers. The second photo shows what the 212 S. Washington location looks like today with the Salt Salon business in there now.

The Superior welding business continued to flourish and by World War II, a partnership was formed with Hugh Gass, his son, Harvey, and Clyde Anderson. The business was transformed into a training facility for 2,000 welders for the war effort. The name was changed to Superior Boilers. With 10 employees, they moved to 3406 E. 4th.

The business has continued to grow. The third photo is a 1985 aerial of the East 4th facility as it continued to spread out its footprint.

Superior Boiler has recently merged with several regional and national companies to continue its growth. It now occupies buildings on both sides of 4th street. The fourth photo shows the business offices today, now Superior Property Holdings L.L.C. at 3524 E. 4th.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of South Main on the west side.

In 1906, automobiles started showing up in Hutchinson, but don't forget about motorcycles. They were becoming extremely popular too and dealerships were the key to distribution.

The Excelsior Company of Chicago was originally a bicycle builder. The company introduced its first motorcycle in 1905. The Hutchinson Cycle Company at 3 S. Main became the company's dealer. The first photo shows that dealership as well as the Oxford Cafe at 5 S. Main in 1912.

The 1912 Excelsior Auto Cycle had more horsepower than the 1911 model and they dropped the price, so it was selling like hotcakes. The second photo shows an original 1912 Excelsior Twin with belt drive.

A 1912 Excelsior was the first motorcycle to be officially timed at a speed of 100 mph. The Excelsior Co. was later bought out by Schwinn and ceased motorcycle production in 1931 because of the Great Depression. The third photo shows the 3 S. Main location today: the south part of Apron Strings, owned by Anne Dowell, and Keller Music at 5 S. Main, owned by David Keller.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutchinson Cycle Co. - Vol. 106

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of 1st and Main.

In late 1871, Charles Collins built Hutchinson's first hotel at 101 N. Main St. and named it the Reno House Hotel. The first photo shows that establishment about 1887 along with its raised wooden sidewalks to deal with the sporadic flooding of downtown by Cow Creek.

In 1910, the building was razed and the new Reno Hotel was built along with the Deluxe Theatre. The second photo shows that after construction.

Around 1920, the hotel moved to 26 W. 1st Ave. above Graber Furniture. The State Exchange Bank moved from 27 N. Main St. to this location and added an extra floor on top. The third photo shows this after completion.

This bank later became the American National Bank and was there until 1956. The building has housed many businesses since, including Orth's Cards and Gifts, The Lunch Box and Pablo's Deli. The fourth photo shows the long run of Allie's Deli there, when Dallas and Linda Fowler owned it.

The fifth photo shows the 101 N. Main location today, now remodeled into the Salt City Title Company with the building ownership under Krae L.L.C. of Lawrence.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Reno House Hotel - Vol. 105

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of 2nd and Main.

Houston Whiteside, a young lawyer, was one of Hutchinson's first residents and came here May 15, 1872.

By the end of 1872, he was the county attorney as well as the owner and editor of the Hutchinson News. After a fire destroyed the Stone Front Livery at 124 N. Main St., Whiteside constructed a new building in 1904. The first photo shows McBurney's store at its opening in 1905.

The building has housed many dry-goods companies as well as many health care professionals over the years. The second photo shows the building during the 1929 flood.

The third photo shows Newt Edwards Dry-Goods with Foltz Pharmacy and Health Care.

The fourth photo shows the Three Sisters store that occupied the building between 1949-1972.

The fifth photo shows the Reffner's Sporting Goods store that was there between 1975-1986.

The sixth photo shows the 124 N. Main building today, now occupied by the Sew In 2 Quilts store, with the building being owned by KJLS Management L.L.C. of Buhler.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Whiteside Building - Vol. 104

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the corner of 7th and Poplar in South Hutchinson.

In 1960, Ken Addison, manager of the Al Char Bowl, along with William Atkinson and several other Hutchinson businessmen, decided to build a new, modern bowling alley in South Hutchinson.

Bill Atkinson's construction company built the building and Ken Addison was its new manager. Herman Koop, who ran the Rambler Cafe, leased the snack bar. The first photo shows the new bowling alley upon completion at 120 E. 7th Ave. in South Hutchinson.

The grand opening was on Sept. 15 and 16, 1961. Professional bowler Carmen Salvino put on an exhibition. The second photo shows the pad pouring, while the third photo shows the interior floor laying.

The fourth photo shows the construction sign around the project's completion.

Riverside Lanes ran for almost 40 years and many remember its last efforts promoting "cosmic bowling" on Friday and Saturday nights. Riverside Lanes closed in 1999 after time had taken its toll.

The fifth photo shows the building today at 120 E. 7th in South Hutch, now South Hutch Storage, owned by Panther Properties L.L.C. of South Hutchinson.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Riverside Lanes - Vol. 103

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of 3rd Avenue and North Main.

The three buildings at 302-304 N. Main were built in 1900 as Hutchinson businesses first expanded north of the Santa Fe tracks. The first photo was taken in 1928 and shows the new Santa Fe Hotel and Cafe, owned by James Brown, at 300 N. Main.

This was the second Santa Fe Hotel in town. The first one was across the street and burned down in 1921.

The 302 N. Main address was the W.P. Beal Jewelers. The 304 address was the Iris Theatre, a dime-movie house featuring second-run films and westerns. The slanted floor faced the front entrance with projection from the middle of the theatre. William Fulton was the manager and it existed from February 1912 to May 1943. The second photo shows the 302 N. Main address even earlier in 1910 when it was the New State Cafe.

The third photo of the corner is from 1947 and shows the 302 slot as the Classic Barber Shop, the 300 slot as the M&amp;M Cafe, with #2906 Locomotive, one of the last of the steam locomotives of the Santa Fe Railway line.

The fourth photo is from 2017, and shows the 304 slot as Sarah's Catholic Book Store and the 300 slot as The Natural Alternative.

The fifth photo shows the corner today, with 304 being Thoracic Park Chiropractic, 302 being Main Street Yoga and 300 being Leu+Co, a plumbing, heating and a/c company plus property management services. The 300 and 302 slots are owned by Leuco Properties L.L.C. Logan and Em Leuenberger.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Santa Fe Hotel - Vol. 102

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 500 block of East Avenue A on the north side.

In 1900, George Updegraff had a drug store at 1 S. Main and his son, Robert, was a dentist upstairs.

Robert built a grand Victorian-style home that year at 528 E. Ave. A. The first photo shows that home at completion in 1901.

After George's passing, Robert decided to move and sell the home. Meanwhile, George Gano decided to move his milling and wheat storage business from Pawnee Rock to Hutchinson for the rail connections and purchased the 528 E. Ave. A home in 1904 for $7,000.

Gano was very successful in grain marketing and building grain elevators in Western Kansas.

By 1947, at the age of 70, he decided to sell Gano Grain Corporation to the Bunge Corp., a Belgium conglomerate, for $5 million.

In 1949, Gano died and his grandson, Nelson Hobart, inherited the home and lived there for about 10 years.

In 1975, Ralph (Doc) and Teddy Gingerich purchased the home and have lived there ever since. The second photo shows the house today, still in grand shape at 528 E. Ave. A.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Dr. Updegraff Residence - Vol. 101

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of Bigger Avenue and South Maple.

One of the earliest public grade schools erected in Hutchinson was the Southside School, sometimes called the Maple Street School, in 1887. The first photo shows that school at its opening.

It served for 36 years. It had six rooms and later added six more. A Mrs. Moore was the first principal. The second photo shows Mrs. Cockey's third-grade class in 1902.

In 1923, a fine new school was constructed on the same property, just east of the first school. The third photo shows this school, named Lincoln Elementary.

It had 16 rooms and an auditorium. Grace Eastman was principal. This school served for 49 years. The fourth photo shows one of the well-used student classrooms with desks.

In 1972, the current Lincoln Elementary school was constructed on the same property. The fifth photo shows that school building today, now 52 years old.

In May 2023, the school board voted to close Lincoln and merge it with McCandless for the 2024 school year because of the lack of teacher applications. Currently, Lincoln Elementary is preschool only.

The first photo shows that school at its opening.<figure>

 </figure>It served for 36 years. It had six rooms and later added six more. A Mrs. Moore was the first principal. The second photo shows Mrs. Cockey's third-grade class in 1902.<figure>

 </figure>In 1923, a fine new school was constructed on the same property, just east of the first school. The third photo shows this school, named Lincoln Elementary.<figure>

 </figure>It had 16 rooms and an auditorium. Grace Eastman was principal. This school served for 49 years. The fourth photo shows one of the well-used student classrooms with desks.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: Lincoln Elementary - Vol. 100

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of North Main on the east side.

In the early 1900s, Hutchinson had several movie theatres, such as the Royal, Deluxe/Strand, Liberty and Iris.

One of the earliest was the Midland Theatre. Built and opened about 1920 at 8-10 N. Main St., the Midland was managed by Edd J. Haas. The first photo shows the theatre in all its glory about 1930.

The second photo shows the theatre even earlier, about 1923, during an Armistice Parade.

It started showing vaudeville acts as well as cinema (silent movies). In 1926, talking pictures came about and vaudeville fell out of popularity. The Midland Theatre eventually closed in 1957. The third photo shows the last of the theatre and the entire quarter-block, including Montgomery Ward, the Toy Center and Spangler's, before demolition.

In 1964, this entire area was razed to make way for a new Woolworth's building.

In 1984, Anthony's Department Store took over the space.

By 2012, the Hayes family owned the building. The fourth photo shows the Hayes Home Furnishings business in that location.

Later it became the Main Street Events Center.

The fifth photo shows the 8-10 N. Main property today as the Furniture &amp; Mattress Clearance Center, owned by Kevin and Susan Rule.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Midland - Vol. 99

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 2nd and North Walnut.

On Aug. 17, 1882, the first telephone line was strung between the water mill at Avenue C and Main to the Stone Front Livery at 2nd and Main, about where Payton Optical is today.

In 1885, the first long-distance line was strung from Hutchinson to Arlington to Medicine Lodge. There were many phone exchanges granted, like the Electric Light &amp; Telephone Co. in 1885, the Pennington Telephone Exchange in 1900 and the Bellamy &amp; Burns Telephone Co. in 1901.

The Mo-Kan Telephone Co. began operations in The News' building at 13-15 E. Sherman on Aug. 31, 1889.

In 1897, Hutchinson was connected to Kansas City to connect with the Bell System. The first photo shows their new building at 101 E. 2nd in 1912.

The second photo shows the local operating board ladies in that building.

The third photo shows the toll switchboard operator ladies, also in that building, all in 1912.

The fourth photo shows the Bell building and the Ark Valley Interurban Railway terminal in 1926.

The fifth photo shows the Bell building during the 1929 flood.

The sixth photo shows the vastly-expanded Southwestern Bell Telephone building today at 101 E. 2nd, now under the AT&amp;T umbrella of St. Louis.

📷 Throwback Thursday: First Telephone Line - Vol. 98

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1800 block of North Plum on the east side.

In 1952, a group of insightful Hutchinson business men and women applied for (and were given by the federal government) a license to start the first TV station in Kansas.

Led by John P. Harris, who owned the Hutchinson News, and Bess Rickard, who owned KWBW radio, they constructed the KTVH-TV studio at 1800 N. Plum. The first photo shows the original KTVH building (from Roger Cornish).

The station went on the air July 1, 1953. One of the first staff announcers was Dick Cornish, father of Channel 12 announcer Roger, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 66. The second photo shows the interior news desk and camera.

In those days, staff was small and one person did a lot. Like Russell "Ernie" Dade, who played many roles. The third photo shows a contact sheet with many of the roles and commercials he did.

His most famous role was "Sammy Scarecrow," a children's show that ran four years starting in 1954. The fourth photo shows "Sammy" in character.

The fifth photo shows the Sammy Scarecrow club membership card.

In 1983, the station was sold to Ross Beach and Bob Schmidt, who changed the call letters to KWCH-TV and the main broadcasting was done from Wichita. The sixth photo shows the 1800 N. Plum facility today, now owned by Hutchinson Community College and used for HutchCC media productions.

📷 Throwback Thursday: KTVH - Vol. 97

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" is entitled "When the circus came to town."

In the early 1900s, the circus was an entertainment mainstay all around the country. Hutchinson had many come through here and often. Barnum &amp; Bailey circus was the most popular, but there were many others like Ringling Brothers, Cole Brothers and others.

When the circus came to town, usually on the Missouri-Pacific Railway line, crews would unload all the equipment and animals, and have a big parade down Main Street to the fairgrounds. The first photo is from 1905 with a circus wagon in front of First National Bank.

The next three photos are also from 1905 with the parade marching up Main Street.

The fifth photo is from 1907 with the parade wagons between Sherman and 1st, heading north on Main Street.

The sixth photo is from 1918, showing the elephants on parade between 3rd and 4th avenues on Main Street in front of Bloom Drugs and Pel's Variety Store.

Sadly, in May of 2016, circuses were forced to remove the elephants from their attraction, which caused attendance to decline dramatically.

Jan. 15, 2017, Ringling Bros. and Barnum &amp; Bailey circus announced its closing for good. An end of an era that was great American history.

 </figure>STEVE HARMON Hutch Post ContributorToday's "Throwback Thursday Collection" is entitled "When the circus came to town."In the early 1900s, the circus was an entertainment mainstay all around the country. Hutchinson had many come through here and often. Barnum &amp; Bailey circus was the most popular, but there were many others like Ringling Brothers, Cole Brothers and others.When the circus came to town, usually on the Missouri-Pacific Railway line, crews would unload all the equipment and animals, and have a big parade down Main Street to the fairgrounds. The first photo is from 1905 with a circus wagon in front of First National Bank.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: The Circus - Vol. 96

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of East Sherman and North Poplar.

Edward Wilcox owned a hardware store in Topeka in 1871. When he heard that C.C. Hutchinson was starting a new town along the proposed Santa Fe Railway expansion to the southwest, he decided to move.

In January of 1872, he came to the young city. Only five businessmen preceded him. He built a new hardware store as well as a large two-story home. The first photo shows that home at 134 E. Sherman after construction.

He was also the postmaster from 1874 through 1882 and a city councilman from 1880 through 1885. After Ed's death, his daughter Nettie lived there until 1909.

In 1913, it was turned into an apartment house and was known as the Bachelor's Roost.

In 1917, Johnson &amp; Sons undertakers bought the house and converted it to a funeral home. The second photo shows that conversion.

The third photo shows a funeral in process about 1930.

The fourth photo shows the facility with neon signage about 1935.

About 1990, Johnson &amp; Sons built a new facility at 300 E. 30th, sold the original property to the Foundation of Life Ministries and converted it to the McGee Chapel. The fifth photo shows that entity in January 2017.

On March 15, 2019, the chapel burned down. The sixth photo shows the aftermath of that fire.

The seventh photo shows the 134 E. Sherman property today, owned by Scott Marchall and now known as the Salty Cycles Park.
