
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 19 Hutchinson Community College used a balanced attack and a big second half to pull away from Cowley College for a 74-53 Jayhawk Conference victory Saturday at the Sports Arena.
Katie Duncan scored a team-high 15 points with four rebounds and four assists as the Blue Dragons improved to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in league play, their fourth straight win. Whitney Brown and Jamya McPherson added 13 points each, while KaMyra Barber finished with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.
After the teams were tied 15-15 after one quarter, Hutchinson took a 33-26 lead into halftime, then outscored Cowley 23-18 in the third quarter for a 56-44 advantage. The Blue Dragons opened the fourth quarter with a 13-3 burst, capped by a Brown three-pointer and a McPherson layup, to push the margin out of reach.
Hutchinson shot 45 percent from the field and knocked down nine shots from beyond the arc. The Blue Dragons dominated the glass 42-29 and assisted on 20 of their 28 field goals, with Barber, McPherson and Kaia Smith combining for 12 assists.
Megan Simon led the Tigers with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Amina Allen added 12 points and three three-pointers.
Hutchinson now turns to a top-20 showdown on Wednesday, traveling to face No. 1 Dodge City, which is 10-0 overall and 5-0 in Jayhawk Conference play.
