The Hutchinson Community College baseball team suffered through a rough day both offensively and defensively and dropped a pair of one-run decisions to the Barton Cougars to open the 2020 Jayhawk West season on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Held to nine total hits combined, the Blue Dragons lost 4-3 and 3-2. Hutchinson had its 10-game winning streak snapped and falls to 13-4 overall, 0-2 in the Jayhawk West. Barton ran its winning streak to 10 games and improves to 15-2, 2-0 in the West.

The final two games of the series will be played at Lawson-Biggs Field at 1 and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend.

GAME 1 RECAPLeading 3-2 after four innings, the Blue Dragons suffered through a tough fifth inning that ultimately cost Hutchinson in the opener.

Hutchinson starter&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2019-20/bios/linder_dawson_sh2m">Dawson Linder</a>&nbsp;looked to be gaining steam. But in the fifth inning, Barton parlayed three Linder walks and a Blue Dragon throwing error into a pair of runs to take a 4-3 lead. Andrew Stewart had an RBI groundout to drive in the tying run. High School Prep Scores from Thursday

The Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team has headlined every week since the beginning of the indoor season on January 18, by breaking records.

Normally for the men's team, those headlines are for distance runners&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2019-20/bios/kibet_andrew_btgu">Andrew Kibet</a>&nbsp;and Sylvestre Kibarar. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2019-20/bios/hillabrand_brett_wpj7">Brett Hillabrand</a>&nbsp;got to see his name in the headlines, too.

In the Region VI championship two weeks ago in Pittsburg, Hillabrand had a personal record in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 32.46 seconds. This is the third-fastest in Blue Dragon history, and he also placed fifth in the race.

Not only that, but Hillabrand also performed well in the Mile. He placed third while earning a season-best time of 4:21.61.

Additionally, Hillabrand ran the first leg of the 4x800-meter relay. The relay placed third in the region with a time of 8:02.03.

"We had a pretty good meet. Not just because of the records, but we had a lot of personal bests and seasonal bests. Overall, it was a pretty productive meet," Blue Dragons coach Robert Spies said.

Lately, the Kansas weather has not been exactly weather-permitting. However, Spies finds ways for his team to get the workouts they need.

"Distance runners have a little easier path through the cold and stuff because they can still train through that. But when you're a high-intensity sprinter, thrower, hurdler or jumper, it makes it almost impossible," Spies said. "In long jump, it feels like your skin and bones are cracking off when you try to do it. Cold weather makes it difficult for all involved, but distance has a little bit of an easier pathway."

Hillabrand and the Blue Dragons begin competition in the NJCAA Indoor National Championships on Friday in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Hillabrand, who hails from Omaha, Nebraska, has made a smooth transition coming to HutchCC. He got to know coach Justin Riggs in the fall during cross-country season.

"Coach Spies has a good hold on the program here – I like everything he's been doing," Hillabrand said. "Coach Riggs has put in new warm-up stuff for this season, and he's also helped me with my form a lot. He's a sprint specialist, so I know he can help me out there, finishing races."

The extra help from Riggs, who is Hillabrand's head cross country coach, has impacted Hillabrand's season so far, and he intends to continue his improvement.

"I've started off this season with quicker times than I did last year. Last year I PR'd at nationals, which is what we aim to do, so I'm right on path with that," Hillabrand said. "Each meet, I've been two to three seconds ahead of where I was before which is what I've been wanting to do. I just need to keep steadily improving."

The team's workouts can be exhausting at times, yet, Hillabrand's personality seems to lighten the workload by mentally pushing himself and his teammates.

"People tend to get down at practice when we've got like three sets of this, three sets of that, four of these and then a tempo, and I'm like 'Come on guys, get up. You think this is hard?' I'm always just keeping them going and not letting them get too down on the workout," Hillabrand said.

A culture like this is vital when running with such potential. Naturally, teammates start to bond and strong chemistry formed.

"We have a pretty good group to train with. We're all so close; pretty much a family. We know where everyone's at and we're always looking to out-do the other person. It's just a really great group of guys to train with," Hillabrand said. "Having that team competition definitely helps everyone, all around."

Hildabrand adds depth to Blue Dragon Runners

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Udoka Azubuike scored a career-high 31 points, leading top-ranked Kansas to a 75-66 victory over TCU to clinch at least a share of the Big 12 regular-season title. Azubuike was 13 of 14 from the field and also had 14 rebounds and five blocks Wednesday just days after hurting his ankle in a win over Kansas State. UNDATED (AP) — Memphis will go through the NCAA’s new independent investigation arm in a case involving the recruitment of star basketball player James Wiseman, who left the team in December. The NCAA has announced that the school's request to have the infraction case resolved through the Independent Accountability Resolution Process had been granted. Wiseman was suspended by the NCAA for 12 games early this season after his family received $11,500 from former Memphis player and current Tigers coach Penny Hardaway.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Cincinnati Reds hurler Trevor Bauer thinks his decision to tip pitches for a Los Angeles Dodgers batter during a spring training game and the resulting attention are good for baseball. The outspoken starter signaled pitches to Matt Beaty during a game on Tuesday. Bauer flicked his glove toward the catcher, signaling a fastball was coming. Beatty eventually lined out to center field. Bauer has been openly critical of the Houston Astros over their sign stealing in 2017 and 2018.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — San Francisco Giants right-hander Tyler Beede is seeking a second opinion on his injured throwing elbow. Beede left an exhibition game after one inning on Tuesday with tightness in his elbow. The Giants said Wednesday that an MRI showed he has a flexor strain and a UCL sprain. Beede went 5-10 with a 5.08 ERA last season for the Giants.

DETROIT (AP) — A college wrestler from the 1980s has sued the University of Michigan, alleging that a doctor molested him dozens of times despite the university knowing that he was a threat to athletes. The lawsuit is the first since victims of late Dr. Robert E. Anderson began to emerge two weeks ago. The man is identified only as John Doe and has accused the university of failing to remove the doctor despite complaints about him.

STILLWATER, Okla.&nbsp;– Oklahoma State seized the momentum with a 10-0 run with just under 9 minutes to play, as the Cowboys won their fifth in a row at Gallagher-Iba Arena with a come-from-behind 69-63 victory over Kansas State on Wednesday night.

With the win, Oklahoma State (16-14, 6-11 Big 12) snapped a 3-game losing streak to K-State (9-21, 2-15 Big 12) at home and swept the season series for the first time in the Big 12 round-robin era.

With the Wildcats leading 49-46 after a free throw by freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6407">Antonio Gordon</a>, OSU head coach&nbsp;Mike Boynton, Jr., called what became a pivotal timeout with 8:59 to play. Out of the timeout, Boynton called a play that allowed senior&nbsp;Cameron McGriff&nbsp;an easy dunk and ignited the 10-0 run, flipping the 3-point deficit into a 56-49 lead with 6:36 remaining. Following the McGriff dunk, senior&nbsp;Thomas Dziagwa&nbsp;connected on back-to-back 3-pointers and sophomore&nbsp;Isaac Likekele&nbsp;hit a pair of free throws.

Baker is one of three Blue Dragons to earn all-conference postseason honors after a 23-9 season that came to a conclusion in the Region VI Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday in Dodge City.

In addition to being named the league's top freshman, Baker also earned second-team All-Jayhawk West honors. JOSH BAKER – Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year; 2nd-team All-Jayhawk West<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/baker_josh_xj07">Josh Baker</a>&nbsp;is the first Blue Dragon Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year since Bashir Ahmed in 2015 and is fourth Freshman of the Year in the Steve Eck era.

Baker tied a Blue Dragon freshman record with 76 3-pointers this season this season, matching Derrick Drummond in 1996. Baker also tied Drummond for the third-most 3-pointers in Blue Dragon single-season history.

Baker led the Jayhawk Conference this season in 3-point efficiency at 49.4 percent (76 of 154). That mark is fourth-best in Jayhawk Conference history.

The 6-foot-4, 175-point guard from Temple, Arizona, was Hutchinson's second-leading scorer this season at 13.8 points per game. Overall, Baker shot 51.1 percent (143 of 280) and shot 80.6 percent from the free-throw line. Baker also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals.

Baker has a season high of 29 points when he hit seven 3-pointers against Independence. He had seven games of 20 or more points and scored in double figures in 20 of 32 games played this season.

Baker was fifth in the KJCCC in free-throw percentage this season. His 76 3-pointers are the eighth most in the league this season.

SAQUAN SINGLETON – 1st-team All-Jayhawk WestThe 6-6 sophomore from the Bronx, New York, did a little bit of everything for the Blue Dragons, ranking in the KJCCC's statistical Top 20 in seven different categories.

Singleton averaged 11.8 points per game while shooting 54.4 percent from the field. He averaged a team-high 7.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.5 steals with 30 total blocked shots in 30.8 minutes per game.

Singleton ranked third in assists, sixth in the league in rebounding, ninth in minutes played, 13th in field-goal percentage, 15th in blocked shots and 16th in steals.

Singleton posted a triple-double of 14 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists against NEO on November 12. He also had three other double-doubles this season. Singleton had three games of 12 or more rebounds.

Singleton's first-team selection marks the fifth-straight season the Blue Dragons have had a first-team all-KJCCC selection.

TYLER BROWN – Honorable Mention All-Jayhawk WestA 6-1 sophomore guard from Derby, Kansas, Brown was Hutchinson's third-leading scorer at 12.8 points per game. He shot 43.0 percent overall and was Hutch's second-best 3-point shooter at 36.4 percent, hitting 56 of 154 attempts.

Brown scored a career-high 26 points against Monroe College on February 15. He had a career-best six 3-pointers against Eastern Oklahoma State on November 1.

Baker named Freshman of the Year; Hutch places 3 on KJCCC teams

<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2019-20/bios/ogle_abby_pu1h">Abby Ogle</a>&nbsp;has one simple philosophy while in the basketball court – attack and full speed and don't look back.

That mentality helped her carry to the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team to a Jayhawk West championship this season and on Tuesday being named the 2020 Jayhawk West Player of the Year.

Ogle was one of five Blue Dragons to earn postseason honors by the Jayhawk Conference. Head coach John Ontjes was named the league's Coach of the Year. Ogle and sophomore&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2019-20/bios/vannett_makayla_q30y">Makayla Vannett</a>&nbsp;were named to the All-Jayhawk first team. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2019-20/bios/betham_brooklyn_e4z1">Brooklyn Betham</a>&nbsp;was named to the second team and freshman&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2019-20/bios/alford_tor-e_vqep">Tor'e Alford</a>&nbsp;was an honorable mention selection.

Hutchinson is 28-4 overall and was ousted in the semifinals of the Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons are waiting on word of they will make the NJCAA Tournament as an at-large team.

ABBY OGLE – Jayhawk West Player of the Year; 1st-Team All-Jayhawk WestOgle is the first Blue Dragon to win conference player of the year since Kirea Rogers in 2016 and is the fifth Blue Dragon since 2011 to win the award.

Always a staunch defender and player who always tallied plenty of hustle stats – steals, assists, rebounds – Ogle added scoring to her resume this season. Ogle averaged 15.4 points per game this season, which was seventh in the KJCCC this season.

She shot 59.2 percent from the field (third in the KJCCC). Her 37.5 percent efficiency from 3-point range (33 of 8 ranked third in the league. She shot 72.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Ogle ranks first in the KJCCC with 3.7 steals per game. She became only the second Blue Dragon ever to reach 200 steals for a career and just the sixth to reach 100 steals for a season with 114 this season. She also averages 6.4 rebounds per game (15th in KJCCC) and 3.7 assists (fifth in KJCCC).

Ogle had four double-doubles this season and led the team in scoring 14 times.JOHN ONTJES - JAYHAWK WEST COACH OF THE YEARNow in his 13th season with the Blue Dragons, John Ontjes was named the conference Coach of the Year for the seventh time, the first since 2016.

Ontjes battled multiple injuries – leaving him with only seven healthy players for several games this season – and still put together a 28-4 overall season, winning the Jayhawk West for the eighth time with a 19-2 record.

The 2019-2020 Blue Dragons led the KJCCC this season in several categories including scoring offense (75.7 ppg, scoring defense (51.8 ppg, field-goal percentage (46.7 percent, 3-point percentage (34.7 percent, assists (17.7 per game, defensive field-goal percentage (31.1 percent) and defensive 3-point percentage (24.6 percent).

The Blue Dragons rank fourth nationally in scoring defense.

MAKAYLA VANNETT – 1st Team All-Jayhawk WestThe 5-foot-6 sharpshooter from St. Paul, Minnesota averaged 13.1 points per game and posted the third-high 3-point percentage in the league this season at 39.0 percent.

Vannett is tied for the sixth-most 3-pointers in Blue Dragon single-season history going 94 of 241 shots from distance this season. She ranks third on the Blue Dragon career list with 188 career 3-pointers.

Vannett also averaged 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

She had career highs of 26 points and seven 3-pointers against Neosho County on December 4. Vannett had five games this season of five more 3-pointers.

Vannett moved into the Blue Dragon career Top 20 scoring on Monday in the Region VI semifinal loss. Vannett now has 807 points.

BROOKLYN BETHAM – 2nd Team All-Jayhawk WestA 6-3 transfer from Queensland, Australia, Betham stepped into the starting lineup right away.

After a bit of a slow start, Betham came on strong in the conference season, posting eight double-doubles, including a stretch of three in four games down the stretch to help the Dragons clinch the Jayhawk West title.

Betham averaged 10.7 points and 8.8 rebounds. She led the Jayhawk Conference in field-goal percentage at 61.8 percent.

Betham had 17 games of scoring in double figures and 10 of 10 or more bounds. Her career scoring high was 26 points against Garden City on February 8 and career-high rebounding game was 16 against Cowley in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament.

TOR'E ALFORD – Honorable Mention All-Jayhawk WestAlford missed seven games in the middle of the season. Upon her return on January 22, Alford his three 3-pointers in a win over Dodge City and became another scoring threat to help the Dragons down the stretch clinch the league title.

A 5-6 freshman from Derby, Alford averaged 10.8 points per game while shooting 40.5 percent overall. Her 40.1 percent 3-point efficiency was second-best in the KJCCC this season. Her 57 made 3s tied Heather Robben (2009) for ninth on the Blue Dragon freshman 3-point list. Alford also averaged 3.7 assists per game in 25 total games played.

Alford had back to back games of 7 of 9 from 3-point range in regular-season win over Barton and added five more four days later in a conference-clinching win over Seward County at the Sports Arena.

Ogle averaged 15.4 points per game this season, which was seventh in the KJCCC this season.She shot 59.2 percent from the field (third in the KJCCC). Her 37.5 percent efficiency from 3-point range (33 of 8 ranked third in the league. She shot 72.6 percent from the free-throw line.Ogle ranks first in the KJCCC with 3.7 steals per game. She became only the second Blue Dragon ever to reach 200 steals for a career and just the sixth to reach 100 steals for a season with 114 this season. She also averages 6.4 rebounds per game (15th in KJCCC) and 3.7 assists (fifth in KJCCC).Ogle had four double-doubles this season and led the team in scoring 14 times.JOHN ONTJES - JAYHAWK WEST COACH OF THE YEARNow in his 13th season with the Blue Dragons, John Ontjes was named the conference Coach of the Year for the seventh time, the first since 2016.Ontjes battled multiple injuries – leaving him with only seven healthy players for several games this season – and still put together a 28-4 overall season, winning the Jayhawk West for the eighth time with a 19-2 record.The 2019-2020 Blue Dragons led the KJCCC this season in several categories including scoring offense (75.7 ppg, scoring defense (51.8 ppg, field-goal percentage (46.7 percent, 3-point percentage (34.7 percent, assists (17.7 per game, defensive field-goal percentage (31.1 percent) and defensive 3-point percentage (24.6 percent).The Blue Dragons rank fourth nationally in scoring defense.MAKAYLA VANNETT – 1st Team All-Jayhawk WestThe 5-foot-6 sharpshooter from St. Paul, Minnesota averaged 13.1 points per game and posted the third-high 3-point percentage in the league this season at 39.0 percent.Vannett is tied for the sixth-most 3-pointers in Blue Dragon single-season history going 94 of 241 shots from distance this season. She ranks third on the Blue Dragon career list with 188 career 3-pointers.Vannett also averaged 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists.She had career highs of 26 points and seven 3-pointers against Neosho County on December 4. Vannett had five games this season of five more 3-pointers.Vannett moved into the Blue Dragon career Top 20 scoring on Monday in the Region VI semifinal loss. Vannett now has 807 points.BROOKLYN BETHAM – 2nd Team All-Jayhawk WestA 6-3 transfer from Queensland, Australia, Betham stepped into the starting lineup right away.After a bit of a slow start, Betham came on strong in the conference season, posting eight double-doubles, including a stretch of three in four games down the stretch to help the Dragons clinch the Jayhawk West title.Betham averaged 10.7 points and 8.8 rebounds. She led the Jayhawk Conference in field-goal percentage at 61.8 percent.Betham had 17 games of scoring in double figures and 10 of 10 or more bounds. Her career scoring high was 26 points against Garden City on February 8 and career-high rebounding game was 16 against Cowley in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament.TOR'E ALFORD – Honorable Mention All-Jayhawk WestAlford missed seven games in the middle of the season. Upon her return on January 22, Alford his three 3-pointers in a win over Dodge City and became another scoring threat to help the Dragons down the stretch clinch the league title.A 5-6 freshman from Derby, Alford averaged 10.8 points per game while shooting 40.5 percent overall. Her 40.1 percent 3-point efficiency was second-best in the KJCCC this season. Her 57 made 3s tied Heather Robben (2009) for ninth on the Blue Dragon freshman 3-point list. Alford also averaged 3.7 assists per game in 25 total games played.Alford had back to back games of 7 of 9 from 3-point range in regular-season win over Barton and added five more four days later in a conference-clinching win over Seward County at the Sports Arena.

Ogle named West Player of the Year; Ontjes Coach of the Year

The NJCAA Division III Men's and Women's Basketball Selection Shows will take place on Thursday, March 5th. The women's show will air at 1:00 PM ET and the men's will air at 2:00 PM ET. The NJCAA Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Selection Shows are set for Monday, March 9th. The women's show will air at 11:30 AM ET and the men's show will air at 1:00 PM ET. The NJCAA Division II Men's and Women's Basketball Selection Shows will air on Tuesday, March 10th. The women's show will air at 1:00 PM ET and the men's show will air at 2:00 PM ET.

The NJCAA Division I Men's and Women's tournaments feature 24 teams - 16 automatic district qualifiers and eight additional at-large selections which will be announced during the selection show. The NJCAA Division II Men's and Women's tournaments feature 16 automatic district qualifiers and the NJCAA Division III Women's tournament features eight automatic district qualifiers. For the first time, the NJCAA Division III Men's tournament features 12 teams - eight automatic district qualifiers and four additional at-large selections which will be announced during the selection show.
