DODGE CITY – The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team had control of its Region VI Tournament quarterfinal battle with top-seeded Cowley for the first 28 minutes on Sunday.

But with mounting foul trouble and shots not falling as readily as they were in the first half, the Blue Dragons weren't able to hold off the nation's top scoring offense in the final 12 minutes.

The eighth-seeded Blue Dragons had their season come to an end on Sunday as Cowley defeated Hutchinson 110-91.

The Dragons finish their season with a 23-9 record and don't advance to the Region VI Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2012. Cowley improves to 26-5 and will play Coffeyville in Monday's semifinals.

Hutchinson shot 67.9 percent in the first half (19 of 28) and built a 50-41 lead at halftime. That lead was still 70-62 when&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/singleton_saquan_s9fa">Saquan Singleton</a>&nbsp;hit a free throw with 11:52 to go in the second half. From that point, Cowley outscored the Blue Dragons 48-21.

The 110 points allowed to Cowley tied for the fourth most in Hutchinson history. The last time the Dragons gave up 110 points was January 25, 1992 against Seward County.

The Tigers shot 58.3 percent (21 of 36) and outscored Hutchinson 69-41 in the second half. The Blue Dragons shot 41.2 percent (14 of 34) and had Singleton,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/brown_tyler_348p">Tyler Brown</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/mitchell_d.j._eej6">D.J. Mitchell</a>&nbsp;foul out in the second half.

Rebounding was a huge factor in the game. Hutchinson was a plus-4 rebounding margin in the first half. Cowley turned things around and out-rebounded the Blue Dragons by 20 in the second half.

Mitchell scored 22 points in his final game as a Blue Dragon. He hit 9 of 14 total shots with seven rebounds. Mitchell closed his career with 882 points, which is 27th in Blue Dragon history.

Freshmen&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/king_clarence_pkcx">Clarence King</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/okon_jaden_bnxo">Jaden Okon</a>&nbsp;had 14 points each and Singleton finished with 12 points.

With six assists, Singleton moved into fifth place on the Blue Dragon career assist list with 261.

Hutchinson finished the game shooting 53.2 percent overall (33 of 62, going only 3 of 13 from 3-point range and 22 of 30 from the foul line. The Blue Dragons turned the ball over 23 times in the game.

Ridgnal Dalen had a huge double-double with 25 points and 19 rebounds to lead Cowley. The 19 rebounds were the most by a Blue Dragon opponent this season. Deng Bol and Shemarri Allen had 12 points and Cevin Clark had 16 points.

The Tigers hit 15 of 39 3-pointers, including 11 treys in the first half. Overall, the Tigers shot 42.5 percent (34 of 80) and hit 27 of 35 free throws. Cowley was just 4 of 6 from the line, but was 23 of 29 in the second half.

Blue Dragons fall in Region VI Quarterfinals to Cowley

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Fresh off a road win at Kansas State in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown, No. 1 Kansas took time off from the grind by hosting more than 100 Special Olympians at the annual Wilt Chamberlain Special Olympics Clinic Sunday afternoon inside historic Allen Fieldhouse.

Nine teams from Special Olympics Kansas spent more than two hours with the nation’s top-ranked team as the goals were lowered in Allen Fieldhouse. Following a group stretch, the clinicians broke up into their teams and rotated among stations such as ball handling, layups, free throws, dunks and scrimmages. The clinic concluded with the Jayhawks signing autographs for the Special Olympians.

“It’s great to get the Special Olympians here and our players and staff enjoy it and get a lot out of it,” KU head coach Bill Self said. “It’s easier to do after a win. I know sometimes we’ve done it after a tough loss but they always picked us up and made us feel better.”

The annual Special Olympics clinic began in 1984 by former head coach Larry Brown. It was then renamed for KU legend Wilt Chamberlain, who left money from his estate to sustain the program.

“This is a great event we do every year,” KU senior Mitch Lightfoot said. “We get to hang out with some very important Jayhawks, some people that really look up to us. We get to interact with them and it’s a very special event.”

Teams from all across the state of Kansas participated in the 2020 event. They included: Douglas County Jayhawks, KCK Kings, Shawnee Storm, Wichita Independents, Wichita Jayhawks &amp; Mustangs, Saline County Blue Thunder, Junction City Pacesetters, and the Butler County Blazers.

No. 1/1 Kansas (26-3, 15-1 Big 12) will host TCU (16-13, 7-9 Big 12) for Senior Night on Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. on Big 12 NOW/ ESPN+. KU seniors Udoka Azubuike and Isaiah Moss will be honored before and after the contest. The Jayhawks hold a one-game edge over Baylor (25-3, 14-2) in the 2019-20 Big 12 race with two games remaining. KU can clinch at least a share of the regular-season title with a win against TCU on Wednesday.

DODGE CITY – The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team's NJCAA fourth-ranked scoring defense lived up to its reputation on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament at United Wireless Arena.

The Blue Dragons held Cowley 25 points under its season scoring average and forced nine more turnovers than the Tigers normally average in a game as ninth-ranked and tournament second-seed Hutchinson eliminated eighth-seed Cowley 69-48.

Hutchinson (28-3) advances to the Region VI Tournament semifinals for the 12th consecutive season. The Blue Dragons will meet the Barton Cougars in the semifinals at 1 p.m. on Monday in Dodge City. Cowley ends its season at 20-12.

The Blue Dragons avenged a January 11 loss to Cowley when Shontrice Austin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 72-70 win over Hutchinson.

The Dragon defense on Saturday held Cowley to 28.6 percent overall shooting (14 of 49). Hutch held Cowley scoreless for the first 5 minutes, 13 seconds and without a field goal for 7 minutes, 35 seconds. The Tigers also committed 22 turnovers in the game.

Hutchinson also shut out Cowley's leading scorer, Seanna Boltz, who averaged 15.3 points per game this season. Boltz was held to 0 of 4 shooting.

UNDATED (AP) — Second-ranked Baylor has lost for the second time in three games since winning a Big 12-record 23 games in a row.

Desmond Bane scored eight of his 23 points during TCU's tiebreaking run as the Horned Frogs upended the Bears, 75-72. Bane drained a long tiebreaking 3-pointer with 4:42 left to put the Horned Frogs ahead to stay.

Lightning lose Stamkos for rest of regular season

UNDATED (AP) — Lightning captain Steven Stamkos is expected to miss the rest of the regular season and potentially the first round of the playoffs.

The team says Stamkos will undergo surgery for a core muscle injury and will be out for approximately six to eight weeks, including rest and recovery.

Stamkos has 29 goals and 66 points this season, both second on the team behind Nikita Kucherov (KOO'-cheh-rahv).

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Devon Dotson scored 25 points to help top-ranked Kansas absorb the loss of center Udoka Azubuike for long stretches of the game, and the cold-shooting Jayhawks held on to beat Kansas State 62-58 on Saturday for their 14th straight win.

Azubuike finished with six points and nine rebounds while playing just 20 minutes after hurting his ankle in the opening minutes of the game. David McCormack came off the bench to score nine in his place, helping the Jayhawks (26-3, 15-1) edge closer to clinching at least a share of another Big 12 championship.

Cartier Diarra scored 15 points and Xavier Sneed and Makol Mawien had 13 apiece for the Wildcats (9-20, 2-14, who were held scoreless for nearly 5 1/2 minutes late in the game. That allowed Kansas to score eight straight points and break open a 48-all game, then cruise to its 11th win in the last 12 games between the bitter rivals.

It was their first meeting since their game in Lawrence late last month ended in a brawl that spilled into the disabled seating section of Allen Fieldhouse. Several punches were thrown, and Kansas forward Silvio de Sousa took a stool and nearly swung it before assistant coach Jerrance Howard grabbed it away from him.

De Sousa is still serving his 12-game suspension, while teammate David McCormack sat two games and Kansas State players James Love and Antonio Gordon also were suspended. Both schools were reprimanded by the Big 12.

In an attempt to make good, the two teams met at mid-court after the National Anthem and shook hands.

The Jayhawks quickly ran out to a nine-point lead once the game tipped off, but their momentum slowed when Azubuike hit the deck holding his right ankle with 16 minutes to go in the half. Team trainers spent a couple of minutes with the 7-footer before helping him to the locker room, and Kansas State took advantage of his absence to whittle into the lead.

Azubuike returned with 9 minutes to go, but the Jayhawks couldn’t shake the Wildcats and led just 35-34 at the break.

They finally went ahead for the first time since the opening minute early in the second half, and coach Bruce Weber’s crew even pushed the lead to four points on a couple occasions. But despite Azubuike still hobbling around, the Jayhawks drew back even a couple minutes later, and it was still 48-all when Dotson hit two foul shots with 6:54 to go.

The Jayhawks, who at that point were 3 of 13 from beyond the arc, finally got a 3-pointer from Christian Braun to stretch the lead. Then, after Mike McGuirl missed a 3 at the other end, Dotson drove the lane as the shot clock wound down and got a leaning layup to go while getting fouled — he made it to stretch the lead to 56-48 at the final media timeout.

The Wildcats finally put an end to the 8-0 run when Diarra got a layup to go with 2:30 left, but the Jayhawks kept coming up with answers down the stretch, allowing them to hang on for their ninth consecutive road win.

Kansas struggled the entire way with turnovers, and Marcus Garrett had a particularly rough afternoon. The starting guard had three of them and didn’t make a field goal until his layup made it 60-52 with 1:20 left. But the Jayhawks showed their veteran poise when the game got close, and that should pay off when March Madness rolls around.

Kansas State hung with the Jayhawks the entire way despite Diarra playing with four fouls down the stretch and a massive disadvantage on the boards. The Wildcats did it by capitalizing off turnovers and hitting timely 3s, even though they were similarly sloppy on offense and struggled at the foul line.

The University of Minnesota defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. plays the same position as his father did for the Vikings. They are among the 330 prospects at the combine in Indianapolis.

Kim struggled with control of his off-speed pitches in the first inning, but he found his rhythm in the second. He kept batters off balance mixing a fastball that touched 95 mph with his curve. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Former TCU and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Trevone Boykin has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to charges from the 2018 beating of his girlfriend. Boykin and prosecutors agreed to the sentence in return for his guilty plea Wednesday to aggravated assault and witness tampering charges. Boykin's attorney says his client will be eligible for parole in less than a year. Shabrika Bailey alleged that Boykin broke her jaw in two places in the March 2018 beating. The Seahawks cut Boykin in the wake of the allegation.

He was hired by the Boston Celtics in 2015 and remains on the coaching staff. Allen's show-cause penalty is meant to limit a coach's ability to work in college sports after breaking NCAA rules.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team 
survived an early Allen 3-point barrage to advance to the Region VI Tournament 
quarterfinals for the 13th consecutive season on Wednesday night. 


The Blue Dragons dominated the final 16 minutes of their 
2020 Region VI Tournament opener at the Sports Arena, outscoring the Red Devils 
by 23 points over that span to pull away for a 92-64 victory.

The eighth-seeded Blue Dragons (23-8) will now play the 
region’s top-seeded Cowley Tigers (25-5) in the first men’s quarterfinal at 1 
p.m. Sunday at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City. Allen ends its season at 
16-15.

survived an early Allen 3-point barrage to advance to the Region VI Tournament 
quarterfinals for the 13th consecutive season on Wednesday night. 
The Blue Dragons dominated the final 16 minutes of their 
2020 Region VI Tournament opener at the Sports Arena, outscoring the Red Devils 
by 23 points over that span to pull away for a 92-64 victory.The eighth-seeded Blue Dragons (23-8) will now play the 
region’s top-seeded Cowley Tigers (25-5) in the first men’s quarterfinal at 1 
p.m. Sunday at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City. Allen ends its season at 
16-15.The Blue Dragons are now 41-8 all-time in first games of the 
Region VI Tournament (either first or second round) and it’s Hutchinson’s 199th 
all-time postseason victory. The last time Hutch lost an opening-round game in 
the region tournament was 2007.Leading by eight points at halftime, the Blue Dragon saw 
Allen score the first five points of the second half to pull within 43-40 with 
18:45 to play. With the Dragons lead 47-42 moments later, Saquan Singleton’s 
jumper with 16:11 started a run of seven unanswered points. Jaden Okon hit two 
free throws with 14:57 left and Hutch led 54-42. Allen’s Malik Hardmon, who scored an opponent-high 39 points 
against the Blue Dragons in a regular-season 87-80 win over the Dragons on 
January 4 at the Sports Arena, scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the 
Dragon lead to 64-54 with 10:33 to play. It was all Blue Dragons after 
that.Hutchinson outscored Allen 28-10 in the final 10 minutes. 
The Blue Dragons shot 58.6 percent in the second half (17 of 29) and limited the 
Red Devils to 34.4 percent (11 of 32). Hutch outscored Allen 49-29 in the final 
20 minutes.Sophomore Tyler Brown led a balanced offensive attack with 
his sixth 20-point game of the season, scoring a team-high 21 points with six 
rebounds, three assists and two steals. Brown had a pair of 3-pointers and was 9 
of 10 from the free-throw line.Freshman Josh Baker nailed 4 of 7 from 3-point range to 
finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Baker moved past Samajae Haynes-Jones 
into fourth place on the Hutch single-season 3-point list with 75 
treys.Freshman Clarence King scored 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting 
off the bench. He collected six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked 
shot.Okon just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine 
rebounds with two blocked shots. Singleton posted his third double-double of the season with 
10 points and a career-high-tying 13 rebounds. Singleton added three assists to 
move past John Sweet into sixth place on the Dragons’ career assist list with 
254. Singleton also had three steals. The Blue Dragons shot 50.7 percent for the game (34 of 67, 
going 7 of 20 from 3-point range and 17 of 20 from the free-throw 
line.The Dragons posted their second-highest rebound total of the 
season, 59-22. Those 59 rebounds tied for the ninth-most in single-game team 
history. The 22 rebounds allowed were a season low by the 
Dragons.Hardmon led the Red Devils with 23 points and eight 
rebounds. Trez Hankins hit four early 3-poiners and had six for the game in an 
18-point effort. The Red Devils shot 35.9 percent (23 of 64, going 8 of 29 
from distance and 10 of 20 from the line. Allen was 6 of 13 from 3-point range 
in the first half, but only 2 of 13 in the second half.There were 11 lead changes and eight ties in the first 15 
minutes of the game with neither team leading by more than three points during 
that stretch. Tied at 32 with 3:36 to play, the Blue Dragons scored 10 
unanswered points over the next 2:19 to lead 42-32 on Matt Mayers’ inside bucket 
with 1:17 left. Despite Allen’s sixth 3-pointer of the half, the Dragons led 
43-35 at halftime.Two turnovers on Hutch’s first two possessions of the second 
half turned into five Red Devil points and Allen trailed 43-40 with 18:15 to go. 
Leading 47-42, a three-point play by King, another king layup and two Okon free 
throws gave Hutch a 54-42 lead with 14:57 to go.King hit his only 3-pointer of the game with 12:04 to play 
to push the Dragon lead to 64-50. Hardmon scored on back-to-back possessions to 
bring the Devils back to within 10 and the Dragons exploded. Another King layup 
and a Majok Kuath dunk started a 20-8 Dragon run that saw the lead balloon to 26 
points at 84-58 on a Singleton layup.GAME NOTES
