MIAMI (AP) — The NBA has suspended its season “until further notice" after a Utah Jazz player tested positive Wednesday for the coronavirus, a move that came only hours after the majority of the league's owners were leaning toward playing games without fans in arenas.

Now there will be no games at all, at least for the time being. A person with knowledge of the situation said the Jazz player who tested positive was center Rudy Gobert. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither the league nor the team confirmed the presumptive positive test.

KANSAS CITY- The Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City is barring spectators from attending games in Kansas City starting Thursday.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said fans will be prohibited from attending the conference tournament beginning after Wednesday's game. Teams will have access to 125 tickets. Venue cleared after each game. No bands or cheerleaders or dance teams.

The priority of the Big 12 Conference is to ensure the 
safety of our students, coaches, administrators, event staff and 
fans.

After careful consideration and consulting with medical 
officials, other conferences, the NCAA and local officials, the Big 12

Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship games will be 
played with only family, friends, credentialed media and essential staff 
permitted in the arenas.

Emmert said in a statement Wednesday he made the decision to conduct both the men's and women's tournaments, which begin next week, with only essential staff and limited family in attendance.

No fans allowed at Big 12, NCAA tournament games

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The St. Mary's Bears traveled a long distance to make it to the 3A state tournament in Hutchinson and they relied on long-distance shooting to stake them to a lead against Haven, a school less than a half hour down the road. 

Six made threes staked the Bears to a 20-9 lead in the game's first 10 minutes. Then the Bears were able to get some baskets in transition to push the lead out to 29-14 at the half.

Haven didn't quit and narrowed the gap to 9 points after three at 35-26.

The comeback trail continued for the Wildcats in the fourth. The score was 43-40 St. Mary's with 90 seconds left and Haven rebounded a missed one and one and called timeout. Haven got a great look out of the timeout, but the Wildcats missed a point blank shot and St. Mary's secured the rebound and called timeout with 1:04 to play.

A wild scramble for the ball near midcourt resulted in St. Mary's having the ball back with 48.6 seconds to play and Caden Hurla hit two big free throws to extend the lead.

A corner three from Haven cut the lead to two with 30.5 seconds to play. St. Mary's threw over the top of the press for a Isiah Holz layup, but then Haven rushed down and Mario Quinero was fouled shooting a three and made the first, missed the second and the third and St. Mary's secured the rebound.

Holz then missed the front end of a one and one, but Haven was unable to cash in on the trip down. Hurla was fouled with 5.9 seconds left and it was double bonus time. Hurla hit both free throws and St. Mary's finished off the upset 49-44.

Haven's season ends at 21-3. Wyatt Carmichael had 13 for Haven. Benaiah Yoder had 10. St. Mary's was led by Holz's 13, Caden Hurla had 11. St. Mary's will face the winner of Burlington and Galena on Friday at 8:15 at the Sports Arena.

Beloit advances in 3A boys with 51-43 win

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Wichita Collegiate Spartans had a game on their hands through almost three quarters on Wednesday, but eventually their pace wore out Colby 58-46.

Wichita Collegiate put together a pair of 7-0 runs in the first quarter to lead Colby 14-9 after one.

Collegiate stretched its lead to 28-20 at the half. Sophomore Gradey Dick had 12 first half points to pace the Spartans.

Colby tightened things up with a 6-0 run coming out of the locker room and the battle was on. 

Five points from Jack Duarte and a steal and Grady Dick slam stretched what was a one point game late in the third back to an eight point Collegiate lead at 40-32 after three quarters.

Collegiate kept their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter and closed out their quarterfinal win by 12 points.

Dick led Collegiate with 21 points, Duarte added 17. The Spartans will get the winner of Beloit and Nemaha Central at 4:45 p.m. on Friday.

The three-game series was supposed to be played Friday through Sunday. Central Connecticut State's athletic department says team schedules are being adjusted. Connecticut had several confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday.

NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the deliberations told The Associated Press that if MLB can't play in front of fans at a team's home ballpark because of the outbreak, the sport's first preference likely would be to switch games to the visiting team's stadium if possible. The Mariners are scheduled to host the Rangers when MLB opens the season on March 26, but the Seattle area has been hit hard by the virus. MLB anticipates government officials will decide whether it is safe to play in front of fans in each city.

UNDATED (AP) — The deadline for applying franchise and transition tags to NFL free agents has been moved from tomorrow to Monday by the league and the players' union. The decision comes because the NFL Players Association's members are still voting on a proposed labor agreement the owners already have approved. That deadline was extended by two days to just before midnight on Saturday.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — The Ivy League is canceling its men's and women's basketball tournaments because of concerns about the spread of coronavirus. The four-team tournaments were scheduled to be played Friday through Sunday in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Wednesday Sports Headlines

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Top-ranked Kansas hasn’t lost since Baylor stunned the Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse in January, that run of excellence driving coach Bill Self’s squad to another regular-season Big 12 title and the top seed in the conference tournament.

Better not let that winning streak end any time soon.

The Jayhawks (28-3) know all too well their next loss ends a dream, whether that’s to win the Big 12 Tournament this week in Kansas City or the NCAA Tournament beginning next week. Kansas lost to Iowa State in the league tourney final a year ago, and didn’t even make the championship game three years ago, when the Cyclones beat West Virginia for the crown.

“It’s win or go home from here on out,” said the Jayhawks’ Devon Dotson. “I know all of us are locked in in that locker room. No distractions. We’re looking to do something special coming up.”

The tournament begins Wednesday night when seventh-seeded TCU (16-15) plays No. 10 seed Kansas State (10-21) and eighth-seeded Oklahoma State (17-14) plays No. 9 seed Iowa State (12-19). The winner of the latter game gets the Jayhawks in the quarterfinals Thursday while the TCU-Kansas State winner will play fifth-ranked Baylor (26-4, which enters as the No. 2 seed and knows that it could play its way to a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament with a strong showing.

“We did everything it normally takes to win conference and we came up short,” said Baylor coach Scott Drew, whose team has lost three of its last five after a school- and Big 12-record 23-game winning streak. “All year long, we’ve been banged up and we’ve been able to overcome. We’ll get regrouped, refocused for the conference tournament.”

The quarterfinals already set for Thursday feature fourth-seeded Texas (19-12) against No. 5 seed Texas Tech (18-13) and No. 3-seed Oklahoma (19-12) against sixth-seeded West Virginia. Only the Mountaineers (21-10) are likely NCAA tourney locks.

Iowa State is accustomed to playing into the weekend in Kansas City, winning four tourney titles in the past six years. But an injury to star guard Tyrese Haliburton early in the season coupled with other issues have left the Cyclones in a tough situation. They know nothing less than a championship means their season is over.

“We just hope to get some guys healthy, but we’ve been battling that for a while,” Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said. “It’s the best conference tournament in the country. We’re ready to go to Kansas City and see what we can do.”

Much like the Cyclones, Kansas State’s season spiraled downhill in a hurry after the loss of its core group from last year’s regular-season Big 12 champions. The Wildcats at least have some momentum heading into Kansas City, though, after Xavier Sneed piled up 31 points in a rout of the Cyclones last weekend.

“You feel good about yourself and now if it’s TCU or whoever, we’ve been close. You’ve got to come to play,” Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. “We’re going to have to play well, and our coaches do a great job. If we play hard and defend like we have and make some shots, we can compete.”

The Longhorns were once considered an after-thought in the Big 12, and coach Shaka Smart’s future seemed to be hanging in the balance in Austin. But they ripped off five straight wins before a loss to Oklahoma State last weekend, and that was enough to catapult Texas all the way to the No. 3 seed — and potentially into the NCAA Tournament.

Like the Longhorns, the Sooners, Red Raiders and Mountaineers all finished 9-9 in league play, and the strength of the Big 12 usually means that is enough to get an NCAA bid. But a win or two in Kansas City would help all their chances.

Texas Tech has been to the Elite Eight each of the past two seasons and made a memorable run to the national championship game a year ago. But the Red Raiders have struggled at the Big 12 tournament, putting together a 14-23 record — the worst among programs still in the league — and losing its only championship game to Oklahoma State in 2005.

“I’ve been around here for a while now. You guys understand that I just go one day at a time,” Texas Tech coach Chris Beard said. “We’ll get up tomorrow and we’ll try to win tomorrow. It’s just the way I’ve always done it. I know it’s not the sexiest of answers for you guys but I’m not going to sit here and lie to you. I don’t ever look any more than one day ahead.”

TOPEKA, Kansas — If Kansas lawmakers pass a bill 
allowing student-athletes to make money off endorsements, you might see 
the next five-star KU or K-State basketball recruits selling cars, shoes
 or soda.

<a href="http://www.sfltimes.com/sports/ncaa-presses-senate-for-guardrails-on-athlete-pay" target="_blank">Dozens of states</a>, including <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/sb474/" target="_blank">Kansas</a>, <a href="https://www.ozarksfirst.com/local-news/local-news-local-news/both-parties-support-paying-college-athletes-in-missouri/" target="_blank">Missouri </a>and <a href="https://oklahoman.com/article/5651462/oklahoma-legislator-files-bill-to-pay-college-athletes" target="_blank">Oklahoma</a>, are thinking about changing the rules since the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/10/29/774439078/ncaa-starts-process-to-allow-compensation-for-college-athletes" target="_blank">NCAA said</a>
 in October that it will eventually allow student-athletes to be paid 
for their name, image and likeness. These bills are stopgaps, aimed at 
putting rules in place should there be a period of time before national 
rules are approved by the NCAA or Congress.

It’s a question that’s been problematic for the NCAA for years; in 2016, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/04/us/politics/supreme-court-declconsider-ncaa-rules-on-paying-athletes.html" target="_blank">U.S. Supreme Court declined</a> to take up an antitrust suit filed by a former UCLA basketball player. California took matters into its own hands last year <a href="https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB206" target="_blank">with a law</a> to let students profit off their likeness, though it doesn't take effect until 2023.

Currently,
 student-athletes are ruled ineligible if they make money on 
endorsements. Missouri U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver has proposed <a href="https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/rep-cleaver-to-propose-law-requiring-colleges-to-pay-student-athletes" target="_blank">a national rule</a>
 that would have colleges directly pay athletes. The Kansas plan doesn’t
 go as far, instead allowing money from outside endorsement contracts.

Emporia
 State University President Allison Garrett urged Kansas lawmakers to 
approve the bill, but ultimately hopes it never has to take effect.

“This
 legislation in Kansas makes sense at this time,” Garrett said, “but the
 hope would be that there is that federal legislation.”

It’s a 
sort of begrudging endorsement from the schools. Kansas State University
 Athletic Director Gene Taylor wants to keep up the current system, in 
which student-athletes aren’t allowed outside endorsements deals.

“We
 would prefer no rules, honestly,” Taylor said. “Just let us continue 
that this scholarship is valuable enough. But that’s not the direction 
this is going, so we have to move forward.”

The colleges don’t 
want to be on the cutting edge, where they might run afoul of NCAA rules
 and trigger punishments from the league. But they also don’t want to be
 left behind if other states allow endorsement deals.

To walk that tightrope, <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/sb474/" target="_blank">Kansas’ bill</a>
 includes a trigger: It would only legalize outside endorsement deals 
for student-athletes after 15 other states have similar laws.

For schools in Kansas, the concern is that recruiting won’t be easy 
if other states allow athletes to make money but Kansas doesn’t.

“I
 think it gets very tough,” University of Kansas Director of Athletics 
Jeff Long said. “Without this bill passing, we would be placed at a 
disadvantage.”

The discussion comes at a time when KU <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/ku-denies-wrongdoing-response-ncaas-charges-recruiting-violations" target="_blank">is being investigated</a>
 for potential NCAA recruiting violations. It’s based on federal court 
testimony in which Adidas representatives said they made payments to 
recruits. The school didn’t address the allegations during a legislative
 hearing in Topeka, but <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2020/03/05/kansas-objects-to-ncaa-charges-in-response-to-allegations/111397794/" target="_blank">told the NCAA</a> that the agents weren’t working on behalf of KU.

Garrett wants to see enough controls in a Kansas law so the endorsement deals aren’t used as part of recruiting.

Lawmakers
 could take action on the bill later this session or continue work next 
year, according to Republican Sen. Julia Lynn, who chairs the Senate 
Commerce Committee.

Lynn said there are still a variety of details to work out, including how the endorsement deals would be taxed.

“Collegiate athletics is very complex. There are multiple layers there,” she said. “The money is really big in this issue.”

Republican
 Sen. Molly Baumgarnder wants to make sure there are enough protections 
in the bill, so athletes and their families know what they’re getting 
into with endorsement deals, especially when it comes to high school 
recruits.

“Agents are going to be flocking to high schools to try
 and enter into that contract,” Baumgarnder said. “How do the high 
school counselors, how do the high school coaches help that student that
 might be embarking on that next step?”

Smaller private schools, 
who aren’t major players in the recruiting game like KU, K-State and 
Wichita State are, are concerned about the types of endorsements that 
might be made available.

Some of the 20 schools in the Kansas 
Independent College Association have faith traditions that disapprove of
 alcohol and don’t allow it on campus.

But under the bill, the schools wouldn’t have any say in outside endorsement deals.

“A
 student-athlete could share his or her likeness with a beer company and
 the institution would have no power to limit such a contract,” KICA 
President Matt Lindsey told lawmakers.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner was hurt on his second-to-last pitch in Sunday's exhibition game against the New York Mets. There is not a timetable for his return. Verlander had a similar injury during spring training in 2015 and did not make his season debut until June 13.

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — The surgeons who operated on Texas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun decided not to wire his broken jaw shut. Calhoun was hit in the face by a fastball on Sunday. He is expected to be released from this hospital in coming days. Doctors haven't determined if Calhoun had a concussion. He tweeted that he's “doing well” and “can't wait to be back hitting homers soon.”

The bucks are without their top six scorers — including reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team earned one of the eight at-large bids on Monday for the 2020 NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship.

The 24-team field was announced on Monday for the women's national tournament, which will be March 17-21 at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.

The Blue Dragons (28-4) earned the No. 12 tournament seed after winning the Jayhawk West championship and advancing to the Region VI Tournament semifinals. Hutchinson finished No. 9 in the final regular season NJCAA Rankings.

Hutchinson will play the Tyler Junior College Apaches (23-9) in the opening round at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17. The Hutchinson/Tyler winner will play No. 5 Gulf Coast State (23-5) at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons make their fourth-straight appearance in the NJCAA Tournament. Last season, as an at-large team, Hutchinson advanced all the way to the national semifinals. The Blue Dragons make a national tournament field for the ninth time under head coach John Ontjes and for the 10th time in program history.

Hutchinson has a 19-11 all-time NJCAA Tournament record with six trips to the national semifinals and three national championship game appearances.

The Blue Dragons and Tyler have met once in national tournament history. Hutchinson defeated Tyler 87-77 in the 2014 NJCAA Tournament quarterfinals at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. The only other time Hutchinson and Tyler played was in 2000, a 48-45 neutral-court victory by Hutchinson.

Hutchinson was the highest seed of three Jayhawk Conference teams to qualify for the NJCAA Tournament.

Jayhawk East and Region VI champion Butler is the No. 15 seed. The Grizzlies will meet the 18th-seeded Salt Lake. Jayhawk West runner-up Seward County is the No. 17 seed. The Saints will play 16th seed Moberly Area in the opening round.

NJCAA Tourney Update; 16 District Champs named, 8 at-large picked at noon today

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Ashley Joens scored 15 points, including the decisive free throw with 0.9 second left, to help Iowa State stun No. 2 Baylor 57-56, ending the Lady Bears' 58-game regular-season Big 12 winning streak on Sunday. The Lady Bears (28-2, 17-1 Big !2) last lost a conference regular season game to Texas on Feb. 6, 2017. Their only other loss this season came to South Carolina in November in a Thanksgiving tournament. Iowa State (18-11, 10-8) took a 56-53 lead on Joens' layup with 37 seconds left. Juicy Landrum tied the game 14 seconds later with a 3-pointer.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Kansas center Udoka Azubuike has been selected as the Big 12 player of the year by the league's coaches. Baylor's Scott Drew was named coach of the year in the voting by his conference peers. The Big 12 awards were announced Sunday, the day after the end of the regular season. Azubuike is averaging 13.7 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. The 7-footer is also shooting an NCAA-best 74.8% from the field for the regular-season champion Jayhawks. Big 12 runner-up Baylor is 26-4 and spent five weeks as the nation's No. 1 team. The Bears also set a Big 12 record with 23 wins in a row.

PHOENIX (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss at least one more game after suffering a minor knee sprain during Friday’s loss to the Lakers. The NBA’s reigning MVP fell hard on his left knee but remained in the game before undergoing an MRI. He missed Sunday’s loss to the Suns. Antetokounmpo ranks third in the NBA in scoring with 29.6 points per game and fourth in rebounding with 13.7. He also averages 5.8 assists.

Hatton had a three-shot lead when he drove into the water on the par-4 11th into the wind.
