The same pandemic-related questions that have bedeviled professional and college sports are front and center for high school administrators across the country -- and they are far more complicated.

Setting up expensive, tightly regimented bubbles for professional athletes or setting protocols for thousands of college athletes who answer to a handful of coaches is not happening at the high school level. Instead, more than 13,000 districts, some of them resource-rich, many of them not, are trying to figure how to safely stage sports for some 8 million participants, nearly all of them minors.

Already some states, including Tennessee, Arizona, West Virginia,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.njsiaa.org/events-news-media/news/njsiaa-builds-return-play-plan-provides-updates-fall-sports-season" target="_blank">New Jersey</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://mailchi.mp/wiaa/fall-start-date-580444" target="_blank">Washington</a>, have announced fall sports will have at least a delayed start. Prep sports heavyweights like Texas, Florida and California all have big decisions coming up fast.

Mark Uyl goes through all the different scenarios, contingencies and endless concerns daily as the head of the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

“It’s been like walking in quicksand,” Uhl said. “You’ll go a week or two and it feels like you’re taking a step or two on solid ground where the number of cases is trending in a certain direction or some of the metrics that government leaders are looking at. Then you go to take that third step and it feels like you’re almost deeper than what you were.”

He and other high school officials insist the importance of education-based athletics makes it a puzzle worth solving. But it’s a puzzle unlike any of them have ever faced.

Safety in the year of the coronavirus is the overriding priority. But what does that look like? Empty stadiums and gyms? What about testing? Masks? Can high school-aged athletes manage social distancing? What about liability? Are extracurricular activities even worth the risk as school districts around the country face mounting financial concerns with increased costs for personal protective equipment and expected revenue shortfalls?

As the clock ticks closer to the start of the new school year, the uncertainty is compounded by the complexity. The fifty states plus the District of Columbia all have different governing bodies for prep sports, different priorities and different pressures.

“I think people realize how valuable the experience of participation is, and they want to give kids anywhere that can a chance,” said Mick Hoffman, executive director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

While there was optimism in June that competition might go on as scheduled in the fall, it has been replaced by pessimism in July as the number of positive cases has risen across the country.

Even in Texas, where high school football is religion, there is growing worry. Earlier this month, Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said in an interview with MSNBC that in his opinion it was doubtful high school football would be played in 2020. The decision ultimately rests with the University Interscholastic League that oversees high school sports in Texas, but the headline amplified the growing concern.

“We’ve got a lot of decisions to make. I wish we had answers. I wish there was a silver bullet. There’s not,” said Tim Teykl, head football coach at Alvin High School outside of Houston. “I don’t know if we’re going to have a football season. I don’t know if we’re going to have school. I’m going to continue to fight and claw as if we are. And then if not, we’ll do what we’re told to do.”

As deadlines loom in different areas, school decision-makers are doing jobs they never anticipated before.

Administrators check in with public health officials as often as they communicate with coaches.

Coaches serve as a front-line of defense, doing temperature checks and sanitizing equipment as they put players through summer drills.

Then there are the athletes, some of whom already had spring seasons wiped out.

“It’s a very emotional area for young people and their parents because the extracurriculars are at the heart of the school in many ways,” said Dave Gordon, superintendent of the Sacramento County Office of Education. “They’re the spirit of the school and frankly a lot of the reason kids stay in school.”

Aside from concerns about the virus itself, there is other fallout. Some schools were already facing budget struggles due to a lack of state or local funding. Now they face the potential of returning to the classroom with significant increases in costs, whether it be for protective equipment, sanitation or maybe just running more buses because of restrictions on how many students are on each one.

Extracurricular activities become easy targets for cuts when there are budget shortfalls.

“We are hearing across the country that schools are facing anywhere from 20 to 50% budget cuts, very dire straits,” Karissa Niehoff, executive director of the National Federation for State High School Associations, said during a webinar with the Aspen Institute. “State associations looking at anywhere from $150,000 to over $2 million in losses to support programming and tournaments and such. So we’re very worried.”

Important dates and decisions are coming up, especially in states with school starting in mid-August.

One of the biggest dominoes is likely to fall this week when the California Interscholastic Federation is expected to announce its sports calendar. The federation could proceed with the current schedule but it could also delay the start of fall sports.

Virginia said recently that&nbsp;none of its potential plans include football being allowed in the fall with a final decision coming later in the month.

But even reaching a final decision doesn’t mean there won’t be setbacks. Some states that permitted summer workouts have later had to shut down.

Among the most drastic options being weighed in some places is a sports calendar that doesn’t begin until January.

“Obviously that’s not the direction I want to go. It would create a lot of overlap, forced choices. It would make it very difficult obviously to play multiple sports,” said California federation executive director Ron Nocetti. “But the goal is to offer a season, if at all possible, for all of our student-athletes.”

Rinus VeeKay, Colton Herta and Santino Ferrucci along with Pato O'Ward, Alex Palou and Oliver Askew represent a quarter of the field, and all of them have been running near the front. That included the doubleheader at Iowa this weekend, where Askew and O'Ward battled for the podium on Friday night and Askew was in the mix again Saturday. They come from all kinds of backgrounds and walks of life, too. O'Ward is from Mexico, Palou is Spanish and VeeKay is Dutch.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have removed a "Chop On" sign that sat near an entrance to Truist Park as the team considers its stance on fans' tomahawk chop chant. The removal of the wooden sign came as the team changed its slogan from "Chop On" to "For The A" for the 2020 season. The team's stance on the chant has been watched closely since last year's NL Division Series. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ryan Helsley, a member of the Cherokee Nation, said he found the chant insulting. The Braves said they would continue to examine the chant after the season, and that process continues.

UNDATED (AP) — NFL players will be tested daily for the coronavirus for at least the first two weeks of training camp per the league's new testing protocols. The new policy was approved by the NFL and the players' union.

Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL chief medical officer, said more than one negative test is required before players initially enter the building to begin physical exams or any form of team activity. 

After two weeks of daily testing, if the rate of those positive tests falls below 5% among players and Tier I and Tier II individuals, as described in previously NFL protocols, testing would go to every other day. If the rate of positive tests doesn't fall below that threshold, daily testing would continue until it drops.

The new protocols were announced as rookies for Houston and Kansas City were set to report to camp Monday. Rookies for other teams begin arriving Tuesday.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets and Giants announced they will not have fans at home games this season "until further notice" because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The teams, who play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and have separate training facilities in the state, released a joint statement Monday after Gov. Phil Murphy announced an executive order limiting outdoor public gatherings to 500 people.

The Jets and Giants say the decision to not have fans - at least for now - was reached after discussions with Murphy, with the health and safety of fans, players and staff being considered.

The teams also announced that "out of an abundance of caution," fans will not be able to attend training camp practices this summer.

Blue Jays talk to other teams about sharing ballpark

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays are talking to the Pittsburgh Pirates about sharing a major league ballpark this season after Canada's government barred them from playing in their home stadium amid the coronavirus pandemic. 

Pirates President Travis Williams confirmed the talks and sounded ready to welcome the Blue Jays. Williams calls it a challenge but says if the Pirates are able to safely accommodate the Blue Jays, it will bring international attention to Pittsburgh. 

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins says the team is focused on getting into a major league facility and has more than five backup plans.

—San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler knelt during the national anthem along with several of his players before first pitch of an exhibition game against the Athletics in Oakland. Right fielder Jaylin Davis and first base coach Antoan Richardson also took a knee, with shortstop Brandon Crawford standing between them with a hand on each of their shoulders. Davis held his right hand over his heart and Richardson clasped his hands in front of him.

Allowed locations include the back of the pitcher's mound, behind home plate, on tarps in the stands and in the grass in foul territory down the first-base lines. Teams have the choice whether to make the ads real or project them virtually during telecasts. In addition, physical ads can be put on the on-deck circle. 

— Oakland Athletics left-hander A.J. Puk has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a shoulder strain. He planned to travel to Los Angeles to be examined. The injury also bothered him during spring training. Right-hander Daniel Mengden will move into the rotation in Puk's place. 

Two players test positive during early days of training camp

UNDATED (AP) — The NHL says only two players tested positive for COVID-19 during the first five days of training camp last week.

The league, in consultation with its players, is not revealing the identity of players who test positive, or their teams. The two players who tested positive are self-isolating per national and local health protocols.

A total of 2,618 tests of more than 800 players from July 13-17 were done by the league. Training camps opened July 13, with 24 teams preparing to compete in an expanded playoff format in Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta, starting on Aug. 1.

Teams are scheduled to travel to both hub cities on Sunday.

The NHL reported it had 33 players test positive during the period after the league paused its season in March to the start of camps.

—New York Rangers forward Brendan Lemieux has been suspended by the NHL for the first two games of the team's preliminary-round series against Carolina because of an illegal check that injured Colorado forward Joonas Donskoi in March. The NHL waited until return to play guidelines were in place before making a ruling. The suspension means Lemieux will miss the first two games of the Rangers' best-of-five series against Carolina, which opens in Toronto on August 1.

The NFL has offered to scrap all preseason games, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

The players’ association had sought no preseason games and the league had reduced the exhibition schedule to two games. But on Monday evening, the NFL said it would eliminate those preseason contests and also would offer players 18 days for acclimation, up from seven days. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the offer had not been made public.

Another part of the offer is to provide a means for players concerned about participating in training camp and/or games to opt out and receive a stipend.

The union has not yet accepted the offers. Should it do so, both sides would have taken a major step toward starting the season on time.

Earlier Monday, the league said players will be tested daily for the coronavirus for at least the first two weeks of training camp, per the league’s new testing protocols.

The NFL and the players’ union reached an agreement as rookies for Houston and Kansas City were set to report to camp. Rookies for other teams begin arriving Tuesday.

Players and all Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 2M or Tier 3 individuals must test negative two times separated by 72 hours using a nasal swab before initially entering the building to begin physical exams or any form of team activity. The tiers designate which employees can go where inside the team facilities.

After two weeks of daily testing, if the positivity rate of those tests falls below 5% among players and Tier 1 and Tier 2 individuals, as described previously in NFL protocols, testing would go to every other day. If the positivity rate doesn’t fall below that threshold, daily testing would continue until it drops.

“There’s no finish line with health and safety and I think these protocols are very much living and breathing documents, which means they will change as we gain new knowledge about this virus, as we gain new knowledge about transmission, as we gain new knowledge about testing and there are new tests and new techniques that come online,” said Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL chief medical officer. “We very much anticipate that these protocols will change.”

The NFL has sought input from other leagues that have already returned to action, including leagues outside the country. It’s not known how many positive tests would result in shutting down the football season.

“These are complicated issues which involve a lot of factors,” Sills said. “But suffice it to say we very much look at it from a medical and public health standpoint, and we want to make sure that first and foremost we’re creating the safest possible environment for our players, for our coaches and our staff, but that we’re also operating within the safest environment for each one of our clubs’ locations, which means ongoing and regular communication with the public health authorities in those areas.”

The league and the NFLPA already finalized protocols regarding team travel, media, and treatment response, and updated the facilities protocol to specifically address training camp based on recommendations from a joint committee of doctors, trainers and strength coaches formed by the league and players’ union.

“Our union has been pushing for the strongest testing, tracing and treatment protocols to keep our players safe. The testing protocols we agreed to are one critical factor that will help us return to work safely, and gives us the best chance to play and finish the season,” the union said in a statement Monday.

On Friday, the league sent players and teams an “Education Protocol” for camp which requires clubs to distribute joint educational materials and to conduct educational sessions for players, staff and family members.

“Everything that we’re doing is centered around the concept of risk mitigation,” Sills said. “We know that we can’t eliminate risk, but we’re trying to mitigate it as much as possible for everyone. We know that this is going to be a shared responsibility.”

Sills stressed the importance of responsible behavior away from team facilities. Unlike the NBA and NHL, the NFL can’t put its clubs in a bubble environment, so players and team personnel will have outside risk.

“What’s good for players and what makes players and their families safer also makes coaches, staff and teams safer and, quite frankly, it makes our communities safer,” Sills said.

The league spoke with the CDC, the White House coronavirus task force, a number of public health officials, infectious disease experts; and national laboratory medicine leaders to make sure its testing protocol would not have a negative impact on the country’s testing supply or the healthcare system.

Nicklaus, wife recovered from coronavirus

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Jack Nicklaus says he's recovered from a health scare.

The golf legend revealed during Sunday's CBS telecast of the Memorial that he and his wife tested positive for the coronavirus at the onset of the pandemic.

He said his wife had no COVID-19 symptoms, while Nicklaus had a sore throat and a cough. Nicklaus said they were home in North Palm Beach, Florida, from March 13 "until we were done with it" on about April 20.

Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, turned 80 a month apart at the start of the year.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Richard Childress Racing had a successful day at Texas Motor Speedway.

Austin Dillon stayed in front after a restart with two laps to go and beat rookie Tyler Reddick to the checkered flag. That gave Childress a 1-2 NASCAR Cup finish and quite a show for spectators spread out in the stands.

Dillon raced to his third career win and first since Daytona at the start of the 2018 season. He stayed in front on three late restarts, the first after an incident with 29 laps left that shuffled the fast car of Ryan Blaney to a lap back.

Joey Logano finished third, with Kyle Busch coming in fourth a day after he finished ahead of the field in two races. Series points leader Kevin Harvick was fifth.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is dealing with an unspecified health issue. Crosby left a team scrimmage early on Saturday and then was held out of practice a day later. 

Neither head coach Mike Sullivan nor assistant coach Mark Recchi (REH'-kee) offered any detail on what might be ailing Crosby. 

The Penguins have about two weeks to get ready to face Montreal in the qualifying round of the playoffs.

Walker, Volquez, Holland, Morrison make opening-day rosters

UNDATED (AP) — Philadelphia second baseman Neil Walker, Texas pitcher Edinson Vólquez and Pittsburgh pitcher Derek Holland have made opening-day rosters.

So have Milwaukee first baseman Logan Morrison, Cincinnati pitcher Nate Jones, Tampa Bay pitcher Aaron Loup and New York Yankees pitcher Luis Avilán.

The seven were among the former free agents the clubs had to make decisions on by Sunday, five days ahead of opening day.

New York Mets catcher René Rivera and Colorado catcher Drew Butera were given $100,000 retention bonuses this weekend, allowing those teams to keep them with minor league contracts.

Among those released ahead of the deadline were Philadelphia pitcher Francisco Liriano and infielder Logan Forsythe, Mets first baseman Matt Adams and Washington reliever Fernando Abad.

Released players remain eligible to re-sign with the teams.

— Nationals outfielder Victor Robles took part in his first workout of the summer following a two-week quarantine. Robles had some at-bats, ran the bases and says he should be ready to start opening day.

— The Tigers have announced that Matthew Boyd will start the season opener against Cincinnati. Boyd had been slated to start the opener in March and now will get the chance a few months later. 

Blue Jays looking at alternate sites for home games

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays want to play their home games in a major league ballpark this season. That's according to pitcher Anthony Bass, who says the front office is working to find a major league ballpark for the team. 

Bass said he spoke with general manager Ross Atkins and emphasized that players prefer a big league stadium. The veteran reliever added that players are willing to share a home venue with another team and make other sacrifices.

Canada denied the Blue Jays' request to play at Rogers Centre because the regular-season schedule would require frequent travel back and forth from the United States, where COVID-19 cases are surging.

The team's minor league options are its training facility in Dunedin (duh-NEE'-dehn), Florida, or its Triple-A affiliate stadium in Buffalo.

NFL players urge league to address health concerns

UNDATED (AP) — NFL players are publicly pleading with the league to address several health and safety concerns on the eve of training camp. 

The league informed teams on Saturday that training camps will open on time even though discussions with the players' union regarding testing for the coronavirus and other health and safety protocols are ongoing. Rookies for Houston and Kansas City are set to report Monday and rookies for other teams are due on Tuesday. Players for all teams are scheduled to report by July 28. 

Many prominent players expressed their thoughts in a social media blitz Sunday.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, whose wife is pregnant, wrote: "We want to play football but we also want to protect our loved ones."

And Saints quarterback Drew Brees tweeted, "If the NFL doesn't do their part to keep players healthy there is no football in 2020." He wrote, "We need Football! We need sports! We need hope!"

Hamilton wins 8th Hungarian GP to equal Schumacher F1 record

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has won the Hungarian Grand Prix for the eighth time to equal Michael Schumacher's single-venue record and take the championship lead. 

Hamilton's latest victory from pole position was as comfortable as the nearly 9-second margin over Max Verstappen suggested. The British driver's 86th GP win moved him just five behind Schumacher's F1 record of 91. 

Hamilton is also demanding more support from Formula One's governing body and urged other drivers to make more of an effort in the fight against racism. 

Some drivers took a knee and others again did not in disorganized scenes before Sunday's race. As in the previous two races this season, all drivers were supposed to gather before the national anthem to stand while wearing "End Racism" T-shirts. DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Jack Nicklaus revealed Sunday during the CBS telecast of the Memorial that he and his wife tested positive for the coronavirus at the onset of the pandemic.

He said his wife had no COVID-19 symptoms, while Nicklaus had a sore throat and a cough. Nicklaus said they were home in North Palm Beach, Florida, from March 13 “until we were done with it” on about April 20.

“It didn’t last very long, and we were very, very fortunate, very lucky,” Nicklaus said. “Barbara and I are both of the age, both of us 80 years old, that is an at-risk age. Our hearts go out to the people who did lose their lives and their families. We were just a couple of the lucky ones.”

The Memorial has no spectators, and Nicklaus sightings have been rare this week because of protocols in the PGA Tour’s return to golf amid the pandemic.

Nicklaus shared the news when the Memorial was coming out of a weather delay in the final round. The few times he has been seen, he was wearing a mask and keeping his distance.

Tiger Woods, a five-time winner of the Memorial, said he had known for some time Nicklaus had tested positive.

“The fact that they got through it and they’re safe and here and healthy, it’s all good news for all of us who are a part of golf and who looked up to Jack and (have) been around Barbara all these years,” Woods said.

Nicklaus had a remote press conference on Tuesday and said he would shake the hand of whoever wins the Memorial, a tradition at the tournament he created.

“If they don’t want to shake my hand, that’s fine, I’ll give them a fist bump or an elbow bump, but I’m not going to give them COVID-19, so that’s ... I wouldn’t put anybody in that position,” he said Tuesday.

He said again on CBS that he’ll shake hands if the winner wants to, but he would be fine if the winner doesn’t.

After a brief moment of indecision with Jon Rahm, it was a fist bump.

“I’ve been dreaming of that handshake many times,” Rahm said. “Well, it was a fist bump because of the situation, but still, how many people can say they got a congratulatory fist bump from Jack Nicklaus?”

Nicklaus said by having the antibodies, “theoretically we can’t get it and can’t give it. That’s a nice position to be in.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a June 30 update, said it does not know if people who recover from COVID-19 can get infected again. It also said even with a positive test for antibodies, “you still should take preventive measures to protect yourself and others.”

Canada won't give Blue Jays exemption to play in Toronto

UNDATED (AP) — There will be no Major League Baseball action in Canada this year.

The Canadian government has turned down the Blue Jays' request for an exemption that would have allowed them to play regular-season games in Toronto amid the coronavirus pandemic. 

Major League Baseball needed an exemption to a requirement that anyone entering Canada for nonessential reasons must self-isolate for 14 days. The team had previously been given clearance by city and provincial governments to play regular-season games at Toronto's Rogers Centre but needed approval from Canada's federal government.

In a statement, Canada's immigration minister said the government determined that the cross-border travel required for regular-season play "would not adequately protect Canadians' health and safety."

The team's alternate sites for home games include its training facility in Dunedin, Florida, which is among the states that are virus hotspots. They also could use Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York, which is home to Toronto's Triple-A affiliate and just across the Niagara River from Canada.

— Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman doesn't know if he has time to be ready for their season opener following a scary journey in his battle with COVID-19. The four-time All-Star revealed Saturday that he had a high temperature of 104.5 degrees early in his battle with the disease and prayed for his life. He said Saturday was his ninth consecutive day without symptoms, which also included body aches, chills and a temporary loss of his senses of taste and smell. 

— Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán (hehr-MAHN') says he is not retiring from baseball and apologized for suggesting as much in an Instagram post on Friday. Germán is serving an 81-game ban for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy last summer. He posted Friday night words in Spanish that translated to, "I've left baseball. Thanks everyone." But he wrote Saturday in Spanish and English that he was "very sorry for the unsettling post."

— Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu (leh-MAY'-hyoo) isn't sure if he'll be ready for Thursday's season opener after missing much of preseason camp because of a positive coronavirus test. LeMahieu finally reported to camp this week after testing positive at his home in Michigan last month. The three-time Gold Glove winner participated in his first practice Friday.

— Outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. has rejoined the Orioles after missing the start of summer camp following a positive test for the coronavirus. Smith hopes to be ready to play in Baltimore's opener at Boston on July 24. He tested positive when camp opened early this month. 

— Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann is going on the 45-day injured list because of a strained right forearm. Manager Ron Gardenhire said the right-hander doesn't need surgery and could return at the end of this abbreviated season. He went 1-13 with a 6.91 ERA last year and has struggled to stay healthy while with the Tigers.

— Former major league umpire Rick Reed died Saturday at 70. Reed first worked a handful of American League games in 1979 before eventually becoming a full-time ump in the big leagues four years later. He worked the classic seven-game World Series between Minnesota and Atlanta in 1991 and also received All-Star assignments in 1986 and 1998.

Rahm shines while co-leaders struggle at Memorial

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — The fast greens were to Jon Rahm's liking Saturday as he took over the Memorial lead at Muirfield Village.

Rahm began play one shot back before carding a 68, while previous co-leaders Ryan Palmer and Tony Finau (FEE'-now) shot 73. 

Rahm now enjoys a four-shot edge heading into Sunday's final round. He took control with four straight birdies on the back nine before closing with consecutive pars.

Danny Willett is alone in fourth place, six shots back and one ahead of Jason Day and Henrik Norlander.

NFL tells teams training camps will open on time

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL has informed teams their training camps will open on time.

League executive Troy Vincent sent a memo to general managers and head coaches on Saturday informing them rookies are to report by Tuesday, quarterbacks and injured players by Thursday and all other players should arrive by July 28.

The league and the NFL Players Association are still discussing testing for the coronavirus and other health and safety protocols. Union leadership expressed several concerns in a 90-minute conference call with reporters Friday.

However, under the collective bargaining agreement, the NFL can impose report dates.

In other developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic:

— Milwaukee Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer has confirmed that Eric Bledsoe tested positive for COVID-19, and remains cautiously optimistic the veteran point guard will be ready for the restart of the season. The coach's comments came one day after multiple reports indicated that Bledsoe said he had tested positive but was asymptomatic.

— The first exhibition games of the NBA restart will go a little more quickly than usual as players become acclimated to competition following the suspension of the season. The NBA is tweaking the rules for those initial matchups, going with 10-minute quarters instead of the usual 12 minutes.

— Edmonton Oilers defenseman Caleb Jones says he tested positive for the coronavirus before training camp. Jones said he completed his 14 days of isolation before camp started, but was held out of main sessions for the first three days as he tried to get himself back up to speed. Toronto's Auston Matthews is the only other NHL player to acknowledge a positive test in a media interview.

— Arizona has three positive coronavirus tests among 83 football players still on campus for voluntary offseason workouts. Two were asymptomatic and all three entered department protocols for self-isolation. Arizona has performed 366 test encounters including PCR, antigen and antibody testing among the players already on campus before the school paused bringing additional student-athletes to campus earlier this month.

— There will be fans in the massive grandstands at Texas Motor Speedway for the NASCAR Cup Series race this weekend. Sunday's race will be the first major sporting event in Texas in more than four months to allow spectators. It could be one of the largest gatherings of any kind in the state since the start of the pandemic. A state-approved plan would allow 50% capacity Sunday at the track with about 135,000 seats, but the crowd is expected to be closer to the 20,000 that attended this week's All-Star race at Bristol.
