HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson Monarchs (21-4) took advantage of 4 Mulvane Patriot Errors including 2 wild pitches that scored runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to come away with a 7-5 victory over Mulvane Friday night at Hobart-Detter Field in Carey Park.
The top of the Monarchs batting order with Luke Sartori and Taylor Barber along with Dylan Nedved finally got to the Patriots bullpen after Brandon Haggerty was brilliant for the Patriots going 5 and a third innings scattering 6 hits while striking out 6. But after Haggerty's 101 pitches, the lefty ace started to tire and Mulvane had to go to the pen. Monarchs Drew Reetz and Garrett Stephens both scored on wild pitches then Jake Steil and Clayton Chadwick scored on hits by Sartori and Barber to take the lead in the bottom of the 8th.
Treyton Randall picked up the win on 3 innings pitched by striking out 4 while pitching no-hits over those 3 innings. Cade Carnes took the loss.
The Monarchs closed out the 9th with Mulvane's Hilton Brown hitting into a sweet 6-4-3 double play executed by the Monarchs defense to end the game.
The Monarchs picked up a game on Cheney with the Newton Rebels getting the win over Cheney 8-5 in other Sunflower League Action. Cheney comes to town on Monday night to start a big show down four game series including a game with the Diamond Dawgs at Eck Stadium in Wichita.
The Monarchs and Patriots close out the series on Saturday night with a game supporting the Cancer Council of Reno County with the first pitch at 7 pm.
