WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — J’Wan Roberts’ dunk with 1.3 seconds remaining in double overtime gave No. 14 Houston a stirring 76-74 victory over Wichita State. 

It was Roberts’ only basket of the game and followed Wichita State’s Craig Porter hitting a tying 3-point shot with 5.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime. The Cougars took the inbounds and raced up the floor hitting Roberts for the uncontested game-winner. 

Josh Carlton scored 11 of his 23 points in the two overtimes, finishing 9 of 14 from the floor for Houston (22-4, 11-2 American). Porter and Ricky Council each scored 17 for Wichita State (13-10, 4-7) while Tyson Etienne added 15.

MIDWEST CITY, Ok. – One day after being held to a season-low three hits, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team unleashed an offensive onslaught on the Rose State Raiders on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons combined for 31 runs and 31 hits in Games 2 and 3 of a three-game series against Rose State. Hutchinson defeated the Raiders 17-0 in five innings in Game 1 and 14-2 in the second game to win the three-game series 2 games to 1.

Blue Dragon pitchers were equally strong on Saturday, allowing just two runs and seven hits combined with a combined 12 strikeouts.

GAME 1 RECAP McLaughlin's third home run of the season highlighted a four-run first inning. The Blue Dragons then exploded for a 10-run second inning.

The Dragons sent 14 batters to the plate in that second inning, the 11th time in the Ryan Schmidt era the Dragons have had 10 or more runs in an inning. Hutchinson led 14-0 after two innings.

Four different Blue Dragons had multi-hit games as Hutchinson racked up 14 total hits, including five extra base hits.

Blue Dragon Baseball's offense comes to life against Raiders

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.,&nbsp;— Ochai Agbaji recorded his 14th&nbsp;20-point game of the season Saturday night at West Virginia to help guide the Kansas Jayhawks to a 71-58 win over the Mountaineers at WVU Coliseum.

The win improved the Jayhawks to 22-4 on the season and 11-2 in Big 12 Conference play. West Virginia dropped to 14-12 and 3-10 in the league. The Jayhawks have a two-game lead in the loss column over Baylor and Texas Tech in the Big 12 standings. Kansas has five games to play, while Baylor and Texas Tech both have four.

Kansas improved to 5-2 on the road in conference games with the win over the Mountaineers and controlled most of the game Saturday night as the visitors. The Jayhawks led for more than 35 minutes of the game and outscored West Virginia 40-12 in the paint. Kansas also won the rebounding battle 49-32.

The Jayhawks used an early spurt to create separation and play with a lead. Tied at nine just more than five minutes into the game, Kansas went on an 11-0 run over 3 minutes and 49 seconds to take a 20-9 lead nine minutes into the game. Joseph Yesufu capped the run with a layup. Agbaji had five points during the run.

Kansas maintained that distance, leading West Virginia 31-20 with 2:58 to play in the first. But the Mountaineers had a run in them late in the half, which cut the deficit to six at 33-27 at halftime. West Virginia’s Malik Curry hit a jumper with one second left for the final points of the half.

In the second half, Kansas got the lead to 12 early in the half when Agbaji converted a layup to make it 42-30 with 17:10 to play. But West Virginia went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to two when Sean McNeil hit a 3-pointer to make it 42-40 at the 13:46 mark. The Mountaineers made it a one-point game at 44-43 when Taz Sherman nailed a 3-pointer.

The Mountaineers never got any closer, however. Agbaji hit a pair of free throws and then Yesufu scored a layup off a steal to make it a five-point game. West Virginia got the deficit to four shortly after, but from there Kansas controlled the game, leading by double digits for a good chunk of time. Leading by nine with two minutes to go, David McCormack and Jalen Wilson had the final buckets for Kansas to stretch the lead to the final deficit of 13.

Agbaji led the team with 23 points in 36 minutes. McCormack and Wilson both had double-doubles in the win, with McCormack posting 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Wilson had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Christian Braun also had 11 rebounds to go with nine points.

The Jayhawks return to action Tuesday night at home when they host Kansas State in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m., on ESPN.

🏀 No. 6 Kansas withstands West Virginia, 71-58

Murray State's offense came to life in one inning in Game 2 and then the Aggies had to hold off the Blue Dragons in a 5-4 win over the Blue Dragons to split the doubleheader.

Now 5-3, the Blue Dragons play a doubleheader against North Central Texas at Noon on Sunday in Gainesville, Texas.

GAME 1 RECAP Murray State scored two runs in the first inning and then the Blue Dragon pitching staff kicked into high gear.

After allowing two runs in that first inning, Munson retired 10 of the next 12 batters she faced. Munson stranded two runners in scoring position in the first and stranded a runner at third in the second. Munson induced a double play in the third. Munson allowed just one hit from the second through fifth innings.

Munson got the first out of the sixth before giving up a double and single to the Aggies. Wertz entered the pitching circle at that point and slammed the door on the Aggies with a pair of strikeouts. Wertz allowed a hit in the fifth and a leadoff walk in the ninth. Wertz then closed the game out in style by striking out the side in the 10th inning.

Munson received a no decision after a season-long 5 1-3 innings of work. She allowed six hits and two earned runs, but walked none.

Wertz struck out a season-high 11 in 4 2-3 shutout innings. She walked one and allowed just two hits.

Pitchers carry Dragons to 10-Inning win over Murray State

El DORADO, Kan. –&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2021-22/bios/lee_cecil_bxuh">Cecil Lee</a>&nbsp;hit a huge 3-point shot with 1 second remaining on the shot clock and sparked the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team to a strong five 5 minutes and ultimately a fourth-straight victory.

The No. 19-ranked Blue Dragons clinched an opening-round bye for the upcoming Region VI Tournament after a 75-66 victory over the Grizzlies on Friday at the Power Plant. This game was postponed three different times by wintry weather.

The Blue Dragons improved to 22-6 overall and 16-6 in the KJCCC, holding onto second place in the league with two games to play. Hutchinson travels to Pratt at 7 p.m. on Monday in another make-up game before closing the regular season on Wednesday at Garden City.

Leading 61-59 with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the second half, a scramble for a loose ball after a missed shot went out of bounds last touched by Butler with 1 second remaining on the shot put. With&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2021-22/bios/goodlow_nate_a9xm">Nate Goodlow</a>&nbsp;inbounding on the baseline, Lee made a dart inside, then cut back to the right corner. Catching shooting with a hand in his face, Lee swished the clutch 3-pointer to give Hutchinson a 64-59 lead with 4:40 to play.

Lee's triple started a game-clinching 14-7 run over the final 4:40 to help the Blue Dragons complete a regular-season sweep of Butler (20-7, 14-7), which had its four-game win streak snapped.

Kansas won its 21st game for the 33rd consecutive season, a streak that started in 1989-90 and is the longest active streak in NCAA Division I, with a 76-62 victory against Oklahoma State (2/14). West Virginia is looking to end a two-game losing streak after its 78-73 loss at Kansas State (2/14).

Kansas is vying to win its 11th league game for a 28th-straight season, a streak that started in 1994-95 in the Big Eight Conference era and is the longest active streak in NCAA Division I.

They will meet again Feb. 27 in a massive game in Waco, but in the meantime, every time they step on the floor will be crucial. The sixth-ranked Jayhawks head to West Virginia on Saturday, while the seventh-ranked Bears get a visit from TCU. Neither of those games against NCAA Tournament bubble teams will be easy.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 16 Tennessee visits No. 23 Arkansas in a matchup of two of the SEC's hottest teams. The host Razorbacks have won 10 of 11 and are ranked for the first time since Dec. 13 at No. 24. Arkansas is coming off a 76-57 defeat of Missouri and stands third behind the Volunteers, who have won five in a row. Tennessee topped No. 4 Kentucky 76-63 on Tuesday night to temporarily forge a second-place tie behind No. 2 Auburn.&nbsp;

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Tolu Smith scored 16 points, Iverson Molinar added 13 points and Mississippi State beat Missouri 68-49 in a game delayed 2 hours, 30 minutes due to travel issues for the Tigers. Mississippi State took its first lead of the game during a 10-0 run in the opening 10 minutes and led the rest of the way. Missouri didn't make a field goal in the final five minutes of the first half and trailed 34-23. Andersson Garcia's three-point play with 13:28 left in the second half put Mississippi State ahead by double-figures for good. Smith scored 11 points in the second half, and Molinar had nine in the opening 20 minutes. D.J. Jeffries had 12 points for Mississippi State. Ronnie DeGray III scored 13 points and Javon Pickett added 11 for Missouri.

BEIJING (AP) — The United States has gained two more medals at the Beijing Games.

American and two-time Olympic champion David Wise took home the silver in ski halfpipe with his first-run score of 90.75. The 31-year-old Wise was the only winner the men's event had ever known until he was beaten by New Zealand's Nico Porteous.

American Alex Ferreira threw down a strong first run, twirling his right ski pole at the bottom in elation before ending up with the bronze. 

Porteous overcame the swirling wind to win on a day when many skiers couldn't land their best tricks due to the strong gusts. 

— The last Alpine skiing race of the Beijing Olympics has been pushed back a day because of strong winds. The mixed team parallel event was rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday, the last day of the Winter Games. It was supposed to start Saturday morning and was delayed twice because of gusts of up to about 40 mph before it was scrapped for the day.

— Chinese organizers say a total of 97,000 spectators have attended medal events, less than two-thirds of the 150,000 predicted on the eve of the Olympics more than two weeks ago. The number was revealed at a meeting of IOC members by the executive vice president of the local organizing committee. Plans to sell tickets to international visitors were scrapped last year because of the coronavirus pandemic and the block was extended to residents of China in January.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Detroit Pistons rookie Cade Cunningham used the NBA's showcase weekend to demonstrate why he was the first player taken in last year's draft.

Cunningham was named MVP of the NBA's All-Star Rising Stars on Friday night while leading Team Barry to a 25-20 win over Team Isiah. He scored 13 points with six assists and five rebounds in the night's first game. Cunningham had only 5 points in the finale but made several big plays down the stretch, including a clutch 3-pointer.

Cavaliers rookie Evan Mobley was instrumental in Team Barry's victory, scoring 18 points — 12 on dunks — in the two games at his home arena.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Four-time NBA champion Manu Ginobili (MAN'-oo jih-NOH'-blee) headlines this year's group of finalists for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. 

Former All-Star players Michael Cooper, Tim Hardaway and Marques Johnson will also be voted on for possible induction along with NBA coach George Karl and WNBA stars Swin Cash and Lindsay Whalen. 

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins also is up for induction along with Old Dominion and WNBA coach Marianne Stanley, longtime NBA referee Hugh Evans and Texas high school coach Leta Andrews.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Major League lockout has begun to cut into the spring training schedule.

Management has canceled the first week of exhibition games through March 4 in the first public acknowledgement of the disruption caused by the lockout.

The announcement Friday came with the work stoppage in its 79th day, and a day after economic talks between the management and the Major League Baseball Players Association lasted just 15 minutes.

Negotiators are set to resume bargaining on core economics on Monday. MLB said members of the owners' negotiating committee will attend the session, just the seventh on the central issues of the dispute since the lockout began Dec. 2.

CFP to remain 4 teams through '25 after expansion talks fail

UNDATED (AP) — The College Football Playoff is set to remain a four-team format through the 2025 season. The administrators who manage the postseason failed to agree on a plan to expand before the current contracts run out. 

Executive Director Bill Hancock says the committee decided to abandon efforts implement a new 12-team format for the 2024 season and instead recommended staying with the current model. 

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-NO COMBINED FINAL FOUR

No plan for having men's and women's Final Four in same city

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Division I college basketball committees say there won't be a combined men's and women's Final Four in the near future. The unanimous decision was made during a joint meeting of the committees that concluded several months of exploring the concept of one city hosting a joint Final Four. 

The bidding process for the 2027-2031 Final Fours will begin later this year with the potential to look at holding the men's and women's Final Fours on different weekend. 

Ex-SEC chair to investigate Commanders owner Snyder

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has hired former Securities and Exchange Commission chair Mary Jo White to investigate Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder.

The basis for the inquiry is an allegation that Snyder sexually harassed a team employee more than a decade ago. The NFL says White will release her findings to the public, unlike the league's decision to keep results of a previous investigation into the team under wraps.

A league spokesman says Commissioner Roger Goodell will determine after the probe "any appropriate action" against Snyder, who last year was fined $10 million after a previous investigation into widespread sexual harassment and mistreatment of women by high-ranking team employees. Snyder also temporarily ceded day-to-day operations of the franchise to his wife, Tanya.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes own a piece of the NHL's Metropolitan Division lead after surviving a wild finish against the Predators.

Andrei Svechnikov delivered two goals and an assist as the Hurricanes handed the Predators their fourth straight regulation loss since the All-Star break, 4-0. Brady Skjei (shay) and Jaccob Slavin (SLAY'-vihn) each had a goal and an assist for Carolina, which is 2-2-2 since the break. Martin Necas (NAY'-chas) and Sebastian Aho had two assists apiece.

The Predators got back into the game by scoring twice with their net empty, but Svechnikov clinched it with an empty-netter. 

Frederik Anderson stopped 28 shots for the Hurricanes, who are in a first-place tie with Pittsburgh.

— Mason Marchment's first career hat trick fueled the Panthers' sixth win in six games, 6-2 at Minnesota. Marchment scored twice in a 2:27 span of the first period to put Florida ahead to stay. Anthony Duclair had a goal and an assist in the rout.

— Adrian Kempe's (KEHM'-payz) second goal of the night gave the Kings a 4-3 overtime win against the Golden Knights. TORONTO (AP) — Maple Leaf Sports &amp; Entertainment says it will discontinue the proof of vaccination requirement for fans entering its venues, beginning March 1.

MLSE owns the Maple Leafs, Raptors, Major League Soccer's Toronto FC and the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.

The move follows an announcement from the Ontario government this week that it planned to slightly accelerate plans to ease attendance limits at indoor sports events.

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. (AP) — Joaquin Niemann has set a 36-hole record at Riviera Country Club while taking a two-shot lead at the Genesis Invitational.

Niemann fired his second straight 63 for a 16-under total. He hit 6-iron to 4 feet for eagle on the first hole and followed with a birdie. He broke the previous 36-hole record set about 20 minutes earlier by Cameron Young, a 24-year-old PGA Tour rookie who birdied his last four holes for a 62. 

Young is alone in second, three ahead of Justin Thomas. Jordan Spieth (speeth) and Adam Scott are at 9 under.

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Three-time champion Bernhard Langer shot his age Friday to take the first-round lead in the Chubb Classic.

The 64-year-old German star had five straight birdies on the back nine in a bogey-free 8-under 64.

He has bettered his age once and matched it one other time on the tour.

Langer has six Charles Schwab Cup season titles and 42 victories on the 50-and-over tour.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Michael Andretti has filed an application to field a Formula One team starting in 2024. 

The filing to the governing body of F1, was revealed Friday on Twitter by Andretti's father, Mario. Andretti Autosport initially declined to comment on Mario Andretti's post. The team then reversed its position and confirmed an application had been submitted to the FIA. No further details were revealed. 

Britain relay team loses Olympic silver, Nigerian sprinter gets 10-year ban

LONDON (AP) — Britain's 4x100-meter relay team has been stripped of its silver medal from the Tokyo Olympics after C.J. Ujah's doping violation was confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. 

Ujah did not challenge the anti-doping rule violation, but CAS said he claimed to have not knowingly or intentionally doped. That argument was not accepted.

Also Friday, the Athletics Integrity Unit announced that Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare has received a 10-year ban for being part of what's been described as an "organized doping regimen" ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

EL DORADO, Kan. – Clutch performances by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2021-22/bios/kailahi_mele_18oy">Mele Kailahi</a>&nbsp;and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2021-22/bios/payne_natalie_lk3w">Natalie Payne</a>&nbsp;helped offset a cold-shooting night from 3-point range by the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team in a Jayhawk Conference victory on Friday Butler.

The Blue Dragons won their fourth-straight road game with a 65-58 victory over Butler at the Power Plant in a game finally made up after three postponements.

Hutchinson improved to 24-5 overall and 18-5 in the Jayhawk Conference with one game to play. That game will be at Garden City on Wednesday. The Blue Dragons complete a season sweep of the Grizzlies who fall to 15-11 overall and 10-11 in the KJCCC.

With the victory, Blue Dragon head coach John Ontjes tied Jim Littell for the second-most coaching wins in Jayhawk Conference and Region VI history with his 418th win with the Blue Dragons.

The Blue Dragons had an odd shooting night, shooting 34.3 percent overall for the game and just 4 of 35 from 3-point range. Inside the 3-point line, though, the Blue Dragons shot 59.3 percent (19 of 32).

Kailahi led the Blue Dragons with 21 points, going 8 of 8 from inside the arc and 5 of 5 from the foul line. Kailahi added nine rebounds. Kailahi had 13 points and five rebounds to help the Blue Dragons extend a three-point lead at halftime.

Payne was tremendous on the boards with 7 of her 8 rebounds on the offensive glass. That effort led to a 33-30 Hutchinson rebounding advantage with 14 offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points.

Butler scored the first points of the game, but the Blue Dragons quickly responded with nine unanswered points and a total run of 17-4 to build a 17-6 lead after a Williams' 3-pointer with 2:47 to play in the quarter.

The Blue Dragons led 22-13 early in the second quarter, but Butler put together a 13-3 run over a stretch of 7 minutes, 35 seconds and took a 26-25 lead on a Cowman three-point play with 2:58 to go in the half. The Blue Dragons got a Williams free throw and back-to-back transition baskets by Kailahi and Williams for a 30-26 lead. The Dragons led 30-27 at halftime.

EL DORADO, Kan. — No. 19 Hutchinson (22-6, 16-6) struggled on the glass in the first half against Butler (20-7, 14-7).

The Dragons faced a Butler team that had lost only once this season in the Power Plant. That loss came against league-leading Dodge City.

The Grizzlies outrebounded the Dragons 24-14 in the first half. Twelve of those rebounds came on the offensive glass and produced 17 second-chance points.

Hutchinson trailed 35-32 at halftime after Eden Holt hit his only three-point attempt. It was the only Butler three that found net out of eight attempts in the first half. The Grizzlies shot just 15% from distance with three makes.

Marque English, who scored 24 points with five three-pointers the last time these two teams met, continued his cold streak with zero makes in four attempts from deep. English is now 0-9 from three in his last four games.

Hutchinson only took five threes in the second half after hitting just 3 of 13 in the first half. The Dragons nailed 3 0f 5 in the second half, including a Cecil Lee three that turned the tide.

Kaimen Lennox had a shot blocked underneath the basket with under five minutes to play. He caught the ball on his way down and threw it off a Butler defender as they both fell out of bounds. His heads-up play saved the possession for Hutchinson, but with just one second to shoot on the shot clock.

Lee quickly took the inbound in front of the Blue Dragon bench and fired up a three with a defender in his face. The ball tickled the twine as the shot clock expired and gave Hutchinson a 64-59 advantage with 4:37 left.

The Dragons were down by as many as seven early in the second half before battling to a 55-all tie with 8:10 remaining.

The Dragons followed the Lee three with a Jacquez Yow And-1. Yow took the ball on a give-and-go in the paint and scored through contact. His free throw put Hutchinson up nine with 2:21 left.

The Dragons made their first 18 free throws and finished the contest 23 of 27 (85.2%).

Butler mustered just 67.7% from the charity stripe.

Hutchinson allowed only three offensive rebounds in the second half and held Butler to only one more second-chance point.

The Dragons evened the rebound count at 38 after a 10-rebound deficit in the first 20 minutes.

Angelo Stuart added to his three-point record by making three triples out of four attempts. He was 6 of 12 overall with 19 points and five rebounds.

Kaimen Lennox scored 15 while Nate Goodlow added 12. Goodlow also had nine boards (four offensive) and four assists.
