IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa athletic department has announced donations for a new wrestling training facility next to Carver-Hawkeye Arena have gone past the $25 million mark. Since launching the Carver Circle campaign nearly two years ago, a total of 225 supporters have donated to the project. Construction on the $26.5 million facility is expected to begin in June. The 38,500-square-foot building will have a tunnel connecting it to Carver-Hawkeye and will nearly double the amount of training space and establish a street-level hall of champions honoring Iowa wrestlers.

UNDATED (AP) — Two-time major champion Zach Johnson is taking over as Ryder Cup captain, leading an American side trying to end 30 years without a victory on European soil. Three people with knowledge of the decision confirmed the move to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the PGA of America has yet to announce Johnson's selection. Johnson played on five Ryder Cup teams and was an assistant on the last two teams. The Americans are coming off a record rout over Europe last September in Whistling Straits. Johnson will try to lead a U.S. team that has not won in Europe since 1993. The 2023 matches are at Marco Simone in Italy.

UNDATED (AP) — Seventh-ranked Duke has avenged its Feb. 7 loss to Virginia.

A.J. Griffin scored eight of his 13 points in the final four minutes of the Blue Devils' 65-61 victory over the Cavaliers. Griffin hit back-to-back 3-pointers and a layup down the stretch to help the Blue Devils move to 24-4 overall, 14-3 in the ACC.

Jeremy Roach had a team-high 15 points for Duke. Trevor Keels added 13, three coming in the final minute.

— Jordan Davis sank a jumper with 2:18 left to give No. 13 Wisconsin the lead en route to a 68-67 triumph over Minnesota. Steven Crowl had 20 points to lead the Badgers, while Tyler Wahl chipped in 12 points and nine boards. The Badgers are 22-5 overall and 13-4 in the Big Ten. 

— Kyler Edwards scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half of 14th-ranked Houston's 81-67 downing of Tulane. Taze Moore punctuated his 18-point performance with a two-handed alley-oop dunk with just more than a minute remaining. A line is publicly drawn as players and owners meet again

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Major League Baseball says the regular season will be shortened if a new collective bargaining agreement isn't in place by Monday. 

Locked-out baseball players and team owners met for a third straight day Wednesday in an attempt to reach a deal that would salvage opening day on March 31. The announcement by management comes amid little negotiating progress with the lockout in its 84th day.

Players have not accepted Monday as a deadline and have suggested any missed games could be made up as part of doubleheaders, a method MLB said it will not agree to.

The union told MLB that if games are missed and salaries are lost, clubs should not expect players to agree to management's proposals to expand the postseason and to allow advertisements on uniforms and helmets.

MLB's only new offer to players Wednesday was to increase the minimum salary by an additional $10,000 a year. MLB increased its proposed minimum for this year to $640,000, with the figure rising by $10,000 in each additional season of a five-year agreement. Players have asked for $775,000 in 2022, with $30,000 jumps each season.

The two sides are facing what management says is a Monday deadline for a deal that would allow the season to start as scheduled. 

Former Mariners, White Sox 2B Julio Cruz dies at age 67

SEATTLE (AP) — Former major league infielder Julio Cruz has died at 67.

Cruz was an original Seattle Mariners player from their inaugural season who later became a Spanish-language broadcaster for the franchise. The switch-hitting second baseman played 10 seasons total in the majors, including parts of seven with the Mariners.

Cruz was traded to Chicago midway through the 1983 season and sparked the White Sox to the AL West title that year. 

Packers staying patient with Rodgers decision

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst (GOOT'-ehn-koonst) says he's not giving Aaron Rodgers any deadlines on when to decide on a possible return and he believes the four-time MVP will reach a resolution soon. 

Rodgers has said he hasn't made up his mind regarding his plans for next season and hasn't ruled out returning to the Packers, retiring or requesting a trade. He has said he'd like to make a decision by the time the free agency period starts next month, giving the Packers enough time to prepare for life with or without him.

UNDATED (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers say center Jusuf Nurkic (YOO'-suhf NUR'-kihch) will be sidelined for at least four weeks because of left foot plantar fasciitis. 

The team said the condition has been bothering Nurkic since September. 

Nurkic has started 56 games this season, averaging 15 points and 11.1 rebounds. He has 30 double-doubles. 

— The Cavaliers have promoted assistant general manager Mike Gansey to GM. Gansey has been with the Cavs since 2011. He will have an increased role in draft preparations while working with Koby Altman, who was recently promoted from GM to president of basketball operations. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche did just fine without top-line forward Nathan MacKinnon.

Gabriel Landeskog (LAN'-dehs-kahg) notched his 24th and 25th goals of the season as the Avalanche dumped the Red Wings, 5-2 in Detroit. Nazem Kadri (NA'-zehm KA'-dree) registered his 22nd goal of the season for the Avs, who also got tallies from Tyon Jost and Valeri Nichushkin (vah-LEHR'-ee nih-CHOOS'-kihn).

Alex Newhook, Mikko Rantanen and Devon Toews (deh-VAHN' tayvz) each had two assists as Colorado improved to an NHL-best 37-10-4.

MacKinnon missed the game with a lower-body issue.

— Corey Perry's 400th career goal was the eventual game-winner as the Lightning beat the Oilers, 5-3. Perry made it 4-1 in the second period to help Tampa Bay overcome Connor McDavid's two goals. Pat Maroon, Steven Stamkos, Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov (KOO'-cheh-rahv) also scored for the Lightning, who were coming off a seven-day break. 

— The Stars pulled out a 3-2 win over the Jets as Tyler Seguin (SAY'-gihn) scored 54 seconds into overtime on a play that required a review. Seguin's shot in transition was stopped by Connor Hellebuyck (HEH'-leh-buhk), and the goalie reached for the puck in midair as Seguin sent it back toward the goal. Seguin and Jamie Benn each had a goal and an assist for Dallas.

— Viktor Arvidsson scored his second goal of the game with 3:39 remaining to give the Kings a 3-2 victory over the Coyotes. The Kings have won five straight road games and are 7-0-2 in their past nine, with the last two coming in Arizona. Blake Lizotte (lih-ZAHT') also scored for the Kings and Cal Petersen made 17 saves for his second consecutive win over Arizona.

— The Canadiens have their first four-game winning streak in three years after Nick Suzuki scored twice in a 4-0 shutout of the Sabres. Suzuki tallied on a penalty shot and had an assist to back Samuel Montembeault, who turned back 32 shots in his first NHL whitewash. Cole Caufield and Jake Evans completed the scoring for Montreal.

Blackhawks forward Khaira has season-ending back surgery

UNDATED (AP) — Chicago Blackhawks forward Jujhar Khaira (JOO'-jehr KEHR'-ah) will miss the rest of the season after he had surgery on his lower back. Khaira had the operation yesterday, and team physician Michael Terry says he is expected to be sidelined for 10 to 12 weeks. The 27-year-old Khaira had three goals and no assists in 27 games in his first season with the Blackhawks. 

— Maple Leafs prospect Rodion Amirov has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas says the 20-year-old Russian winger is undergoing treatment in Germany and will not return for the remainder of the season. Agent Dan Milstein said Amirov is skating three times a week and working out daily while with his family in Germany having treatment. 

Monahan: Players tempted by Saudi tour need to make up minds

UNDATED (AP) — PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has told players in a meeting at the Honda Classic that anyone who joins a rival league will be off the PGA Tour and shouldn't expect to return. 

Tuesday's meeting had been scheduled weeks in advance, but it began just minutes after Phil Mickelson released a statement in which he apologized for "reckless" remarks about the Saudis and praised Greg Norman's LIV Golf Investments for sharing his goal of making golf better. Monahan declined to comment when asked if Mickelson had been suspended or faces punishment.

Zverev kicked out of Mexican Open after angry outburst

UNDATED (AP) — Third-ranked Alexander Zverev has been thrown out of the Mexican Open for violently smashing his racket on the umpire's chair moments after losing a doubles match. 

The incident took place Tuesday night after Zverev and Marcelo Melo lost to Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 in Acapulco. Zverev struck the umpire's chair three times, sat for a moment, then got back up and yelled at the umpire. He struck the chair once more with his racket as the umpire climbed down. 

— A man who was found guilty of stalking U.S. Open tennis champion Emma Raducanu (ra-doo-KA'-noo) has been given a five-year restraining order. Amrit Magar also has been sentenced to an 18-month community service order that includes 200 hours of unpaid work. He will be under curfew for eight weeks and monitored by an electronic tag. 

Record-low numbers for Olympic broadcasts

NEW YORK (AP) — NBC says the just-completed Beijing Olympics reached an average combined audience of 11.4 million people in prime time on the main network, the USA cable network and Peacock streaming service. That's the lowest-ever American audience for any Olympics, and down 42% from the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018.

Nielsen says the prime time telecasts on NBC alone reached an average of 9.3 million viewers, down 48% from South Korea.

Kaepernick launching initiative for secondary autopsies

UNDATED (AP) — Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick (KAP'-ur-nihk) is launching an initiative through his Know Your Rights Camp that will offer free, secondary autopsies to family members of anyone whose death is "police-related." 

The goal of the initiative is to eliminate concerns about reliability and objectivity of the first autopsy. 

Kaepernick led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl following the 2012 season. He last played in the NFL in 2016, the year he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice.

The KJCCC basketball regular season has been completed, and pairings and brackets are set for the 2022 NJCAA Division I basketball tournaments.&nbsp; 

The first two rounds will be hosted at the highest seeds home sites, with the semifinals and finals held at the Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina.

Game times are not yet determined for all games, but as they are finalized, they will be posted on the conference website, and new brackets will be distributed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — No. 21 Hutchinson (23-7, 17-7) faced a 44-31 deficit with 6:38 left before the half Wednesday night.&nbsp;

The Dragons battled back within four by halftime thanks to a Cecil Lee steal and a half-court buzzer beater from Angelo Stuart.

Behind Jacquez Yow's career night, the Dragons trailed by one with two minutes left.&nbsp;

Kaimen Lennox scored off an inbound to give Hutchinson the lead with 1:26 remaining.

Stuart hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to stretch the lead to three.&nbsp;

Stuart was called for a foul on the other end. The Busters made the first free throw and missed the second. Garden City (21-9, 15-9) gathered the offensive board on the miss and the Dragons fouled again.&nbsp;

With 13.4 seconds remaining, Garden City once again went 1 of 2.

Hutchinson had to inbound against full-court pressure. Stuart stumbled when he received the pass and turned the ball over on a travel.&nbsp;

With 4.5 seconds left, Cecil Lee fouled Mo Diarra as he backed down into the paint. Lee fouled out on the play.&nbsp;

Diarra made the first and missed the second. The Dragons rebounded the ball with no timeouts left.&nbsp;

A Kobe Campbell heave at the buzzer bounced hard off the backboard.&nbsp;

Overtime belonged to the Dragons as Yow continued his career night.&nbsp;

The Dragons opened up the extra frame on an 11-4 run.&nbsp;

The Dragons went up 44-33 headed into the final frame and held a 12-point advantage with 6:29 left after trailing by four in the third quarter.&nbsp;

Mya Williams led Hutchinson with 19 points. She broke the record for most points by a freshman in a single season with 558.

The game was decided at the free throw line after the Busters battled back within two points.

Kalyn Ervin calmly hit six straight free throws to ensure the victory.&nbsp;

For this second time this season, Hutchinson Community College freshman pitcher Riley Wertz was named the Jayhawk Conference’s Division I Pitcher of the Week.

Wertz, a freshman from Wichita, had a tremendous weekend out of the bullpen, picking up a pair of victories to move her season record to 3-0. For the week, Wertz threw 9 2-3 scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts and only one walk with two hits allowed.

Against Murray State, Wertz pitched the final 4 2-3 innings in Hutchinson’s 6-4, 10-inning victory over the Aggies. She came into the game with in the sixth with the score tied and two runners in scoring position, getting out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts. Wertz finished with 11 strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings.

Wertz threw four hitless shutout innings in a come-from-behind 6-5 win over North Central Texas. She had four strikeouts.

Wertz was also the league’s Pitcher of the Week in Week 1.

The Hutch High Boys held off Campus 55-49 at the SAC Tuesday.

Hutch was led by Nic Lange's 19 pts. He had 13 at the half. Garret Robertson had 17, including 6 straight free throws in the 4th&nbsp;quarter. 

Campus guard Aiden Sutter had 18, including 6 3's.&nbsp; Campus super sophomore Andrell Burton, Jr had 13 pts.

A Sutter 3 with 4:13 to go gave Campus a momentary lead 45-44 before Hutch High's Khalil Mendoza got a basket in the low block to give Hutch the lead 46-45 with 4:03 left.

The key call of the game came with 3:40 to go when Campus sophomore Kaason Thomas picked up his 4th&nbsp;foul and then was given a quick Technical for his 5th&nbsp;foul.&nbsp; Garrett Robertson hit all four free throws to give Hutch a 50-45 lead.&nbsp;

Campus' Sutter hit his 5th&nbsp;trey with 1:39 to play to make it 50-49 but Hutch scored the last 5 points to close it out.

Hutch travels to Derby on Friday.&nbsp; Campus will play Maize South on Friday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji scored 23 points and passed Wilt Chamberlain on Kansas' career scoring list, leading the No. 5 Jayhawks to a 102-83 win over Kansas State. Agbaji has 1,444 points in 110 games, 26th on Kansas' all-time list. He passed Chamberlain with his 13th point of the first half. Chamberlain had 1,433 points in 48 games. Markquis Nowell scored 20 points, Nijel Pack, Selton Miguel and Mike McGuirl each had 13, and Mark Smith added 11 for Kansas State.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Keegan Murray scored 28 points as No. 25 Iowa defeated Michigan State 86-60. Kris Murray, Keegan's twin brother, and Jordan Bohannon each had 11 as the Hawkeyes continued their February run. Iowa lost three of its last four games to end January, but is 5-1 since. Keegan Murray, who entered fourth nationally in scoring at 23.4 points per game, was 10 of 15 from the field. It was his 19th game of 20 or more points this season. It was the third consecutive win by Iowa over the struggling Spartans, who have dropped five of six overall.

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Pete Nance scored 20 points and Northwestern pulled away in the second half to beat Nebraska 77-65. Northwestern (13-13, 6-11 Big Ten) ended a three-game losing skid while Nebraska (7-20, 1-15) has lost three straight. Boo Buie and Chase Audige added 15 points apiece for Northwestern, which opened the second half on a 26-14 run for an 18-point lead with about 10 minutes left and stretched it to 68-47 with 7:27 remaining. Gonzaga remained at No. 1 for the second straight week, receiving all 61 votes from a media panel. Arizona moved up a spot to No. 2 for its highest ranking in four years, with Auburn, Purdue and Kansas rounding out the top five. Gonzaga is winning its WCC games by an average of 27 points. Saint Mary's gave the WCC two ranked teams and No. 25 Iowa moved into the poll for the first time this season.

UNDATED (AP) — LSU has moved into the top 10 of The Associated Press women's basketball poll for the first time in 13 years. Coach Kim Mulkey's Tigers climbed three places to No. 8. LSU has 23 victories, its most since the 2011-12 season. Mulkey won three national titles in 21 years as Baylor's coach and this is her first season with LSU. South Carolina remained the unanimous No. 1 team in the poll. The Gamecocks were followed by Stanford, North Carolina State, Louisville and Baylor. Michigan, Connecticut, Iowa State and Indiana round out the top 10. The Hoosiers fell five spots after losing twice.

Kevin Fiala, Jared Spurgeon and Jon Merrill scored for the Wild (31-14-3), who were playing the second of four games on a Canadian road trip. Cam Talbot made 30 saves. 'I've done this before': Martelli leads Michigan for Howard

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Phil Martelli is all set to guide Michigan for the rest of the college basketball regular season. The 67-year-old Martelli will fill in while Wolverines head coach Juwan Howard serves a five-game suspension. Howard was penalized after hitting a Wisconsin assistant coach in the head during a postgame handshake line Sunday. 

Martelli has spent nearly four decades as a coach in big-time college hoops, and led Saint Joseph's within one win of the Final Four in 2004. 

His first game will be Wednesday night when the Wolverines host Rutgers. Howard is expected to return for the Big Ten Tournament, which begins March 9 in Indianapolis.

Owners, players agree to meet for third day in a row Wednesday

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Another day ran off the clock in talks to salvage opening day when locked-out baseball players proposed what they considered a small move forward in drawn-out labor negotiations and management termed it a third straight step backward. 

Management again proposed a federal mediator enter the negotiations, but the union immediately turned down that idea, leaving Major League Baseball on track to lose regular-season games to a labor dispute for the first time since 1995. 

Less than a week remains until the sides reach what management says is a Monday deadline for a deal that would allow the season to start as scheduled on March 31. 

Still, the sides agreed to meet for a third day in a row Wednesday, the 84th day of the second-longest work stoppage in baseball history.

— One-time Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in a case arising from an altercation with his teenage daughter. Hamilton pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful restraint under a plea deal that dismisses a 2020 felony indictment for injury to a child. The judge fined Hamilton $500 and ordered him to pay court costs, do community service and attend parenting and anger management classes. His 14-year-old daughter told her mother, Hamilton's ex-wife, that her father struck her after he became enraged by a comment from her.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers says he's still making up his mind about whether he wants to return to the Green Bay Packers next season. Rodgers discussed his future Tuesday while talking on "The Pat McAfee Show". 

Rodgers said after the season that he would try to make a decision about his 2022 plans in relatively short order rather than dragging out the process. The reigning MVP said at the time that he hadn't ruled out any option, including returning to the Packers for an 18th season, retiring or requesting a trade.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Brendan Nugent has been hired as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive line coach. He replaces Frank Smith, who left the Chargers to become the Miami Dolphins' offensive coordinator. 

Nugent had spent the previous seven seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He coached the offensive line last season after being the assistant line coach the previous four years. Saints quarterbacks have been sacked a league-low 131 times since 2017. 

— Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores thinks race placed a factor in the team's decision to fire him in January. Speaking on the "I Am Athlete" podcast, Flores alleged he was given tasks that he doesn't think would have been required of a white head coach. Flores did not offer specifics on what tasks he was asked to do that he believes were based on race. Flores was hired recently as a senior defensive assistant by the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

American women players settle suit vs US Soccer for $24M

UNDATED (AP) — U.S. women soccer players have reached a landmark agreement with the sport's American governing body to end a six-year legal battle over equal pay. The deal promises them $24 million plus bonuses that match those of the men. The USSF also agrees to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at growing the sport for women.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Phil Mickelson is apologizing for comments he made about the Saudis and the financing of a rival league. Mickelson claims the comments golf writer Alan Shipnuck posted were off the record. Shipnuck wrote that was never the case. Mickelson says he regrets what he said and that his comments were reckless. Meanwhile, KPMG announced that the company and Mickelson have agreed to part ways. Their sponsorship has been around since 2008. 

Medvedev beats Paire, moves into second round in Acapulco

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Daniil Medvedev has beaten Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-4 to move into the second round at the Mexican Open. The 26-year-old Russian can move to No. 1 in the men's tennis rankings if he wins the title here. Medvedev, who won the 2021 U.S. Open and was a runner-up last month at the Australian Open, is playing in Mexico for the first time. He'll play either Alex Hernandez or Pablo Andujar in the next round.

Spanish figure skater Barquero fails Olympic drug test

BEIJING (AP) — Spanish figure skater Laura Barquero has become the fourth athlete to fail a doping test at the Beijing Olympics after testing positive for the banned steroid clostebol. 

Barquero and her partner Marco Zandron finished 11th in the pairs competition on Saturday. The International Testing Agency says her positive sample was given after the short program on Friday and the case will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. 

There were positive tests in Beijing for an Iranian athlete and two Ukrainians. Russian skater Kamila Valieva tested positive in a sample taken before the Olympics.

Wisconson hires Sheridan and alters roles for Bostad, Turner

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconson has hired Bill Sheridan to coach inside linebackers as one of three changes to Paul Chryst's staff. Chryst also announced Tuesday that Bob Bostad is switching from inside linebackers coach to offensive line coach and Mickey Turner is moving from tight ends coach to an off-field role in which he will lead Wisconson's recruiting efforts.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji scored 23 points and passed Wilt Chamberlain on Kansas’ career scoring list, leading the No. 5 Jayhawks to a 102-83 win over Kansas State. 

Agbaji has 1,444 points in 110 games, 26th on Kansas’ all-time list. He passed Chamberlain with his 13th point of the first half. Chamberlain had 1,433 points in 48 games. Markquis Nowell scored 20 points, Nijel Pack, Selton Miguel and Mike McGuirl each had 13, and Mark Smith added 11 for Kansas State.
