SALINA, Kan. — Kansas Wesleyan University will honor a unique father-son legacy this fall as Dave Dallas and his son, Drew Dallas, are inducted into the Jerry Jones Coyote Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend.

The Hall of Fame breakfast and induction ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, inside Muir Gymnasium on the KWU campus.

Dave Dallas, who served as KWU’s head football coach from 1997 to 2013, helped rebuild the program and led the Coyotes to KCAC championships in 2001 and 2002. He ranks second in program history with 94 wins and was named KCAC Coach of the Year in 2001. Known for his leadership and commitment to student-athletes, he coached six NAIA All-Americans and more than 300 All-KCAC honorees.

His son, Drew Dallas, followed in his footsteps, first as a quarterback for the Coyotes from 2006 to 2007, then as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Drew will be inducted for his post-graduate accomplishments, having led Hutchinson Community College to a 49-5 record over five seasons as head coach. His Blue Dragon teams have claimed four Jayhawk Conference titles and two NJCAA National Championships, cementing his status as one of the premier coaches in junior college football.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (May 22, 2025)&mdash;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/aaron-sabato-693306">Aaron Sabato</a>&nbsp;homered as the Wichita Wind Surge dropped a close 2-1 ballgame to the San Antonio Missions at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. While Wichita put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, it wasn&rsquo;t enough to tie the game and compete for a potential second straight win.
Francisco Acuna opened the bottom of the first with a home run over the left field wall. Besides that leadoff long ball, neither team would put any more tallies against the respective Wichita and San Antonio starters&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/ricky-castro-690462">Ricky Castro</a>&nbsp;and Henry Baez.
Sabato slugged a solo shot to right in the top of the seventh to tie the game 1-1. He is now two long balls away from the Wind Surge individual franchise record.

Nerwilian Cede&ntilde;o singled back up the middle to score Marcos Casta&ntilde;on in the bottom of the eighth to give the Missions a 2-1 lead. While Wichita put the tying run on second base, that runner would be stranded there after a game-ending strikeout in the top of the ninth.
<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/pierson-ohl-701487">Pierson Ohl</a>&nbsp;fell to 2-1 after receiving the loss. Over three innings, he gave up an earned run on three hits with a trio of strikeouts as the lone Wind Surge reliever used in the ballgame.

ARLINGTON, Texas &ndash;&nbsp;The winningest regular season in Kansas baseball history carried over into the postseason Thursday night in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals with the Jayhawks picking up their 26th come-from-behind victory of the year, topping Oklahoma State 7-6 in dramatic fashion at Globe Life Field.&nbsp; Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, the Jayhawks scored four runs &ndash; capped by a three-run home run from&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/brady-ballinger/16147" rel="smarttag" rev="16147">Brady Ballinger</a></dfn>&nbsp;&ndash; to tie the game. ⚾ No. 21 KU storms back to top OSU in Big 12 quarterfinals

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — All three area high school girls soccer teams were eliminated from postseason play Thursday evening in their respective regional championship games.

In Class 5A, Hutchinson High School saw its season come to an end with an 8-0 loss at Maize South. The Salthawks trailed 6-0 at halftime before allowing two second-half goals. Hutchinson finishes the 2025 season with an 11-7 record. Maize South (16-2) advances to Monday’s state quarterfinals.

In Class 4-1A, Buhler suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Mulvane in penalty kicks. The Crusaders fell behind 1-0 but tied the match in the 50th minute on a goal by Madi McCool. Mulvane (12-6) moves on to the quarterfinals, while Buhler ends its season at 12-6.

Also in Class 4-1A, McPherson fell at home to Topeka-Hayden, 2-1. The Bullpups struck first with an early goal, but Hayden equalized with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Wildcats netted the go-ahead goal with 26 minutes left in the match. McPherson had opportunities late but couldn’t convert.

The Salthawks trailed 6-0 at halftime before allowing two second-half goals. Hutchinson finishes the 2025 season with an 11-7 record. Maize South (16-2) advances to Monday’s state quarterfinals.In Class 4-1A, Buhler suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Mulvane in penalty kicks. The Crusaders fell behind 1-0 but tied the match in the 50th minute on a goal by Madi McCool. Mulvane (12-6) moves on to the quarterfinals, while Buhler ends its season at 12-6.Also in Class 4-1A, McPherson fell at home to Topeka-Hayden, 2-1. The Bullpups struck first with an early goal, but Hayden equalized with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Wildcats netted the go-ahead goal with 26 minutes left in the match. McPherson had opportunities late but couldn’t convert.

While there will no longer be a formal two-week tour, the clubs across the state and region will continue to provide support and outreach for the University. The department will work closely with each club moving forward to facilitate the financial support to the Ahearn Fund as well as the K-State Alumni Association's funding and awarding of local scholarships.&nbsp; "The history of our Catbacker Clubs and the support they provide is very unique to college athletics and a benefit that we do not take for granted," Athletics Director&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/staff-directory/gene-taylor/1" rel="smarttag" rev="1">Gene Taylor</a></dfn>&nbsp;said. "Talking internally and with our Catbacker Club leaders, we looked at factors such as the recruiting calendars, transfer portal dates, finals calendar for our student-athletes, and the recent overall attendance trends at some of our summer stops, and determined that adjustments are best as we move forward. But, I do want to be clear that the Catbacker Clubs are not going away, and their support and interaction with our coaches and student-athletes will remain. It will just be done more on a case-by-case basis with each club." The annual tour has been unlike any other across the country for decades as golf tournaments, social gatherings, dinner, live auctions and a program that features Wildcat coaches and athletics staff highlighted each stop. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the department announced some adjustments that included a shorter summer schedule for the events throughout the state. (AP) — The College Football Playoff will go to a more straightforward way of filling the bracket next season, placing teams strictly on where they are ranked instead of moving pieces around to reward conference champions.

Ten conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director came to the unanimous agreement they needed Thursday to shift the model that drew complaints last season.

The new format was widely expected after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-playoff-bracket-19ca5f1d2de4d1fb6b724880a2b4331e">last season’s jumbled bracket</a>&nbsp;gave byes to Big 12 champion Arizona State and Mountain West champion Boise State, even though those teams were ranked ninth and 12th by the playoff selection committee.

That system made the rankings and the seedings in the tournament two different things and resulted in some matchups — for instance, the quarterfinal between top-ranked Oregon and eventual national champion Ohio State — that came earlier than they otherwise might have.

“After evaluating the first year of the 12-team Playoff, the CFP Management Committee felt it was in the best interest of the game to make this adjustment,” said Rich Clark, executive director of the CFP.

The five highest-ranked champions will still be guaranteed spots in the playoff, meaning it’s possible there could be a repeat of last season, when CFP No. 16 Clemson was seeded 12th in the bracket after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey was among those who pushed for the change in the second year of the agreement, though he remained cautious about it being approved because of the unanimous vote needed.

Smaller conferences had a chance to use the seeding issue as leverage for the next set of negotiations, which will come after this season and could include an expansion to 14 teams and more guaranteed bids for certain leagues. The SEC and Big Ten will have the biggest say in those decisions.

As it stands, this will be the third different playoff system for college football in the span of three years. For the 10 years leading into last season’s inaugural 12-team playoff, the CFP was a four-team affair.

The news was first reported by ESPN, which last year signed a six-year, $7.8 billion deal to televise the expanded playoff.

🏈 CFP shifts to straight seeding model, no automatic byes for top league champs

Hutchinson Community College baseball sophomore first baseball&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/maher_quinn_nqj4">Quinn Maher</a>&nbsp;was named to the 2025 All-KJCCC Gold Glove team on Thursday.
Named All-Jayhawk West honorable mention last week, the sophomore from Colorado Springs, Colorado, is just the sixth Blue Dragon player in program history to post a 1.000 fielding percentage with more than 150 defensive chances.
Maher started 60 games at first base this season and did not commit an error in 418 total defensive chances. Maher's 418 defensive chances ranks seventh in Blue Dragon single-season history. His 412 putouts are four-most in Blue Dragon history, third most by a Hutchinson first baseman.
Maher helped the 2025 Blue Dragons lead the Jayhawk West in defense this season with a .972 team fielding percentage.
Over his two years with the Blue Dragons, Maher committed only three errors in 467 total defensive chances.
Maher's .994 career fielding percentage breaks the old career record of .993 set by Scott Wolverton in 2017 and 2018. Maher is only the sixth Blue Dragon with a career fielding percentage of .990 with 150 defensive chances or more.
Since the KJCCC started awarding Gold Glove awards to positions instead of one overall winner before the 2021 season, Maher is the second Blue Dragon to be named to the conference Gold Glove team. Ben Men McLaughlin (2022) is the other Blue Dragon to earn conference defensive honors.
The Blue Dragons finished 40-21 this season, placing third in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons swept the Allen Red Devils in two games in the Plains District opening-round series at Hobart-Detter Field. The Blue Dragons went 1-2 in the Plains District Tournament in Salina.
Offensively, Maher hit .299 for the season (58 for 194) with 14 doubles, eight home runs, 41 RBIs and 59 runs scored.

🏊‍♀️ Hutch Post-area athletes begin swim & dive championships

CLEARWATER, Fla. --&nbsp;South Florida's Matt Rose hit a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and lift the Bulls to a 4-3 win over Wichita State on Wednesday evening at BayCare Ballpark.

Wichita State's season ends with a 20-36 record. South Florida advances to take on the loser of East Carolina and Charlotte&nbsp;on Friday afternoon.

The game featured several key momentum swings. Wichita State was able to manufacture a run in the top of the first when&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/camden-johnson/9183">Camden Johnson</a>&nbsp;doubled, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jordan-rogers/9191">Jordan Rogers</a>&nbsp;sacrifice fly, giving WSU a 1-0 lead just three hitters into the game.

The lead stayed there thanks to four sharp innings from Wichita State starter&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/brady-hamilton/9179">Brady Hamilton</a>, who allowed just one baserunner that was erased on a double play. Hamilton ran into command trouble in the fifth, however, issuing three walks and hitting a batter that forced in the tying run and ended his outing after 4.2 innings, still without allowing a hit.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/nick-potter/9404">Nick Potter</a>&nbsp;escaped the bases-loaded jam and worked a scoreless sixth but allowed two runs in the top of the seventh to move South Florida (30-24) in front, 3-1. Jackson Mayo led off the inning with a double for South Florida's first hit of the game, then Lance Trippel laid down a sacrifice bunt that Potter threw away, scoring Mayo and sending Trippel to second. After another sacrifice bunt, Carter Murphy singled in Trippel to give the Bulls a two-run lead.

It did not last long, however, as Wichita State's dormant offense came to life against South Florida starter Jack Nedrow.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/lane-haworth/9180">Lane Haworth</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to crack a pinch-hit solo home run and one batter later&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/josh-livingston/9185">Josh Livingston</a>&nbsp;launched a solo blast of his own, knotting the score at 3-3.Rose untied the game leading off the bottom of the eighth, and the Shockers were retired 1-2-3 in the ninth by South Florida reliever Austin Newton (1-3) to end the game.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/aaron-arnold/9406">Aaron Arnold</a>&nbsp;(5-3) suffered the loss for Wichita State.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Salvador Perez had three hits including a two-run homer, Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia each had two hits and two RBIs, and the Kansas City Royals got their offense going in a 8-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

The Royals had scored three runs or fewer in their previous seven games and were held to four runs or fewer in 42 of their first 50 games.

Kansas City led 3-1 in the top of the fourth when Perez hit an opposite field homer off Giants starter Logan Webb (5-4) with Witt aboard.

The Royals extended the lead to 8-2 in the fifth, when Drew Waters hit a leadoff double during a two-run inning.

Matt Chapman, Patrick Bailey and Heliot Ramos homered for San Francisco.

Ramos hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Lucas Erceg to cut the lead to 8-4.

Jonathan Bowlan (1-0) gave up one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings in relief of opener Daniel Lynch IV, who walked three and gave up a hit in 1 2/3 innings.

Webb (5-4) gave up six runs (three earned) on 10 hits in four innings. The Giants’ ace struck out five and walked none.

Royals center fielder Kyle Isbel made a sliding catch on a low line drive off Wilmer Flores’ bat with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth inning of a 6-2 game.

The Royals improved to a major league-best 17-1 when scoring four runs or more.

Kansas City LHP Noah Cameron (1-1, 0.71 ERA) will pitch Friday’s series opener against the Twins in Minnesota. The Giants have not yet announced a starter for Friday’s series opener against the Nationals in Washington.

LAWRENCE, Kan. &mdash;&nbsp;Kansas great Jacque Vaughn, a former All-American, whose No. 11 jersey hangs in the rafters of Allen Fieldhouse, is returning to Lawrence as an assistant coach for his alma mater, coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/bill-self/727" rel="smarttag" rev="727">Bill Self</a></dfn>&nbsp;announced today. &nbsp; Vaughn, who served as an NBA head coach for five-plus seasons with the Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets, is the first-ever former NBA head coach to join the KU coaching staff. He brings more than 15 years of NBA coaching experience back to his alma mater and has coached NBA All-Stars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Jordan, Victor Oladipo and Ben Simmons and former Jayhawks Markieff Morris and Jalen Wilson. &nbsp; "We're very excited to welcome Jacque and (his wife) Laura into the fold," Self said. "I've known Jacque from a distance for several years now and have always admired how he has conducted himself professionally and how he has treated people. I think he will be an excellent addition to our program, while also serving as a great mentor, coach and representative of Kansas basketball. We lost an awesome coach in Norm (Roberts) when he retired but feel very fortunate to have replaced him with a tremendous Jayhawk that has a unique and impressive resume." &nbsp; Vaughn played four seasons at Kansas from 1993-94 until 1996-97, leaving his mark as one of the greatest point guards in program history. He concluded his career as KU's and the Big Eight Conference's all-time assists leader with 804 assists, which currently ranks third at KU. The Los Angeles, California native earned second-team All-American honors his senior year under coach Roy Williams. Vaughn was a two-time Academic All-American First Team selection in 1996 and 1997 and was the 1997 Academic All-American of the Year. Vaughn and Cole Aldrich (2010) are the only two players in program history to be named Academic All-American of the Year. &nbsp; Vaughn garnered two All-Big Eight honors and was the 1996 Big Eight Player of the Year. He also received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar-Athlete Award in 1996. &nbsp; On the KU career charts, Vaughn ranks third in assists (804), ninth in games started (125), 19th&nbsp;in steals (160), 23rd&nbsp;in three-point field goal percentage (38.3%) and 40th&nbsp;in points scored (1,207). Vaughn's KU jersey was officially retired on Dec. 21, 2002. He now returns to Lawrence to carry on the Jayhawk tradition as a member of the coaching staff. "I'm truly honored and overwhelmed with excitement to return to my alma mater and join Coach Self's staff as an assistant coach," Vaughn said. "The game of basketball has provided me the incredible privilege to mentor, coach, and compete alongside some of the best in the game. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to bring those experiences back to the school that means so much to me. It's a blessing to once again be part of the Jayhawk tradition." Following his brilliant collegiate career, Vaughn was drafted in the first round, No. 27 overall, by the Utah Jazz in the 1997 NBA Draft. He enjoyed a long playing career, spending 12 seasons in the NBA &ndash; four with Utah (1998-2001), two with Atlanta (2002, 2004), one with Orlando (2003), two with New Jersey (2005-06) and three with San Antonio (2007-09). He was a key reserve on the 2007 San Antonio Spurs team that won an NBA Championship. He played 20 minutes with eight points and six assists in the victory that sent his team to the NBA Finals, where they swept LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. &nbsp; Following his playing career, Vaughn was an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs from 2010 to 2012 and was named head coach for the Orlando Magic in July 2012. After his time as head coach of the Magic (216 games), he spent the 2015-16 season as a scout for the Spurs. Vaughn then became a top assistant for the Brooklyn Nets for the 2016-17 season and was named interim head coach in March 2020 and guided the franchise the NBA playoffs. He moved back to his assistant role that September under Coach Steve Nash. &nbsp; In November 2022, once again Vaughn was named interim head coach of the Nets and shortly thereafter had the interim title removed. He guided the Nets to playoffs for the second time in 2023 and while with the Nets, he coached several standouts, including Durant, Irving, Mikal Bridges, Cam Thomas and Jarrett Allen. &nbsp; Vaughn will now return home to KU to replace&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/norm-roberts/729" rel="smarttag" rev="729">Norm Roberts</a></dfn>, who retired earlier this month. 🏀 KU adds All-American Vaughn to coaching staff

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School fell to Eisenhower 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon in the Class 5A regional held at Adams Field at Westurban Baseball complex.&nbsp;

The loss ends the Salthawks' season at 15-12. The Tigers advance to the regional championship game, where they will face the winner of Bishop Carroll and Goddard.

Eisenhower broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing on a Hutchinson error before Isiah Lyons, Christian Guerra and Colton Doll each delivered RBI hits to make it 3-0. Lyons singled to center, Guerra doubled down the left field line, and Doll followed with a single in the same direction.

Cole Adams earned the win for Eisenhower, allowing one hit and two runs (one earned) over 6 2/3 innings. Adams was relieved with two outs in the top of the seventh after throwing the maximum number of pitches allowed. He struck out seven and walked three. 

Jack Davis took the loss for Hutchinson, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Caiden Beavers drove in one of Hutchinson’s two runs. Jack Yoder had the Salthawks’ only hit, going 1-for-3. The one hit recorded by the Salthawks ended a stretch of 15 1/3 innings without a hit going back to the second game of a doubleheader against Maize.&nbsp;

Eisenhower totaled nine hits, with Lyons and Doll each collecting two. Lyons, Guerra and Doll each recorded an RBI.

First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. If the Salthawks get the win, their next game will be at approximately 6pm. They would play the winner of #2 seed Wichita-Bishop Carroll and Goddard High.

The Salthawks enter the game with a 15-11 record and are the #10 seed.

⚾🥎 Hutch Post-area regional schedule for Wednesday

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hayden Birdsong threw five sharp innings in his first start of the season and the San Francisco Giants beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Birdsong (2-0) was moved from the bullpen to the rotation in place of Jordan Hicks and provided just what manager Bob Melvin hoped he would deliver when he made the move.

Birdsong allowed one unearned run, five hits and no walks to give the Giants their fourth win in the last five games.

Ryan Walker pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances.

Willy Adames hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning against Michael Lorenzen (3-5) and scored on a single by Casey Schmitt to give San Francisco a 2-1 lead.

Lorenzen allowed three runs — two earned — and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings in his shortest start of the season for Kansas City.

Kyle Isbel hit a sacrifice fly in the third and Bobby Witt Jr. had a run-scoring infield single in the eighth for the Royals, who have been held to four runs or fewer in 42 of 50 games.

The Giants added an insurance run in the fifth after Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino threw wildly to second when he tried to get a force on a grounder by Wilmer Flores. Jung Hoo Lee followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1.

 </figure>SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hayden Birdsong threw five sharp innings in his first start of the season and the San Francisco Giants beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Tuesday night.Birdsong (2-0) was moved from the bullpen to the rotation in place of Jordan Hicks and provided just what manager Bob Melvin hoped he would deliver when he made the move.Birdsong allowed one unearned run, five hits and no walks to give the Giants their fourth win in the last five games.Ryan Walker pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances.Willy Adames hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning against Michael Lorenzen (3-5) and scored on a single by Casey Schmitt to give San Francisco a 2-1 lead.Lorenzen allowed three runs — two earned — and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings in his shortest start of the season for Kansas City.Kyle Isbel hit a sacrifice fly in the third and Bobby Witt Jr. had a run-scoring infield single in the eighth for the Royals, who have been held to four runs or fewer in 42 of 50 games.<h2>Key moment</h2>The Giants added an insurance run in the fifth after Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino threw wildly to second when he tried to get a force on a grounder by Wilmer Flores. INMAN, Kan. — A six-run second inning powered the Inman Teutons to an 8-1 victory over Bennington on Tuesday, securing a spot in the Class 2-1A state softball tournament.

Inman advances to the state tournament, which will be held May 29-30 at the Green Sports Complex in Pratt. They enter the state tournament with a 22-1 record.

The Teutons outscored their three opponents in regional play, 36-3.

Ellie Thimmesch led the Teutons at the plate, going 3-for-3 with singles in the second, fifth and seventh innings. Inman racked up 14 hits overall, with Maddi Parsons also collecting three and both Taylor Froese and Adi Alcala recording multiple hits.

In the decisive second inning, Marlee Ballard drove in a run with a single, Allison Schrag cleared the bases with a three-run double, Alexis Noone added a sacrifice fly, and Sharley Leonhardt executed a sacrifice bunt to bring home another run.

Parsons added an RBI single in the third inning, while Noone and Schrag finished with two RBIs each.

Lyla Levin earned the win in the circle for Inman, allowing six hits and one run over seven innings. She struck out seven and walked none.

Bennington was led by Brooklyn Clark and Gracie Caswell, who each collected two hits. Clark drove in the Bulldogs' lone run. Haylee Blake took the loss, allowing eight runs on 14 hits over seven innings.

Inman defeated Ell-Saline (15-0) in the regional opener on Monday, before beating Salina-Sacred Heart, 13-2 in the regional semifinal.
