
WICHITA, Kan. – Behind a suffocating defensive effort, Wichita State cruised to a 72-42 win over Southern Friday night in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (9-2) remained undefeated at home this season and has won six straight home games dating back to last season. The 42 points and 26 percent shooting were both season lows for an opponent.
Jane Asinde led four Shockers in double figures with a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. It marked her fourth double-double of the season. Curtessia Dean added 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, while going 7-for-8 at the free throw line.
Shamaryah Duncan and Trajata Colbert rounded out the top scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Shockers set season highs in field goal percentage (55 percent), free throws made (22) and attempted (32) and outrebounded the Jaguars by 18.
After making just four field goals in the first half, Southern finished the game 15-for-57 and went 8-for-12 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Wichita State's defense was flying around the first 10 minutes. The Shockers held Southern to just four points in the opening quarter on 2-of-17 shooting. Southern went scoreless the final 5:14, allowing the Shockers to build their lead behind a 13-0 run.
The Shockers' run reached as many as 20-0 in the opening minutes of the second quarter before a Southern layup snapped the drought.
With 2:00 minutes left in the first half, Asinde was outscoring Southern by herself, 10-9. Wichita State cruised into the half leading, 38-9. The nine first half points were the fewest allowed in the Keitha Adams era.
Wichita State outscored Southern 21-5 in the second quarter and shot 54 percent from the field. Defensively, Wichita State limited Southern to 4-of-30 from the field and 0-for-14 from three-point range.
Asinde led all scorers with 10 points to go with eight first half rebounds.
Southern was able to play an even third quarter, but Wichita State still led by 29 after 30 minutes.
Wichita State led by as many as 36 in the second half and never trailed on the night.
