Wyatt Thompson, Voice of the Kansas State Wildcats

Wyatt has been in the broadcasting industry for over 40 years. Wyatt’s first opportunity to do play-by-play was on the student station at Colby Community College. Wyatt’s plan upon completing community college was to attend K-State. In 1976, he was working part-time for Kay Melia’s radio and television stations in Goodland, Kansas. Later, he was offered a full-time position at the Goodland stations. During this time, Wyatt learned production, news, sports, for both radio and television. Wyatt describes those years as the “best 3 years of my professional life from the standpoint of learning the business." During the next 10 years Wyatt made radio stops in Goodland, Abilene, Great Bend, and Arkansas City. Those years provided him the opportunity to hone his broadcast skills while doing play-by-play for community colleges and high schools. From 1985 until 1989 Thompson worked for KAYS radio and television in Hays, Kansas. He was the play-by-play voice for Ft. Hays State. In 1989, Thompsons career took him to Fort Collins, Colorado, where he had his first Division 1 opportunity covering The Colorado State Rams. He initially started as the color analyst and eventually did play-by-play for five seasons. The Colorado Broadcasters Association recognized Wyatt for the best-play-by-play in 2000. Wyatt had also been a sports reporter in Denver on Clear Channels KOA.&nbsp;He hosted Countdown to Kickoff for the Denver Broncos as well as the “Zone Sports Insiders” show on KOA. In 2002, K-State announced Wyatt Thompson would be the new voice for K-State Athletics. In addition to play-by-play responsibilities for football, basketball, and selected K-State baseball games, he is the host for football and basketball coaches show on the K-State Radio Network. Additionally, Wyatt hosts weekly television shows for football and basketball throughout the state. Wyatt dedicates lots of time to his K-State community by appearing for gatherings, mentoring, appearances, and interviews. Wyatt enters his 21st year with his on-air partner Stan Weber for the 2022-23 sports season. Wyatt has received numerous broadcast awards during his career, including the KAB’s best play-by-play in 1982, the Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year in 1989 and the Hod Humiston Award for Sports Broadcasting in 2011. Since arriving at K-State, he has been recognized as the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year award six times. Wyatt is a role model for aspiring young broadcasters and has participated in numerous KAB events from the annual KAB convention as a panelist to KAB sponsored seminars. He is admired and respected by his colleagues within the broadcast industry and coaches throughout the country.

Don Free, Retired Engineer for the Kansas City Royals

Don Free is a Topeka resident and has spent over 50 years in broadcasting. He joined the Air Force in 1964 and in 1967 while stationed at Forbes Air Base in Topeka, started working part time at WIBW-TV.&nbsp; Following his discharge from the Air Force, he went full-time as their cameraman and directing news. Four years later, Don moved into engineering, which was his ambition leaving high school. He began helping on TV remotes to broadcast an array of sporting events, including the Kansas City Royals. In 1985, Don had the opportunity to engineer 15 radio games for the Royals Radio Network, the year they won the World Series. The next season, he was hired full time with the Royals and started his 32-year-long dream job.&nbsp;Don retired from the Royals following the 2017 season. Without Don’s expertise, patience, and engineering ingenuity, those memorable play-by-play calls from Denny, Fred, Ryan, Bob and Steve would never have been heard. During his remarkable career, Don and his family lived in Topeka, meaning he drove to the Royals' stadium 81 times a year and to his other "office" at a ballpark somewhere around the country 81 more times. Despite being retired, Don continues to engineer some radio games for visiting teams at Kauffman Stadium and works with the Kansas State Football Radio Network as an engineer.&nbsp; Don was inducted into the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018 and received the Bob Fidler Award designated for a media member who helped promote the sport. He’s been married to Sandy 42 years, and they have two daughters and four grandchildren.&nbsp;

Jack Oliver, KEYN Program Director and Show Host

Since 1969, Jack has worked at numerous Wichita radio stations including KLEO (1969) (only a few overnights), then on to KGNO in Dodge City and then Back to Wichita at KAKE (1973-1979), and KKRD (1980-2004). Since 2004, Jack has been program director at KEYN (Audacy, Inc.). Previously, he was heard daily from 12-7 p.m. However, following the death of Don Hall in April of 2020, Jack moved from afternoons to host the KEYN morning show. Jack advises young radio broadcasters to “find a city that likes you and stay for a while.”&nbsp;&nbsp; Early in his broadcast career, Jack received a first-class radio telephone operator’s license through the FCC. In addition to this, he developed extraordinary skills as a top radio programmer, on-air talent, and production voice. Jack never worked with wax cylinders, but he has certainly watched the broadcasting industry grow from its days of analog mono, tape and vinyl to its evolution into stereo and digital, and at age 72, he has adapted well and today still enjoys practicing his craft.&nbsp; Jack is from Wynnewood, Oklahoma. He’s a 1968 graduate of South High School in Wichita and earned a master’s degree in Business Communications from Wichita State University. Jack is very active in Wichita’s Native American Community and served on the board of directors of the All-American Indian Center for ten years. From 1994- 1996, he was a board member of the Wichita Zoning Commission and from 1996-1998 was a board member of the Wichita Traffic Commission. Jack has also helped to raise millions of dollars for local charities. In addition, Jack has been a sought-after speaker on numerous panels at radio-TV conventions such as the NAB, Radio &amp;; Records, The Gavin Report, and The Conclave. He also received a prestigious nomination for&nbsp;air talent and program director of the year from Billboard Magazine, Radio &amp; Records and Hitmakers Magazine.

The Royals broke loose in the seventh against the Arizona bullpen. Kansas City finished with seven hits, snapping an eight-game streak of six hits or less. Christian Walker hit his career-high 30th homer for Arizona, which has dropped four of five.

CHICAGO (AP) — Zach McKinstry homered and drove in three runs, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1. Nico Hoerner had three hits for Chicago, and Yan Gomes added two RBIs. Rowan Wick got five outs for the win, leading a solid performance by the Cubs bullpen. Lars Nootbaar homered for NL Central-leading St. Louis, and Corey Dickerson went 4 for 4. The Cardinals dropped to 17-5 in August. Chicago and St. Louis split the first four games of their unusual five-game set. The series finale is Thursday afternoon.

DENVER (AP) — Martín Pérez threw six scoreless innings and Nathaniel Lowe homered and drove in five runs, helping the Texas Rangers pound José Ureña and the Colorado Rockies 16-4 on Wednesday. Mark Mathias had a bases-clearing double, Adolis García extended his hitting streak to 21 games with an RBI single and Lowe had a run-scoring single in a seven-run second inning. Texas posted its highest-scoring game since 2019 in winning for the fourth time in five games and improving to 6-4 under interim manager Tony Beasley.

NEW YORK (AP) — Every Major League Baseball team will play each other in the same season for the first time next year as the sport switches to its first balanced schedule since 2000. As a result of the format switch agreed to in the March lockout settlement, high-profile games between division rivals such as Yankees-Red Sox, Dodgers-Giants and Cubs-Cardinals will be reduced from 19 and intradivision games will drop from 47% to 32%. A team will host all of the other 29 clubs at least once every two seasons. The season opens March 30 with all teams scheduled.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson, who helped the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title, died Wednesday. The MVP of the Chiefs’ victory over the Vikings in January 1970 had been in declining health for years. He entered hospice care on Aug. 12. “Lenny the Cool” went into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1987. He also was inducted as a broadcaster in 2012. Dawson spent several decades working on local TV and radio broadcasts while also doing color analysis for NBC and hosting HBO's iconic "Inside the NFL.” The Chiefs intend to honor him during their preseason finale against Green Bay on Thursday night. Len Dawson was 87.

UNDATED (AP) — Twenty-five years since Hal Mumme unleashed the groundbreaking Air Raid offense on the Southeastern Conference it has become pervasive throughout football. But outside of Mike Leach, Mumme's protege and Air Raid Godfather, most coaches are running an evolved form of the offense, with more running plays, more varied formations and an assortment of motions and misdirection. Air Raid principles and concepts can be found in just about every modern passing game from NFL to high school. But at the highest levels of the sport, it's hard to find anyone actually running the Air Raid.

ATLANTA (AP) — The PGA Tour is making its boldest response yet to the rival Saudi-funded league. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has announced a plan for the best players to commit to a 20-tournament schedule starting next year. That means they will be competing against one another up to 17 times and maybe more. That involves elevating four additional tournaments that will offer $20 million or more to go along with the tournaments already announced. Monahan says top players will be determined by a new Player Impact Program criteria. The PIP will double in money to $100 million.

ATLANTA (AP) — The FedEx Cup and it's up for grabs. Well, sort of. Scottie Scheffler is the No. 1 seed and starts with a two-shot advantage. The Masters champ can't remember the last time someone had to give him strokes. In this case, that someone is Patrick Cantlay. Such is the nature of the FedEx Cup finale at the Tour Championship. The guys at the bottom start 10 shots behind. The good news for Scheffler is the last two No. 1 seeds have won the FedEx Cup. And no one more than five back at the start has gone on to win.

ATLANTA (AP) — Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are bringing their own version of team golf to the PGA Tour. Woods and McIlroy are part of a new media group called TMRW (pronounced “tomorrow”) Sports. Former Golf Channel president Mike McCarley is the CEO. The first project is called TGL. It's a tech-infused golf league that will feature six teams of three players for matches on Monday night. The broadcast partner hasn't been announced. It will be played in a custom-built arena. The long shots will be using a simulator. The short shots will be live. The 18-hole matches take two hours.

Sports Headlines for Thursday

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—In conjunction with Major League Baseball, the Kansas City Royals today announced their 2023 regular season schedule. All games times will be announced at a later date.

Opening Day is scheduled for Thursday, March 30 at Kauffman Stadium vs. the Minnesota Twins. This will mark the seventh time in nine years dating back to 2015 that the Royals will open the season at home. The 2023 season will mark the fifth time in 55 years that the Royals will begin a season vs. the Twins, and the first time since 2017, when they opened the season at Minnesota.

The Royals will also end the regular season at home with a three-game series vs. the New York Yankees from Sept. 29-Oct. 1, marking the seventh time in eight seasons since 2016 that the Royals will end the year at Kauffman Stadium. 

For the first time since Interleague play was introduced in 1997, Major League Baseball has adopted a balanced schedule starting in 2023, in which the Royals will play all other 29 teams. Kansas City’s 162-game schedule will include:

52 games vs. American League Central teams (13 games across 4 series vs. all 4 opponents)

64 league games vs. American League East and West teams (6-7 games vs. each opponent)

46 Interleague games (4 games vs. St. Louis and 3 games vs. all other NL teams)

The breakdown of divisional games will include seven home games and six road games vs. Chicago and Detroit, and six home games and seven road games vs. Cleveland and Minnesota.

Of the 10 teams who play in the American League East and American League West, the Royals will play four of those opponents seven times and will play six of those teams six times.

The Royals will play their intra-state rival St. Louis Cardinals in two games at Busch Stadium from May 29-30 and will host the Cardinals at Kauffman Stadium for two games from Aug. 11-12. The Royals will play exactly three games vs. each of the other 14 National League teams, including seven three-game home series and seven three-game road series.

The seven Interleague matchups (excluding St. Louis) to be hosted at Kauffman Stadium will include three games vs. Atlanta (April 14-16), Washington (May 26-28), Colorado (June 2-4), Cincinnati (June 12-14), Los Angeles (June 30-July 2), New York (Aug. 1-3) and Pittsburgh (Aug. 28-30).

In addition to St. Louis, the Royals will travel to seven National League ballparks, including at San Francisco (April 7-9), Arizona (April 24-26), Milwaukee (May 12-14), San Diego (May 15-17), Miami (June 5-7), Philadelphia (Aug. 4-6) and Chicago (Aug. 18-20).

Following their two-game set at Busch Stadium from May 29-30, the Royals are scheduled for back-to-back off days on May 31-June 1, before beginning a three-game homestand vs. Colorado. This will mark the first time that the Royals will have scheduled back-to-back off days since April 6-7, 2016.

After a two-game series at Kauffman Stadium vs. the Cardinals from Aug. 11-12, the Royals will enjoy a scheduled off day on Sunday, Aug. 13. This will mark the first known originally scheduled off day on a Sunday in Royals history.

Kansas City’s holiday schedule will see the Royals host the Angels on Father’s Day (June 18). The Royals will travel to San Francisco for Easter Sunday (April 9), to Milwaukee for Mother’s Day (May 14), to St. Louis for Memorial Day (May 29) and to Minnesota for Independence Day (July 4). The Royals are scheduled off on Labor Day (Sept. 4).

The Royals will be in Kansas City on Jackie Robinson Day, which is Saturday, April 15, to host the Braves. The Royals will host Colorado on Friday, June 2 as the league celebrates its third annual Lou Gehrig Day, and they will play host to Houston on Friday, Sept. 15, which is Roberto Clemente Day.

The All-Star break will run from July 10-13 and will include the 93rd Major League Baseball All-Star Game to be played on Tuesday, July 11 at T-Mobile Park, home of the Seattle Mariners.

DODGE CITY – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team earns its sixth-straight victory and opened the 2022 Jayhawk West season with a sweep of Dodge City on Wednesday at the Student Activities Center.

The Blue Dragons used a balanced attack and took advantage of several Dodge City attack and service errors to sweep the Conquistadors 25-21, 25-20, 25-23.

Hutchinson improves to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons complete an ultra-busy opening eight days of the regular season with four matches on Friday and Saturday at the TSJC Classic in Trinidad, Colorado.

Freshmen Alejandra Briseno posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs to lead the Blue Dragons. Briseno had six kills in a tightly played third set.

Freshman Taniya Golden finished with eight kills with a solo block and block assist. She had four kills in each of the first two sets.

Sophomore Baylee Miller finished with seven kills and two block assists. Sophomore Blondie Penaflor finished with five kills and freshman Anna Dean added four kills and two total blocks.

Dodge City had four more kills than Hutchinson, 43-39. But the Conquistadors had 22 attack errors and 10 service errors.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano finished with 19 assists, one kill and one service ace. Freshman Giovanna Ravanhani had 13 assists and a kill.

Freshman libero Perrine Blanc had a team-high 15 digs. Sophomore Morgan Harvey had 10 digs.

The Blue Dragons took a 10-6 lead in the opening set after Briseno and sophomore Sophie Connor teamed up for a block and a 10-6 lead. A Briseno ace and Dodge attack error gave the Dragons a 13-7 lead and a Miller kill made it 15-9 Blue Dragons. The Conquistadors won 10 of the next 16 rallies and pulled within 21-19 and later 23-21. Serrano’s setter dump stopped the Dodge City advance and closed the set with a wild play. A Briseno dig was immediately set back over the net by Golden and the ball dropped for a kill. Dodge City had eight attack errors and six service errors in the set.

Three-straight Golden kills helped Hutchinson jump out to a 5-1 lead in the second set. Then leading 12-8, the Dragons reeled off four straight to build a 16-8 lead. A 5-1 Dodge City run was snapped by a Dean kill. After the Conqs pulled within three points twice late in the set, Hutchinson closed out the set with a Golden kill and Dean/Golden double block for a 25-20 victory and a 2-0 match lead.

Hutchinson led the third set 6-3, but Dodge City rallied for leads of 7-6 and 12-10 after back-to-back blocks. The Conquistadors still led 17-14. The Dragons answered with a five-point run and took a 19-17 lead after a Briseno kill. After Dodge City pulled within two, Ravanhani scored on a setter dump for a 23-19 lead. Dodge City scored the next three points to pull within 23-22. The Dragons closed out the set with kills from Briseno and Penaflor.

Cody Laweryson got the nod on the hill for the Surge and made his fourth start on the mound where he pitched four and two thirds scoreless innings, allowing zero runs, two hits, two walks, and recorded five strikeouts.

KANSAS CITY — Len Dawson, the 87-year-old Hall of Fame quarterback who led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title, died Wednesday.

The MVP of the Chiefs’ 23-7 Super Bowl victory over Minnesota in January 1970, Dawson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987 and received the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award in 2012.

From Alliance, Ohio, Dawson starred at Purdue and was selected fifth overall by Pittsburgh in the 1957 NFL draft. After seeing limited time in the NFL in three seasons with the Steelers and two with Cleveland, he joined the Dallas Texans in the American Football League in 1962, reuniting with former Purdue assistant coach Hank Stram.

Dawson moved with the team to Kansas City the following season and remained the Chiefs' starting quarterback until retiring in 1975.

In addition to his work at KMBC where he was the station's first sports anchor, Dawson was a game analyst for NBC and the Chiefs' radio network and hosted HBO's “Inside the NFL” show.

⚾ Surge lose in Frisco Tuesday

After a tremendous opening weekend in which she led the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to wins over the Nos. 3 and 1 teams in the nation, Blue Dragon sophomore Baylee Miller was named the Jayhawk Conference’s first Division I Volleyball Player of the Week of the season on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons’ sophomore outside/right-side hitter from Wichita, Miller twice posted career highs for kills and helped the Blue Dragons upset No. 3 Missouri State University-West Plains and No. 1 Iowa Western both on Saturday at the Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

For the week in four matches and 17 sets, Miller hit .370 and had 3.35 kills per set.

Miller had a career-high of 14 kills and 14 digs in a five-set loss to No. 19 Indian Hills on Friday. Then on Saturday, Miller had career bests of 24 kills and .537 hitting percentage in leading the Blue Dragons to a victory over No. 3 West Plains.

A few hours later, Miller had 16 kills on .281 hitting in helping the Dragons earn a victory over an NJCAA Division I No. 1-ranked program for the first time in program history with a five-set win over top-ranked and defending national champion Iowa Western.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Christian Walker had three hits, including a run-scoring double, to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Walker’s two-out double highlighted a three-run eighth against Josh Staumont (3-3) to extend the Diamondbacks’ lead to 5-1.

“That’s what every team’s playing for to some extent, that hit with traffic on,” Walker said. “Everybody wants to come through and get that timely hit.”

Walker delivered after Manager Torey Lovullo turned him loose on a 3-0 count.

“He earned that right to get that 3-0 swing,” Lovullo said. “I just thought it was a crucial time in the game and right guy and the right situation.”

Arizona starter Zach Davies didn’t allow a baserunner until Bobby Witt Jr., hammered his 17th homer to left field with one out in the fourth.

“My command was a little bit off,” Davies said. “I got behind guys but was able to get back into counts and was able to get contact right at guys and use my defense a lot tonight. When I needed to be able to make a pitch I could.”

Lovullo said Davies was "just pounding the zone, front to back changing speeds with his changeup/fastball combination.”

Nicky Lopez and Witt tripled during a two-run eighth to cut Arizona’s lead to 5-3.

Royals starter Jonathan Heasley pitched out of trouble in each of the first four innings, allowing a hit and a walk in each frame. Heasley escaped damage when the Diamondbacks went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Heasley’s most uncomfortable moment came in the fourth as he paused twice to vomit behind the mound. He eventually had to leave the game when the problem recurred with two out in the fifth.

“It’s not a ‘sick’ issue,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He gets amped up and that’s something that’s happened to him multiple times throughout his life. He was completely unsurprised because it’s happened so often. It got to the point where I had to get him out. At some point we had to draw a line.”

Heasley's attempt to pitch through the problem impressed Lovullo.

“It certainly spoke volumes about his toughness,” Lovullo said. “You get one out away from potentially winning a baseball game and you’ve got to come out, it’s not very satisfying, but he threw the ball well.”

Arizona tied the game in the sixth on Geraldo Perdomo’s two-out hit off reliever José Cuas’ leg.

Jake McCarthy delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the seventh, giving the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead.

Arizona scored all seven runs against three Kansas City relievers.

“We were patient,” Lovullo said. “We executed. The first several innings we were just giving away at-bats. We weren’t locked in the way we were later in the game.”

Alek Thomas had three hits and a walk as Arizona snapped a three-game losing streak.

Ewers transferred to Texas after sitting most of last season deep on the depth chart at Ohio State. He beat Hudson Card for the starting job with the Longhorns. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Baker Mayfield will start the Carolina Panthers’ Sept. 11 regular-season opener against his former team, the Cleveland Browns. Panthers coach Matt Rhule made the announcement on the team’s website Monday. Mayfield, acquired in a trade with the Browns earlier this offseason, beat out incumbent starter Sam Darnold for the job. Both quarterbacks are expected to play Friday night in the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Gary Gaines, coach of the Texas high school football team made famous in the book and movie “Friday Night Lights,” has died. He was 73. Gaines’ family says the former coach died in Lubbock after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Gaines made many stops in West Texas during a 30-year coaching career. He was best known for a four-year stint leading the highly successful program at Odessa Permian. His 1988 team was chronicled in Buzz Bissinger’s bestselling book. It portrayed a program that favored football over academics but had a sympathetic view of Gaines.

Just a little more than 48 hours after completing a day of back-to-back victories over the Nos. 3 and 1 teams in the nation on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team opened the home season with three wins at the Blue Dragon Quad on Monday night.

The Blue Dragons improved their record to 5-2 with a pair of sweeps and a four-set victory at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson opened on Monday with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-15 victory over the Ottawa University JV. The Blue Dragons then dominated sets 2 and 3 against Neosho County in a 25-22, 25-10, 25-17 victory over the Panthers. The Dragons dropped the second set to the Bethel College JV, but notched a fifth-straight win with a 25-12, 22-25, 25-12, 25-9 victory over the Threshers.

The Blue Dragons open Jayhawk West play on Wednesday at Dodge City and then travel to the TJC Classic on Friday and Saturday in Trinidad, Colorado.

The Blue Dragons used a balanced offensive attack and another strong effort from the service line to sweep the Braves, which went 1-2 in the Blue Dragon Quad.

Freshman Alejandra Briseno led Hutchinson with 10 kills and a service ace. She had four kills in each of the first two sets.

Freshman Taniya Golden finished with seven kills. Freshman Perline Fery came off the bench in the third set to notch all five of her kills.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Ottawa 38-28 and had four total blocks and 11 service aces.

Six different Hutchinson players recorded at least one ace led by Perrine Blanc with three aces. Morgan Harvey, Andrea Serrano and Cydney Carter had two aces each.

Serrano finished with 23 assists and freshman Giovanna Ravanhanni had 13 assists.

Blanc led the Dragons with 10 digs and Serrano added eight digs.

The Blue Dragons led the opening set 9-6 when an Anna Dean kill ignited a 13-1 run, which was capped by a Harvey back-row kill for a 22-8 lead.

The second set was tight throughout. The Braves pulled within two points twice at 20-18 and 23-21. The Dragons closed out the set with a Chloe Conway kill and a Conway/Harvey double block on set point.

Leading the third set 10-8, the Dragons used a 5-1 run that was capped by a Blondie Penaflor kill and solo block to build a 15-9 lead. From that point the Dragons continued to pull away, reaching match point with back-to-back Carter service aces for a 24-15 lead. Penaflor and Serrano posted a double block on match point.

The Blue Dragons’ freshman duo of Briseno and Golden combined for 27 kills to lead the Blue Dragons to a sweep of Jayhawk East foe Neosho County in the second match on Monday night.

Briseno had season highs with 15 kills, three total blocks and three service aces. Briseno had six kills in the first set, five in the second and four more in the third set.

Golden pounded down 12 kills to help Hutchinson out-hit Neosho County 49-24. The Blue Dragons also had 8.5 team blocks and eight service aces.

Dean finished with four kills and four total blocks. Miller added four kills.

Serrano finished with 24 assists and three service aces. Ravanhanni had 15 assists. Blanc led the Dragons with eight digs.

Briseno and Golden combined for 10 of the Dragons’ 16 kills in the first set. Briseno had back-to-back aces to erase a two-point deficit and give the Dragons an early 4-3 lead. Hutchinson didn’t relinquish the lead from that point, but the Panthers kept it close. Leading 14-12, Hutch went on a small 4-1 run to create some cushion. A Briseno kill gave the Dragons a 20-15 lead. The Panthers pulled with 21-19, but the Dragons and Panthers sided out on the final seven points of the set.

Leading the second set 8-4, the Blue Dragons exploded for a 13-3 run that was capped by consecutive Briseno kills for a 21-7 lead. Two more Briseno kills and a Golden kill on the final three rallies of the set gave the Dragons their largest set win of the early season.

With the third set tied at 11, a Briseno/Conway double block started a decisive 6-0 Dragon run. The Dragons took advantage of eight Neosho County attack errors in the set to close the match in a sweep.

The Blue Dragons had a season-high 14 service aces, but had to overcome 24 attack errors and eight service errors in a four-set win over the Bethel JV.
