TOPEKA —&nbsp;The state championship dominance of schools like Bishop Miege is now an issue for the Kansas Legislature.

The Kansas State Board of Education passed the multiplier proposal on to legislators by a 6-4 vote Wednesday morning. Board members Porter, Waugh, Mah, Jones, Haas and Clifford voted for the proposal. Members Arnold, Dombrosky, Horst and McNiece voted against it.

The classifications from 4A and down voted in favor of a proposed change that would introduce a multiplier for successful private schools that would inflate their enrollment number for classification purposes, 5A and 6A did not vote in favor.

Kansas High Schools voted 216 to 139 to make the change.

The identifying statutes need to be approved by the Legislature prior to implementation.

UNDATED (AP) — Preseason rest appeared to lead to a little bit of rust in Week 1 for several of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. Whether the poor results were a result of rust or other factors isn’t clear but the poor results are. Hutchinson Community College sophomore linebacker R.J. Evans was tapped on Tuesday as the Jayhawk Conference’s Football Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2022 season.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker from Hanceville, Alabama, was the leading tackler for the No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons in their 31-29 overtime victory over No. 7 Iowa Central on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

Evans had nine total tackles with three solo stops, and made several key plays the victory where the Blue Dragon defense made a huge defensive stop on fourth –and-1 in overtime to set up the Dragons’ eventual game-winning field goal by Cole Segraves.

Evans had 1.5 quarterback sacks as well as another quarterback hurry and a deflected pass to help the Dragons make several key stops in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Evans is the fourth Blue Dragon to be recognized by the KJCCC this season. Quarterback Dylan Laible was the league’s Offensive Player of the Week in Week 1. Running back Rontavious Richmond as the Week 2 Offensive Player of the Week and Darby Roper was the Week 2 Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Blue Dragons have a bye on Saturday before opening conference play against Coffeyville on Sept. 24 in Coffeyville.

Evans was tapped on Tuesday as the Jayhawk Conference’s Football Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2022 season.The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker from Hanceville, Alabama, was the leading tackler for the No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons in their 31-29 overtime victory over No. 7 Iowa Central on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.Evans had nine total tackles with three solo stops, and made several key plays the victory where the Blue Dragon defense made a huge defensive stop on fourth –and-1 in overtime to set up the Dragons’ eventual game-winning field goal by Cole Segraves.Evans had 1.5 quarterback sacks as well as another quarterback hurry and a deflected pass to help the Dragons make several key stops in the fourth quarter and overtime.Evans is the fourth Blue Dragon to be recognized by the KJCCC this season. Quarterback Dylan Laible was the league’s Offensive Player of the Week in Week 1. Running back Rontavious Richmond as the Week 2 Offensive Player of the Week and Darby Roper was the Week 2 Special Teams Player of the Week.The Blue Dragons have a bye on Saturday before opening conference play against Coffeyville on Sept. 24 in Coffeyville.

Blue Dragon sophomore defensive specialist/libero Morgan Harvey was named the Jayhawk Conference Volleyball Division I Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

The versatile sophomore from Hoyt, Kansas, reached double figures in digs three times and had a serve receive percentage of .931 in a 3-2 week for No. 17 Hutchinson.

Harvey averaged 3.12 digs per set in 17 sets with a weekly high of 15 in a four-set victory over No. 19 Northeastern Junior College on Saturday in Sterling, Colorado. Harvey also had 10 digs against No. 4 Indian Hills and 13 digs against No. 5 Western Nebraska.

Harvey is eighth in the Jayhawk West in digs per set at 2.33.

Harvey is the fourth Blue Dragon to earn KJCCC weekly honors. She joins Baylee Miller, who was Offensive Player of the Week in Week 1. Anna Dean was the Offensive Player of the Week and Andrea Serrano was the Setter of the Week in Week 2.

The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team concludes a two-game homestand on Wednesday when the Dodge City Conquistadors come in for a Jayhawk West matchup.

Now ranked No. 20 in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Rankings, the Blue Dragons enter play on Wednesday with a 6-0 overall record and are tied for first place in the Jayhawk West at 3-0 (9 points). Dodge City comes into the game at 1-2-1 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk West.

The game will be broadcast live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning around 5:50 p.m.

Hutchinson won its sixth straight to open the season on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Neosho County at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons have done a majority of their scoring in the second halves of games this season. Of Hutchinson’s 18 goals scored through six games, 11 have been scored either in the second half or overtime.

Sophomore forward Hadlie Lowe is Hutchinson’s leading scorer with seven goals and two assists (16 points). She is the third-leading goal scorer in the league.

Sophomore midfielder Julia De Souza has six points in her last two games with a goal and two assists last week against Garden City and a huge insurance goal in the 87th minute of Saturday’s win over Neosho County. She has two goals and four assists for the season.

Defensively the Blue Dragons have posted three-straight shutouts and have allowed just one shot to reach either goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona or Madison Quarles over that 270-minute scoreless stretch.

Dodge City opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Southeast Community College and tied Pratt 2-2. The Conquistador have dropped two straight – 9-1 to Barton and 2-0 at Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons have a big week ahead. After Wednesday’s home matchup with Dodge City, Hutchinson travels to Johnson County (4-4, 1-2) at 5 p.m. on Saturday in Overland Park.

⚽️ HutchCC WSOC: Dragons play Dodge City at home Wednesday

After going 2-2 at the Sheila Worley Invitational in Sterling, Colorado over the weekend, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team remained at No. 17 in the NJCAA national rankings, which were released Monday.

Hutchinson fell to the fourth and fifth-ranked teams in the nation in Indian Hills and Western Nebraska, while defeating Casper College and No. 19 Northeastern Junior College. The Blue Dragons swept Casper 3-0 and beat Northeastern 3-1.

The Blue Dragons are on the road for a Wednesday night Jayhawk West battle at Colby, which starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Colby Events Center. Colby is 8-4 overall with all four losses coming in Jayhawk West play. Hutchinson is currently 15-5, 3-1 in the conference and have won 5 of its last 7 games.

Florida Southwestern owns the No. 1 ranking for the fourth week in a row and received all first place votes, sitting at a 9-0 record. Indians Hills, who the Blue Dragons have lost to in both meetings so far this season, went from No. 4 to No. 2. Salt Lake is ranked at No. 4, and Western Nebraska, who topped Hutchinson 3-1 in Colorado, is fifth.

Seward County is the highest-ranked Jayhawk West team at No. 12. Butler received votes in this week’s rankings.

The Blue Dragons are 3-5 this season against nationally ranked competition with two wins over Top 3 teams.

The Dragons have been ranked in three consecutive polls.

The Hutchinson Community College football team withstood its first Top 10 test of the year, topping No. 7 Iowa Central 31-28 in overtime last Saturday at Gowans Stadium. The victory moved the Blue Dragons into sole possession of No. 2 in the latest NJCAA Division I National Football Rankings, which were released Monday.

Hutchinson was tied for second with Iowa Western in last week's national poll, who had a bye week prior to those rankings. Hutchinson received three first place votes, and New Mexico Military Institute, who remains the top team in the nation in the NJCAA, earned seven first place votes.

New Mexico Military Institute escaped Navarro's upset big over the weekend, winning 40-35 after Navarro led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. Iowa Western, which is now outright third in the national rankings, defeated Garden City 43-13 to drop the Broncbusters to 0-3.

After halting Iowa Central on downs in the Tritons' opening drive of overtime, the Blue Dragons won the game with a 39-yard field goal by freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/segraves_cole_2w5s">Cole Segraves</a>. The Maize High School product had to kick the game winner into a 15 to 20-mph wind, securing the Blue Dragons' second Top 15 win of the year.

Hutchinson will have a bye week this week before hitting the road to open the Jayhawk Conference season at Coffeyville for a 7 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Sept. 24 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville.

Coffeyville dropped out of the rankings this week, but is still receiving votes after an 18-5 loss to Independence on Saturday. The Pirates move back into the rankings at No. 15.

Northwest Mississippi remains at No. 4 and Kilgore jumps into the fifth spot. Butler dropped two spots to No. 10 after falling to Snow in overtime, 50-49, on Saturday in El Dorado.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Just about the only negatives for the Chiefs in their 44-21 win Sunday in Arizona came from the trainer’s tent. LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Carson Wentz made clutch throws to erase big mistakes and pull out a victory that eluded Baker Mayfield and Joe Flacco. Russell Wilson is up next in the NFL’s Week 1 revenge tour. Wilson returns to Seattle on Monday night to play his first game for the Denver Broncos. Mayfield came up short Sunday against the Browns. Flacco had no chance against the Ravens. FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Cooper Rush is filling in for an injured Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for the second year in a row. This time the challenge will be much tougher for the sixth-year player. Prescott is out multiple weeks with a fracture near the thumb of his right hand. Rush won a game last season when Prescott had a calf strain. The victory helped keep the Cowboys on track for the NFC East title. Rush will have to do much more than that to keep Dallas in contention this time.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated resulting in serious physical injury after his truck hit two parked cars in 2021 and left a young girl with a traumatic brain injury. Reid entered his plea Monday. The son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid was scheduled to go on trial on Sept. 26. Prosecutors allege Britt Reid was intoxicated and speeding when he hit two stopped cars on an interstate exit ramp near Arrowhead Stadium in February 2021. Six people were injured, including Reid. Five-year-old Ariel Young suffered a traumatic brain injury. The plea deal means Reid faces a possible sentence of up to four years in prison, although he could be placed on probation.

(AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated resulting in serious physical injury after his truck hit two parked cars in 2021 and left a young girl with a traumatic brain injury. Reid entered his plea Monday. The son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid was scheduled to go on trial on Sept. 26. Prosecutors allege Britt Reid was intoxicated and speeding when he hit two stopped cars on an interstate exit ramp near Arrowhead Stadium in February 2021. Six people were injured, including Reid. Five-year-old Ariel Young suffered a traumatic brain injury. The plea deal means Reid faces a possible sentence of up to four years in prison, although he could be placed on probation.MORGANTOWN, W.Va. Off to one of its best starts in the past seven seasons, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team is finally ranked in the NJCAA national rankings.

The Blue Dragons were ranked No. 20 this week in the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer national rankings, release on Monday. This is the program's first national ranking since Oct. 17, 2017. At that time, the Blue Dragons were ranked No. 18, the last season the Blue Dragons started 6-0 was also in 2017.

The national ranking comes following back-to-back shutout wins over Garden City and Neosho County last week. The Dragons defeated Garden City 5-0, with four goals coming in the second half, and Neosho County 2-0, both goals in the second half.

The Blue Dragons are now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Jayhawk West.

The Blue Dragons join Butler, Cowley, Barton, and Coffeyville as Jayhawk Conference teams ranked in the Top 20 – Coffeyville ranked No. 17, No. Barton at No. 13, Cowley at No. 12 and Butler at No. 6. Western Wyoming, a team the Blue Dragons defeated 1-0 in the home opener on September. 4, was receiving votes this week.

Eastern Florida State reigns as the No. 1 team in the nation with all eight first-place votes. Tyler Junior College is ranked second and Seminole State College) is at No. 3. All three teams in the rankings remain undefeated.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday to salvage the finale of the three-game series.

Detroit was shut out for the 20th time this season, the most in the majors and five more than the next-closest teams, Kansas City and Pittsburgh.

Singer (8-4) allowed four hits and one walk with six strikeouts, and he retired 16 of the last 18 batters he faced. The Royals have won six of his last seven starts; he is 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA over that span.

“I wanted to get deep into that game, as deep as I could,” Brady said. “I think I came out well on the attack. The slider was kind of a pitch today that helped me the most. The fastball kind of came later in the game.”

Royals manager Mike Matheny said: “It was Brady as good as we’ve seen him all season. He had six strikeouts today, the majority with the slider, but the sinker was good, too. They played off each other really well.”

In 10 career starts against Detroit, Singer is 6-0 with a 2.44 ERA; 35 % of his 17 career victories have come at the Tigers’ expense.

“I don’t care who Brady was facing (today),” Matheny said. “The way he threw the ball, he was going to do very well.”

Kansas City got on the board early with Nick Pratto’s sacrifice fly scoring Bobby Witt Jr. in the first inning.

Witt had a pair of hits, including a double for his 51st extra-base hit, leading all major league rookies. Each of the Royals’ RBIs were contributed by rookies.

Drew Waters’ two-out double into the right-field corner scored Michael A. Taylor and Nate Eaton to expand Kansas City’s lead to 3-0 in the second inning.

In the fourth, Michael Massey jumped on Tyler Alexander’s first pitch, driving a cut fastball just fair down the right-field line. Massey’s second homer of the season made it 4-0.

“The hitting (coaches) did a great job with the (pregame) report and just from watching the game, I could tell he liked to get ahead,” Massey said. “I was just trying to get a good pitch early and I was able to put a pretty good swing on it.”

Alexander (3-10) went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk.

Spencer Torkelson had the Tigers’ only extra-base hit, a one-out double in the seventh.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City coach Andy Reid looked slightly perplexed during Sunday's postgame press conference when asked why his quarterback Patrick Mahomes is so good in season openers.

“He’s pretty good all the time,” he said with a slight grin. “We're lucky to have him.”

Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns, Clyde Edwards-Helaire caught two touchdown passes and the Chiefs rolled to an impressive 44-21 road win over the Arizona Cardinals in the opener for both teams.

The game was never in doubt after the opening minutes, with Mahomes picking apart the Cardinals’ defense with his usual array of good decisions and deft passing touch. The quarterback was playing his first NFL game against Kliff Kingsbury, who coached Mahomes in college at Texas Tech and now leads the Cardinals.

The student put on quite a show for his mentor: The 2018 MVP threw three touchdown passes on Kansas City’s first three drives.

After his fourth touchdown, he turned toward the Cardinals' sideline for a little trash talk, holding up four fingers to remind them of the damage he had already caused against the Arizona defense.

Mahomes said no matter how successful he becomes, he'll always feel like the underdog. He's now 5-0 in season openers, throwing 18 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

“I'm just a guy from Texas Tech they said couldn't play in the NFL,” Mahomes said. “I've always had that mindset of proving we're the Kansas City Chiefs, we still can win the AFC Championship, win the AFC West and win the Super Bowl.”

Tight end Travis Kelce caught eight passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. It was his 30th career game with at least 100 yards receiving. Kansas City outgained Arizona 488 yards to 282. Mahomes completed 30 of 39 passes.

“We always believed we were going to go out there and put on a show,” Mahomes said. “Guys did that.”

Kansas City jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the opening drive, capping an 11-play, 75-yard march with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Kelce. The Chiefs pushed ahead 14-0 later in the first on a nifty play from Mahomes, who threw an underhanded shovel pass to Edwards-Helaire for the 3-yard score.

The Chiefs led 23-7 by halftime after Harrison Butker, who missed part of the first half with a left ankle injury, made a 54-yard field goal with two seconds left in the second quarter.

Kansas City — which is trying to make the AFC title game for a fifth straight season — had a 37-7 advantage by the fourth quarter.

It was a rough start for Arizona, which also suffered through a brutal ending to 2021. The Cardinals have lost six of seven games dating to last season, including the playoffs.

“They beat us in every way,” Kingsbury said. “There is no denying it, no hiding from it. We didn’t execute in any phase and they played at a high level.”

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was playing his first game since being rewarded with a $230.5 million, five-year contract during the offseason. He finished 22-of-34 passing for 193 yards and two touchdowns, though much of that production came when the Chiefs already had control of the game.

“You can either start sulking about it or look in the mirror for what it is,” Murray said. “It's a long season. We got punched in the mouth. How do you respond?”

The Cardinals came into Week 1 missing some of their best players. Three-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins was suspended for the season's first six games after violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy. Star defensive lineman J.J. Watt was inactive because of a calf injury.

Butker left the game in the first quarter because of an ankle injury, so the Chiefs turned to safety Justin Reid to handle the job.

Reid was made 1 of 2 attempts on extra points and also blasted a kickoff through the back of the end zone for a touchback. The safety was prepared for his role as the emergency kicker: He made an extra point during a preseason game.

Butker returned late in the second quarter.

Mahomes completed touchdown passes on the first three drives of Kansas City's season. He's the second quarterback to do that since at least 1991. The other was Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers in 2011.

Chiefs: RG Trey Smith (ankle) left the game in the first half and didn't return. ... CB Trent McDuffie (hamstring) left the game in the second half. ... Mahomes fell on his left wrist during the first quarter, which is his non-throwing arm. The quarterback said he was sore, but postgame tests didn't reveal any structural damage.
