🏀 🎧 Salthawk Basketball teams both soar past the Eagles

MAIZE, Kan.—Both Hutch High Basketball teams continue to stay undefeated on the season as they traveled to Maize High School on Tuesday and came away with two victories.

Hutch High Girls were victorious 39, Maize 20.  The Hutch High boys won their contest 61-46 in the late game.

Girls Game:

Hutch High used 3 scoring runs in a game plagued by turnovers by both teams in route to a 39-20 victory over the winless Eagles.  Hutchinson trailed 6-5 in the first quarter then put together a 6-0 run an another 13-3 run to lead at halftime 21 to 12. Both teams scored 6 points apiece in the 3rd quarter before the Salthawks closed out the game on a 12-2 run to win 39-20.

The Salthawks were paced by Grace Posch who had 12 points on 4 three-point baskets. Josie McClean tossed in 10 points including a couple key trey's. Mya Thompson added 9 points including going perfect from the foul stripe on 5 of 5 shooting. Aliyah Green scored 4 and Hannah Ames 4 points each. Brynley Smith paced Maize with a game high 7 points. Mattie Brownell scored all of her 6 points in the first half.

Hutch High (7-0) hosts Great Bend in a non-league game at the SAC on Friday night.

Boys Game:

Hutch High used tough defence to defeat the Eagles 61-46 by using a strong 3rd quarter as the have all year long.  The Salthawks outscored the Eagles 17 to 9 in the third quaerter to build a 49 to 31 lead into the fourth.

Hutch was paced by Garrett Robertson's 21 points before the sharp shooting guard went down with a hyper-extented knee with 41.1 seconds to play in the game. Robertson was able to leave the floor under his own power and looked to be ok after the contest. The super guard combo of Dauntay King and Terrell King had 9 and 7 points to follow up Robertson in scoring along with Julian Smith's 9 points including a couple 3 points baskets in the third quarter. Nic Lange had a solid night with 6 points after being saddled with foul trouble in the first half.  Bradyn Rodriquez filled in for Lange and had 4 points of his own in the first half.  Wade Meyer added 5 first half points.

Maize was led in scoring by freshman Brayden Myovela with 13 points, plus Jaxon Booth had 12 points including a couple of 3 point baskets.  Tay Williams chipped in 7.

Hutchinson (7-0) returns home on Friday to host the Great Bend Panthers (4-4) at the SAC for a non-league match up. The Panthers got a 64-47 win over Great Bend on Tuesday night.

Side Note:

The Salthawks, ranked #3 this past week by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association are one of three undefeated teams in class 5A this season.  Topeka-Highland Park (5-0)and Wichita's Kapaun Mt. Carmel (7-0) are the other two undefeated teams. 

Kapaun is coached by former Hutchinson Blue Dragon Coach Steve Eck.  Hutch High's head coach Bryan Miller was an assistant on Eck's Blue Dragon coaching staff three years ago prior to Miller taking the Hutch High job. Eck has been the Kapaun head coach the past two years.
