KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay was suspended by the NFL for four games Monday for violating its personal conduct policy.

Gay was arrested in January in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kansas, and charged with misdemeanor criminal property of damage of less than $1,000. Gay's representative, Maxx Lepselter, said at the time that Gay broke a vacuum that belonged to the mother of his son during an argument in which nobody was harmed.

Gay agreed to a diversion program in June to resolve the criminal case.

There was no appeal of the penalty, so Gay will miss Sunday's game in Indianapolis along with games against Tampa Bay, Las Vegas and Buffalo.

NFL rules prohibit him from interacting with the team during the first two weeks.

The Chiefs, who parted with veteran Anthony Hitchens after last season, are counting heavily on Gay to help solidify the linebacker spot alongside second-year pro Nick Bolton. Gay started their first two games against the Cardinals and Chargers and is tied for second on the team in tackles, tackles for loss and passes defended.

“I definitely feel like my role has increased,” Gay acknowledged during training camp. "I feel like me and Nick, we have bigger roles to fill and to lead this defense, to lead this team on the defensive side and just do what we need to do to make sure we’re in position to lead.”

Third-round pick Leo Chenal is the likeliest candidate to replace Gay in the lineup. The Chiefs also have Elijah Lee and Darius Harris, who play primarily special teams, and undrafted rookie Jack Cochrane on the roster.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals today named their Players and Pitchers of the Year for their Double-A and Triple-A affiliates, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and Omaha Storm Chasers.

All 12 Players and Pitchers of the Year will be honored at Kauffman Stadium on Friday, Sept. 23 on Futures Night. Totals listed below for players at Triple-A Omaha are through Sunday’s games, as the Storm Chasers have 10 games remaining on their regular season schedule.

Brewer Hicklen, 26, earned Omaha Player of the Year honors and has posted a .246/.350/.499 slashline (111-for-451, .849 OPS) with 82 runs scored, 24 doubles, 28 home runs, 83 RBI and 34 stolen bases. With two series remaining, Hicklen secured the fourth “20-20-20” season by a Royals minor leaguer since 2005, joining 2021 Omaha Player of the Year Bobby Witt Jr., Alex Gordon (2006) and Alan Moye (2005). After beginning the season with an .822 OPS in April, going 20-for-74 with 8 extra-base hits, the right-handed hitting outfielder knocked a grand slam on May 17 vs. St. Paul and was selected by the Royals just 9 days later as a replacement player, making his Major League debut on May 26 at Target Field against the Twins. 

Through play this past weekend, Hicklen ranks among Triple-A leaders in home runs (28, T-4th), extra-base hits (55, 6th), stolen bases (34, T-7th) and total bases (225, 10th). Hicklen was originally selected by the Royals out of the University of Alabama Birmingham in the seventh round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft by scout Nick Hamilton.

Andrés Núñez, who will celebrate his 27th birthday tomorrow, was crowned the Omaha Pitcher of the Year and has pitched to a 3.41 ERA (23 ER in 60.2 IP) with 69 strikeouts to just 14 walks in 52 relief appearances for the Storm Chasers, going 5-3 with a team-high-tying 7 saves. Núñez began the season by posting a 1.35 ERA (1 ER in 6.2 IP) over five outings in April, including wins in each of his last two outings on April 17 and 22. Following a tough May, he responded with a perfect June, in which he went 1-0 and didn’t allow a run over 11.1 innings, striking out 12 batters while not issuing a walk. The right hander continued his hot streak through July, as he pitched 10.2 innings of 1-run ball with 18 strikeouts and just 3 walks, combining for a 0.41 ERA (1 ER in 22.0 IP) over two months for the Chasers. With two series left to play, he has gone 7-for-7 in save opportunities in September since picking up his first Triple-A save on Sept. 2 at St. Paul. A native of Southwest Ranches, Fla., Núñez was selected by Kansas City out of Florida International University in the 29th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft by scout Alex Mesa.

After spending the first 35 games of his season with High-A Quad Cities, outfielder Tyler Gentry earned a mid-June promotion to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, where he slugged his way to Player of the Year honors in his second professional season, posting a .321/.417/.555 (88-for-274) slashline with the Naturals. Despite spending the first two months of the season in High-A, Gentry ranked in the top five of numerous offensive categories for the Naturals, including batting average (1st), slugging percentage (1st), OPS (1st), hit-by-pitches (10, T-1st), sacrifice flies (7, T-1st), on-base percentage (2nd), home runs (16, 2nd), RBI (63, 3rd) and total bases (152, 5th). After going 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA (7 ER in 19.0 IP) in April, the left hander hit his stride in May as he took home back-to-back Texas League Player of the Week awards from May 2-8 and 9-15, and finished with the Player of the Month title, going 3-1 with a 0.59 ERA (2 ER in 30.2 IP) with 29 strikeouts, 4 walks and a .144 (15-for-104) opponents’ batting average. He made one final start in Northwest Arkansas on June 1 before being promoted to Triple-A Omaha, where he will finish the campaign. Rafael Devers had four hits and three RBI, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 13-3 on Sunday.

Tommy Pham added three hits and three RBI, and Kiké Hernández scored four times. Last-place Boston had dropped three of four and seven of 10 overall.

Xander Bogaerts, who can opt out of his contract with the Red Sox at the end of the season, added two hits with an RBI double, raising his average to .316. His double moved him into a tie with Dom DiMaggio (308) for ninth on Boston’s career list.

Bogaerts, who turns 30 on Oct. 1, also got his 1,400th hit, making him the fourth player with Boston to reach that total before turning 30.

He joined Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Bobby Doerr and Jim Rice.

Salvador Perez hit a solo homer for Kansas City. Vinnie Pasquantino and Drew Waters each had an RBI double.

Making a 30th start for the second straight year, Boston’s Nick Pivetta (10-11) gave up three runs in five innings.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Stuart Fairchild homered and Luis Cessa tossed five shutout innings to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals and Albert Pujols. Pujols is sitting on 698 home runs and went 0 for 4. He is fourth on the all-time home run list behind Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714). The Cardinals have 14 games left. St. Louis had a three-game winning streak snapped. Fairchild hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Jordan Montgomery. Spencer Steer had a run-scoring hit for the Reds, who had lost nine of their previous 10 games.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Aaron Judge hit his 58th and 59th home runs of the season to move within two of Roger Maris’ American League record with 16 games remaining and lead the New York Yankees over the Milwaukee Brewers 12-8. Judge added a two-run double in the ninth as part of a four-hit day for New York, which hit five homers and avoided a three-game sweep. The Yankees opened a 5 1/2-game lead over second-place Toronto in the AL East. Judge’s 11th multihomer game tied the season record set by Detroit’s Hank Greenberg 1938 and matched by the Chicago Cubs’ Sammy Sosa in 1998.

DENVER (AP) — Russell Wilson overcame a slow start and a cascade of boos in his Denver debut Sunday to lead the bungling Broncos past the Houston Texans 16-9 for rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett’s first NFL win. For much of the day, it was just as unsightly as Wilson’s return to Seattle six days earlier, replete with a hostile crowd, problematic play calls, red zone quicksand and a profusion of head-scratching penalties. The Broncos (1-1) were flagged 13 times for 100 yards, giving them 25 penalties on the year, their most ever in back-to-back games. But they pulled it out on defense, holding Houston (0-1-1) to a trio of field goals by Ka’imi Fairbairn.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Tua Tagovailoa threw for 469 yards and six touchdowns, four of which came during a spectacular fourth quarter as the Miami Dolphins rallied from a 21-point deficit to beat the Baltimore Ravens 42-38. Tagovailoa’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle with 14 seconds left completed the incredible comeback after Miami trailed 35-14 with under 13 minutes remaining. Tyreek Hill had touchdown catches of 48 and 60 yards during that rally, the latter of which tied the game with 5:19 to play. Justin Tucker kicked a 51-yard field goal with 2:18 remaining to put Baltimore ahead, but that was far too much time for Miami’s offense, which the Ravens didn’t come close to stopping in the final quarter.

UNDATED (AP) — Call it a Comeback Sunday the NFL hasn’t seen in years. The Dolphins and Cardinals made history by overcoming 20-point halftime deficits to win on the same day while the Jets rallied from a 13-point deficit in the final two minutes. Two other teams almost joined the club. The Falcons fought back from a 28-3 third-quarter deficit - that score sounds familiar in Atlanta - only to fall short against the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Joe Burrow helped the Cincinnati Bengals erase a 17-3 halftime deficit in Dallas but Brett Maher kicked a 50-yard field goal as time expired to give the Cowboys a 20-17 win.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Brett Maher kicked a 50-yard field goal as time expired, and the Dallas Cowboys held on to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 20-17 after losing a two-touchdown halftime lead. Joe Burrow got the Bengals even at 17-17 by leading a 19-play drive in the fourth quarter, throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins and finding Tyler Boyd for the 2-point conversion. After the Cowboys stopped the Bengals with about a minute remaining, Cooper Rush got the Cowboys in range for Maher to help Dallas win the second time in two career starts filling in for the injured Dak Prescott.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Texas Tech linebacker Bryce Ramirez is still hospitalized after suffering a gruesome leg injury in the Red Raiders’ loss at 12th-ranked North Carolina State. Sports medicine staff from Texas Tech were with Ramirez at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The fourth-year junior fractured his lower left leg on Saturday. His leg bent below the knee when the pile rolled on him after a tackle, and was twisted abnormally as he laid on the grass. Texas Tech says its personnel will be with Ramirez until he is able to safely travel back to Lubbock.

UNDATED (AP) — Being a good, but definitely not great, quarterback can be a rough ride in college football, especially when fans see only a ceiling they wish was higher. This is the life that Penn State’s Sean Clifford and Oregon’s Bo Nix have led. On Saturday, the veteran quarterbacks proved their worth. Clifford led the 22nd-ranked Nittany Lions to one of their most impressive nonconference victories in years, a 41-12 win at Auburn. Nix threw for two touchdowns and ran for three more to lead the No. 25 Ducks to a 41-20 victory over No. 12 BYU. Meanwhile, now that Nebraska has moved on from Scott Frost, the question is who’s the next coach to be fired.

OVERLAND PARK – The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team dropped its first game of the season, falling 3-1 in a KJCCC road matchup at Johnson County.

The Blue Dragons fall to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Jayhawk West. Johnson County improves to 5-5 overall and has defeated Hutchinson seven straight times.

After Hutchinson owned possession and led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by sophomore Aimee Maher, the Cavaliers controlled the game in the second half netted all three of their goals in the final 45 minutes.

Maher’s goal was assisted by sophomores Ella-Mae Miller and Hadlie Lowe – Miller fired a pass into the box from distance and Lowe redirected it to Maher for her fourth-consecutive goal dating back to Wednesday’s 6-0 victory over Dodge City.

Johnson County tied the match up four minutes in to the second half with a shot that caught the wind and was out of reach of Blue Dragons goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona at the top corner. After a ball got past Felix-Cardona in the 64th minute to make it 2-1, Johnson County took a shot that hit the crossbar and was rebounded into the goal in the 73rd minute.

The loss halts the Blue Dragons’ best start since 2017.

Saturday’s match marked just the second time this season the Blue Dragons did not have a goal in the second half. The other time was in a 1-0 win over Western Wyoming back on Sept. 4, the game-winner being tallied in the first half by Maher.

LINCOLN, Nebraska – Running her first collegiate 5,000-meter race, Hutchinson Community College freshman Serenity Larson posted the second-fastest 5K time in Blue Dragon women’s cross country history on Saturday at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational at Mahoney Golf Course.

Larson ran a time of 18 minutes, 41.0 seconds to lead the Blue Dragon women to a fourth-place showing in the Gold Division on a rainy morning in Nebraska.

Larson is just the fourth Blue Dragon in history to break the 19-minute mark over 5,000 meters. Only Lisayo Ewoi has a faster time. She ran 18:29.1 in 2018. Larson moves past Ruth Limo, who ran 18:50.9 in 2001. Louise Cocking is the only other Blue Dragon to break 19 minutes. Cocking ran a 18:56.4 in 2020.

Larson was the second-highest finisher among junior college runners on Saturday. Colby’s Emily Diercks was the top NJCAA runner on Saturday with a 22nd-place time of 18:20.8.

Larson was one of four Top 100 finishers for the Blue Dragons in the 29-team event that featured numerous NCAA Division I teams, as well as NCAA Division II and III teams, several NAIA teams and NJCAA teams.

Freshman Gracie Lambert posted the 14th-fastest Blue Dragon time at 5,000 meters with a time of 19:25.9. Lambert finished 82nd.

Freshman Taylor Hoskinson was 97th in a time of 19:39.9. Cocking was 98th with a time of 18:41.7. The fifth Blue Dragon scorer was freshman Ellie Van Zelfden, who was 183rd with a time of 21:16.1

Northwest Missouri State won the women’s Gold Division team title with 28 points. Nebraska-Kearney was second with 56 points. Concordia University was third and the Blue Dragons were fourth. The Blue Dragons were the top NJCAA team to place. Cloud County was seventh and Garden City was 14th overall.

+ Sophomore Sydney Grauer was 191st with a time of 21:31.5.

BOSTON (AP) — After scratching out just six runs in a four-game losing streak, the Kansas City batters felt like they owed their pitchers a little more support.

Then they realized&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/41172/brady-singer">Brady Singer</a>&nbsp;didn't really need it.

Singer delivered his second straight scoreless outing, pitching out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam to deliver six shutout innings on Saturday and help the Royals beat the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/team/_/name/bos/boston-red-sox">Boston Red Sox</a>&nbsp;9-0.

“It was a nice showing from the offense, take a little stress off the pitchers because they’ve been picking us up and we haven’t really been doing anything for them,” said first baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/4109109/vinnie-pasquantino">Vinnie Pasquantino</a>, who had three hits and drove in three runs. “Brady doesn’t need any help, but it’s always nice when we give him something."

Pitching in Fenway Park for the first time, Singer (9-4) won his fifth straight decision, allowing five singles and a walk while striking out five. The 26-year-old College World Series champion from Florida has not allowed a run in 13 innings over two starts, and he has not lost in eight starts since Aug. 3.

On a staff with six-time All-Star and 2009 Cy Young Award winner&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/5883/zack-greinke">Zack Greinke</a>, Singer has developed into the No. 1 starter.

“The word ‘ace’ keeps coming out. We’re kind of waiting for one of our guys to take control of that," manager Mike Matheny said. “We have a Hall of Famer with us in Zack, and he’s a guy that’s always going to lead the way. But to have somebody that’s going out on a consistent basis and giving us the kinds of starts, keeping us in games, at times even dominant. He’s just taking it to another level.”

RHP Franklin German made his major league debut for Boston, coming in to start the sixth inning. It didn’t go well.

HOUSTON, Texas –&nbsp;For the first time since 2009, the Kansas Jayhawks are 3-0 following a 48-30 victory over the Houston Cougars on Saturday, Sept. 17, at TDECU Stadium.

The Jayhawks overcame an early 14-point deficit by scoring touchdowns on six of its next seven drives, with the lone exception being a drive ended only by halftime. Junior quarterback Jalon Daniels led the Jayhawks, throwing for 158 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for a career-high 123 yards and two scores.&nbsp;

Kansas returns home next Saturday, Sept. 24, to host Duke in the final non-conference game on the schedule. Kickoff of that game is slated for 11:00 a.m. CT at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium with a nationally-televised broadcast on FS1.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Similar to last week, the Jayhawks had to work from behind early in the game after Houston scored on each of its first two drives to lead 14-0 less than eight minutes into the game.

On KU’s next possession, Daniels led the Jayhawks 75 yards in nine plays for its first score of the game. Kansas ran the ball on seven-of-nine plays in the drive, capped with a 12-yard scoring run by Daniels that made it 14-7 with 2:43 to play in the first.

The Kansas defense came up with a big play on Houston’s next drive, forcing an overthrow from quarterback Clayton Tune that found the arms of senior safety Kenny Logan, Jr., for his first interception of the season. Logan returned the pick into the red zone and the Jayhawks would move it to the 8-yard line following a penalty against Houston. Redshirt-sophomore running back Daniel Hishaw would score on the next play, tying the game at 14-all with 1:06 to play in the quarter.

KU’s defense forced a punt on Houston’s next possession and the offense was driving again when the game was sent into a lightning delay with 9:21 to play before halftime. On the first play following the delay, which lasted 69 minutes, Kansas scored to take its first lead of the game on a five-yard touchdown strike from Daniels to Luke Grimm, which put KU up 21-14.

The Jayhawks weren’t done, however, as it put together its longest drive of the year to add a fourth consecutive touchdown drive in the half. Kansas got the ball at its own 3-yard line and covered 97 yards in seven plays, the final of which being a 60-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Torry Locklin, which allowed the Jayhawks to carry a 28-14 lead into intermission.

Houston scored on its opening drive of the second half, but KU answered with a nine-yard touchdown run from Daniels that made it a two-score game at 35-21. Jereme Robinson then forced and recovered a sack fumble, which set up Kansas with another short field. The Jayhawks would cash in five plays later as Daniels took a handoff from Devin Neal and found Jared Casey for an eight-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 42-21. Houston scored on its final drive of the third quarter, but missed the extra point and KU led 42-27 heading to the fourth.

You see, Khokhar was crowned homecoming king prior to the game and he truly reined throughout the night scoring his three touchdowns on 15 carries for 88 yards.

While Khokhar scored three touchdowns it was junior running back Zion Burgess that set the pace with &nbsp;164 yards on 18 carries scoring from 75 yards out on a quick opener up the middle with 5:58 left to go in the 3rd quarter. &nbsp;Maize South had just cut the gap to 21-14 20 seconds prior with a Braxton Bigley 1 yard run when Burgess silenced the Maize South faithful.

Maize South kept the game tight until the Salthawks sophomore Kade Smith capped off the night with a 15 yard touchdown run with 8:55 remaining to give the Salthawks their final lead of the night at 35-21.

Thomas had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists for the Sun, who have now won all four of their elimination games in these playoffs, topping Dallas on the road in the first round and beating Chicago in Games 4 and 5 to close out that series. MINNEAPOLIS — Carlos Correa's solo home run in the first inning and Nick Gordon's two-run shot in the second gave the Minnesota Twins enough to hang on for a 3-2 victory to finish a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night and gain ground in the AL Central race.

The Twins (72-70) pulled within four games of first-place Cleveland. The Guardians (76-66) had their six-game winning streak stopped with an 8-2 loss to Chicago in the afternoon. The White Sox (74-70) are in second place, three games out.

Entering a last-ditch five-game series at Cleveland this weekend, the Twins salvaged some badly needed momentum. Trevor Megill (4-3), who threw the first of five scoreless innings by five Twins relievers, picked up the victory with a perfect fifth.

Jhoan Duran recorded his seventh save in as many attempts with a tense ninth, retiring his last three batters on a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts after the first two men reached.

After losing nine of 11, including a three-game sweep here last weekend by division-leading Cleveland, the Twins snapped to life against the ready-for-next-year Royals. This was their second sweep of Kansas City in four weeks. Minnesota has a 12-4 advantage in the season series, with three games remaining on the road against the Royals next week.

After Michael Taylor's RBI single in the second inning and Salvador Perez's leadoff home run in the fourth off Twins starter Dylan Bundy, the Royals put only two runners on until the consecutive singles against Duran to start the ninth.

The Twins outscored the Royals 13-5 in the series and allowed a total of only 13 hits.

Correa is batting .339 in his last 31 games (39 for 115) with eight home runs, 21 RBIs and 18 walks. Gordon's 11th career home run was his first against a left-hander, Royals starter Daniel Lynch (4-11).

In honor of the baseball-wide celebration of the late Hall of Fame player, humanitarian and Puerto Rico native Roberto Clemente, two Royals and six Twins chose to wear his old No. 21. That included Correa, a Puerto Rican, and Perez, who was his team's 2021 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award for character and community service.

Correa and Perez, as fate would have it, both hit their 21st homers.

"You grow up in Puerto Rico learning the history of Roberto Clemente and how great he was. All the people he touched off the field is what inspired me the most and that's the reason why I have a foundation to help others because my idol, Roberto Clemente, did it," Correa said before the game.

Twins 1B/2B/DH Luis Arraez, who departed the game Wednesday with tightness in his hamstring, was held out of the lineup as a precaution after an MRI test revealed no damage. The AL batting leader entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning.

The lineup remained well below full strength, with 2B Jorge Polanco (knee inflammation), CF Byron Buxton (hip strain), LF Alex Kirilloff (wrist inflammation) and RF Max Kepler (bruised leg, sore wrist) leading the list of sidelined regulars. Kepler is the only one not on the injured list.

"We need to bring guys back who can play. Bringing guys back who can play and then maybe need a day or two once they play a game, that's not going to help us as much as we think," manager Rocco Baldelli said before the game.

Royals:&nbsp;RHP Jonathan Heasley (3-8, 5.51 ERA) takes the mound on Friday night in Boston to begin a three-game series. RHP Michael Wacha (11-1, 2.69 ERA) pitches for the Red Sox.

Twins:&nbsp;The starter for the series opener in Cleveland on Friday night was still under consideration, with RHP Bailey Ober (0-2, 4.11 ERA) a strong candidate. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — In a showdown between the Chiefs and Chargers, two of the league's best teams led by two of the game's bright young quarterbacks, an unheralded seventh-round draft pick who a few years ago was working alongside his mother in a Wendy's restaurant stole the show.

The Chiefs' Jaylen Watson picked off Justin Herbert at the goal line early in the fourth quarter Thursday night, headed the other way and was never touched on a 99-yard go-ahead touchdown that propelled Kansas City to a 27-24 victory.

“I don't even remember what happened at that moment,” Watson said later. “It's all so surreal.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 235 yards with TD passes to Jerick McKinnon and Justin Watson, and fill-in kicker Matt Ammendola was perfect in place of injured Harrison Butker. But it was the Chiefs' defense, and Watson's highlight-reel interception, that allowed Kansas City (2-0) to overcome its early problems in an early divisional test.

“The thing that I'm most proud of,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “is that we stuck together. Nobody pointed any fingers.”

Two series after Watson's go-ahead touchdown, things got even worse for the Chargers (1-1) when Herbert was drilled by defensive end Mike Danna while delivering a throw.
