The Hutchinson Community College football team withstood its first Top 10 test of the year, topping No. 7 Iowa Central 31-28 in overtime last Saturday at Gowans Stadium. The victory moved the Blue Dragons into sole possession of No. 2 in the latest NJCAA Division I National Football Rankings, which were released Monday.

Hutchinson was tied for second with Iowa Western in last week's national poll, who had a bye week prior to those rankings. Hutchinson received three first place votes, and New Mexico Military Institute, who remains the top team in the nation in the NJCAA, earned seven first place votes.

New Mexico Military Institute escaped Navarro's upset big over the weekend, winning 40-35 after Navarro led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. Iowa Western, which is now outright third in the national rankings, defeated Garden City 43-13 to drop the Broncbusters to 0-3.

After halting Iowa Central on downs in the Tritons' opening drive of overtime, the Blue Dragons won the game with a 39-yard field goal by freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/segraves_cole_2w5s">Cole Segraves</a>. The Maize High School product had to kick the game winner into a 15 to 20-mph wind, securing the Blue Dragons' second Top 15 win of the year.

Hutchinson will have a bye week this week before hitting the road to open the Jayhawk Conference season at Coffeyville for a 7 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Sept. 24 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville.

Coffeyville dropped out of the rankings this week, but is still receiving votes after an 18-5 loss to Independence on Saturday. The Pirates move back into the rankings at No. 15.

Northwest Mississippi remains at No. 4 and Kilgore jumps into the fifth spot. Butler dropped two spots to No. 10 after falling to Snow in overtime, 50-49, on Saturday in El Dorado.

Flacco had no chance against the Ravens. Wentz didn’t face his former team - he’ll play against the Eagles in two weeks and the Colts next month - but his first game for the Washington Commanders came against Doug Pederson, the coach who drafted and developed him into an MVP candidate by his second season before both were quickly run out of Philadelphia.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Cooper Rush is filling in for an injured Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for the second year in a row. This time the challenge will be much tougher for the sixth-year player. Prescott is out multiple weeks with a fracture near the thumb of his right hand. Rush won a game last season when Prescott had a calf strain. The victory helped keep the Cowboys on track for the NFC East title. Rush will have to do much more than that to keep Dallas in contention this time.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated resulting in serious physical injury after his truck hit two parked cars in 2021 and left a young girl with a traumatic brain injury. Reid entered his plea Monday. The son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid was scheduled to go on trial on Sept. 26. Prosecutors allege Britt Reid was intoxicated and speeding when he hit two stopped cars on an interstate exit ramp near Arrowhead Stadium in February 2021. Six people were injured, including Reid. Five-year-old Ariel Young suffered a traumatic brain injury. The plea deal means Reid faces a possible sentence of up to four years in prison, although he could be placed on probation.

(AP) — The early part of the 2022 schedule was supposed to be West Virginia’s best opportunity at putting together only the second winning football season under fourth-year coach Neal Brown. Instead, fans are in an uproar over the Mountaineers’ first 0-2 start since 1979. Many are pleading for a coaching change. Saturday's overtime loss to Kansas dropped Brown's record to 17-20. Athletic director Shane Lyons says he is as disappointed as the fans and that on-field results have not met expectations. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart of Saturday’s home game against California.

🏈 Seahawks win over Wilson, Broncos Monday night

Off to one of its best starts in the past seven seasons, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team is finally ranked in the NJCAA national rankings.

The Blue Dragons were ranked No. 20 this week in the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer national rankings, release on Monday. This is the program's first national ranking since Oct. 17, 2017. At that time, the Blue Dragons were ranked No. 18, the last season the Blue Dragons started 6-0 was also in 2017.

The national ranking comes following back-to-back shutout wins over Garden City and Neosho County last week. The Dragons defeated Garden City 5-0, with four goals coming in the second half, and Neosho County 2-0, both goals in the second half.

The Blue Dragons are now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Jayhawk West.

The Blue Dragons join Butler, Cowley, Barton, and Coffeyville as Jayhawk Conference teams ranked in the Top 20 – Coffeyville ranked No. 17, No. Barton at No. 13, Cowley at No. 12 and Butler at No. 6. Western Wyoming, a team the Blue Dragons defeated 1-0 in the home opener on September. 4, was receiving votes this week.

Eastern Florida State reigns as the No. 1 team in the nation with all eight first-place votes. Tyler Junior College is ranked second and Seminole State College) is at No. 3. All three teams in the rankings remain undefeated.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday to salvage the finale of the three-game series.

Detroit was shut out for the 20th time this season, the most in the majors and five more than the next-closest teams, Kansas City and Pittsburgh.

Singer (8-4) allowed four hits and one walk with six strikeouts, and he retired 16 of the last 18 batters he faced. The Royals have won six of his last seven starts; he is 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA over that span.

“I wanted to get deep into that game, as deep as I could,” Brady said. “I think I came out well on the attack. The slider was kind of a pitch today that helped me the most. The fastball kind of came later in the game.”

Royals manager Mike Matheny said: “It was Brady as good as we’ve seen him all season. He had six strikeouts today, the majority with the slider, but the sinker was good, too. They played off each other really well.”

In 10 career starts against Detroit, Singer is 6-0 with a 2.44 ERA; 35 % of his 17 career victories have come at the Tigers’ expense.

“I don’t care who Brady was facing (today),” Matheny said. “The way he threw the ball, he was going to do very well.”

Kansas City got on the board early with Nick Pratto’s sacrifice fly scoring Bobby Witt Jr. in the first inning.

Witt had a pair of hits, including a double for his 51st extra-base hit, leading all major league rookies. Each of the Royals’ RBIs were contributed by rookies.

Drew Waters’ two-out double into the right-field corner scored Michael A. Taylor and Nate Eaton to expand Kansas City’s lead to 3-0 in the second inning.

In the fourth, Michael Massey jumped on Tyler Alexander’s first pitch, driving a cut fastball just fair down the right-field line. Massey’s second homer of the season made it 4-0.

“The hitting (coaches) did a great job with the (pregame) report and just from watching the game, I could tell he liked to get ahead,” Massey said. “I was just trying to get a good pitch early and I was able to put a pretty good swing on it.”

Alexander (3-10) went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk.

Spencer Torkelson had the Tigers’ only extra-base hit, a one-out double in the seventh.

Tigers: Detroit and LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-4, 4.13 ERA) open a three-game series Monday by hosting the Houston Astros and LHP Framber Valdez (14-5, 2.64).

“He’s pretty good all the time,” he said with a slight grin. “We're lucky to have him.”

Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns, Clyde Edwards-Helaire caught two touchdown passes and the Chiefs rolled to an impressive 44-21 road win over the Arizona Cardinals in the opener for both teams.

The game was never in doubt after the opening minutes, with Mahomes picking apart the Cardinals’ defense with his usual array of good decisions and deft passing touch. The quarterback was playing his first NFL game against Kliff Kingsbury, who coached Mahomes in college at Texas Tech and now leads the Cardinals.

The student put on quite a show for his mentor: The 2018 MVP threw three touchdown passes on Kansas City’s first three drives.

After his fourth touchdown, he turned toward the Cardinals' sideline for a little trash talk, holding up four fingers to remind them of the damage he had already caused against the Arizona defense.

Mahomes said no matter how successful he becomes, he'll always feel like the underdog. He's now 5-0 in season openers, throwing 18 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

“I'm just a guy from Texas Tech they said couldn't play in the NFL,” Mahomes said. “I've always had that mindset of proving we're the Kansas City Chiefs, we still can win the AFC Championship, win the AFC West and win the Super Bowl.”

Tight end Travis Kelce caught eight passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. It was his 30th career game with at least 100 yards receiving. Kansas City outgained Arizona 488 yards to 282. Mahomes completed 30 of 39 passes.

“We always believed we were going to go out there and put on a show,” Mahomes said. “Guys did that.”

Kansas City jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the opening drive, capping an 11-play, 75-yard march with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Kelce. The Chiefs pushed ahead 14-0 later in the first on a nifty play from Mahomes, who threw an underhanded shovel pass to Edwards-Helaire for the 3-yard score.

The Chiefs led 23-7 by halftime after Harrison Butker, who missed part of the first half with a left ankle injury, made a 54-yard field goal with two seconds left in the second quarter.

Kansas City — which is trying to make the AFC title game for a fifth straight season — had a 37-7 advantage by the fourth quarter.

It was a rough start for Arizona, which also suffered through a brutal ending to 2021. The Cardinals have lost six of seven games dating to last season, including the playoffs.

“They beat us in every way,” Kingsbury said. “There is no denying it, no hiding from it. We didn’t execute in any phase and they played at a high level.”

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was playing his first game since being rewarded with a $230.5 million, five-year contract during the offseason. He finished 22-of-34 passing for 193 yards and two touchdowns, though much of that production came when the Chiefs already had control of the game.

“You can either start sulking about it or look in the mirror for what it is,” Murray said. “It's a long season. We got punched in the mouth. How do you respond?”

The Cardinals came into Week 1 missing some of their best players. Three-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins was suspended for the season's first six games after violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy. Star defensive lineman J.J. Watt was inactive because of a calf injury.

Butker left the game in the first quarter because of an ankle injury, so the Chiefs turned to safety Justin Reid to handle the job.

Reid was made 1 of 2 attempts on extra points and also blasted a kickoff through the back of the end zone for a touchback. The safety was prepared for his role as the emergency kicker: He made an extra point during a preseason game.

Butker returned late in the second quarter.

Mahomes completed touchdown passes on the first three drives of Kansas City's season. He's the second quarterback to do that since at least 1991. The other was Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers in 2011.

STERLING, Colorado – Saturday had a slow start for the No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team, but it closed strong on the final day of the Northeastern Junior College Sheila Worley Invitational at the Bank of Colorado Event Center.

Facing another rugged weekend schedule dotted with three nationally ranked opponents, the Blue Dragons finished 2-2 for the weekend after splitting matches on Wednesday.

In a rematch of a five-set season-opening loss to No. 4 Indian Hills, the Warriors dominated the Blue Dragons on Saturday with a 25-21, 25-10, 25-18 victory. The Blue Dragons then faced tournament host and 19th-ranked Northeastern and finished the weekend with a four-set win over the Plainsmen, 25-23, 16-25, 28-26, 25-23.

Hutchinson is now 15-5 heading into a Wednesday Jayhawk West road match at Colby, the Blue Dragons’ only action of the entire week.

Middle blockers Anna Dean and Blondie Penaflor led the way for the Blue Dragons to capture their third victory of the season over a nationally ranked opponent. Hutchinson is 3-5 against ranked competition this season.

Dean had 11 kills and three total blocks to pace the Blue Dragons. Penaflor was right behind with nine kills and five total blocks. Alejandra Briseno also had nine kills.

Setter Andrea Serrano had 35 assists to guide a balanced offensive attack for the Blue Dragons. Serrano posted her fifth double-double of the season with 11 digs.

Morgan Harvey finished with 15 digs to lead the Dragons on the back row. Perrine Blanc had eighth digs. Harvey and Samantha Saunders had two service aces each.

Second halves and the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team have become great partners this season.

After scoring 4 of its 5 goals against Garden City in the second half earlier in the week, the Blue Dragons broke a scoreless tie on Saturday with two second-half tallies to defeat Neosho County 2-0 in a Jayhawk Conference contest at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons start a season 6-0 for the first time since 2017 and are 3-0 in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons play host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Neosho County dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Jayhawk East.

After being tied 0-0 at the half, the Blue Dragons started to generate more quality possession in the second half. The Dragons had one goal disallowed in the second half.

Sophomore Zara Lawless finally broke the tie with a strong shot from 28-yards out that carried against the wind and sailed into the top corner of the goal to put the Blue Dragons up 1-0 in the 78th minute. The goal was Lawless’ first of the season and second of her career. The goal was also her first career game-winning goal.

Similarly, in the 87th minute, sophomore Julia De Souza blasted a powerful shot from just outside the penalty box to give the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead. De Souza’s goal is her second of the season. She has scored goals in back-to-back games.

The Blue Dragons posted their third-consecutive shutout and it was the second time this season and 50th time in program history the Blue Dragons did not allow a shot on goal. Hutchinson out-shot Neosho County 12-0.

Blue Dragon sophomore goalkeeper Madison Quarles (3-0) recorded her second straight shutout.

Hutchinson is now 14-2 all-time against Neosho County and have defeated the Panthers 14 consecutive times.

Neosho County dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Jayhawk East.After being tied 0-0 at the half, the Blue Dragons started to generate more quality possession in the second half. The Dragons had one goal disallowed in the second half.Sophomore Zara Lawless finally broke the tie with a strong shot from 28-yards out that carried against the wind and sailed into the top corner of the goal to put the Blue Dragons up 1-0 in the 78th minute. The goal was Lawless’ first of the season and second of her career. The goal was also her first career game-winning goal.Similarly, in the 87th minute, sophomore Julia De Souza blasted a powerful shot from just outside the penalty box to give the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead. De Souza’s goal is her second of the season. She has scored goals in back-to-back games.Both goals were unassisted.The Blue Dragons posted their third-consecutive shutout and it was the second time this season and 50th time in program history the Blue Dragons did not allow a shot on goal. Hutchinson out-shot Neosho County 12-0.Blue Dragon sophomore goalkeeper Madison Quarles (3-0) recorded her second straight shutout.Hutchinson is now 14-2 all-time against Neosho County and have defeated the Panthers 14 consecutive times.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. –&nbsp;Kansas Football claimed a dramatic overtime victory at West Virginia on Saturday evening, overcoming a 14-point first-half deficit to earn a 55-42 victory at Milan Puskar Stadium.

The win is the Jayhawks’ first-ever win over the Mountaineers in Morgantown. Kansas trailed by 14 three times in the first half, including 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

After WVU tied the game with 35 seconds to play, the Jayhawks got the ball first in overtime. Kansas got a fresh set of downs from the 10-yard line following a roughing the passer call on WVU. KU cashed in on its set of downs when Jalon Daniels found Quentin Skinner in the end zone for his first career touchdown reception, a four-yard catch that put KU up 49-42.

KU would close out the game with an interception from Cobee Bryant, who jumped a WVU route for a pick-six, the Jayhawks’ second takeaway of the game, to make the final score 55-42.&nbsp;

Kansas moves to 2-0 on the year for the first time since 2011 and picks up a win in the Big 12 opener for the first time since 2009. This is also KU’s first win in a Big 12 conference opener on the road since 2008.&nbsp;

"It’s a big win and I’m so proud of our guys. We got off to a slow start. Penalties hurt us early and hurt us late. We said it was going to be a four-quarter game, but we didn’t know it would go plus. I’m so proud of their resilience and how they have gone about it. This is a good win to build off of."

The Jayhawks first score came on a nine-play drive that spanned 79 yards and took 5:01 off the clock. It was punctuated by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to tight end Mason Fairchild on the first play of the second quarter, marking the second straight game Daniels and Fairchild hooked up for a touchdown after a 2-yard score in the opener against Tennessee Tech.&nbsp;

After another touchdown drive from the Mountaineers to go up 21-7, the Kansas offense again responded. This time, Daniels orchestrated an 11-play, 75-yard drive that took 4:49 and ended with a six-yard touchdown rush from Devin Neal, his first of three total touchdowns on the night.&nbsp;

West Virginia answered, scoring a five-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-14 with 3:11 to play until halftime. The Jayhawks perfectly executed its final drive, going 75 yards in 10 plays, taking up 2:42 of game time to score and make it 28-21 with just 29 seconds to play in the half. WVU ran out the clock and went into intermission with that score.

KU got the ball first in the second half and needed just eight plays to go 75 yards, as a 40-yard strike from Daniels to Skinner set up the game-tying touchdown, a three-yard plunge from Daniel Hishaw. The touchdown, Hishaw’s second in as many games, knotted the score at 28-28 with 11:32 to play in the third.

Momentum remained with the Jayhawks as KU forced West Virginia to punt on its next drive. Although Kansas was also forced to punt, the Jayhawks’ Torry Locklin recovered a muffed punt from WVU, which put KU in position to take its first lead of the night. The Jayhawks would do just that six plays later, as Neal found the end zone for the third time on the night, a two-yard touchdown run to put KU up 35-28 with 4:00 to play in the third.

West Virginia would get a field goal on its ensuing drive, cutting the Jayhawks lead to 35-31 with 12:58 to play. It would only take KU four plays to extend its lead as the Jayhawks marched 65 yards in 1:56, capped off when Hishaw broke away for a 30-yard touchdown –&nbsp; his second on the night and third of the year. That score would give Kansas its first two-score lead of the day at 42-31 with 10:59 to play.&nbsp;

WVU drove 64 yards in 14 plays on its next drive, but the Jayhawks held the Mountaineers to three points and maintained a full score lead of 42-34 with 4:04 to play.

Kansas would punt the ball back to West Virginia with 2:17 to play and the Mountaineers used a 12-play, 85-yard drive to score a touchdown and tie the game with 35 seconds to play after a successful two-point conversion.

Next up for the Jayhawks is a trip to Houston on Saturday, Sept. 17, to face a future Big 12 Conference foe, the Houston Cougars, in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff of that game is slated for 3:00 p.m. CT on ESPNU from TDECU Stadium.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Victor Reyes drove in three runs, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 8-4 in a rain-shortened game on Saturday.

Javier Báez and Harold Castro each had two hits and two RBI as Detroit earned its third straight win. Matt Manning (2-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings of three-hit ball.

The Tigers went ahead to stay with three runs in the third against Jonathan Heasley (3-8). Reyes snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI triple. Báez doubled in Reyes and then scored on Castro’s single.

Reyes added a two-run single during Detroit’s four-run fifth, helping the Tigers build an 8-2 lead.

Heasley was charged with seven runs and seven hits in four-plus innings. The right-hander had gone 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA in his previous four starts.

Manning allowed two earned runs, struck out four and walked one. Since returning from the IL on Aug. 2, Manning has a 3.74 ERA over eight starts.

The No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team withstood four near-disastrous turnovers and walked off with an overtime victory in Saturday's NJCAA Top-10 clash at Gowans Stadium.

<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/segraves_cole_2w5s">Cole Segraves</a>&nbsp;kicked a game-winning 39-yard field goal into a feisty north wind to close out a 31-28 come-from-behind victory over No. 7 Iowa Central.

The Blue Dragons improve to 3-0 heading into the first of two bye weeks before traveling to Coffeyville on September 24. Iowa Central, playing its third-straight nationally ranked opponent, slipped to 2-1.

Segraves became the first Blue Dragon place kicker to boot a walkoff field goal since Luke Niemeyer kicked a 37-yard double-overtime game winner through the same north goal post at Gowans Stadium that Segraves kicked into on September 23, 2017 against Highland.

Getting to that point on Saturday was tenuous for the Blue Dragons.

After scoring the game's first points just 2 minutes, 3 seconds into the contest, Iowa Central scored the next 21 points unanswered and led 21-7 with 10:30 to play in the second quarter.

Hutchinson battled back to take a 28-21 when&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/simmons_jaheim_h2xm">Jaheim Simmons</a>&nbsp;scored on a 5-rush run with 6:27 to play in the third quarter. The Dragons then had to endure three fourth-quarter turnovers just to get to overtime.

The second Dragon turnover of the quarter led to the Tritons marching 67 yards in nine plays and tie the game at 28 on Keon'tay Fowler's 7-yard touchdown reception with 3:57 left in regulation.

Hutchinson was on the march for a potential game-winning score in regulation time. The Blue Dragons drove from their own 21 to the Triton 10 before losing a fumble with 12 seconds remaining.

Iowa Central had the first possession of overtime. Triton quarterback Omarion Bartlett was stuffed for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Dragon 16 by&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kirksey_terry_evb1">Terry Kirksey</a>&nbsp;and Jerrell Boykins to keep ICCC off the board.

Facing third-and-7 from the Triton 24 on their first overtime possession, Blue Dragon running back Tre Bess, who was Hutchinson's leading rusher with 89 yards on 18 carries, got a key 2-yard rush to the 22. That set up Segraves' game-winner from 39 yards out that, thanks to a 15 mph north wind blowing in his face, barely cleared the cross bar for the game-winner.

Lost in the smoke of Hutchinson's overtime victory was the fact that Blue Dragon sophomore quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;became the program's career leader in touchdown passes. Laible threw career touchdown passes 50 and 51 on Saturday to surpass Luke Barnes as Hutchinson's career leader. Receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/woods_micah_qrwd">Micah Woods</a>&nbsp;caught both the tying and record-breaking touchdowns. The record-tying TD was from 15 yards out with 11:58 to play in the first quarter. Laible then moved past Barnes when his 36-yard strike to Woods tied the game at 21-21 with 10:17 to play in the third quarter.

The Blue Dragons out-gained Iowa Central 394-372 to extend their winning streak to nine games dating back to last season. The Dragons rushed for 161 yards and passed for 191. Iowa Central rushed for 169 yards and passes for 203 yards.

Laible completed 20 of 36 for 233 yards with two touchdowns and his first interception of the season. He was sacked three times.

Kansas trailed by 14 three times in the first half, including 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.After WVU tied the game with 35 seconds to play, the Jayhawks got the ball first in overtime. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College looked poised to take the game-winning kick with the wind Saturday afternoon at the end of regulation.

With the game knotted at 28, week two hero Rontavious Richmond fumbled for the second time. Iowa Central took over with 12 seconds and took a knee.

Overtime would not have been possible without a big extra point from Cole Segraves. The freshman kicker needed a 35-yard extra point with 10:17 left in the third quarter after Micah Woods caught a 36-yard touchdown pass and let the Iowa Central defense know about it.

The 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty was added to the try, but Segraves made good on the attempt.

It was not the last time he would be called upon to make a big kick into the wind and rain.

Hutchinson got off to a hot start after Woods caught the first TD of the day from Dylan Laible. The 15-yard strike tied Laible for the most touchdown passes in Dragon history. His 50th TD tied Luke Barnes.

The next 21 points belonged to No. 7 Iowa Central. Four quarterbacks played for the Tritons. Zach Marker started the day under center, but left after going 0-5 passing.

Justin Silverstein had better success. He only went 9 of 21, but notched two touchdown passes. One to Cal Weidemann to tie the game late in the first quarter and later in the second quarter on an 18-yard pass to Colton Hoag.

The two air strikes and a long TD run from Jadon Washington (69 yards), had the Dragon defense stunned.

Coach Drew Dallas said it was uncharacteristic of his defense to give up such a run.

Iowa Central took over with 12 seconds and took a knee.Overtime would not have been possible without a big extra point from Cole Segraves. The freshman kicker needed a 35-yard extra point with 10:17 left in the third quarter after Micah Woods caught a 36-yard touchdown pass and let the Iowa Central defense know about it.The 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty was added to the try, but Segraves made good on the attempt.It was not the last time he would be called upon to make a big kick into the wind and rain.Hutchinson got off to a hot start after Woods caught the first TD of the day from Dylan Laible. The 15-yard strike tied Laible for the most touchdown passes in Dragon history. His 50th TD tied Luke Barnes.The next 21 points belonged to No. 7 Iowa Central. Four quarterbacks played for the Tritons. Zach Marker started the day under center, but left after going 0-5 passing.Justin Silverstein had better success. He only went 9 of 21, but notched two touchdown passes. One to Cal Weidemann to tie the game late in the first quarter and later in the second quarter on an 18-yard pass to Colton Hoag.The two air strikes and a long TD run from Jadon Washington (69 yards), had the Dragon defense stunned.Coach Drew Dallas said it was uncharacteristic of his defense to give up such a run."With the exception of the long run, we played good defense," Dallas said. He went 6 of 7 for 46 yards and rushed for another 36.Hutchinson helped Iowa Central by giving up the ball four times (muffed punt, two fumbles and one interception)."We gave them four extra tries and they took advantage of them," Dallas said about the turnovers. Iowa Central did not fumble or throw an interception, but did turn the ball over a few times on downs.Dylan Laible's quarterback play was overshadowed by two big kicks from Segraves. Coach Dallas said the passing game was "kind of a blur at the moment" in his mind after the way Saturday's game ended.<figure>

 </figure>Laible went 20 of 36 for 233 yards and a touchdown. His one interception was not his fault as it bounced off a receiver. His two touchdowns on the day put him atop Hutchinson's all-time touchdown passing list (51).His second touchdown of the day knotted the game at 21.Hutchinson went into the break down 21-14 after a Jaheim Simmons 1-yard run with 23 seconds left in the first half. The run came on 4th and 1. Iowa Central challenged the play, saying Simmons did not break the goal line. After review, the play stood.Hutchinson withstood a 21-point run from Iowa Central and put on a 21-point run of its own.The surge started with the Simmons goal-to-go run, continued with Woods' 36-yard grab and was capped with another run from Simmons.This one came from 5 yards away to finish a 7-play, 64-yard drive.Iowa Central had the only score in the fourth quarter.It came with 3:57 left to play. Bartlett hit Cal Weidemann for the 7-yard score.Tied at 28, Hutchinson had a chance to win the game in regulation.The Dragons were driving behind Tre Bess and his 89 yards rushing. Bess put the Dragons in a first and goal-to-go situation, but exited the game with an injury.Last week's rushing hero (Richmond: 158 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown), fumbled the ball away with 12 seconds to go as Hutchinson tried to put the ball in the middle of the field for a game-winning kick.Iowa Central played for overtime and lost the toss.Hutchinson elected to play defense first and stopped the Tritons on a 4th and 1. Terry Kirksey had his biggest tackle of seven on the day when he stopped the run short.Starting from the 25 yard line, Hutchinson moved the ball enough to put Segraves in position to make the game-winning kick.Segraves missed from 40 and 41 in week one, but hit from 50 (on a play that was blown dead). Segraves hurt himself against Navarro and did not get to try the 50-yarder again in week one (Connor Gellender stepped in and left the attempt just short).With the wind and rain in his face, and the game on the line, Segraves had to wait for his big kick after Iowa Central tried to ice him.After the timeout, Segraves sent the 39-yarder sky high in the wind.
