🏀 K-State Coasts Past Kansas City, 69-53

The 2022 Jayhawk Conference champion Hutchinson Community College Football team had a total of 30 players on this year's All-KJCCC Football teams, which were released on Thursday.

The Blue Dragons had 14 first-team, four second-team and 12 honorable mention selections, including winners of two of the three major awards presented each season.

For the second time in three seasons, Blue Dragon head coach Drew Dallas was named the KJCCC Coach of the Year. Sophomore running back&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kedzior_dylan_601l">Dylan Kedzior</a>&nbsp;became the second-straight Hutchinson running back to earn KJCCC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Coffeyville safety Bishop Fitzgerald was named the league's 2022 Defensive Player of the Year.

DYLAN KEDZIOR – 2022 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR After a slow start to the season because of injury, Kedzior came to the rescue for the Blue Dragons at Coffeyville on September 24.

With Hutchinson trailing 9-7 in the fourth quarter, Kedzior entered the game early in the final quarter and had 12 carries for 85 yards and a 3-yard touchdown go-ahead touchdown run with 1:17 remaining to lead the Dragons to a 14-9 win.

That was the launching pad for the third-year 6-foot, 220-pound sophomore from Claremore, Oklahoma.

One week later, Kedzior rushed for a career-high 230 yards and three touchdowns against Butler. Starting with the final quarter against Coffeyville, Kedzior produced 578 yards and six touchdowns over a 13-quarter stretch.

For the season, Kedzior rushed for a league-best 923 yards on 119 carries with nine touchdowns. He is averaging a league-best 7.76 yards per carry.

In Hutchinson's come-from-behind 29-28 season-finale win over No. 4 Iowa Western Kedzior had 212 total yards with 136 rushing yards and 76 receiving yards with a 70-yard touchdown run and 76-yard touchdown reception.

Kedzior is the second-straight Dragon to win Offensive Player of the Year honors, joining Anwar Lewis last season.

DREW DALLAS, HUTCHINSON – 2022 COACH OF THE YEAR The third-year head coach of the Blue Dragons earned his second league Coach of the Year award after running the table in the regular season with a 6-0 league mark and a 10-0 overall record which leads Hutchinson into the postseason as the No. 1 team in the NJCAA.

The Blue Dragons won their third-straight KJCCC championship in a row under Dallas, winning the 2020/21 league title, the 2021 KJCCC Playoff championship and this season's regular-season crown.

The Blue Dragons are currently on a 16-game winning streak and Dallas is off to a 27-2 start at Hutchinson.

The 2022 Blue Dragons ranked first in the Jayhawk Conference in scoring (40.9 ppg), total offense (427.3 ypg) and rushing (194.1 yards per game) and was third in passing (233.2 yards per game).

Defensively, the 2022 Blue Dragons were first in the KJCCC in scoring defense (11.9 ppg) and rushing defense (88.8 ypg), second in total defense (265.0 ypg) and third in pass defense (176.2 ypg). The Dragons were second in quarterback sacks (31) and tied for first with 28 takeaways.

FIRST-TEAM OFFENSE The Blue Dragons had a staggering eight selections on the first team of the all-KJCCC team.

Quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;earned his second first-team selection. Laible is completing 57.4 percent of his passes for 1,996 yards with 20 touchdowns. Laible is now the Blue Dragons' career passing yards and touchdown pass leader.

In addition to Kedzior, two other Blue Dragon skilled position players earned first-team honors.

Receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/benson_malik_obrm">Malik Benson</a>&nbsp;is now a two-time first-team selection after team highs of 47 receptions for 809 yards and eight touchdowns.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/woods_micah_qrwd">Micah Woods</a>&nbsp;also earned first-team honors after making 26 catches for 435 yards and five touchdowns.

Fullback/H-Back&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/chislom_jamauri_0uay">Jamauri Chislom</a>&nbsp;is a rare three-time first-team All-Conference player. Known mostly for his blocking, Chislom had a career-high four catches for 29 yards in 2022.

Three offensive linemen – sophomore center J'onre Reed, freshman tackle&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/johnson_larry_e6um">Larry Johnson</a>&nbsp;and freshman guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/schuster_dez-mond_0ra7">Dez'Mond Schuster</a>&nbsp;– all earned first-team honors.

FIRST-TEAM DEFENSE The Blue Dragons placed five players on the first-team of the All-Jayhawk Defense this season.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/boykins_jr_jerrell_eo76">Jerrell Boykins Jr</a>. and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/schofield_jakobe_7fp0">JaKobe Schofield</a>&nbsp;are both defensive tackles who earned first-team honors. Boykins had 17 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery. Schofield had 16 tackles with 1.5 quarterback sacks, a pass broken up and a fumble recovery.

Defensive end Nikki Taylor was third in the KJCCC in quarterback sacks with seven. Taylor had 40 total tackles with 15 tackles for loss, five quarterback hurries and a safety.

Linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kirksey_terry_evb1">Terry Kirksey</a>&nbsp;is Hutchinson's leading tackler with 68 total tackles, including 28 solo stops. Kirksey had six tackles for loss, 2.5 quarterback sack and a fumble recovery.

Freshman cornerback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/morris_ja-maric_ynua">Ja'Maric Morris</a>&nbsp;is the second first-team secondary member. Morris had 30 tackles and was fourth in the KJCCC in interceptions with four. Morris also had six passes defended.

FIRST-TEAM SPECIAL TEAMS Freshman kicker&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/segraves_cole_2w5s">Cole Segraves</a>&nbsp;is the final first-team selection. Segraves has had a tremendous season, going 48 of 49 on extra points and 13 of 18 on field goals. Segraves has made his last six attempts.

Segraves has a long of 46 and has made three of at least 40 yards this season. Segraves' 13 field goals are second-most in single-season program history.

He kicked the overtime game winner in a 31-28 victory over No. 7 Iowa Central on Sept. 10 at Gowans Stadium.

SECOND-TEAM/HONORABLE MENTION SELECTIONS Four Blue Dragons earned second-team all-conference honors.

Offensive linemen Chris Morris and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/vimahi_izaya_rb2t">Izaya Vimahi</a>&nbsp;were second-team offensive selections. Whiteman averaged 37.8 yards per punt on 45 attempts. He had six punts of 50-plus yards and 10 land inside the 20-yard line.

🏈 Kedzior, Dallas earn top KJCCC Honors

MANHATTAN, Kansas -&nbsp;Despite trailing by seven points midway through the fourth quarter, Kansas State battled back to outscore (4/6) Iowa, 15-7 in the final five and a half minutes, to collect the 84-83 upset of the Hawkeyes at Bramlage Coliseum on Thursday night. The win was K-State's fifth victory over an Associated Press (AP) top-5 opponent in its history and its highest ranked win since downing fourth-ranked Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, on Jan. 2, 2002. This was the second time in two seasons K-State has defeated an AP top-10 opponent in Bramlage, as the Wildcats picked off tenth-ranked Baylor to begin Big 12 action last season. HOW IT HAPPENED - With K-State trailing by three, 81-78, with 2:13 remaining in the fourth quarter, Gabby Gregory went to work at the free throw line. She went 6-of-8 from the foul line to close out the game. She gave K-State a brief lead at 82-81 with 1:09 left, but a layup from Iowa's Monika Czinano with 51 seconds left put the Hawkeyes back in the lead, 83-82. - Gregory, who ended the night with 24 points including a 12-of-14 effort from the free throw line, made 1-of-2 with 38 seconds to play to tie the game at 83. On Iowa's next offensive possession, Jaelyn Glenn tied up Kate Martin in front of the Hawkeye bench to give K-State the ball with 8.5 seconds left as the possession arrow favored the 'Cats. - After a K-State timeout to advance the ball, Gregory was fouled on a post up with 3.7 seconds to play and made 1-of-2 free throws to give K-State the 84-83 lead. After an Iowa timeout to advance the ball, the ensuing offensive play and shot did not beat the buzzer as the ball was in Czinano's hand as the buzzer sounded. - K-State finished the night shooting 41.2 percent (28-of-68) from the field including 30.6 percent (11-of-36) from 3-point range and 81.0 percent (17-of-21) from the free throw line. Iowa tallied a 49.1 percent (27-of-55) effort but were held to 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from 3-point range. The Hawkeyes ended the night shooting 82.1 percent (23-of-28) from the foul line. - The Wildcat comeback started with 5:58 remaining in the fourth quarter, as Iowa's Caitlin Clark made her 12th and 13th free throws of the night to tie the Bramlage Coliseum record for free throws made by an opponent and put the Hawkeyes in front, 76-69. - Sophomore guard Serena Sundell started K-State's rally with a pair of free throws and followed with a layup to cut the deficit to three, 76-73, with 5:06 to play. Sundell ended the night with 24 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block. - After an Iowa layup, graduate transfer Sarah Shematsi connected on her career-best sixth 3-pointer of the night to bring the Wildcats back to within two, 78-76, and was followed by a steal and layup from Jaelyn Glenn to tie the game at 78 with three minutes remaining. Sundell owns 21 career games with five or more assists. - Sarah Shematsi recorded her third career game in double figures and her first at K-State. Her six connections from 3-point range, a new career-high, were the most by a Wildcat since Jaelyn Glenn made six at West Virginia on Jan. 8, 2022. "Well, it was a hell of a game, hell of a game. I thought really for 40 minutes, we trailed obviously a good portion of that, but never felt like we weren't right there, never felt like we weren't right there to make a push and never felt like we weren't battling. I think the part that we needed to answer was when we got down I think it was 76-69 and I thought Serena [Sundell] made big plays. I thought Sarah Shematsi hit big shots. Gabby [Gregory] at the end really willed us to the free throw line and was playing so tough and aggressive. Made plays defensively. Jay [Jaelyn Glenn] made some plays defensively. You know, you don't win a game like this where you don't have a lot of plays. You're not going to back your way into beating a top-five team in the country and we certainly didn't and we had to make plays." On if he recognized that the team was playing at a different level… "I'll tell you what I saw. I saw a different urgency out of our group in communication. I'll give you an example. I was gonna call an out of bounds play. We had a little lull and Serena had gathered everybody together and she had called her play and it was a great idea by her to post up. Now she smoked the layup. At that point I thought 'wow they were really engaged to what they need to be doing.' We're getting closer, I think to really connect with each other. In those stretches, like for example, there were stretches tonight where we needed to get Shematsi at least a look at three and everybody was on the same page of what we're trying to accomplish. That has started to come together this last week and so we're learning each other better. Gabby in the post, we want to do that more, we're kind of learning that. So all of that starting to come together better." On denying Caitlin Clark open looks down the stretch… "That was a little bit of adjustment the last four minutes. She [Caitlin] gets rid of it, okay, we're gonna deny her and everybody's got to be ready for her to go back door. She was going backdoor, setting cross screens with [Monika] Czinano that was giving us a little bit of trouble but all in all, they're impossible to stop for 40 minutes. You're picking your spots, and I thought our group really played well in the final five minutes." On how big this win is… "I told them you get opportunities during the season to be involved in some great games and you hope that you're involved in them and if you win them they're more special. The win was K-State's fifth victory over an Associated Press (AP) top-5 opponent in its history and its highest ranked win since downing fourth-ranked Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, on Jan. 2, 2002. This was the second time in two seasons K-State has defeated an AP top-10 opponent in Bramlage, as the Wildcats picked off tenth-ranked Baylor to begin Big 12 action last season. HOW IT HAPPENED - With K-State trailing by three, 81-78, with 2:13 remaining in the fourth quarter, Gabby Gregory went to work at the free throw line. She went 6-of-8 from the foul line to close out the game. She gave K-State a brief lead at 82-81 with 1:09 left, but a layup from Iowa's Monika Czinano with 51 seconds left put the Hawkeyes back in the lead, 83-82. - Gregory, who ended the night with 24 points including a 12-of-14 effort from the free throw line, made 1-of-2 with 38 seconds to play to tie the game at 83. On Iowa's next offensive possession, Jaelyn Glenn tied up Kate Martin in front of the Hawkeye bench to give K-State the ball with 8.5 seconds left as the possession arrow favored the 'Cats. - After a K-State timeout to advance the ball, Gregory was fouled on a post up with 3.7 seconds to play and made 1-of-2 free throws to give K-State the 84-83 lead. The Shockers (2-1) put last weekend's upset loss to Alcorn State behind them with a gritty defensive effort, holding the host Spiders to 37.7 percent from the field. Richmond (2-2) had won nine-straight and 18 of its last 19 home non-conference games coming in. The win marked WSU's eighth straight non-conference road kill going back to March of 2019. 🏀 Shockers Take Down Richmond on the Road

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Senior center Taiyanna Jackson collected her second consecutive double-double and recorded her 100th career block as she led the Jayhawks to a 79-74 win over Texas-Arlington on Wednesday evening at Allen Fieldhouse.

The win improves Kansas to 2-0 on the year, a feat the Jayhawks have accomplished in six consecutive seasons.

Four Jayhawks scored in double-digits, led by junior transfer Wyvette Mayberry, who collected 20 points – including 13 in the fourth quarter. In addition, Jackson and junior Chandler Prater scored 16 points apiece while senior Zakiyah Franklin added 10.&nbsp;

"I thought Taiyanna was terrific, going 6-for-9 from the field. She was 4-for-5 at the break, and we can’t get her more shots because we keep throwing it to the other team. Zakiyah was solid. I thought Chandler was outstanding. I thought Mia was really, really good. Wyvette, after overcoming some turnovers, still had the confidence to make plays down the stretch and take the shots that she took. I think says a lot about her moxie."

Kansas got off to a quick start against UTA, taking a 15-6 lead. The Lady Mavericks went on 6-0 run to cut the lead down to only two points by the end of the first quarter. At the 3:50 minute mark in the second quarter, Mayberry sank a three-pointer to start an 8-0 run for the Jayhawks that quickly turned things around. UT-Arlington was able to sink a couple points of their own, but the Jayhawks responded with a 9-0 run that sent them into the locker room with the largest lead of the half at 38-22.

The Jayhawks had a slow second half start and UTA was able to hold the Jayhawks scoreless for the first four minutes. Jackson ended the scoreless stint with a layup finish, before Mia Vusic nailed her second three-pointer of the game to send the Jayhawks on a 6-0 scoring run, 46-33. With 5:05 to play in the third, Jackson would block a UTA jumper to record her 100th career block in just her 33rd career game at Kansas. The Lady Mavericks would go on a 6-0 run at the end of the third quarter to cut the lead to two, but the Jayhawks would add two more to stay ahead by four at the end of the third quarter, 51-47.&nbsp;

UT Arlington would keep it tight in the fourth quarter, cutting the Kansas lead down to one, however, the Jayhawks would never give up the lead. Mayberry collected back-to-back baskets going on a 5-0 run and tallied nine points in the last four minutes of the game. Mayberry’s stellar 13-point fourth quarter would lead the Jayhawks to a 79-72 win against the Lady Mavericks, collecting their second home game this season.&nbsp;

The Jayhawks hit 8-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter to close out the victory and recovered from a slow second half start to shoot 50.0 percent (13-of-26) after halftime. For the game, KU shot 50.9% (28-of-55) from the field. The Jayhawks collectively had 46 points from in the paint and pulled down 35 rebounds.

The Jayhawks are back at home on Sunday, November 20 to host UTRGV. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT with the game being carried live on Big 12 NOW.

Notes Senior Taiyanna Jackson collected three blocks and tallied her 100th career block. Jackson also recorded her second consecutive double-double with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting while grabbing 13 rebounds. Junior Chandler Prater tallied a single-game career high five blocks, the most single game blocks by a Kansas player since Feb. 15 against West Virginia. Junior transfer Wyvetter Mayberry recorded 20 points, her single-game career high in points as Jayhawk, as well as a career-high four rebounds. The Hutchinson Quarterback Club Hall of Fame has been announced and it has a little something for most everybody.

The Class of 2023 has five individuals and one team to be inducted on Saturday, February 18 at halftime of the Hutchinson-Northwest Tech game at the Sports Arena.

The individual inductees are track and field athlete Skylar Arneson (2012-13), softball player Jessica Glenn (2008-09), football player Terrell Lane (2011-12), volleyball player Teresa Wade (2012-13) and baseball player Shawn Lewis (2009-10).

The 1994 NJCAA National Champion Blue Dragon men’s basketball team will also be inducted with the Class of 2023.

SKYLAR ARNESON (Track and Field - 2012-13)

A Nickerson High School graduate, Arneson was an NJCAA Hammer Throw National Champion in the 2013 NJCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championship at Gowans Stadium.

Arneson was a two-time first-team All-American with an outdoor shot put runner-up finish in 2012. Arneson was an eight-team NJCAA-American – four outdoor, four indoor.

He finished as second-team indoor All-American in the weight throw (3rd place in 2012; 4th place in 2013). He was third and eighth in the indoor shot put.

Outdoor, Arneson was first in the 2013 hammer throw, 2nd and 3rd in the shot put and eighth in the discus.

Arneson continues to be the Hutchinson CC record holder in the Hammer Throw at 198-8.

JESSICA GLENN (Softball - 2008-09)

Glenn was a freshman All-American outfielder in 2008, the program’s first All-American since 1992.

She will be the first Blue Dragon softball player enshrined into the Quarterback Club Hall of Fame.

A 5-foot-7 outfielder from Overland Park, Glenn had an exceptional freshman season for the Blue Dragons, helping the team win 40 games for the second time in program history. Glenn broke six single-season team records, including batting average (.453), total hits (96), runs scored (56) and total bases (119). She ranked in the top 6 of 14 different offensive single-season categories in 2008.

Glenn was named first-team All-Jayhawk East and second-team All-Region VI in her sophomore year of 2009. This is the second-straight year that Glenn earned postseason recognition.

Glenn finished the 2009 season second on the team in hitting at .377 with her first three career home runs and a team-high 42 RBIs. Glenn tied for the team lead in hits with 66 and was second in runs scored with 52. She led the team in stolen bases, going 18 for 19. Glenn had an on-base percentage of .412 and a team-high slugging percentage of .554.

Lane was huge for the Blue Dragons in his sophomore season and earned second-team NJCAA All-America honors as well as all-league and region first-team awards.

Lane not only broke one, but two major rushing record during his sophomore season, which he still holds today.

Lane had nine-straight 100-yard rushing games and three 200-yard rushing games. Lane broke HutchCC’s 46-year-old single-game rushing record of Mack Herron’s when he rushed for 308 yards on just 29 carries in a 63-49 victory over the Broncbusters. The game vaulted him into the national rushing lead for the remainder of the regular season.

Lane wound up second in the nation with a Blue Dragon single-season record 1,632 yards.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lane completed his Blue Dragon career as the fourth-leading rusher all-time with 2,093 yards. Lane scored 28 total touchdowns this season (15 rushing, 3 receiving) and scored 108 points, which ranks third best in single-season HCC history. For his career, Lane had 27 total touchdowns for 162 points, which also ranks third. Lane also caught 24 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns this season. He completed 4 of 6 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

As a punter, Lane averaged 41.2 yards per attempt on 33 punts with a career best of 62 yards.

If there was ever a case where a single Blue Dragon athlete put his team on his back and carried them in the postseason, it was Lewick.

The Andale High School left-handed pitcher was the staff ace of the 2010 Blue Dragon baseball team that won the Region VI Tournament and finished third in the NJCAA World Series.

In Hutchinson’s sub-regional game against Johnson County, Lewick got the with, throwing 147 pitches. He followed that up with 133 pitches in a win over Cowley in the Central District Winner’s Bracket final at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, a game the Blue Dragons ultimately won 4-3 in 13 innings.

Lewick was 8-2 in his sophomore season of 2010 with 95 strikeouts in 86.2 innings. He had two huge postseason wins in the sub-regional, one in the regional and one in the NJCAA World Series.

Lewick was an honorable mention All-American in 2010. Lewick had three shutouts as a sophomore, which ties for No. 1 in single-season history.

His 95 strikeouts in 2010 are second most still in team history. His 132 strikeouts are fifth in Blue Dragon career history.

TERESA WADE (Volleyball - 2012-13)

The St. John product was a two-time NJCAA second-team All-American and two-time Jayhawk West Most Valuable Player who led the Blue Dragon Volleyball team to back-to-back Jayhawk West and Region VI Championships in 2012 and 2013.

Wade is the only two-time conference Player of the Year in program history.

Wade remains second in career kills (896), sixth in kills per set (3.25) and 13th in career digs (749).

1994 BLUE DRAGON MEN’S BASKETBALL

After six long years, the NJCAA national championship trophy returned to Hutchinson in 1994.

Hutchinson Community College took the lead for good late in the first half and held off a frantic Three Rivers, Mo., comeback for a 78-74 victory in the 1994 NJCAA Tournament championship game at the Sports Arena.

Ben Davis had 20 points, including two decisive free throws with 4.1 seconds left, to lead the Blue Dragons, who finished the season with a 35-4 record, the second-most wins in school history.

Roy “Pooh” Hairston added 18 points, while John Sweet had 13 and Craig Duerksen had 12 points for Hutchinson.

Steve McClain, who won a national title as an assistant coach in 1988, had his own championship as a head coach and was named the Coach of the Tournament

Hairston was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He finished second in tournament scoring with 72 points. Hairston and Davis, who was ninth in scoring with 66 points, were named to the 12-member all-tournament team. Lucas Wagler earned the Charles Sesher Sportsmanship Award.

Hutchinson Quarterback Club Hall of Fame 2023 class announced

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Kansas City Royals&nbsp;announced today that&nbsp;Jake Eisenberg&nbsp;will join the Royals radio broadcast team for the 2023 season. He will primarily be heard on the Royals Radio Network with&nbsp;Denny Matthews&nbsp;and&nbsp;Steve Stewart&nbsp;and will also call play-by-play on Bally Sports Kansas City for select games when&nbsp;Ryan Lefebvre&nbsp;is on radio.

Eisenberg is taking on the role previously held by&nbsp;Steve Physioc, who is retiring after a broadcasting career that spanned more than 40 years.

“We are excited to welcome Jake to our broadcast team and help share the Royals’ story,” Royals Senior Vice President/COO&nbsp;Brooks Sherman&nbsp;said. “Our great fans will appreciate his passion for the game and knowledge of our players. We’re thankful for Phiz’s invaluable work with us the past 11 seasons and congratulate him on a terrific career spanning six decades.”

Eisenberg, 27, previously was the play-by-play broadcaster with Kansas City’s Triple-A affiliate, the Omaha Storm Chasers, from 2020-22. During the 2022 season, he also called two Royals games, including&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.’s&nbsp;first career home run and&nbsp;MJ Melendez’s&nbsp;Major League debut. Additionally, he worked approximately 40 games for the Mets on WCBS 880 in New York.

The 2022 season marked his fifth season broadcasting Minor League Baseball (not including the 2020 season), including stops at Double-A Richmond (Giants) in 2019, High-A Winston-Salem (White Sox) in 2018 and Short-Season Brooklyn (Mets) in 2017. He was also part of the radio broadcast team for the Eastern League All-Star Game in 2019.

“It’s an honor to be part of the broadcast team that shares the stories of this new, exciting era of Royals baseball while also getting to sit next to and learn from a Hall of Famer in Denny Matthews," Eisenberg said. "Being in Omaha the last couple of seasons was a great education on how special this organization is and how bright this team's future is. In addition to his work on the air in Minor League Baseball, Eisenberg has done play-by-play for the Big East Digital Network and Creighton Athletics and has called various events on ESPN+ and ACC Network Extra. He also worked as a college football and basketball studio host at Learfield IMG College in Winston-Salem, N.C.

A Port Washington, N.Y. native, Eisenberg began his broadcasting career at the University of Maryland, where he called a variety of Maryland events for the Big Ten Network+ and WMUC Sports – the student radio station – until he graduated in May 2017. In 2015, he helped create the Maryland Baseball Network, a multi-platform home for Maryland Baseball that features radio broadcasts of each game. His broadcast experience also includes one season as a broadcaster for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod League in 2016.

Physioc, 67, whose Major League broadcasting career began in 1983 with the Cincinnati Reds, has called Royals games on radio and television for the last 11 seasons. He previously worked for 14 seasons for the Los Angeles Angels from 1996-2009 on both television and radio. A graduate of Kansas State University, Physioc was the voice of the Wildcats football and basketball from 1979-83. During his broadcasting career, which spanned six decades, he also called games for the Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, Fresno State and Stanford University.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Kansas City Royals&nbsp;announced today that&nbsp;Jake Eisenberg&nbsp;will join the Royals radio broadcast team for the 2023 season. He will primarily be heard on the Royals Radio Network with&nbsp;Denny Matthews&nbsp;and&nbsp;Steve Stewart&nbsp;and will also call play-by-play on Bally Sports Kansas City for select games when&nbsp;Ryan Lefebvre&nbsp;is on radio.Eisenberg is taking on the role previously held by&nbsp;Steve Physioc, who is retiring after a broadcasting career that spanned more than 40 years.“We are excited to welcome Jake to our broadcast team and help share the Royals’ story,” Royals Senior Vice President/COO&nbsp;Brooks Sherman&nbsp;said. “Our great fans will appreciate his passion for the game and knowledge of our players. We’re thankful for Phiz’s invaluable work with us the past 11 seasons and congratulate him on a terrific career spanning six decades.”Eisenberg, 27, previously was the play-by-play broadcaster with Kansas City’s Triple-A affiliate, the Omaha Storm Chasers, from 2020-22. During the 2022 season, he also called two Royals games, including&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.’s&nbsp;first career home run and&nbsp;MJ Melendez’s&nbsp;Major League debut. Additionally, he worked approximately 40 games for the Mets on WCBS 880 in New York.The 2022 season marked his fifth season broadcasting Minor League Baseball (not including the 2020 season), including stops at Double-A Richmond (Giants) in 2019, High-A Winston-Salem (White Sox) in 2018 and Short-Season Brooklyn (Mets) in 2017. AUSTIN, Texas&nbsp;– The Kansas Jayhawks fell to No. 1 Texas 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24) on Wednesday evening at Gregory Gymnasium.

Kansas moved to 17-9 (7-7 Big 12) with the setback, while Texas improved to 20-1 (13-1 Big 12).

The Jayhawk offense was led by redshirt freshman Ayah Elnady and super-senior Anezka Szabo with 10 kills apiece. Elnady and sophomore Camryn Turner recorded one ace each.

Graduate transfer Lauren Dooley led the defense with three total blocks, followed by super-senior Rachel Langs and Turner with two blocks.

Texas began set one with a service error to give Kansas the lead 1-0. The Longhorns were able to come back 3-1 before Szabo had the Jayhawks first kill of the night.

Kansas came within one point after a kill by Elnady, 4-3. KU was able to go on a 2-0 scoring run, highlighted with a kill by Szabo to keep the score close, 8-7. A double block by Langs and Elnady tied up the score at 10 apiece.

The Jayhawks called for a timeout at 13-10 following back-to-back-to-back kills by Texas. The Longhorns were able to break away from Kansas and go on a 3-0 run of their own, making it 16-11. A service error brought the ball back to KU and made it 16-12.

UT was the first team to reach 20 following their third service error of the night, and led 20-13. Dooley and Elnady kept the kills coming for KU as the Jayhawks closed the gap to five at 20-15. A kill by Szabo was the final point Kansas would earn before Texas closed out set one 25-16.

Set two started with two kills in a row by Texas for an early 2-0 lead. &nbsp;A Longhorns service error put KU on the board, 2-1. Elnady was able to earn the first Kansas kill for set two, putting the Jayhawks within one, at 3-2. An intense rally ended with a point for KU recorded by Elnady, pushing the score to 4-3.

Texas went on multiple 2-0 scoring runs before KU called a timeout at 10-5. A double block by sophomore London Davis and Dooley kept Kansas in the game at 10-6. The Jayhawks would find their rhythm and go on a 3-0 run with back-to-back kills by Elnady and Szabo followed by a bad set by Texas.

Kansas put on a show in another big rally ending in a kill by Langs, with Texas leading 16-13. The Longhorns were able to record their fourth service ace of the match before Kansas called a timeout at 19-14. Szabo halted a Texas scoring run with a kill, putting Kansas within five at 20-15.

Elnady was able to push past the Longhorns defense, tallying another kill. Not too long after, Texas finished set two on top 25-18.

Szabo opened set three with a kill to put KU on top 1-0. A service error by the Jayhawks tied up the set at one, but Langs recorded a kill for herself to give the Jayhawks a 2-1 lead. A double block by Dooley and Turner allowed Kansas to keep the momentum going at 6-3.

Turner was the first Jayhawk to get a service ace and made sure to keep KU on top, 8-4, before Texas called for a timeout. A kill by sophomore Caroline Bien and an attack error by UT moved the Jayhawks to a 10-5 lead.

The drive did not stop for Kansas as Szabo and Bien had back-to-back kills to continue the lead 13-7. Texas made a comeback to get within two points, 14-12.

After the Longhorns tied the score at 14, a kill by Bien was challenged by Texas. In the end, the call stood, and Kansas led 15-14. The advantage was short lived as Texas was able to regain the set during a 9-2 run, making the score 18-16.

A 3-0 scoring run by the Jayhawks put Kansas within one, 23-22. Langs earned a kill along with a dual block with Turner. An ace by Elnady and an attack error from Texas put Kansas back on top, 24-23. After going into extra points, Texas shut down set three 26-24.

Kansas will host Iowa State for Senior Day on Saturday (November 19) at 11 a.m. CT in front of a sold out Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, marking the Jayhawks’ fifth consecutive sell out. Bean has thrown for at least 200 yards in five straight games with 14 TDs and four interceptions. Bean also has 222 yards and four TDs on the ground.

🏐 WSU VB: Wichita State Blocks Off Tulsa

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was missing his top three wide receivers in practice Wednesday because of injuries and illness, and the situation might not be a whole lot better when Kansas City visits the Chargers this weekend. JuJu Smith-Schuster remained in the concussion protocol after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jacksonville safety Andre Cisco in last Sunday’s win over the Jaguars. Mecole Hardman is out with an abdominal injury and Marquez Valdes-Scantling with an illness. That left Mahomes with backup Justin Watson, rookie Skyy Moore, newcomer Kadarius Toney and special teams standout Marcus Kemp to catch passes as the Chiefs prepared for their visit to Los Angeles on Sunday night.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams were back on the practice field as the Bolts ramped up preparations for Sunday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Allen and Williams participated in individual drills and could progress to team drills on Thursday. Allen has missed six games because of a hamstring injury while Williams has been out the past two after spraining his ankle in an Oct. 23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Deshaun Watson is practicing with the Cleveland Browns for the first time since his 11-game NFL suspension started in August. Watson was accused of sexual misconduct by more than two dozen women in Texas and reached a settlement with the league this summer. The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback returned to the field with his teammates on Wednesday. Despite temperatures hovering around freezing, Watson had on short sleeves during the portion of practice open to reporters. He fired passes to Cleveland’s wide receivers while periodically tucking his hands into a warmer around his waist. As long as he meets the league’s requirements, Watson can play on Dec. 4 when the Browns visit Houston, which drafted him in 2017.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Tyrese Hunter scored 26 points and a led a 3-point shooting spree for No. 11 Texas that carried the Longhorns to a 93-74 win over No. 2 Gonzaga. Last season’s Big 12 freshman of the year at Iowa State was 9-of-14 shooting and made five of Texas’ 13 3-pointers. Hunter made three from long range in the opening minutes of the second half as the Longhorns seized control and pushed their lead to 20 points. Gonzaga All-American forward Drew Timme scored 18 points but was mostly held in check when the game was still close.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston’s Justin Verlander in the American League and Miami’s Sandy Alcantara in the National League are both unanimous selections for the Cy Young Award. It’s the second time the winners in both leagues were unanimous since the award began in 1956. The 39-year-old Verlander won the award for the first time, having previously won in 2011 with Detroit and 2019 with Houston. He's the 11th player to win it three times. NEW YORK (AP) — A host of Hollywood and sports celebrities including Larry David and Tom Brady were named as defendants in a class-action lawsuit against cryptocurrency exchange FTX, arguing that their celebrity status made them culpable for promoting the firm’s failed business model. FTX has been in the public eye for more than a week, after the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange ended up with billions of dollars worth of losses and had to seek bankruptcy protection. The lawsuit names “Seinfeld” creator David, as well as star quarterback Brady, basketball players Shaquille O’Neal and Stephen Curry, and tennis star Naomi Osaka, among several others.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the first time this season, the Blue Dragons (7-0, 1-0) were held under 100 points.

The Dragons entered conference play against Independence (2-5, 0-1) averaging 121 points per game.

Hutchinson was without starter Ra'Sean Frederick (7.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg).

Indy took advantage of a starting lineup that was without its 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman guard with three players 6-foot-6 or taller.

The Pirates got an especially big day from Johan Nziemi, 34 points and nine rebounds. Nziemi and the Pirates pulled off highlight-reel dunk after highlight-reel dunk on their way to building a 15-point lead in the first five minutes.

Indy finished with 68 points in the paint.

The Dragons got another big day from Aaron Franklin, who finished with 36 points and 10 rebounds.

Franklin was one of four Dragons to reach double digits.

Kernan Bundy and Aaron Potter each added 13, while Jayden Garrison scored 11.

Potter's play off the bench helped spark some momentum in the first half after the Dragons fell behind. A Potter three with under a minute to go before the break pulled Hutchinson within 47-44.

The lead changed just once in the first half. Hutchinson scored within the first 39 seconds, then it was all Indy until Hutchinson inched within 49-46 at halftime.

The teams battled back and forth in the second half. The score was tied five times and the lead changed six times overall.

Much like the first half, Hutchinson used the waning moments of the second half to inch away. A Bundy three that banked off the window with 2:18 to play put Hutchinson up 95-90.

One minute later, Hutchinson forced Indy into its second 10-second backcourt violation of the game. The Pirates turned the ball over 24 times.

Hanging onto a 97-94 lead with less than 10 seconds to go, Hutchinson had to defend against not one, but two last-second three-point attempts that would have tied the game.

Two of Tavis Groomes three-point attempts on the night came within seconds of each other just before time expired. His first miss came back out to the corner on an offensive rebound, but his second attempt also failed to hit the mark.

Bundy was fouled on the rebound with 0.7 second left and hit both bonus free throws.

Independence failed to connect on a three-ball all night (0-10).

The Pirates still shot 51.5% overall to the Dragons 44.8%.

Hutchinson connected on 13 of 40 three-point attempts (32.5%).
