AP source: Durant reiterates desire to be traded by Brooklyn

Kevin Durant has again told Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai that he wants to be traded. He's reiterating a request he first made nearly six weeks ago. That's according to a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Monday night. That person says Durant also told Tsai that he has concerns about the Nets' direction under coach Steve Nash and general manager Sean Marks. The Athletic first reported the details of the latest meeting between Tsai and Durant. Tsai tweeted Monday night that he supports the team's front office and coaching staff.

PGA Tour says players knew consequences of joining LIV Golf

The PGA Tour is asking a federal judge not to allow three suspended players from LIV Golf to take part in the FedEx Cup playoffs, the tour's lucrative postseason. Talor Gooch, Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford are seeking a temporary restraining order in federal court in California. A hearing is set for Tuesday. The first FedEx Cup playoff event starts Thursday in Tennessee. The tour says in an opposition filing that the LIV players knew they were ineligible for the postseason two months ago and are just now filing for an emergency stay.

Serena Williams earns first win of season in Toronto

TORONTO (AP) — Serena Williams earned her first win in more than a year by beating Nuria Parrizas-Diaz 6-3, 6-4 at the women's National Bank Open. It's just the second tournament of the season for the 40-year-old Williams, who returned to competition at Wimbledon just over a month ago. The 23-time Grand Slam champion fell in the first round to Harmony Tan in three sets at the All England Club. Before then, she last competed at the 2021 Wimbledon tournament, where she retired in the middle of her first match due to a torn hamstring. It was Williams' first victory since the 2021 French Open.

NFL: Rodgers' use of ayahuasca didn't violate drug policy

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' use of the hallucinogenic drink ayahuasca during an offseason retreat isn't considered a violation of the NFL's drug policy. Rodgers discussed on "The Aubrey Marcus Podcast" last week how he went on an ayahuasca retreat to Peru in 2020. Ayahuasca is defined as a psychoactive beverage native to South America and is often used for religious, ritualistic or medicinal purposes. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy says it wouldn't have triggered a positive test result on either the substance abuse or performance-enhancing substance policies collectively bargained by the NFL and its players' association.

Judge hits No. 44, Yankees beat Mariners 9-4 to stop skid

SEATTLE (AP) — Aaron Judge hit his 44th homer, Josh Donaldson went deep and drove in three runs, and the New York Yankees snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Seattle Mariners 9-4. Donaldson doubled twice and Andrew Benintendi also had two doubles and three RBIs. But it wasn't a perfect night for New York because Matt Carpenter broke his left foot when he fouled off a pitch in the first inning. He hopes to return in September. Orioles hit 4 homers in 7-4 victory over Blue Jays

BALTIMORE (AP) — Ramón Urías hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and Anthony Santander, Ryan Mountcastle and Austin Hays also went deep to lift the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Orioles entered the day two games behind Seattle and Tampa Bay for the final two wild cards in the American League. They pulled within three of Toronto for the first wild card. This was the first of 15 meetings down the stretch between the Blue Jays and Orioles.

BEIJING (AP) — Cycling is growing in popularity in China as a sport, not just a way to get to work. A coronavirus outbreak that shut down indoor sports facilities in Beijing earlier this year encouraged people to try outdoor sports including cycling. Organized rides in the Chinese capital take cyclists to outlying suburbs or city landmarks. Bicycles once outnumbered cars on China's city streets. Now cycling is increasingly seen as a sport by a newly affluent urban middle class. The sport's rising popularity has boosted sales of bicycles and signals growing public awareness of environmental protection and low-carbon lifestyles. At least 20 million people are participating in the sport nationwide.

Oklahoma's Gundy out after saying 'racially charged' word

A day after Oklahoma assistant head football coach Cale Gundy announced his resignation, the school said Gundy uttered what it called a racially charged word multiple times during a film session last week. Gundy had been with the program as an assistant since 1999. He announced his resignation Sunday in a social media post, and the school confirmed it with a statement shortly thereafter. Oklahoma sent out another statement on Monday giving more details about the incident.

Russian tennis players collect 3 titles at US Open tuneups

WASHINGTON (AP) — It's been quite a week for Russia's professional tennis players. There were four WTA and ATP tournaments — and Russians earned three of those titles. One of them, Liudmila Samsonova, thinks it might not be merely a coincidence that this recent run of success for her, Daria Kasatkina and Daniil Medvedev comes shortly after they were banned from competing at Wimbledon because of their country's invasion of, and ongoing war in, Ukraine. Samsonova beat Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the Citi Open in Washington on Sunday. That came a day after Medvedev won the championship at Los Cabos, Mexico, and several hours before Kasatkina won a title in California. All three are hard-court tuneups for the U.S. Open.

Sports Headlines for Tuesday

Monday was one of the more lowkey training camp practices the Kansas City Chiefs have had so far.

With overcast conditions, temperatures in the low 70s and a smaller-than-normal crowd, the Chiefs practiced for a swift 75 minutes Monday, working out in half-pads and completing a 10-10-10 practice.

A 10-10-10 means 10 offensive plays, 10 defensive plays and 10 minutes of special teams play. That process was repeated twice during Monday's workout.

With the starting offense going against the second-team defense, and the starting defense going against the third-team offense, there's not a lot to ream from practices like these.

One thing is clear, however. With eleven practices down, more difficult roster decisions are coming, as the Chiefs try and find the right combination for their 53-man roster this season.

One area where that could be especially difficult is wide receiver. Juju Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Mecole Hardman and Skyy Moore seem perfectly safe. But those behind them, guys like Josh Gordon, Daurice Fountain, Justin Watson, Corey Coleman, Cornell Powell, Omar Bayless.

All capable receivers, but not adequate room for all of them. Be that as it may, coach Andy Reid has liked the competition at that spot.

"It's good," he said. "(General manager Brett Veach) has brought in great people. He's brought in good players that are going to compete. Somewhere, we're going to have to let good players go, but it's a tribute to Brett and the job he's done."

One receiver who could be on the outside looking in is Gordon, which is probably not expected for someone who was drafted 10 years ago and is entering his sixth season in the NFL.

After a bit of a slow start to training camp, Reid has noticed a greater sense of urgency from Gordon.

"He's had really good days the last few days," Reid noted. "I appreciate his effort and he's kind of the senior citizen of that group. He's the older receiver in that mix and has had success in this league."

Gordon has mostly worked with the second-team offense this camp, but he's had a handful of reps with Patrick Mahomes and the first-teamers, especially in the last few days.

After Monday's practice, Gordon was asked how confident he is in making the 53-man roster.

"I just want to go out and get the opportunities I get and give it 110%," Gordon said. "Let the cards fall where they may and see what happens, but I don't have an answer for that to be honest. I don't. I wasn't a starter last year, so I'm fighting for a spot like everybody else."

Gordon was signed by the Chiefs last September and elevated to the active roster in October. He played in 12 games last season, making just five receptions for 32 yards, but he scored his first touchdown since 2019 on a one-yard reception in the Las Vegas game in December.

Gordon has faced six total suspensions related to the NFL's substance abuse policies. The Chiefs are the fourth NFL team he's played for. Gordon led the NFL in receiving yards in 2013 and was named a first-team All-Pro.

The Chiefs bring back their entire starting offensive line from last season after making major changes in that group following the Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay.

On the defensive front, Kansas City is revamped. The Chiefs had just 31 sacks in 2021, which ranked 29th in the league. Seventh-year pro and defensive tackle Chris Jones feels confident about his group’s progression since the end of last season.

"I think we left a lot of opportunities last year and in our last game of the season on the field," Jones remarked. "We were able to make a few changes in the defensive line room with a lot of familiar faces back. This year, I think it's about being gritty. Stopping the run, stopping the pass and doing whatever we can to help this defense out."

The Chiefs signed defensive ends Carlos Dunlap and Matt Dickerson during camp to provide depth. Rookie and first-round pick George Karlaftis also adds an additional pass rusher to the defensive line.

Frank Clark and Mike Danna also add experience at defensive end, while Derrick Nnadi is a fifth-year pro at defensive tackle. Tackles Tershawn Wharton and Khalen Saunders have also gotten solid reps on the interior of the line.

Starting center Creed Humphrey has taken notice of the solid competition up front.

"It's been very competitive these last couple of weeks," he said. "We've had some really humid, hot days. Everybody has been pretty moist out there. Just getting after it though and competing every play. So, it's been really good. You kind of see the mental toughness we have in the group and what the defensive line has in their group."

As many have probably seen by now, former Chiefs coach and longtime NFL head man Dick Vermeil was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio this past Saturday.

He and Andy Reid have quite a bit in common. Namely, they have both coached the Eagles and Chiefs. Vermeil coached the Eagles from 1976-1982, the Rams from '97-'99 and then the Chiefs from 2001-2005.

Reid says Vermeil talked to him extensively, once Reid took over the Eagles in 1999 and again in 2013 when he got the Chiefs job.

Reid says he and Vermeil talk a lot more often than that, about once a week. Reid made the trip down to Canton with his wife, Tammy, to honor a longtime friend and mentor.

"He talked to me about the atmosphere (in Kansas City) and...he coached me up on it," Reid said. "That's priceless. I mean, that's priceless. And he checks in all of the time."

Receiver Daurice Fountain didn't work Monday due to a groin strain. Still no Jody Forston, as he's "making progress" with a strained quad injury. Corner Rashad Fenton (shoulder) and offensive lineman Lucas Niang (knee) remain on the injured list. Defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (knee bruise) is also still out.

The Chiefs signed defensive end Matt Dickerson Monday and released Shilique Calhoun to make room on the 90-man roster. On Saturday, the Chiefs signed receiver Devin Gray and released corner Deandre Baker.

Gray was getting his first reps in with the team Monday. Dickerson was seen Monday morning as well, wearing jersey No. 96.

The Chiefs have camp again on Tuesday and will rest Wednesday. They'll work Thursday and then travel Friday, heading to Chicago for their first preseason game against the Bears Saturday.

Kim arrives on PGA Tour with 61 to win Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Joohyung Kim is the second-youngest PGA Tour winner since World War II. The 20-year-old South Korean who goes by "Tom" made a name for himself at the Wyndham Championship. Kim shot 61 and captured his first PGA Tour title by five shots. That makes him an instant PGA Tour member and now he's eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs that start next week. Rickie Fowler missed the cut but still managed to finish No. 125 in the FedEx Cup to advance. Justin Lower missed his card by three-putting for bogey from long range on the final hole.

Jays top Twins on overturned call in 10th; Baldelli ejected

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Cavan Biggio hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and Whit Merrifield scored on an overturned call to lead the Blue Jays to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins and split the four-game series. Merrifield was originally called out at the plate trying to score the game-winning run, but the call was reversed after Twins catcher Gary Sanchez was deemed to have interfered with Merrifield. Merrifield's right foot collided with Sanchez's left leg as he slid into home plate. The out would have ended the inning. Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli was ejected for arguing the call. Toronto remained two games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top wild card in the American League. Minnesota's lead in the AL Central shrank to one game after a win by Cleveland.

Dominant deGrom pitches surging Mets to 5-2 win over Braves

NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom struck out 12 and carried a perfect game into the sixth inning of his second start all season, pitching the New York Mets past the Atlanta Braves 5-2 for their 12th victory in 14 games. Pete Alonso drove in two runs and the first-place Mets finished with 19 strikeouts — including three straight from closer Edwin Díaz to end a combined two-hitter. LONDON (AP) — Former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs is set to go on trial on charges of assault and use of coercive behavior against a former girlfriend. Giggs, 48, is accused of assaulting Kate Greville, 36, causing her actual bodily harm, on Nov. 1, 2020, at his home in Worsley, greater Manchester. He is also charged with common assault of her younger sister, Emma Greville, during the same incident. Giggs is also charged with using controlling and coercive behavior against his former girlfriend between August 2017 and November 2020. His trial in Manchester that starts Monday is expected to last up to 10 days.

Rose dismisses sexual misconduct questions at Phillies fete

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pete Rose dismissed questions about his first appearance on the field in Philadelphia since the franchise scrapped 2017 plans to honor him because of a woman's claim she had a sexual relationship with baseball's hit king when she was a minor. Rose told a female baseball writer "it was 55 years ago, babe." The 81-year-old Rose received a standing ovation from Phillies fans when he walked onto the Citizens Bank Park field for the first time since he received a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball in August 1989. He was honored along with other members of the 1980 World Series champion Phillies team. The original anniversary celebration was postponed for two seasons because of the coronavirus pandemic.

🎙 Eagle Radio Sports for Monday Morning

The Kansas Chiefs were back at training camp practice on a warm, muggy Sunday morning, and it was somewhat forgettable day for the offense.

Whether it was misconnections on deep passes early or three consecutive false starts during team drills, it wasn’t the best of days offensively.

Yet, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was not discouraged and believed his players learned a lesson from it.

"I think today was a good learning lesson," Bieniemy said. "It was an outstanding practice. The defense did a heck of a job. The beauty of it is, it's training camp. You live and learn each and every day and there's a lesson you can gain from this."

The offense did eventually wake up in the latter half of Sunday's workout, particularly Mecole Hardman, who caught a couple of contested deep balls in seven-on-seven.

Daurice Fountain was also productive, as he was back on the field after hurting his finger Saturday. He seemed to have caught everything thrown his way.

On the offensive line, the Chiefs worked Geron Christian in at right tackle with the first-team offense. Up until now, it had been Andrew Wyline manning that spot, but Wylie worked with the second-team.

Bieniemy didn't elaborate too much on this change. Other than to say - execution is the main thing he and the coaching staff are looking for at every position.

"The thing I'm looking for is, when we're out there, are we all being accountable to one another," Bieniemy said. "Are we executing with great attention to details. Are we having a sense of urgency and sense of purpose in what we're doing?"

One player that continues to have a sense of purpose is rookie running back Isiah Pacheco, who's really making a strong case to be the No. 2 back behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Reid remarked Saturday that Pacheco "runs hard every time he touches the ball." Bieniemy is also impressed with the seventh-round pick out of Rutgers, but was complimentary of all the running backs.

"He's a tough kid," he said of Pacheco. "Obviously, we have a lot of good players in that room. In time, everything will tell for itself. Right now, (Pacheco) is doing some good things. He's working his tail off, but you have a lot of other guys in there competing their tails off as well."

Some good news - no new injuries Sunday. Still no Jody Forston as he deals with a strained quad. He's been out for just over a week. Receiver Gary Jennings (concussion) and Taylor Stallworth (knee bruise) also didn’t practice.

Lucas Niang (knee) and Rashad Fenton (shoulder) remain on the injured list.

He still hasn't gotten reps with the first-team defense, but the 13-year veteran is looking strong, as Dunlap at times dominated the second-team offensive line during team drills Sunday.

Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, who has been working with the first-team D-line on the interior, says he used to train with Dunlap a few years ago. He's not surprised Dunlap has caught on so quickly.

"Since (Dunlap) has been here, he's been doing his part," Nnadi said. "He'll try and throw any bit of nuggets to anybody on the D-line. So, yes. He does bring a lot of good leadership to the D-line."

It’s officially game week, as the Chiefs can now look toward that first preseason game at Chicago this Saturday.

It is just preseason, but it’s a chance for the Chiefs to go against somebody in a different jersey.

Second-year linebacker and starter Nick Bolton probably won’t play a ton of snaps, but he just wants the defense to give it their all once the game starts.

"Whatever we have in, just executing it to the highest level we can," Bolton said. "Going down there and stopping the run early. Also just playing the pass game along with that. I just want to go in, execute at the highest level and build from the ground up."

Nnadi added the biggest key to preseason, especially for younger players, is to not overthink too much and stick to what you've learned.

"It's preseason," he said. "Just play. Do what you've been coached to do. If there's anything the coaches want you to improve on, that's a good chance to do it after (the game). Go watch the film, corrections and that's how it goes. Just trust yourself. Don't overthink it and just play."

Saturday’s game at Chicago kicks off at noon central. It’ll be carried live on Q Country 92.7 FM and KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) in St. Joseph.

The Chiefs have practice on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week.

🏈 A rocky day for the offense at Chiefs training camp Sunday

San Antonio,&nbsp;TX-&nbsp;The Wind Surge defeated the San Antonio Missions 2-1 in extra innings on Sunday night as the Surge won their fourth straight and took four out of six in San Antonio.

The Missions tied the game in the bottom of the ninth behind an RBI pinch-hit single from Kelvin Melean to make it a 1-1 ballgame.

Jair Camargo responded in the top of the tenth inning with the game-winning single to right field to score Leobaldo Cabrera and give the Surge a 2-1 lead.

Casey Legumina made his 13th start on the hill for the Surge and allowed zero runs on two hits and tallied three strikeouts in four innings pitched before being relieved by Alex Phillips in the fifth inning.

Nolan Watson got the nod on the mound for San Antonio and pitched five scoreless innings and recorded five strikeouts and allowed four hits.

Edouard Julien singled to center field in the top of the seventh inning and allowed Anthony Prato to score and give Wichita a 1-0 lead. Julien finished two for five with an RBI in the finale.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — MJ Melendez hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and had a career-high six RBI to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 13-5 on Sunday.

The rookie Melendez blasted it an estimated 406-feet to right field which bounced into the fountains to give the Royals a 5-0 lead.

Melendez is putting together quite the campaign after being called up on May 3. He’s hit 13 home runs on the year and has back-to-back homer games four times this season. Among rookies, he’s hit the fifth most home runs this season and is just two behind teammate Bobby Witt Jr.

The 7-8-9 hitters of Michael Massey, Nate Eaton and Kyle Isbel provided most of the production as they went a combined 6-for-9 with nine runs scored and five RBI. All 13 RBI came from rookies.

Brad Keller (6-12) had his 11th quality start of the season, going six innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking three and fanning four.

Royals win Sunday over Boston

San Antonio, TX- The Wind Surge defeated the San Antonio Missions 5-1 on Saturday night as Wichita scored three runs in the first inning to coast to their third straight win and remain in first place.

The Surge struck first as they scored three runs in the first inning from back-to-back RBI doubles from Chris Williams and Andrew Bechtold to give Wichita a 3-0 lead.

Leobaldo Cabrera finished three for four in the game and hit an RBI double in the top of the third inning to score Ernie Yake and extend the Surge lead to 4-0.

Jack Stronach got the Missions on the board in the fourth inning as he singled to center field to score a run and cut the deficit to 4-1. Stronach finished one for four with an RBI in the game.

Mitch Holthus is entering his 29th year as radio voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.

He's experienced the highs and lows of the modern era in Chiefs football. He went to training camp for 16 years in River Falls, Wisconsin, the one training camp in Kansas City in 2020 and now for the 12th time, he's watching the team come into form on the Mosaic Training Fields at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

"Every year seems like the first year," Holthus told KFEQ Radio. "I know that sounds trite or corny, but truthfully, it's that feeling. I feel like I'm a rookie every year. That's what I tell the team. Your stomach churns, you get nervous and every day is just awesome."

Holthus has had a front row seat to what's surely been the best 10-year stretch in franchise history. Six straight AFC West championships. Nine straight winning seasons. Eight playoff berths since 2013. Four straight AFC Championship games at Arrowhead Stadium. The first Super Bowl win 50 years. The list goes on.

Yet, heading into 2022, despite all of this recent success and a star-studded roster, Holthus believes this team has something to prove, even though they've proven themselves time and again.

"This is a team that has very unique focus," he said. "They're hyperfocused, starting with their biggest stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Truthfully, there's a chip on these guys' shoulder."

The 2021 season left a sour taste. Whether it was the 3-4 start, or blowing a 21-3 lead to Cincinnati in the AFC title game. The Tyreek Hill trade in March gave doubters some fuel as well. Holthus believes all of those factors combined gave this team a unique swagger in the offseason.

"They've come in here a little ticked off," he noted.&nbsp; "I saw it in minicamp, I saw it in OTAs and I've seen it so far here in St. Joe."

Hill is a franchise changing player, but the Chiefs picked up veteran receivers Juju Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency. Plus, rookie receiver Skyy Moore has been a breakout star in camp. As has rookie running back Isiah Pacheco.

You also look at running back Ronald Jones and safety Justin Reid - two veterans picked up in free agency that could have a big impact on how the Chiefs do.

"To add that with what's already here and the new rookies...somebody pick them fourth in the division, but do so at your own peril."

This marks the last year that Chiefs training camp is required to be in St. Joseph, according to the current agreement. There are two more optional years after this, but Missouri Western and Chiefs leadership will evaluate the contract once camp is over.

With only about six or seven teams left in the NFL that stil travel outside of their home city for camp, Holthus is hopeful the Chiefs will keep coming back to Missouri Western.

"They've been phenomenal," Holthus said of the University. "Mosaic (Life Care) has been phenomenal. The merchants, people like HyVee, have been phenomenal. It's a great camp. People say you're going away for camp. We're only going 50 minutes away. It's not like we're in Wisconsin."

He went to training camp for 16 years in River Falls, Wisconsin, the one training camp in Kansas City in 2020 and now for the 12th time, he's watching the team come into form on the Mosaic Training Fields at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph."Every year seems like the first year," Holthus told KFEQ Radio. "I know that sounds trite or corny, but truthfully, it's that feeling. I feel like I'm a rookie every year. That's what I tell the team. Your stomach churns, you get nervous and every day is just awesome."Holthus has had a front row seat to what's surely been the best 10-year stretch in franchise history. I don't think it's a coincidence that the most successful nine years in Chiefs history, a lot of it is Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, but this is where those seasons begin - right here on this campus and right here in this city."As for a season prediction? Holthus doesn't put out a specific number of wins and losses. Though, he's confident a Super Bowl contender is being molded yet again. Even if others on the outside don't feel that way anymore."This is a refocused, recharged, rebooted team," he said. "There's a lot of talent and the coaching is superb. It's crazy that a team that is this successful is actually, in a way, going to sneak up on people. But, that's the way I feel."
