He's one of those guys that can score the basketball. He finishes well around the basket. He's got a big, strong body. He can shoot the three-ball, and he plays with a lot of confidence. I know he's excited to be back on the floor and we've got to do a good job against him. He's one of the best players in college basketball." … Facing a big K-State front line after several games against smaller lineups: "We play the guys that we think can help us win every game. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)&nbsp;— Kevin McCullar Jr. returned from an injury to score 17 points and grab 10 rebounds, Jalen Wilson added 15 points and 13 boards, and ninth-ranked Kansas rolled to a 91-65 victory over Seton Hall on Thursday night in the Big East-Big 12 Battle at Allen Fieldhouse.

KJ Adams had 11 points, DaJuan Harris Jr. had 10 with seven assists and Ernest Udeh Jr. also scored 10 for the Jayhawks (8-1), who now have more than a week off before visiting bitter rival Missouri for the first time in a decade next Saturday.

The Jayhawks romped past the Tigers 102-65 last year, when they resumed their series after a nine-year hiatus following Missouri’s departure for the SEC. Kansas has not faced them on the road since losing on Feb. 4, 2012.

“There’s no reason we shouldn’t be rested before we play Mizzou,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said, “and there’s some things we definitely need to work on. Hopefully we’ll be better equipped when we go over there.”

Kadary Richmond had 17 points, but also turned the ball over seven times for the Pirates (4-4), who were just 4 of 19 from the 3-point arc in losing their third straight game. Tyrese Samuel added with 16 points.

The teams were meeting for just the third time and first since 2018, when the Jayhawks edged Seton Hall in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They went on to play for the national championship this year.

Now the defending champs, Kansas built a big first-half lead against the Pirates on Thursday night. But rather than going on one of their familiar runs to take control of the game, the Jayhawks methodically extended their advantage over the first 20 minutes, taking advantage of their speed on the perimeter to get easy baskets at the rim.

Meanwhile, Seton Hall couldn’t make a shot.

The Pirates missed their first eight from beyond the arc, went 19 of 32 from the foul line and rarely got anything to go that wasn’t at the basket. And that made digging out of their halftime hole seemingly impossible.

By the time KC Ndefo curled in their first 3, the Jayhawks had extended their lead to 50-31 with 14 1/2 minutes to go.

The poor shooting, coupled with turnover problems, proved too much for Seton Hall to overcome.

Kansas had 15 steals in the win, which is the most by the Jayhawks since Nov. 11, 2011 when the team also had 15 steals against Towson. The Jayhawks also finished with six players in double figures for the first time since 2019 against Towson.

Seton Hall was similarly poor from beyond the arc in losses to Iowa, Oklahoma and Siena, when the Pirates were 1 of 9 from the 3-point line in a 65-60 defeat their last time out. They were 20 of 32 from the foul line in that game.

Kansas forced the Pirates into 16 turnovers while committing 11 of their own, and they had a big edge on the boards, which meant the Jayhawks simply had more opportunities on the offensive end. They took advantage of them, too.

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;Kansas Volleyball won its first-round match in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season as the Jayhawks defeated Miami 3-0 on Thursday at the Devaney Center.

Set scores for the match were 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 in favor of the Jayhawks, who improved to 19-10 on the year. Kansas advances to the second round to face Nebraska on Friday at 7 p.m. CT in Lincoln.

"We were really good in all phases tonight. I thought we served well and passed well, and I’m real happy with the way we played. We’re excited this time of year to keep playing and see what tomorrow brings."

On the strength of 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, the Jayhawks won the first set 25-17. Caroline Bien had four kills, while Rachel Langs, Anezka Szabo and Ayah Elnady had three apiece and one combined attack error as the Jayhawks pulled ahead after being tied nine times, the last at 13-all. KU scored the last four points of the set, finishing things off with two blocks, first a combo from Langs and Elnady before Langs got set point with a solo block.

Momentum carried over for Kansas in the second set as the Jayhawks scored the first four points, built an 8-1 lead and never looked back as they won the set, 25-18. KU again hit the ball well with 13 kills against four errors and got four service aces, including a pair from Elnady for the first two points of the set.

The Jayhawks played from behind early in the third set as Miami scored the first two points and led by as many as three at 5-2 in the early going. KU scored four straight points to take the first lead of the set at 6-5 and following a 6-all tie, the Jayhawks took a lead they would not relinquish. Miami would stay within two points up until 18-16, but Kansas scored seven of the final 11 points – including three blocks – and put the match away at 25-20 on a kill by Elnady.

Bien led the Jayhawks with 12 kills and six digs, while Elnady had nine kills, seven digs and three service aces. Langs hit a team-high .438 with eight kills and 10 blocks, helping KU to a 13-7 advantage in blocks. Camryn Turner had 30 assists and seven digs to go along with four kills and Kennedy Farris led the Jayhawks with 11 digs.

As a team, Kansas hit .278 for the match with 40 kills and committed just 10 attack errors. The Jayhawks also had the advantage in service aces, 8-3, while Miami edged KU in digs, 41-39. KU’s defense held Miami to a .113 attack percentage, which included the Hurricanes hitting less than .100 in each of the first two sets.

With the win, the Jayhawks improve to 8-3 all-time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Bechard and the Jayhawks are now 12-10 all-time in the postseason, with a chance to improve that Friday night.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The 18-10 (8-8 Big 12) Kansas Jayhawks will take on the 19-10 (12-6 ACC) Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes in Lincoln, Nebraska for the 2022 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament First Round. First serve will take place at 4:30 p.m. CT at the Devaney Center on Thursday, December 1.

Redshirt freshman Ayah Elnady had a stellar season at the service line, breaking two school records. On September 17 against Omaha, Elnady recorded eight service aces, the most aces in a four-set match for the Jayhawks. Less than a month later on October 15 against Texas Tech, Elnady set the school record for aces in a five-set match with seven aces. The Cairo, Egypt native played in 100 sets, tallied 283 kills, along with 38 aces, 172 digs, 41 blocks and 18 digs during the 2022 campaign. Elnady earned a season-high 19 kills versus Iowa State on November 19, hitting .241.

After joining the Jayhawks in 2018, super-senior Rachel Langs has made a name for herself at Kansas. On November 5, Langs recorded her 500th career block against No. 11 Baylor in Waco, Texas, becoming one of five individuals to reach such a milestone at KU. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Eddie Lampkin scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds TCU pulled away from Providence for a 75-62 win in the Big East-Big 12 Battle. The Horned Frogs put six players in double figures, including Damion Baugh, who made his season debut with 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Baugh had to serve a six-game suspension for signing with an NBA certified agent after last season. Bryce Hopkins and Devin Carter both scored 17 points for the Friars.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes showed up bright-eyed and energetic for practice on Wednesday, two days after his wife Brittany gave birth to the couple's second child. Patrick “Bronze” Mahomes III arrived on Monday, giving 1-year-old Sterling a big brother. Mahomes said the new baby won't affect his preparation for one of the most important games on the Chiefs' remaining schedule. They head to Cincinnati on Sunday for a rematch of the AFC title game, when the Chiefs built a 21-3 lead and still led 21-10 at halftime before watching the Bengals rally for a 27-24 victory.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has moved the Dec. 11 game between the Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers to “Sunday Night Football.” The game will kick off at 8:20 p.m. EST on NBC, with the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos moving to 4:05 p.m. EST on CBS. It will be the second meeting between quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert, who were both drafted in 2020.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU’s Kendre Miller and Kansas State’s 5-foot-6 dynamo Deuce Vaughn have much different body types. But the third-year running backs that will be featured in the Big 12 championship game Saturday look pretty similar in what they do on the field. Like Vaughn, the 6-foot, 220-pound Miller can be shifty, elusive and quick. Vaughn can also be hard to tackle and doesn’t shy from contact even though he is nearly 50 pounds lighter. Vaughn has 1,295 yards rushing. Miller has rushed for 1,260 yards and 16 touchdowns, running for a score in every game this season for third-ranked TCU.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — TCU quarterback Max Duggan has been named the Big 12′s offensive player of the year by the league’s coaches. Kansas State end Felix Anudike-Uzomah is the top defensive player. Those players will face each other Saturday when the third-ranked and 12-0 Horned Frogs play No. 13 Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game. Sonny Dykes was selected coach of the year by his peers after TCU became the first Big 12 team since Texas in 2009 to finish a regular season undefeated. His dad, the late Spike Dykes, won the award with Texas Tech in 1996.

UNDATED (AP) — Rose Bowl game organizers have cleared the way for the College Football Playoff to expand to 12 teams starting in the 2024 season. They've told CFP officials they are willing to alter agreements for the first two years of the larger playoff. A person with knowledge of the discussions between game organizers and CFP officials told The Associated Press that the Rose Bowl is prepared to be flexible and wants to continue to be part of the College Football Playoff beyond 2025. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the presidents and chancellors who oversee the playoff still needed to give final approval on expansion plans.

UNDATED (AP) — West Virginia is giving football coach Neal Brown another chance. The school said Wednesday that Brown will keep his job, for now, although no specific timetable was set. The Mountaineers won two of their final three games to finish 5-7 season, the second time they failed to become bowl eligible under the fourth-year coach. The decision was announced hours after West Virginia named North Texas athletic director Wren Baker to the same position with the Mountaineers. He replaces Shane Lyons, who was fired earlier this month. Baker was given a six-year contract that will pay him $1.1 million annually, plus incentives. Baker will start on Dec. 19.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Manny Bates had 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks and Butler handed Kansas State its first loss, 76-64, on Wednesday night in the Big East-Big 12 Battle.

Butler used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to build a 25-12 lead and the Bulldogs led 37-25 at the break. Chuck Harris sank an open 3-pointer in the corner during Butler's 13-0 run and Bates added a fast-break dunk as Butler took a 20-point lead at 65-45.

Desi Sills, who was scoreless in the first half, brought Kansas State back within 68-60 with 4:08 remaining after he scored 13 points, including nine straight, during a 15-3 run. But Bates ended the run to put Butler ahead by double digits for good.

Harris finished with 15 points, Eric Hunter Jr. had 13, Jayden Taylor 12 and Simas Lukosius 11 for Butler (5-3). Bates made his first eight shots before missing a short jumper in the lane with 7:18 remaining in the game.

Keyontae Johnson, two years after the scary incident in Florida where he collapsed mid-game, had 20 points, on 9-of-9 shooting, and 12 rebounds for Kansas State (6-1). Sills finished with 17 points and Markquis Nowell had 13. The Wildcats return home to face Wichita State on Saturday.

🏀 Butler hands K-State 1st loss behind Bates's double-double

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) —Longtime NFL quarterback John Hadl, who starred for his hometown Kansas Jayhawks before embarking on a professional career that included six Pro Bowl appearances and an All-Pro nod, died Wednesday. He was 82.

The university, where Hadl returned after his playing days as a coach and fundraiser, announced his death in a statement, citing his family. No cause was given.

"John Hadl had a generational impact on Kansas football," Jayhawks athletic director Travis Goff said. "He was a once-in-a-lifetime Jayhawk student-athlete, a coach and mentor, a prolific fundraiser who developed profound relationships with countless, and the ultimate ambassador for KU. In short, our university and athletic program has been transformed by John and his legacy will forever be cemented. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with [wife] Diana and the Hadl family."

Hadl was a two-sport star at Lawrence High School, a short drive from the Kansas campus, but made his name on the football field for the Jayhawks. He led the NCAA in punting as a sophomore, set a record for longest punt of 94 yards that still stands, and until 2007, held the record for longest interception return with a 98-yarder.

Hadl played both halfback and quarterback his final two seasons, helping Kansas go 14-5-2 over the span. The two-time All-American finished his career by leading the Jayhawks to their first bowl win against Rice in the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl.

"Upon my arrival," current Kansas coach Lance Leipold said, "I heard instantly from people across the state about John's impact to this department, not just as a student-athlete and coach, but as someone who dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to the University of Kansas. His desire to enhance KU and make it as special as possible truly resonated with me."

Hadl was chosen 10th overall by the Detroit Lions in 1962 in the NFL draft and 24th overall by the San Diego Chargers in the AFL draft, where he chose to pursue his career. Hadl would spend 11 seasons with the Chargers, taking them to three AFL title games before the merger with the NFL, before finishing his career with the Packers, Rams and Oilers.

After retiring in 1977, Hadl returned to Kansas as an assistant, helping the Jayhawks to the 1981 Hall of Fame Bowl. He later coached for the Rams, the Broncos and the Los Angeles Express of the USFL before returning to Kansas in 1988, where he spent the next 30 years as a prolific fundraiser for the Williams Education Fund.

Hadl's No. 21 is one of three numbers retired by Kansas along with No. 48 of Gale Sayers and No. 42 of Ray Evans. In 2020, the school celebrated his legacy by unveiling a statue of Hadl outside the Anderson Family Football Complex.

"To be the head coach of this program," Leipold said, "and see his statue every day outside Anderson Family Football Complex is a firm reminder of the passion and love that John had for this program. Kelly and I send our condolences to the Hadl family and his loved ones."

Wichita State (6-1) matches its best seven-game start in school history, which happened just last season. McCarty was perfect from the field, going 8-for-8 and a team-high 19 points. She added five assists and two steals to her stellar night.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/nhug-bosch-duran/7153">Nhug Bosch Duran</a>&nbsp;recorded her second straight game in double figures with 10 points. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jane-asinde/7152">Jane Asinde</a>&nbsp;failed to reach double figures for the first time this season, and was held scoreless, but grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/trajata-colbert/7155">Trajata Colbert</a>&nbsp;just missed a double-double with eight points and 11 boards. ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Hutchinson (8-3, 2-3) fell out of the rankings this week after two losses in a three-game span.

In both losses, Hutchinson scored just 75 points.

That tally might be strong for a half-court offense and a game played to value each and every possession. However, fans have come to love the controlled chaos head coach Tommy DeSalme brought to Dragon Nation last year, which features a high volume of shots, full-court pressure and stoppages for the ball sailing out of bounds.

That high-flying offense scored the second-most points in a single game (139) against Labette in the Sports Arena just four games into the season.

The road conference competition has not been kind to the Dragons, ranked as high as No. 4 in the second week of the poll.

Hutchinson lost Wednesday at Cowley (7-3, 2-3) despite putting up 80 shots (43.8%).

Cowley took a mere four-point lead into the halftime break, but — once again — Hutchinson came out flat in the second half.

In the second frame, the Dragons were outscored 53-41.

Aaron Franklin scored 29 points, but he also played 10 more minutes (35 total) than coach DeSalme would like in the up-and-down chaotic pace.

Ty Frierson put up 23 points in 24 minutes.

The Dragons live and die by the three. Hutchinson made just 8 of 33 treys (24.2%) while Cowley drained 9 of 19 attempts (47.4%).

Only 16 points came from the Dragon bench.

Meanwhile, Cowley had four reserves score 14 or more points, led by Raishaun Brown's 17.

Tiger starter Mekhi Cameron tied Franklin's effort with 29 points. He made good on 5 of his 9 attempts from distance.

Cowley shot 59.1% overall on 66 total shots.
