MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — DeAndre Williams' 29 points helped Memphis defeat Wichita State 88-78 on Thursday night.

Williams added 15 rebounds and three steals for the Tigers (14-5, 4-2 American Athletic Conference). Kendric Davis scored 20 points while shooting 6 for 10 (4 for 5 from 3-point range) and 4 of 4 from the free throw line, and added five assists. Keonte Kennedy shot 6 for 10, including 4 for 6 from beyond the arc to finish with 16 points.

James Rojas led the Shockers (9-9, 2-4) in scoring, finishing with 19 points. Wichita State also got 15 points from Jaykwon Walton. Craig Porter Jr. also had 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Memphis took the lead with 4:18 to go in the first half and did not give it up. The score was 36-30 at halftime, with Davis racking up 11 points. Memphis used an 8-0 run in the second half to build a 13-point lead at 50-37 with 14:18 left.

Both teams next play Sunday. Memphis visits Cincinnati and Wichita State visits SMU.

DODGE CITY, Kan.-The Hutchinson Salthawks boy's basketball team gave up a 3 point basketball to Newton's Ezra Entz to trail the Railers early, but that lead didn't last long as the # 1 tourney seeded Salthawks rolled to a 53 to 25 win in the opening round game of the 80th Dodge City Tournament of Champions.

The Salthawks (9-0) started the 2nd quarter with their reserves getting most of the action after building a 33 to 14 halftime lead produced by a 18-2 run midway through the quarter.

Hutch was led by sophomore Terrell King with 10 points and senior forward Wade Meyer's 7 points. Sharp shooter Garrett Robertson scored 6 points. The Salthawk bench contributed 24 points in the win. Hutch shot 54.3% for the game while holding the Railer's to a 30.3% clip.

The Newton Railers (1-9) were led by Camden Carr who had 9 points off 3 for 9 shooting from outside the arch.

Hutchinson will now face the Junction City Blue Jays who pulled away from Shawnee Mission South in the 2nd half to win 50 to 35 after only having a 18 to 17 point lead at halftime.

Junction City is 8-3 on the season and has a strong front line that score 31 of the 50 Blue Jays points on Thursday afternoon.

The Hutch vs Junction City semifinal game will tip at 2:30 pm on Friday and can be heard on KWBW (1450am/98.5fm) as well as on-line streamed at kwbwradio.com.

 🏀 Hutch High Boys roll past Newton in opening round of TOC

The Blue Dragon men rebounded from Saturday's loss in a big way, getting a one 115 to 94 conference victory over Independence last night. Dragons improved to 13 and 6 overall 7 and 6 in Jayhawk conference play. The Dragons hit 17 three pointers. Aaron Franklin led the Dragons with 20.&nbsp; Aaron Potter matched a season high with 15. Jaden Garrison 15. KB Bundy had 12. Congrats to Tommy Dawson and the Hutchinson men. A big win in Independence last night. 

HutchCC women's basketball team extended their winning streak to five and get a convincing win over Independence last night as sophomore Mia Williams put together her second straight 28 point performance. And Hutchinson wins 82-58. They had a 29 point halftime lead. Dragons improved to 15 and 4. The ladies are 9 and 4 in Jayhawk conference play. Freshman Monet Duffy had her third straight double double with 14 points 11 boards. Freshman Jurnee Armstead had 14. 

Tonight on the TV screen. It'll be 9 and 8, Wichita State's at 13 and 5. Memphis tipoff, 6:00 on ESPNU. 

This afternoon, we have high school basketball here on BW Radio Sports as a lot of area teams will be in action today. Hutchinson will play and Dodge City as they are the 1 seed in the Dodge City Tournament of Champions. They'll play Newton at 2:00. Our pregame starts at 1:45 sharp here this afternoon. 

Chiefs wide receiver  Necole HERDMAN is the only member of the 53 man roster not practicing as the team begin working on its game plan for the Jaguars. Andy Reid said that defensive end Frank Clark is progressing well, as is wide receiver Sky Moore, who could be seen practicing. Should be good to go. Reid also confirmed that running back Clyde Edwards-helaire and tight end Jodie Fortson would also take the field this week, meaning the Chiefs have officially designated  them for return from injured reserve. The Chiefs will play host Jacksonville Saturday at 3:30. Our pre-game will start here at 2 pm on BW Radio Sports. 

Also  announced yesterday, Field at Arrowhead saying that rapper Lil Jon will be performing at halftime of the AFC divisional playoff game between the Jags and the Chiefs. Another  

Reno County coach's show tonight here at 6:00, Glen will chat with Haven boys basketball coach Lonnie Paramor and I'll chat with Haven Girls coach Dwight Roper. Both Haven teams are unbeaten at this point in the season.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks outscored West Virginia 57-24 in the second half to turn a 14-point halftime deficit into a 77-58 victory over the Mountaineers on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks, now 13-4 (3-3 Big 12) on the year, trailed 40-28 with 6:04 to play in the third quarter following a technical foul against the Kansas bench. KU scored the next 15 points to take its first lead of the game 43-40. The Jayhawks would extend the lead to 61-48 thanks to a 33-6 run and finished the game outscoring WVU 49-16 over the final 16 minutes.

"I think a coach appreciates when a team responds after a technical. It’s usually a way for the players to know that I have their back and when they come back and play that hard, I think it is reciprocated."

The 14-point margin is the sixth-largest halftime deficit overcome in school history and the largest since KU came from 17 points down to defeat Texas Tech, 68-66, on January 21, 2015.

Kansas had four players in double figures, led by Wyvette Mayberry and Zakiyah Franklin with 19 points apiece, while Holly Kersgieter had 16. Taiyanna Jackson recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds, while adding three blocked shots.

The first quarter was back and forth, with West Virginia leading 17-15 after one. The Jayhawks struggled to get going in the second quarter, turning the ball over nine times, and shooting only 18.2% from the floor while scoring a season-low five points in the quarter to go into the break trailing 34-20.

WVU’s margin remained 14 at 42-28 after the Mountaineers scored four points in a possession following a technical foul. The Jayhawks went on a 15-0 run to take the lead for the first time all night and shot 62.5% from the floor during the third quarter to lead 44-43 with 10 minutes to play.

Kersgieter started off the fourth quarter by hitting two threes within the first minute and a half to give the Jayhawks a three-point lead. This led to the Jayhawks starting the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run. Franklin dished out seven assists, which is a new season high, and Mayberry scored 13 points in the fourth quarter alone as KU pulled away for the 77-58 victory.

The win improves the Jayhawks record to 13-4 overall, and 3-3 in Big 12 play. Kansas is now 2-1 at home in Big 12 conference play and 9-1 overall at Allen Fieldhouse this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ask any coach or player around the NFL and they are bound to tell you that the speed of the game picks up when the playoffs arrive. There is no longer time to think on the field; decisions more often are made by in-the-moment instincts rather than carefully crafted game plans.

Perhaps that is why Patrick Mahomes thrives in the postseason.

Whether it be his preponderance of no-look passes, crazy side-arm slings or the myriad other ways that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback sparks creativity on the field, there is arguably no better player in the NFL when it comes to playing sandlot football. His ability to make something out of nothing leaves teammates and foes alike shaking their heads.

“My family or friends are like, ‘Oh my God, how’s Patrick Mahomes?’ And I’m like, ’He’s just a special individual,” said Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, whose career has been rejuvenated during his first season playing with him.

"It's just like playing ‘Madden’ back when you had Michael Vick, who can just run all over the field and then launch it 80 yards down the field," Smith-Schuster explained. “It's kind of like that but for more it's ILR — in real life.”

What has become known simply as Mahomes Magic around Kansas City tends to shine brightest this time of year, and the results are downright incredible: He has never failed to reach the AFC championship game in four years as a starter, twice going to the Super Bowl and once winning its MVP award while ending the franchise's 50-year title drought.

He will try to improve to 5-0 in the divisional round on Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I think all the guys understood that whenever they signed with this team that we want to win the Super Bowl. And if we don't, we feel like it's not where we should be,” Mahomes said. “But you can't look ahead. We have a great team that we're playing this week, that's playing great football, so how can we practice today so that we're better by the end of the week? And I think you have to have that mindset — and I think the guys do — and I think we're in a good spot.”

Rarely are the Chiefs, winners of the last seven AFC West titles, in a bad spot with Mahomes on the field. In all, he is 8-3 in the postseason. He is averaging 307 yards passing per game, a number driven up by a 404-yard effort in last year's wild-card win over the Steelers. And he has thrown 28 touchdown passes against seven interceptions while adding five TD runs, including one in last year's divisional-round win over the Bills.

That night at Arrowhead Stadium may have best encapsulated Mahomes in the playoffs.

The Chiefs trailed 29-26 with less than 2 minutes left when he threw since-departed Tyreek Hill a 64-yard touchdown pass to regain the lead. And when the Bills raced the other way and scored with 13 seconds to go, Mahomes answered with two long completions to Hill and Travis Kelce to set up Harrison Butker's tying field goal as time expired.

In overtime, Mahomes completed all six of his passes, with the last the winning TD toss to Kelce in a 42-36 victory.

“Pat's a very competitive person,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said, “and on top of that, obviously, he's a great football player. He's going to do whatever he can to make sure that he can help us be successful.”

That means tirelessly working on his craft, and the results are evident: Mahomes shattered his own franchise record with 5,250 yards passing this season, to go with a league-leading 41 touchdown passes and four touchdown runs.

“With me being there with him for his rookie year to where he's at now, it's so far advanced,” said quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy, who spent time as the head coach of the Bears before returning to Kansas City this season.

“Sometimes the hardest thing for some quarterbacks to do is to call a play. For him, that’s like second nature. It’s simple,” Nagy said. “It wasn’t like that as a rookie. Sometimes we take that for granted because we have some unique formations, motion shifts, plays, etc. Well, that’s just the beginning of the play. You’ve got to get up and do everything else at the line of scrimmage then, oh, by the way, you’ve got to make a play.”

Mahomes has been making them for years. And making them look easy.

The last time he stepped on the field in the playoffs, against the Bengals in last year's AFC championship, he produced perhaps the worst performance of his career. Mahomes still threw for 275 and three touchdowns, but he also threw a pair of interceptions, and they gave Cincinnati a chance to rally from a 21-3 deficit for a 27-24 overtime victory.

It's a loss that has fueled Mahomes through the offseason, the regular season and right into this year's postseason.

“You build up for this all season,” he said. “The regular season, you take it week by week, but you want to be here in the playoffs, and you know you're going to be playing the best football teams in the league, and that's what you want to do as a competitor. The Bolts improved from 9-8 in Staley’s first campaign in 2021 to 10-7 and the franchise’s first trip to the playoffs since 2018 this season. Both years though have ended in disappointing fashion in which decisions by Staley backfired. The Chargers blew a 27-point lead last Saturday against Jacksonville in the AFC wild-card round and lost 31-30.

UNDATED (AP) — Chris Ford, a member of the Boston Celtics 1981 championship team, a longtime NBA coach and the player credited with scoring the league’s first 3-point basket, has died at the age of 74. His family announced his death in a statement issued by the Celtics. No official cause was given, but the statement said Ford died Tuesday. The Press of Atlantic City reported he died in Philadelphia after suffering a heart attack earlier this month. Ford was voted the team’s MVP in his first season with Boston. He retired following the 1981-82 season and was an assistant coach for the Celtics for seven seasons from 1983 to 1990, helping coach former teammates Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish to two titles in 1984 and 1986.

The Dragons have hit at least 11 three-pointers in their last three contests, but converted on just 27.5% of their attempts just two games ago.

Four Dragons hit at least three triples: Aaron Franklin (4-8), Aaron Potter (3-5), Jayden Garrison (3-6) and Jackson Leyba (3-5).

Riding a four-game winning streak, the Hutchinson Community College women’s bas- ketball team opens the second half of conference play on Wednesday against Indepen- dence.

The Blue Dragons (14-4, 8-4 KJCCC) and the Pirates (9-9, 5-7) will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at the ICC Fieldhouse in Independence. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network and broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The Blue Dragons start the second time through the Jayhawk Conference season tied for fourth with Coffeyville. The Dragons are single game behind both Butler and Barton for second place and three games behind KJCCC leader Dodge City with 12 games remaining in the regular season.

The Blue Dragons enter play on Wednesday after a 71-53 road victory on Saturday at Garden City. Sophomore Mya Williams scored a season-high 28 points and freshman Monae Duffy posted her second-straight double-double with a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Blue Dragons used a late 17-5 run to pull away from the Bronc- busters.

Independence battled Butler down to the wire on Saturday at the ICC Fieldhouse, but lost 72-63. The Pirates had a four-points lead midway through the fourth quarter, but scored only five points in the final 6 minutes, 32 seconds of the game.

The Blue Dragons won the first meeting with the Pirates 61-53 on November 16 in

the Sports Arena. 🏀 WBB: Dragons start 2nd half of league at Indy 

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team looks to regroup after a Saturday loss at Garden City and tries to do so with a tough road battle on Wednesday at Independence.

The Blue Dragons (12-6, 6-6 KJCCC) and Pirates (6-12, 4-8 KJCCC) tip off the second half of the Jayhawk Conference season at 7:30 p.m. at the ICC Fieldhouse in Indepen- dence.

The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 7:15 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live

(1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. After last Saturday’s 117-97 loss at

second trip to the KJCCC tied for seventh

place with Seward County and Pratt at 6-6.

The Dragons are just one game out of four

place and are four games behind first-place Dodge City after the first half of the KJCCC season.

The Blue Dragons had a three-point lead over Garden City late in the first half, but the Busters scored the final nine points of the opening half and outscored the Blue Dragons 64-50 in the final 20 minutes.

Sophomore Jayden Garrison poured in a career-high 31 points, matching a career high with 7 of 11 3-pointers to pace the Dragons, who shot better than 50 percent for the second time this season.

The Blue Dragons defeated Independence 99-94 in the 2022-23 Jayhawk Conference opener on November 16 at the Sports Arena. Aaron Franklin scored a career-high 36 points in the first meeting with the Pirates. Franklin added 10 rebound and a career-best six steals. Kernan Bundy and Aaron Potter scored 13 points each and Garrison added 10 points. Johan Nziemi hit 13 of 15 total shot attempts to score a team-high 34 points to lead Independence.

The Pirates have lost 3 of 4, including an 84-81 home loss to Butler on Saturday. All three of those losses were by four points or less. Seven of Independence’s 12 losses this season have been by less than 10 points.

Josh Smith had 26 points and Kam Parker had 20 points to lead the Pirates in the Saturday loss to Butler.

With 205 3-point goals already this season, the 2022-23 Blue Dragons have already climbed to No. 9 on the Hutchinson team 3-point charts for a season. Last season, the&nbsp;Blue Dragons obliterated the team record with 321 3-point goal.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons look to rally with road trip to Indy

What a basketball game last night between Kansas and Kansas State. Johnson scored 24 points, including the go ahead alley-oop dunk with 25 seconds left in overtime. Number 13 K-State beats #2 ranked Kansas 83-82 to snap a seven game series skid. Desi Sills had 24. Nick Hogan and Tomlin 15 points ten boards and Kansas State now moves to 16 and 2. Jalen Wilson did everything in his power. He finishes with a career high, 38 points for KU that drops now to 16 and 2. K.J. Adams had 17. Grady Dick 16, though both those players ended up fouling out and not being able to help down the late stretch.  

Elsewhere in the Big 12, #12, Iowa State upset Number 7, Texas, 78-67, Iowa State. Really good. 21st ranked Baylor beat Texas Tech 81-74. 

Basketball  on the high school hardwoods last night game here on BW radio sports. Hutchinson high school girls suffered their first loss of the year. Just couldn't get it going. Derby, 57. Hutchinson 23. Southeast of Saline Girls down Sterling 58-21. 

A lot of boys tournaments going on throughout the state. Here are games from last night. Gossel beat Fairfield 63-48, Concordia over Halstead 72-46 Haven blows out Winfield 72-46. They remain unbeaten. 

Sterling over Trinity Catholic 68-51. Wichita Independent beat Nickerson 67 to 52. Hutch High boys are off until their next action Thursday against Newton as they'll be out in the Tournament of Champions in Dodge City playing Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 

The HutchCC men and women are on  the road to take on Independence tonight. The 14 and 4 women will play at 5:30 our pregame at 5:15 here on BW Radio. 

The women have won four in a row. The 12 and 6 men will get underway. Then after that game, right around 7:30. 

Fans who want  to see the Chiefs play the Buffalo Bills at a neutral site AFC Championship Game in Atlanta have the opportunity to buy tickets this week. And if I were announcing yesterday that season ticket members for both teams who previously opted in to purchase AFC Championship game tickets will have an exclusive pre-sale opportunity on Wednesday. 

Today, starting at 9 am, season ticket members will be provided unique pass codes to their season ticket accounts. 

Fans who aren't season ticket holders can register for a pre-sale by signing up for a passcode starting at 9 a.m. on Friday. 

Any remaining tickets following the pre-sale will go on sale to the public on Monday, January 23rd at 9 am through Ticketmaster. Should that neutral site game materialize.

The Chiefs, of course, will be in action coming up this weekend and then kick off would be set Sunday, January 29th at 530 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium if the bills and chiefs advance to next weekend.

In fact, the Chiefs are so healthy these days that even running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and tight end Jody Fortson, who had been on injured reserve, were back on the practice field. Neither is likely to play against Jacksonville, but their return opens up the possibility that they could contribute later in the playoffs should Kansas City advance.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Trevor Lawrence has a near-decade-long winning streak in Saturday games. Lawrence improved to 37-0 as a starting quarterback on that day when the Jacksonville Jaguars rallied from 27 points down to stun the Los Angeles Chargers 31-30 in an AFC wild-card game last weekend. Lawrence’s undefeated stretch spans high school, college and the past two Saturday nights in Jacksonville. He can make it 38 in a row when the Jaguars play at Kansas City in the divisional round Saturday.

ATLANTA (AP) — The NFL has directed the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills to begin selling tickets for a possible AFC championship game in Atlanta on Jan. 29. The game would be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium if both teams win at home in the divisional round this weekend. If either loses, the game would be hosted by the higher-seeded team. The top-seeded Chiefs are hosting Jacksonville, while the No. 2 seed Bills are facing Cincinnati. The NFL revised its playoff format after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field, leaving the Chiefs with one more game than the Bills.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Staley will be back for a third season as the Los Angeles Chargers head coach. The same can not be said for some of his offensive staff. The team on Tuesday announced that offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and quarterbacks coach Shane Day have been fired after two years. Criticism about Lombardi’s play-calling increased throughout the season. The Chargers were ranked ninth in total offense, but 20th in scrimmage yards per play along with the third-worst rushing attack in the league.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes he can still produce at an MVP level in the right situation if he opts to play next season. Rodgers discussed the uncertainty of his future plans Tuesday during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on SiriusXM and YouTube. The four-time MVP hasn’t decided whether to return to the Packers, retire or request a trade. Rodgers said he didn't know whether Green Bay would represent the ideal situation for him and expressed hope the Packers would keep several of their veteran free agents.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The NCAA hopes a federal appeals court will soon block a lawsuit that seeks to treat athletes as employees who are paid for their time. It is the latest test of amateurism in college sports. The Division I athletes who filed the suit being argued next month want hourly wages similar to those earned in work-study programs. They say the nation’s colleges are violating fair labor practices by failing to pay them for the time they put into their sports. Baylor University President Linda Livingston, chairperson of the NCAA's Board of Governors, says the idea would have a "potentially catastrophic impact on college sports.”

UNDATED (AP) — Police say Georgia football player Devin Willock wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle in a weekend crash that killed him and a recruiting staff member. Athens-Clarke County police list excessive speed on a road with a 40 mph limit as a primary cause of the crash early Sunday. The wreck occurred in Athens a few hours after a parade and ceremony honoring the team's second straight national championship. The 20-year-old Willock, an offensive lineman from New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy, died shortly after at a hospital.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Following back-to-back road games, the Kansas Jayhawks are back home at Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Jan. 18, to face West Virginia in a mid-week Big 12 matchup.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on Big 12 NOW, with Josh Klingler and Brenda VanLengen on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis and David Lawrence calling the action.

Kansas has played two ranked opponents in the past three games and fallen to 12-4 (2-3 Big 12) on the year following an 80-74 defeat at No. 19 Oklahoma on Saturday. KU opened Big 12 play 2-0 for only the fourth time since the formation of the conference, and first time since 2012-13.

Wyvette Mayberry matched her season-high with 20 points at Oklahoma, as she hit 7-of-14 field goal attempts and all five of her free throws. Mayberry has scored in double figures three times in conference play and ranks fourth on the team with 10.4 points per game.

Kansas also got double-figure scoring games at OU from Zakiyah Franklin and Ioanna Chatzileonti. Franklin had 15 points and surpassed 1,200 career points in the process. She’s now 22nd on KU’s all-time scoring list with 1,204 points as a Jayhawk. Chatzileonti had 10 points and eight rebounds, good for her fourth game in double figures this season.

Taiyanna Jackson finished two points shy of a double-double as she totaled eight points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots against the Sooners. Jackson is the only player in the Big 12 averaging a double-double as she leads KU with 15.1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. She’s also ranked third in the nation in blocked shots (48) and sixth in field goal percentage (64.2).

West Virginia is 12-4 (3-2 Big 12) this season under first-year head coach Dawn Plitzuweit. The Mountaineers feature the top scoring defense in the conference, holding opponents to 56.3 points per game on 37.2 percent shooting. WVU has won three straight games, defeating Kansas State, TCU and No. 18 Baylor after starting conference play 0-2.

Kansas and West Virginia have faced each other 22 times, with 20 coming since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 Conference a decade ago. WVU leads the all-time series 16-6, which includes a record of 8-3 in both Lawrence and Morgantown. Last season, Kansas swept the regular season series against WVU for the first time, winning 65-47 in Morgantown and 74-63 in Lawrence.
