HOUSTON (AP) — Jamal Shead scored a career-high 25 points, Marcus Sasser added 22 and No. 1 Houston defeated Wichita State 83-66 on Thursday night.

Shead shot 10 of 17 from the field. The junior was 4 of 8 on 3-pointers.

“My teammates told me to be aggressive,” Shead said. “They were just being confident in me, giving me confidence in myself. That really helped."

Sasser tied the school career record for most 3-pointers set by Robert McKiver with 261. He also scored at least 20 points for the sixth straight game, and chants of “Sasser” filled the Fertitta Center after it was over.

“Just all the love in Houston,” Sasser, who played his last home game on senior night. “They’ve been giving me love since I was a freshman, and they are still doing it to this day. I just can’t thank the Houston community enough.”

Jarace Walker had 13 points and nine rebounds for Houston (28-2, 16-1 American Athletic Conference). The Cougars shot 47%, including 9 of 25 on 3s, in winning their 10th straight game.

“The guys didn’t have the right mindset to start the game where Wichita State did,” Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said. “They came out here to play, our guys came out here for a memorial service. Fellas, we have a game. Once we got rolling in the second half, we were good.”

Houston forced 20 turnovers, which it converted into 17 points.

“They did a good job,” Wichita State coach Isaac Brown said of the Cougars. “They ambushed the low post. They pressure you hard. They did a good job of turning us over. Twenty turnovers are way too many.”

Craig Porter Jr. had 17 points and seven rebounds, Jaron Pierre Jr. added 16 points and Kenny Pohto had 12 for Wichita State (15-14, 8-9).

The Shockers lost despite shooting 65% (24 of 37) from the field. They were worse at the foul line, making only 12 of 21 (57%).

Leading 37-35, Houston extended it to a 12-point lead on a dunk by Roberts, capping a 13-3 run with 13½ minutes left.

Wichita State countered with an 8-0 burst to close within four on two free throws by James Rojas with 11 minutes left, but got no closer.

The Shockers scored 10 straight points to open a 22-14 lead midway through the first half. Houston led 33-31 at the break.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Former Iowa State basketball player Caleb Grill said he has been battling mental illness and regrets what led to his dismissal.

Coach T.J. Otzelberger announced Wednesday that Grill had failed to meet program expectations and was no longer on the team. Grill was the Cyclones’ third-leading scorer and started 22 of 25 games this season.

As part of&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/caleb_grill0/status/1631075860315815937?s=20" target="_blank">a social media post</a>&nbsp;in which he thanked Otzelberger for the opportunity to play for the Cyclones, Grill said he had been battling mental illness.

“Lastly, one day when I am brave enough, I hope to be able to share my story about my mental health and my mental illness I have been battling through all season,” Grill wrote. “While everyone was commenting about the hair, or funny actions on the court, it was a way for me to get out of that state of mind and feel like me being myself instead of the dark place I have been in this season.

“If it was not for the love and support from family network back home ... I am not sure I would be alive and I would have made a decision that would have affected so many people’s lives.”

Otzelberger’s statement did not elaborate on the reason for Grill’s removal from the team, and Grill’s message on Twitter indirectly referenced it. He was called for a technical foul in the second half of the Cyclones’ 72-69 loss to West Virginia on Monday.

“Unfortunately, I said something that I regret which has cost me the opportunity to finish out my dream at Iowa State,” he wrote. “I hope that all the players and Iowa State fans can find it in their hearts to forgive me.”

Grill, who is from Maize, Kansas, played at Iowa State as a freshman and transferred to UNLV the following season when Otzelberger was head coach there. Grill moved back to Ames last year when Otzelberger got the head coaching job with the Cyclones.

He averaged 6.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists over 116 career games at UNLV and Iowa State.

TAMPA, Fla. –&nbsp;The Kansas softball team fell to host South Florida 4-2 at USF Softball Stadium Thursday night in the opener of the Bulls Invitational.

The Jayhawks now hold a 10-6 record, while USF improved to 7-9.

The Bulls got going early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second, USF singled through the right side, scoring a pair. They finished the inning with four hits.

Both teams would be held scoreless until the fourth. Senior third baseman Ashlyn Anderson led off the fourth for Kansas, hitting a solo home run to left, putting the Jayhawks on the board. However, USF responded in the bottom half, scoring two runs thanks to a sac-fly and a double, increasing its lead to 4-1.

In the fifth, catcher Lyric Moore hit a line drive that got away from the right fielder, and she was waved around third and scored an inside the park home run, making the score 4-2 in favor of USF.

Despite a stand up double off the wall from sophomore first baseman Olivia Bruno, the Jayhawks were unable to rally in the seventh.

Both Moore and Anderson finished with two hits apiece, each hitting their fourth home run of the season.

Junior starting pitcher Kasey Hamilton ended the night with four strikeouts, allowing nine hits and walking one batter. She fell to 3-2 on the year.

The Jayhawks will play a doubleheader Saturday, as they face off against Army (10:30 a.m. CT) and USC-Upstate (1 p.m. CT) on day two of the Bulls Invitational.

Wilson is one of 15 student-athletes named to the late season list. &nbsp; Members of the association's board of directors chose the players that will be considered as contenders for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the USBWA’s National Player of the Year. Wilson is one of 15 student-athletes named to the late season list. &nbsp; Members of the association's board of directors chose the players that will be considered as contenders for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the USBWA’s National Player of the Year. Wilson is aiming to become the second Jayhawk to win the Oscar Robertson Trophy, joining 2017 recipient Frank Mason III. &nbsp; Wilson leads the Big 12 in scoring at 19.6 points per game, which is 29th nationally, and includes two 30-point performances and 16 games of 20 or more points scored. The Denton, Texas, forward also leads the Big 12 in rebounds per game at 8.3 rpg and in double-doubles with nine. &nbsp; On most every national player of the year watch list, Wilson ranks tied for 31st&nbsp;on the Kansas career scoring list, currently at 1,341 points, and his 754 career rebounds are 16th&nbsp;on the KU list. SURPRISE, Ariz. — Royals Hall of Famer&nbsp;Mike Sweeney&nbsp;and 2015 World Series champion&nbsp;Jeremy Guthrie&nbsp;will join the Royals’ broadcast team, the club announced today.

Sweeney and Guthrie will appear on Bally Sports Kansas City on select pregame and postgame shows, and as guests in the booth. Sweeney and Guthrie will also call games on Royals Radio. Both will begin calling games during Spring Training.

“Like all Royals fans, I have great memories of Mike’s Royals Hall of Fame career and Jeremy’s contributions to our World Series championship in 2015,” Chairman and CEO&nbsp;John Sherman&nbsp;said. “And like all Royals fans, I’m excited to have them contribute to an already beloved broadcast team.

“We were happy to add Jake earlier this offseason, and are so appreciative of the ways Denny, Ryan, Hud, Monty, Joel and Stew already connect with our fans. I’m thrilled with how they’ve already embraced Mike and Jeremy, working together to tell the story of our team.”

The additions of Sweeney and Guthrie provide fresh voices and different perspectives for fans, as well as depth, creating a more dynamic broadcast.

Sweeney spent 13 of his 16 Major League seasons in Kansas City (1995-2007) and was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame in 2015. He is one of five Royals to be selected to five All-Star Games or more, was Royals Player of the Year three times, and ranks among the club’ all-time leaders in many offensive categories. He has broadcasting experience with MLB Network and Fox Sports and will remain part of the Royals front office as Special Assistant to Baseball Operations/Leadership Department.

“Two things that I enjoy doing are growing and giving,” Sweeney said. “I’m excited about growing as a member of the Kansas City Royals, and I’m excited about giving back to fans and sharing my passion for the game and my love for the players as a member of the incredible broadcast team that I’m blessed to join.”

Guthrie pitched 13 seasons in the Major Leagues, including 2012-15 with the Royals. He led the 2013 Royals with 15 wins, and pitched more than 200 innings in both 2013 and 2014. He was the winning pitcher in Game 3 of the 2014 World Series, and started Game 7 of that series against the Giants. His broadcasting experience includes MLB Network and other local and national outlets.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State guard Caleb Grill, who started all but three games and was the Cyclones' third-leading scorer, has been dismissed from the team, coach T.J. Otzelberger announced Wednesday.

"We hold our players to high standards and there are expectations that our student-athletes are held accountable for," Otzelberger said in a statement.

The fourth-year player from Maize, Kansas, averaged 9.5 points, four rebounds and 1.4 assists. He started 22 straight games before coming off the bench in a Feb. 15 game against TCU. Otzelberger said at the time Grill needed to rest his sore back.

Grill didn't appear in road games at Kansas State and Texas and came off the bench in the last two games against Oklahoma and West Virginia.

Grill played at Iowa State as a freshman and transferred to UNLV the following season when Otzelberger was head coach there. Grill moved back to Ames last year when Otzelberger got the head coaching job with the Cyclones.

Franklin led the way with a career-high 31, but the Jayhawks got contributions from a variety of players as KU scored a season-high 98 points. Wyvette Mayberry had 22 points and six assists, while Taiyanna Jackson finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Zsofia Telegdy also set a new career-high with 10 points in 13 minutes of action off the bench. "It was a lot of fun. There’s a big difference between beating yourself and being really hard to beat, and I think we have been really hard to beat these past two games," Kansas Coach Brandon Schneider. "There’s ups and downs where your chemistry, on or off the court, can take a dip. I hope that we’ve shown that we have recovered from that and we’re excited for the team we have going into March. I don’t care what the date is, but we need our March team to show up." The Jayhawks started strong in the first quarter, scoring the first five points of the game, which included a layup by Franklin and a three-point basket by Chandler Prater. Iowa State was able to add points of their own, but a pair of short scoring runs helped KU keep the advantage throughout the first quarter. KU again build the lead back to 17 on a basket by Franklin that made it 85-68 with 5:39 to play, but the Jayhawks would have to hold off a late rally by the Cyclones, who got as close as two in the final 20 seconds of the game. Franklin, Prater and Holly Kersgieter combined to hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 18 seconds to help the Jayhawks put the game away.

Kansas shot 52% from the field, hitting 34-of-66 field goals and 11-of-20 three-pointers (55%). The Jayhawks had an advantage of 44-to-38 on points in the paint and the Kansas bench outscored the Cyclone bench 18-to-11.&nbsp;

Hutchinson extended a KJCCC win streak by winning its fourth straight with an 80-60 win over Garden City Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

Hutch is now 19-11 overall and 13-11 in league play and earned a home court game at 2 p.m. on Saturday versus Northwest Kansas Tech. Admission to that game will be free of charge to the public with the doors opening at 1 p.m. Fans can enter through the east or west entrance to the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons led at the half by 12, then pulled away in the second half to win by 20. Ra'Sean Frederick and Dadrevius Weathers led the way for Hutchinson with 17 points each. Aaron Franklin was the other Blue Dragon in double figures with 13. 

Garden City was paced by&nbsp;Buru Naivalurua with 21 points.

The Broncbusters finished as the No. 5 seed and will host Independence on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The semi-finals and finals will be played at the Garvey Gymnasium on the Friends University campus Friday, March 10, and Saturday, March 11. The winner will get an automatic invitation to the NJCAA D1 Men's Basketball Tournament, which will begin at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson on March 20.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Damion Baugh scored a career-high 24 points, Emanuel Mille had 20 and No. 22 TCU held on to beat Texas 75-73. The loss denies the ninth-ranked Longhorns a chance to play for a share of the Big 12 title in their upcoming regular-season finale. Baugh scored on a breakaway layup off the opening tip and TCU never trailed. It was the second loss in a row and third in five games for the 22-8 Longhorns who haven’t won a conference title since 2008. They play league champion third-ranked Kansas in their regular-season finale Saturday. Sir'Jabari Rice had 16 points for Texas.

Kansas State missed 3 of 4 foul shots in the final six seconds with two-point lead at the end of regulation squandering the chance to win it. The Wildcats were 18 of 30 overall from the line. At the top of his to-do list is getting a handle on name, image and likeness compensation for college athletes. Eight of them will not have cuts and will have fields of no more than 80 players. Commissioner Jay Monahan informed the players of the changes in a memo. Those changes include the Player Impact Program bonus being cut from $100 million for 20 players to $50 million for 10 players. The rest of the money is redirected into performance bonus pools. It also includes room for players on the outside to play their way into the elite events.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Every time the Garden City Broncbusters would make a run, Hutchinson had an answer as the 23-7 (12-7 KJCCC) Blue Dragons defeated Garden City 72-65 at the Sports Arena on Wednesday night.

Hutchinson has already locked up the No. 4 seed and a bye for the upcoming Region VI Tournament but wanted to keep momentum heading into next week. The Blue Dragons did just that by winning their fourth league game in a row.

Hutch had to overcome a hot shooting Dayshawna Carter to get the win. Carter had 25 points for Garden City to lead all scorers. Carter had some help as Ariyah Brooks added 19 points for the Broncbusters as well.

The Blue Dragons were led by Morgan Browning's 19 points. Mya Williams added 12, Journey Armstead 11 and Kali Howard 10. Monae Duffy and Natalie Payne scored eight and Leata Te Nana-Williams came off the bench to score four.

Hutchinson will have a bye on Saturday, but will play in the Region VI quarterfinals beginning Tuesday, March 7, versus the Coffeyville Pratt winner of the No. 5 and No. 7 matchup.

🏀 WBB: Hutchinson outlasts Garden City with late run

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutchinson Salthawk Boys Basketball team advanced to their sub-state championship game with a solid 53-37 victory over Salina Central&nbsp; at the Salthawk Activity Center (SAC) Wednesday night.

Hutchinson used a solid first half from senior Wade Meyer to build a 31-17 lead at the half. Hutch extended the lead by holding the Mustangs to just 3 field goals in the third quarter, then pulled away for the win to advance to the Saturday night championship game at 6 p.m.

Wade Meyer led the Hawks with 18 points followed up by Terrell King's 10 points. Dauntay King added six points, Julian Smith five, Garrett Robertson five, Bradyn Rodriquez four, Jay Lewis three, and Daylee VanSyckle two.

Ethan Waters led Salina Central with 19 points while Mason Nemecheck added six points.

Hutchinson (20-1) will host Topeka West (14-7) at the SAC on Saturday night at 6 p.m. for the sub-state championship. The winner on Saturday will advance to 5A state at Emporia next week.

🏀Salthawk Boys roll past Salina Central

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Keyontae Johnson and Markquis Nowell have been the savvy seniors leading Kansas State's basketball renaissance all season, a nearly inseparable duo helping to put the No. 11 Wildcats in position to make a deep March run.

Desi Sills shined every bit as bright as them Wednesday night.

The often-overlooked Arkansas State transfer flirted with a triple-double in his own Bramlage Coliseum farwell, joining Johnson and Nowell in leading the Wildcats to an 85-69 victory over Oklahoma. Sills finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists before riling up the student section with a fiery postgame speech.

“I wanted to leave a legacy. Leave it all on the floor,” Sills said afterward. “I was shy of a triple-double but that doesn't matter. I'm just glad we got the win.”

Johnson finished with 16 points and Nowell added 11 points and 10 assists, helping the Wildcats (23-7, 11-6 Big 12) end a three-game skid against the Sooners. Nae'Qwan Tomlin also scored 19 points for Kansas State, which led by as many as 20 early in the second half before holding on down the stretch.

Then the party started: Jerome Tang sent his entire team pouring into the student section, where they danced the “Wabash Cannonball,” while the first-year coach headed to the pep band and joined right in.

“I was just so thankful and grateful that I decided to finish my career here at k-state,” Nowell said. “I've been on both sides of the deal, the losing side and now the winning side, so I'm just thankful for it all.”

The Sooners (14-16, 4-13) applied a little pressure late, getting within 75-65 with just under 2 minutes to go. But that's when Tanner Groves was ejected for hitting Sills with an errant elbow, and his free throws put the game away.

“It definitely wasn't intentional,” Oklahoma coach Porter Moser said. “It was an unfortunate play. I don't think it was malicious. I know the kid; that's not who he is. It was a high-elbow play. An unfortunate play.”

Milos Uzan had 20 points to lead the Sooners. Otega Oweh finished with 18.

Oklahoma spent most of the first half mired in foul trouble. Groves and Oweh took a seat with two apiece 5 minutes into the game, and Kansas State spent the last 15 minutes parading to the line in the bonus.

Yet it wasn't until the closing stretch that the Wildcats established some breathing room.

The game was tied 25-all when Tomlin began a 9-0 run to carry Kansas State into the locker room. David N'Guessan added a bucket a couple of minutes later, Johnson drilled a 3-pointer off a nifty behind-the-back pass from Sills, and N'Guessan added a punctuating dunk off Nowell's feed for a 34-25 advantage.

“The wheels fell off,” Moser said. "Not that you can't overcome a 9-0 run to end the half, but we were up and up, and back and forth. Next thing we know we're down nine.”

It wasn't long until they were down much more than that.

After a bucket by Groves to start the second half, the Wildcats ripped off seven straight points — dunks by Tomlin bookending Nowell's 3-pointer. And after Nowell hit another 3 from well beyond the arc, he saved a steal as he fell out of bounds, starting a fastbreak that ended with Sills' reverse layup for a 48-31 lead with 16 minutes to go.

The lead stretched to 53-33 before the Oklahoma began to mount its failed comeback bid.

We all bought in," Sill said. “We all committed on the defensive end, we got easy transition buckets. I thought that was the key to the game. We took off from there.”

Oklahoma is the only Big 12 team that must win next week's conference tournament to earn an NCAA tourney berth, though three others are teetering on the brink. But the Sooners proved in wins over the Wildcats, Iowa State and No. 2 Alabama that they are capable, and they showed glimpses of it again Wednesday night.

Kansas State remains in the mix for a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, which would match the 2010 team for its best since seeding began in 1979. But the Wildcats likely have to beat West Virginia on Saturday and win a couple of Big 12 tourney games to make that happen.

The regular season wraps Saturday when Oklahoma plays No. 22 TCU and Kansas State visits West Virginia.

NORMAN, Okla. —&nbsp;K-State rallied from a 22-point second-quarter deficit to hold a four-point lead at the end of regulation, but (16/13) Oklahoma rallied to capture a 90-86 win in overtime at the Lloyd Noble Center on Wednesday night.

K-State (16-14, 5-12 Big 12) put four in double figures led by a career-high 33-points by sophomore guard Serena Sundell. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Week was 11-of-17 from the field, dished out four assists and pocketed three steals.

Sophomore Jaelyn Glenn carded 21 points, seven rebounds, tied her career-high with six steals and dished three assists.

Senior Gabby Gregory notched 16 points, six rebounds and three assists in her return to Norman. Freshman Eliza Maupin carded a career-high 14 points and chipped in with five rebounds, a steal and a block.

Oklahoma (23-5, 13-4) placed five in double figures and led by the bench effort of Skylar Vann with 23 points.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — In their final game at Allen Fieldhouse, Jalen Wilson and fellow Kansas senior Kevin McCullar Jr. not only kept the hardscrabble Jayhawks in front of Texas Tech most of the night but made the play that sealed the win.

Wilson had 21 points to lead all scorers, McCullar added 14 points with a critical basket in the final minute, and the third-ranked Jayhawks held off the Red Raiders 67-63 on Tuesday to clinch at least a share of their NCAA-leading 64th regular-season conference championship.

“It felt so good to win,” Wilson said. “I just wanted to cherish the moment.”

Dajuan Harris had 16 points for the Jayhawks (25-5, 13-4), who would capture the outright title if No. 9 Texas loses to No. 22 TCU on Wednesday night. Otherwise, the Jayhawks would need to beat the Longhorns on Saturday.

Kansas was left clinging to a 61-60 lead after the Red Raiders' De'Vion Harmon could only make the second of two free throws with 56.4 seconds left. But after the Jayhawks raced up the floor, and Wilson failed to get an open look, a loose ball ended up in the hands of McCullar, who merely had to lay it in for a three-point lead.

“It was a loose ball. I seen Harmon reach for it and I was like, ‘I need to get this ball and get this bucket,’” said McCullar, who transferred from Texas Tech. “Nobody was around so I just stuck it in. That play was huge.”

“If anybody was going to make that play, it was Kevin,” Wilson added. "That's just the type of guy he is."

Texas Tech still had time left and called a timeout to set up a play. But Pop Isaacs threw a driving layup off the side of the backboard, and Harris scored in transition for the Jayhawks to put the game out of reach.

“We had to decide for the 3 or try to score and get something quick and went with that,” Red Raiders coach Mark Adams said of the game's crucial possession. “Didn't get the call.”

The Jayhawks improved to 22-1 against Texas Tech (16-14, 5-12) in the Phog with their seventh consecutive win overall, and they have not lost on senior night since the 1983-84 season.

“They made some big plays down the stretch, especially the last couple of minutes. That's what Kansas does,” Adams said. “With their homecourt advantage, they know how to win late in games.”

Harmon had 15 points to lead Texas Tech, which was just 3 of 16 from the 3-point line. Kevin Obanor added 14 points, Fardaws Aimaq had 13 points and 18 rebounds, and Isaacs finished with 11 points.

Wearing retro red uniforms for their senior sendoff, the Jayhawks got off to a frigid start against the defensive-minded Red Raiders. McCullar eventually dropped a couple of 3s minutes apart to give Kansas some breathing room, and Wilson began driving for contested layups, helping the Jayhawks forge a 30-21 lead by the break.

Texas Tech was 1 of 11 from beyond the arc and committed seven turnovers over the first 20 scattershot minutes.

The Red Raiders' cold streak ended there. They scored five quick points to start the second half, nearly wiping out their deficit in their first few trips down floor, and Obanor began to get easy buckets in the paint.
