NFL owners approved a resolution Friday that implemented new rules for this postseason in response to the cancellation of the Bills-Bengals game after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field Monday night.

But they fell short against the Lions, who had been eliminated from the playoffs earlier Sunday. The Eagles clinched the NFC East. They also earn home field throughout the playoffs. Hurts was 20-of-35 passing and threw one interception. The Giants play at Minnesota next Sunday.

HOUSTON (AP) — Lovie Smith has been fired as coach of the Houston Texans on Sunday night after just one season where the team went 3-13-1. It’s the second straight season in which the Texans have fired a coach after just one year. They parted ways with David Culley last January after he went 4-13 in his only season.

He and several teammates then kicked it on the ground. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks says he has non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Hendriks announced Sunday on Instagram that he was diagnosed in recent days. The three-time All-Star was scheduled to begin treatment on Monday. Hendriks says he is “confident” he will “make a full recovery and be back on the mound as soon as possible.” The five-year survival rate for non-Hodgkin lymphoma is 73.8%, according to the National Cancer Institute. Some forms are aggressive while others are slow growing. General manager Rick Hahn says in a statement the White Sox don’t expect to have an update on Hendriks’ status prior to opening day.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — Jon Rahm pulled off a stunner to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions after trailing by seven shots. Equally shocking was the collapse by Collin Morikawa that made it all possible. Rahm ran off three birdies and an eagle in a four-hole stretch and shot 63. Morikawa went 67 holes without a bogey to start the tournament at Kapalua. He then made three in a row. Morikawa tied a PGA Tour record for losing the largest 54-hole lead. He led by six going into the final round. Rahm has won three of his last five starts worldwide.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Patrick Mahomes set the NFL record for total yards in a season, and the Kansas City Chiefs rolled to a 31-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders to lock up the AFC's No. 1 seed. Mahomes passed for 202 yards and rushed for 29 against the Raiders, giving him 5,608 total yards for the season. That surpassed the record of 5,562 yards set by Drew Brees in 2011 with the New Orleans Saints. The Chiefs will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Shiffrin led from start to finish to win a giant slalom and can now break Vonn's mark in a night slalom scheduled for Flachau, Austria, on Tuesday. Already with eight wins this season, Shiffrin is also quickly approaching Ingemar Stenmark's overall record between men and women of 86 victories. Hamlin, still critical, continues recovery, tweets thanks

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Doctors describe Damar Hamlin's neurological function as "excellent," and the Buffalo Bills safety is still making progress in his recovery. He was resuscitated on the field in a game at Cincinnati on Monday. The Bills' daily update also says Hamlin continues to breathe on his own but remains in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. There was a tweet on the 24-year-old's verified Twitter account Saturday evening thanking all who have "reached out and prayed" and saying the response to his injury will make him stronger. Hamlin took a major step forward in his recovery Friday when he was taken off a ventilator and showed an ability to speak.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Based solely on the recruiting rankings, this national championship game between No. 1 Georgia and No. 3 TCU is the most lopsided in the nine-year history of the College Football Playoff. The defending national champion Bulldogs face the upstart Horned Frogs on Monday night at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The rosters are built differently in recruiting, but both teams pride themselves in player development. Georgia has 15 players who were five-star recruits on its roster and 53 who were four stars. TCU has one five-star and 16 four-stars.

Morikawa pulls away with late run of birdies at Kapalua

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — The back nine at Kapalua is where the Sentry Tournament of Champions comes to life. That's where Collin Morikawa might have ended it on Saturday. Morikawa ran off four birdies over his last five holes for a 65. That gives him a six-shot lead going into the final round at Kapalua. No one has lost a final-round lead that large since the tournament moved to Maui in 1999. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and J.J. Spaun were six shots behind. It looks hopeless. Morikawa is smooth with putter and always great with the irons.

Davis beats Garcia by TKO, retains WBA lightweight title

WASHINGTON (AP) — Gervonta Davis has retained his WBA lightweight title by beating Hector Luis Garcia by TKO. Davis won after the match was stopped following eight rounds because of injury to Garcia. The Baltimore native improved to 28-0 with 26 knockouts. The match was stopped for more than a minute in the eighth round when there was an altercation in the stands ringside. Davis is next scheduled to face Ryan Garcia in a highly anticipated showdown in April. This was the first big boxing event at what's now known as Capital One Arena in Washington since Mike Tyson's final fight in 2005.

Team USA beats Italy to win inaugural United Cup

SYDNEY (AP) — The United States has claimed the inaugural United Cup in convincing fashion with an overpowering display over Italy in the final of the mixed teams event. No. 9-ranked Taylor Fritz gave the U.S. an unassailable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five matchup when edging former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7). The Indian Wells Masters champion failed to convert nine break points but faced none on his own serve and proved the steadier player in the two tiebreakers. He was mobbed by his teammates at Ken Rosewall Arena after clinching the title for the Americans.

LAS VEGAS — Patrick Mahomes set the NFL record for total yards in a season, and the Kansas City Chiefs rolled to a 31-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday to lock up the AFC's No. 1 seed.

Mahomes passed for 202 yards and rushed for 29 against the Raiders, giving him 5,608 total yards this season. That surpassed the record of 5,562 yards set by Drew Brees in 2011 with the New Orleans Saints.

More than setting the mark, Mahomes helped ensure the top seed for the Chiefs (14-3) and a bye in the first round of the playoffs, which begin next weekend. Kansas City, however, is not assured of home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Because Monday night's Buffalo-Cincinnati game was canceled, the Chiefs could wind up playing the Bills or Bengals in the AFC championship on a neutral field. The Buffalo-Cincinnati game initially was postponed after Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest. Hamlin remains in critical condition, but is improving.

The Chiefs matched their franchise record for regular-season victories, set in 2020, and they set a team mark with their 17th consecutive game of at least 300 yards of offense.

The Raiders (6-11) ended their first season under coach Josh McDaniels with three consecutive losses and four defeats in five games. They made the playoffs a year ago, but now face serious questions at quarterback, offensive line and throughout the defense.

Jarrett Stidham started his second game in a row in place of the sidelined Derek Carr, and this performance didn't go nearly as well as the first one. Stidham completed 22 of 36 passes for 219 yards with a touchdown and interception. He was sacked six times.

A week ago, he threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-34 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, who was dealing with hip and oblique injuries as well as a reported family emergency, was a game-day decision but played. He rushed for 45 yards and could possibly win the NFL rushing title with 1,653 yards.

But Jacobs fell short of the franchise rushing record of 1,759 yards set by Marcus Allen in 1985. This was potentially Jacobs' final game as a member of the Raiders because his fifth-year option was not picked up. His performance this season has given Las Vegas officials plenty to consider.

Both teams wore black shirts in warmups honoring Hamlin that read "LOVE FOR DAMAR" with his No. 3 in the middle. Mahomes also wore a hoodie that had a drawing of the player with "HAMLIN STRONG" below it. ... Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton made 16 tackles, giving him 180 for the season and breaking the team record of 179 set by Derrick Johnson in 2011. … Kansas City running back Jerick McKinnon has caught a touchdown pass in six consecutive games. WACO, Texas (AP) — New Kansas State coach Jerome Tang had a tough time enjoying another big victory for the Wildcats. This one came against one of his closest friends and former team.

Markquis Nowell had the first 30-point, 10-assist game in school history, his 14th assist coming on Ismael Massoud's go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds left in overtime in the Wildcats' 97-95 victory Saturday at No. 19 Baylor, where Tang was on coach Scott Drew's staff the past 19 seasons.

“This wasn't fun before, and wasn't fun after,” said Tang, who added that he even cried afterward and had a hard time celebrating the victory with his own team.

His only real enjoyment came during the game, when Nowell had 32 points and Keyontae Johnson added 24 as the Wildcats (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) matched their best overall start since 1958-59.

“We’re not trying to prove doubters. We’re trying to just continue to believe in ourselves,” Tang said. “Had we lost this game, it wouldn’t change that we’ve made great strides as a team. And because we won, it doesn’t mean that we don’t have room for improvement.”

K-State is 3-0 in the Big 12 for the first time in 10 seasons, all against ranked teams. That includes a single-game scoring record in a 116-103 win at sixth-ranked Texas last Tuesday night.

Baylor (10-5, 0-3) called timeout after Massoud's 3. But Adam Flagler, who had 23 points, was surrounded by three defenders when he lost the ball out of bounds with 6.1 seconds left.

Nowell then made the first of his two free throws after being fouled. Flagler grabbed the rebound and the Bears had one more shot, but Caleb Lohner’s 3 was off the mark.

"If we’re going to lose, losing to Coach Tang is someone I would want to lose to,” Drew said. “He’s done a remarkable job in a short period of time, and I love him like a brother.”

The Bears hadn't lost their first three Big 12 games since 2003-04, Drew's first season. They blew a 17-point lead in their Big 12 home opener on Wednesday, losing when TCU hit a go-ahead shot with 4 seconds left.

Keyonte George had 22 points for Baylor, and Flo Thamba had 14.

Tang was welcomed back to Waco with a pregame video of highlights from his time with the Bears, and he got a nice ovation before being presented with his Big 12 regular-season championship ring from last season. He was part of 397 wins that included the 2021 national title.

It was the first time Drew had faced one of his former assistants. Tang was with him since the start of his tenure with the Bears.

“Coach Tang tried to make sure it wasn’t about him and it was about us,” Nowell said. “He knew what it was going to be like coming back, but he just focused on the game plan and how to win, and that’s how the team handled it."

It was only the second 30-point, 10-assist game in the Big 12 in the past 10 years — Trae Young had one for Oklahoma in 2017. Nowell’s 14 assists tied the Kansas State for a conference game, matching Tim Jankovich’s mark against Kansas on March 7, 1981. ... Nowell also has the first back-to-back 30-point games for the Wildcats since Michael Beasley's four in a row at the end of the 2007-08 regular season.

When the new AP Top 25 comes out Monday, Kansas State should be ranked for the first time since being 18th in the final poll of the 2018-19 season. Baylor could be unranked for the first time since that same season. The Bears were 16th in 2019-20 preseason poll, starting their current stretch of being in 65 consecutive polls, including 11 as the No. 1 team.

Kansas State hosts Oklahoma State on Tuesday night.

Baylor plays three of its next four games on the road, first at West Virginia on Wednesday night.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — No. 3 Kansas came out of the gate solidly for once in a Big 12 game.

Freshman Gradey Dick scored 16 points, Jalen Wilson had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and the Jayhawks rode a hot start to a 76-62 victory over West Virginia on Saturday night.

Kansas (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) has won eight straight. Against the Mountaineers, the Jayhawks avoided both the stagnant beginnings and the nail-biting finishes of their first two conference games.

“I think just coming out with energy," said Dick, who has scored in double figures in a dozen games so far. "What we've been talking about in the locker room before games is, when we kind of come out in those sluggish games, we end up playing catchup ball. That's what we want to try to work on.”

Kansas entered the game making 38% of its 3-pointers but took advantage of open spots in the West Virginia defense early. The Jayhawks made six consecutive 3-pointers to jump ahead 22-10. Dajuan Harris hit his first two from long range, giving him nine straight over three games before both he and the Jayhawks cooled off.

The Kansas lead never got below five points after that.

“We’ve started games when we’ve shot it well. I don’t know that we’ve shot it 6 for 6 from 3 well,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. ”And it was all different guys."

KJ Adams added 14 points, Kevin McCullar finished with 12 and Harris 11 for the Jayhawks.

Tre Mitchell scored 15 points, Erik Stevenson added 12 and Emmitt Matthews had 11 for West Virginia (10-5, 0-3 Big 12), which has lost three straight since making a brief appearance in the AP Top 25 at No. 24 a week ago.

Stevenson, West Virginia’s leading scorer, kept his temper in check Saturday after fouling out of the previous two games and being called for technical fouls in each. But Stevenson missed 12 of his first 13 shots.

West Virginia started the second half missing 13 of its first 15 shots and couldn’t find any rhythm down the stretch.

“We seemingly miss more 2-footers than any team in American history," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “It's hard to make a shot from 2 feet or 4 feet or 8 feet if you're not looking at where you're shooting it.”

Dick hit a 3-pointer, fed Zach Clemence for a layup on the Jayhawks' next possession, then made three free throws after being fouled on a long shot as Kansas extended a seven-point halftime lead to 62-43 with 9:38 remaining.

“Did he miss a shot?” Huggins said of Dick, who sank four 3-pointers and was 4 of 7 from the floor. “Didn't seem like he did.”

Two seconds before halftime, Wilson was attempting a shot when a shot-clock malfunction caused the buzzer to sound, followed immediately by the inadvertent firing of the musket by the Mountaineer mascot. Play resumed with Adams making a pair of free throws to end the half. The mascot quickly reloaded the musket and fired again when halftime actually arrived.

“I didn't know you could reload a musket that fast,” Self said.

After a 2-0 week, Kansas figures to move up at least one spot following top-ranked Purdue’s loss to Rutgers.

Kansas: The Jayhawks have beaten the Mountaineers in nine of their last 10 meetings. They outlasted Oklahoma State and Texas Tech to open the Big 12 season after getting off to slow starts in both games. This time, they asserted their dominance early.

West Virginia: The Mountaineers cut down on turnovers committed compared with their first two Big 12 games, but have been held to their lowest point totals of the season in back-to-back games. West Virginia has lost 10 straight to ranked opponents and has four more such games later this month.

West Virginia hosts No. 19 Baylor on Wednesday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Dragons (12-5, 6-5) fell into a little slump to close 2023.

Hutchinson lost four straight and 5 of 6 before closing the first half of the season with two victories.

After beating Northwest Tech in Goodland Wednesday and Seward in the Sports Arena Saturday, the Dragons are now 2-0 to begin 2023.

Aaron Franklin continued to do Aaron Franklin things as he dropped 25 points and pulled down 18 boards against the Saints (9-8, 5-6). According to Blue Dragon Sports Information, his 18 rebounds are the seventh-most in a game in program history.

🏀 MBB: Dragons stay perfect in '23

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It was not easy, but the Dragons remained perfect at home and in the new year Saturday night despite a tough matchup with Seward.

Neither team is currently ranked. According to Blue Dragon Sports Information, Saturday's contest marked just the second time since 2006 neither program had a Top 25 designation in the meeting.

Hutchinson (13-4, 7-4) has only lost on the road this season, but got a mighty test from Seward (9-8, 7-4).

The Saints led by six with just 1:40 off the clock. Hutchinson battled back to tie the game at 15 to end the first quarter.

The Dragons struggled from distance and went 0-7 from three to begin the game.

A Mya Williams three with 20 seconds left in the first quarter evened the score.

Hutchinson took a slim 39-38 lead into the locker room after surrendering 20 points in 20 minutes of play to Seward's D'Arrah Allen.

Allen knocked down treys on four consecutive trips to pull Seward within two after trailing by as many as nine in the second quarter.

Allen finished the half 8 0f 14 shooting from the floor and 4 of 4 from three-point land. The Saints shot a blistering 54.5% (6-11) from beyond the arc in the first half.

Meanwhile, Hutchinson hit just 4 of 14 threes (28.6%).

Allen struggled with fouls in the second half, but Seward got help from De'Shawnti Thomas while Allen was on the bench. Thomas scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half.

Despite Allen's third-quarter absence, the Saints took a one-point advantage headed into the final frame.

Five Dragons scored in double figures to ensure Hutchinson stayed a perfect 9-0 at home on the season.

Williams scored 14 of her total 20 points in the second half. Monae Duffy and Kali Howard each notched double-doubles.

Duffy finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She fouled out of the contest with 2:37 remaining.

Howard had 14 monster rebounds and 10 points.

Journey Armstead scored 15 points off the bench and dished four assists. Morgan Browning shot just 4 of 12, but added 11 points.

Allen battled foul trouble and injury in the second half, she added just seven points to her total in the final 20 minutes.

The score changed 15 times in the contest and was tied 11 times.

The Dragons led the game eight seconds fewer (18:29 total minutes to 18:37) than Seward, but managed to outscore the Saints by seven in the final 10 minutes and have the lead when the buzzer sounded.

Hutchinson finished 6 of 27 from three-point range (22.2%) and made only 30 of 44 free throws (68.2%).

Seward made 13 of 19 (68.4%) free throws.

Tied for sixth place in the Jayhawk Conference standings, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team and the Seward County Saints meet for the first time this season on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Blue Dragons' first home game since December 12. The game will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 7:15 p.m. and broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (after the completion of the Kansas City Chiefs game). Airtime is 7:15 p.m.

The Blue Dragons (11-5, 5-5 KJCCC) continue to recover from their late-November swoon with a third-straight victory on Wednesday.

Buoyed by the career-high 28-point effort from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/bundy_kernan_viy9">Kernan Bundy</a>, the Blue Dragons outlasted a much-improved Northwest Tech team in an 90-87 victory on Wednesday in Goodland.

Bundy hit five first-half 3-pointers to help the Blue Dragons to a 48-41 halftime lead. Bundy and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/frederick_ra-sean_ozi1">Ra'Sean Frederick</a>&nbsp;hit critical free throws in the final minute of the second half to secure the victory.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;added 22 points, his 12th game of 20 or more points this season. The Dragons hit 12 3-pointers in the game, the ninth time to reach 10 or more treys in a game this season.

The victory also moved Blue Dragon head coach Tommy DeSalme into fifth place on the Jayhawk Conference and eighth place on the Region VI career coaching wins' lists. The victory over the Mavericks broke a fifth-place tie with DeSalme and former Butler and Cowley head coach Randy Smithson. DeSalme now has 321 conference coaching victories.

Saturday's game with be the fifth played by Seward County (9-7, 5-5 KJCCC) since returning from the holiday break. The Saints went 1-2 in three games played in the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tempe, Arizona. Seward County then returned to conference play on Wednesday at home with a 71-64 victory over Barton. Mario Whitley scored a team-high 20 points and the Saints held Barton to 32.4 percent shooting and only three 3-pointers in the victory at the Greenhouse.

The Blue Dragons have won the last six games played against Seward County, sweeping the season series last season. The Dragons won 81-66 on January 8, 2022 in Liberal and completed the sweep with a 73-59 win over the Saints on Feb. 16, 2022 at the Sports Arena.

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team had a successful return from the holiday break with a decisive victory on Wednesday at Northwest Tech.

Now the Blue Dragons square off against rival Seward County on Saturday in the first home game for Hutchinson since December 12. Tipoff at the Hutchinson Sports Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network and will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) beginning at 5:15 p.m.

One of the top rivalries in the Jayhawk Conference renews itself, but does so with a rare occurrence. For only the second time since the 2006-07 season, neither the Blue Dragons nor the Saints are ranked in the NJCAA Top 25. The only other time that has happened was the first meeting last season when the Blue Dragons were receiving votes and the Saints were unranked.

The Blue Dragons improved to 12-4 overall and 6-4 in the KJCCC on Wednesday when Hutchinson made the long trip to Northwest Tech and defeated the Mavericks 81-52.

The Dragons just missed shooting 50 percent for the game (49.2) and had balanced scoring with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>scoring 16 points each and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/armstead_journey_v4yx">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;adding 15 points. The Blue Dragons had another stellar defensive effort, holding the Mavericks to 35 percent shooting and forcing 21 turnovers.

Also on Wednesday, Williams joined both the Blue Dragon career Top 10 for points scored (908) and 3-pointers (121). She is currently 10th in both career categories.

Seward County is a very un-Saints-like 9-7 so far this season, but are in third place in the KJCCC with a 7-3 league record. Seward County dropped a 60-57 decision to second-place Barton on Wednesday in Liberal. Kylee Hunt led the Saints with 17 points.

The Saints have played a rugged non-conference schedule, dropping games against Odessa and New Mexico on opening weekend. The Saints also lost to No. 6 Trinity Valley, but defeated defending national champion Tyler at Tyler on New Year's Day.

This matchup between Hutchinson and Seward County will be the 100th in a series history that dates back to 1977. The Saints hold a 50-49 series lead.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutchinson High School boy's and girl's basketball teams both earned big wins at the Salthawk Activity Center Friday night by sweeping Maize South in both games.

Hutch High jumped out to a comfortable 33-12 lead at halftime, but had to hang on as the Maize South Lady Mavericks came back strong to pull within 6 at the finish.&nbsp; Hutch High (6-0) edged Maize South (3-3) 56 to 50 for the final.

The Salthawks put three players in double figures being led by super sophemore Aliyah Green's 17 points.&nbsp; Senior guards Grace Posch and Josie McLean added 15 and 17 points respecively. Maize South was led by U of Nebraska-Kearney commit Avery Lowe with 21.&nbsp; Sophie Hurley scored 8 off the bench and Ava Howie added 8 points as well before fouling out at the 1:51 mark of the fourth quarter.

In the battle of #1 Maize South vs #4 ranked Hutchinson, it took a super effort to rally from trailing 43-41 going into the fourth quarter for Hutch High to outscore the Mavericks 23-12 in the final period to win 64-55. Hutchinson senior Wade Meyer picked the right time to get hot as he scored 12 of his 15 point total in the fourth quarter including going 4 for 4 from the foul stripe.

Hutchinson trailed by as many as nine points in the 2nd half, but found a way to pull within 2 going into the final quarter then came out red hot to put the Mavericks away going down the stretch.&nbsp;

Hutchinson was led in scoring by Garrett Robertson who had 22, followed by Meyer's 15 points and Dauntay King chipped in 12 points including four clutch free throws late in the contest.&nbsp; Nic Lange also came up big with 9 points to his credit.&nbsp; Maize South's combo guard Michael Kates led the Mavericks with 15 points and Isaiah Atwater had 9 as well as Tory Homan's 9 points and Jeron Askren's 9 to lead Maize South.

These two teams could meet again at the TOC in Dodge City coming up in a couple weeks as both could come in as the #1 and #2 seeds possibly in that Tourney.&nbsp; That bracket should be announced this next week.

The Salthawks will travel to Maize to take on the Eagles next Tuesday in Maize.
